Hello there!
Pony Pony Run Run coming right back at you! Tired of being called cheeser for running ONE point in SA? Of being called noob for having more than one dodge? Well let’s give all those haters a true reason to despise your existence beyond imagination.
This is all about becoming Cheese Gods using the most cheesiest of the cheesiest moves and gear we can actually get.
Let’s take a look at the build first:
Gear:
- Dire for extreme cheese.
Runes:
- Perplexity for 3xtr3m3 ch33s3
Traits:
Deadly arts: 10
- Mug: It’s not that cheesy but best in slot i’d say
Shadow arts: 30 (Again you want all the cheese posible)
- Shadow’s embrace for OP cond removal
- Infusion of shadow cus we need a lot of initiative to turn into cheese
And the God-cheese tier trait Shadow rejuvenation for insta full heal when stealthed.
Trickery: 30
- Long Reach for surprise buttcheese
- Bountifull thief because stability denial is a-we-some
- And for the last trait we take the god cheese trait incoming 15 april… Bewildering Ambush. Some of you may say >But pony we already have Sleigh of Hand and perplexity runes no need for Bewildering Ambukitteno that i say THAT’S NOT NEARLY ENOUGH CHEESE, WE NEED BOTH.
How does this even work you may ask? We’ll let me enlighten you with cheese wisdom.
You start D/P spam Headshot like a bauss then when the interrupt proc switch to P/D steal+ cnd, pop your basilisk Venom and spam 1 like the cheese god you are. The opponent should have 13 stacks of confusion and Three hundred million other condition now you just have to approach their confused corpse and laugh. They will be so kitten they will report you, most likely but i say #worth.
So that’s all for today!
P.S: Don’t ever play this please.
(edited by Sons.5493)
It’s such a poor design that we have to rely on Runesets to be able to counter the condition meta but if we use the SA line we are called cheesers and kittening noobs.
You know what? kitten it i’m going perplexity P/D for the sake of kittening ppl off
Let me teach you how to roam with 4 easy steps!
1. Get a full D/D berserker thief and run 30/30/0/0/10 or 25/30/0/0/15
2. Proceed to one shot the kitten out of everything
3. If you fail and get rekt blame anet for bad balance
4. Proceed to shout bullkitten as the enemy finishes you (if conditions in point 3 are met)
In all seriousness, just get 0/30/30/10/0 D/P or 10/30/0/0/30 S/P and cheese your way to victory.
Seems like a cool build with lots of potential, i might use a variation of it in my graids, i’ve fought guild that have certain people to spam aoe blinds (in gvg) and it get be pretty scary.. this would be great for reviving your eles too.
Glad you like it! Yeah blinds can be scary sometimes, while sometimes it may make an autoattack miss sometimes you can blind a earthshaker, a miss is a miss!
And yeah the idea behind this is to revive those ranged backlaners that get focused by the enemy strike team!
So this is what it all boils down to? Thief being a nurse?
Q.Q
Absolutly not! Imo this is just another build that will come up, D/P S/P or S/D and D/D will still be a viable pick!
This is an interesting build, but it wouldn’t be really viable in larger scale skirmishes. I mainly play a Thief in one of the major WvW guilds on BG, and the problem I see with your concept is that we really don’t stop to rez people, and there are a couple reasons. First, Warrior and even Ranger elites are much better for rez’ing if you get a few people downed. Also, an even better way to get people up is to kill an enemy so they rally.
I think I’m kind of in the same boat as you, though. Thief is a great scout, maybe the best, but I haven’t been able to find a really great use for it as part of a zerg. I tried toying around with venomshare builds, and found them pretty underwhelming. Glassy builds are just too fragile and I get downed too easily.
That said, I’ll probably give your build a try anyway. It looks like it would be very effective in small skirmishes, but I do have my doubts how well it will work in ZvZ play.
I completly agree that it wouldn’t really be viable in ZvZ since most of ZvZ are unorganized fights (in the sense that a lot of kitten is going down), i created the build with my mind set on gvg and small fights where you are able focus on the job.
I know how melee trains work, no one stops to ress but you wouldn’t find yourself on the melee train as that would reduce you fight awareness. Imo this should be played as a battlefield roamer, taking advantage of the enemy position for blinds/debuffs and awareness of damage spikes or downed allies/enemies.
