Disappointed with dyes, not doing it again

I bought some of the last set of dyes – bought 2 sets of 5, and got one of the premium dyes. Not a mistake I’ll repeat.

I would LOVE to be able to buy the dyes from the gemstore. You know, instead of buying a lottery ticket.

Some of those enameled ones look really nice, but gambling at the gemstore’s odds are just too tilted.

There are actually good economic reasons for this. It’s complicated, but any time you put a “set price” on a Gem Store commodity (at least one that’s tradeable), that can have the effect of making that commodity a defacto “Alternate Currency”. It can also artificially limit the Gold->Gem and Gem->Gold conversion ratios.

I.E., say you put a certain color dye on the Gem Store for 500 Gems. All of a sudden, the “value” of that dye color is now directly linked to the current Gem->Gold and Gold->Gem rates, and the value of that dye color will rise & fall directly in proportion with those conversion rates. That could raise havoc with the Gem Exchange rates, and the economy in general.

Alternate Currencies can totally destroy an existing economy.. For instance, in the MMO game Asheron’s Call, the ingame gold/silver/copper currency system was completely destroyed (money was pretty much worthless) because everyone preferred the alternative currency of “Motes” and “Crystal Shards”.

This is why most MMOs account bind pretty much everything from their Microtransaction stores OR, in the case of tradeable stuff, tie them to some sort of RNG lottery. A direct link between a Gem Store value and a ingame gold value just presents all kinds of economy problems that aren’t directly apparent.

I probably fall into the “don’t care/ambivalent” category, myself.

There will be a lot of times when I’m out doing my dailys and run across a resource (tree/plant/ore) that I’ll go ahead and hit with my unlimited gathering tools, or I’ll pick up a bunch of mats from kills/salvaging.. Whenever my backpack fills up, or whenever I’m done with that character for the day, I’ll do the “deposit all collectibles”, and whatever is left over gets sold on the TP generally for whatever the “Sell Now” price is.

Just pure laziness on my part to be honest. I’ve got 3 of the collection expanders, so anything over 1,000 of a resource I just don’t have the room to store, and I just don’t really care about losing a couple of silver here or there futzing around with selling 30 leftover mithril ore between the “sell now” price of 27c and the “lowest price” of 32c or whatever (or whatever mat I happen to have an excess of).

Now, if I’m selling a whole stack (or multiple stacks) of something, I’ll go to the trouble of looking up the current “Daily Average” price on Spidy, and put it up at something close to that.. But if it’s just a couple of leftover items, I just basically don’t care what they sell for.

So if you’re making money on me (and depending on what you’re flipping, you might be), knock yerself out.

World Transfer

Southern, it seems his lockout has been lifted but he hasn’t put enough time in the new world for the Historian to recognize his new association.

“Your world association will be based on your participation throughout the tournament. If you play on multiple worlds during the tournament, the world you represented the most will be the one with which you are associated. We are adding a new Battle Historian NPC to all the WvW maps who will tell you which world you are associated with.”

Not sure how they are calculating “the most”. Could be achievements earned, objectives captured, ranks earned, hours played – this has not been clarified yet.

Ah, I bet that’s it. That’ll teach me (not) to skim.

I’ve transferred world since 4/4/2014, but the Battle Historian still say I am associated with the old world. I played very WvW frequently, almost daily, so I don’t know how much longer is it going to take before I am deemed to be associated with the new world.

“As a part of these changes, we will also implement new restrictions to WvW access after transferring worlds. These restrictions will go into effect on March 28. After that date, anyone who transfers worlds will be able to play only in the Edge of the Mists WvW map for the duration of their current and subsequent matchup. If you transfer worlds on a Tuesday, you won’t be able to enter the Borderlands or Eternal Battleground maps until the Friday of the following week. You will still be able to play in Edge of the Mists and progress the tournament meta achievement, but you will not be able to contribute to the score of your WvW matchup. These changes are meant to encourage everyone to choose a home world and play on that world for the duration of the tournament.”

I just wish I could fiddle with my inventory and sell stuff on tp while I’m waiting the ICE-AGE it seems to take for zones to load.

I have ‘rural’ broadband that’s comparable to a piece of string with a tin can at each end. And I too am dreading the feature patch. I’ll be lucky to play before Thursday >.<

I have rural broadband too. Sigh. The last patch took me 6 hours. The original game at launch took me 3 days.

Not looking forward to when my computer wigs out and I need a new one.

Back it up. You can get a 32GB Flash Drive for under $20. Then you just have to copy it to the new computer. GW2 doesn’t need to be “installed”, once you have it you can just copy the folder anywhere and create a shortcut to the GW2.EXE file and run it.

Alternately you could get an external USB drive (1TB – 3TB) for $50-$100 and back up most of your entire computer to it.

