The best part about dailies is you don’t have to do them. Or you can. It’s up to you, just like anything else in this game. You don’t have a full set of ascended stuff? No problem. There is nothing that can’t be done without them.
Fractals requires Ascended gear for further progression. If it wasn’t for that, you would be right.
You don’t need ascended gear until level 20ish. And fractals are also optional, nothing in the game is mandatory unless having best in slot gear is mandatory to you.
Leaving the tutorial area is completely optional as well.
And there are some people who never left it or Pre-Searing Ascalon (before there was a title). People are weird sometimes.
Yeah, I’m swinging by Orr tonight and checking this out.
This is like realizing you have an essay due today, but you did absolutely nothing with it for the whole month it was assigned. Then, you complain to the teacher that it was too much work and there was no way you could knock it out in a day, despite its design to have been completed in a months effort.
Well, that depends on the reason “absolutely nothing” was done. If it was because . . . as happened once . . . I have pressing family issues which eat up all my time? Or as was the case with an acquaintance where in the middle of the semester his company folded under and he had to go search for work?
Of course, in both cases, I asked the professor if it was preferable I drop the course or get an extension. They suggested dropping.
What motivates me to play . . .
Boredom, mostly. A desire to do something other than watch what network television tries to tell me I want to watch? And of course, the fact most of the people in my generation would rather do really stupid self-destructive things for fun that I don’t find entertaining at all?
I mean, I also really like the world design and the feel of it. That counts for some of it, because otherwise I’d be playing something else. Like combing through my old CD-roms and digging out some game I enjoyed beating into past eighteen ways, and inventing #19
well can anyone tell me this, I have 4/5 of the completionist thing done, and its the 28th today, will I still be able to finish my last one after daily reset today at 6pm central? oris that when the monthly will reset as well?
That depends on when the Monthly flips over. Somehow I expect it to flip tomorrow at 6pm central.
There is no difference between having a quest NPC tell you to “kill 10 centaurs” and have a daily objective of “10 underwater kills” – THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE.
Actually, there is a very real difference. The 10 centaurs in those other games are always in a fairly small area. The centaurs on the other side of the hill don’t count. GW2 underwater kills can be obtained in any zone that has water deep enough.
. . . you forget also that if you killed 400 centaurs before being asked to kill those specific ten centaurs, they wouldn’t count at all.
Also, is now a good time to bring up Renown Hearts and how they work almost exactly as you suggested about “the centaurs on the other side of the hill don’t count”?
Honestly, I would probably be satisfied if one of the developers could sit and explain the reasoning which went into the pricing, the target invested time/Influence, and why “Art of War”, and addressed the larger pieces of the concerns.
Yes please. Pro transparency!
It’s not even about transparency for everyone else, this is a selfish desire to know “just why you put the cost and methods in just that way”. For when I win the lottery and have money to apply to building my own RPG :P
“Who are the Daily Achievements intended for?”
Let me answer it simply and to the point. The daily achievements are for the good citizens of Tyria who are following the path of the power curve laid out for them by Anet. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course, the temporal aspect encourages people to login and play and the achievements provide a daily sense of accomplishment on your way to your future fun reward.
What about those of us who aren’t good citizens in that we don’t run Fractals, we don’t do sPvP, we rarely do WvW, we run dungeons mostly with a guild group, and aren’t rabidly fanatical about getting Ascended trinkets?
. . . who also don’t have a problem with the new system?
Wait . . .
Wait, were they significantly buffed since yesterday? I’ll need to check after I get done with my work this evening.
Honestly, I would probably be satisfied if one of the developers could sit and explain the reasoning which went into the pricing, the target invested time/Influence, and why “Art of War”, and addressed the larger pieces of the concerns.
. . . I mean, satisfied that there was a very clear answer. I am not 100% satisfied with the content, but then I can get over that.
And of course, like always, they have people who defend them doing this. Claiming you have the choice to not do it. That is a lame excuse.
No, not really lame. Incomplete analysis perhaps, but valid. Now, here’s the heart of why people say it is optional and you don’t have to do it. I’ll present this in a question/answer format so we can see where the thread goes.
Q: What, exactly, do you lose out on not doing the Daily?
A: Some silver, a Jug of Instant Karma (4500 Karma), a Mystic Coin, and one Laurel for each day.
