If you had 10 in Water you would have the option to use a couple of conditional damage modifiers of 10%-20%, that’s all I can think of honestly.

However, there’s no reason to take a rando’s opinion to heart in that situation.

You’re better off just thinking about it for a second and seeing if their’s any obvious validity to the opinion, and letting it go if not.

Any class can technically be built into support – but I guess most pick it as a secondary backup choice.

A dungeon run I was in a few days ago was with a party of damage dealers. After we found it wouldn’t work, a few of us switched to our supportive skill sets. We got through the dungeon quickly after that. There are support roles, but everyone takes a bit of the work, instead of dumping all the responsibility on one person.

That’s what I wish was different, as well as others based upon what I see in this thread.. DPS is the only primary role that exists, support, and control are only secondary roles. They aren’t primary roles.

Honestly the woes of the different stat combinations could have been avoided if the game would have been designed to allow players to distribute stats however they want according to their build with no cost.

It makes the players feel like they have more control, and it would avoid people feeling pigeon-holed into builds they’d rather not play due not being able to experiment.

How people end up feeling about something is honestly more important than anything else. Social pressure dominates. The more people that like you, your company, what you do, etc, the more ingrained something becomes as acceptable and the more people you reach.

I played GW1 and funnily enough one of the main builds for a monk in the meta was built around bindings, which usually required quite little active playing

Is that the good ol’ life bond build you’re talking about? That’s a good example of a more passive build.

I preferred Prot or Prot/Heal hybrid builds using a combination of skills like Patient Spirit, Cure Hex, Draw Conditions, Spirit Bond, Protective Spirit, SoA, Seed of Life, Aegis, Selfless Spirit, and an elite of either WoH, Healing Burst, or Divert Hexes. I used very active builds like that becuase I enjoyed the challenges they present, due to them being higher skill cieling highly effective builds.

I think we’re just talking semantics. To me, a player who used to play Guild Wars maining a Monk actively identifying and utilizing different skills ever couple seconds or less to prevent and recover from damage and debuffs, using a skill every 30 seconds is very passive.

But that is not the meaning of the word passive.
The word passive suggest NO active interaction at all.
Maintaining might stacks is a VERY active job (unless everyone is running Warriors with Forceful Greatsword and 75% crit chance)

Again semantics. Using a skill to maintain an effect every 10 seconds, which is less passive than using a skill every 20 to maintain an effect, which is less passive than using a skill every 30, which is less passive than using a skill every 60.

There’s obviously multiple ways to maintian 25 stacks of might, but to call that a support role on a team is hardly the case. It’s a secondary purpose. Also the most optimal way of maintain might is the most passive, because people look for long duration might. The longer the duration the more passive it is.

A 20+ second duration effect from the game that I came from was EXTREMELY passive. You don’t have to just take my word for it, if you know of anyone else that played Guild Wars just ask them.

Passive would suggest that it gives you all those stacks of Might without any player interaction, which I am quite sure isn’t the case. And thus it is made by Support.

In a lot of the popular builds you’ll see people use, it doesn’t really require much active thought if any to get might stacks and fury. Just fire off the skill and forget about it and reuse once it’s recharged. You’ll see some groups that might call out when a fire field is dropped at which point everyone uses their blast finisher, but that’s the extent of thinking required.

It’s mostly passive, once around every 30 seconds that people use those support skills.

How is healing any more skill intensive? Even worse, regeneration stacks duration do you only have to check whether it’s active whereas with might it stacks intensity; you want to keep up high might stacks rather than a few, and you need to make sure your short term stacks don’t override long teens ones, crippling group dps (major examples being empowering might and forceful Greatsword, they aren’t as good as they look when people are using lightning hammer on fire field and for great justice since you get your 20s stacks replaced by 5s stacks. Of course I’m guessing you’ve never run in an organised group so you wouldn’t know the little intricacies of high level tactics which involve plenty of support, and when necessary chaining CC against brutal trash mobs to stop them firing off lethal skills. Stacking vulnerability and capping it also requires a lot of attention to the stacks themselves and whether your skills are on cooldown.

