Edit: I see some posts here referencing statements that seem to answer my post whereas other statements seem to suggest there is no clarification yet – sorry if it has in fact been truly answered
Hesitant to post here since I know my question may likely get lost in the sea of posts… but I’m curious if Anet is referring to all AOE in a blanket sense, or if they mean aoe attacks that are also stapled on to relatively strong direct damage attacks.
For example, meteor shower is in ability that does no direct damage to any single target upon cast (meaning activating the ability itself does not direct damage a target).
On the other hand, Fireball is an ability that does direct damage as well as aoe damage.
I wonder if perhaps they are more concerned with things like the latter (Fireball) which does both direct and aoe damage moreso than pure AoE spells (like Meteor Shower).
I’m merely curious.. I hope they do clarify… but I guess I shall see regardless when the patch hits. Also, if there IS clarification on this already and I missed it, I do apologize – I try to collect accurate info but sometimes it’s hard to get all sources of dev posts etc.
Hi all,
This post assumes that one has the trait V in arcane (Elemental Attunement). It also involves (but doesn’t require) trait VIII in air (Inscription).
Has anyone noticed sometimes (not always), switching to earth attunement and casting Glyph of Elemental Harmony does not always result in getting any additional protection boon (other than the protection granted by Elemental Attunement trait)?
This is even more costly if you invest in the air trait “Inscription” since the glyph is not giving the boon at all.
I have tested this by trying to cast the glyph both during my attunement swap (i.e., start casting in one element then attune to air before it finishes) and after I already attunement swapped. Both ways result in the inconsistent bug sometimes.
I find that this is a useful way to get a decent duration of Protection when you’re taking a lot of hits, but the fact that it doesn’t work sometimes can be very costly
It may be buggy with other boons too, by the way, but I notice with Protection because it is usually a short duration boon that I am inclined to notice more since it is useful for survival.
Hi,
is it possible to somehow buy single items from vendors more than 1 item at a time?
For example, if I want to purcahse 100 of an item from a vendor, do I need to click the “buy” button 100 times? Or can I somehow do a combination of buttons that lets me choose a bulk value?
Thanks so much!
Thanks a lot mr. moderator Knowing this was noticed and forwarded is very much appreciated.
A suggestion to other folks: let’s try to contribute some of these vague tooltips in a concise manner so that the devs can find them among our posts easily. (e.g., using the actual ability name and any error(s) in the tooltip).
I’m all about putting time into the math of our builds… such as testing builds on training dummies in heart of the mists… etc. etc…
The problem is without accurate/useful tooltips, it becomes NOT a matter of spending time bettering yourself; It becomes some vague/ambiguous guessing game.
Just another thing to add to the list: some things affect your tooltip information while other things do not (e.g., between runes, gear, and traits, i know that for one of these, if you get +% condition/boon duration, it wont actually reflect in your tooltips)
Anet said recently the next few big patches will be focused on current content and enriching what already exists rather than new content. I really hope they mean addressing this type of thing.

I’d rather have this skill occupy my elite skill slot. I would actually be able to utilize it occasionally then :p
It can’t come soon enough
Can’t you group up outside the JP entrance then zone in together to fight the campers?
I don’t do the JP much so I’m asking on a serious note. Perhaps there’s a limitation I’m unaware of.
I too am seriously disappointed with the inconsistent and vague tooltips in this game.
My biggest pet peeve in this game is the inconsistent and loosely used term “projectile.” Specifically in defensive abilities – im not talking about a projectile combo finisher.
To give a simple example:
Wall of reflection (guardian ability) reflects projectiles
Swirling winds (elementalist ability) destroys projectiles
It is extremely common that these two abilities mismatch in what they can stop. On old Tom for example (Harpy FOTM boss mid-way), swirling winds works on the poison bolts but wall of reflection doesn’t. (Even if this weren’t true, there are endless, similar scenarios where two abilities that affect “projectiles” act inconsistently.
How are players supposed to deduce that? Why do two abilities that affect projectiles not always affect the same attacks?
It really bothers me. I get around it by testing things extensively on training dummies.. But the amount of time I’ve spent doing so is astronomical.

