We need a cleave. I say give us a scythe with cleave effects. We have “fake” scythes with a few staff skins, but why not the real thing. Hopefully we’ll see with a future expansion.

Bas does have a point on the minions though. They are utility bar skills, and like other utility bar skills their benefits are temporary.

Having played multiple classes at this point, I think you will continue to see buffs in upcoming patches. Necro’s are fun, but mostly due to the challenge and having to be on your game constantly.
I think in a few months people will look back on this time, and wonder how they stuck it out. Those that do will wear it like a badge of honor.
I believe Necro’s are pretty good, but they still have a ways to go to match the fluidity and synergy of the other classes.

No offense, but would you want to do this? Stand around on lookout duty, I mean. I’ve done this, and it gets kind of boring if the objective you’re babysitting never comes under attack.

You can have both though.
Your goal is to get points. The fun is the combat that occurs trying to get more points and preventing the opponents from getting theirs.
I don’t see how they are possibly mutually exclusive at all.
I guess I see it as the goal isn’t really just to get points, but to get more points than your opponents, i.e. to come in 1st place.
You can still have fun and lose the overall point total, so I agree with the OP there, but that doesn’t mean that the point total doesn’t exist.
I would just like to see the goals readjusted to place more emphasis on the battles themselves, instead of a week long point total that is largely a part of factors outside of the game.

I also feel that at least through level 20, their weapons skills are kind of underwhelming. I have difficulty creating synergy between weapons unlike Elementalist, Thief or Warrior. The ranges on weapons skills for Necro are just…odd.
This kind of leads to boring gameplay, imo. Dagger with Necro compared to dagger with Ele or Thief are like night and day in terms of fun. I have a hard time leveling my Necro because of this. It’s fun because there is thought to it, but bland at the same time.

Because points provide a goal. You can have fun in multiple ways.
But here you say it: “..points provide a goal”. WvW has a goal — a goal beyond just having fun.
That’s why people complain about points, because points are a poor goal. The aim is to become first in your tier, but that is largely determined by factors outside of the game.
If second or third place is just as good, then first is not a goal.

I haven’t logged in to play WvW in weeks now, even though usually it’s one of my favorite gameplay types. This is largely due to the point mechanics.
Like mentioned in the OP, I’d rather see big guild vs. guild battles. World announcements and bonuses when SM gets taken. Scrap the points and hide them behind the scenes. Animosity, grudges, rivalries, Guild vs. Guild are the exciting things in WvW, not server point tallies. It seems there are more rivalries on the forums than in-game.
I agree also that WvW is the worst gold sink in the game, and that’s really not fair. If anyone can fix it though, it’s ANet. Here’s hoping to see some bigger ideas in the future after they make some headway with the engine, and the culling mechanic.

TW (Tempest Wolves) on SoR are really good in the open field. I’ve seen them wipe some pretty big zergs, and their guild is not that large. I was also in some battles with them against TL (Team Legacy) when we played IoJ, and those were pretty epic.
PRX is also very strong (formerly SoS – kind of sad you moved). Those two guilds have always stood out for me. One on our side, the other against us.

Haven’t posted on the forums in a while, but wanted to pop into this WvW thread to say I have very much enjoyed this match up. I’m on SBI. I popped into WvW a little off and on before, but this match up has been enough fun that I keep coming back. My PvP skills are very lacking, but I’ve managed to get lucky a few times. I even got my monthly WvW kill achievement for the first time ever. THANK YOU to SoR, TC, and of course, SBI for the fun. Hopefully I’ll get better and be able to contribute more.
Same here!! been on and of WvW while SBI is still on tier 1. But since SBI moved to tier 2, i felt a bit of responsibility to contribute for SBI. This match up is been really fun, so i decided to leave wow (for the time being) & spent most of my gaming time WvW-ing.

