Sorel.4870

I hope you guys realise how bad this is for Ranked.

It will force so many players to play classes that they aren’t familiar with at all causing matches to be absolutely awful.

ANet are actually unbelievable…

OR, maybe players will actually practice a bit in unranked, fearing to lose ranked games, and learn something useful out of playing a different profession. Then go to ranked with a rather good level.

In addition, I rarely lose games because my team mates are mechanically bad, or because my opponents are mechanically better than me. It’s usually either a problem of team composition, or of rotations. While the later can not really be addressed, the former can be significantly improved by swapping professions in the beginning of the game to counter comp. So if people start playing different professions, you could actually get better games. QED

At your level, every player is good enough on two or more professions already, so it shouldn’t really be a problem.

Nope, the reason those games get higher numbers is because they 1) know what they’re doing 2) care about their community and 3) have a much more efficient balance team structure and higher hiring standards.

You reap what you sow, it is that simple.

Have you ever read LoL forums? According to them, LoL devs don’t know what they are doing, don’t care about their community, and can’t balance.

So no, these games are successful because the game itself is appealing to more players/viewers. Don’t be the kind of forum warrior who tries to fit every fact into his personal ideology and requests.

5k viewers for a weekly tournament is a lot for a small population game like GW2. Maybe you should stop comparing it to LoL, DOTA or CS:GO, because the viewership numbers will never be that high. But its more than a lot of games which are considered competitive (like SSB Melee for example).

How to counter condi rev?

in PvP

Posted by: Sorel.4870

Sorel.4870

1) Don’t play a condi build
2) Bring enough condition removal

Lately, I have had a lot of success beating Mallyx/Shiro revenants on a marauder scrapper. These beasts are rather squishy, so if you use your elixirs wisely, you should win most duels.

It’s even easier in team fights: make sure your team has a player or two dedicated to AoE condi removal. If you soloq, then your victory is conditioned by your team composition anyway, so just do your best.

Elo system for solo pvp leagues

in PvP

Posted by: Sorel.4870

Sorel.4870

You can’t really use a Elo algorithm for solos in the sense it’s used for guild teams. Guild teams are considered a single entity, so you would have a perfect 1v1 ELO system in this new Guild League, just like in chess.

Solo players, on the contrary, are matched with different players every game, meaning your victory mostly depends on luck. Which means the Glicko 2 system used will only show your skill in a modest measure.

Chrono bunkering in berserker is far from balanced.

It’s balanced compared to the rest of the powercreep. It’s just annoying as hell. I would like to see the block on the shield go down to 2s, to give it a more situational use. Naturally, I would like a lot of other things toned down in pretty much every other profession (except warrior, and any thief nerf should be compensated with huge buffs elsewhere). Also, F5 should be 1 second baseline, then 1s per illusion, so that it costs more.

How do you deal with dardevil ?

in PvP

Posted by: Sorel.4870

Sorel.4870

On a power ranger, you can kite the thief (he does not have a lot of gap closers usually on staff, if he uses Bouncing Dodger), and your LB#2 is guaranteed to deal at least some damage, since it’s a channel. Practice with a friend to time your LB#4 in the end of their dodge. Your immobs (for example from the druid GM trait) can help, but usually they will be cleansed immediately.

Don’t listen to the loud mouthes: daredevils are hard to beat on a power ranger if you don’t yet have the needed reflexes. Good luck and see you in the Mists!

No Solo-Queue

in PvP

Posted by: Sorel.4870

Sorel.4870

New players are not supposed to know this, but there actually was a solo queue at a point in the history of the game. It was almost empty, therefore the match-making was terrible and even low tier players (like I was a year ago) got 15 minute queue times, to endup in a terrible one-sided stomp. Every decent player was forced to queue alone in teamq. Anet removed soloq to shorten queue times and to add a distinction between casual (unranked) and serious pvp (ranked).

