Mastery Suggestion: All Events Visible

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serelisk.6573

Serelisk.6573

I don’t know if this has been suggested before and I know I can’t be the onyl one to think this but I think the pact commander mastery tree should progress such that players can see all active events in real time on their world map for the zone they are in. It can be called ‘advanced scouting’ or something.

The reasoning is two-fold: You’re the commander of the pact, with access to the order of whispers, vigil and priory, three militant entities which rely on knowledge to varying degrees. If the commander of the pact doesn’t know there’s a giant centaur invasion in a field a few hundred yards away from them then there’s a problem.

The second reason is that Heart Tasks are supposed to organically draw players to where events are happening, right? Well, Pact Commanders, using their mentor/commander tags, can aid in doing so. If I’m in a zone for the 50th bazillionth time, I usually prefer to do the events since they’re generally repeatable and much more robust + cooperative than the standard heart tasks.

From an experienced player convenience AND new player experience perspective this just makes sense.

This whole thread is ridiculous just buy the expansion, clearly you enjoy the game so support it and gain access to a bunch of new content at the same time it’s a win win, don’t complain that your not getting for free what a majority of us paid for

ArenaNet doesn’t deserve money for an expansion from a customer if they didn’t make content that person wants. Since they don’t want guild halls, they’ll have to accept that. That’s not what the complaint is about.

They took content from the already existing guild features and locked them away behind purchase of the new expansion. They’re forcing users hands and that’s not a very friendly business practice at all .

Remove achievement points from Keg Brawl

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It’s crazy that they moved Keg Brawl to 1 day a week and I still struggle to find decent matches a lot of the time. It’s just people boosting for achievement points. I do not believe the AP reward is heavily responsible for bringing many people to the game, and if it does they’re usually the ones to play dirty or selfishly with no regard to skill or teamwork.

Please and thank you.

“Actually I thought the reason was pretty good. It sat there empty for ages on end, and you couldn’t get a game going for most of the day, until it went on a rotation. I know because I used to try.

When it went on the rotation there were actually games played. I’d call that a pretty good reason."
@Vayne

This is your post which has the quintessential argument I was responding to. Furthermore, the post is about bringing back Keg Brawl. As I’ve only talked about the activity rotation as it pertains to bringing back Keg Brawl, I fail to see how either the post is off topic, or how I was the one who hijacked the thread.

Return of keg brawl?

Serelisk.6573

More to the point, if the metrics showed that Keg Brawl was so amazingly popular, then why is it the game that’s only once a week? Do you have an answer for that?

Logically, the game they put once a week is the least popular game. It makes sense.

Those that like it don’t want to admit that the other games are more popular, but I can’t think of any other reason Anet would have made Keg Brawl the odd man out.

My opinion doesn’t matter. Your opinion doesn’t matter. The opinion of the people who don’t play it, which would be most of the player base, probably does matter.

So you can supply a reason why Anet made Keg Brawl the only minigame that’s only once a week?

So, the issue with basing all of your judgments about things on metrics is that it doesn’t address why things happen or why numbers look the way they do. I’m sure you’ve been told this and should probably be an important element of maintaining a business.

So, the question in this thread was never “Is Keg Brawl unpopular?”. It was “Why is Keg Brawl unpopular?” and my suggestion is that it has far more to do with the poor exposure and advertisement of the game, than it ever had to do with how often the activity was accessible.

Meaning, I believe that making it only available 1 day a week had such small positive impact that it is thoroughly outweighed by the myriad of negative things that the update brought. Where as any large positive impact from the update were the result of Daily Activity achievement and the Activity NPC being placed in the center of Lion’s Arch. Again; both of those things could have been done without making keg brawl unplayable.

@Vayne

Based on my own anecdotal experience (Of which I have legions more to draw on than you do), I’m going to say your post is an exaggeration and caution anyone from taking that as a fact. There’s no way you’ve had so few Keg Brawl games that removing it entirely is a reasonable solution. I just can’t fathom. It sounds like you’re saying that you’ve never or only rarely got into a functioning Keg Brawl match, and there’s no way that’s the case.

[PUNT] had at least 1 person playing actively in almost every timezone from OCX to Euro (including myself during breaks from school or when work schedule allowed it), with the main one being NA and I’ve never heard testimony that remotely resembles yours. Sure, are there dead periods? Yes. Could you never find a game ever? Probably not.

And the ideal that the higher degree of advertisement would not help to further alleviate those issues is a pretty bold one.

