They have yet to balance WVW and it remains to be broken. And they are already losing money and players. Potentials are well and good but reality is what must be addressed.

And if they only cater tier 1, what about the other tiers in EU and NA? Ignore them? They might as well never have created the tiers and consolidate all players into a bigger server/world into three mega worlds; so they’d only be 1 tier in na and 1 tier in Eu.

The premise behind wvw is numbers and coverage will result to victory. There hasn’t been any move to fix this problem since day one up to now. Hopefully that will change in the future.

Bloodlust = power to those who work for it.

You need numbers to take targets, and to maintain bloodnodes.

The server with more number can maintain such.

It means servers fighting with similar numbers will have fair amount of chances obtaining it.

It means servers not of equal number population during coverage times will not have equal amount of chances obtaining it while fighting for land targets.

It means it favors the server with numerical advantage of whom can dish out numbers to take the nodes and the targets but not the server whom lacks numbers because either the latter can choose to defend targets only or take the nodes or just quit wvw for the week or try to fight and get pawned.

We already know that wvw is a coverage/numbers game. It is already a grinding game. The mechanics of which are already not fair. However, it need not be more unfair than it already is.

And since this game is supposed to be an e-sport material, why should it be recognized as such if it doesn’t meet equal opportunity to win on the three sides?


Other than that, this game is awesome. PVE, PVP, TPVP, except WVW. Well, you can’t have everything I suppose.

We laugh everytime we see people try to zerg the bloodlust nodes. We just follow them and backcap everything. If there’s anything bloodlust does well, it allows low numbers of players have a big effect on wvw.

If you’re already severely outnumbered, you’re going to lose anyways. The complaint here is that they killed you in 2 seconds instead of 2.1 seconds?

I don’t think Anet ever intends for WvW to be an Esport. Just sPvP.

You cannot and should not try to satisfy everyone. It is impossible.

I personally love the bloodlust, on blackgate, it seems it’s usually myself and maybe small groups of 2-3 actually doing the points and holding them. Which I believe was the intention?

Working great over here.

Your server already has the numbers to do everything else, and could afford to split up. Whereas other servers, especially lower tiered servers fighting undermanned will have to defend structures and couldn’t spend what little man power the have to cap nodes at that expense.

The problem of course, here, is if you’re on the weaker server, you’re pretty much doomed.

Gone where the days where it’s common for 10 or 15 to beat 25-30.

I know people who reccomend the Sigil of Restoration, heals on kill.

This is good provided your team is able to down and kill the opponent. Else, this shouldn’t really be your concern since as a commander – based on topic – a dodge will heal more than any kills per restoration, and if you’re using AH, you’ll be a healing machine.

I see energy sigil gets mentioned here and I fully agree on their usefulness. However I have been experimenting with sigil of stamina (refill energy on kill) and seems to have worked okay, anyone else tried this?

Sigil of stamina is okay provided your team is able to down the enemy. I prefer energy because whether the enemy dies or not, I can have an additional dodge per change of weapon.

I’ve tried it. I love it. Works if your force is the stronger one.

E-sport is about balance, like real sports. So, if gw2 is to be an e-sport, there ought to be balance all throughout – whether pve, pvp, and wvw.

Every commander starts bad. Every mistake made makes us better at what we do. We are able to succeed not because we’re naturally good at it, but because we spent time researching and learning the game, and applying it in the field to see if it’s worth repeating or discarding.

Other than my justification,

Having the icon is also good for pve events which require coordinated teams – a good move – and should be the direction of the living world besides areas which allow solo play, and small group play.

What the commander system needs is a buff. Like having different colors of tag per map if more than one tags up (100s worth bonus given as free advise developers).

Ability to check and classify the professions following you. Besides the supply info and squad thing. So that the commander can make use of the team for tactical purposes faster.

No, as clients we should expect them to come up with better ideas than those posted on this forum, or if they do it worse, like with bloodlust and 12-server leagues, then we should expect them to at least tell us what their plan is and why it will be good in the long run. Cant say these forums serve a purpose outside the tech and customer service boards to be honest.

Well, someone out there wanted to implement LOL type traiting for WVW. Whereas, the smarter E-sport developer would have just set the WXP at set amount, like our profession traits; so not everything can be chosen, and just specialize on a few skills with re-traitability.

