GW2 community nature

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

TheAngryLuddite.1834

People who enjoy the game are playing the game, and not wasting time on forums. You can find people complaining about anything on the Internet, but you will hardly find people talking about the good stuff… because they don’t need to waste their time doing so.

Pretty much on point.

I’ve kittened and moaned here a few times, for sure.

The biggest concern I see with the community nature at the moment is the elitist tendencies. That just seems to be a byproduct of endgame content, although it’s not like it’s everyone. I get a few jerks in a dungeon group about 1 out of 6 times. The rest are pleasant, and when the run gets rough, people work together to progress and generally seem to leave with positive impressions of one another.

The reddit thread linking to the WOW thread that someone linked on this forum was quite good.

If ANet could figure out a way to encourage a positive attitude for endgame content through gameplay mechanics (as they did in early game mechanics), that would be nice, but it’s hard to say what exactly that would be.

It’s all a pretty difficult juggling act at this point for them, I’m sure. As players, we can just do our best to be friendly and understanding in groups, instead of calling the rest of the group NOOBCAKES (while congratulating ourselves for being PRO).

Of course, some will do that, and some won’t.

So I’m a carebear – shoot me.

Uncategorized Fractal harpy knockback

TheAngryLuddite.1834

Really, I think the best solution would be to just make the red circles more visible for this fractal – maybe the circle is shown off the terrain, in the air? Not sure how difficult that would be from a programming standpoint, but it would make the fractal less frustrating to run, similar to how they edited the Swamp fractal.

The knockback is annoying and tedious, but it’s not terribly hard to avoid when you can see the circles.

DR? (Diminished Returns)

Robert Hrouda.1327:

For now DR is hitting parked characters who you don’t do anything else with but that specific thing. To avoid being hit by this, whether it is intentional functionality or a bug, do some other stuff on that character.
I wish we didn’t have to have the system, but when exploits arise players abuse them, so we have to have something. We’ll continue to evaluate its functionality and fine tune it.

So… how does this affect Fractals?

[EDIT]

My question above was answered two months ago, I just discovered… RH has replied that DR does not affect Fractals.

Fractal loot nerfed?

TheAngryLuddite.1834

“RNG is RNG” as they say.

You’re likely just having a bad string of luck. The Devs don’t make ‘Stealth Nerfs’ apparently, so if there was a nerf to the loot, it would be in the patch notes.

Why all the hate on thieves?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

Sheesh. I’m a warrior, and while I’m happy to no longer experience the class discrimination I found in GW1 as a warrior, it’s dismaying to see other classes get the same treatment in GW2.

Heck, I recently met an Engie saying the same thing – how he was straight up kicked from a Fractal simply by virtue of his class.

When GW2 got started, I marveled at the fact there really was no class discrimination, and each class was useful. I guess that’s the penance of the endgame content…

As soon as the going gets slightly rough, rather than working constructively to get around the problem, some groups start playing the Blame Game and shout at each other for being Bad – and of course, it’s never even partially their fault at all.

Those groups aren’t fun. I’d rather run a dungeon with a good-natured ‘undesirable’ class any day of a week, than a bunch of players telling other people they’re playing their class wrong – or the wrong class altogether.

Seems like some folks here should give this thread a read: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/About-elitism-in-MMOs/first

Do you identify dyes?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

The collector in me deems I identify each and every dye I find. They’re about a 1/3 the price of a rare right now (or glob of ecto), and as those drop more often than dye for me now since pretty much all I’m doing is fractals, the $ loss doesn’t feel like a huge deal.

I mean, even if I get a rare or exotic dye, I’ll use it instead of selling it, unless I already have it.

Something I miss from GW1.

The Chaos Axe – or Glow Stick of Spiky Death – gosh, that thing looked awesome. I guess it wouldn’t work the same in GW2 though, since the glow effect changed depending on what you dyed it, and you can’t dye weapons in GW2.

Infused Amulet

in Crafting

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

I’d be surprised if you couldn’t infuse amulets.

Even though back pieces and rings have different infusion recipes, first thing to try would probably be the ring infusion recipe once you get your amulet. I’d be really surprised if they made you infuse it with 250 ectos, like the back piece – that would just be a bit ludicrous, considering that’s a whole lot of dungeon grinding, or about 100g right now. If they change the recipe from the ring infusion, I’m thinking they’d just add another tier of Mist Residue drops or whatever above Shards, and have that factor in.

