So… a solo “story mode” to unlock a “group mode”?

It makes no sense. I expected nothing and I’m still disappointed.

That part still needs clarification. But they make it a solo instance because of how many complained. lol how can you be disappointed? you haven’t even seen it yet. You are being unnecessarily cynical about this.

Two pictures hint at glowing armor. Maybe its a buff of some sort but I have not seen this before.

Legendary armour most likely. People were linking the codes for them in LA chat the other night.

I haven’t seen anyone suggest Kiel as the nemesis… we did meet her during F&F.

lol is this a troll? you seriously saw someone link legendary armor? i check reddit daily i think ida seen this. but if you find me those codes.

Dude, they are far to busy creating new ways to increase vertical progression so they can live up to their manifesto and original sales pitch.

lol how is this vertical progression? After this patch, you will be able to earn ascended through fotm(pve/hardcore), laurels(dailies/casual), guild missions(pve), and now wvw(pvp). Thats a pretty generous category of possible paths towards obtaining ascended items.

If the sylvari in the last picture is Canach then why is he wearing the molten gauntlets we got in the last update? That’s really pretty lazy anet.

I just noticed that too!! I dont think thats laziness tho, I think thats them hinting that Canach is tied to F&F. Perhaps he is the personal nemesis we are looking for. A certain npc in the prison section of the black citadel said that they were swayed by a silver-tongued, “snake-nose”, character. Now unless snake-nose is figurative, it literally would suggest a sylvari. They have no nose.

Not sure how I feel about the WvW changes… if we need laurels for the Asc gear, that would not be cool. New matchups might stink as well, seeing as how the disparity between tiers is kind of high, blow outs might be more likely this way.

“Just speak to the new Laurel and Badge Merchants on each map.”, you should be able to earn it through badges as well. My server definitely needs a new match up. Ive played SoS and SBI for like a month now.

Southsun Crates and DR

No it does not.

No it actually does. Anyone who has farmed since the update hit can speak for it. Its really apparent as well. You can go in with 300 MF and pick up like 4 rares and 2 crates in 30 minutes, then suddenly the drop rarity goes down the drain. It has to be DR.

Lets talk about weapon tickets

SkylightMoon.1980

Anet improved upon the methods of obtainment since F&F. I see these posts a lot. The truth is, if you farm a bit each day, b4 DR hits, get like 3 chests, do that for the entire chapter of SoS, you should have a good shot. The only thing is that DR is really inconsistent sometimes. There are days where I go out with all my MF ready, like 300, and farm for an hour, pick up 4 rares and 3 chests, then for an hour after that I pick up absolutely nothing. It sucks and I see it happen to other people. Im pretty sure I wasnt just lucky either.

Sclerite Weapons Tickets - Next to Impossible

in Last Stand at Southsun

SkylightMoon.1980

What’s the approximate drop rate for the southsun crates? and then what’s the RNG rate to get a ticket from the crates?

It seems like ArenNet has made it next to impossible for casual and even most hardcore gamers to get a ticket without purchasing a ton of tickets.

I think it’s ridiculous that the drop rates are so low that a casual gamer who really wants the weapon skins, are screwed.

I’ve spent probably 10+ hours farming the crates, and have gotten maybe 10-12 crates, with no ticket drop. I’ve also been frustrated and purchased 20 crates with no tickets.

This doesn’t seem to be achieving the goal of (I’m assuming) giving your players new content.

The same was with the molten weapons. I understand wanting them to be rare, but leaving it up to RNG and really low drop rates is punishing players.

Thats because DR hits. 70 crates is a good chance. And its easily doable with 3 crates a day with the amount of time we have left, which is what 23 or 24 days? I can get 3 crates in the first hour. After that im outta luck. If you farm each day 5 crates, than you have a very good chance. Don’t give up.

Op: the kind of guest chains you want is what I play single player games for, it is also why I stopped playing traditional MMO’s because I got tired of being stuck into a little box (instanced) with a bunch of people I didn’t know.
I hate instanced content- even more in this glorious open world because every time I have to go into an instance it keeps me from that world.