It is a rushed design.

How it should have been done you ask?

Getting points as is okay, you level your ranks but at a certain point like lvl 80 – you can no longer level your rank points, but earn the ability to retrait it (or always have the option to retrait what you already have) to focus on certain specialties of some sort.

But this doesn’t mean you can’t gain wxp anymore. Those continue like our skills and we can amass those, but in this case for bonus chests like what we’ve been getting, or potential means of barter for gear in wvw.

This means the rank skills will be rebuilt again; so it won’t require so much points per skill.

That alone will fix 90 percent of what’s wrong with wxp. A 1000$ worth idea to fix the game given for free.


The devs already have the template, which is their earlier game design. They just need to be consistent and do trial and error. They can take back updates and put back updates.

To enjoy WVW, especially if your server isn’t doing well, is best to not look at PPT. Thus, if you take away ppt, wvw will be more fun.

However, only those in the top 3 servers who will constantly check their ppt because it is what they’re fighting for.

The good old 0/0/30/30/10 build – AH is nice for commanding. Or 0/0/20/30/20 – so you can get that extra condition removal on the last line trait. 0/15/20/30/5 is fine as well if you want to have quick f1 to cast per things you tag.

Mix knights with cleric, and celestial (trinkets). But what is most important, for me as a commander is. Sigil of energy on your weapons (staff/mace and focus).

Just be that guy who’s eternal, but can’t kill anything – well your staff will tag everything; which counts.

What matters is the little less time you spend multitascing or worrying about your life, the better. And staff allows you to perma skill 1 and tag everyone else. And the mace and focus will ensure your longivity. Hands free to type or press your push to talk and shout your commands.

I keep seeing these gear type mixes. Why not just go full PVT?

The survival playstyle with focus on things other than the game makes sense to me. That is why I opted to not go for a necro commander. Necro has too many ground targeting skills. I like the sigil of energy idea. I’ve seen it on several builds and I wasn’t sure at first.

I think I may hit spvp 8v8 and give some of these build themes a whirl before dropping coin.

Full pvt is okay. You can’t go wrong with pure pvt for wvw.

Reason why I mixed was because I used to run cleric pvt. I just wanted to minimize and maximize some stats to get the same number of healing as before but with added bonus to toughness, and some crit chance (empowering might).

In wvw, your survival counts in this order. Toughness>vitality>power. But as a commander, it’s tougness/vitality/healing (since you don’t do damage, your team does).

Also in the past celestial had this cool magic find stat. :/ Hehe

Sigil of energy is your bestfriend. You can always rely on it


A note on pvp. It doesn’t always translates well to wvw. What works in spvp is pretty much something that might work in a 3v3 in wvw. Anything more doesn’t count because of food, bloodlust buff, the wxp leach and killer.

But it’s always fun to pawn spvp players at hot join.

Let’s be honest. None of us wvw players do this so our world can get the bonuses, but for glory, for the fights, and for our guild pride.

Out of that of course, the pve side of things get to enjoy good stuff. WVW – military/police/ those who protect that country so to speak. Pve – the normal everyday folk.

We don’t expect thanks from them. We do it so they can enjoy what they do.

I have a bunker warrior and bunker guardian. Both are awesome and have their ups and downs. In the end of the day, you’ll probably stick with the character you like seeing more. (my norn is beautiful versus my perky sylvari) w/c is why i play my norn more. Haha. But if my norn was guardian and my sylvari was warrior – that aesthetic look will probably tip the scale too.

Time for a change of direction

WvW isn’t successful enough to meet Anet’s aspirations, and the the way it’s been headed it’s not going to be.

Even with (or perhaps because of) the disasters of the current patch, WvW is rapidly turning into a game focus on the hardcore WvW players and servers. This is emptying out the WvW maps, makes WvW less appealing to new and casual players (they are even more stomp bait than they were in the past), and makes it progressively harder to create successful match-ups in WvW.