About Ranger/warriors being better, let’s say Warriors and rangers ressing potential starts at 100 while Nurse thief starts at 75, once rangers/wars have used the elite they are reduced to 0 while thieves will still be at 75, but you do have a fair point as do i, i belive. And yes you can kill other enemies but it’s not always there will be a downed enemy in gvg or small roaming. Ressing or asuring the stomp will be your job and key to victory i believe!
Gear:
Answer is easy, Sentinels! You want to be as tanky as posible your goal is not to deal damage but to ress and blind. I pick sentinels over cleric as i feel the lack of vitality is bad on our squishy thieves. Feel free to try other stats tho.
Runes:
- Rune of Mercy 6/6: Now this is just the cherry over the cake, +150 toughness, take less damage while revivng (over the 50% from resilence), revive allies with 20% more health and revive allies 10% faster. Everything is self explanatory here.
Skills:
Heal: Withdraw
You really don’t want to be rooted. This heal combined with Vigorous recovery will let you dodge a lot more and escape some scenearios where you’d have been caught up!
Utilities:
- Shadow Refuge: I don’t think i need to explain it but just in case: Mass aoe stealth for an extremly long duration which can be blasted for Aoe Blind? Good for stealthing incoming damage to you blob and so on.
- Smoke screen: While underused i feel like this really suits well here, it’s a blinding field so any enemies that go through will be blinded and it can be blasted for aoe stealth! It also blocks projectiles. I feel like this skill has a lot of room to make some severe plays!
- Blinding powder: Easy reliable stealth and blind. It will let you ress, blind and escape if you ever get stunned as it will proc Resilience of shadows which will make you a god.
Elite:
I’m really unsure on what to pick here, i went for Dagger storm as the stability is really nice and it can cripple a whole blob, we definetly lack some stealthy Elites!
Now let’s list all the combos you can do with this Build in order to Aid you allies.
Blast + SR = AoE blind and spammable. If you break stealth as soon as you drop the refuge it will re-stealth you in the last pulse doing another aoe blind and giving extra regen (if you do not have it for any reason)
Blast + Smoke screen = Mass stealth which equals regeneration and damage mitigation! Keep that in mind!
Blast + Black Powder = Same as smoke screen
Black Pownder + Heart seeker = Individual stealth which will let you move arround being unoticed and help you stomp enemies.
Blast+ Poison field = AoE Weakness which is a great damage mitigator.
Conclusion:
Strong build overall, with a diferent style and a lot of gameplay to be developed on, i feel like the skillcap on this will be quite high as you need to combo a lot and have ally and enemy awareness in order to achive your goal and be useful to your team. Stealthing, blinding, weakning it all comes down to being able to read the enemy movements and comunicating with your allies. Keep in mind that pugs will normally autoattack out of stealth so the build will perfom better with teams where they know of your existence and can comunicate with eachother with ease.
Eventhough this is theorycrafting I do really see this build working as dmg thieves can be niche picks in WvW.
That is pretty much all, any feedback will be taken in consideration and i would love get some opinions of what the thief community thinks!
inb4 i didn’t pick a thief to be a kittening support
Also excuse my englando for it is not my native language and i’m too lazy to spellcheck

Hey ya’ll!
I’m Pony Pony Run Run and today i’m bringing to you the realest Thief Support build you’ve ever seen.
First let’s explain a litle who i am and all that jazz. I’m Pony Pony Run Run from Far Shiverpeaks (EU). Been playing the game since the beta and rolling thief since that (took like 4 months break) i have 2134 hours on my thief, for some it may not be much but i find it enough to know what i am doing.
So let’s start with the build:
First of all i want to specify in what roles and game modes this build will be most efficient as it is, these will be the following:
- WvW : _Will work at its best in small skirmishes, small guild raids (20pers) and GvG where ressing and preventing a stomp is high priority.
- sPvP : It can work but you are definetly wasting one spot in the team as this build is based arround stealthing allies and we all know stealth doesn’t work well with the node capture mode. On the other hand if Anet were to keep going with the ongoing TDM i could totally see this a viable pick.
- PvE : C’mon let’s be real, no need for supports in PVE. Don’t waste your time using it there because your damage is completly null.
Okay so, here goes nothing:
Before going into details let’s explain the role that this build will be filling.
