It’ll be interesting to see how those new transfers pan out for HoD. At first glance, it seems they pulled in more than enough people to shatter the balance and might possibly have gained enough population for a T6 push. But it’s difficult to tell how many of those players are dedicated WvW transfers or just the mad dash of PvE players trying out the new patch. And with this week being a holiday/spring break for many of us, we won’t really get a good idea of anyone’s real post-patch strength for another week or so.

Either way, HoD needs to learn a few more tricks besides golem rushes if they want to leave this tier.

Henge is starting to look like Kaineng after all those transfers. Crazy zergs across multiple maps. o_O

Hey folks, just curious about this other aspect of WvW. War isn’t cheap. Siege equipment needs to be bought. Structures need upgrading. Armor and weapons need repairing.

I’d like to know how players and guilds fund their WvW efforts. On an individual scale, I try to stow money away before hitting the Mists. I would have 50 silver with me. Any income I get at the end of the night, I use half of that towards siege equipment and the other half goes to my bank. This way, I would have a stock of siege equipment just in case someone forgot siege.

But on the larger scale, the structure upgrades intrigues me. Is this a single player who shell out their personal dough on the fortifications, merchants and waypoint upgrades? A fully upgraded keep costs about 3 gold. If an individual does this, are they mentally prepared to lose that keep when the zerg comes rolling in?

I also heard that some commanders get donations (siege equipment and gold) from wealthy players. That’s great, but it’s sporadic. A commander might splurge that cash on upgrades, but it would be demoralizing if the enemy takes it.

With that said, do guilds fund structure upgrades? And if so, how do you collect funds?

All I do is WvW (and some sPvP, but that doesn’t count towards wealth). I keep 15 of each blueprint type, except golems, stocked on each of my characters at all times and usually contribute at least one print during each siege/defense I’m a part of. I also purchase a couple of upgrades per night, including the occasional waypoint or fortified walls. I don’t use real cash, farm, or zergball. WvW pays for itself and I’ve still managed to maintain about 50-60 gold total in the bank, which I save for fun stuff like cow finishers, blue transmutation stones, character slots, etc.

This part varies from person to person, but what I find works for me is:
Buy basic salvage kits, salvage whites/blues, sell greens to vendors, TP all yellows/exotics, TP/vendor all Tier 1-5 crafting materials as I get full, and TP all loot bags and salvageable junk items (scrap metals/leather straps/etc). Those heavy loot bags (3s each on the TP) and valuable scrap metals (1s each) are a huge and often over-looked income source. I also make my own consumables (www.gw2spidy.com is an AMAZING resource for determining if crafting or buying materials is cheaper… for each step of the crafting process!).

Regarding upgrades, I find that a lot of players who are losing money in WvW are actually just trying to be helpful and end up simply trying to shoulder too much of the responsibility on their own. Any upgrade you buy or print you use will eventually be lost, so you need to encourage everyone to take part and pull their own weight. When I buy an upgrade, I usually throw out a quick /t “just started walls at hills… who’s got the upgrade for bay?” or “I can drop the first ram… who’s got next?” More often than not, other people are willing to pitch in if they know other people are pitching in as well. Be vocal and communicate clearly… not only does it set a good example, but it also prevents people from wasting their valuable prints. I used to see a lot of commanders saying, “I need 2 rams up asap!” and 6 different people would all simultaneously throw down build sites. If it’s clear ahead of time how many are needed and who’s putting the sites down, everyone saves money in the long run.

And one final thing: Some players out there (especially commanders) do have a hard time sharing responsibility and will throw down tons of their own siege/upgrades every day. If you’re part of their group, please send ‘em some silver, a gold or two, or some unused blueprints. They won’t ask for it, but it will definitely be appreciated. You don’t have even to be wealthy… just give what you can afford and think of it as a tip in return for all the free xp/karma/silver you earn just by running with them.

Can I speak out against the fight club? Honestly, the whole thing was disastrous for our server (NSP). A big majority of our commanders and a good chunk of NSP players were there. At the exact moment the fight club was underway, GoM ruthlessly assaulted our areas in EB with a massive zerg and ninjaed our keep with a ton of golems. Our entire side of EB was blue. HoD was untouched. On NSP, we have limited commanders and our WvW player count is much lower then GoM, so every fighter on the ground counts. Those of us who avoided the fight club were desperately trying to defend our keep, but it was overrun by the force of GoM’s offensive and it set us back from any hope of regaining the lead. Not to mention breaking NSP morale. If the darn fight club hadn’t been going on, we might have held them off. I’m not trying to say that GoM deliberately staged the fight club in order to distract our commanders and pull off their assault, but that was the end result. Either there needs to be a multi-server wide truce during the fight club, or we should not get sucked into having them. Either way, I vote no fight club. Wet blankets FTW!

That’s just something you’ll have to work out with your server. Fight club is a nice break from the monotony of WvW and matches are usually decided by that point in the week anyways, but it’s completely optional. I personally skipped out on fight night during primetime this week because the score was so close and I wanted to help keep it that way. Once the maps settled down a bit, I was able to get a couple of duels in before going off to bed.