Hi OP,
I can relate- when I did my first dungeons in GW2 I felt that they were way too fast-paced, difficult, and not fun. At all.
BUT, I came to realize that I was judging dungeons based on my perceptions of dungeons in previous MMORPG’s, and I realized that wasn’t fair.
I’m not sure if you have any history of playing other MMO’s, but for me, GW2 was way different. At first I found GW2 dungeons to be way too fast-paced and spammy – I felt like I didn’t even know what I was doing because I was barely staying alive just dodging and avoiding crap on the ground.
I can say, if you like other parts of GW2, try to hang in there and give it time and practice. I can now say that when I play other MMO’s, I find that they feel too slow – GW2 now feels like it’s the “right” speed for me.
Think of it as a learning curve. It has been a long, long time since a video game actually challenged me…. and GW2 did that when I first started doing dungeons. If you can think of it like that, maybe it’ll help.
If you still don’t find them fun, I understand and perhaps it isn’t the right game for you. I know many people here will tell you you suck and that’s why you find dungeons hard – I doubt that’s the case. Maybe it just isn’t your style.
But if you like a challenge and are willing to put in a bit of practice, you can alter what you view as a normal dungeon which may be based on previous MMO experience.
Edit: I will admit that aoe red circles on the ground, mixed with the insane amount of “particle” effects in the game, is quite problematic sometimes. I do think something could be done about this.
I’d really hate for them to turn graphics down across the board, but maybe allowing one to turn down particle density would be a good way to let people optionally tone things down.

Regarding the OPs example: did the person with the highest agony resist also have the highest Hp? since you all had different levels of AR and vitality I am just curious.
Not saying this explains any/everything; just asking out of curiosity.
Deleted my post, just saw you are on European servers.
Sorry!

Just thought I’d post to support some news on lionguard Lyns.
I’m at peace with whatever decision anet makes regarding her keys; I just simply want to know one way or the other because I have so many items taking up bank space- I’m waiting to see if I need to donate these for commedetions or salvage them for ectos.
While I’d love to be able to buy keys again, I understand if they remove them: just tell us so I can get my bank space back
The lightning auto attack is great for high precision builds that grant bonuses on crit
(examples: 1. Food that restores HP on crit, 2. Sigils that apply conditions on crit 3. Traits we have that apply conditions on crit (burning, vulnerability). Just to name a few.
Basically it’s a good attack for getting the most out of crit proc builds when targets are fairly spread apart.
There’s good points on both side of the argument here.
For me, personally, I see no foul play in letting real life money buy gems which allows one to buy gold.
Essentially people have two resources to purchase things with: real life money or time (I.e. making money in game instead of using real life money).
I can totally see how some wouldn’t like this feature, I just don’t share that feeling. I have little money to spare in real life but lots of time at the moment, so I enjoy spending more time instead of money. Time is a resource I have at the moment, money isn’t.
I know I’m not contributing much but just thought I’d add.
I truly do love my ele, and having tried other alts, I realized ele is for me. I love the class and I’m not settling when I say that.
That being said, and maybe I’m being selfish, it still bothers me how different we were “advertised” pre launch compared to the recent philosophy of the elementalist
profession. I guess in a way it makes me feel nervous about the devs’ devotion to establishing elementalists’ identity and just letting us become whatever we happen to become.
So I don’t feel unhappy, but I still want to be shown by devs that they have a more stable identity in mind for us.
I still don’t have an official answer but if you read the patch notes carefully it tends to lean heavily towards saying BL chests do not contain wintersday items.
The notes specifically talk about the special new wintersday chests and what’s inside them. It also talks about how these can be obtained alternatively through direct gem purchase.
On the other hand, they specifically talk about the BLC overhaul and the new items that can be obtained from them.
Of course this still isn’t official, but with no mention whatsoever of any similar items between the two, I think it’s safe to say the BLC so far don’t contain wintersday items.
i’m going to open about 25 or 30 BLC and see.
I’m also dying to know the answerto this.
I have a TON of keys saved up from the mystic forge conversion.