I don’t know if I understand your overall point. My argument is that they could have did everything they did in the activity rotation update (namely move the NPC to where he is now, in Lion’s Arch) but keep all the activities open 7 days a week where the Activity Daily would be for a specific activity. So Keg Brawl will have increased population on Sunday instead of only available on Sunday. You know, the exact same way they’ve been incentivizing content since Guild Wars 1

Kegmaster

Return of keg brawl?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serelisk.6573

I’m not saying your anecdotes are not true. My reasoning is that the increase in activity had nothing to do with Keg Brawl being only available one day a week, and everything to do with the increased advertisement of,

1.) making it available from the center of Lion’s Arch, which gives it 1,000x more visibility for the player base at large and,

2.) Making Daily Achievements for Activities so people many people were encouraged to just visit that same NPC each day

Think about it. Why is it that Keg Brawl was the only permanent activity before the update, but yet you apparently had to wait an hour for games. Why would that change now that people have other games to play?

The primary appeal of a casual game type whose largest asset is the enjoyability of playing the game itself, is being able to play that game and have fun when you want.

The dream would be highlighting certain activities each day without removing the others entirely, so when I meet all those new players from Keg Brawl’s increased exposure and find people who enjoy playing, I don’t have to wait a week before I play with those people again.

I played almost every day for a year. Spent that time actively going out of my way to try and make games more fun for everyone. Passing to newer or less skilled players, or playing with self imposed handicaps so that every game felt competitive and everyone was involved if I could help it. The only time [PUNT] ever team-stacks is to counter and deny aggressive lobbing (#2-skill on keg makes games less fun for everyone but 1 person).

And I genuinely do not think that Keg Brawl was this supposed graveyard you make it out to be. Possibly on less populated timezones, for sure. But I can almost guarantee the reason that changed was because of the higher degree of advertisement which came with the same update, not because it’s only available on a single day.

The issue is that they spent money on breaking it further. At this point I just want it playable year round. I’ve lost all illusions that any substantial fix to Keg Brawl is ever going to happen but no way could I have foreseen they would basically remove it. If no one’s playing it, that means I can find the ones who do enjoy it, and schedule events and we can get our own arena going. Right now it’s in no better shape than it was prior to the update.

Return of keg brawl?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serelisk.6573

@Vayne

Bottom line is that I I fundamentally do not believe that Keg Brawl only being available on Saturday night/Sunday has had any positive impact on the state of the game.

The changes that have made KB attractive to anyone after the Activity Rotation update was either the introduction of the Daily Activity achievement, or the fact that it was much better advertised being in the center of the most populated capital city in the game. Both of these things could have happened without moving it to one day a week.

However, the very negative thing that happened was 8 people out of that 40 man active roster I mentioned not only quit playing Keg Brawl, they quit Guild Wars 2 entirely almost immediately after the update. The rest became largely inactive, and the overwhelming majority of them did not continue to play, even on the day it was up.

Return of keg brawl?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serelisk.6573

Basically, it wasn’t removed, but the access to it got severely restricted for no good reason.

For a good reason, actually, as Vayne said. If there’s only one activity available per day, then all the people who want to do activities are doing that activity, rather than being spread out over several of them. Granted, not many people do activities anyway… it worked a lot better when Daily Activity was a daily every day. But at least you can join in and actually have a game start, most of the time.

There’s no way I’m gonna let this argument continue to fly.

I like Keg Brawl, but I can’t play it on Monday through Saturday… Why would I suddenly have an urge to play Sanctum Sprint when I like Keg Brawl? Those two game modes are fundamentally different. The only values they share is that they’re labelled activities and you compete against others in an instance. Everything from the structure of the game type, to the type of mechanical skill and strategy to perform each one is very different, so the assumption that because someone doesn’t have access to one, they’ll play the other is poor reasoning at best.

Furthermore, I can guarantee I’ve played more Keg Brawl than 99.999% of this game’s player base (sitting somewhere between 500-1k hours inside of that instance) so the assertion that the arena was constantly devoid of players is anecdotal experience and not a total representation of the game itself. I definitely didn’t spend 500 hours playing KB alone.

This is not to say that there were not times when Keg Brawl was, in fact empty, but there’s plenty of other reasons besides population dilution that could be responsible for this. Absolute tons of people have done world completion and, prior to the update that put an NPC in the center of Lion’s Arch, many didn’t even know the mini game existed. Furthermore, this was in a time period when no other activities were playable besides Keg Brawl. So, applying the reasoning in this thread, more people should have been playing it, right? On top of this, at pretty much the exact same frequency, I still encounter times on both Saturday and Sunday when I’m in a game alone for up to 10 minutes, so I’m wondering if it even solved the problem?

