Will Anet ever make Non-DPS role important?

Shanaeri Rynale.6897

I think people are getting a little hung up on the trinity thing imho. Damage, Support and control will always exist in any game(yes even COD) so in that respect the trinity will always be with us.

In GW2 there is, just as there was in GW1 the chance for any player to play one or more these core roles. GW1 did it with secondary professions, and GW2 tries to do it with every class getting a heal etc etc.

Where GW2 falls short IMHO is that, in the design there is little productive opportunity for a pve player to play support or control so people spec towards damage. This lack of requirement effectively cuts the abilities of a class by 2/3rds.

Which is why we see so little build variety also imho

Players will use the tools that are given to them, and the tools they find fun or usually most productive/efficient and developers should take that into account when designing encounters. The fact we are so DPS centric, and have a lack of build diversity is not down to the players, but to the designers who’s encounter design funnels the players down this route.

As I mentioned before, I very much doubt anything will happen to resolve this as the changes required to fix it are too expansive

Will Anet ever make Non-DPS role important?

Shanaeri Rynale.6897

Could you explain how skipping leads to DPS centric play? How damage helps with skipping?

In GW2 the trash mobs are just that, trash. They don’t offer any variation in the required tactics or builds within the dungeon. In other MMO’s I’ve played trash mobs are a real threat and often require specialist tactics to kill.

Now, since the mobs don’t offer (reward, build or challenge) anything different people skip them and so by skipping them, it only adds to the DPS centric nature of PvE as there is nothing in the encounter to dilute the DPS centric nature

It’s like putting milk in coffee, you can put milk in or not(skip trash of not) but it’s still coffee.

Think that makes sense and I did say it was off the top of my head

Shanaeri Rynale.6897

As mentioned above, Anet would need to totally redesign PvE in order to move people away from DPS centric play. As a quick off the top of my head list, these are the things Anet would need to review and rework,
o Dodge Mechanic – (if you can evade the attack it removes the need for support/healing)
o Condition capping – until condi damage matches direct or we get more mobs like the husks at wurm condition damage wont be as useful
o Dungeon Design – Encourages skip and stack gameplay which leads to DPS centric
play
o Event mechanics. Needs to discourage zerging, change the reward mechanics to award support and denial within the zerg

As you can see, it’s not an easy or short term fix. If they deem it broken at all.
Boss Mechanics.

Do I keep items in personal bank?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Shanaeri Rynale.6897

Putting stuff In your personal bank is fine. If you make your own guild for the purposes of using it as a separate store then there are a few gotchas to be aware of.
1. You cant store account/soul bound items in there
2. Anet will not restore the content of a guild bank

Obviously if you delete anything from your personal or guild bank it’s gone.

Failure to reward on guild missions....

in Guild Missions

Posted by: Shanaeri Rynale.6897

Shanaeri Rynale.6897

Either there are two bugs that cause the non reward of merit or the ‘guild leader has to stay until the end’ isn’t the cause.

I’ve noticed there are some puzzles that seem to bug more than others. For example Angvar’s Trove nearly always bugs, while langmars rarely does

Angvar’s Trove seems to bug more if you are not the guild starting It off, portal stuck players in or you do not stay in range of the event timer (I.e go to the far end of the cave)

If you started the puzzle off(doesn’t need to be a guild leader) and leave the puzzle before it ends(e.g to portal a stuck player in) it seems to bug more than if you don’t.

Sometimes with Angvar’s if you run the puzzle again, wait until the very end you can accept the reward and get the merits. Sometimes not though.

Saying that, guild missions are full of inconsistencies. Some challenges wont let just anyone start them, others will. Guild rushes will let anyone start them, even though the permissions in the roster don’t let them.

Basically, I know these have been reported many times(I do it every time, and giving lots of detail and screenies it happens) but it seems fixing guild missions is a low priority atm.

GW1 = more build diversity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The biggest limiting factor for PvE in GW2 isn’t the number of builds, but the simple AI, condition capping, dodging being the best damage mitigation and cheesy boss mechanics which effectively nullifies whole swathes of potential builds.

As you can see it’s scarily close to what we got, with clones, use of illusions to distract enemies, retaliation, moa morph, speed boosts, shatters, glowy single handed swords and lots of spell effects.

I can only apologise for being one of the ones in that video giving Anet the ideas for the GW2 mesmer

Arenanet, your customers who are addicted

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shanaeri Rynale.6897

Shanaeri Rynale.6897

I guess it depends on the level of addiction. If it’s just a reminder that you played too long, well that can be done by means outside of the game or if it’s a matter of willpower then uninstalling works too.