Also, I think, people see a failure to win as, well, a demoralizing loss — a serious problem requiring drastic action to fix. This, despite the fact that every week 2 out of every 3 servers must, by necessity, lose. Sometimes great pairings are ruined because even though the 3rd place team actually did well and had a close, fun match, too many people said, “3rd place?! This server sux!” and they moved away, because moving is easy.
Once Anet removes free server transfers I think WvW will become a lot better. It’s a shame its taken them so long to implement something that was, I thought, intended to be ready to go on launch.
I think you really touched on something here in questioning the points system. It reminds me of the old “Warlord” PvP rankings from Word of Warcraft. There could be only one (or maybe a handful?) ranked players on a server, so players were pitted against each other in a race to the highest point totals for the week, every week.
What happened was some people stayed up 24 hours, played days without sleep, grinding out matches to try and get the highest point totals so they could earn their gear. It was a battle of attrition much like you see here with the servers; exhausting for everyone, but only worthwhile for the winner, and ultimately unsustainable.
IMO the point of WvW needs to be objective based, not point based. Each server should fight for control of some large objective that maybe provides bonuses or something, and then the whole map resets once it’s achieved ala Warhammer. The points system should be kept for even matchmaking, but should be in the background, not visible to players.

OMG me too! When I left EB today I was totally encumbered due to all the of the loot! I had a debuff that made me walk at 50% run speed, and as I hobbled back to our keep, a random item would drop out of my inventory every 100 feet. It was crazy!
I felt like Santa Clause with my breadcrumb trail of exotics left behind. My bags are so bursting with badges though I just didn’t have room for anything else! Thanks guys!

Is it intended that when I drop a golem, another player can jump in, and I’m unable to reclaim it as the owner? Other siege doesn’t work this way.

One thing I will say, is that I get more badges in WvW with straight damage builds over condition builds. I think this is mostly due to the bleed limit stacking, and some enemies dying before your bleeds really register any damage.
Condition is much more survivable, but in my experience less rewarding in the form of badges (unless you find lots of 1v1s).

This is how you effectively deal with a permastealth troll. If you’re getting killed by these people be sad, since the nerf C&D does absolutely pathetic damage if used as the only damage source.
Blocking C&D does not prevent the stealth, and the thief can still blind you with a trait, preventing a 1 hit counter attack if that is on your bar. Does it make you die? No, but it certainly makes retaliating against a C&D thief annoying as hell. Mechanics like this need to be fixed.

he was in 2 vs 5, since he had an big bad thief that you missed . Maybe because he was stealthed?
He runned betwen 5 enemy’s with invulnerability and teleport , without making any damage. While he was on back chased by 2 enemy’s , thief from his party was holding 4 enemy’s. Check what i had writed : i can go vs an party, troll them to death and kill them by turn. He did that ? He wasn’t even alone

I disagree. The culling is probably the biggest problem in WvW currently, and also probably the trickiest to solve, and occurring at the lowest level from a systems perspective.
I kind of applaud ANet for tackling this, because like you said, it means they must pass on the “quick wins”, in favor of building a stronger foundation. In the long term, this is the correct move, but in the short term it can be perceived like they don’t care about WvW or aren’t doing anything, since we don’t see the results of their hard work.
I disagree with you completely. Firstly culling is not the only Major problem with WvW and many of the other ones such as exploits or huge bugs could be much more easily fixed. So passing on those is just dumb (such as jumping into a keep or teleporting through the door or npc’s turning hostile in a keep and killing its own door, not being able to go through nw SMC wall when its down and fortified, etc, etc, etc.) These kinds of things make this game look like a joke really. And you suggest instead of working on these game breaking issues we should send all our manpower on something that might not ever be fixed. If you want a strong ‘foundation’ no bugs would be a good start.
In fact I have to say the only thing we have gotten from there culling ‘work’ is just worse and worse performance. Now I can not only not see thieves (the original problem), but now I cant see friendlies, enemies of all classes, siege at a distance on occasion. And when i do see them if there is enough my skills wont go off for 20-30 seconds. I’ll be honest I much rather not see thieves then the current performance. A big battle at SMC turns the game into almost a turn based game because of the lag, which extends across the whole map.
While they have been ‘fixing’ culling the game has been dieing.
Now as to the perception of Anet not caring about wvw. That would be because of interviews like this where they basically laugh at the core issues of the players. It would also be due to a huge lack of communication. Not much updates or bug fixes since launch. They can drop the servers immediately for some toymaker trix bag to fix it, but they cant fix jumping into keeps for what 6 months? Does that scream caring?
Sounds like you need a deep breath, and a break from WvW for a bit.

i can troll to death an full party of 5 players with my thief , and i will kill them all , by turn at the first mistake.
but i am not skilled on my warrior and guardian cause i got 0 chances to fight vs an 5 players group , ah in fact i got 30% chance to surive vs 2 players with 1 of those classes and 95% with my thief vs 5 players

Many of you claimed to know how to kill thief, I would say that is bull crap because you haven’t even scratch the surface of a powerful thief. I myself have killed many thief, the bad to decent one that is. Against a thief that know what to do, sorry you are out of luck. Not all thief goes dagger, the good one know this. Good thief will go for pistols and can still do plenty of dps with rendering assistance. If you’re a warrior that go pure dps? Well all they have to do is wait for your measly 5 second balance stance to go off and you’ll die in probably 5 seconds or less. Want to do a tank build? Sorry to disappoint but you will not be able to take him down with low dps, even if you managed to stop his bursts, your HP at this point is down to probably 2/10 of your 30k HP so it wont be long before he finishes you off while you’re still trying to look for him.
Again, for those of you that claimed to know how to kill thief? You are probably killing the bad-decent thief
Did you just say that a Thief will take off 30k HP from a Warrior in under 5 seconds using Pistols? I think that Thief’s name was William Wallace.

Who said I was dying to them on my elementalist? Actually one killed me on my Mesmer but my Mesmer is level 60 and even though I am scaled to 80 and my Mesmer is in all rares this thief was level 80 and in exotic gear.
If I was playing dagger dagger on my ele he wouldn’t have killed me or at least not easily. The thief burst damage combined with the traiting for permanent stealth and initiative is a little OP.
Just to clear up though, there is no build that does all of these things.
Perma stealth requires points into the Toughness, Vitality, and Condition damage lines. It’s possible to trait for perma stealth, but you trade your burst potential.
It’s the same with burst and initiative regen. The uber backstab instagib build requires 30 points in Crit, and 25+ points in Power. It’s possible you can trait for 3 extra initiative points in total, but nothing to regen initiative or give you permanent initiative.
There’s just so much misinformation. It really feels like a witch hunt.

Merging the servers does not solve the issues discussed in this thread, and brings its own set of problems.
For one, it will not stop people from playing too much! Adding more coverage doesn’t negate the ability to push. There are stronger guilds, stronger alliances, stronger players. The desire to come to the rescue when you find your server getting knocked back on its heels won’t go away just because there are a few more people around to help.
Second, if it’s not the lack of people, then surely it will be too many people, and the queue is what prevented you from stopping the comeback! The only way to really be sure no one “night caps” you is to make sure you have a queue on all maps 24/7. But what happens when you’re losing your Garrison, but your guild can’t get in because the map is full? Does ANet have magic to make sure all maps are at 100% population, but never over?

It’s worth noting, while they said we’re not working on new versions of the home maps currently, they didn’t say anything about new maps in general…..
Also I’ll throw out that the work our WvW guys are doing on culling and progression systems are extremely large, these are feature systems unto themselves. For example a lot of the culling work requires re-building almost entirely the way our game compiles, loads, and handles assets in general. For many companies, this task could literally years, we’re trying to pull it off in a matter of months, these guys are rock stars.
I know some of you got the impression there isn’t much development going on here, but I was to clarify you couldn’t be more wrong. There is a boat load of very serious WvW being done, much of it they discussed in this interview. Major features require many month long projects, our hope is you’ll start seeing the major fruits of those labors starting in our February update.
You’ll hear more details from our WvW team once stuff gets closer to finalized and tested, but we think you’re going to be thrilled with the stuff that’s coming. As an old DAoC fan, I’m freaking stoked about what these guys are doing.
With all due respect, but some issues should NOT take long, like the mesmer hop-hop-hops on a wall and takes a keep with friends nevrer breaching a wall.
Or the we can’t see the target but we can take it out nonetheless.Not to mention the very, very annoying we-can-catapult-a-wall-down-without-any-yellow-crosses-comming-up.
These are all very, very annoying issues, that should not take alot of time.

Personally I can’t wait until the meta switches from teams of stealth herpaderpa-dps to teams of bunkers with tons of CC….. Ah the early days of an MMO when people are still unfamiliar with team play and looking for the way to “pwn noobs”. Remember these days in a year or two, when all the “Thief is useless in WvW!” threads take over these forums.
Yeah, I have a thief, and yeah, I think stealth needs some sort of nerf (or culling fix, but not holding my breath for that, since it likely requires technology to advance significantly). Shadow refuge still has a stupidly long duration, and the ability to chain stealth without getting “revealed” is game breaking in many cases (spent a long time last night with several people camping a mesmer corpse inside garrison while one cheese-perma-stealth thief ran in repeatedly to get bits of a rez on it, eventually it got up despite being nearly killed dozens of times, balance? hello?)….
How are Elementalists…seriously….Elementalists(?) complaining about Thieves. Ele’s have the most overpowered spec in the game right now. I mean wow. When you’ve got Ele’s and Guardians complaining about Thieves, the witch hunt is in full effect.
There needs to be some serious L2P in here. I know this is the WvW board, but try hitting up a tourney or two before forming your conclusions.

WvW is the biggest time and money sink in the game atm (except maybe Legendary grinding, but at least then you get something out of it).
I have fun. I play all the time, but if you try and help drop siege, purchase upgrades, and take care of your own repairs it gets expensive. The crap loot doesn’t help much.

Also, alliances will never work because no one will ever get an entire server to agree to it. You’re going to have players who don’t know or don’t care and they’ll continue to do what they please. I feel like this time we waste talking about alliances can be spent better elsewhere.
I don’t think “alliance” is the right word, or “cease fire” or any of these things. It’s just strategy, and choosing where to focus your efforts.
Quite frankly, dividing your numbers equally against opponents who are not of equal size is not smart. Not recognizing when you and your enemy share a common enemy is also not smart.

I would love to see a TC-SoR alliance against us. It is, in my opinion, the intended course of action in WvW, and it makes these aging match ups far more competitive.
I’m probably going to get dissed here, but since it’s New Year’s and I’m on my second bottle of wine, I’ll come out with it. I agree with you.
I don’t know where this “gentlemen’s agreement” came from where it’s bad form to 2 v 1, but I do believe that was the intended side effect of the 3 realm system. I think that’s what ANet sort of envisioned would happen in WvW, but player pride has kind of circumvented that.
I will continue to play, and listen to commanders, and do what I can to help my server, but I admit that I am surprised that on ANY of the current matchups, the two bottom servers haven’t teamed to take out #1.
It’s what’s unique about WvWvW compared to football or something.

SoR has a great PvE community as well. The other day I saw a player hitting up map chat in the lower levels, and welcoming all new players with a gift, and generating conversation. The new people really seemed to enjoy it.
This is a WvW board, but sometimes our family or significant others aren’t as in to WvW as we are, so the Sanctum is a good place for them as well.
Maybe the best thing that can be said about the server though, is that the people here are here to stay. Win or Lose. This community will only grow in the coming months and years, so Sanctum is a perfect place to stake your claim.

Not sure what SoR is doing. Playing for second place perhaps? Dunno, the strategy does not make much sense to me. It seems SoR has a chance at first if they push BG down during their off hours.
Looks like SoR is content in trying to play for second and keep TC down. And this when BG has almost double the score of TC and SoR already have…
A hint for all the SoR folks.. Why exactly are you continually not hitting on BG when they are so far ahead? You’re making it easy on them by antagonizing your potential partners and letting BG bend us both over.
This isn’t what is happening. Unfortunately your perspective gets skewed when the only person responding to your actions in game is SoR. I guarantee you SoR spends as much time fighting BG as they do TC.
Point being, why? Take the effort you’re expending against TC and use it against BG and what happens? BG goes down. Sor, by fighting against TC when we’re both down almost 1/2 in points against BG, guarantee’s that BG will win again.
So yes, in essence, SoR is fighting for second place because the only way they stand a chance to close the gap on BG and actually win, is to not fight the only other group that is also fighting BG.
I guess if SoR is happy with always being the brides-maid and never the bride they can keep right on doing what they are now.
Ha, that’s so not true. I can tell you for a fact that on SoR BL we don’t play favorites. If anything we usually go for BG since they are the bigger threat and have more players on the field usually. We know we can’t beat them in score since our morning numbers are soooo low, so we try to make life as hard as we can for them.
Incidentally, we tried leaving TC relatively alone on our BL the other day. You had your BL all red so we saw no problem holding Bay and Redbriar and focusing on slamming our heads against Hills all night. And what happens? You golem rush our fully upgraded Bay when we were busy at Hills. We didn’t forget that little cheap shot by the way.
TC also decided to rush Durios last night when they had the outer wall of SM down.
A few of us thought, “Hey lets just leave it be.” SM was a fortress, but TC had done a good job draining supply and breaking through. We thought that if TC was going to set up another treb there, and supply from Umber to start hitting another wall of SM we weren’t going to stand in your way.
We had outmanned buff at this point, so we were going to just interrupt BG supply, and focus on our upgrades, but what did TC do? They took Durios…then Umber…then they pushed onto a fully upgraded Bravost…and started setting up siege on our keep!
We had no choice but to come help defend, and retake everything. I found Lanthrudar’s post hilarious in this context.