Q: Why do you need these?
A: Silver supplements other coin income, the Jug highly supplements Karma gain as it is more efficient than other methods of gaining Karma (and can be banked to be enriched via boosting items at a later time), the Mystic Coin is used in several Mystic Forge recipes, and the Laurels can be exchanged for Ascended items or other things.
Q: Out of all that, what can you not earn another way?
A: Mystic Coins and Laurels.
Q: Why do you require Mystic Coins?
A: For certain Mystic Forge recipes, most notably the ones which are on the way to a Legendary.
Q: Why do you require Laurels?
A: For readily accessible Ascended gear.
Q: Why do you require Ascended gear?
A: For the stat bonus over currently existing Exotic trinkets.
And here is the question which is often the focal point of either side:
Q: What can you do using Ascended trinkets that you cannot do with Exotic trinkets?
let me craft it as jeweler.
. . . here’s another interesting idea which needs some fleshing out.
. . . even as a Ranger I’m not getting terrible problems with Risen Nobles. Not talking the Veterans, just the normal ones.
Add amulets and accessories to the Fractal vendor for Pristine Relics.
Add all ascended gear to a WvW vendor for Badges of Honor.
The first one I really hope they do after they finish with getting the Trinkets fleshed out.
The second I am hesitant on, but it could work.
Problem is, I don’t know if people will get enough Badges/Relics to earn them.
Generally I make money just by not spending it. Doing DEs which are in my path and aren’t involving champions generally feed me a bit but . . .
- Throttle back spending as much as you can.
- If you see a rune/sigil in a piece of gear which drops, check it’s value on the trading post. You can make a lot if you can salvage it out.
- Sell your blue items instead of breaking them down. They should be approaching about 50-75 copper in value at your level.
- If you’re not ever planning on crafting, liquidate your crafting materials. Related? Always spend on gathering tools and gather materials to sell.
Sorry, but dailies are a HORRIBLE relic of daysgoneby. Just because WoW does it, doesn’t mean you guys should too.
They did do it, a while back. Look up “Zaishen Quests”.
And yes, it IS required. Obviously you don’t play at a high level or you would know that there is a LEGIT stat increase via Ascended gear(aferall, ANet themselves said it is the CURRENT MAX tier).
. . . it’s really weird. I’m now kitted out in full exotic and not having any trouble with content which is outside Fractals because my gear is too weak. I’m having problems because I suck, and because I’m a ranger, but not because the gear isn’t good enough.
@Tobias Trueflight: if you read all the post you can found a lot of great ideas, solutions and constructive comments. This is a discussion forum, is normal that not all the comments are constuctive.
I’ve read all the posts, though I haven’t kept every single one in mind all the time. I’ve responded to some of the constructive posts. But things keep getting into things which aren’t as constructive and it doesn’t encourage the devs to read everything.
And I know this is normal for a forum online, but right now this is the second-best alternative for actually getting people’s feedback and ideas. The best one (a live forum) has so many logistical problems and limitations it just wouldn’t work realistically.
I suspect ArenaNet created this thread to just let people vent. Doesn’t seem to serve any other purpose.
Of course it doesn’t. Why else would they start asking for our opinions & concerns only 4 days before the patch goes live? It’s just to create the illusion that they care. They couldn’t change anything anymore at this point.
Players had constructive criticism and they ignored pretty much 95% of it, now players are leaving and those who stay see that normal discussion is pointless.
Here are three examples as to why further discussion isn’t going to go anywhere. First, we have the sentiment that “they don’t care and aren’t listening”, an attitude which pretty much winds up marking any input tantamount to spitting into the wind. It doesn’t foster any meaningful discussion, it just stirs up negativity.
Secondly, especially the last one you can see here, it attributes to everyone one attitude in a blanket statement. This isn’t going to do anything but . . . again, stir up negativity and not allow anyone to make a point. It also asserts the “true players” are all gone inbetween the lines, so anyone who has anything positive to say must not be worth listening to.
The third thing all three posts does is present and consistently reinforce the sense of powerlessness. It entices people to believe they can’t do anything no matter what they say, so why bother posting their opinion? It paints any discussion as worthless, even the kind which could have constructive ideas.