There’s so many other avenues they could have took besides straight up removing KB for 6/7ths of the year. Way back in 2012, I created a Keg Brawl guild specifically meant for having a roster of people who can call on in case you want a full match (Brawl Capital [PUNT]). If you genuinely wanted to find more people to play with, it couldn’t have been too hard to find one of these players or make/join your own. At peak it totaled roughly ~40 members actively playing GW2 out of a ~70 man roster. And after the guild server merges, the guild had 60k Influence (and people only repped if they were playing KB).

Finally, it actually stands against one of the primary ethics of the games development, which is to encourage people to play content, not forcing them to. This is the primary design philosophy that guides Ascended Gear, Gift of Mastery, daily achievements, exclusive rewards to zones like Dry Top and Silverwastes, as well as high end rewards for living story content in general. Is the previous content removed or made obsolete by any of these additions? No. However, to put everyone in one place and avoid population dilution, they encourage going to these areas through one means or another. So how hard was it exactly to just make a daily activity reward for a specific activity and leave the others up?

Having said that, it’s not exactly the end of the world.

While I agree with the statement, it’s still an absolutely horrid augment to the game. This is evidenced by the near-universal panning of the patch since it went live.

However, the part to be up-in-arms about is the speculation behind the change, which was only exacerbated by the official response from the community manager and the team lead in charge of the change in question.

I believe many people in this thread came to a relatively similar conclusion that this was a purely business motivated decision. The fact that ArenaNet would lie to our faces about it (and in a none too endearing tone) is even worse.

Not to throw Gaile under a bus because I know she likely had no direct involvement in any of the changes. And sitting inside the heat of an angry player base is probably not her favorite part of the last 24 hours, but there’s no way even she believed those words when she typed them.

The one thing I always liked about the GW community is that you don’t often see people in a social area engaged in heated arguments about real life stuff like racism, politics, religion, what Russia is doing, etc. In some other MMOs (ESD in STO for example) it’s all you see people doing.

I never understood how people can sit in a game and troll people by starting arguments about touchy subjects and continue the debate for hours…

Shing Jea Monastery & Great Temple of Balthazar, among others, were notorious for this behavior, and ArenaNet even indirectly referenced them and towns like them in earlier gamescom demos for GW2.

If A.Net has 350 employees , that is not a lot, considering Blizzard is at 7500 and others are just as big. That is not a very big company for such a big game. I am not saying that they may not be working on an expansion but that is up to the parent company.

wut…

Activision Blizzard is @ 4,700 Employees as recently as 2012, the overwhelming majority of those are customer support related. They have 750 Employees across three games at least.

Source

350-400 is a fairly large for a single game/MMO developer, especially 2 years after the game has already launched.

Yes, both of these topics have been mentioned many times before, but I’ll give my two cents:

Capes: I would love to be able to have capes in this game, though I don’t think ArenaNet is going to make them. The primary excuse I’ve heard is that capes would cause too many clipping issues, either with other gear or with charr tails, etc. While that may be true, it’s not like this has stopped any other games…

Heck, it hasn’t stopped Anet in THIS game. A cape would clip with weapons and armor near identically to almost every backpack added to this game since release, and Season 1 of the living story was chock full of them.

Broken Intentions: It's been 6 months

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serelisk.6573

Serelisk.6573

On the topic of iteration and without a source, I’m going to claim that ArenaNet initially implied that these iterations were done to meet common ideals about how the game should play. It would meet the pillars of game play that the philosophy was built on, which makes sense logically because of gameplay continuity and to help your audience better understand the direction of your game. For example, one of the main things they didn’t want you to be able to do was grief other players, so a lot of dynamic events involving stealth were removed from the game or drawing board before launch because they didn’t fit that ideal.

Except that’s not how they use iteration. Now it sounds like an excuse to leave us completely blind development and/or direction wise, but still generate hype regardless. Why else would you even make a statement if it’s more than likely going to be BS and you note that with a disclaimer? People have a good reason to be frustrated by that behavior.

They created a relatively alt friendly sequel of an extremely alt friendly game then go back on features that were already planned for launch (account bound dyes) to make the game that much less alt friendly, add Fractals, Ascended Gear and World XP in an alt unfriendly manner then later change these things over a year after the game or the content came out to be alt friendly again? That doesn’t sound like a company that’s focused on ideals in development, they sound confused.