The real issues comes when the addiction is so bad an ‘intervention’ is needed in that the account really needs to be banned or locked. I would suspect Anet would be in trouble if a person asked them to remove their access because it was affecting their health and Anet then didn’t and the person really did suffer health issues because of it.

In the end though, as with all addictions there are support organisations set up to help because if someone is determined to get back in they will find a way and imho getting help and support from outside the game from experts is the only and best way to proceed.

It’s been fun doing them, even though I was totally caffeinated most of the time due to being the UK and pyro et al being in the US. It was a real honor and pleasure to be asked to co-host them

I can understand why the SOAC team decided not to do them for a while, the Mesmer is not in a healthy place right now and with so many unfixed bugs its hard to know if the failings are the class or because it’s not working as intended and in truth it’s probably better to stop them now rather than have it become a kitten fest every couple of weeks.

I’m still confident that eventually Anet will get the class and indeed the game mechanics right(which, along with the bugs, is I feel the root cause of the Mesmer issues) and when that comes hopefully we can kick start things again

Are all rewards going to be available as if we were doing them for the first time(e.g toxic backpacks and the like)

Is this fair on new players who paid the same for content as we did, and now have to pay more to play the same content as we did?

Looking over the LS season 2 blurb I spotted this “Past episodes will be available for purchase for 200 gems”

Does this mean if we want to reply any LS content we need to pay for it in gems? Is it an unlock a chapter forever fee for every account or is it character bound? If we pay for a chapter can we team with people who haven’t?

Personally, not sure how I feel about this move. To me it seems to step over the ‘morality line’ and move GW2 to a payment model I don’t really like..

Losing Fan Support! :(

While I agree with many of the points they have made I think it’s more complex than that.

With an official forum, wiki, podcasts and youtube all able to add guides, commentary and advice in a far more user friendly and accessible way pure forum based fan sites are always going to have a tough time of it.

Also, people in general are far more used to watching a guide on youtube than browsing a forum and in most cases the creator spends much less time making said guide as typing it out, checking it and doing all the images takes way more time than actually playing through it and recording it

So yes there is some truth to what they say, but it’s not the entire picture.

Hackers Ghousts

in WvW

Shanaeri Rynale.6897

If I were on FSP I’d be really annoyed that all the hard work they did overnight has been tainted by a few morons and people who joined in with the morons as there is no way to tell if the effort put in overnight wasn’t helped by hackers also.

So imho it’s hurts FSP more as from now on every victory will be tainted by the actions of a few.

The very best thing to do is imho for people who witness hackers is just to back away and not exploit the gains made by hacking and to report them asap.

So you want us to completely derail our battle plans mid execution because we ran up on Hills and saw that outer gate was open and have no proof one way or the other that it was a hack or a legitimate open? Because if that’s the case we just need to not go into WvW because we don’t know what the hacker(s) is/are doing. If you have a better idea please enlighten me because it sounds like you just don’t want us to play because we have no control over a hacker. Your method would work if the guy was saying “Hey guys I opened Hills for you come take it!” But it isn’t working like that.

It’s nothing to do with not wanting anyone to play, just that when people see a hacker at work on their own server(no matter which one it is) they should just stop, announce to map chat and report them rather than just rush in and carry on as if nothing has happened.

Please note I said it doesn’t matter what server is doing it, only that the server that has people hacking on them should be even more vociferous and strict about hacking because ultimately it’s their reputation they are harming. It’s like having a sports team where one player is taking drugs, it doesn’t just affect the drug taking player but the reputation of the whole team.

If enough people(esp those on the hackers server) report it, Anet will take notice. While it’s just a few, esp on the opposing server Anet is less likely to action it, as it could be seen as just being sour grapes.

TLDR: If Anet won’t clean up this hacking mess(on any server) , the players have to.

AFIK they are still not being worked on, but their introduction has not been ruled out. So it’s not a never, just a not yet.

I suspect making a bog standard guild hall is fairly easy, but with games now offering more customisation options(rift, landmark etc etc) Arenanet would want to make them as feature rich as in other games. I.e something not worth doing if it’s not worth doing right.

Also, while GH’s would be great, perhaps Anet’s feelings is that people would hang out in there rather than the open world thus making the game seem… emptier.

The reality is, you cannot force anyone to represent. The worst you can do is kick them which tbh if they are not representing is no big deal.

The onus is on the guild leader to make their guild such a fun/suitable/active etc place to be the members want to represent and join in. Your guild members are your ‘customers’ and they will go wherever suits their needs the best. If you want to grow and maintain your guild that had better be you

Saying that the multi-guild system here is next to useless, When you don’t represent it has the same effect as leaving one guild and joining another. Why there’s not the ability to see the guild chats of all the guilds you belong to is beyond me.