Got about seven more days till I can give it a shot…

About elitism in MMOs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

That was a surprisingly endearing read and moving thread.

I’ve noticed the atmosphere of friendliness – initially so stunningly inherent – in GW2 diminish a bit. Mostly in the Fractals, as the ‘softcore’ diminish, and a focus is put on increasing difficulty and the best of the best sifting together, and knowing all the specific tricks to each fractal.

I despise bullies, and tend to speak out against jerk players who call everyone in the group (except them) noobs, no matter how they perform (or don’t perform). Unfortunately, that just turns the wrath on yourself in most cases.

A good rule of thumb: if things get tough, don’t be a jerk – instead look for a constructive way to solve the issue you’re having.

Better times for everyone, all around.

Does Magic Find Even Work?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

The typical response seems to be, “RNG is RNG.” As others have pointed out, an increase to 2% for a rare is more of a long-term result if anything, and as it doesn’t work on the chests, but only field drops, it’s probably most useful when you’re cutting through a high volume of mobs.

An example: Been doing lots of fractals. One run, I got 8 rares. Another run later on, on a higher fractal difficulty, I popped an Omnomberry Bar and a Magic Find booster for an increased 70% or so. I was expecting to see a lot more rare drops or T. 6 mats – instead, I saw a lot less that run.

So: RNG is RNG (with slight boosts from Magic Find).

That said, I still like to have some MF equipped and don’t think it’s the selfish devil many folks make it out to be.

Particle Effect Skin for Infused Quivers?

in Crafting

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

then why not have both? personally i think it would be cool if people wanted flaming/dark/light arrow quivers just for looks. if they wanna spend the time and money on it why not? you can have your plain quiver, they can have their magic quiver

This. Quivers wouldn’t automatically get the particle skin upon being infused with the 250 ectos the first time. It would require a second infusion with 250 ectos, like the capacitors, to get the particle skin – so all parties would be appeased.

Granted, that would set me another 250 back toward a Legendary, which I probably should have saved, but it would be nice to have the option.

My quiver desires Mist Swirlies. Are you receiving this transmission, oh Devs of Swirlination?

Particle Effect Skin for Infused Quivers?

in Crafting

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

Are there any plans to allow quivers to be ascended once more through the Mystic Forge, to get the particle effect skin similar to the infused fractal capacitor?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Fractal_Capacitor_

I read on the wiki that ‘Upgraded items may also gain an enhanced, sometimes radiant skin.’

Clearly I didn’t do my homework, because I just assumed that meant quivers as well.

Of course, after scrounging up the 250 ectos and infusing the thing, I realized that wasn’t the case. Did some digging, and found I was way off mark.

Might have rethought my investment priorities if I’d read up on it better. Alas.

Anyway – any chance these might get a similar upgraded infused skin down the road?

I’m assuming that would mean another 250 ectos for a cosmetic upgrade, but still, the option would be nice to have, as after spending the initial 250, I doubt I’ll start from square one with a capacitor.

Add Patch Size to Patch Note Dev Posts?

in Suggestions

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

Would it be possible for the patch size to be posted along with the patch note posts the devs place on the forum?

The percentage is unreliable, as it goes off numbers of files left, as opposed to how much is actually left to download.

For those of us with ungodly slow connections, it would be a small but welcome addition to the patch note posts, so we know how much is actually left to download.

Recipe or Cash for Boosters/Harvesting Tools?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

Has the team thought about applying a vendor price (say, five silver) or a mystic forge recipe where you have a chance of getting something actually useful, in exchange for all the excess trash you get out of BLC chests?

For example, I have TONS of Black Lion harvesting tools and XP/Crafting/Killstreak boosters I’m never going to have any cause to use. The only option is to destroy them, however, which seems like a waste. So, instead, they’re just sitting around clogging up banks and alts.

Giving a moderate vendor price to these or making a recipe seems like a fair solution, considering the rarity of BLC keys, or the real life money spent to buy them (in hopes of a permanent item).

Thoughts?

Black Lion Keys not on sale?

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

I figured they would be for the New Year’s sale, but I guess this is the last day.