Right now the development claims that were posted to let us know what’s going to happen to this game are complete vaporware, but 6 months into the next year there’s still people clinging onto some inevitability that it will still happen. It’s an abuse of the hope people have that things will get better. Not everyone who doesn’t like the way GW2 plays right now is a hater. Many of them actually care and it really really sucks when they’re completely blindsided by features they vehemently oppose. (See: November 2012)

Some people may accept that this game should and will always be developed as if it’s still in beta, but I’ll never think that’s okay 2 years after it’s already officially released.

Keg Brawl’s now only available one day a week again I think. Because Arenanet made Sanctum Sprint a 24/7 activity during the festival of the four winds, Keg Brawl got to fill its two spots in the rotation.

It was fun being able to play Keg Brawl multiple times per week again, even if it was only 3 days instead of one. In that time I made a couple new friends and met some pretty good players who hadn’t played before the update.

Some of them wanted to join my (now retired) Keg Brawl guild but were disappointed when I explained that it’s only available this frequently for the last month only.

I hope someday we can get to play Keg Brawl free of the activity rotation. Until that day, see you maybe on Sundays. :/

It’s a great idea but currently against one of the most bizarre ideologies in the game, in my opinion. The ideal of “play the way you want”, as vague as that is, has streamlined the entire cosmetic portion of the games economy to rely principally on acquisition of gold. This is why there was not, until very recently, unique items rewarded to people strictly for doing a singular game type since Fractals of the Mist were added.

I always thought people shouldn’t feel entitled to every skin in the game, and that players who excel at something in particular (other than mindless farming in PvE) should be rewarded with unique items. That was once an idea pre-launch, but I guess people complained or something? Anyway, here’s hoping to Anet adding more unique rewards/prestige for people who enjoy specific game types.

P.S. I would love cosmetic items for Keg Brawl please & thank you.

why the new pavillion does not work

in Festival of the Four Winds

Posted by: Serelisk.6573

Serelisk.6573

The new Crown Pavillion is working exactly as it’s supposed to. Those who’re willing to put in the extra effort to coordinate with their guild, server community, or game community at large can set up a farm for themselves where they can reap 8 champ bags and 50 festival tokens every ~20 minutes or so.

Which is bad for the game. This is not that game. There are other games that are about hardcore raiding kind of activities, this IS NOT THAT GAME. This is a FUN game, it’s one where you should be able to log in, enjoy yourself, and be rewarded, not one where the encounter becomes an hour long slog with NO rewards at the end of it because the server you happened to log into didn’t have six commanders and a bunch of well informed and organized players on it. I’ve spent about three hours running Boss Blitz, participated in about 9-12 boss kills personally, spent about 20-25 silver on WPing after death, and only ever seen about 4-5 tokens and 1-2 tickets in return for my efforts, NEVER a completion reward. It is probably the least satisfying time I’ve ever spent playing this game, and it absolutely ruined a night in which I did a lot of other very fun things that would otherwise have made it a great night of GW2.

Joining these communities is actually easier then most think. GW2Community for example. Just google it.

I Do Not Want to join a community. I could join a guild, I have no interest in doing so. I want my community to be whomever is on when I log in, I just want that to WORK, and that is on ANet to provide. I do not want content that requires coordination, the event itself should enforce whatever coordination it requires, not just fail you if you don’t provide that coordination yourself.

You do not have to join these communities, you just have to coordinate with them. All this requires is the barest amoutn of communication between you and others on the map.

You’re making this out to be like a hardcore raid when it’s not, you just need to be willing to work together with other people. With more effort than it takes to just stand next to them.

I’m in TC and we have some killer coordination going. Almost every time I see people planning out their next runs and calling for assists when a boss isn’t going down fast enough, but we always – ALWAYS – drop down to Bronze tier rewards! No matter what kind of strategy or commander skill or whatever, we cannot get gold or even silver to save our lives. This leads to people just straight up not participating and altogether killing the Boss Blitz activity. I have no idea how people are getting this done on other servers or with other groups, but it is abysmal over in TC.

That’s not to say the gauntlets aren’t enjoyable. I haven’t delved too deeply into it last year but I’m enjoying it now so I’m happy there.

I’m also satisfied with everything else. Zephyr Sanctum gives the same great experience, playing around with jumping and flying around at ease but with numerous and fun variations in the system. Master Sky Crystals are a step up from normal sky crystal hunting and the two activities (albeit pretty lackluster for two repeating events) make people go places they never expected they could.

So yeah, loving this update to the max, but the Boss Blitz is horrendous right now. If there’s something we’re critically missing, tell me so I (along with the rest of the people I play with) can begin to enjoy the Blitz again.

Your problem is probably DPS and lack of understand of the mechanics of the different bosses. You only want about 10 people per boss to start out with but I don’t recommend going beyond 15 and certainly not 20. It will upscale the boss and potentially result in loss of net percentage DPS as well as taking resources from other boss fights.

