No tank, No healer, No trinity

First there are two different terms.

Trinity and Holy Trinity.

Trinity refers to the different aspects of combat – dealing damage, healing damage/mitigating damage, crowd control/support.

In old EQ it was actually 5 aspects – damage mitigation and healing were split and so were crowd control and support.

Holy Trinity refers to the single role a class executes in combat- tank, dps, heal. During an encounter the tank won’t start healing or the dps will become a tank – spec changes generally occur out of combat.

With the advent of WoW and games inspired by WoW, holy trinity and trinity became synonyms for many (most) people.

But Colin uses the original definitions for trinity and holy trinity.

People can say “look many (most) use them as synonyms, so why is Colin causing confusion”?

But how does one describe the aspects of combat without the term trinity?

Colin reddit post is pretty clear.

It works the way we intended: you can play control, support, and DPS actively. To folks who prefer to define by the holy trinity, Gw2 doesn’t force you to pick one of the three from heal, tank, or DPS and only do that – it blends a mix depending on your build and allows you to actively swap roles or soft play between roles. Our goal was to remove the forced singular role per you’re locked into, people often mistake this as saying gw2 has no trinity elements, that isn’t true – we just don’t believe in a forced role per for Gw2 for the reasons I covered in the live stream.

Notice how Colin clearly makes the distinction between Holy Trinity (role lock) and Trinity Elements (different aspects of combat).

But we all know that for PvE it mostly devolved into buff stacking, perfectly timed dodges (and other active defense) and max DPS.

If all of the aspects of trinity (dealing damage, healing/mitigating damage and CC/support) are to be present and have similar importance, encounters need to be redesigned.

Again Colin reddit post is clear.

It’s that the mobs and encounters we have provided so far very rarely allow/encourage you to make use of the combat system as intended.

Other than people thinking Trinity and Holy Trinity are the same thing, there is no room to misunderstand what Colin said.

Support and Damage mitigation are kind of the same thing. Unless you mean vitality/toughness as damage mitigation and Protection, Vigor, Reflect, Aegis, etc as Support.

But ya I hope that’s the direction they go toward. DPS and Support are already important in the game, but the fact that content isn’t that challenging mean that a lot of support is unnecessary. We use reflect, aegis, blind, but we rarely try to find a group with protection, vigor, weakness, etc.

I prefer active defense than defensive stats or healing. But that doesn’t matter that they can’t work together. Harder content that need both active defense to protect yourself against big burst and healing to survive quick ‘’auto-attack’’ would bring diversity in fight.

Anet already seem to make CC more important with the break bar. We’ll see. And there is other gameplay element that are not use currently. They could make boon rip important for some fight. For now there is only one fight that kind of need it, but you can just use reflect or destroy the turret.

For me, that’s what hard content should do. Force you to bring a bit of everything the game as to offer in order to succeed.

I try to swap between both depending on the map. Map with small node I prefer Communal defense because when I go in a fight a second block for my team in middle is usually better. But in map with larger node like Forest, the smaller radius of CD make it less efficient.

Wait. It’s just me that don’t understand the same thing as the OP. They said, that they never intended to have no healer, just that you don’t need to be or need to have one.

They never said that they never intended to not having trinity. It seem to me that challenging group content will be hard enough that 5 zerker probably won’t be able to complete by temselves since it’s gonna be too hard. You gonna need a mix of support and healing might be something more important.

It doesn’t seem at all like trinity and it sound awesome. If they can pull it off.

Lol, let’s be realistic here….this is a grouping tool in a video game not a contract for service. The description just gives you an idea of what kind of group is being formed, but it would be foolish to expect it to be exactly as described.

PUGs are dynamic in nature. Everything depends on what the majority of the group is feeling at that particular point in time, and often the 5 players have very different attitudes and play styles. And of course, anyone in the group can edit the posting to say whatever they want.

True. But I find it ridiculous to kick someone that is not level 80 or full zerker if that wasn’t asked in the description.