Some DE’s are fairly complicated, especially in the higher level maps.
I would love to see even more complicated DE’s and the things you describe can fit into this system very well.
I am pretty sure as the game develops more and matures we will see some of this.
The Living Story is already going along those lines but in a different way.
Just please keep the end of solo story lines out of 5 man instances.

As for the manifesto?
I bought the game back last May because of the manifesto, I haven’t been disappointed and I got exactly what I was expecting.

Thats not true. This game is an MMO and it has only one area of content likethat, its personal story. Plus these don’t need to be single player quests. They can easily be multiplayer, like F&F missions, or personal story. So no. Im suggesting they put more content like that in the game, along with DE’s, to create a balance. Ok so not everything in the Manifesto trailer is true, we’ve established that. Perhaps it will be at one point, but not now. Maybe yur standards are dif, I dno. But its clear to nearly everyone that gw2 is not yet at the point where Manifesto promises.

I think you misread my post.
I am not against instanced personal stories, I am against being forced to do instances with a bunch of random people (5 man parties)
I have no problem with having 5 man instances, I do have a problem if they do not scale so they are soloable – like the Flame and Frost stories did right up until MF dungeon- which meant that I could not complete a story I was following for months.

I understand what you are saying about more complicated guest chains- I am just not sure if making them instanced is such a good idea.
Someone up-thread had a great Idea for a player activated DE quest chain.
I would much rather see them build on something like that tbh.

The thing is the more instanced content you add, the more players get removed from the open world map and makes it emptier and less alive.
I think they need to build on the open world model and add more depth with the tools they already have in place.

Thats kinda sad you feel forced. Is it really that big a deal? I agree with your comment about instanced content, but the thing is, there is barely any instanced content in this game, at least in the sense im talknig about. Yes yes there are dungeons and personal story. Some of these don’t even have to be instanced. I mentioned earlier an example where one can obtain town clothes by a short, fun activity in iron marches where you repair a bike. It was cool and I dont know if you would classify it as a quest or what, it certainly wasnt a DE. But whatever you call it, it was fun, and youd be surprised how those little sprinkles of content throughout zones make a difference. WP spoke about this perfectly in one of his vids.

Well as many of us have realised, gw2 did not really deliver an innovative experience at all, but only disguised it just enough so that we wouldn’t realize it till we bought it. To make it worst, the quality of the story greatly reduces as we deeper into the game…. Having said that, i’m still playing this game just because at least FOR NOW, they’re not forcing vertical progression on players yet and I don’t have to constantly be farming for new armor that I don’t need..

So pretty much, the day they put vertical progression (this includes level progression) in this game with some tier 2 ascended armor, is the day Anet has lost me as a customer completely.

Anet is certainly innovative in some ways. Their DE system is, their living story is. The combat is in my opinion, the best ive seen in an mmo. Its incredibly intuitive, and I think I could give a lvl 80 to my friend whose never played gw2 but other mmo’s, and he’d pick it up within 15 minutes. Its also fast-paced and less technical than other mmo’s. Plus the visuals.

I agree some parts of the game has let me down in regards to the promises within the manifesto.

Although i still hope on the premise of potential. Quite frankly DE’s are the best type of questing/levelling content iv ever player in a MMO currently.
This in itself is a massive achievement. HOWEVER let me make it clear I dont condone marketing hype unless one day, we get a full map of meta chains that are effected by player controlled variables rather than timers, warring factions that are literally battling for control and boss events that create massive implications for the whole map.

I mean, it is what you once promised anet!?!?

This all comes down to what you want out of lvling/questing/etc. If you want something personal, dynamic events don’t do that so well. They interactive, spontaneous, and occasionally fast-paced. Meta-Events are great and something that can certainly be expanded upon. A while back Anet added some new DE’s to zones throughout the world, only a few though. This was wayyyyyy back in october, november? I cant remember, 1 of them. But you could tell they were trying to initiate an evolution in the world. Thats one way they can do it outside of the living story. Perhaps for the living story, there could be one main theme occuring, say the big chapter after southsun cove. But while that is going on, there are smaller, medium sized living stories occuring. Perhaps 2 other zones. I actually could see Anet doing this. Multiple Living stories. Its just a matter of whether or not they have the manpower.