Long story short, if the population does not increase drastically, soloq is not coming back. And frankly, it wouldn’t change much. How many times do you run into a full premade with all solos? I know almost noons on these forums has a high enough MMR for it to be problem, unless you only queue at 4am. You can see the team compositions by opening the in-game match recap at the end of the game.

This is what I run on my mesmer (swap Decoy for Portal in teamq, or Wall of Precog if you prefer). The reason it works in berzerker is that you have a lot of small heals with the Inspiration line (more profitable on a smaller health pool), and every condi cleanse you have is instacast, so if you’re reactive enough, you won’t die to condis. You also have a lot of active defenses.

Wow, thank you. Apart from necromancer (and brokenant, of course), what do you have? Slick Shoes sometimes bugs and allows you to CC the revenant, but to avoid wasting my Slick Shoes half the time I would have to use Throw Mine? Should I play Signet of Might on my warrior? Tornado on my ele? Spike Trap on my ranger?

Come on now…

If you feel obligated to counter every single build on every single class with whatever class/build you decide to run, I think you’ve run smack into the issue: your obligation to feel like everything should be able to fight everything.

I agree with you. In addition, they are other ways to counter revenants that just unblockable CC. Which is why I made fun of this comment: why present this overly specific method like a counter to revenant? More like: if you’re a necro, try to keep your warhorn #4/staff #5 for the shield.

I support this idea. Not only because it would be a meaningful progression after you reach rank 80 (even if it’s just for the specialization weapons), but also because mastery experience in its current state can only be obtained on four maps, which can give a sort of “grindy” feeling. So more sources of mastery xp could be a good thing.

Unlike Square-Enix and their FF XIV which on DX11 on max settings is smooth in crowded areas and works on PS4.

After 3 years Anet hasn’t yet settled down with MacOS problems, so going into Console hype would be pretty much like showing a middle finger to Apple owners.

100% Agree. I bought GW2 because of the Mac Client Beta release, and grew to love the game. Meanwhile, my client is still a ridiculous Cider wrap. Anet manifestly has no intention of exporting their game on other platforms.

There is no real unit of distance in this game, which is why it looks odd. For example, in pvp, we always refer to “1200-range skills”. They should have think about this in 2012, but now it might be too late to change every tooltip in the game!

In that case, if it is too much trouble for Anet to change every tooltip, perhaps Anet should just scrap the ‘Away’ idea within the tooltip of these new map markers since the feature seems a bit unecessary, especially given the fact we don’t know what form of measurement is being used.

Personally, if Anet does change what measurement is being used, I would say ‘Footstep(s)’ would be the best.

No way. I can Steal at 1200 range. I think it should be called “Asuran feet”, or something like that, given that 1200 range looks like ~15m, assuming a human’s size is between 1.5m and 2m.

edit: or “1200 palms”.

Bliss thief’s are not vaible,

Look go roll Cs/DA/Tr with s/d pick every burst/damage trait. Then go find a ranger.
On a pure glass build you will crit them for 600 damage, with 20 stacks of might (s.Trap, Signet, you will crit them for 1500-2000,) Now factor in the Healing, and regin, and passives on that ranger.

Do try again. but be warned i have over 3 year’s on my thief, i can assure you all you ain’t going to win this argument whatever delusional methods you fabricate are going to fall short.

You can’t always “win” an argument: sometimes people cling too desperately on their believes. One of us certainly does, and since we’re on the forums, I’m ready to bet the most dramatic is.

S/D is not viable (which is a shame), and dueling a ranger on that build is not always a good idea (although you have a good chance of winning providing your iReturn is out of LoS). But I stand by what I said: d/p thief is not only viable, but is one of the strongest builds as of now. We’ll see how it will perform in HoT, but for now, it’s meta.