I was actually referring to FGJ and Fire blast finishers without completley saying so. The might intensity duration issues you are referring to simply come down to people not utilizing low duration might in their build.

But honestly the might stacks being at 25 all the time only impacts the time in which an enemy is defeated.

FGJ and fire blast finishers are still very passive. Fire and forget like I said, use upon recharge. Tell people a firefield drops everyone using their blast finisher. Or just run a LH ele and have warriors, guardians, whoever chain fire field drops, while everyone stacks.

It’s not intricate, it’s figure it out once and do it over and over and over.

Which makes it an active skill rather than a passive.
But then again, why can’t Support be passive in some cases?
Just because you don’t think about using it doesn’t mean you don’t use it after all.

I think we’re just talking semantics. To me, a player who used to play Guild Wars maining a Monk actively identifying and utilizing different skills ever couple seconds or less to prevent and recover from damage and debuffs, using a skill every 30 seconds is very passive. Just as I’m sure to people who played WoW using a skill for its effects every 1-2 minutes is very passive.

The point I’m driving at, is that DPS dominates this game. Within PvE there’s little value in controlling enemy movement or timing interrupts, because of passive debuffs on the enemy and passive buffs on the party. While support and control exist, there’s no active awareness required about them. It makes combat very shallow and stale for someone like me.

I was under the impression that most DPS builds focused around having high amounts of Might and long duration of Fury. Both of which are applied due to Support.

Some of the things that need to change in order to make support and control a primary party role:

  • Defiance (as it exists, it currently destroys any opportunity of a control role)
  • Recharge time of control effects (daze, stun, knockdown, launch, etc.)
  • Availability of conditions (blind, weakness, fear, chill, cripple, vulnerability, etc.)
  • Durations of support/control effects (Feedback, Swirling Winds, Line of Warding, Black Powder, etc.)
  • Attack frequency of enemies
  • Ground targeted/AoE AI
  • AI prioritization of DPS, Support, Control roles

This wouldn’t even be everything, plus these are high level concepts that need modified. This is why the game as it exists in production will not see Support/Control roles until a couple of years down the line at least, if ever.

The OP has a completely valid point, though the focus is too much on healing.

Neither support nor control are valid playstyles in and of themselves. DPS rules this game. It’s really the only primary role, and that’s part of what makes combat stale.

While I would love for there to be another primary role besides DPS, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Maybe 3 years down the line, but ANet designed this game in a way that expects every player in a group to be primarily DPS, and they’re unlikely to want to shake the game up and risk backlash from the current user base. Other roles besides DPS, if they happen at all, would be a slow phasing in over time, but don’t expect to see a primary role of healing ever.

If a non-dps is what you want to play, don’t waste your time here. You’ll have to play non-dps roles in another game.

one with air trait?

Shockwave.1230

Ok, we’ll just have to agree to disagree then. I can’t see anything simpler, cheaper or easier for PvE exploring than a single minor (adept) trait to give you near perma-swiftmess after just 50secs, which can also be very easily swapped out for something more functional if you’re traited for air anyway. Other classes like ranger & necro have a single signet to achieve this, elems unfortunately don’t. (For reference, I run my necro with the Signet of the Locust & even add Spectral Walk when I’m just exploring or doing non-combat Daily crap – easy enough to swap both out for more pets or other skills b4 getting into more difficult combat – I used to run twin dagger with the 25% speed trait, but changed to all-ranged staff+scepter/focus build more recently for various reasons).

As it stands now, you have to use some combo of the following to gain permaswiftness:
Windborne Speed, Glyph of Elemental Harmony/Power and the Inscription and/or Elemental Attunement traits. How this is ‘better’ overall in anyone’s right mind, apart from the 8% more speed, is beyond me.

Thank god they didn’t also hit Ride The Lightning with the nerf bat is all I can say!

Ele’s have signet of air, which grants a perma 25% IMS. Soon Windborne Dagger will be an out of combat trait as well. So you’ll probably be able to stack Signet of Air and have 1 dagger equipped to get the effect you want instantly, which used to take however many seconds to acheive.