Use your best judgement whether or not you should participate, but don’t try to chalk it up to some big GoM diversionary tactic. We’re far too sneaky for that. :P

T6 has had its moments, but I definitely miss our encounters with [ASH] and [RH]. You guys are a lot better than most of the guilds T6 has fronted. And we’ve been working hard at improving our small group skirmishes and tactics, hopefully we’ll be able to fight you guys again sometime soon.

We definitely miss playing cat-and-mouse with [MoRt]. NSP’s borderlands are always either swarming with zergs or completely vacant, and that’s no fun. But, we’ve been holding our own so far. With a little luck, we might even get a chance to crack T6 soon. Keep that red map warmed up for us.

Don’t count HoD out. They’ve more than proven themselves as quality opponents in this tier. This week was probably SF’s last chance to break out before the ratings net will snag them and start dragging them down again, but HoD came to play and put an end to any chance of that happening.

Hopefully, ANet can figure out how to fix the T8 trap. There’s already been tons of good suggestions posted (my vote is for the ratings ceiling/floor). But until then, you guys will be stuck with SF for a while. T7 ain’t budging.

Since my last post in the thread I’ve been running p/p with s/d swap in spvp and it’s actually pretty good. I’m usually top score on my team, often the game as a whole. I don’t feel as strong as I do on my ele, but this is essentially my first time playing a thief, so I just don’t have the experience to really dominate. But it’s strong and has a lot of potential. I think once I master the general thief play this build will be on par with any other thief build.

Glad you’re enjoying it. P/P has a different tempo to it, especially if you’re speccing evasion over stealth. But once you get into the swing of it, it’s a really tough build to take down.

I think HoD’s rampage across our borderland was meant to be a rallying call for their server. They had an amazing turnout and it sounds like they all had a blast, so cheers to them for that. High morale can easily snowball into something spectacular (GoM’s comeback victory last week, for example). But choosing to provoke a 1v2 against yourself from 3rd place with SF nearing striking distance… well, let’s just say that the road to T8 is a very slippery slope.

Great dps, excellent burst, high survivability from almost limitless dodging, multiple stunbreakers, and incredible mobility to either tackle runners or escape combat. It is a bit like playing an orchestra on your keyboard at break-neck speed, though, so if twitch-play isn’t your style, you’d be better off trying a different weapon set. But if you do enjoy that kind of stuff, you’ll really like this weapon set.

Just don’t go in and start spamming Unload. Headshot will win you more battles than pure damage will.

Could you share your build? Certain aspects of the thief interest me but I’m not a fan of melee so I haven’t found a build that works for me yet. I haven’t tried p/p before but now I’m considering it, so it’d be nice to know about a viable build.

Sure, but I’m constantly swapping out utilities on the fly depending on the situation. My traits/armor/weapons always stay the same, though.

I run in a small, organized roaming group. My build is based around mobility, so I went with Centaur runes to give the whole group perma-swiftness. For group fights, I usually draw fire (tanking through evasion!) and set up bursts on primary targets. During sieges, my job is to scout/intercept (Ambush Trap is a good “alarm system”). I’ll swap in Roll for Initiative against cc-heavy groups and Scorpion Wire for slower sieges with many embedded defenders. For duels, I’ll add more traps and Basilisk Venom to the skill bar.

The main weakness of this build is that you absolutely can’t stop moving. There’s just enough toughness/vitality in there to survive a sneak attack from a glass cannon thief, but you get melted quick if you ever sit still against a group. That makes spiking and rezzing very dangerous, but thankfully you can still achieve a bit of stealth by combo’ing Pistol5 + Dagger2 if the fight gets too hot and you really need to land that clutch spike.

The sPvP version of this build is a bit different because the customization is so dumbed down and there’s no access to consumables (goodbye, 40% endurance regen!). I drop the signet for Roll for Initiative right off the bat since I’m way squishier than in WvW. Still pretty effective, though. Just have to watch out for reflects/retaliation.

Stealth just doesn’t synergize with P/P all that well because the weapon set is based around damage and interrupts, yet the pistol stealth attack is condition damage. That leaves escaping a fight as your only real reason to carry any stealth on your bar, but there’s plenty of other skills you can use to achieve that same goal with less cooldown and more flexibility.

I think Siegerazer should be tied to the outmanned buff. Not outmanned, can’t trigger him. And if you lose the buff while he’s already active, simply make him de-spawn at the next successful defense timer.

Of course, I’d rather do away with that PvE crap altogether and just have the outmanned buff increase the damage and life of your siege equipment.

Attacking our keep while we were siege locked was a horrible decision. It has no bearing to who laid the siege, conspiracy theories, tinfol hats or whatever. Its just illustrative of horrible tactical planning. We had to use golems to do anything on EB which severely handicapped us on that map. I hope that screen shot was worth it. Anyone with any sort of actual tactical awareness would have taken all of EB EXCEPT NSP’s keep.

I’m glad your keep got reset. I’d rather have a fair fight against you guys than take advantage of your server trolls crippling you.

GoM stepped-up during this match up, while NSP stayed a PvE server.

I love being on NSP I just hate hearing excuses, but its not over yet we haven’t lost and I for one don’t wanna play for 2nd like a certain server. You know who you AR.

+1 for being a good sport about things. The lag and connection issues were awful for everyone, but this match has still been amazing. The atmosphere over here on GoM has been absolutely electric all week.