I’m fine whether the BLC have wintersday items or not, but I am just dying to use all these keys… ahh!! And whether or not wintersday items are a possible gift inside may affect how many keys I hold on to for the future vs. use now.
Anyway, happy Wintersday everyone!
It’s crazy how long this method of obtaining BL keys has been possible yet how quiet it’s been til recently.
I’m guilty of not knowing myself until a week ago… Fortunately had a lot of mats saved. I woder if they’ll remove this feature eventually?
Strictly speaking, isn’t the only reason it’s profitable now due to the increased cost of gems vs. gold? I thought someone did the math when lost shores first started out and it turned out not to be worth it then.
Im not really talking from a profit perspective – what I mean is being able to utilize mats in game to get black lion keys in game – mats you already have.
I realize previously one could sell all the mats instead and make the money to buy gems and convert these to BL keys at a possibly cheaper rate.. but In some cases (I.e. lacking time) people like me who hoard all their resources had a very quick way to get some BL keys without doing the math and the conversions and the buying/selling of multiple individual items.
So yes from a pure profit perspective you’re probably right. But from a convenience standpoint, I enjoy, for example, throwing rare trinkets I get into the forge for commendations rather than salvaging, selling the ectosl converting to gems, etc.
That plus I like to use the gem conversion as little as possible to avoid contributing tithe watering down of the gem values.
Oh and for the record (not sure if I’ve mad this my obvious point): I think it’s great they have multiple methods to obtain them. Options are good. You can use RL money, game money (convert to gems) or gather/buy all the mats. Seems like there’s a good method for most types of players.
Edit: one last thing – the conversion to commendations was also a great alternative for people like me who have jewelry of every time for trying to test out builds – pieces that’s know I’ll never make builds around I can now use to get commendations, which is a cool bonus on what was basically rotting in my bank as junk
(edited by Shlamorel.8714)
Not sure if it’s against the rules OP but I got yelled at in Lions Arch for selling exotic jewelry in map chat by many people who said “stop spamming map
Chat” or “use the TP kitten.” And I only advertised twice.
I’m fine adjusting to the community norms, I just wasn’t used to this in an mmo so it caught me off guard.
At launch I was hoping I could eventualy establish myself as a reputable chef/jeweler that people on my server could trust with their orders, and therefore maybe we could both save a little money (I save on listing fee and therefore come down a bit on price for the ). The reputation is still possible to establish but much harder since we can’t really advertise anywhere.
Stinks but I suppose that’s just the way things go. Maybe your server is different though.
Also while we are at it, a cash on delivery system would rock in the mail service…it prevents scamming, however, I believe this would not give the gold sink anet is looking for which I do understand the need for a gold sink.

Been wondering about this… would love to be able to sell mine.
I can see this being a low priority so that isn’t a big deal… but since they made a patch specifically to make them unbound, they kinda made it a high priority. So to make a patch that just divided the way tonics work (based on when you open the bag) is interesting.
I’m assuming it’s a bug but I can see why, on some level, they may have done it intentionally. An answer either way would be appreciated
I just want a community that is more helpful and isn’t a bunch of kitten.
Check out the “players helping players” subforum – the folks there are generally very friendly and helpful. I find that to be a great spot to post if you’re looking to get helpful community answers
I too spec’d my first toon, an ele, to be heavy on healing because that’s my favorite thing to do.
Unless they’ve changed it, though, what sucks is that you don’t get rewarded at all for it. When I was trying to play support/healer, I ended up with more silver and bronze hearts than gold.
DEs should reward you for your activity, not your damage.
That’s one thing that hasn’t changed – the hearts from events are often determined by damage done.
I’m actually ok with that part, because I understood coming into the game that I wouldn’t be devoted to support/healing 100% of the time like other games. So I’m ok with having to dish our a moderate amount of damage.
It’s been a compromise I’ve been learning to adjust to since I like other parts of GW2 so much I figure this is an area I can work on bending a little.
There really ought to be a subtle way of letting players know when they are being healed and supported. I would like to know who is supporting me and I want other players to know I am helping them. This might help in building player relationships.