Other issues related to redoing a characters appearance that people may not have otherwise done include:

  • Purchasing/Utilizing makeover kits to use with the flamekissed armor
  • Purchasing/Utilizing new dyes to use with the flamekissed armor
  • Purchasing/Utilizing new weapon skins to use with the flamekissed armor
  • Purchasing/Utilizing other armor skins to mix and match with the flamekissed armor

The first solution I can think of if the current stance stands as is for all the people impacted by downstream decisions such these, is to write detailed support tickets. That may result in a flood of tickets that would take customer support a while to resolve, because everything has to be handled on a case by case basis.

It’d be a good idea to identify issues here and attempt to resolve these in a way that satisfies everyone. For anyone not up to date on the current course of action, it is below.

Hey, everyone. We’ve been reading all your feedback about the Flamekissed Armor Skin that was released into the Gem Store yesterday.

Although the Flamekissed Armor uses the same mesh as the Tier 3 Human Cultural Armor, it was not our intention to create an armor skin that so closely matched the existing Tier 3 Human Cultural armor set. The intention was to use the mesh as a basis for creating an armor set that stands apart and is distinct in appearance. However, after reading your feedback, we agree that the Flamekissed armor is not visually distinct enough from Human Cultural Tier 3 armor.

We will do a few things to address this issue.

  • We will temporarily remove Flamekissed Armor Skin from the Gem Store.
  • Players who have purchased Flamekissed Armor Skin will keep the skin.
  • We will make new art for the Flamekissed Armor Skin that achieves our goal of making a visually distinct and attractive armor set and does not closely resemble the Human Tier 3 Cultural armor.
  • Once this new artwork is completed, we will then update the Flamekissed Armor Skin so that all existing sets that players have purchased get the new art. We will also offer the Flamekissed Armor Skin for sale again at that time.
  • When we update the Flamekissed Armor Skins with the new artwork, any player that has already purchased the set and who does not like the new, updated look, can get a full refund by contacting Customer Support.

Note that there is no ETA on when this change will happen. We need to work with the Character Art Team to determine when we can have a new armor skin ready, and this could take some time.

Thank you everyone for providing your feedback. We appreciate that you took the time to let us know how you feel about the new armor set.

Here are the issues that I see:

  • Flamekissed looks like a clone of Human T3 Cultural, so it’s like a cultural armor is available for all races
  • Flamekissed is half the price of Human T3 Cultural armor, this may resolve itself as inflation continues for the Gemstore/Gold exchange
  • Flamekissed as it exists was purchased by numerous players, it is clearly liked as is. Potential solution could be to offer another way to obtain the skin.
  • People have already converted Gold > Gems to obtain Flamekissed, meaning even a refund in equal gems would be a net less for them. Potential solution could be to identify those people and refund more gems than 800 to them.
  • People have already reskinned other rare armor skin/stat combination items, potentially leading to a loss of time or gold.
  • People have already re-runed reskinned armor to fit the new theme of their character, potentially leading to a further loss of time or gold

What kind of solutions can we think up, and what other issues are there that exist?

—snip—
Will they lose people? Undoubtedly. But the alternative may well have been to lose more people.

Honestly though, Vayne, I would just do what they did previously for power progression. Because that’s ultimately what this comes down to, power progression. There’s horizontal and vertical, horizontal is coming at some point they’ve said. They should do what they did in Guild Wars and tie the two together.

That was PvE skill & titles in Guild Wars. Now I’m not saying do the same exact implementation, but do the same concept. PvE skills were the horizontal progression, title progression was the vertical progression.

The power progression on the titles was very shallow, but noticeable. Skills had an increase in power with incremental power decreasing exponentially, which was brilliant. It was effectively diminishing returns on vertical progression.

This was a well thought out system. You could earn all the skills you wanted or just target, which skills you wanted. Additionally, the progression was spread out into categories (races, factions, etc.), so that the different categories could be progressed independently, but you were still progressing power for a group of abilities, instead of all skills or one skill.

Now this system by itself wouldn’t have been successful if it weren’t for the supporting cast of features in the game that supplemented the progression, such as campaign books, dungeons (nomal/hard mode), the story (normal/hard mode), and vanquishing. The other thing that made this work so well, was build diversity in Guild Wars. You could use the PvE skill progression to supplement your build or use some of the skills as the feature of the build.

There were obviously downsides to this system, such as Ursan Blessing, and other players having the option to see what your progression was on these titles. And for some of titles it wasn’t obvious, how to progress, and fairly daunting to progress.

Why not take the good, fix the bad, figure out a way to implement it into GW2 and do it. It was a really solid way to blend horizontal and vertical progression.

Can you not transmute items from an open bank tab?

I could pretty easily get arond spending gems on another transmutation stone by just buying a cheap exotic armor with the stats I want that isn’t soulbound.

Clearly ANet needs to make this a little more user friendly though.

Just because they have the mindset doesn’t mean they can produce the numbers. I Don’t care about mindsets, how knowledgeable someone is or claims to be, or how good they think they are – numbers is all that matters. What’s the point of playing with people of “that mindset” if I can’t see the proof?

I wanna see a numerical breakdown so leechers and underperformers can be kicked. Those folks can go do bad DPS soloing hearts or something, not slowing down groups.

Fortunately ANet will never do this.

Hopefully they also adjust their game so that DPS isn’t the best way to play PvE.

I don’t care if people have a personal DPS meter, just dont allow a player to see another player’s DPS meter.

I thought like before, but it would be nice to have a meter where you can see what everyone is doing this way you can kick the sub-par players from the group. If you can’t perform, get out. If you want all sorts of wacky builds, weapons and playstyles because “it’s more fun” then fine, go do solo stuff – don’t drag a group down.

I would imagine many, not all but many, of the people who are against meters are below average players. Why should a group have to contend with an unskilled player who can’t produce?

This is exactly why players shouldn’t be able to see other players’ dps. This type of attitude. If you want to play with the most efficient group possible, then play with people you know that have that mindset.

I don’t care if people have a personal DPS meter, just dont allow a player to see another player’s DPS meter.

Stop using WvW as a scapegoat, aside from rare 1v1s and any other scenario where the player count is even and for some odd reason only one side has full ascended and one side has full exotics, Ascended gear matters little. Many people who push at the fact that Full ascended gear is 15% better than full exotics are pointing at effective power of full serkers, I’m not sure how many full serker builds out there are viable in WvW. Lastly WvW is inherently unbalanced as said multiple times, and the stat difference of ascended vs Exotics gets blown out of the park when you just have 1 extra person in a small man fight.

People pointing to the manifesto as “proof” is wrong because half of them never even read it, they simply just heard someone talked about it. when this was shown to them and that no where in the manifest states there would be no gear progression, and in fact unless you skew what two of the things they’ve said to great extremity can you even think they’ve said it. Just like how the OP took out only a small part of what the devs said and took it out of context.

It’s perfectly valid for the OP to be upset with the minor power gear grind that exists. ANet had a history of having no power gear grind.

When they say they don’t want you to grind and you combine that with what they did historically, there’s no reason to not make the assumption they were talking about gear grind as well as grinding to have fun.

why people say there's no endgame

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

@ SHM

You’re just looking for content for when you are max level.

This would be the entire game you haven’t already done once you reach 80.

The things you are disqualifying as endgame are classically considered endgame by players, while other players do not classify it as endgame.

When people say there is no endgame it has 1 very simple meaning. It means there is a lack of content available that they enjoy doing.

I would agree that gear treadmills, be they power or cosmetic, are not content. It’s an obvious grind to get something via time spent over skill.

When you have enough people saying there is no endgame that’s the same thing as saying people don’t have anything worth doing after doing the story and reaching level 80. It just so happens that this is true of Guild Wars 2. The only things to do after the story, dungeons, and leveling are fractals and gear grind.

The reason is because auto attacks are weak and you have to cycle through your attunements and hit the damage skills on recharge in order to maintain solid dps that comes so easily to other professions.

In some situations there’s too much, in some situaitons there too little. In some situations there too much condition removal in some situations there too little condition removal.

It just needs balanced. Reducing the amount of conditions is one way, increasing cleanses is another. It doesn’t matter how, just balance it.

There are some very high level design issues pointed out here that need attention.

While Guild Wars was a much more refined game with a lot of depth, the important thing to remember about Guild Wars 2 is that it’s an MMO experiment.

It’s successful from a business perspective, because of the the Guild Wars IP (whose image has been tarnished in the eyes of many Guild Wars players due to the games revenue as opposed to the value returned to players). Another large part of it’s success on the business side was it’s marketing and timing, being a high quality MMO arriving after a large drought.

Clearly there is a lot of work to be done to refine the elements that Guild Wars 2 has introduced. One of the places they should start is by working on their own trinity and revisiting items such as defiant, conditions, anti-burst, etc.

The ele can maintain perma swiftness a number of ways. The old one with air functionality didn’t serve an purpose that couldn’t already be accomplished. It’s not an issue that it was changed, it’s just different and adds more tools for the elementalists to utilize.

The problem with your game for me...

@OP

I don’t really think the number of the level is the one single issue that exists in PvE. It’s really more that people don’t have the option to get to max level by doing the things that they like.

Using myself as an example. I like challenging content, a good story, and learning to play different play styles. Also I don’t like using my time in a way that I am not learning or entertained.

If I just go through PvE doing the story I can’t because of the power gating that occurs. That does make the content more challenging, but it quickly gets to the point where it’s not worth my time to bang my head against that wall.

If I just go to the challenging content in PvE with a new character, I can’t, because I’m not at an adequate level.

If I just want to learn a new playstyle with a new character, I can do that in a limited sense, but I don’t have everything available in PvE until level 80. So I very quickly learn how to use all the weapons, but can’t do anything else until I progress levels, which doesn’t happen at a pace I feel is worth my time unless I craft level, which requires a lot of resources that take a lot of time to get.

Basically the way I have to allocate my time in this game with alts isn’t worth my time, because the world is not new and I know what I like and don’t like about it. Additionally on my main, content is not interesting enough to cause me to want to login except for the 4 hours or less it take to get through the new content.

The game isn’t designed in a way that appeals to me spending time playing it, except for a handful of hours every other week.

That said, it is designed in a way that appeals to other people, and ANet continues to cater towards that crowd, because they know how to monetize their efforts far more from that crowd. That leaves people like me SoL, but that’s life and there’s other things people can spend their time on that they do enjoy.

Someone like me continues to post in the forums though, to gain perspective and try and influence ANet to make decisions that cater to a wider net of players that includes myself and others.

Your top 5 design mistakes in GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shockwave.1230

Shockwave.1230

1) Too much rewarding of time played > skill
2) Lack of incentive to de-concentrate player volume and spread it across the game world
3) Execution of the new trinity. It’s current incarnation promotes a DPS-fest style of play.
4) Combat mechanics promote zergfests/stacking, instead of well executed positioning
5a) Lack of emphasis on Storytelling/Lore
5b) Too much focus on grabbing money from customers without providing adequate value in return.

You guys want to hold ArenaNet to quotes taken a year ago or worse yet a manifesto taken five years.

But what if new information comes to light? What if the majority of players like to grind?

You wouldn’t want your doctor or stockbrooker using outdated information. Why should ArenaNet be any different?

No one likes grind, it implies wasting time.

The bigger issue I see is that there is nothing else the OP would like to do that will accumulate karma.

If there were something fun for the OP to do that also gained the OP karma then this thread likely wouldn’t exist.

The OP doesn’t get enough value out of what gains him/her karma to find it worth doing those things.

Everything in moderation as they say. I would not discount the very real lack of clarity/direction. I would prefer a better balance.

The MMO genre only pulls in 20% of the revenue for the entire gaming industry, not that every single other game has clear direction, but I think it’s safe to say that the majority of them do.

There’s definitely money to made by making things clear and potentially more users to be gained as well, not that this would solve every problem like the barren world all by itself as design changes are necesary.