Minimum desired Stats

Thaddeus.4891

face palm If traits were the issue, I wouldn’t be asking about the stats, as I could easily min/max around a central theme. If I was after meta I would just go all Zerks and run Medi for the obvious DPS potential. Saying “take the amount you absolutely need” without giving any guide lines on how to establish that is like saying “we need a gallon of Lava, btw don’t kill yourself”. That logistical detail on how not to get killed would be rather critical to planning such an operation.

So lets me this easier…..

So if 2200 armor isn’t tanky, and 3100 is super tanky, is 2800 armor “tanky enough” if I was shooting for a tanky character setup?

I don’t know what to tell you man. You are asking subjective numbers and you could have 100 different answer from 100 different person. I can tell you what is mine.

The minimum armor is far than enough for a character that you know. For a new character I used to take 2-3 pieces of knight armor or something like that just to give me some room for error. But took those off as soon as I got more comfortable with the profession. But even then it will vary depending on which profession. On my mesmer I went directly full zerker, on my warrior I had 2 pieces of knight, but on my elementalist I had 3-4 pieces of valkyrie and some defensive trait and skill since I had a really hard time when I first started playing it.

If your goal isn’t to train before you go full zerker (or assassins/sinister/rampager), then maybe someothing like Zealot could be a better choice for you. It’s easy to make a good support guardian now with the new trait. That’s what I play currently because i’m bored with the traditional meta these days. I take a Zeal/Virtue/Honor with Hammer & Mace/Focus with Zerker gear. But with the decent amount of healing of this build Zealot could be a good amount of fun for you.

It’s all subjective and personnal. Sorry that we can’t give you an specific answer.

Minimum desired Stats

Thaddeus.4891

There are discernible thresholds behind some of the stats. For instance, why is 5k DPS bad, but 12K DPS good? If 15K DPS is optimal, how much lower can it go before its no longer effective? How much armor is needed to properly mitigate certain types of attacks?

My problem is that I don’t the resources to systematically do testing, nor do I have enough understanding of how the new down leveling works (which has a huge impact at the moment) to interpret those results properly.

How much armor is needed to properly mitigate certain types of attacks? Zero. You need a lot of armor to mitigate properly attacks in PvE. Just to give you an exemple. A guardian will have 2271 Armor at level 80 with no additional toughness. You would need around 1170 additional toughness to protect yourself as much as protection would. And a guardian can get perma protection for himself, but also his team.

Even worst. Aegis, Blind, reflect, dodge, block, invulnerable. They all block 100% of the attack. Something that armor can’t do. In PvP you can’t really predict all incoming damage and you can’t really keep perma protection, so Armor make sense. For PvE, not really since there is other option superior.

For your damage. There is not a acceptable threshold other than what you think is good. For someone the only damage acceptable is the optimal. For other they don’t really care. DPS have wait too many variable too. You can have most optimal build and gear, but do less dps than someone with another build. Potion, foods, rotation, team buffing, etc All those thing are so important. Build itself is only a small portion of your DPS. That is why kicking someone for being the ’’wrong’’ profession or not playing the exact meta is just stupid.

Like I said before. Take the amount of defensive attribute you absolutely need and put the rest into offensive stats.

Thaddeus.4891

I’m not sure to understand what you are asking for, it can be several thing.

There is no threshold for vitality and toughness other than your own. You want an little of these as you can since you only improve your survivability. If you can play comfortably wihtout any of those, great. If you need some, take what you need, but not more. There is people trying to find the good balance between vitality and toughness. The goal here is to know what is the ratio of vitality vs toughness you should have to get the most bang for your buck. I don’t know if you are asking for that, but I think there is a lot of different school of thought on that issue.

There is also no threshold for Power and Ferocity. You want as much as you can get. For precision, you don’t want to get higher than 100%, but this is only an issue in group that buff each other and not for all profession. Any threshold for those stats would be arbitrary. But again, there is research done on the golden ratio between Power, Precision and Ferocity to maximize your dmg for the same amount of points.