Probably a good thing for me though, though. I wasted 4000 gems gambling on minis when they were on sale the first day, and got nothing out of it – literally sunk all of the minis back into the Mystic Forge hoping for an exotic. That hurt.

Curious, though, why the keys didn’t go on sale like with Black Friday.

Hoard them, hoping they’ll be of use at some point in the future or worth more on the TP eventually, vendor them, TP what you can now, trash the cogs?

Right now, I personally have no idea.

I’ve got to agree with OP.

Anet, you said in making this game you looked at everything and said, “Well, is it fun.” And what wasn’t was thrown out the window. With this boss, you’ve ditched that ethic.

It’s my second time completely failing on this boss – and this time with a competent party. We spent a good two hours going back and forth on its health. That’s with a decent counterclockwise lava pit strategy.

It’s cheap as hell. Never mind the fact that the dungeon preceding it is a monotonous pain. When you combine a boss that has an enormous health pool that regenerates any damage within milliseconds of initiating the healing phase, with constant AOE one-hit kills and a wonky vulnerability mechanic (the lava pots), all you’re left with is a frustrating mess.

I’m not typically one to complain about stuff like this, but this boss feels like the worst of MMOs shoved into a small, contained space.

Fix this. It’s simply not fun, and it calls into question spending any more time with the game at all.

Black Lion Chests

No official answer in any of the threads on this, but after personally testing about 30 Black Lion Chests during the event, I believe I can safely answer that there are no festive items in the Black Lion Chests (and there will likely not be in the future).

Wintersday Items in Black Lion Chests?

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

Still no official word on this?

I’m assuming dev silence means no holiday items in the BLC chests, as they don’t want to create another uproar. Still, if so, that’s pretty lame. I bought the 25 key bundle when it went on sale specifically for the next holiday event. If I’d known they were taking holiday items out of the chests, and switching to consortium style only, I would have saved the gems for that. Which, clearly, is frustrating.

Anyway, whatever. I guess I’ll go ahead and blow through my key stack and post the results here. I’ll let you folks know if anything (or nothing) holiday drops.

If they truly are no longer putting holiday items in BL chests, then I guess there’s no point in saving keys anymore anyway…

I’m assuming this is going to be the Black Lion Chests, if not then I guess it will be something like the Consotrium chests. On the bright side, there will be plenty of other things to spend your gems on, hopefully minipets!

That’s my dilemma – I’m assuming they’re referring to the Consortium-type chests, but I’m not sure. I’m hoping that holiday items will also be in Black Lion chests, as I already went ahead and blew the gems on Black Lion keys, anticipating that’s where you’d get the items, as opposed to separate chests on sale in the store.

Wintersday Items in Black Lion Chests?

in Wintersday

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

So, during the Black Friday sale, I went ahead and spent the $20 or so on gems in order to pick up the Black Lion key bundle. I figured, like the first event, you would have a chance at finding event items in the chest, so I might as well stock up on some keys while the price was discounted, see if I could roll a Wintersday weapon skin or something when the event began.

I’m looking at the Wintersday update right now, though (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/december-2012/) and it doesn’t say anything about BL chests. Instead, it says, “With festive town clothes, wintery weapon skins, and chests full of holiday treasures, The Black Lion Trading Company has everything you need to celebrate Wintersday! Check out the new items and much more in the Gem Store today!”

Did I screw the pooch by spending my gems on BL keys (when I should have saved the gems to buy a skin direct, or one of the Wintersday chests), or will there be a chance to get Event skins from the Black Lion chests during the event, like before?

[Review] The Angry Luddite's Guild Wars 2 Review

in Community Creations

Posted by: TheAngryLuddite.1834

TheAngryLuddite.1834

Finally finished and posted our review of the game, fittingly enough on the anniversary of its official release.