The problems seems to arise from two lines of flawed thinking:

  • Flawed Idea #1: Imbalance is a defining characteristic of WvW
    This has led to Anet’s Wvw team:
    a) Implementing changes that make WvW even more unbalanced
    b) Being blind to the potential to improve balance in WvW and the benefits that would deliver (WvW would be more fun for existing players and and more attractive to new/casual players)
  • Flawed Idea #2: Increasing player power is a successful strategy for WvW
    This idea has lead to changes that directly increase the power of dedicated WvW players and servers and in doing so has:
    a) Made WvW less appealing to new players and players on servers with low levels of WvW participation
    b) Exaggerated the differences in competitiveness between WvW servers.
    Amazingly, this idea (which seems to be derived from the flawed imbalance idea) is directly counter to the approach that has been fundamental to the success of the rest of GW2.

Anet need to clean up the mess they’ve made of WvW with this latest patch. But rather than plaster over the latest problems, Anet would be far better to use this as a prompt to change direction and improve the balance in WvW. The obvious steps to doing this are:

  1. Balance up server WvW populations This can be done by:
    a) Unhooking WvW servers from PvE
    b) Capping WvW sever populations at the highest current WvW server population
    c) Consolidating servers with low populations
    d) Making it free to join or transfer to WvW servers with lower populations
  2. Cap WVW gear stats at the exotic level
  3. Remove buffs that cause power creep for WvW players

Once that’s in place, we will all have a more competitive environment in which to play WwW (and without which we simply don’t have enough people to play against). From there Anet can take complexity they’ve already put into WvW and make it work by doing things like: fixing the older lag problems, improving the commander system, fixing the party system, and fixing the excessive incentives for zerging.

Overall, this will make WvW more enjoyable for existing players as match-ups and in-game fights will be more balanced and therefore more exciting. This will also make it easier for new players to join WvW as they will a) have less of a performance deficit against established WvW players, and b) have access to more competitive WvW servers without having to sacrifice ties to their existing PvE communities.

Unfortunately, this will also require Anet to acknowledge that it has made mistakes with the direction it’s been taking WvW. The mistakes are there, but to date Anet has shown very little willingness or ability to acknowledge mistakes. Hopefully the disaster of this latest patch is enough to push them past that.

The other problem will be the dedicated WvW players who’ve become addicted to the extra power the recent changes (guard buff, bloodlust, open ended WXP abilities, ascended weapons) have given their characters. They’ve got used to winning more easily and won’t want to give up their hard won superpowers. Their challenge will be to accept that instead of making WvW better, that increase in power has been undermining WvW by i) making participation in WvW less appealing for new and casual players, and ii) making it harder for servers with more dedicated WvW players to find decent competition.

TLDR: Anet have to fix the current mess they’ve made of WvW. It will be far better if they do that in ways that return balance to WvW because that’s what it’s going to take for WvW to succeed.

The bloodlust does make the stronger stronger and the weaker weaker. I tried to defend this for a few days, but meh. I’m giving up that fight. Haha.

It is a fun mechanic if the servers fighting each other are equal in number. Else, it’s pretty much, hide from the enemy zerg, try to cap a camp, and then wp to homebase.

No player wishes to snipe a dolyak for a wvw living. Sorry devs, you’re on your own.

I think the main issue is the community over reacting to the change; thus the player base is waning, other than new games competing with gw2 and taking new customers.

That’s the approach Anet have been taking to the resistance to the Bloodlust buff – which would be fine if it really is just an overreaction. But what if it’s not?

What if, instead of being an overreaction, the strength of opposition to Bloodlust and the lastest patch is the result of a serious mismatch between where Anet are taking WvW and what really works in WvW? If that is the actual case, then the blindness of “they’re just overreacting” is going to make it very hard for Anet to see that they need to change direction if they want WvW to be successful.

The most common complaints I’ve heard about WvW have been i) lag and ii) unbalanced match-ups. This latest patch has made both of these worse. That means that the reaction to this patch is not an overreaction, but the inevitable result of making the most disappointing aspects of WvW even worse.

You just pointed out existing problems since the beginning of wvw. I think it’s because of the earlier bugs not being fixed, players who kept it in just couldn’t keep it in anymore and started the drama.

It’s pretty much like that guy who just kept the bullying in till he decided to kill everyone with a gun.

The problem with wvw is the things which needs fixing hasn’t been fixed, but there has been a constant addition to it. And because the meta still requires coverage, numbers, and resources to win, it’s pretty much the same old thing, which is getting boring.

So, wvw is as it was, just with added icings.

