No, the truth is they want to coerce people into doing things the normally wouldn’t… like fighting underwater or zerging a particular zone.

I don’t know, I haven’t felt like I was being forced into things. I mean, if I want it done quickly? Join a WvW zerg and knock it out quickly. And if it’s a zerg which actually has enemy players in the way, you can get a good jump on half the Monthly. I mean, two nights in WvW and I had 3/4 on my Monthly. Less than two hours a night, and the Daily only requred a Karma purchase and a Laurel Vendor visit to round them out.

Also, it’s less “coercion” and more “enticement”. Coercion implies a penalty to be applied if you don’t, enticement implies a reward for doing it.

Oh get real. People exaggerate too much.

No. I’m not, I never got to do the Aetherblade Retreat because Rangers’ pets were too much of a liability. (Exact words.) I don’t do Fractals because I got tired of arguing about why I needed to roll a Warrior instead. Seven out of ten of the other attempts to get into a group weren’t interested as they wanted experienced people only.

I also got kicked because I have one piece of MF gear and that was just because I liked the item (Vekk’s Solidified Aether Circuit).

So I mostly do dungeons with the guild, which is roughly once every couple weeks But PUGs just aren’t interested in me for dozens of reasons. Being a Ranger just is the one which is said the most to me.

That last bit there is where the sticking point is. For me, almost every run is the first one at a boss or path . . . so I don’t know what it is. So people have yet one more (of four) reasons to not pick me :P

. . . why exactly should I care about dungeons again?

I’m pretty sure you can find people willing to help you with dungeons very easily, even if you write new to the dungeon, at first, it’s better to go pvt or knight then go zerk, maybe zerk with a few pvt trinkets, go zerk when you understand the boss and know how to counter him.

I use Soldiers/Knights almost exclusively because when I was going Honed or Strong I wasn’t quite feeling the strength.

I also sometimes am able to sync my schedule with the guild group who does dungeons now and then, so I do eventually get a chance. But with a lack of experience with the dungeons, the groups I do get into often just seem confused when I don’t know what to do

Playing the “wrong” class is probably selfish too.

Of course, mf was removed because the current implementation was horrible. Though they could be chided to fix it, I guess it’s easier to take the easier way out.

When it pleases the vocal players crying for it to go away? Yes. It’s much easier to just rip it out and say “screw it”.

If that becomes the only way to get a group, including the whole “stop being a Ranger” thing I get told very often . . . I’ll very quickly drop this game and go back to something more fun.

It’s okay you like to play that way, but there’s almost nothing for me to join in on now. If that turns into “actually nothing”, then I don’t see a point.

The temporary content pressures people to buy stuff, for politics we had the support stuff making it even a sort of P2W. I am very pleased that Ellen won and not the gem-store guy btw. Maybe that tells them something?

People are already ranting and raving about how it was fixed, so I’m not pleased my candidate won. What’s the point to be happy about it if everyone thinks you’re on the side which cheated?

As for the temporary content Gem Store stuff? I may be an idiot but I always sort of assumed that was one of those things the Gem Store would do eventually anyway. Discount seasons, interesting toys to market to people who want to play around, all the time being barely useful in a mechanical sense.

Except for the infinite tools, which were very highly priced and yet remain useful to me

Non Berserker players disturb anyone who cares about efficiency.
Berserker players don’t disturb players who don’t care about efficiency.

Also, funny about that “free loot bag” point. I’m 99% sure i’d beat anyone bringing it in a 1v1 with myself wearing berserker gear. Because just bad players bring this argument who didn’t understand what this game is about.

Also, lets come back to the stat list and what each stat contributes to a party. Using that, could anyone show me how antly non berserker stat is helping the party in any way?
Vitality, Toughness, Magic Find. 100% selfish stats.

Given that healing other people isn’t something I can do or have done to me reliably? I’ll stick to trying to take care of myself by not making myself go down easy.

If you are using gear that buffs your own stats without helping the team (toughness and vitality as examples) then you are being selfish. How hard is that to understand?

Yeah, cause not being glass and going down all the time is so not helping anything. Pretty tired of picking up zerkers off the ground all the time cause they can’t deal with a fart wafting in their direction.

Wouldn’t be as bad if they could time their dodges well enough. Of course, in open PvE a lot of people don’t bother to pack extra evasion skills, and just autoattack and stop paying attention. (I love using those people for Daily Reviver on the Queensdale troll.)