Oh, and don’t be afraid of using your Shadow Step for a decap. You won’t fight anyway, and when the defender is running to you and your job is done, just use the Return and get back into the fight faster

I agree with OP there is 0 incentive to have even fights in pvp(unless you are a hard counter to someone such as condi necro vs condi engi) and that is a terrible shame. Entire game is basically work with team and engage other team in so fights are outnumbered in your favor, take a profession with high mobility/stealth so you can instantly blink and dash away any situation where you are outnumbered and go outnumber a fight somewhere else in your favor. Once you have killed one member of their team you constantly are dominating the match as it will 5v4 for 15 seconds, plenty of time to slay another player and put them out of the match for 15 seconds.

Well… You described Conquest accurately enough. Yes, outrotating or outnumbering the enemy is a huge component of the game mode, as well as being able to fight outnumbered for a dozen of seconds. Mobile professions are typically worse in on-point 1v1 situations, to compensate.

If you have trouble holding your outnumbered fights (which is normal), you should always try to regroup on your close point. Unfortunately, it’s hard to do in soloq, as soloq players tend to snowball like hell. Lucky for you, soloq players are also really bad at playing the three points, so typically, when you start to snowball, you can be sure one of your opponent will stay alone on your close point, ready to be killed and giving your team momentum back.

I see people saying to decap points and avoid 1v1 fights but a lot of the time I have trouble doing this. A lot of the time it seems like there are either people already on the side points or a lot of the time one or more people run into me on the way there. When I play other classes I can usually fight them and have a chance at winning, but when I’m thief it feels like I have to just run away because I lose fights every time. I don’t really understand what I should be doing to avoid those kinds of situations

Well, sometimes, if your team is bad and people die before you can +1 them, you can’t be very useful. That being said, it’s often possible to get a sneaky decap on the far point several times a game. You can try to use your basi venom and shortbow, or SB#3, to slow down an opponent trying to get to the node you’re decapping. Also, don’t be afraid to use your Shadow Step to get a decap: you’re going to leave anyway after the decap, so you won’t need it.

edit: another tip: you can use Blinding Powder and immediately AA on shortbow to immobilize your opponent. You need to do it after a dodge though, because if you miss you will be stealthed and miss your decap.

First, don’t listen to every bad thief in the game trying to play the profession like it’s warrior. Never duel (unless it’s a shatter mesmer or some rare marauder build like fresh air ele), finish low targets in team fights, REZ (I can not stress this enough), or at least put a refuge or a blinding powder on your downed allies, interrupt stomps or banners with your Steal (the best interrupt in the game: insta-cast, 1200-range, and go through aegis and stab), decap far when you’re certain your team can hold the team fight without you for a minute.

Still, thief is by far the harder profession to play. Not mechanically (that’s easy as hell, compared to say engi or mesmer), but you have to be very aware of your positioning, of your role, and have good reflexes and a fast decision-making process.

Also, don’t forget that every player is different, and that not every player is able to play every profession. For example, everyone keeps saying that elementalist is easy to play, but I just can not be effective with it for some reason.

The “Cheesewars” you’re talking about is an extension of a tendency that’s been noted since the RTS games I played as a kid. Players from eastern cultures will tend to focus more heavily on mechanics while players from westernized cultures will tend to spend more time isolating a path of least resistance toward victory and attempting to milk it for all the wins its worth. Those of us who are from westernized cultures will often be very good at finding the quicker and easier ways to win and even unknowingly utilizing them at the expense of cultivating our own skills over the long term.

The developers’ mistakes in balancing the game have often made it easy for us to exploit their oversights but any cheesiness is also our responsibility for approaching the game without really defining our experience as much beyond just trying to win and win right now (regardless of how skilled or not we will become in the future). They haven’t made the game as balanced as it can be, but we also have had few qualms about using the “cheesy” builds. On the flip side, people from western cultures are also more prone to making excuses, and the cheesiness we complain about is sometimes just an excuse for getting outplayed, out-practiced, and out-dedicated.

I’m not sure I find the link. Cost or development time is certainly not why soloq is not in the game.

Moreover, do you realize that the pool prize is not in the pvp development budget? It is a marketing expense. I mean, sure, you’re already a customer, so why should you care about finding new players, right? Well, Anet does, that’s why they have a marketing budget. You really should have said “Anet should put more ads on twitch/YouTube instead of having that huge price”.