Lastly, and perhaps most sadly, there’s posts which I didn’t quote which are basically just sniping at other comments and trying to tear down people rather than ideas. When the posters are led to think they’re powerless, that the devs don’t care, and that anyone who has anything nice to say isn’t worth listening to? This fourth sentiment grows stronger and stifles anything of any value.
Please, can we get constructive talk back in here?
I started out writing a longer post in response to this thread . . .
But then I probably realized if at any time I tried to offer my opinion I’d be told how wrong I am for not joining people wanting to escort some dev to the gallows.
I enjoyed reading the first post, but I think it’s a narrow and constrained look which winds up painting the dev team either incompetent or powerless. I don’t like the sentiment, but as I said . . . I know it’s popular enough that it’s pointless to say otherwise.
You know, now this thread is winding down and away from actually offering any kind of suggestions or study of the Guild Missions and breaking down into yet more complaints about how people conduct themselves. I don’t think this will last much longer.
Once again, I feel less like trying to chime in because what I have to say doesn’t matter or won’t be actually heard over the rest of it. Even trying to just keep conversation on topic is too much, because by the time I finished sleeping I see this thread has picked up more destructive sentiments than constructive ones.
I’m going back to building sandcastles in Minecraft, someone wake me when it’s over.
I find it interesting that this thread wound down after a bit over 1000 posts, and never even got close to the 11000 mark. Did we lose so many after November 15th? How many will be left to protest the next update?
It’s “wound down” as I put it because we’re no longer making any new points or suggestions. We’re just shouting at each other.
Mungrul raised a good point.
As a leader, if someone joins my guild just to get to participate in the guild events but doesn’t represent the guild to earn the influence required to start those events, he will get in trouble and will most likely get the boot if he doesn’t change is behavior.
I have a word for that kind of behavior – it’s called a “leech”. And I don’t like leeches. Want to benefit from the size of my guild? You better also participate in building it.
Like the stuff which followed from this.
Like the continuous “ArenaNet owes us answers, aren’t they even reading this?” even as four pages go up in eight hours.
That’s why it’s “winding down”. Not because people have stopped input but because the input isn’t being helpful to the discussion.
It’s an evolution for sure, but people wanted a revolution.
Ah yes, that’s the correct way to phrase it.
Here’s a problem. Evolution is very misunderstood as a culture . . .
Evolution is not simply becoming better, and never getting anything wrong. Evolution is filled with tons of dead-ends which didn’t work and died off. Evolution is life looking for some way of “winning” the long-term survival game.
Apply this to MMOs? Every game which builds off the previous offerings and doesn’t just wholesale copy how things work and add a little bow is “evolution” in action. The Old Republic was an evolution. World of Warcraft was an evolution. EverQuest was an evolution. Ultima Online was an evolution. EvE Online was an evolution.
A revolution is a highly destructive change which leaves things different from when they started out. It causes an intense period of upheaval under which a lot . . . a lot of people get hurt. By its nature, it is relatively easy to start but rather difficult to follow through on.
A revolution is not what people, instinctively, want. Interestingly enough, they do want the familiar, they want the safe, and they want things they know how to deal with. Throwing them into the unknown has them struggling to make sense of it in a way they are familiar with and looking for things which resemble what they know. Landmarks in a sense.
Guild Wars 2 is an evolution, but for smaller touches here and there which work rather well in theory. I can’t wait to see in five years what can be traced back to this game as the inspiration for whatever comes next.
I’m going back to building sandcastles in Minecraft, someone wake me when it’s over.
but its just guild influence.
thats not personal. but guild related.
surely many people will ignore that and feel not left out.
Guild Influence is almost worse than Laurels for this, because now you pull in the people who are upset about the cost of Guild Missions now to complain about being “forced” to do the full Daily list.
I really think you’re just not getting it. Any tangible reward at all is going to be seen as necessary to keep up with other players and thus it is being forced on them to do all nine Daily categories.
No, you’re not asking too much from just looking at it in and of itself.
Yes, you’re asking too much knowing the attached history to this whole Daily Achievement thing. We’ve been over this time and time again. If you offer anything people aren’t going to think you can stop at 5/9 and be done. They’re going to think you have to do all nine to be competitive.