. . . we did get a lot of disprovements like time-gated / temporary content, reduction of loot drop making the game even more gold-driven, a more heavy focus on the gem-store, systems that improve zerging in WvW, laurels for daily’s that next to being time-gated also pressure you to play in a way you do not like.

What’s this about focus on the Gem-store? Has it suddenly become necessary to buy Gems? Also, I haven’t actually noticed loot drops getting worse for me, they’ve still been crap like always with the occasional glimmer of interesting items . . .

WvW will always be about the zerg vs siege, that’s just how the meta is until a massive shift is put into place. Of course, once the zerg stops being profitable or fun, nobody will play it.

You understand why ascended is to be time-gated right? It’s to reduce the impact of the inevitable power creep. Whether it’ll be effective or not is another matter ofc

How is that? Delaying an impact is not reducing it.

Time-gating serves one purpose and one only. It stacks the deck on the side of the developer in the tug-of-war between the developer’s desire to extend the game and player desire to burn through it as fast as possible.

This is not quite accurate. Time-gating in games extends the game, but it’s also meant to prevent the player from burning through content OR far too easily getting an edge over the game which takes challenge away. I’ve seen games where (if you know what you’re doing) you can get a massively overpowering edge early on due to skipping time-gates.

It does alter the balance of the game following the point where you “sequence break” to be somewhat less interesting.

Which is funny because what dailies do is remove options.

Players no longer have an option of working towards a goal.

Why are we ensuring an arbitrary 15 days minimum? I must have missed that part of the conversation.

Because a single ascended piece is set at 20 laurels. you can get a maximum of 40 laurels per month thus 20 laurels take 15 days to get on average.

The 20 laurels price is specific. They could have priced each part to any amount of laurel they choose. They priced it at 20 because they want a 1 per 15 day acquisition rate.

That’s how I thought you’d answer.

Question: If any given piece of ascended gear is worth 15 days, then how is it possible to get a ring from one level 10 fractal run? If Anet truly wanted the price of a piece of ascended gear to be 15 days, they wouldn’t have included this.

I can answer that:

They wanted it to be RNG or 15 days, from the assumptions of the timeframe. Therefore anyone really wanting it could farm for it from the Fractals or wait it out. Similarly, the Accessories and Guild Commendations.

. . . and no, I’m not saying the values are good, but that’s the theory I’ve determined is behind it.

This isn’t an opinion. The drops are definitely worse than in any mmorpg ever made.

. . . EverQuest. “Common” rare spawn loot which was useless by the time you could earn it, for instance. Or worse . . . trying for quest pieces ruled by RNG both for spawn and drop rate.

. . . OR EARLIER, Ultima Online. Where half the drops on a enemy monster body would rot because it wasn’t worth the weight.

Or earlier, Meridian 59, where there would often-camped rooms with tons of stuff on the floor. All not worth the weight to haul it to a merchant.

- Some of the players. Notably, the unhelpful, snarky, and the generally ill-tempered who remind me of prior MMO experiences. There is no fix for this, and I’ve grown a thicker skin over it. (Still don’t like it though.)

- Difficulty of earning Tier 6 Fine materials. Mostly in that there’s not a lot of places to reliably earn them where enough people hang out to have a good time. It feels like a farm and work over natural play, sometimes, when there’s not enough people around to take my mind off it.

- Personal Story a bit lackluster. After the halfway point it starts to get lost in the woods and never quite recovers until the last chapter in Orr. But by then the shine is gone. I meant it, the first three or four chapters are rather great to play through.

- Home Instance lackluster. Hopefully we’ll see more use out of it as the Living Story updates continue.

- I suck at PvP too much for WvW to be fun except running with a group of 6-10 people.

- WvW not fun running with a group of 25+ people aside from seeing numbers go up.

Okay, so then the question becomes: If ascended gear is not necessary, what’s the harm in someone getting a piece in 6 hours?

It’s a good question. It also transplants well:

“What’s the harm in someone soloing CoF1?”

“What’s the harm in giving everyone starting this D&D game a +5 Sword of Buttkicking?”

Though to be more fair than to shift the argument, since I don’t mind yours . . . there’s little obvious harm, but then I expect if you can craft it and the materials are found in bags dropped by champions . . .

