Thanks everyone, I’ll try out some of these suggestions on my Guardian and see if there’s any improvement. Also, feel free to message me in-game about anything. I’m always up for grouping up in higher-level zones due to how tough they can be to solo in at times.

If you’re on Stormbluff I’ll probably run into you at some point, if not . . .

I’m not guesting until the pitchforks are put away towards guests.

You know, the problem with having the storyline branch out so much is the sheer cost of the voice acting. For each story mission there’s . . . I dunno, about two dozen voiced lines. Multiply that by as many as you would like to add, and if there’s a divergence where one mission might have several different characters in a spot count it separately for each one.

Now look up, and this could take a while, what voice actors charge for their work, especially ones like Felicia Day or Steve Blum.

This price tag is why voiced games tend to be rather narrow in options.

Thing is my guardian is only level 50, so she doesn’t have access to anything like Knight’s or Cleric’s or anything like that—that stuff is only available, at the very minimum? Level 60. I’m still having to deal with things like Strong, Hearty, Honed, etc…

All you have to do is switch back and forth. Problem solved.

New problem: Large guilds and members of a few have said a lot they don’t want "leechers’. And you could in theory get caught up in that definition since you’re not fully devoting yourself to Harbingers of The Blackety Black Dawn of Twilight.

then find a large guild who doesn’t think that way?

Not everyone thinks the same just because a couple guys in-game/on the forums said so.

New problem: But that involves effort, and time, and trying to be sociable.

Though, of course, you still can sift through all that stuff and look for a proper fit for yourself. It’s that there are people who would rather not have to devote time to it when . . . in their view . . . this content probably could have just been open to them immediately.

If you’re being one-shotted, is it by something named “Veteran” or “Champion”? Or is it one of the ogres/ettins/giants? Because those . . . those are no joke, if you’re not dodging your rolls off. Oh, it’s the krait.

I’m going to need to test that out., but it’s worth noting that despite wearing heavy armor Guardians seem . . . really kind of fragile when they’re not holding Aegis or something similar. It’s why I haven’t entirely gone back to mine despite really enjoying the norn story.

As for why they buffed the krait? Fabled Djannor. There are people who were basically waiting the entire time for Tequatl AFKing at the asura lab and mowing down krait, coming back every few minutes to clean up corpses. Similar to what was going on at Shelter’s Gate and Penitent Camp. They did something similar at Kessex Hills when that centaur bridge quest was permacamped by about a dozen engineers.

Why? Because if you get enough people in there then other people can’t land enough to actually get credit for being there while the people who do are either not at the keyboard or doing something else at their desk. It’s not fair, and it’s why I’m not pleased with the change (now I ran by and NOBODY was at Shelter) something had to be done.

Small guilds don’t need a “guild hall”, but they surely need a “guild home”. Anyone caring to bet if they will get one when the halls arrive?

I’ll lay 50 Silver that if Guild Halls arrive you won’t just be issued one, much like you couldn’t just HAVE a hall in GW1. You will either need to go get something to show you earned it or pay for it.

And you people can hold me to that.

But lets face it, Blizzard has best programmers and game designers just like Bioware in terms of single player RPG.

/Sarcasm

Please be /Sarcasm.

No, it’s sad but true. Just see storytelling and choices in Star Wars: Kotor or Dragon Age and here. And let’s be clear, i’m not saying WoW is better then GW2, just that Blizzard has best people, that’s why EVERY other MMO sooner or later starts to copy them (just like GW2 started, good idea, bad realisation)

Story telling is one part of a RPG and will agree Bioware does that the best. But I still like Bethesda RPG’s a lot lot more than Bioware one’s.

Blizzard is living on it’s past, almost all their top people that made the company brand and they are living off their brand are gone, hah the founders of Anet are ex-Blizzard. But today there is nothing at all to make me believe they have the best programmers. They are the Coke of gaming, that’s all anymore.

Best programmers?

I’m gonna have to go with someone other than Blizzard. They can do some really great things about getting minimum system requirements very low . . . so does ArenaNet and Mojang. Yes, Mojang. Their signature game works pretty well on low-end computers and they seem to want to keep that going from what I have heard.