5/9 > laurel and karma
9/9 > mystic coin? That would make those worthless coins a bit more important.
Those coins aren’t quite as worthless as you might think. They do have uses, in large quantities.
There’s just so many in the system, it doesn’t make sense anymore.
Look up on the wiki what they’re used for. The recipes call for a fair amount to be used, so I’m not actually SURE how many are still out there.
Now, if only it wasn’t in a volume which smothered the zones on some servers . . .
Be grateful its active.
Believe me, I’m at least somewhat grateful but as is so ever present in an MMO – the answer to a problem often leads to another problem.
5/9 > laurel and karma
9/9 > mystic coin? That would make those worthless coins a bit more important.
Those coins aren’t quite as worthless as you might think. They do have uses, in large quantities.
Given there was a period where asuran gates used Primordius’ power to work, wouldn’t it be . . . say, likely that the dragon can actually reach through them? You know, unless the basic theory and design has vastly been changed over the years.
Dead lowbie zones were a common complaint, and posed a serious threat to their ability to keep new players. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was intentional, or if it was unintentional that they’re pleasantly happy with the results.
I believe it was not the direct intention, but perhaps what they hoped to achieve. Now, if only it wasn’t in a volume which smothered the zones on some servers . . .
I’m going to reiterate something I said in another thread, and other people have brought up:
You are now asking to reinforce behavior many people are loudly upset over. The other topic was over “bonuses for doing the complete Daily list instead of just five”.
Any proposed “guild loyalty” reward will, and I actually will touch on hyperbole now . . . it will cause “100% Represent” to be a rule instead of a guideline, even if it’s never explicitly stated to be part of the guild rules.
I get what you are going for, I really do. It can be frustrating for people to min/max any system you put in front of them for their sole benefit. (See: “Magic Find at the expense of survival ability”, “how to farm Cursed Shore for 10G/day”, “a walkthrough on how to do your Daily in thirty minutes”, and “how to ride the bleeding edge of the Trading Post Market” . . .)
But this? This winds up performing a potentially bad situation . . . it will reward people for exclusion and for simply (and definitively) throwing away one of the more interesting features of Guild Wars 2. (Even if it’s quite clunky and not quite useful in and of itself.)
So let me get this straight.
Everyone is in the mega-thread about the Guild Missions talking about how they can’t use large guilds’ support due to the 100% representation requirement of many, which basically means you need to give up your old guild in all but actual clicking free . . .
You now want to reinforce that attitude with game mechanics? Of things that could make this whole mess get worse, this rates up there with limiting Guild Mission tiers by guild member count.
If anything was going to be offered as a bonus for 9/9? I’d make it a Black Lion Key and that’s it. No Karma, no Silver. Small, sweet, not too unbalancing.
And that’s if I was convinced it was needed. I’m not. I’m convinced it’s a terrible idea to put even the smallest carrot up after the 5/9 Daily mark, because then people will think they have to do it to stay ahead of other people. I’m not sure if you’re just not quite getting that or you’re focused on your own desire for a reason to go further . . . but . . .
No, please no. Things are designed a way for a reason, and when they’re revamped twice then there’s even more reason behind it.
Deimos . . . no. You’re asking for way, WAY too good a reward now instead of just asking for a reward. Please, think about what you’re proposing before you start.
Literally all they have to do to make lower level content more appealing is make mobs drop crafting mats appropriate to your level. I want t5-t6 mats, not t1-t4.
This is not a good idea, and would hurt everyone except those who already are past the need for T1-T4 crafting materials.
@goldenwing
I’m not concerned about that, I understand that some people just don’t want to leave a guild they enjoy being a part of without substantially good reason. No. . . right now I’m concerned of two things. One of them has to do with this update and one with a reaction to it.
First, I’m not pleased with the cost in time/Influence. I anticipated it being “Art of War 5 and you’re set”, not another cost on top of it. It’s “a bit much” in my parlance, which translates to “oh my that’s a big chunk”. The costs for the rest of the unlocks tell me this is very much intended to be content which isn’t munched quickly but done over a longer period of time. Now I could be wrong and the intent could be for every guild in existence to drop $400 on gems and convert them through to Influence so they can get started. However, no matter what people here say I really don’t think ArenaNet would expect people to do that . . . not that they’d discourage it, naturally. (Let’s not delude ourselves? They are a business and the system is in place to funnel cash into influence should someone be that driven.)