Same go with Condition damage. The more you can get, the better. But it usually come at the expense of another stats, so you need to prioritize. I guess you could try to find the best balance between power and condition for a hybrid build, but I don’t there is much research into that, since condition isn’t that popular in PvE.

It seem that you ask a question about personal preference, not an objective one.

But right now, we are kind of in-between two system where we level up, but don’t get anything. It doesn’t make sense for anet to put money are resource on a new transition system.

Guardian base hp is 10 900, while Warrior is 18 500, so the difference is more around 60% and not 100%. You need some vitality on your warrior to reach 23k hp.

The difference is that Warrior almost have zero active defense. You have your dodge, an evade with GS and some vigor when trait or with the right skill. So most of your defense come from your big HP pool.

The guardian is at the other extreme and is the king of active defense. Aegis, Blind, Reflect, Condition Removal, Invulnerable, Block, etc The Guardian even with the DPS oriented meta build is packed with a lot of active defense and most of those not only help yourself survive, but also help the team.

Personally, I have a far easier time to survive with my guardian in dungeon, than my Warrior.

You can put stuff on the Mystic Forge, but if you want a specific precursor you are better buying it on the TP. The Forge work better with very large quantity when you gonna tend toward the average. If you just want 1 precursor it’s all about luck. But you could do like me and wait for the expansion when you gonna be able to complete a collection to get precursor.

Ya that would be perfect. Not the first time someone propose something like that. I think that would be perfect. That way, a party leader would still need 2 other people to kick someone so he can’t abuse the system and kick everybody at the end of the dungeon and sell it. Well tbh the new system was created to be balanced right for a party of 5. Anet isn’t against selling path, but they don’t support it in-game and don’t design their system for it. Selling path is at our own risk from day one and it will continue like that. The Horrible, Awful, Tragic Death of My Build

Thaddeus.4891

Lol. My Ele is three years old and I’ve had my current gear setup for almost 2 years and never had a problem until this update. I feel that if anyone has mastered the profession it’s someone who can regularly and quickly retrait and switch points around for ultimate versatility and customization. The update screwed it, no doubt about it.

You had no problem because you had plenty of defensive stats from you gear. Good players don’t want defensive stats, ordinary player can survive without defensive stats but prefer having some as a cushion, bad players NEED defensive stats to survive PvE, which is your case.

PvE is so freaking easy, that if you need defensive stats to survive, that should be your clue for not getting expensive ascended gear.

Anyway. All MMO need to change stuff up so the game can grow and get better. Removing stats from trait is something that needed to be done. There is mostly two way they could have done it. Like they did, which is easier to balance or allowing us to distribute our stats independently from traits. A bit like Diablo 2. But that method is harder to balance.

Each method have some pro and cons, but any change they will do to the game will kitten off some person and be applaud by other. Some change I don’t like, but I know other people that like it, while some changes I love, and some of my friends can’t stand.

Blezebu what do you mean with " all you need to pick is which stats to use for your build." ?

PvP is divided into two.

sPvP and WvW. In WvW you need to gear up like in PvE (you can use the same gear, but usually you want different gear for different need.).

In sPvP, it’s just an amulet that you choose and all are unlocked since level 10 I think. The moment you get into PvP you have access to everything. Except some special runes, sigils and amulets that you can unlock for a couple of gold, but almost no popular build use those unlockable items.

Just a couple of questions :)

in Players Helping Players

Thaddeus.4891

1) For PvE Zerker is usually the best gear possible, but there is some exception. For exemple Mesmer and Engineer are better with a mix of Assassin and Zerker, while Sinister is a good alternative with the last update. For PvP, this vary too much to pinpoint one gear. But whatever which type of stats you want Ascended is the best quality, followed by exotic.