Are we talking about most bugs? Or bug-free? Because I can’t think of very many games which didn’t have bugs involved which were released in the last five years. Cave Story, I think, was the last one I played which didn’t have serious bugs.

Are we measuring what people accomplish based on the size of the team? Then I’d say Mojang is considerably undersold on programming expertise, along with that fellow who does Dwarf Fortress. Or the one person who did Cave Story, music and graphics and all.

Overall, I still wait for the people who did NetHack to stand up so we can applaud them for a tightly-created game which has the potential to have even my grandkids snapping what passes for input devices in that far-flung future. That game will always exist, and it will always be amazingly well-done. And incredibly frustrating.

I’d be hesitant to join a large guild where I would lose the ability to have personal conversations with those I care about.

The problem with this is, someone at ANet will take it to mean that the solution is a private chat. So they’ll implement that and then wonder why everyone is still kittened off.

There already is private chat. I often use it to talk to people when I have to leave the spot where they’re hanging around. Or if I want to have a conversation in Troll’s Arch . . .

No… there is an ability to whisper… which allows you to have a private conversation with exactly 1 user.

That is very different than being able to create a channel for multiple people to converse in… similar to party chat, squad chat, guild chat, map chat….

I still don’t see how this is an issue. Just get 3-5 guildies to do CoF P1 a few times and you will get influence quickly. You can also guest on multiple servers and get groups of people to do Peni/Shelter’s gate farm (each group earns 20 on completion.)

You do realize that the bonus influence caps at 2 players, right?

You do realize that IF you already had all the other stuff prior on Art of War unlocked, it’s 30k influence to unlock the first set of guild events?

You do realize that guesting does NOT earn influence, right?

You do realize, once smaller guilds spend the time to unlock the content (even if it takes them 4 months to do so), they will NOT be able to complete the content, as it requires a MUCH larger group to complete some of the guild events?

You do realize, I just made Swiss cheese out of your whole argument that you don’t understand where it’s a problem?

Edit : What makes your argument even more laughable is the fact that you already asked in another thread about influence not working when guesting, so you already shot wholes in your one argument…wow.

First, you get 100 Influence if your whole party is your guild when you do a dungeon. I just did that at Honor of the Waves (story mode) last night. That part works just fine, including the one night we did Citadel of Flame path 1 (for some of us our first time) and later on I found them doing Twilight Arbor (story).

Secondly, we took a look at the cost to unlocks and said “well that’s not good, guess it’ll be a little longer”. As of right now, we’ve decided to chip in some gold to help out as we need to and make an effort to do more stuff if we can. And we fully expect to fail guild bounties the first time . . . there’s a one-sentence story I bring up: “Anyone remember the first Urgoz run I was in for, the six hour tour?” I think we eventually got it down to two and a half, but we did keep at it regularly until we learned how to deal with it.

Lastly, Influence while guesting . . . I think it works, but since every server has their own Influence/Upgrade history . . .

You know what else was surprising? Hidden among the krait were Veterans and Champions during the Fabled Djannor mission. And they cleaned house until people realized there were some tough baddies there.

Some of these events really needed to be tweaked to be anything other than “loot pinatas” and feeling like you were watching a tower defense game.

Races too…
Charrs were scary back in GW1, now they talk like cavemen.
Asuras used to be know-it-alls, they still are but they look very childish now and less dignified.
Humans were done greatly in GW1, in GW2 they all seem 18 year old kids from their dialogues.

I’m kinda boggled by this, because this didn’t feel like how I saw it at all. The charr don’t talk like cavemen other than the guttural growl they have, they talk like they spare very little nonsense to words. If they talk, they have something to say and it’s as precise as they can get the words to fit. They do not waste time flattering you.

The asura are far from my favorites but they seem . . . exactly as goofy as they were during post Eye of the North material. (The trial you had to sit through . . . ) I don’t like them any more, or any less, I just really want to throttle Zojja and beat her head against Mr. Sparkles.

Not much to say on the humans. They’re more in the background than in GW1 but that was always a given. They know it, too. But listening to small dialogues around the world, two things stand out: there’s only two male voices and they sound alike . . . and they’re generally very grim in outlook if they’re not in a city.