Your main goal is too keep allies alive when they are downed, blind hazard the battlefield, prevent stomps and mitigate incoming damage to your main damage dealers. Now let’s explain the “why” after every choice!
Weapon Choices:
Dagger/pistol: Stealth on demand, blind fields, Insta daze and god tier gap closers. That is all you want with this build. Knowing what you can do with this set is primordial to succeed with this build
Sigils: Energy and Hydromancy, with the new sigil changes this will allow you to get extra dodges and cripple the enemies at the same time.
Shortbow: You need to move arround fast to you allies to ress the asap so IA gets the job done. Poison field blast will apply weakeness which is an excelent damage mitigator. Blast finisher on demand has to be the best part of this, i’ll list later what you can achive with both this sets in synerygy. Use same sigils.
Traits:
Now here’s the real deal, I’ve been trying to force the new traits into some builds and it just didn’t feel right untill i stopped and looked at the thief from another whole prespective other than damage dealer. Let’s get going!
Shadow Arts: 30 points
- Shadow protector: This is amazing, it will help you ressing downed allies and will provide some pasive sustain to your allies when you stealth them.
- Cloaked in shadows: Not much to say, with the stealth abuse you’ll be doing an AoE blind is the best thing you can get.
- Resilience of Shadows: This right here is the star of our build, 50% damage reduction is a lot of damage reduction. It’ll allow you to stealth downed(or not) allies and safely resurrect them.
Acrobatics: 20 points.
- Vigrous recovery: Combined with withdraw it’s an awesome choice which will let you dodge a lot more combined with the sigils of energy.
- Quick Recovery: I feel like this build will be pretty ini hungry so why not, consider taking Pain response if you want some Condition cleanse. Either of them are fine.
It might be worth going deep to 30 points and getting the stability on reveal, i don’t know 1sec feels really underwhelming.
Trickery: 20 points.
- Mercifull Ambush: Now did i say Resilience was the star? This is the other star! Will give stealth to your downed ally which means he will have 50% dmg reduction AND 2k hp regen! plus it will blind enemies arround! Definetly a must have for this build!
- Bountifull thief: Steal buffs and share them with allies? and vigor? YES.
On the minor traits we have some extra initiative which is always nice in my opinion.

Can we get a similar skillset on a rifle? Pretty please? Puppy eyes
So you rerolled to the most pointless role-less class of all the game. Good Job!
(edited by Sons.5493)
Some of this traits would be so freaking OP and broken, 15% more damage on dual skills? With the buff we got in PW i’m already one PWing glassy targets.
There are a few that would be great and some that would be broken as kitten!
I main thief (1700 hours on it) and even if i know some buffs are needed, those are way over the top!
People tend to have the problem of slef proclaiming stuff in general, speak for yourself mate. Personally i’m really intrigued and really want them to develop scarlet’s plan untill the end.
PW feels so good after the patch, way better than before!
Been trying it in some spvp matches and i came up with a build which seems to have some real potential!
Good job Anet on that change (atleast they got 1 right)
Do you remember when thiefs were considered top tier in escape/chase escenarios?
THANKS
Do you remember when thiefs were considered top tier in escape/chase escenarios?
Warriors.
I would love offhand sword, but your skills are far from desirable, most of thema re poor designed and condition based which imo OH sword shouldn’t be based off.
IMO OH sword should be based arround blocks (as some of the Gw1 assasins build were based off)
I’d love the sword sword combo to have a #3 skill similar to our Spear underwater, Block next attack, upon succsefull parry you rampage at your target.
I cba to put some more thoughts on other skills, i just hope Anet does a good job.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a necro use marks strategically.
This so much
‘Thieves’ do not lack for condition removal. It’s only non-stealth thieves. Most classes have to spec a certain way if they want heavy, frequent condi-clears, and thieves are no different.
As others have said, this is more an issue with the current condi-heavy meta than it is with our class.
Read carefully:
>Forced to invest into SA
To be honest, if you’re playing S/D and you think that it’s difficult for you to condi cleanse, then you’re just playing sword wrong and you’re probably little more than a bad player. Evasion and Shadow Return are practically the only two tools that I use to condi cleanse/counter (in WvW, mind you, since I have so little money; in sPvP I also use Lyssa Runes), and I do it with ruthless efficiency.