About 10% of the players are going to craft one in the first six hours. But that hinges on a lot of assumptions, as does the argument of it not being any harm at all. In other games, and at other times, the harm isn’t readily apparent as the players get what they want . . . but the luster wears off when you earn something easily versus having to do some work for it.

. . . not saying it needs to be grindy as Legendaries can be. (Luck of the drop plays a lot into that!) But if they’re simply “play six hours, get an Ascended cookie!” then what meaning does it hold? Heck, what meaning does anything ahead of it have if you can just . . . get it like that and Exotics are a waste of stepping stone?

With it time gated everyone is annoyed over acquisition time. What they are not annoyed over are the few who can leap into the “stats” lead while it takes the rest weeks and months to catch up.

Here’s a major issue I have. People in favor of time-gating have been saying two mutually exclusive things:

1) Ascended gear is not necessary, therefore laurels are not necessary, therefore daily laurel handouts are fine.

2) Without time-gating hardcores get laurels too fast, get ascended gear too fast, and leave everyone else in the dust power-wise.

Both of these cannot be true.

They’re not, because if there wasn’t time-gating then there wouldn’t be Laurels since Laurels are the time-gate.

I hope that made sense, it did in my head as I was thinking about this again . . .

Yeah, I see what you’re saying and I’m not accusing you personally of trying to claim both these things were true.

However, I have seen the argument “without laurels ascended gear would be bought with gold or crafting mats, which hardcores would get faster”. This is usually a post or two after “why do you care so much about ascended gear anyway, it’s not necessary”.

I have used both arguments at once before, but I can explain the mental contortions to try to use them:

1 – “Without Laurel time-gates, Ascended would be bought with other means and it’s highly likely more active players (or richer ones) could purchase them outright.” Personally? If it was Karma available, I’d have them in six hours after discovering where they were purchasable. If it was Gold, six weeks. Materials? I’d just write them off unless I have excess gold. (Note: I have written off the back pieces even though I really really want a quiver.)

2 – “Why would you want it anyway, it’s not as big as you think.” Because it’s not. Right now, people in less than Rares are not at a significant disadvantage in PvE. In WvW it tends less towards 1v1 fights and thus the comparison of one person versus another is kind of silly, in my opinion. If PvE was changed so that larger amounts could only be completed if you had gear upwards of Rare (Exotic/Ascended only) then people would (rightfully) be kitten ed at the gear-gating. If WvW was altered that 1v1 was more useful, it would still wind up Zerg vs Zerg anyway due to the meta.

I’m sorry but no. Throw all the fallacies and rhetoric at it you want, you’re still arguing with the dictionary and are wrong.

You’re taking the connotative meaning and wrongfully thinking it’s the only acceptable usage.

If using a definition other than it’s most common one is ‘twisting’, then what of homonyms?

Let’s just stop right now with the word-mincing? I hope the semantics and wordplay here are agreeable to people.

- You’re not forced to play daily, you are encouraged. For some this encouragement holds a stronger pull than others, so that it might feel they as though they are being forced.

- It’s not a job, using colloquial english, it’s a hobby which someone sinks a lot of time into. Guild Wars 2 is not the only example of this, nor is it limited to MMOs and video games.

- It can be construed and made out to be a job, by definition. It can also be construed to be made out as a hobby within the same vein, and fit a little better.

- There really needs to be better reasons to log in daily than “chasing the Daily”. Aside from fun, since that’s not a real reason at all.

Change rewards from one a day to seven a week. You still acquire them at the same pace. It just gives players the freedom to do one every day or seven on the weekend, etc. I don’t see how anyone can be against this.

. . . I can point out one issue. People burning all their rewards in one day might, possibly, have no more reason to log in. People they know and who want to play with that first person wouldn’t want to show up if their buddy wasn’t around, so they start to synchronize . . .

Enough people show up at the same time to the same content it becomes known there’s a “hot time” to get in on things, and thus more people start a tendency . . .

Sure, it may not entirely be realistic, but I have watched it happen before with an entire guild in a different game where events were limited to a very tough limit per day; they would always run at reset time and if you happened to not be available? PUG or wait for the next day.

I’m not sure I understand completely. You’re talking about the fact that ascended gear, which is time gated, does in fact have higher stats correct? It is definitely true that in a duel, someone with higher stats is at an advantage. Plain and simple. At the end of the day, skill has a far more significant impact, but you absolutely can’t deny the fact that a person with better stats and gear is at an advantage regardless.

Actually, if one of those is an engineer, ranger, or elementalist? Doesn’t matter what their gear is They’re faceplanting in two minutes, tops.

I’ve been reading your posts, and I’m probably not understanding. But you have interesting points. I’m not sure I agree with your argument but:

- Laurels aren’t completely critical, and there’s usually not much effort required to earn them. They were put in as a method of alternatively releasing Ascended accessories via a time gate instead of RNG or Fractal-farming. If they ever introduce another method of earning Neckpieces? We’ll have other options than Laurels.

- The Charged Quartz are only good for “Celestial” gear currently, a stat combination I recall stat crunchers basically going “not worth it” a while back. As in “better to go Zerker or something which bolsters you than a jack-of-all-trades”.

- Bonus Chests were made because the World Bosses were simply not dropping loot all the time which had any value. I know I (often) got a chest with four blues and one green. They’re limited to once per day to keep people from just farming the same thing over and over – same as the actual chests they drop are limited access.

- Dungeon Rewards I can’t speak to because I don’t do dungeons. I also don’t get invited along on any, so they’re something I shan’t talk about as I have no experience and no stake in them. This includes Fractals.

I’m trying to remember if there are any other daily type content limitations going on, but I can’t think of any right away.

People where complaining that dailies didn’t give anything good. They make them good and other people complain. Would this still be a problem if the amulets were available from a different source?

Dear neighbor, it will always be a problem. Always, for someone.

Does anyone else feel that gw2 is imbalanced?

It’s so balanced my ranger keeps falling over.

How do you manage that?
I am serious- ranger is one of the most survivable classes Iv’e played.

I think the classes are pretty well balanced in PvE for what it is worth.

You can pretty much do anything with any class- it just comes down to if you can play your class or not, they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Don’t play PvP so can’t comment on that.

PvE my ranger is real good at surviving if I don’t have something dropped on me before I can get away. (Knockdown ranged hits, for instance, or Risen Priest of Grenth.) Aside from Champions and above, I can handle most things thrown my way short of outnumbering me 10-to-1. And in that case, I just run and often manage to escape. (Thank you, revamped Hunter’s Shot.)

WvW? It’s roughly 50/50 live or die . . . that drops sharply if I’m actually fighting to 10/90. But that’s because I’m terrible at PvP type combat and always have been (always will be).

However? I’ve watched some rangers do some extraordinary stuff in better hands than mine.

It’s sad really because the sub system really is better for the quality of a MMO in general. People just saw these crappy f2p games that they thought were awesome for 3 days and then decided they didn’t want to pay subs anymore.

I am pretty sure people spend more on cash shops than subs and the quality of the games has become less of games without any subs for sure.

Mmm, I can only speak for myself and my close family.

I play non-sub games because I don’t want to get stuck trying to cancel the billing (and it failing) or paying for a game I don’t play anymore because I put so much work into it. I did that with EverQuest for a year before I finally realized I wasn’t going back and had paid a nice chunk I could have spent on a PS2 game to keep me occupied for that year.

I play free games because there’s no guilt then in saying “okay, see you” when I stop liking it. I pay for the cash shop, sometimes, because I want something useful out of it. (See: “Molten Alliance Pick” and “Consortium Harvesting Sickle”, for instance – as opposed to Black Lion Keys . . . Boosters . . . backpack covers. I mean, I have Mad Memories, why the heck would I want anything else on my back? It’s a light source!)

My brother plays free games because he doesn’t always have money to keep a subscription active, and because he loves loves loves League of Legends. He pays roughly the same amount of money he spent on his Magic: The Gathering habit in the past (with me, yes, and I’m only somewhat regretful of doing it).

My father won’t play subscription games anymore because he rarely has time to play them and they just don’t interest him. It interests him less when a high degree of reaction ability is called for, which is why he plays Civ games.

My mother plays no games at all, aside from the Net Walk. You know, where you start at some news article and wind up four hours later researching low-intensity magnetic fields and their effect on the human body . . .

Oh, and I get more play out of single player games anymore or things like Minecraft and Settlers of Catan than MMOs

If we’re going to talk about engaging, difficult combat? I miss Monster Hunter.

Not the RNG of it, just the battles.

It is absolutely, positively unfair to prevent someone for making progress, even though they spend more time playing the game simply because they can’t log in every day. I value giving people the freedom to play as they can. The only way it can be fair for everyone is to reward people only for the amount of time they play, not when they play.

I’d agree . . . if any of the daily items were progress towards something more tangible than the (admittedly almightily awesome) Endless Mystery Cat Tonic.

Also, now with Laurels being rewarded out of the Achievement Reward milestones, if you do chase other achievements than the Daily you can still get Laurels rewarded.

At this point I’d like, again, to lament the lack of Ascended at the words “servers are now live” . . . would have been so much neater than to cobble and push in the Laurels.

That’s rather a leap that “Fun reward” must equal gear.

It’s rather blind to think that “fun reward” can not also equal gear.

I didn’t say it couldn’t, only that it’s a leap to think it MUST.

The word reward isn’t used at all in there. They were talking about what you DO not what you get.

Possibly, but I was talking about the quoted post from my original

and, for the record, i never said the parents or guardians aren’t responsible. i simply said that the casino is responsible as well, which in this case, is guild wars 2. since they’re the ones providing the gambling. which the RNG boxes are. which makes them a casino. marketing gambling. to children. if you can’t see how that’s immoral, or at the very least completely irresponsible, then by all means, bring this conversation up at the next parent teacher meeting, and see what the results are.

Oh gods in heaven, no. Because the splitting of hairs of what constitutes gambling has derailed more PTAs than the question of what to call the American Civil War. I’m not going to go any further on that note, though I’ll just say it needed popcorn and tickets.

then just answer me this one last question, as a teacher, if it was brought up at a meeting, and you took the stance you just took now, would you still have a job?

That depends on too many variable details, but I think the answer would be “yes”. Not a certain “yes” because it does depend on a lot of other things. I mean, one teacher had a “Wheel of Fortune” in their room you could spend bonus tickets (for answering questions in class) and that slipped by for ages. Similarly “grab boxes” which were rewards for best homework grade . . .

So, no, I don’t think I’d lose my job over it. But it would depend greatly on several factors.

On the topic of “gambling in GW2”, final note? I sincerely think it could be a problem but I’m not about to tell someone who earns their money and spends it on what they want “you are wrong” unless it’s illegal in the location they are doing it. They want to throw away their money? That’s their problem. Parents have a problem with their kids doing it? Raise your kids to understand probability better.

How much have you paid to play Guild Wars 2?

I used to play City of Heroes since beta and that was 15/month till they went FTP.

So i dont mind dumping some cash into this game especially if it helps the devs out, ive probably spent around 200 bucks already

how much have you guys spent on this game?

Was it worth it?

Discuss

I paid something like $60 or so for the preordered digital version to play this game.

After I have had a steady paycheck for four months I have spent $60 on the game further, largely for the everlasting gathering tools. Anything else beforehand I purchased through Gold to Gems conversion.

oh, so what you’re saying is that it’s the parent’s responsibility to make sure their kids aren’t gambling, and the casinos hold no obligation to ensure the same exact thing?

No, casinos are under a legal obligation, that’s different. And you knew it was different, plus . . .

in any other place in the world, that’s illegal, but it’s ok because it’s in gw2? right…..

Of course it’s not okay. It’s just not illegal. There’s a difference there. Excepting Gem Cards, the other means of getting Gems to purchase a huge bunch of Keys is to input a credit card or Paypal account. I don’t know for sure, but it’s generally accepted that if you have a credit card you are financially responsible enough to make your own decisions that way.

. . . it’s laughable, yes, especially with what you discover when you start looking into it, but that’s the assumption card companies operate from. And there’s a bunch of holes in the whole mess anyway so we come back to . . . one detail.

It’s not illegal. Therefore there’s no legal leverage to stop it from happening, and thus it falls to others to handle it. And so!

Why aren’t the parents or guardians being responsible in keeping an eye on this again?

the onus shouldn’t be on the kids to learn how to be responsible with money, the onus should be on ANet to not market gambling to children.

Nope.

The onus is on the parents or guardians to know what their children are up to, and whether it is potentially harmful. There is no person, or group responsible for raising a child which is not the parent or guardian.

I’ve had this conversation too many times as a teacher, with teachers, and with other people who felt it was their obligation to raise children in their classrooms or groups. No. It’s not their responsibility, and it sure as heck isn’t something I would ever . . . ever lay at the feet of a corporation.