Here’s a clip from the review:

It’s all incredibly different from the first Guild Wars, in which the only playable race was human, and you had just a handful of face and hair options to choose from. Then again the games are so different, it’s almost pointless to compare them. Yes, they share the same lore, and the visual style is clearly an evolution of the other, but the way they handle and play could not be more different. After wrapping up a three-month binge of Guild Wars, prior to the release of Guild Wars 2, I was imparted with the sense of being a small cog, fitting into a precise, and perfectly functioning machine. For my first week of play with Guild Wars 2, all I could see was chaos. Bigger. That’s what Guild Wars 2 is, in every sense. The numbers are bigger, the models are bigger, the world is bigger, the feeling is… a bit like stepping in front of a shrink ray, and being left to enjoy the confines of your suddenly fascinating kitchen sink. Let’s take the combat and health points, for example. In the first game, characters typically had between 400 and 800 health points, and it would take either temporary effects, or a whole lot of specific effort to push them much farther than that. In the sequel, you have more than that by level 5 (of which there are now 80, instead of 20). Combat in the first game was also played largely stationary. Like most MMO’s, you stayed in one place while you attacked or cast a spell, moving only to approach or flee your target. Conversely, in Guild Wars 2 you are almost always on the move, using your skills whilst strafing enemies – many of which send you plowing through whatever’s unfortunate enough to be in your path. Heck, there’s even the ability to dodge – something that feels unnecessary at first – and later, vital. Moving from the first game, where everything is very precise and calculated, it’s fairly overwhelming at first, and even feels a little sloppy. Thankfully, that feeling passes, replaced by a general sense of awe and appreciation of all the risks and sweeping changes that developer ArenaNet has made in transition.

I’m one of those that has been bleating about this for a while. Great to know it hasn’t been forgotten.

Anyhow, I had a thought – is it possible the reason it didn’t work for us, because we used it in the overflow?

I don’t know if I did or not, but it suddenly occurred to me that could be why, as originally I had no idea overflow servers were a mix of players from different servers, and, as I’ve heard there have been influence issues with switching servers, and overflow servers were more common at launch than the main servers, it seemed like it could be possible.

I actually had this problem before, but didn’t realize it was connected to jewelery, but now it makes sense.

I just popped four level 80 crafted jewelery greens in, and nothing came out.

Now that I think about it, the last time I had this issue, and posted in another ‘mystic forge bugged’ thread here, was when I popped in crafted jewelry. Everything else so far has been fine.

TheAngryLuddite.1834

I’m up to 3 issues with the guild I’m leading right now.

The guild name is ‘The Angry Luddites’ – tag is TAL.

First, The Tome of Influence from the Digital Deluxe never gave me 1000 influence when I used it – it simply disappeared. This is an issue I have had since day one, and have yet to hear anything on.

Now, today, I just got a ‘Letter of Commendation’ from the personal story. It is supposed to give 400 influence upon use. However, instead, it says I am not representing a guild – but I am. I am the leader of our guild.

Last, and perhaps worst of all, today for some reason it won’t let me begin any new guild updates. I click the button for guild armorer – nothing happens. No error message. Just nothing.

Any response on the long-standing bug and the new ones encountered today would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

EDIT: The Letter of Commendation and the Guild Upgrades appear to be fixed now – guessing it was a temporary hiccup. However, the old Tome of Influence missing influence bit still remains. Nonetheless, that’s two less things to worry about.

This is an editorial I wrote up, mostly in favor of ArenaNet’s strict hand with Guild Wars 2.

You can read it here:

http://www.theangryluddite.com/opinion/why-arenanet-is-the-new-paragon-of-gaming/

And, a clip from the article:

“Since the game’s official launch earlier this week, the developers behind Guild Wars 2 have made clear that this game will be different – and they have taken some pretty drastic steps in doing so. Unlike the first game, which relied on physical trades made between two players, brokered through chat, Guild Wars 2 contains an automated Trading Post and Mail system. For veterans of the first game in particular, this has been a highly anticipated feature. Unfortunately, players found the services disabled for the majority of launch. Now, here’s where it gets interesting: While most figured it was just your typical launch issue, disabling the mail, at least, appears to have been a deliberate move on the part of ArenaNet to combat hackers.”

Note: Some language in the article, due to the content being discussed.

As someone else here mentioned, the Tome of Influence is bugged sporadically.

Some (like me) will use it, and it will disappear without the 1000 influence being added.

Now, for new guilds with a small roster (again, like mine), that missing 1000 influence is a pretty huge setback for advancement.

I’ve submitted two tickets on it with no response, but I totally understand that you guys are swamped with a myriad of more pressing issues.

Still, it would be nice to hear an official word on this bug, and hopefully get it resolved soon, as now that the guild rush has passed, our influence gain has slowed to a crawl, and that missing 1k would be a very welcome boon.

Here’s a GW2 Guru thread on the same issue if you need more details and instances of this occurring:
