Suggestions on how to get PoIs in another team's base?

in WvW

Svenn.5209

I’m sitting at 99% world map completion and the last bit I need is 3 PoIs and a Vista in WvW. This isn’t a thread complaining about needing WvW for world completion, I have no problem with that. However, we’ve been blue for at least 3 freaking weeks in a row now and I can’t seem to get these last couple bits.

Anyone have suggestions on how to get a PoI owned by an opposing team? I need Cragtop, Redbriar, Greenlake, and the southern Vista in the Green Borderlands Garrison. These are all basically on the other side of the map from our blue spawn and I can’t get people to ever take them, so I’m looking for a way to sneak in or something just to hit the PoI. I’ve been trying to wait for a wall or something to go down from the other two teams fighting each other but if I get anywhere even close to one of those fights they all turn on me.

And no, I will not server hop just to do this, especially since I have to wait 24 hours to transfer back.

The air staff attunement just feels generally weak. The #1 is really good, and the #2 is okay. The rest of the skills just generally feel weak. The #3 and #5 don’t work half of the time it seems (I watch people run right through the #5 constantly and nothing happens). The main use I’ve found for this attunement is keeping up swiftness for extended periods.

I also feel like most of our utility skills are pretty weak. The signets in particular are all very weak. The passive effects on all of the signets are too minor to really make any difference and the active effects are not worth it. Signet of Earth, for example, gives 90 toughness and can be activated to immoblize. 90 Toughness is almost entirely unnoticeable and immobilize in general is fairly weak, especially in PvP.

I love this class but I do feel like we are just generally weaker than most, especially when it comes to burst damage. I can do a slow burn (no pun intended) and some decent AoE damage but I haven’t found any good options for burst damage.

On another note: I don’t appreciate having content in a game that I might not be able to complete due to straight up skill. If this was the real life and I hadn’t paid for this game, I’d just say “Oh well… guess I’m just not good enough to do that” but as I have paid for this product, it is a giant slap in the face when the developer says “l2p nub”. There is no content in this game that can prepare you for their absurd dungeon runs and even the first dungeon you do is stupid hard with no learning aspect except beating your head against the enemies until they die.

I 100% completely disagree with this. Purchasing a game does not mean you should be guaranteed to be able to do everything. That’s a sense of entitlement that I just don’t get. Games are based on skill, it’s not a passive activity like a movie or something. They don’t need to nerf everything just so everyone and their grandmother can do it while half watching TV.

Also, if you are doing nothing but “beating your head against enemies until they die” then you are doing it wrong. Yeah, the first time you step into a dungeon it is a jarring experience. They are hard, much more so than the outside world PvE. There are definite strategies here and things you need to learn (like how/when to dodge and to stay out of the red circles). Once you learn these things the dungeons just become pretty easy. If you can’t dodge and avoid the red circles, then why do you deserve to be able to complete all of the dungeons?

In fact, I disagree with most of the people complaining in this thread. Moving rewards to the end of the dungeons was an awesome move. I am not sure about the diminishing rewards, but I don’t have a big problem with them. The dungeons are already pretty easy, and it really doesn’t take long at all to get the rewards, especially with the increases they just put in (assuming no bugs).

From the patch notes:
“More improvements will be made in coming weeks. Players who complete the story before the final update will be equally compensated once the new rewards are in.”

Sounds like they’ve got more planned past the random loot bags. If they do decide to do something like a unique skin or special tokens it will certainly take some time. The increase to level 78+ green or better loot for the random bags is a really welcome change though.

Busko, my guess is that, as with most things, the change is not retroactive and players who had the old loot bags aren’t getting the new level 78+ greens from them. I could be wrong but so far there haven’t been many changes that were retroactive like that.

If they gave a level 80 Exotic weapon to every person that finished the personal story, wouldn’t that make Weaponsmithing and any other trade skills that craft weapons kind of worthless? Maybe not worthless, but it sure would hurt them.

I would love to see at least one item with a unique skin though for completing the story. I’d be fine with it being a green or a rare. Alternately, some other cosmetic reward (in addition to the random loot) such as a unique mini-pet or something would be cool.

I’ve been holding off on finishing the last mission because of the reward so I’m not sure… is there at least a title for completing it?

I don’t think we need more of a penalty here, but instead more of a reward. How about bonus rewards for less deaths or clearing in a certain amount of time. These are things that are not required to do/enjoy the dungeon, but could give an extra challenge/incentive for players to do it well.

They had this in Mu Online…. it was an okay system… but this brings the game back to going after the gear. Guild Wars 2 is not and MMORPG about the GEAR it is about player SKILL. I want to play a game because I am good at PLAYING it, not because I am good at sitting there for hours on end getting the best gear and then going and upgrading it.

Everyone incorrectly keeps saying this game is about “skill” and not “gear”

Then why even have gear?

This game is about BOTH skill and gear.

ArenaNet needs to strike a balance between the two.

We should be able to upgrade our weapons, but make it a risky proposition with diminishing returns.

This, really. It’s not asking for huge upgrades, it’s not affecting sPvP. It’s less of a boost than holding an orb in WvW. It’s something for people to do. It’s a nice risk/reward system (which games need more of, imo).

I really love the collections feature, but there are a lot of things that should go into the collection but just don’t. Please consider adding new slots for all of the crafting components. It’s a bit odd to me that Wood and Wood Planks go into the collection, but then if I convert them to Wood Dowels they don’t have a spot so I have to try and hand organize them in my regular bank.

Examples of things that should be added to the collection:

  • Dowels
  • Inscriptions
  • Jewels (the Gemstone + Filigree items)
  • Weapon/Armor Components (Axe Hafts, Staff Heads, Focus Cores, etc)
  • Rare Crafting Materials (Pile of Soiled Essence, Destroyer Cores, Crystal Slivers, etc)

I am probably forgetting some others but these are all crafting components and don’t seem to have any other use, yet they don’t go in the crafting collections. I am not even hurting on bank space; it is just annoying having to tab back and forth searching for all the crafting components and trying to figure out how to organize them all. Honestly, I would even be willing to pay gems to just have these as extra collections spots instead of having to go through my regular bank.

I would really like to know if they are going to retroactively give out these rewards. I am on the very last step but I am holding off on completing it until the rewards get fixed, but it’s getting harder to wait. If I knew I would get the updated rewards when it is fixed I would just go ahead and complete it already.

As for those saying they can’t do it… while they might not be able to randomly spawn stuff in the world for the sake of doing it, they could put in a one time bit of code to check on first login after a patch to see if a player has completed the story already and give them the correct reward, or an NPC who will give you the correct reward if you didn’t receive it (they did that with the Hall of Monuments portal stone).

Why no capcity for large Team gameplay?

Svenn.5209

I have to disagree with most of what you’ve said here.

First of all, the “large team end-game content” comes in the form of the large dynamic events. Also, the raiding setups of other MMOs requiring you to schedule times to gather 10-40 people is just not fun. I don’t want to have to schedule my play times, I want to just hop in and have fun. The dungeons are plenty good enough for that. Also, trying to get together 10-40 people can be a huge pain, and once you do I don’t think the payoff is worth it. And this is coming from a top raiding guild leader from a previous game.

As for tournament tickets… aren’t there free tournaments? I’m pretty sure I saw those listed. Yes, there are the “paid” tournaments, but what is wrong with that? Also, you can get tournament tickets just from playing the hot join pretty easy.

And as for multiple guilds… I love it. I have a few groups of friends I play with and being able to coordinate with all of them is great. If your guild has people jumping representing other guilds constantly then that means you need to do more to keep them engaged. Most of the people in my primary guild (the one I run) are always representing, but I’m always talking to people and starting up group events and stuff.

As for WvW… 100g seems like a lot now, but I’ve been getting gold pretty quick these days. I’m also noticing a trend of the top end items on the trading post continuously going up in value to the point where the top end items used to be about 3-4g and now they are more like 50g. Right now there might not be many commanders, but it’ll become a lot more common soon enough. I think the big problem right now is just the queues and being able to get everyone in to WvW together.

I agree with the OP completely.

I have two guilds, a WvW guild and a RL family/friends guild. Both of them are interesting but I can’t speak to both.

I don’t care if I have to represent one so one guild can get points, but I want to speak to both guilds at once.

But that is not what the OP wants. The OP wants you to only be allowed to be in one guild. I think that is a bad idea.

I would love to be able to speak to all my guilds at once though. It would be nice to be able to set up /g1, /g2, etc or something for each guild I am in.

How are Dungeons meant to be played?

Svenn.5209

I’m not sure I agree—I thought GW2 was supposed to be ‘different’. I thought were were supposed to play our chars and not have to worry about cookie-cutter roles and builds and everyone, no matter the character, can work together victoriously.

Balanced options means to me that there are many viable ways to go about beating our foes—and I agree it would be unreasonable to think that there won’t be many ineffective possibilities too but my exceptions are these:

— I keep seeing tanking as others’ solution to succeed and some with tank+healer (though they deny it)
— I keep seeing “you have to have…” survivability, as in, points must go in toughness, vitality, or both (no glass cannons); rather than “stove-piping” everyone, everyone is homogenized (except for the tank and healer who aren’t tanks or healers ofc) by stove-piping builds

You do not have to have any sort of “tanking”. In fact, in some of my most successful groups we simply bounced the mobs around between players to spread out the damage. The most important thing is control; whether it’s a combination of various CC (any combination of blinds, stuns/knockdowns, weakness, etc, tons of choices here), kiting, bouncing the boss around, avoiding damage (dodge rolls/aegis/protection), etc. You have plenty of options on how to not die, but this is definitely the most important thing to figure out.

Again, options doesn’t mean “everything works all the time always”. It means there will be some that work better than others in different situations. It means that if you toss together an awful build (and I’m generalizing) then it will be tougher for you, though still not likely IMPOSSIBLE. Part of the challenge is creating more effective builds. This doesn’t mean there are only a couple viable builds, it just means that you will have an easier time with some builds. As I mentioned before, we have never made anyone spec into a certain build for a dungeon and we have never run into a problem.

That isn’t a disadvantage, that just eliminates the damage specialist as an option. Really, why bother giving options when one can’t use them?
Tough to survive, sure, fair enough—those with superior Jackie Chan abilities can capitalise on that, but why is impossible necessary?

You do not HAVE to have points in toughness, vitality, or healing in order to succeed. People are offering these up as suggestions for those who are having trouble, because it can make things easier. I have a friend who is exclusively power, precision, crit and he runs dungeons with us fine. Can he take a hit? Of course not, but he finds other ways to survive… knowing when to dodge/stay out of the way of most attacks or kiting usually, along with some CC like blind, works well enough for him. The problem is glass cannon is a build that is simply harder to play well.

You’re missing the point. Story Mode should be STORY MODE. I know, your delicate sensibilities are offended that humans want to be entertained by video games, that we should instead, during our leisure activity, be forced to work for our fun, like in real life. We should put “time and effort” into something that should be effortless i.e. relaxation. We should bleed and sweat for pixels, because that’s what the hardcore do, so, therefore the rest of the casual masses should behave the same.

I don’t find simple button mashing very much fun or relaxing, just boring. I do find a good challenge enjoyable though, and dungeons are the only place for that. I simply do not believe that video games should be “effortless”. It is also not about being “forced to work for your fun”. I don’t feel like I’m working for anything, I feel like I’m having fun overcoming challenges. If it was all effortless and without a challenge then you’d just be mindlessly hacking away to the point you might as well be vegging out in front of a TV or something. What’s the point of it being interactive? Also, story mode doesn’t mean easy mode. Story and challenging are not opposites.

What I’m seeing is that people who don’t enjoy a good challenge are crying foul and wanting dungeons to be nerfed. You don’t see those of us who enjoy a challenge saying “The rest of the game is too easy! Make the hearts/events harder!” You can have those, most of the game is ridiculously easy. Dungeons are the only thing those of us who want a challenge have, and it’s a small part of the game. Even just dropping down the difficulty on story mode is removing a quarter of the content that we truly enjoy.

Of course, I would argue that story mode is already too easy in most cases. Your first steps into AC are going to be rough, sure. Once you figure out how dungeons work though (which should take a few hours max as people learn how to dodge/CC/stay alive) the dungeons just become really easy to do.

Stop and think about your question. Ok now can the answer be how do you know when someone will leave the World vs World map? if not think again

Well, average wait time is what I’d expect, not a 100% accurate timer. Knowing that the average wait time for Borderlands 1 is 5 hours and the average wait time for Borderlands 2 is 20 minutes… I’d queue up for Borderlands 2. Alternately, showing how many people are queued for each zone would work (1,000 people are queued up for one Borderlands and 100 people are queued up for another, for example, would be incredibly helpful in choosing a queue).

Currently there is no real way to know which zone is likely to have a shorter queue time, so it’s a random wheel of luck.

see your all STILL missing the point. FORCING someone to go into a skill tree they have no desire to use just to do dungeons is going against their own game design. HAVING to build a “balanced” character is still against their own game design. if you want to be a dps class you should be allowed to go full dps without being easily 1 shot in dungeons by normal attacks. having to bring “tanks” and “healers” into dungeons in this game where you supposed to bring “any combinations of the 8 professions” to complete a dungeon. Another complaint I have are where bosses have anywhere from 2-3 attacks that have the same charge up animation how in the hell am I supposed to know which time hes going to use the 1 shot your dead move if they all look the same and I just used my dodge up on 2 weaker attacks? Even if the 1 shot end all has a TINY differerent then I wouldnt complain as much but the LT in AC explore has killed me tons of times becuase i have used my dodge up on his weak attacks when his charge up is exactly the same for all his skills on top of the fact burns cover bosses pretty well so even seeing some of said animations are a challenge. I wont say “dumb down” or “nerf” these dungeons I would just like more target information

No, you are missing the point. “Bring any combination to the dungeon” doesn’t mean “build a terrible build and still beat anything!” Part of the game is creating a good build. If any build could do anything, then what is the point of having builds in the first place?

You want to be 100% dps? Go for it. Yes, you will get 1 shot. That’s one of the drawbacks. Every build has advantages and disadvantages.

And that all being said, we have done many dungeons in both story and explore (and especially lots of AC, which people seem to think is the hardest) and we have never once forced anyone into any spec. We also have managed to clear pretty much everything we’ve tried in a max of 2 runs, usually in less than 2-3 hours of total time. Once you know how to play the game it becomes very easy.

Elementalist downed state... why?

Probably something to do with the fact they have mist form…

Mist form used in downed state eats kitten and doest do anything other than delay the inevitable. Wow, I can float away for 3 secs at a snails pace and flop back to the ground waiting to die.

I have saved myself SO many times using mist form. In PvE you can get away from a mob that is attacking you and often it will attack someone else if there are other players around or it will just run away and you can heal yourself back up. In dungeons and WvW it’s great to get out of a bad area to somewhere that it’s easier for others to pick you up. In sPvP if you can get it off you can sometimes get somewhere safe and heal yourself up while the enemies are distracted fighting your friends.

How are Dungeons meant to be played?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Svenn.5209

Svenn.5209

The key to dungeons is learning to adapt! People want to run in and expect to stand in the back and DPS or run up and stand toe-to-toe with some mob and tank it. That isn’t how the game works. The dungeons aren’t really that hard once people learn this.

What you need to do is pay attention to what is going on. Get out of the bad (red) circles on the ground. Watch for the enemy’s tells to know when they are charging a powerful attack or something else that needs to be avoided… and DODGE.

No one has just a single role. Everyone should be contributing in multiple ways. If you are not doing more than one thing, you need to change. You can’t just stand there and dps, you can’t just sit back and heal, and you can’t step up and just take all the hits from a mob. That means you probably shouldn’t be building 100% power, precision, and crit damage on your gear, or 100% toughness/vitality. You need some balance.

So how do you do a dungeon? Well, the first thing is learning how to not die. I have yet to come across a fight that is a dps race. It’s about survival first. The most important thing for survival is DO NOT stand still. If you get aggro then you should dodge roll, kite, CC, or whatever else you can to stop yourself from taking damage. If you don’t have aggro then you still need to be moving and dodge rolling to avoid any area effects on the ground for most fights, and you should always be CCing to prevent as much damage as possible. Blinds are especially effective. EVERYONE should be doing some sort of “tanking” this way. Whatever you do though, do NOT just take the hits no matter how much toughness/health you have.

So what about healing? If you are doing the above then everyone should be able to handle themselves through avoiding damage and self heals. I am actually a water/air Elementalist because I expected healing to be very important, but in most good runs I barely healed because everyone was avoiding the damage and keeping themselves topped off. That being said, having someone who can do some extra healing never hurts, but no one ever NEEDS to be a “healer”.

Again, you need to pay attention to what is going on around you and adapt as needed. Learn when you need to dodge/run away/kite. Knowing the boss/mobs you are fighting helps a ton. That first boss in AC explorable destroyed us with his harpoon/whirlwind combo on our first run until we learned how to dodge that harpoon attack. Now once the adds are down that fight is just ridiculously easy.

I am so glad the trinity is gone.

Just like the title says, we should be able to queue for all the WvW zones at once (and get removed from all queues when we get in one). This would help a little bit to alleviate the queue time woes, as some zones are cycling faster than others and right now we can only guess which one that is. This way if I want to WvW I can just queue up for any of the 4 zons and hop in whichever one pops first. I’m not really picky on which zone I get in.

If you want to go a step further for people who want in a specific area, you can queue for all zones but set one as your preferred zone either giving priority to those people or staying in the queue for that zone if you make it in another so you can eventually switch over.

No holy trinity is one of the huge features (and the BEST feature, imo) of the game. Don’t expect to suddenly see them implementing this. The lack of a holy trinity makes this far better than any MMO out there, I think.

Also, what Sulmith Greysin said. Everyone does everything. I play an elementalist. I dps, I heal (quite a lot, actually), I even “tank” a little. It’s much nicer not having all these pre-defined class roles and being able to do whatever I want. I especially love just grabbing 4 friends and doing a dungeon, rather than going “Well, you can’t come because we already have a warrior, go roll a priest.”

Help! My interest is falling :S

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Svenn.5209

Svenn.5209

My interest is waning as well. I have four characters, three of which are in their 40’s and the other is 15. I think the lack of motivation is stemming from a few different things:

1. I like crafting things and selling things. As we all know, currently the market isn’t much of an economy, with crafted gear selling for less than the cost of the materials to make them. That drives a stake between two things I’m fond of. Either I can sell the mats and make a profit, or I can craft with them and take a loss. People say the economy will straighten out over time. I hope they’re right, because I’m not so confident.

2. Skill woes. I’m not too fond of the way you can have every weapon skill for a character by level 5 (or sooner). I’m hoping that there’ll be more to work toward later.

By level 20, I’ve pretty much got every skill I’ll ever use. By level 35-40, I have the elite skills I want. One problem here is that half the skills of any class aren’t worth putting any points into. Am I going to put 15 skill points into my thief’s elite skill that gives me venom that turns one enemy to stone for one second and has a 45 second cooldown and a casting time? Dear god, I want to burst into laughter just thinking about it.

So they’ve driven a wedge between two of my favorite activities, and after level 35, character growth is limited almost entirely to traits and gear. So I pretty much lose motivation shortly after hitting level 40. I might start a warrior soon, since I’ve seen other people using them and they seem incredibly strong, but I’m not anticipating going through the same areas again (or coming up with a decent name for the character).

1) People aren’t going to pay much money for non-max level stuff. Leveling is VERY fast and easy in this game, so people just aren’t inclined to spend much money on crafted stuff when they will out level it in a couple hours. I bet that some of the max level crafted items will sell for quite a bit.

2) There is plenty to work towards to improve your character. Traits make a huge difference. Unlocking new utility skills lets you try out a variety of builds. Unless you’ve got max level exotics there is better gear out there to get.

Outside of just pure character improvement you’ve got the personal story to complete, achievements to earn, map completion, and more. There really is no lack of things to do.

Manually joining overflow to play with friends from another server?

It says “Join in Zone Name” where “Zone Name” is the name of your current zone. You both have to be in the same zone and it only works on the person in overflow (you cannot do the “Join in” on someone NOT in overflow).

Gem Exchange as a ForEx Market?

I have tried, but the prices aren’t fluctuating much. Also, the value for converting gems to gold and gold to gems are not the same (Convert 1g to gems and convert those gems back to gold immediately and you’ll likely have like 80s). Every 30-60 minutes I pop open the conversion window and check prices. There just hasn’t been enough of a swing in pricing to make any kind of profit with this yet.

“Icon Stating You Are Holding Supplies”
At the top of the screen is a little barrel looking icon with a number next to it. That’s how many supplies you have on you.

“Gear that you can buy with karma for pvp @ 80 would also be nice since the required amount of badges for the gear you get is insane.”
Since there is no WvW specific gear, doesn’t this already exist? There’s a ton of karma gear available everywhere that works for WvW.

Wait, you play in full games? I feel like I get a full game every now and then, and then after 1 match everyone leaves and it’s anywhere from 4-6 players per team.

Lifetime Survivor Not Working

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Svenn.5209

My Lifetime Survivor achievement just never updates, it’s been stuck at 0 forever. I thought maybe it was broken like the Monthly Survivor (resets on changing zones/logging) but I spent hours in a zone without dying earning hundreds of thousands of experience and that didn’t work. I thought that maybe I had to be on a character that had no deaths, so I started a new character but this still didn’t budge.

Is there something else I am missing or is this achievement just broken?

spvp: any chance for "join as group"?

Pandemoniac, this is already possible. You can join friends, it’s just more of a pain.

I really want to play more sPvP but I’m usually only with 1-2 friends and we don’t want to commit the time for a full tournament. We just want to hop in together and have fun. All I really want is for the “Play Now” button to send everyone in my party to the same game, rather than having to take the extra steps to play together.

While leveling up PVP ranks, what upgrade options do you have to make?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Svenn.5209

Svenn.5209

There isn’t “better” gear. Everyone has the same options for gear stats from the start. All of the PvP gear is cosmetic upgrades only. If you want to change gear, go to the vendors in Mists and get new runes and a new amulet to customize yourself.

Structured PvP is specifically structured so that everyone is equal and no one has an advantage because they’ve played longer or something. World vs World uses your regularly obtained gear, so if you want a PvP experience where you can get better gear that is your best bet.

I have a really big problem with getting my level dumbed down

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Svenn.5209

Svenn.5209

As a level 80 in a lower level zone I feel way powerful. Having all the extra traits and better gear does make a pretty large difference while down-leveled. I can often kill many enemies in just 2-3 basic (autoattack) hits in zones under level 25. Even while down-leveled the dungeons are much easier when you have the better traits and gear at higher levels.

So yeah, you can still feel powerful even with the down-leveling. That doesn’t mean you’ll be able to blow through an area taking no damage and killing dozens of enemies with each swing. The big point you are missing here is that this system means that you will never completely out-level an area. That means instead of having 3-5 zones in which you can play at any time that are challenging and rewarding, you have an increasingly large pool as you level until the entire game is opened to you and you can go ANYWHERE and be challenged and rewarded.

Help! My interest is falling :S

So, you rushed through all the content and now you are wondering why you are running out of things to do? What did you expect?

The “end-game” is cosmetic… finding legendary items and cool cosmetic armor. Of course, this game isn’t about “end-game”. It wasn’t built around the idea of rushing to max level quickly to get to the “real” game. It’s about enjoying the ride, exploring, and just having fun. It is pretty refreshing to just be able to take my time and enjoy the game rather than feeling like I’m “falling behind” or “almost to the good part”.

As for what to do, PvP and WvW are what will keep me playing for months/years. Dungeons, finding legendaries, and alts are what will keep me playing PvE for quite some time. I am not quite sure what else you were expecting.

Map Completion Rewards Scaling?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Svenn.5209

Svenn.5209

I am not 100% sure, but I think the rewards are always of the level of the area itself. If they scaled to your level then no one would 100% a zone until they hit 80 so they could get a bunch of free high level gear.

PvP: y u no die?!

The downed system is one of my absolute favorite parts of the game. I love it, and I especially love it in PvP. You don’t HAVE to execute someone when they are down. They do very minor amounts of damage while downed, and by occasionally interrupting their attempts at getting up you can effectively keep them out of the game by keeping them alive longer.

There is definitely strategy in how to deal with downed players. Yeah, it can be annoying when someone teleports away while you are executing them but there are plenty of ways to deal with that.

grebber, you can play with people on any server. Currently the only ways to do this are to join an overflow together (the overflow is a combination of all servers, not just yours) or to enter a dungeon together.

Also, if you are in a different overflow you can just right click on the other party member’s portrait and do “Join in” and it’ll take you to their overflow directly. You are never locked out from playing with friends.