The marketing team seems to think a huge price pool tournament would bring new players to the competitive scene. While I’m not entirely sure I share their faith, it certainly is a strategy other games have had, and Anet’s mad men are old enough to do what they want with their money.

On a side note, I’m sure you should care more about marketing than you do. More players playing pvp = better match-making. We don’t need your soloq, we need a growing scene.

edit: I forgot to write that some of the prize might very well be paid by ESL.

Why should people have to switch off of thief? If I like thief I’m going to queue thief and I’m not going to swap. How many times have you told an ele to swap? Necro? Warrior? Engi? Chances are, you haven’t. This horse kitten about thief shouldn’t be able to 1v1 needs to end. Ele/Mesmer roams almost as fast as thief, but they can still fight. Using your logic, we should strip all of mesmer and eles mobility, since they are great fighters.

Well, maybe I’m not the best example, but I switch when:

1) I play a thief and there is another in the team
2) I play a shatter mesmer and there is another in the team
3) I play a marauder engineer and there is another in the team (rare)
3) I play a condition build and there are two necros in the opposite team
4) I play a marauder build and there are three others in my team
5) I play a shatter mesmer and there are two thieves in the opposite team
6) I play anything else than necro and there are two or more eles in the opposite team

Basically, most mobile roamers/team fighters don’t stack well. If you can, and you’re in ranked, it’s always a good idea to compliment your team composition.

edit : that being said, Drennon is not completely wrong. Ele has too much mobility for the 1v1 potential is has. Mesmer has not: let’s be serious, you either rely on stealth or kiting to win, which sucks in Conquest, and have no access to swiftness, no leaps, and Blink. I think we’ll face a similar problem with revenant, which performs extremely well in duel, but has better mobility than thief, given it has a target.

Don’t swap from thief. Ever. Every time your team loses due to double thief, smear it in your teammates face. Because “thief is fine” right?

Also, I think an even bigger problem is when other thieves defend the class and say it’s perfectly fine, L2P pls.

Thieves that actually believe their class is fine suffer from some kind of mental illness where they prove their superiority over others by ignoring obvious flaws.

It’s interesting most thieves that deny the class’ weakness queue with a higher tier premade. They have no consideration at all for the majority solo queue thieves

Yeah! You tell them! Everyone should play 1v1 builds, and just run to points and kill people!

I happen to have this “mental illness” you describe. While thief is my main, I play every profession but elementalist. You know why that’s fun? Because they all feel and play different. It’s a team game, and it’s balanced again different roles, and thief is not only “perfectly fine”, it’s by far the best in its role. So far, I must say, that it was ALWAYS in the meta. Now, the lack of different builds is boring, but thief is definitely not trash tier.

This thread underlines one of the biggest problem in MMO pvp: people get too attached to one profession. If you don’t like the role a thief is supposed to fill, or can’t play it, then don’t! Play ele, or engineer if you like to duel. And boys, even if you soloq like I do, play this game like it’s a team game!

I think you’re looking at it the wrong way. Thief is not “absolute trash” by any means. On the contrary, it has one of the strongest build in Conquest: d/p-SB. Allowing SB to be on F3 would be a straight-up buff to a build that already performs amazingly, which is not what the profession needs.

The problem with thief is that we’re stuck with this mobile role because of shortbow. Naturally, if thief was as mobile as it is now and won every duel, it would be simply OP. So what is there to hope?

I really, really hoped that staff would open up a new playstyle. For example, if staff was a low-damage support weapon, with a lot of active defenses, capable of stalemating 2 opponents on a point, and if Daredevil (who would have been called differently) offered some support and sustain. That way, to deal a minimum of damage, we would have had for example a Soldier staff-sw/dagger, less mobile, but capable of winning 1v1s. That’s not the direction Anet is going, so you can expect to stay glassy +1er and decappers for a while.