Ye ive also discussed something similar like this with people. It just feels like a very weird perspective when I learn about all this lore outside the game. Its unnecessary and spoilerish. They need to be creative and implement these tales inside the game. Especially braham and rox’s story, it was so ruined by turning it into a blog post. If they want to delve more in depth about lore, do it through a book, not a blog post. Otherwise save it for npc dialogue or other lore-expressing means.

For some of the stuff in the trailer yes. I mean they made it sound like everything from gw1 would be in here. Obv a lot of stuff isn’t, but its understandable and is expected all in due time. Even though Anet may mean everything in Manifesto a different way, watching the trailer and playing the games makes it appear as a lie. The trailer is to blame for a lot. Either way DE’s undeniably need to be balanced with more personal instance, or small quest(Riff Sootclaw) like content. I don’t expect it all now though. These are just suggestions, very strong suggestions.

we don’t need quests, we need questitems that spawn events from an eventchain.

example: you escort a traveler through queensdale. Once you’re there the npc asks you to visit his mother at home, to see if everything is allright. He gives you the key to his mothers house. — you go to the house whenever you like — Once there (+the key in your inventory) the key spawns a new event where everyone around can participate. The door breaks open and the mother runs out of the house. Behind her a few thieves. Kill the thieves before they kill the woman. If they kill her, the event failed. If she survives the attack the woman gives you a letter for her son. — visit the son again — if he is there + you have his letter, he reads the letter. There’s money in it to open a shop. He now has become a vendor and sells unique items.

That sounds fun, but it also sounds like a 1 time only thing. There is an event in gendarran fields where u escort this guy, at the end a vendor pops up, gives you some ice weapon. It makes sense for that event to be repeatable, because of how often the specific npc must scout the area. I like yur idea tho. How bout I give you an example of what this game needs more of.

Rift Sootclaw, Lamprey Grottoes, Iron Marches. You find this warclan in a hole like environment with a bunch of charr tanks. You fix his tank for him. There are like 5 operations you must complete to fix it. By operation I mean “change tire, release crankshaft, check engine”. 5 stages of dialogue with options you must complete. You finish it, and hes like hey welcome to the warband and gives you a bandana. Thats cool and its practically the only one of its kind ive seen in game. But why? Its so random because of how lonely its content type is. There needs to be more.

SkylightMoon.1980

So perhaps im being misleading by saying quest chain or what not, because the interpretation of what “quest chains” really mean completely depend on the other MMO’s youve played. A better way express this is to say we need more personal story like content. The only thing we’ve had thats even remotely close to personal story like content, since release, were the 2 f&f missions. I saw a lot of potential in those missions, because I felt hmm perhaps I can really gain an in depth understanding of F&F and rox and braham. Sadly each mission only served as an intro to the characters, and they were the only missions for rox and braham we got.

However this may lead us to another idea Anet is working on. That is the content promised by treasure hunts. Right now, we only know their purpose is to serve an alternative to obtaining a precursor. I don’t exactly know how it would work either. However! I think it would be suitable to design the treasure hunts so that they are specifically unique to lore of the weapon you are obtaining. I don’t know if it will include personal story like instances, or just have us farming the world again in search of supplies to craft these elusive weapons. I think what would be very terrible is if Anet just has us crafting the weapons, and farming for the crafting materials.

Anyway, in the future what would be nice is if we have more treasure hunts, but for vanity items. There is something sort of like that now, and its at the end of some dynamic events there is a vendor that appears. They should have more of this. A lot more. Except with more difficult content. Dynamic events can only be so difficult which is why they may need to use a different flavor of content. Thats why I suggest mission chains that are lore intrinsic and reward a relevant vanity item at the end.

Renamed quests which you don’t have to take.

The fact that you dont have to take them or activate them is good though. Dynamic events are a lot more than just renamed quests. They give each zone a feeling of continuous action. Games that just have quests usually don’t have lively zones at all. The world feels stagnant. Dynamic events and meta events make everything feel animated. Why am I defending dynamic events though? Guild wars has practically the opposite problem with the mission system. All gw2 wants to do is living story, living world. Which is great but that just means it lacking in quest chains. Quests that are like “Go kill 5 of these mobs” are not what im talking about. Quest chains that are "1. Go fetch farmer joe from his house he hasnt paid taxes in a month, 2. Farmer joe is gone, investigate the village, 3. A local said a specific gang came to farmer joes house in the middle of the night, 4. Go to local gangs hide out and interrogate them, 5.(let yur imagination run wild with what farmer joe had to do with this stupid local gang, bandits, whatever.)

Spyder, I think you misunderstand the satisfaction of quest chains, they arnt for everyone. No its not a single player game, there is plenty of instance content in this game. Personal story and f&f missions were. I liked f&f missions i just wish there were more of them. Im certainly not suggesting the whole game be quest chains. DE’s are great, and satisfy a certain hunger the player needs. Because they are repeatable and bring liveliness to the zone. Quest chains help tell a story, in an epic one time way that DE’s cant. They also make sense for certain types of plots as well. I think its also a good way to introduce vanity items.

No it wouldnt. Because quests/missions whatever, would be instanced, and one-time only for your char. The difference between quest lines and DE’s are that quests are not repeatable, they are one time only, and meant to tell a story. There could be some detailed quest-line telling the story of this child murdering vilnia shadowsong.

So I just encountered a dynamic event, where im supposed to kill this raven shaman, vilnia shadowsong. Anyway before you go in some npc is like “oh she slays children we’ve been hunting her down for weeks.” I go in the cave, she has a sidekick, i zerk on them and win. The fight was kinda fun but then I realized this was totally inappropriate for a DE. It should have been a mission chain. Something that takes more investigation. I feel like I just waltz into the middle of some epic story and took 60 seconds to slay a boss. Everything about it felt quite superficial, nothing personal. This is what wooden potatoes was talking about, the game is hollow. Plus I couldnt help but laugh because I remembered the Manifesto Trailer. Ree Soesbee, game designer, say in the manifesto trailer “everybody around you is doing the same thing you’re doing, the boss you just killed respawns 10 minutes later, it doesn’t care that im there.”

Wow Ree, you guys really fixed the problem in gw2. Vilnia, a boss that has promising roots behind it, doesnt respawn 10 minutes later, it respawns 20 minutes later!!! A whole 10 minute difference. Anyway this is exactly where DE’s make no sense. The nature of DE’s should be events that make sense to periodically happen. Like a village sacked by svanir, or a dragon champion attack. Not me killing a boss, and seeing it respawn 10 minutes later. This is why you need quests, missions, call it whatever you want.

The zone still needs at least 1 meta event chain. Perhaps one can be added after this chapter of the living story? Because I already suspect that events like “The Instigator” and “Settlement Integrity” will go after the living story ends. Those are two of the biggest events there as well, because of their drops. Besides those two, most of the zone is dry in terms of DE’s. There are no heart tasks either, which is disappointing. Hopefully in the future when Anet introduces new zones, they are more animated and developed.

So in this post I may be speaking prematurely, as its only been a day since the patch hit. However I suspect that for this half of SoS, this is all the content we’ll see. Which makes me wonder why. Don’t get me wrong I love all the content. But in terms of telling a story, maybe its a little too soon. The refugees just got there, and in one days time, a multitude of structures have been erected and conflict has already commenced. It just doesnt seem appropriate for how you would tell a story. It would make sense to see a riot after maybe 3 days, while over those 3 days the buildings we see now are erected. However I think it would have been appropriate to see the carnivorous, enraged wildlife quarrel with the settlers immediately. No?

There are problems though to this idea. Even though its more appropriate from a story-telling perspective, I think many players would be unsatisfied. I can only imagine the forum posts about lack of content. This fully loaded shot of content hurled at us on day one is exactly what happened in March. It was great, but it didnt last for more than 4 or 5 days.

What do you guys think? Either way I think you could make a criticism so maybe its just me being a little too picky.

This post is prolly gonna be merged but on yur cons section, id have to disagree with the instanced content criticism. I might hold off on it until the 28th when we probably see some come in. Thats 2 weeks from now. So in the mean time enjoy the crab toss lol. I could agree with the RNG criticism, and I would have liked to see some meta events. Hopefully at some point in a living story, Anet will include some.

I criticised the lack of instanced content purely because there is NONE at all. I would have liked an additional small instance OR even a cut scene to showcase new characters and their personalities. I too, think that the majority of living story content definitely should be open world based.

Will edit my original post.

There wasnt any in the beginning of F&F and that was 4 months long. SoS is only a month long and I wouldnt expect it in the beginning anyway. Mainly because the timing seems inappropriate. I mean its not a long event, putting an instance in immediately seems too rushed. Def expect one at the end though. Im convinced that it will be in Canachs lair. Currently im scouting the island trying to gather as much info as I can. I havent found a shred of evidence though that suggest where Canach is on the island, if he is even there.

True enough, the F+F story was alot longer.
Although i disagree on the timing, and the fact that the event is only a month long meant I assumed something a little more substantial to the story very early on. Now im not suggesting a grouped instance like molten facility dungeon, i cannot see how it would hurt the timing to have a cutscene or two with the new characters, or a small instance in which you have to save a bunch of refugees or consortium members or something, apart from making the event feel completely differently paced than F+F (something which players complained about massively).

Canachs lair seems obvious. Have already put a rage thread up (without too much rage) about them revealing future achievements and the fact its ruined the story for me. Considering theres achievements that specifically named the bosses I think its a given… Although it could be meta chains and respective bosses to each. Maybe a dungeon for canach and a meta chain for subdirector noll… One can only hope to be surprised at this point.

Ye thats true. I agree with the achievement point tho. It only took about 3 minutes into the update to figure out whats gonna happen in the end, or at least enough to spoil it for us. I don’t know why they cant fix that. The living story is already spoiled enough when they preview updates like 2-3 weeks before they hit like they did with F&F. The devs release too much info. So much so I feel like im from the devs POV. Its certainly something they need to change in the near future. I dont know whether or not its gonna be instanced though. Id guess so to be honest. But maybe they will pull out one time events again if they think the engine is ready who knows.

I only have 4 pieces so far, the new backpiece is the only addition this patch :/ At least give me a facemask to wear xD and maybe some legs? I can do without a chestpiece. This is what I got so far.

Today while ive played ive tried to keep an eye out for hints about the living story. Hopefully we can get this thread bigger to draw more attention, gather more opinions. I think Canach is the villain behind F&F as well. Its pretty certain that he is the villain for southsun, after consulting the achievements list. We see the need to subdue Canach, Subdirector Noll, some golem, and an ancient Karka. Canach is also a sylvari which raised my suspicions even more as to whether or not he was behind F&F. Is he with the nightmare court? Also, back in F&F, one of the Molten Alliance prisoners said a silver-tongued, SNAKE-NOSED, figured betrayed them. Or at least the figure was the instigator of all of this. I dont know if snake-nosed is an expression, but if its to be taken literally then that fits a sylvari perfectly. The question is what is the connection with southsun? Did Canach rain all hell down upon the shiverpeaks and diessa just to get some folk down to southsun? For some sort of sacrifice? Does this have to do with bubbles the deep sea dragon? I did suspect it might after viewing the sclerite weapon skins and back piece, they look very Cthulu like. Perhaps some ritual needs to take place, I dont know. Anyway let the speculation begin!!!

This just ties back to the problem of temp content. I suspect if this is anets mentality about a lot of game additions. Not just activities. Are they trying to implement everything through the living story? If so thats a problem, because thats a lot of content that will be halted.

PRO: pretty much everything added
CON: Having to do the hardest JP in the game for one part of the new stuff, and the fact that enemies here STILL hit like a truck (let’s face it, they’re dungeon mobs at this point). Oh, here’s an extra con…no swim trunks or swimwear for players to buy.

it is a jp but you didnt have to do it. if yur talkin about the stepping stones one for the sample then ye you didnt needa do it. cuz there are 11 samples i think. you only need 10.

I just wasted $200 on these chests….Am really tired of this now. I had to buy over 100 BL keys just to get ONE bloody fused weapon ticket, now $200 (over 1.8k in South African rands which is my currency….) later and all I have to show for it is a bunch of Karka shells and Passion Flowers….

Please Anet, I have just payed for your server costs for a month and gotten next to nothing for it. Your RNG is flawed in so many ways. I have had probably 5 or 6 exotic DROPS since launch, and now after over 100 of these supply crates I haven’t gotten anything remotely useful.