Tybalt and the Asura are the only good things about the personal storyline. You’d rather have more Trehearne and Logan?

That depends, teen angsty Logan? No, thank you. Logan snarking? (“Oh, no, please, it’s the White Mantle! Woe is me.”) Yes. Yes. Yes.

And while I liked Trahearne enough to get by, I think he should be fading back out of the story.

The one thing that did annoy me was how my character, although he was second in command, seemed to have gotten pushed out of the story, maybe my memories a bit off but towards the end I don’t think he was even referred to much, he was just sitting in the background.

At the very least, since I’m left with this feeling it’s not a good sign anyway.

No, no he was given ample praise at “The Source of Orr” even as Trahearne purified the spring. I have screenshots :P

I’d actually like it if ascended items remain on the trinket side of the inventory, but since ANet already said that more types of ascended items will be rolled out through the year, it’s already a certainty that we’ll be seeing ascended armors soon enough.

Well, it’s possible? But they had said that before rolling out the Amulets and now the Accessories. Hopefully they complete this with alternate ways of earning Back pieces and call it complete.

I feel a little annoyed because the Order of Whispers seemed like such a kitten, shadowy underworld organization like The Dark Brotherhood… and they turned out to be a ragtag bunch of goofballs. I guess I was expecting something different.

To be fair, I think it’s just Tybalt that’s a goofball. Doern seems very serious and some of the other field agents you can locate out in the field are also rather serious about their jobs.

I still sort of agree, they don’t feel quite as . . . hmm, mysterious and intriguing as they were back when they came out of nowhere in Nightfall to basically go: “We know who you are, we know what you’re fighting, and we know you are thoroughly screwed unless you listen very closely to what our Master has to say to you.”

Of course, you weren’t on the inside then, and while I was somewhat irked by the levity, it’s almost warranted after the preceding chapter in either charr or human storyline. It also doesn’t last long.

I dunno, part of me realizes I built my human ranger to be Charming/Dignified and he’d probably have some levity. On the other hand, my charr warrior is Dignified/Ferocious so he would absolutely want to dunk Tybalt’s head in the bay telling him to shape up.

. . . that’s why he went Vigil.

Well . . . two options there without necessarily rewriting the items but just adding a flag to the target check.

Hi All,
Here is the reply to the second question:
E2:Ascended gears are making a lot of people worry about an ever-increasing gear treadmill. Many players did not want the exotic/legendary system to change, and they don’t like ascended gears. Was this expected? Can this be something fixed in a painless way? Can it happen?
Yes the response was definitively expected. We did not intent for the information to come out this way. Going back to my previous answer the issue is that we believe in the vertical progression system we had pre launch and that the introduction of an element into the system post launch was going to cause concern but something we believe in. That is why there is no plan for new Rarity Tiers of loot but there are plans to enhance or gain items within the existing rarity design whose properties continue on a shallow power curve. This said we certainly don’t want to create a system where itemization blocks progression in the game globally and we also need to be careful of this in areas such as FotM if the primary reward isn’t available elsewhere in the game. So in short its an exciting problem but one that has been poorly communicated and handled.
And for this i take responsibility and apologies. However the future of this philosophy and the design challenges it throws up are going to lead to a pioneering world and one that we are very excited about.
So anyway i kind of went of topic here so in short. We don’t intend to have an item rarity gear treadmill, we intend for the progression for gaining these rewards to have lots of different avenues for different types of player and where possible lower no fun grind within the whole of the game.
I hope this answers that question. I will be right back.
Chris

Yeah, that’s what I recall seeing. Interesting and I wonder how they handle it . . . some part expects me to see them do that via upgrade slot items.

-snip- to those who seem to be misinformed about ascended gear, its is the final rarity, not the final tier, it was stated there would be additional tiers within rarities in the future. -snip-

To those who’s been asking about where this information is quoted from – I think there might be a slight misunderstanding. From what I understand, ArenaNet will introduce other ascended gear items for the other slots in the future, not neccesarliy other tiers within the ascended quality level. Kindly correct me if I’m wrong. Here is quote from Chris Whiteside:

Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.

