Boon Thieves (Fractals) is badly designed

Vagrant.7206

The problem is you have to adapt to how you play. If you can’t adapt this instability will be much harder.

Hammer guardians are the worst for this instability. As you pointed out with the light field is less than have the problem. The protection up times hammer guard gives bosses is huge. The boss fights take nearly 30% longer without boon strip.

So adapt.

Here’s the thing. I do adapt.

The problem is that it is easier (for me) to not take a guardian in the first place. When PUGging, why shouldn’t I just exclude all guardians and make my life simpler? Instead of hoping for a boon stripping necro?

Engineers aren’t the only ones that can trigger the retaliation — any class with a blast finisher or leap finisher (light aura) can create retaliation. By excluding guardians (who are the primary producers of light fields), I can avoid the problem altogether. I’ve gotten into way too many arguments with guardians (who didn’t understand combo fields) to stop using light fields to even bother with the class as a whole.

And that’s the point of this thread. I have a perverse incentive to simply exclude a class from playing high level fractals with me. Not because I have anything against people who play that class, but because that class itself is a liability.

as an engineer, i just play reaper instead and corrupt the retal instead of generate it.

But it’s kind of a problem when one of the classes simply cannot be in the party just because of negative synergy.

Boon Thieves (Fractals) is badly designed

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Vagrant.7206

I need to preface this. The Instability: Boon Thieves is a mistlock instability on high level fractals (81-100). Enemies can steal up to 5 boons every 20 seconds. Before the last major patch, this wasn’t really noticed because most people didn’t play past level 77.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mistlock_Instability:_Boon_Thieves

I primarily play on my engineer. As anybody who mains engineer can attest, combo fields are critical to the functioning of the class. Many of the engineer’s skills include finishers, particularly blast finishers. On my bar right now are at least 4 blast finishers which I use frequently for CC and DPS. Blast finishers can be great for stacking might, stealth, weakness, blasting healing, and a few other things.

Now, while I don’t play guardian too much, a large chunk of their skills are light fields. Some weapons, such as hammer, have light fields included in guardian’s autoattacks. Many light fields are integral for a guardian’s DPS, and some are useful for team survivability (such as wall of reflection).

The problem comes when you combine the two classes: Engineers with lots of blast finishers, and guardians with lots of light fields. The result is lots of retaliation buffs on people, by virtue of the two classes tendency for this combination. In normal play, this isn’t actually a problem, and is instead a good thing.

But in Fractals, we have the switcharoo from ANet. The Boon Thieves instability causes enemy AI to steal up to 5 of your team’s boons every 20 seconds whenever they hit a team member (which is quite frequently). The result is that when guardians and engineers play together, inevitably the bosses or minibosses get retaliation as a result. I’ve seen retaliation wipe a skilled team in less than five seconds, because retaliation is more effective against numerous small skills than heavy hitting skills.

This one instability has caused more arguing and bickering amongst skilled players than any other effect I’ve seen in the game. We have two classes that are literally pitted against each other due to this one instability — Engineers either have to give up blast finishers (which severely hampers kit usage and DPS rotations), or Guardians have to give up light fields (which severely hampers DPS, and often forces specific weapon usage). The teams that manage this problem the best tend to either have a guardian who only places light fields in carefully selected spots, or engineers who intentionally hamstring themselves by being overly cautious with their blast finishers.

ANet, you have created a situation in which two classes are in direct conflict with each other. As an engineer, I’m almost giddy when I don’t see a guardian on my fractal team. This is poor design — I should be happy to see people on my team, regardless of class. Please find a way to address this. Perhaps exclude retaliation from boon thieves or have boon thieves not apply to bosses/minibosses.

Well, this was partly owing to the fact that there was no reason to run high level fractals in the past (besides Swamptals of the Mists).

The pendulum was swung very hard towards low levels for a while, and now it seems it has swing really hard towards the high levels. ArenaNet can’t seem to find a happy medium (IE a daily using all 4 tiers).

and should it not be balanced for higher tiers? you need a reason to do higher, lower levels should just be tutorials.

I’m not denying that higher levels should be encouraged. The trick is you need enough players doing the lower levels so that players new to Fractals can get up to said higher levels.

Underwater Dragon Speculation Thread

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vagrant.7206

Vagrant.7206

I’ve yet to see any players really enjoy underwater combat. I doubt ANet would ever touch the DSD for this reason.