Between that and the lack of Necromancer fixes, my interest in this game is starting to turn into annoyance, which is a pity, because I do actually like the game.

There’s nothing I can do now after already spending the money which is more than a bit frustrating, but what can I do…

lol kitten dude thats a waste of money you shouldnt spend so much on a game. i spend 200 dollars on the game maybe a month. not a day thats insane.

Temporary Content

SkylightMoon.1980

Ive been commenting on this for the longest time. The game has too much temporary content and not enough permanent content. The game has been out for nearly 10 months!! And I think we can all agree there is plenty more temp content than permanent. Permanent and repeatable that is. This is why 10 months later it feels like there is still little to do sometimes. Its because there is very little permanent content accumulation. There needs to be a better balance of temp and permanent.

So im reading through the zam interview with anet, about the new patch, the first part is with southsun cove. Reading one specific part made me quite upset, ill quote.

Are other activities that had been announced such as Bar Brawl and Target Range in Divinity’s Reach being pushed back to be released with more closely themed Living Story content?

Scott McGough: We haven’t identified a Living World release for those two in particular, but we love activities around here, so if we don’t release these eventually it’ll be because other activities were a better fit.

Ok so why can’t they release activities like Bar Brawl or Target Range because they are fun. They don’t need to be relevant to a current or potential living story. I bet Anet already has most of that activity content completed as well. They should just put it in the game like keg brawl is already there and make it permanent, add some achievements for it, and maybe some rewards and that would be great. I think the playerbase wants more activities, and doesnt really care as much about how they are implemented with respect to the living story. Its also silly because they imply it could be temporary like crab toss. STOP with the temporary content. I like it but I wish a lot of it was permanent. It surprises me that the living story team would even have something to do with those two activities.

Pretty disappointed with all the crap. Crab toss is bullkitten and they even made the mistake to make an achievement with title so we are forced to play it.

Also too many other achievements…

Such a fail. Might be the first time I’m just ignoring all that stuff and doing other things… don’t want to stay the whole next weeks on that map to do all that stuff.

Flame and Frost was better where it only were a few things to do every months.

lol some of the gw2 community will never be pleased. thts ok we are havin a lot of fun. i acc think this is better than f&f so far. you dont acc have to do crab toss at all. i got sclerite backpiece without it. plenty of achievements to do. i guess you could say youre forced to do somethin for a reward but thats like every video game out there.

Ok so ive been grindin it out since the patch hit. This is what I got.
Pros:
-Lots to do, lots of achievements and tasks.
-The zone looks a lot nicer, I mean I like the new buildings and what not. New POI’s are cool as well.
-There is lots of info so far I have learned from the npc’s, good job again anet.
-The weapon skins are amazing!! So are the back skins, again, good job anet.
-The crab toss mini game is fun, I like it a lot even though I got killed a ton.
-More events! Finally, the zone has been dry for months. Killing a refugee feels somewhat sadistic after saving them but oh well its still fun.
-Mobs are weaker, thats cool, finally.
Cons:
-TEMP CONTENT!!! I know a lot of this will go away soon. Crab toss, I dont want it to go. Why cant you guys add more content like this?
-RNG. Not much to be said. I bought 30 of the boxes and got a weapon ticket along with some shoulder skins. Its fun, im willing to buy, but not everyone is, and I feel bad for them. I hope there is another way to obtain the awesome weapon skins.

So ye not too many cons besides RNG and the forboding temp content but those two are big. Anyway have fun out there guys its pretty cool!!! Thanx anet!!!

Stop adding TEMPORARY content

I kinda have to agree though. Anet has added a lot of great content since launch but a lot of it has been temp. Mad king clocktower, wintersday jp, mad king and tixx mini dungeons, MF and SAB. MF and SAB should have been permanent. Maybe in the future, hopefully soon. MF should have been given explore paths and dungeon armor. When SAB returns with world 2 it should be permanent. The living story is great but it will not suffice for all of the necessary content in GW2. We need more permanent content. A study background which is permanent additions to the game, while the temp content(living story) provides an evolving type of atmosphere.