I agree, and you actually put into words what I would have to like to have been able to say more shortly: I dont ask Arena Net to go back on their game design; just make the support that we do more noticeable.
In other words I don’t need them to make players more reliant on my heals and buffs… I just need them to know when I am actually helping them so they can know.
Warning: LONG RESPONSE incoming. Propbably a boring (skippable) read for most people. OP, I think it will answer your question.
I think GW2 has done a good job at making survival everyne’s own priority and minimzied the trinity without eleminating the need to work together.
However, players can still have a significant role through trait and rune choices in the game more than they realize.
The vast majority of individuals expeirment with a very few set of runes and sigils, as these tend to maximize dps. That’s fine that DPS is their priority – just know that with rune and sigil choices you can do a lot of life-saving in your party if you’re ok losing some DPS.
For example, using the rune of Dwayna puts regeneration on your party every time you heal yourself. A water attunement elementalist can have this effect also cure conditions on everyone through a trait that benefits from the rune effect.
My point is, to step outside the box and be a support/tanking/utility character in this game, it is very possible – you just have to learn to synergize trait choices with runes and sigils.
All this being said, I find that, in one way, their de-emphasis of the trinity has the negative side effect of concealing support players even more. Players like you and I, with a “healer” mindset or a mindset of supporting others do so at the cost of DPS – which is fine; But support in this game is often an invisible or unnoticed act, which make people really unaware that you’re helping them most of the time.
For example, in the scenario I gave above (water attune elementalist using Dwayna runes), I can keep the party topped off and free of conditions, yet there is no way my teamates know when I am helping them or not. In my guild this is fine because they know my role and they appreciate me; however, when I pug, I have sometimes been perceived as a lower dps/sucky player and been told so.
Another example is that I’ve been told by guildies “man I like partyin with you, we seem to die less.” When I explained to them that I am keeping regen on them 100% of the time and protection boon on them 80% of the time, they were completely unaware I was granting these things. I don’t need an award or anything for doing my support job. I simply wish there were signs that I was helping them (example., beside the green floating text above your head that says the value you’re healed for, perhaps it could include the name of the person who gave that heal.)
To get the feeling you desire, you’re going to have to find a smaller group of people (guild, friends, etc.) that you play with on a regular basis and who know what your role is. When doing dynamic events and pvp with strangers, you can cast every boon on the game on all the random folks around you but they have no obvious way of knowing you’re the one doing it; they won’t be likely to protect you so that you can heal them andthey won’t stand by you for being a good healer. This is because they usually don’t even know you’re doing anything.
it’s not their fault either; they just have no visual indication in most cases who is helping them.
In sum, the biggest part of the trinity loss isn’t that we lose the role of being support; Support in GW2 has a significant impact on the outcome of battles… but there is simply no visual event on the screen that lets people know you are helping them most of the time.
Edited for spelling.

This is my first time experiencing latency issues in GW2. It started today after I logged in – first time since the mini patch (not sure if they are related).
I admit it could be my ISP. Since I have never had lag in GW2 though it’s hard for me to determine the cause.
In game, my chat has a 1-2 second delay, and my abilities have a 5-15 second delay if they go off at all. Sometimes my abilities will just keep flashing like they are in queue to use but they are never used.
Players around me actually seem to be moving in real-time correctly. It’s almost as if certain things are loading appropriately and other things are lagging.
I will be checking up with ISP to see if that is the issue – just posting here in case others are having the same trouble.
Edit: I’m on Sea of Sorrows if that matters.

Oh wow, thanks a lot.
I really appreciate you sharing that link.
I’m in your debt
Thanks I was recently reading up on that.
How can i get Lionguard Lins to offer me items for sale? When I talk with her it’s just a looping conversation.
Does anyone know the % chance you have to get a black lion key for exploring a map as opposed to transmutation stones?
The wiki says either of these two are possible rewards. but doesn’t say the chances.
Posting individual results is fine from your own completion is fine, but I’m more interested in if there’s an official drop rate given or calculated by someone who has the data, as individual luck will make large differences from one person to another.