Does that mean we’ll get new tiers/quality levels in say, 6 months … a year … more? I don’t think you can discount that possibility since player progression seems to be something that’s always on their minds. However, as it stands, it looks like Legendary will eventually become BIS for all slots, and (hopefully) that’s were it will end.

Thanks, but that’s not what I was recalling as the quoted material. It’s relevant, but I do recall someone saying at one point that they could potentially add more, but had no plans to.

Karma was an ingenious system that has now been thrown to the waist side.

It was far too easily gamed by people and was thus highly subject to inflation. Seriously, that’s one of the big problems with it.

They could have combined karma with other currency to acquire gear.

For example: 200k karma + 40 skill points; 100k Karma + 50 ecto; 250k Karma + 5 gold; 200k Karma + 500 dungeon tokens.

They had options…but instead chose to time gate.

Most of those . . . not all but most, were subject to just as much farming as Karma was. Especially gold and Ectoplasm.

Given that, it’s a thorny problem about “how much of the existing currency do we expect people to have on hand?” This high Influence cost for the Guild Missions is a symptom of guessing wrong on that score.

The only mistake the devs really made was launching the game before they implemented ascended gear. 99% of these complaints wouldn’t exist if ascended gear was in at launch. The whole vertical progression wasn’t a thing until after launch is just plain dumb. I know I didn’t start with level 80 exotics. I had to vertically progress through 80 levels and 5 gear tiers before I hit the max.

… because 99% of the people that complain about ascended gear would never have bothered to get involved…

I don’t think that’s a good solid look at what’s being said. If Ascended tier items had been in the game from the start . . .

- They wouldn’t feel as though they were crammed in there and then slowly added as new things were being added. They’d be there in a whole and finished state, and very likely not earned in this . . . haphazard fashion which looks to be something implemented poorly.

- There wouldn’t be as big a notice of them being added after Exotic, it would just be “the top tier past Exotics”. There wouldn’t be a feeling of “for two months I’ve been at the best in my Exotic gear and now I’m suddenly not”. It would simply be “I have Ascended gear and now I’ve got the best in the game”.

- It wouldn’t have been “added grind” as far as it was called in November, nor would it have been “gear treadmill creep” since it would have existed from the words “the servers are now live”. It would have existed, and been part of the game like Exotics were.

( N.B. there were comments about how hard Exotic was to acquire as well, that I saw once upon a time. )

In short, if they’d always been in the game . . . it wouldn’t be what we are seeing now, it would be something mechanically different. Better? Worse? Who knows, but a lot of the complaints probably wouldn’t be valid if they weren’t added post-launch.

One really ugly option which has a couple frustrating moments, and the other seems to have the Swamp Fractal queued up just for me, every time I play it. So, well, I don’t do one and I do the other with guild members so we can laugh about “great balls of fire” and assorted puns.

Also, seems to me he’s talking about combat being boring and “I stand there and swing like it’s a pinata”. Aaaaand that’s usually a good way to get flattened. So no, they don’t want you doing that. No lie, move along.

I think Anet took an arrow to the knee when they stopped making the references. What you think guies?

I think they’re doing a decent job of pulling a Boromir, as opposed to a Ned Stark. It’s better than pulling a Sharpe, I suppose; that could turn people away in a hurry.

I don’t know what expansions they’ve played, but this is hype at best. This is not expansion worth of depth and systems.

From his response earlier, it sounded like a Marketing driven idea to say those things:

Saying something like “expansions worth of content” means different things to everyone, and is nearly an impossible goal to meet expectation wise since everything expects something different, which is a big part of why marketing stepped away from that plan very quickly after asking us to use it when speaking to the press/fans.

It doesn’t sound to me like he agreed with their idea.

It sounds as though marketing got pulled aside by some developer(s) and . . .

. . . got a patiently and well-reasoned explanation of why this was probably way too much to suggest for them to work on, and that maybe they should reconsider it.

Reading this conversation, I think of Colin’s article back when when he referenced Quest For Glory. The Quest For Glory games (like all of the Sierra quest games) had a very serious plot, but it wasn’t about to be above making fun of itself.

To me it seems that Tyria is very similar to that as a world, though unlike Sierra, ANet tends to try to avoid making pop culture references in their world. Mind you, my Asura warrior wouldn’t mind taking a couple of classes from FA’s correspondence school!

ANet used to make all kinds of references, but then they . . .

No, I’m not doing that meme.

They just seemed to decide it wasn’t entirely necessary. It could be funny that month, but given the ephemeral nature of pop culture it would look dated pretty fast.

Have they pulled the GW1 servers and I didn’t hear about it? What’s with the nostalgia?

No, the servers are still active, I was on them last night. It’s just that there’s much fewer people playing.

Personally, I don’t mind the jokes. TBH I consider the entire Charr and Asura races to be complete comic relief along with the ooze king. Charr are just furry versions of Warhammer 40k’s Orks, stupid but their belief in their own creations are the reason why they work.

Charr are actually quite intelligent and capable of complex thought. It’s just, how do I put this . . .

When you have the option of overwhelming force to solve a problem . . . and it generally works? You tend to start viewing it as the best answer since it rarely fails.

Also, from what little I read of the spaceborne Orks, that’s really a bad comparison all around.

Be careful, it’s not a simple matter to add depth to a game. Many try and instead make the game more complex instead.

To be honest? The longer I see what “the players” think by browsing Reddit and the forums the more I wonder: “Why do I enjoy this game? Clearly I’m supposed to hate it.” Then I spend a few minutes logging in and chatting with my guild and remember they’re why I enjoy the game.

I too agree that adding more in-game currencies and tokens is ridiculous, but it’s now as dramatic as people make it sound. The problem is that it’s not intuitive and as the OP said it’s hard on new and casual players.

Nicholas was the Daily of GW1. I rather liked hit, it was like getting 5 RNG Lion chests for some random effort. It was a good twist over all, but nothing overly impressive.

Zaishen Missions were the Dailies of GW1, Nicholas was a “Weekly”

My bad. I didn’t really do all of them, there were missions and bounties that I hated in general.

Zaishen Bounty: “Kill Rotscale”
/guild: “So who wants to do the bounty?”
- crickets -
/guild “Yeah, didn’t think so. I got this one for Myrish of the Lake from a couple days ago who wants in on that?”

In my first character I chose the Order of Whispers because I assumed (wrongly as it turned out) that it was going to be a story arc with intrigue, betrayal and maybe even “making though choices” as agent Ihan claims, instead I got the silliest story in the game with Disney secret agent Tybalt guiding me from goofy adventure to goofy adventure.

This was my only issue with Tybalt. We were given a grinning, semi-goofy guy and I had just come off Agent Ihan who had been all business. I could stand it because it was somewhat endearing and fun to play out. I just imagined my character thinking to himself “I signed up for this . . . I took down a corrupt leader in the Seraph and avenged Falcon Company’s loss, and now I’m doing a drinking contest with pirates.”

And the whisper of my character’s long-long ancestor going:

“You know, Jurah would have never stood for this. He had no trouble putting that buffoon Norgu in his place.”

As a member of a tiny guild (3-4 active members out of 10-12 total), I have had a talk with my guildleader, and we decided to try an experiment.

We are going to upgrade the guild in order to unlock guild bounties, spending gold if necessary to acquire the needed Influence. Once Guild Bounties are unlocked, we will start Bounty Missions on a regular basis, and we will post announcements on our game server that anyone who wants to get the rewards can become members of our guild for the duration of the bounty, for a small fee (perhaps 1 silver). At the end of the mission, all temporary members will be removed from the guild.

The participation fee is intended to earn back (over time) our investment in buying the influence in the first place. In return, we would be providing a service to the players on our server who would otherwise have no access to guild missions, giving them a chance to experience this content, and to acquire Guild Commendations and other rewards.

Any opinions on whether you believe this experiment could work?

It could work, but you’re going to get flak for charging.

I agree in a way. The humor in GW1 was intelligent.

I counter with one quest:
“Drakes on a Plain”.

I’ll follow up with
“Hapless Chong” and “Hai Len” from Canthan New Year

And one final poke with:

“Grandfather Kringle” and “Elder Skruuj”.