The other concern is how people are reacting now, and it’s a throwback to when Ascended Gear came out BOTH times thus far. There are two sides forming who aren’t talking with each other about it, they’re screaming at each other thinking if they get louder and more abrasive then their message will get through. We’ve had examples of truly awesome cases made against this new system, or at least to revamp it so it possibly could work better.
(Look, I’m not sure the proposed solutions can work out without more tweaking done to them. I’m not saying they wouldn’t work at all.)
Can we please get someone to make an eloquent case FOR the current system without the name-calling or the rancor being thrown around? I’d do it except I’m not sure I could do it justice.
Thank you for not reading what I had to say and missing the point.
I run guild events for my guild everyday, We have a calendar system , that can even be subscribed to and commented on. I post a reminder about the event on the websites guild chat (few hours) and in game chat (an hour) before the event is to begin. This has us having full guild groups and overflow of people wanting to join my party, so we also some times make 2 or 3 groups to parallel run the dungeon or meta event in the open world at the same time.
My issue is not with having guild missions, my issue is just because a guild has 20 people online at the same time, does not mean 20 people are going to want to do the same thing. 5 people want to do a dungeon, 3 people want to do dailies, 7 people want to World vs World. They are all playing together, but doing different things.
Just because I have 20 people online in the guild and I post my guild event an hour ahead of time, does not mean those 20 people are going to join in the guild bounty mission. This is reality I was speaking of, real people, playing the game, not some employees being paid to participate in guild mission testing for the day.
The cold hard facts are even my guild with 50+ active members logging in, will have to work at it. I have no issue with putting effort into guild missions and unlocking them. I work hard to keep my community functioning for the last 5 years. I am merely pointing out that the system and the way people play is not exactly how Anet thinks it is.
I am not sure if their tracking system actually keeps track of who is logging in to the game, which guild they are in, or who they are representing at any given time or even if guild members are playing with one another, but it should.
The current system is flawed and improvements need to made, and adjusted.
That is all our concerns are about, no one is saying get rid of it, or hand it out.The expectations and the outcome was not what Anet thought it was going to be, as a developer you do not make for yourself, but for the users.
Did Microsoft keep making Windows Vista when everyone hated it? No, they improved upon it and made the better with Windows 7, even though we all know it is still basically Vista.
First, I’m not sure I missed your point, and I’m not sure my comment was taken seriously. I really do think they anticipated the Missions to be events a guild would sit down and plot out a time for since they take such a significant effort. Similar, mind you to an “Urgoz’s Warren Trip”, perhaps? Getting 12 people together and doing the challenge mission way back when? I know my alliance had to actually plan a date a week or two ahead of time to make sure schedules synced up. That’s where I’m coming from with the comment “maybe they expected people to announce and plan ahead rather than just go and turn it on”.
Secondly, I know this is a flawed system. I can see the flaws in it, one of which being the entry cost. (I have not stated otherwise – it’s a significant cost to put into this, both time and ‘money’.) Another is the difficulty of the missions, which I heard was something like 7 targets in 15 minutes at Tier 3. I don’t think that’s really credible for a “small guild” even if you had five true legends of the game involved. Sure, they could probably do it – in six months I half expect to see that like I can see “solo lupicus” videos.
Lastly, I don’t know much about Vista, I do know your example is better seved with “Millenium Edition” since we were pretty much left with Vista for a while before Win7 was released. I wouldn’t know too much . . . I’m ashamed to admit I got used to and enjoy Mac OSX currently.
Anyone else wants to hear an official statement that explains how they might want to change it (if they want to change it)? And not just a short answer but a fully detailed one? So that we get the feeling that they actually do care about the community?
I am always very disheartened when the request for a reply is phrased like the question: “have you stopped beating your wife yet?” It doesn’t invite an answer, it just invites a cold stare until either you slink off or they have to go to the restroom.
Over 80 members participated and we had 7 commanders where we could rally to if one was found. We had 2 seconds left on the timer. So yes it’s very challenging. .
80 and only got it by 2 seconds ouch do you think you would be faster next time or is getting these done even for a large guild a crap shoot?