Pretty much if you want skill and tactics – tpvp. Casual gameplay – spvp. Your end game – every thing else. But WVW can offer much more if people cooperate and start ignoring the ppt, and celebrate the little victories.

I can’t really defend wvw except point out that it’s the same old thing.

bad builds – made almost viable in wvw because of the buffs. good builds became more op because of the buffs.

luckily not all players know how to build a wvw toon. so even if they have 3x orb buffs, they just survive longer now.

but those who do use the proper gear, feels like trying to kill demi gods.

that is if we don’t try to get the orbs back, and if we do get them, and if we don’t have numbers to cap it because of enemy roamers – it’s not the op thing that gets to you, but the stress and aggravation of not getting it. ahaha

a burst of time spent now – good fun. but less time in the game over all.

^ that’s like asking wvw to be similar to spvp whereby you limit the skills/gear/food etc. and making it nearer to a balanced game.

If that be the case, might as well revamp ascended weapons to cap at exo stats w/ infusions. And hopefully ascended trinkets back to exo level w/ infusions.

Wont happen. Would be nice, the costs would have to be insane though like 2,500BoH as well as 20g or something silly

This. Badges of honor + gold + laurel and globs = ascended. >3< make it happen.

SPVP is casual. TPVP – hardcore. WVW – end game and hardcore.

The way I see it, WvW is both casual and hardcore. If you’re a casual player that wants to play with no pressure, you can join a pug zerg. If you want hardcore PvP action, it’s certainly available as well. That’s why WvW is so popular.

Unfortunately Anet seems intent on pushing all hardcore players into sPvP thereby killing WvW.

Seems is the word there. It’s probably the paranoia of players who think wvw isn’t getting much attention.

I think the main issue is the community over reacting to the change; thus the player base is waning, other than new games competing with gw2 and taking new customers.

All games will have to stand against competition. That’s the reality of things. And real life will butt in; thus taking more gamers from the game.

So what if anet is intent on taking players to tpvp. Are you going to force yourselves to play if you don’t want to?

WVW isn’t dead. It just had a good revamp. Less people doing jp, fun pk at ruins. More tactical and strategical gameplay. Thing is, some people want it easy, and safe, and don’t even want to factor how to win anymore, and are looking for something to blame for not trying (did you ever see that guy wearing berserker armor and being a rally bot? sure he might be enjoying himself but he will make the commander rage – who gets angry at the militia – who will hate the commander – and the cycle of hate starts).

But I do have to remind our devs to fix the following:

1. can’t kick offline party member
2. packet loss in wvw server bls.
3. glitch towers and areas w/c need fixing.

Sure, we can party again by leaving the first one. But this is part of the game’s mechanics which isn’t supposed to be broken.

We can still glitch into somethings w/c means it hasn’t been fixed, which means someone in there needs a job performance review.

I see nothing wrong with spvp, tpvp, or wvw. Each will always have a player base. Going to E-sports will ensure professions will be balanced as similar in the case of starcraft/warcraft/lol/hon and other rts games.

And no matter how developers suggest people to play a certain game, the player still has the power to choose to play or not to play.

What the devs can, and only do, is hope to make a game that will interest players but I doubt they can, and should even try to please everyone. See it from their point of view, you have a boss who will fire you if you do not follow the instructions. And not every project can be given a go if suggested by a player versus those working in the project.

What the devs, of course should do, is to use statistics/studies to determine the popularity of games. Maybe learn psychology to learn how players play, and finally to learn to regress updates if the patch is resulting to bad product release or reduce in sales. Just basic economics.

On a side note. The problem with stacking on a server has little or nothing to do with the leagues. This has been the thing since WVW started, servers promote their servers; therefore get more transfers, while other servers do not provide incentive to stay or invite others to transfer to them. Shake hands and be social guys, at least even in this game.

There’s nothing wrong with guilds or players stacking in one server. The problem is other servers don’t make it enticing for players to stay in their servers.

Only we can create or break our community guys. ^-^

I pretty much change builds to try new things, but so far since I’ve been a level 80 warrior, I’ve been returning to the following.

knights armor/ berserker trinkets/ soldier or melandru runes/ knights or berserker weapons/ hammer warhorn sword longbow shield riffle builds.