Well, it’s not that i’m the best but i ain’t the worst (Rank 232 in EU), but that’s not the point. Shadow Return is not Efective in terms of combat to be used as condition removal, by the simpel fact a dhuumfire necro will just apply 4-6 conditions in les that 6 seconds and after if u ever manage to remove them he’ll just reapply them but that also may be (as a lot of people stated) the current condi meta.
Anyway, seems like instead of buffing the thief cond removal (or in game cond removal in general for all classes that lacks it) we just have to wait for cond nerf?
When will you realise NO ONE takes you seriously Sanduskel. Please give up.
It’s getting ridicolous, there’s no way in hell we can somehow remove that much conditions with our current remove condition set. I run S/D with signet of agility and runes of lyssa and that’s pretty much as close as how much cond removal we have (if not traited into SA) and it’s very poor tbh.
Signet of spite itself will just stack 4-5 (can’t recall) different conditions on us which we either are spec’d into SA or we have to remove 1 by1, yes 1 by 1. Spending ALL of our initiative and 1 utility just to counter that, and by the time we did that we are already dead because that necro/warrior/mesmer/DP thief is literally applying new conditions every second which we have to eat through.
Suggestions:
Signet of Agility removes ALL conditions on you.
Fleet of Foot: Moved to Grandmaster tier and removes 1 condition on dodge (hard to catch moves to master since it’s a poorly designed trait)
Shadow return: With the next update nerfing the hell out of this would be nice if it could remove TWO conditions instead of 1.
TLDR: Our condition removal is pathetic and so is our sustain and this need some HUGE Buffs.
Nowhere is stated that sylvari uses plant armor by definition. You have TA, and three culturals.
>No doubt this has been raised before
You can do better than that.
Scarlet directly implying that she has something to do with dragons is meaningless?
(considering her personality i wouldn’t take it just as a meaningless drivel as you say)
I play P/D cond and i never lost and never will to a guardian, some mesmers can be a challange if really skilled otherwise they are a piece of cake!
Thing i don’t even understand, your build doesn’t even make sense, you dont have crt dmg yet you use hidden killer, you go tanky when you clain that the thieves “disguise you, like mesmers” wouldn’t the point of that be go GC so you can actually kill something? Besides on the thieves it clearly says “(world) pet”, only a kitten could confuse the real one.
Besides of this, low damage build with only escape utilities, and heavily dependant on 3min cd elite (face it, you’d never win against a decent player with those stats, if you weren’t able to run away). So yeah, overall terrible pointless build and pretty bad build.
This build is terrible. Low damage and High cd, it’s like my Shadow trap p/p build, it’s fun but it’s not efficient in most scenarious.
Well, it was nice while it lasted! Guess i supposed too much!
Well as i said it’s just a “what if”
Yeah just checked it :P
What if the do not touch things are actually Galactic energy gatherers or something like that, we saw some in the mist (wvw) and Orr (zhaitan’s lair and magical rich location) Have they been spoted somewhere else?
You make fair points, but how did Tequatl get stronger? (Anet stated it was related to lore)!
I love Scarlet Briar and i can see her story becoming something much more relevant than what we all thing.
Hello fellow loremancers, long time reader first time posting my own theories!
So today at work this theory came to my mind thinking about what i experienced yesterday playing the new fractal, although i’m proud of what i came up with this theory of full of “what ifs” so just try to follow through and give your opinions at the end!
Also, this a Scarlet-hate-free thread.
So here goes nothing!
We know that the Jotun belived that when a new star is born and elder dragon is born too, at least i remember it that way.
What if in the birth of a star there’s Glactic and Chaos/dragon energy involved, in the fractal a sentinent being was created from the fusion of this two energies (if we think that the lines that cross the globe are made of galactic energy). What if when a star is born this happens in a MUCH bigger scale and a sentinent creature is formed in Tyria (thanks to the galactic lines arround the planet) with the ability to be permanent. The Anomaly in thaumanova was agresive at sight and so are the dragons (in general).
Scarlet knows this (based on her dialogue in the new fractal she shows some degree of knowledge about chaos/dragon energy and galactic energy what for her is a breaktrough).