I’m guessing familiarity will help it go quicker.
Congratulations. Mind if I ask some questions for information?
What hints did you get to point you to the targets, since you have a limited time to go get them?
How much effort did it take to do each tier, that is, find the targets?
He’s a depressed necromancer. It fits nicely.
I miss the Diablo 2 necromancer. Depressed he was not. Grim yes, depressed no.
Am I the only one who doesn’t hate Trahearne? He’s more like a burdened sylvari unsure of his destiny, who only found hope to succeed with your help. He can command all he wants – fort trinity knows I’m the real hero. Besides, I’m mainly sylvari. He would never have gotten that sword if it wasn’t for me. :p
The only thing I hate is how ambiguous the missions can be…“Wait, I didn’t agree to that! Bad Idea! Why did no one tell me this?!”
Read the thread, as much as you can. I like the concept of the character. I have issue with how he kind of drops in if you’re not Sylvari, but I don’t hate him. I think the hate over “stealing your glory” is way . . . way unfounded . . .
Though I still think the voice director needed something different for the sylvari than slightly flat vocals.
Captain Langmar.
Failing that? Going back in time to that day when the Searing was about to begin with four friends and just as the cauldron is about to go off, we kick it over and start absolutely tearing apart the charr gathered there like they were the grawl’s inbred cousins.
The OP makes a strange argument.. diving in the water and having to stay there for Aquatic Slayer was ‘working on my daily’
Killing stuff in Shiverpeaks yesterday while I search for new story stuff was ‘Playing the game’ …
I know which I prefer, and i’m glad I get a choice. (DIAF Aquatic slayer :P )
I got Aquatic Slayer while in a guild group at Frostgorge, tagging along behind them as they showed off some points of interest, a jumping puzzle, where the Ancient Wood was . . . and just killing everything I came across. Which is kinda what I do anyway.
You don’t have to like it, but you have to be motivated to do it. The most frequent complaint on these forums is that something is not fun. The simple question to ask here is: “Why do you play it if you don’t like it?” They don’t like it, yet they spend considerable time playing it and complaining on forums on their off-hours. Seriously, read about B.F. Skinner’s experiment. These MMO makers have hit behavioral gold vein here.
No, I complain and chat on the forums in my off-hours because it amuses me and rarely I might have a point I wish to make. It also kills time until my meds kick in.
So, I do present the question to you, since you seem to be a behavioral psych major or something similar . . . if I don’t feel compelled to play the game out of a sense of “I need to have these rewards” but “I want to get on and see what my friends are up to”, did the Skinner Box fail?
Does anyone even have the new guild missions unlocked yet? I thought it takes 3 days to unlock.
Was it possible to speed it up and have it unlocked last night?
Yes. And it was done so. And someone even sped up the start of a Bounty and had it bug up on them.
Praise their sacrifice of Influence that the bug was squashed :P
Why should a playstyle choice be rewarded over another, equally viable playstyle?
Apparently, my choice is a poor one in terms of rewards.
Apparently, my way of having fun is less worthy of loot.
Apparently, this game is not fair.Apparently, you have never tried WvW.
You mean “oh my god how are we losing that much ground again this week and it’s only day one?” WvW? You mean the “son of a karka I need Stonemist still” WvW?
Yeah . . . Fair is not necessarily part of the game by default.
It’s part of behavioral psychology. Phenomenon called operant conditioning:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operant_conditioning
I don’t think that applies here.
I’m pretty sure ANet said that other people would be able to help out any guild’s mission. I’m assuming that means you’ll be able to fill your large group needs from the general public.
Not unlike LFG right now…except with better payoff. And a chance to meet new folks?
How about you give it chance before spouting off about what it “might” mean? No one really knows at this point.
Yes, other people can help in guild missions. But no, these other people will not receive any special rewards, just experience, silver and karma. Other people will also know that guild members will receive guild commendations, rares/exotics and a lot more coin for a mission. Some people have already stated on this forum that they will refuse to help if the game doesn’t give them equal rewards.
Of course, that is assuming that a (smallish) guild can even muster the 80,000+ influence necessary to level up Art of War and Unlock Guild Bounty.
There are some people who in game have said “even if you guaranteed me a Precursor I wouldn’t lift one finger to help out a Guild Bounty”.