No, there was stuff in Guild Wars 1. If I looked hard enough I bet there’s a few in Prophecies I could pull up.

It’s like somebody else is writing it now. I liked Tybalt but it would have been better if he were more like Pyre in GW1… the charr, like the asuras, are trivialized and made a butt of stupid jokes about eating meat.

That’s strange, I just finished my charr’s first three chapters of personal story and they were very serious, starting off with:
- Your warband destroyed down to one other member.
- Your Blood Legion superior basically kicking you while you’re down, then goading you into insubordination.
- An arena match to prove you’re worthy of leadership.
- Building your own warband back up.
- Taking out a Flame Legion attack with artillery and sniper support.
- Throttling a Haven full of ‘Scrappers’ to get your own back.
- Having to deal with one of your dead warband mates becoming a Risen, then put him down personally.

I’m not seeing any of this as “a joke”.

Furthermore, there’s the constant Separtist sorties in Diessa Plateau against settlements which truly can be destructive, a giant who cleans house in Nageling needing practically a small army to put down, the Dragonbrand . . .

No, the charr are not a joke in and of themselves but they are the butt of some jokes. So are the other races, which I can go into if you like.

In GW1 the humor itself was serious, as good humor really is.

I present you one last example: Mad King Thorn.

In Guild Wars 2 he was a far more serious and threatening presence than he was before. And all he had to do was corrupt bits of Lion’s Arch and sow hints he was coming back until he was a multi-phase boss fight. After which he was too weak to do more than crack jokes again.

That isn’t exclusive enough. If there is content that only big guilds can do and be rewarded for… then they need to be excluded from things that small guilds can do and be rewarded for. Otherwise it would be terribly terribly abused… big guilds would do their big guild only content and receive the rewards… then run around raking in tons of currency doing all the “small guild” stuff too…

I’m compelled to ask two questions:

- What stops a large guild from having smaller groups of people do small-guild content? They always could before, there’s practically no way of telling.

- Why does it seem to have a burning need to punish a guild for getting too large? From the ire being heaped at them simply for being large, isn’t there social punishment enough?

We should be figuring out ways of inclusion and not new ways to throw up fences, here . . .

You obviously missed my sarcasm font.

I’ll point you back to the first dozen or so pages of this discussion and the original thread that was deleted. I’ve been in this debate and aware of the issues from the very beginning. Welcome to the party.

The idea of satire is to use rhetoric and hyperbole to point out flaws in the subject of your attentions. When done right… your satire can seem to be a serious attempt at discussion, that causes others to point out all the places you went wrong (thereby using them as rhetorical tools to reinforce the points you wished to make)… without falling into the trap of sounding aggressive, angry, or ridiculous.

The point I want to make is pretty much how you responded. There should be no burning need to punish (or even separate) guilds by size or playstyle. Rewards can be higher in quantity… but should never be better in quality. Content for large guilds should always have a small guild equivalent.

On the subject of rewards having higher quantity… I would even caution against that… this is supposed to be content for large guilds to do together… not a function of farming more or better rewards. Don’t give anyone an unfair advantage. The advantage of a large guild should be in having the opportunity to enjoy large scale content and large scale group dynamics… not earn rewards that no one else can earn, or see content “faster” or “before” anyone else can.

Yeah, I missed your sarcasm font. I have this thing in Chrome and Safari which automatically converts it to Arial. I should really turn that off.

I’ve also been in this before the content launched, but mostly the voice going: “But it’s not out yet, can we wait until it hits and we see what it exactly is before we go to the rooftops?” And the hopeful “maybe it won’t be so bad”.

It’s pretty bad if you look at it from “getting to it immediately”, though I can attribute that to the devs missing the range on “small guilds” and what Influence they should have. They overestimated for the initial unlock cost. Of course, if you take it as a “long term goal” then it’s much less onerous . . . though still, in some cases, over-costed due to that misconception of “small guild” to mean able to field 10-15 people.

I think the complaints are because it was not adequately stated it was a long term thing . . . if it was, if they had said “we’d like to see the majority of guilds reaching this in a couple months” or “it’ll take some time to reach all the Mission types” then people would have known what to expect.