Well, we may be the newbie in T2 but we were the first to take all of their own Borderland, woot!
Probably because SoR and BG killed each other and because we encopuraged each other not to sleep untill we secured it, but still, still, we got it first, woot!
Technically SoR were the first to secure a borderland, although it was BGBL,
Hey I just wanted to say really nice job PINK on your borderland defense. You were out in force guarding your Yaks and making sure they got to Hills, and that your supply lines stayed open.
I’m used to being able to have my way with the Yaks and interrupt the supply myself, but you guys completely shut me down, and were able to keep supply going to SH. That made it super tough on us.

While I understand it, it frustrating to see people do things that hurt the good fights.
- Tribal mentality about servers. Our server is better then yours. The game would be more balanced if guilds would actually transfer to even out a tier, and forget misplaced/illogical server loyalties.
- guilds moving to the winning server. This just makes no sense every way I look at it and is not good for server balance. If you want to play within a specific tier, pick the least competitive server and move there. If you really care about the health of wvw, that’s the best choice.
If you move to a server because you want to help it move up a tier, you are doing more harm then good. I know you didn’t mean to have this effect, but that’s how it works.
I really don’t think it’s about stacking to a superserver. It’s just about coverage.
I don’t care if I play in T1 or T10, but it’s nice to have a healthy coverage in all timeslots so the towers and keeps you spend money on, and spend time building don’t just get ninja’d at night when no one is on.

Well, atleast we fall together. It’s been a good 2 months IoJ, certainly been a pleasure.
Ouch. I’m wondering if SoR and IoJ should just merge. If IoJ Oceanics won’t move to SoR (understandably since they want other Oceanics around for PvE etc.), then maybe SoR NA should move there.
I hate saying that. I’ve been SoR since day one, and may even stay behind if this did happen, but it seems to make a lot of sense coverage-wise.
Well… if enough Oceanics/Asian players come to SoR, it wouldn’t be an issue.
There will be people around to play if they all come at once.
I would love this as much as anyone, but basically IoJ was chosen at the very beginning as an Oceanic server. You’d have to migrate all the PvE’ers and everyone else now over to SoR to make it work. I’m just not sure how feasible that is.

C’mon now. Treason? They gave their reasons in the OP. There’s no one online during their play time. They waited to see if more guilds would join in their slot, but it never panned out. This is a game after all.

Some will just buy it merely because of “Hey look i’m a commander now” and then during battles, they don’t communicate with anyone.
I’m not disagreeing with the OP, but I know on my server we use a lot of voice communication. It’s possible some of the commanders are just not speaking in /map due to concerns over spies, or just that it’s faster to use voice chat.

I will agree, Shadow Refuge’s stealth duration is still way too high. There’s a reason why almost all thieves have SR on their bar.
Do you know how many thieves, as a thief, I’ve killed while in Shadow Refuge? There is a giant red circle on the ground…my goodness.
People talk like Thieves are some godly class, but they’re teally not that durable. and there are other classes better at escape / utility.

Not long ago stealth got nerfed in that using Shadow Shot now causes you to drop cloak. It used to be you could Shadow Refuge and double bowshot away before you were even visible.
Most other classes probably didn’t even know this. The 50% buff to run speed in stealth offers similar escapability, but now you must trait for it.