Thanks for any input
Staff
Fire skill 1 – 21-22 attacks – 5966 damage
Earth skill 1 – 21-22 attacks – 3885
I have no idea how this wiki information can even be accurate.
I’m looking at my auto-attack tooltips right now as I type this and the fire auto-attack is listed as having a 1 second cast time, while the Earth (and air and water) auto-attacks all have a 3/4 of a second cast time.
I don’t see how the fire and earth attunements can have the same amount of auto-attacks in a 30 second window when the tooltips themselves have a 25% difference in cast time.
If I’m reading anything wrong here please fill me in.
P.S. I realize you’re copy and pasting data from wiki – I’m not shooting you, the messenger
Glad to hear at least one other person knows what I’m talking about, leviathan. I have asked others in-game about it and they don’t know what I’m talking about.
Are you using an nvidia card?
Could anyone tell me what setting may be causing the following problem:
When I have culling issues in gw2, I also simultaneously get color changes and a more “blurred” image on my screen.
Specifically, my reds and oranges become more greenish in tint (e.g., my fire as an elementalist has a noticeable green tinge to it). And the blurring is almost like bloom except it’s bloom gone too far – everything is just less defined but NOT jagged… just blurry.
Since this only happens when I’m also having trouble rendering things in-game, I’m assuming I have a setting enabled somewhere that is making my game/pc automatically try to save resources or something by blurring my image and making my colors different. The interesting thing is… if rendering is a game problem and not a pc problem, why would my pc change to a server-side problem?
I never have fps issues, in wvw the lowest i drop to is 30-40, but usually I’m at 60 (I have fps capped at 60 to save power).
I’m doing trial and error testing right now with my nvidia control panel, but I thought maybe someone else could help me save time in the meantime if they knew what was up.
Thanks for your time.
Im just glad that SoS map chat is usually fun whenever the commanders are around. having commanders that know how to work humor into their strategies are able to make people follow their leads better. if you can go online when SoS is most active, the chats are so funny that it motivates you to stay in wvw even if you’re losing
Agreed.
Enjoying wvw a lot this week… Keep it up SoS
Sorry if already said, but:
I know in mist form I can still take condition damage like bleed and burn.
Perhaps we can be immobilized in mist form too?
I haven’t tested myself, just offering this as a possible counter to try on us eles in these situations… That way perhaps a nerf can be avoided.
Edit: guy above me beat me… Seems we can be cc’d. Sould be possible to counter our downed state then
Okay but here is the problem with that. Afaik, you can’t root during vapor form…and ele can vapor form immediately after downed state. So you would basically have to preemptively root him the exact moment before you kill him. Because if you root him after he is downed, it will be too late. And if you root him too early, the immobilize will wear off in time for him to get inside.
So that is really not much of a counter. It sounds good in theory craft, but practically, it will hardly ever be viable.
Look, I’m not exactly advocating a big nerf here…just saying that downed state 2, shouldn’t be able to go through portals…that’s it. The only thing this will cause is to make ele’s just as kill able as any other class in keep defense. I mean, it’s not like we are lacking defenses.
Edit: just read that a player loses all conditions when downed…which makes this counter almost impossible.
I can have burns and bleed cast on me while im in mist or vapor form, so what i was saying is id assume you can root them while they are in mist/vapor. If so, you wouldn’t have to rely on doing it pre-empetively.
I actually don’t mind your perspective so I hope I didnt come off that way. I simply disagree that our downed state allows endless/invulnerable siege defense. I’m ok with agreeing to disagree.

I wish they’d have a swap slot for us to stick an alternate set in, BUT ONLY allow the swap when out of combat. I’m getting sick of popping my inventory to put on a staff. Just make it so if you try to swap while in combat, you get the red warning text like normal.
A million times this.
I don’t mind needing to be out of combat at all… I just find it so frustrating to take up my, screen for a few moments to switch out weapons/gear constantly in wvw.
Again, I don’t mind not having weapon swap, just pleeease give us ways to save gear sets to swap when out of combat.
Using the hero tab certainly helps, but it still takes up a large portion of the screen
On the most recent AMA post on reddit, someone posed this question to a developer and they asked the poster to contact him (the developer) privately to share data/info about this issue and to discuss it further.
I found this to be extremely out of character with the rest of the fairly-useful dialogue where the dev was responding to questions openly.
Would like to know what came of the conversation, if one took place…
Which server? and what bug?
Hi,
Are any guilds/groups planning a run on temple of Balthazaar anytime soon? On the Sea of Sorrows server, that is.
It’s all I need for my legendary and I haven’t seen it in our possession in the past few days (at least when I was awake)
If anyone is planning it / would like to do it, let me know! Would love to try and arrange to be on so I can get the rest of the mats I need.
Thanks in advance
Edit: I did see the part where you said you don’t have the money to buy the exotics. I didn’t find the prices to be steep at all – I was able to cover the cost of the gear just from wvw. However, if you’re having a hard time finding the money and aren’t enjoying the game, I understand your view and wish you the best.
Original post:
Check the TP, I think you can buy exotic level 80 gear with the stats you want. Type “knight’s” into the search box, and use any filters that help you narrow down the piece you want.
I use the same stats on one set of my gear, and like you, didn’t enjoy the dungeon that sold that stat combo armor.

Wow I’ve never noticed the white outline before… I’ll have to check next time.
Wow thanks for sharing. Never would have seen this because I don’t read Spvp forums.
That is really cool to hear that they sometimes take copies of well-written posts to balance meetings. I like how he specifically said “well-written”… Implying that taking time to craft a coherent and objective discussion is more ikely to be taken into consideration than a diatribe/rant.
Cool stuff.
I’ve played a healer in every single mmo and loved it.
I miss targeted heals in all of them and would love it in gw2.
However, the game advertised itself as a trinity-breaker, and I think it’d be unfair to many players who bought the game to go back on that. As much as I miss targeted healing, I came into gw2 knowing we wouldn’t have them so I can’t bring myself to hope they change it.
Also I must add that there are many ways to heal and protect teammates In the game. It may not be targeted heals but I think many of the games methods promote a higher level of awareness, which is good.
But no one is arguing for the return of the trinity.
Healing other people does not equal the trinity. Just as blocking damage intended for an ally does not equal tanking.
ArenaNet launched with the ability for some classes to spec more into a support role, including healing others. They even told people if you like the Monk in GW1, you should play the Guardian. However, the new 5-man limit has broken group healing.
Now, either they can be clear that they don’t want anyone to effectively heal others in the game. Or, they can make so you can again effectively heal others. The best way to do this is probably to up the 5-man limit. If that’s not possible, the only other solution is target heals.
I should have said dedicated healers rather than using the broad trinity term, my apologies.
The 5 player limit on heals is not really what I was trying to get at with my response so much as I was getting at the ability to target heal someone quickly. So I don’t really have anything else to contribute to the topic. I mean the limit does kinda stink, but I also see how it promotes other types of gameplay and strategy.
Regardless, I enjoy stacking boon duration and heAling power and keeping my allies topped off and buffed up to mitigate damage. It’s definitely a different type of play than I’m used to – still getting used to it.
Can anyone confirm that the proc occurs when you are hit by an enemy?
I could have sworn the tooltip once stated that the proc had a chance to occur when YOU hit an enemy.
Thanks for any clarification. I’d test myself but won’t be around my pc for a while.

If someone is so scared of me in wvw that they have to alt f4 as a last resort, I relish it.
Screw the badges, I just crit them so bad my [Sigil of Computer Crash] procced! The proc rate is über low but the effect is worth it.
Urthona stole my words.
As a support ele, this rune combo can give excellent benefits to the party.
I do wish there were other combinations that were more attractive. I like having to piece together a set bonus more than a full uniform set. That being said, we have tons of choices in the rune sets themselves so I am definitely not complaining
Congratulations, and all the best SoS.
A lot of good guilds, and many friends moved from our server (DB) to SoS for more competitive WvW; it’s good to see their strategy pay good dividends.
Thanks for the encouragement
I remember your name from DB.