2) Exotic is easy to come by. There is a lot of different place to get it and it’s cheap. Ascended you usually need to craft the weapon/armor, while you can get trinket from (guild mission, laurels, fractals, etc). Exotic is fine for pretty much all the game. Ascended give you a nice bonus (especially trinkets and weapons), but are not needed outside of high level fractals.

3) Ascended Armor and Weapons can be a grind depending on how many of those you want and how much you play. Otherwise most of the grind is for your looks and if you have a lot of alts. All grind is optional, you could pretty much experience all the game with a normal exotic gear that took you a couple of hours to get. You won’t be the best you can be, but it will work just fine.

4) As you get higher and know more about the game you will know how to get more gold. When I play casually, I can make between 2 and 7 gold per hours. When I want gold I can go as high as 10-20 gold per hour. If you start playing the TP you can make even more. 5-10 gold per hour is what most player can reach.

5) You can craft your legendary with different gift. Look at the wiki for more information. Right now, there is just the precursor (the exotic weapon that serve as base for your legendary) that is almost always bought on the TP since it’s a gamble to get one from the Mystic Forge (Nickname Mystic Toilet because you can flush all your savings in it if you are unlucky). But with the expansion, you will be able to collect different items to get your precursor (we only have limited information on the process for now).

Retreat is usually the best choice. SY is more of a specific niche skill.

In PvE group I always use Retreat for the Aegis on demand. The switfness is just a nice addition. This skill is almost always on my bar.

In PvE Solo. I also usually take Retreat, but SY is nice when you need either vigor, fury or a break stun for specific situation. But with feel my wrath, SY is less necessary. For exemple, in Fractal against the Shaman I like SY for the added vigor so I can keep the attention of the boss on me longer and dodge the arrow. When I solo wall Lupi with WoR, I pop SY for the fury, etc.

On a bunker guardian, I prefer SY, but I know that some like retreat. I find that aegis useless in group fight since too much stuff is thrown at you.

But i really dont have the time for it. This just seemed like a no brainer to me. Having major in Zerker and a minor in Condi per se. Its also super cheap as it isnt the meta.

Well several people already did some testing, but it’s early still. Other people may come with different build are setup or different result that could change the final answer. But I doubt the answer will be extremely different than what we have now. Zerker gear + condition rune is a bad idea. They changed how condition work. You need a good amount of condition before the damage is worth it now. You can either go full power, full damage or balanced hybrid, but full power with a little condition is a waste.

Only Mesmer and Engineer have a interesting advantage of using assassin over zerker. For most other profession assassin and zerker are pretty close with some build being a little bit better in zerker, while other are better in assassin. But the difference is small and the balance will change depending on your party, food, infusion, etc. It’s so sensitive to so many viable that you can’t really have a definitive answer. It will change too much in each situation. So most people just play zerker. It easier that way.

its really not a joke when i say that i hit HARD and it seems like the extra 3k ticks are just bonus damage that i otherwise wouldnt have had.

14-20% less dps is not marginal. True open world and solo is different than dungeon in party and the difference between both will be smaller, but it don’t seem that condi guardian is able to close the gap completely (compare to other profession like engie and warrior). But I can be wrong on that point, we’ll have to see the actual number for solo.

Zeal trait line

Like Jerus said. Zeal is the symbol line. The real question is :

Anet Why did you put a sceptre trait in the Symbol line?

Scepter trait has been always in Zeal trait line – “10% more dmg with scepter” now it’s “gain might when Justice passive triggers”.

I know. But it doesn’t make sense that a major trait push toward scepter, while the minor boost symbol. The scepter is one of the few main-hand weapon that don’t use symbol.

Healing power have a huge impact on pvp. Build like bunker and brawler usually use a good amount of healing power (celestial or cleric).

Can anyone tell me whats different on guards?

PvE
- GS is pretty much at the same place it used to be.
- Mace replaced Sword as the main secondary weapon. Most build have one now.
- Sword lost it’s place, but like Mace before, it’s not useless. A GS Sw/T build is around 10% less dps than a GS M/T build.
- Hammer is still less good than GS + M/T, but you lose less dps from it than you used to. Now an Hammer + M/T build is around 5% less dps than a GS + M/T build.
- Scepter build are still the highest dps against large/slow bosses.