We could make the new trading system like it was in the older mmos, where you open a store in the capital with your character, and players can walk through the capital and shop, that way is much more immersive. And the chat was much more populated with the sellers posting their stuff every sec.

WTS……
WTS……
WTS……
WTS……

Why in the world is this supposed to be a better system? It’s like the difference between trying to sell your wares by going door to door versus being able to reach the whole world by selling from eBay. Sure, chat is populated. But it’s with spam messages, not with conversations between people.

I’d like to think he was referring more to the way Ultima Online had it set up, where you set up vendors and people would just browse through them, using the same menus that the NPC vendors do (except you make & sell your OWN items on them).

Now THAT was a vendor system. People would operate their own little merchant shops, selling anything & everything. I’ve never seen another MMO even come close to the customizability of the UO vendor system.

That’ll I can agree with. If we ever get access to some hard data, we’ll be in a much better place to say the least.

Please explain to me what your process would be for proving your theories if you had the data.

Start by seeing if there was a wealth gap, how large if present, and if it was growing. Then I could go from there.

This does not answer my question. Feel free to make assumptions as you go, fork the ideas as if drawing a decision tree. This is how I would recommend beginning the analysis with or without data.

You know the answer to that already, John. Even if a wealth gap was shown & proven, the only statement that could be made would be “It’s not FAIR! They have 500,000 gold, and can buy anything, while I struggle to earn 5 gold per day and can’t buy whatever I want, whenever I want!”

Face it – wealthy players have very little, if any, effect on inflation within the game. The total amount of gold in the economy however, does. Any time you have more money/gold coming INTO the economy vs. going out, there’s going to be inflation. If GW2 had a “Closed” economy where there was only a certain amount of money in the game, then wealthy players would have a much larger impact on economical forces – but GW2 is not a closed economy.

As has been stated a few times in the thread, YOU decide where to spend your time in game. If a player wants to spend 8 hours a day farming T6 mats in a level 80 zone to sell on the TP to make money, are they going to make more money than someone who spends 8 hours doing events in a level 1-15 zone? Of course they are.

I’ve never seen an MMO where there wasn’t a wealth gap. Ever.

But plenty of other players have put plenty of effort into their gold as well, and have just received a lot less of it because not all methods of earning gold are even remotely in balance. If the people you cite as having “earned it” did earn that gold, then don’t the other players who put in just as much time and effort into other game activities deserve to have the same amount of gold?

Absolutely not.

You make a choice where to spend your time in game. Do you think a “Rich” person got that way from only playing 30 minutes a day? No; they’ve devoted hundreds, if not thousands of hours buying, selling, crafting, farming, and building their bankrolls.

To use your argument, does a player deserve to be at the top of the PvP leaderboard, even though they never PvP, but have played for hundreds of hours doing other things? It takes hundreds of hours and lots of skill & practice to be at the top, does it not? (I honestly don’t know, I don’t PvP). Maybe to make it “Fair”, we should limit the Top 10 PvPers every week by maxing their damage to 50% of normal, since they’re obviously so good at what they do and spend so much time doing it, that other players never even have a chance at the Top 10. That’s fair, right?

(See how silly that sounds?)

Some players only like to PvE, some only like to PvP, some like to decorate Player-Owned housing (in games that have that), some players like to be “Merchants”. I’ve seen all types throughout the years, from UO to EQ to AC to WoW (and many of its derivatives). Players that only play merchant-type characters will always tend to be wealthy, because that’s what they do.

(Full disclosure – I’m not a TP’er. It’s way too much work for the limited time I have available, and that’s not “fun” for me anyway. But I don’t begrudge those that do enjoy it, the same as I don’t begrudge a PvPer for reaching the top of the Leaderboards, or someone who spends hundreds of hours earning Achivements to be at the top of their respective leaderboard).

Always buy bank tabs from the Bank UI. The Gem Store doesn’t track how many tabs you have, it will let you buy 100 of them if you want to — but the maximum you can USE is 11 (plus the 1 you start with, for a total of 12).

Friend Phoebe Ascension also mentionned another advantage of Terrace over Airship:
Terrace being in Divinity’s Reach you have free wp and near instant loading opportunity of going into your Home instance for your one per day node attending. So you don’t have to park any alt in front of it, and can keep them parked at JP chests or better nodes or what ever.
Whereas Airship users always will either have to park one in front of home instance OR pay the wp cost to get to one of the cities.
It is really a minor thing. Me, I don’t give a dolyak’s calf about it (I’m an airship user).

The Airship has a portal that will take you to the home cities. It’s on the main (top) deck I think (only been there once with a 1-use pass).

No it doesn’t, i have the perma passes of both. The airship doesn’t have the portal, terrace does.

Yep, just like Buford says above, talk to the helmsman.

Honestly the only thing that will get me excited with this implementation if we have a way to get the transmutation “charge” in game for more than just the 0.26% daily reward: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Daily#Rewards
Or maybe buy charges with Laurels. Basically something in game to earn them.

Map Completions give them.

Thanks Southern and StinVec for your help. I went ahead and got them. They are gorgeous.

Now, if they brought Kasmeer’s staff back.. <333

:) Enjoy!

Also, I’m very sorry to have to say that it already was brought back on March 7th for 24 hours.

Sigh.. Yes, I wish I had seen that video when the staff was available, I would have bought it. The Preview Window leaves MUCH to be desired when it comes to accurately displaying the item & its effects. It definitely cost ANet a sale in my case (at least until they offer it again, if ever).

I’m not too sure about the 7790, to be honest. I run the nVidia 650TI Boost (2GB), and while running around the countryside presents no problems at all, in intense fights or heavily populated areas (like Lions Arch) I’ll drop to around 30FPS.

Looking at the Benchmarks:“http://videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html”, the 650TI Boost is rated about 15% higher than the 7790, so I can only imagine that it would also suffer in intense fights or heavily populated areas.

For a few dollars more, you might be better off getting something like the nVidia 660, which is about 20-25% faster than the 7790.

Tracert is not entirely reliable, because it uses Pings on each IP address in the route, and many routers are designed to not respond to pings. The question is, when you do a Tracert, does it do a DNS Lookup correctly and apply the correct IP address? It should be returning 5.9.105.114 as the IP address assigned to gw2skills.net.

If you attempt go to directly to http://5.9.105.114/ do you get a webpage that says “Welcome to nginx!”?

If not, Comcast may indeed be blocking access to that IP; I found that APEWS has the entire Class B IP Range listed in their blacklist http://www.apews.org/ (5.8.X.X and 5.9.X.X) for some reason (which is not listed, but should be). If Comcast is blocking all IP Traffic to that IP range based on the APEWS list, that would be why you can’t reach it.

Alternately, you can try a free Proxy, such as the Cyberghost Proxy: https://cyberghostvpn.com/en_us/proxy – just type in the site name there, and you should be able to access the site with no problems.

The root website (http://www.gw2skills.net) utilizes code that detects browser language and does a redirect to either the English or German versions of the site, so try one of these instead to get directly to the page:

http://en.gw2skills.net/ – English
http://de.gw2skills.net/ – German

If those work, there’s something in your browser that’s eating the language detection or the redirect (like perhaps an adblocker of some sort).

If you’re just trying to end the cutscene (and it’s too late for the “Nowhere to Hide” achievement if the shield has already been up), just attack her with a weapon while the shield is down. She’ll then say “it wasn’t supposed to end like this” and she won’t be able to put her shield back up — you can then stomp her at your leisure.

I made the exotic the day of/day after the Escape From Lion’s Arch was released and as soon as I put stats on it it became soulbound. Maybe it’s a bug that it didn’t soulbound to you guys?

I remember when I picked the stats on mine, it warned me that it would make it soulbound, but it didn’t..

The wiki even has a note at the bottom of it:
“Anomaly: The stat selection process indicates that resulting item will be soulbound, but it is actually account bound, and does not even become soulbound upon equipping.”

Figured they’d fix this sooner or later.

Southern.8973

I went in with a level 24 yesterday, so I don’t think there is a level restriction.

Like Sankofa said though, even though you scale up to level 80, your weapons don’t.. You probably won’t be getting a lot of kills, but you should be able to get credit for most of the events (and thus, level the character) pretty easily though.

Southern.8973

Oh, please. I am not denying there are AFKers in this event, because there are, but if you want your screenshots to actually prove anything, do them in the x:20-x:40 minutes range. Not at the very beginning (when people are still entering/loading) or ending (when people congregate near portals in order to evacuate on time).

I have – you didn’t see my other postings with pics.

I have seen them every time I have had to respawn because the event is scaled WAY to large for the number of active players.

Stop trolling and try to understand that there are two types of players:

Those who follow the rules.

…And those who just want to get by and skirt ANY rules.

Events scale based on the number of people actively participating in them, not on the number of people simply logged into the zone. If you’re simply logged in, but not participating in an event, then you’re not affecting the scaling. This is why it’s recommended that only 8-10 people actively participate in the miasma events, to KEEP them from scaling up — even though there may be 500 people actively running around LA.

It’s not ArenaNet.. It’s a massive DDOS attack happening on the entire Internet. The one tonight took out Blizzard, Steam, CloudFlare, Call of Duty, and several other entire data centers; mostly in Europe, but several in the U.S. as well. BitCoin also got hit with a massive attack, many servers are completely down. There’s really not a whole lot ArenaNet can do about it.