Now let’s talk about the hybrid, biologically created creature with sentinent abilities capable of evolving, interesting. The toxic nightmare court standing at the end of the Nightmares within finall stance says something like this when the creature evolves: Look at what’ve done, we finally made it which heavily implies that they have been trying for a while but what’s the real propouse of this creature?
Now we look at Tequatl’s unexplained new gained powers, how? Zhaitan is supposedly dead and there’s now way he would become stronger with zhaitan dead but what if scarlet managed to create some “energy” similar to the one found when a star is born and she managed to infuse Tequatl with it.
Back to the Molten alliance, in the facilities there were a large number of slaves mining Azurite and i recall some Mysterious ore too, what if that is needed to catalyze the energies and make them stable.
About the ToN, what if that is just an experiment to test corruption(at some degree)?
Where i’m going with all this is, what if Scarlet’s master plan is to create her own “Elder dragon”, if we link the hybrid with the galactic energy and the ToN and the fact that Scarlet has knowledge about the ley-lines all this sounds somehow logical, but what would be the propouse? Show that she is above the Nightmare and the dream? Show that one can take her own decisions?
Alot going in my mind and i’m sure i missed something but that’s pretty much a general idea!
Thoughts?
Tho i don’t think the order would have the technology to identify that kind of energy, considering not even scarlet knew it before the thaumanova explosion.
I’m also concerned by the fact that the Anomaly boss uses galactic energy and has 6 eyes (like a margonite)
Omg, gonna check it now, i’m really intersted in what’s going on!
I actually love scarlet, i’m trully curious about what all of this will lead too, now we know that she was present in the world waaay before the molten alliance and with he talking about dragon energies i can say this will lead to a grand finalle related to actual dragon lore, which imo will be cool! Also the eternal alchemy fascinates me and i kinda wanna know how it ends. Just don’t overextended it much from this points.
Spoilers
Also, Dessa is related to the inquest? didn’t know that, and what questions does Ellen has to ask her, and what about the letter we got from Rox?
And to finalise what the hell was that thing at the end of the fractal, 6 eyes, 1 core and cosmic energy?
Are you even sure zhaitan is dead?
He means the visual effect you get one you kill foes with an elemented weapon, FDG brusn enemies when you kill them and so does some other weapons
Tbh, i’ll never ever quit my thief, i’ve come to far in this class, “mastered” so many aspects of it i just can’t handle playing another class.
I actually look forward to 10th, my build is pretty much untouched and only buffed and it will definetly make all the LOL i play thief cus perma stealth OP re roll, and im ok with this.
So, one thing that always bothered is the way build works in this setup, i use a cond build for wvw roaming and a Power build in Pve and i just hate how i have to go to the trainer every single time, it’s not about the gold, it’s about the time!
My suggestion is, make a Build book you can buy from the gem store where we can store our builds, write tips and such, and so we could change between the written builds as wanted, we had this in Gw1 and it was so smooth.
With this book we could share it with other people so they could read it and share our builds and thoughts with them (but not use the builds)
Opinions?
I hitted an engi for 17k today, kittening love thieves.
Bringing back assassins would eb awesome tbh, perhaps when they introduce a new weapon set?
Nope
1 5 c h a r s
D/D is the generic common weapon set for Thieves and this rune supports that set.
Specialized Thieves will not take this runes.
This doesn’t even make sense, try harder.
Yeah it does. This is best for condition builds (mainly d/d conditions +backstab) that also rely on on-crit effects. Otherwise you are wasting half of the set. And backstab is weak in a condition set.
Troll harder.
This makes even less sense tbh, D/D cond builds are so initiative hungry you can’t even cnd, 4% crt rate WONT change anything in a cond build whenre there’s stuff like undead or nightmare out there which is way better in ANY kind of cond build.
This runes doesn’t make sense amd you make even less.
D/D is the generic common weapon set for Thieves and this rune supports that set.
Specialized Thieves will not take this runes.
This doesn’t even make sense, try harder.
This suggested rune is way better rune than Runes of the scholar.
No.
Well, not really since the 10% damage requires position. But well, gonna give a try to this runes anyway.
It would need to be 10% on #1 skill attacks from stealth, not 10% on just backstab.
It’s already like that, it’s 10% damage from behinf with any kind of attack
Ye but i dunno if it’s worth losing 1xx+ power and crtdmg plus situational % dmg