Most build use either Z/R/V or Z/R/H for traits. Z/H/V is decent on Hammer, but still a dps lost.

For PvP

GS replace Hammer as the most popular weapon on medi build mostly because you can’t have Glacial Hearts with Absolute Resolution and the GS trait now also reduce cooldown.

For now Medi build still are the most popular, but I saw some really nasty dps from burning guardian. We’ll see what will happen with that.

You mean the most important stat in the game? Yeah, my level 21 in greens HITS HARDER than my fully geared level 80. Whether or not it is “limited to the power and armor” that is still a huge deal.

I didn’t said it wasn’t a big deal. I’m just saying that whatever they kitten up, it seem limited to power and armor.

I’m not selfish, those are your words. I accept and I am grateful for the comments. However, I say what I think and give my opinion. That can you accept it or not.

Between Necro and ele. max 5% lower than Ele staff

That’s not an opinion. That’s just wrong facts with made up numbers.

I do not share this opinion. Have in previous posts, wrote that I use sword / sword. Second, choices between Focus or Pistol. Greatsword for some fractals. That mesmer build is Meta PvE build, with a few very small changes and full Berserker. The DPS is normal high, not Warrior or Ele DPS. Between Necro and ele. max 5% lower than Ele staff

Do as you please man. Jesus I hate this kind of kitten. You come in the fractal and dungeon subforum to ask what is wrong with your build, we answer and you go all defensive about it. That build ain’t meta, you have 1 bad weapons, you have 1 wrong trait line (except if you swap for focus), you miss a crucial dps trait (which need 2 other utility skill). Once you change that, then you will be able to say, my build is the meta with some very small changes. Anyway, what do we all know here on the dungeon forums.

Mesmer dps is 5% lower than staff Elementalist. Thanks for the laugh.

Eh, I just bought about 200 of the gloves, they’re not salvageable, RIP to my Karma. LOL

You need to put them in the Mystic forge to get some salvageable stuff.

Does anyone ever use Box of Nails?

in Engineer

I usually use it in two situation.

1) When someone chase me, I drop it to cripple them and allow me to flee.

2) When I’m fighting on a small node. I usually run in circle when fighting and the cripple allow me to either slow down enough a melee enemies so he have a hard time landing his big attack and give me more time to aim my cc right.

Mesmer can be an asset in fast runs. Damage is properly balanced (not too high and surely not too low) and you can do a lot with the Mesmer. It’s pretty slow class, which can sometimes be a disadvantage. Greatsword, is very helpful in some Fractals, on the correct distance (not close). Sword / sword is best for Mesmer, that is what I think, great DPS, is fast and has set the fastest clone-spell , which is very useful . Plus, have nice looks

You asked for advice. A couple of good dungeon runner answered you already and told you that you are wrong. You build isn’t bad, but it’s not really great either.

Frankly, I have no idea what is the current DPS position for the Mesmer, but before the patch it at the bottom of the barrel next to the necro. Additionally, the Mesmer can have a really hard time maintaining his rather low dps because 3 phantasms can be hard to summon quick and maintain.

Greatsword is one of the worst PvE weapon for the Mesmer. Personnally, I won’t kick someone using one (except if I asked for experienced), but I’ll laugh a little at his expense with my guildmate that’s for sure.

You also lack Harmonious Mantra, which is a huge boost to your damage. You would also be better off with the line illusions rather than Inspiration if you don’t use a focus.

It’s a correct open world PvE build that you can bring in dungeon if you want, but don’t join zerker or experienced run and you should be fine.

I don’t really get that discussion. Now what, engineer is too precious to participate with the hammer. You need it to complete the dungeon. If we have 3 people alternating for the Hammer already then fine, but otherwise every profession is better off without the hammer, the engineer is no special.