For example, you need to keep the centaur in combat. He has a tendency to break aggro when he flees, and he might reset which can turn an easy gold into a silver or even a bronze.

Similarly with Boom-Boom, once the healing turret goes up, that’s instant priority number 1. Also make sure that he is poisoned the entire time.

The destroyer boss Pyroxis’s attacks can be reflected. Ask any guardians, mesmers, thieves or eles to bring skills that either reflect or destroy projectiles. Namely: WoR, Swirling Wind, Feedback, Smokescreen.

The pirate is AoE heavy and he hits hard. He also increases the frequency of his attacks drastically as his health gets lowered to critical levels. If you can help it, you want competent players with the ability to dodge and stay out of blinding fields. Also, having warriors with war banner ready helps too I’d imagine.

Flame legion shaman dude is straightforward, stay out of the fire and watch for his teleport/jump from platform to platform. Cause it hurts if he lands on you.

The ogre is really easy, as long as someone is distracting the birds with birdseed, he’s very straightforward.

Lastly, If DPS is the problem, I surmised that each boss @ ~15 players was balanced around level 80’s with very average DPS ability. A few decent zerker players in each group who can avoid going down constantly can certainly carry the damage for each group (ASSUMING you do not let too many people fight each boss as the upscaling is what will lead to your bronze reward)

Pavilion Events Bosses No Chest at end

No, I don’t believe they should bring back the chest per kill zerg style the event was last year. I prefer that ArenaNet encourage teamwork and coordination among players in the open world to receive rewards rather than letting everyone 1-1-1-1-1 down bosses and being gifted the highest calibers of reward this game can produce, on a regular basis.

I think the only issue with the Crown Pavillion is the frustration of dealing with megaservers. But once you get solid communication flowing in your respective maps, you can get a solid 3 or more (conceivably indefinite) hours of gold-reward-chest farming (8 champ bags, ~50 festival tokens every ~20 minutes).

The game needs to be challenging enough to require people to start paying attention, communicating, getting organized, and playing beyond just spamming 1. That’s a terrible culture to develop in a game, and I’d like to see it do a 180 from that.

Plus one.

The new Crown Pavillion is working exactly as it’s supposed to. Those who’re willing to put in the extra effort to coordinate with their guild, server community, or game community at large can set up a farm for themselves where they can reap 8 champ bags and 50 festival tokens every ~20 minutes or so.

It’s not hundreds, it’s closer to 60-70. And it’s not hard. It actually requires a very basic level of communication. No specialized builds needed (though having a couple people who know how to use reflect helps a lot).

The problem is that people would rather complain on forums about how their loot was nerfed than cooperating with the people around them to claim their EASY 8 champ bags every 15-20 minutes or so.

What happened ? I just don’t find any real reason to play

GW2 has cookie cutter daily requirements.
GW2 has cookie cutter content(zerg x mob for loot) Stack x dungeon for stack n smack.
GW2 has cookie cutter loot…..don’t get me started……….

I would take a sub system if it meant more dungeons, more zones, more classes, more …game.
After 2 years of blatant stagnation people have a right to ask “what happened”.

I’m not arguing against “what happened” to GW2. Indeed I wish more substantial things were added to the game. I just don’t believe a subscription necessarily facilitates a better gaming experience. Quite the contrary. GW2 doesn’t have weekly caps on things like dungeon tokens, or rested exp.

What you’re talking about is time gates, and GW2 has plenty of those, lol

Weekly commendation in guild missions cap
Daily Ascended Crafting cap
Monthly/Daily Laurel cap
Daily, Account-wide Dungeon Token cap
etc.

First you say there hasn’t been any new content, then when someone specifically points out that there has been, then it becomes, ‘well, there hasn’t been enough’, and then when someone lists all the added content, then it becomes, ‘well, there hasn’t been enough permanent content’.

So what is it? You start out with a certain argument, then you change it a couple times when other posters point out the fallacies of your argument.

There were no fallacies in his argument. You’re currently arguing semantics. The overall intent of the OP has not changed.

Even the provider of the list agreed that there is not a very substantial amount of content to play right now after 2 years.

Guilds and World Selection

The root problem here is that ArenaNet intends to but has not yet unified guild chapters. The only determining factor of your home server should just be World versus World, but currently you can not receive guild upgrades or contribute influence if you’re not on the same server.

At some point they will fix that but it hasn’t happened yet.

The average human would be incredibly fit, athletic, and acrobatic Olympians…