Why? On top of all the skills being literally untouched for years (and thus unbalanced in favor of specific classes), you also have an issue with depth perception. Gauging distance underwater is extremely difficult, and AoE skills are fundamentally flawed underwater. Forget ground targeting, as there is no ground. The game’s controls are CLUNKY for underwater combat. Other video games work around this problem because they are designed as first-person experiences, and thus underwater is virtually no different than on land.

That’s a lot for ANet to gamble an expac on. They’re better served by having the DSD defeated off-screen or not even mentioned.

TL ; DR : When was the last time you enjoyed fighting the giant jellyfish in fractals?

How often is the air immobilize problem a problem? Every time? I’m only asking because I’ve never personally come across it.

It’s not common, but when it does happen, you better pray that the immobilize doesn’t last long. If it does, you are basically dead without any kind of fight. The only skill I’ve ever been able to activate while airlocked was the smoke screen from my flamethrower. The rest are simply automatic trait skills.

For me, it’s most noticeably happened on the maps with more verticality or obstacles in the way — spirit watch and battle of khylo. Sometimes terrain glitches play into it, as I’ve seen in Skyhammer.

As to the second point by the OP — I do kinda miss launching my character out of the water with rocket boots. They removed the fun part of launches/pulls and now it’s just annoying physics glitches. It’s also not uncommon to see characters in Thaumanova Reactor launched to their deaths by a physics glitch.

I seem to remember there was a bug with some of the adventures during the beta where they wouldn’t give the reward chest when you finished it, then it would randomly pop up later.

Some people found if they switched to a non-beta character before that happened they’d still get the chest and it sometimes contained these items. It shouldn’t have happened, but that’s true of all bugs.

I think that’s true in my case. If I recall correctly, I did an adventure on a Beta char, and switched chars right after (I wasn’t aware of the bug). The chest popped on my normal character, and so I’ve had it since.

Beta Weekend Scrapper Feedback Thread

in Engineer

Vagrant.7206

Gyros are pretty weak. They’re like moving turrets, but worse. The function gyro is the best one, and it’s still got questionable value. They have no health, their damage is low (even in combo fields), and they rarely do what a kit can. Stealth gyro is awful as it runs off to stealth allies in combat and leaves me unstealthed. It can’t keep up when I encounter any kind of terrain that isn’t smooth. It really shouldn’t be an elite. I think what others were saying about gyros acting as passives (except for the attacking gyros) makes a lot of sense.

The hammer is fun though. Switching kits with hammer is wonky though, throws you out of the in-the-moment of the hammer. The 3 skill feels a little too inaccurate/clunky. That said, hammer feels well-fleshed out.

I feel like, that as an elite specialization, scrapper should have some kind of effect on the kits, as those are one of the engineer’s main draws. Instead of gyros, have improved effects on the kits.

Likely candidates in future expansions (not HoT):

  • Tengu, considering their capital city literally borders Lion’s Arch (and this is made obvious by the presence of several guards), and they have a long history in the Guild Wars franchise. It would be a disservice to not make them a playable race.
  • Largos, given the possibility of a Deep Sea Dragon expansion. The brief mentions of their politics suggests ANet wants to explore them further.
  • Forgotten, just because I like them and we haven’t heard mention of them in a long while. There’s never been any indication they’ve been destroyed, and since they were stewards for the human gods, it is likely they are still around. Given that Kormir has used the stewardship of the Forgotten, it would not be surprising if she gave them a new place in Tyria as thanks for their help.
  • Kodan, although they are relatively few in number. They have a large enough presence and similarity to the Norn that they might play a larger role.

The rest are all too minor or too hostile to current races to be a playable race.

  • Skritt are too minor (and stupid individually, the story explains that their intelligence increases only amongst more skritt).
  • Hylek are relatively territory-bound as a race (only ever appear near swamps), and a majority are hostile.
  • Ettins are far too stupid and lack magic.
  • Ogres are largely territorial and limited in size/scope.
  • Quaggans are too peaceful and minor.
  • Centaurs are an antagonizing race for humans. Even a friendly tribe cannot make up for the vast majority of centaurs.
  • Jotun fell from power long ago, and lost their magic. They are unlikely to be playable.
  • Imps are usually summoned, meaning their presence is more similar to elementals.
  • Krait and harpies are too hostile to the existing races to be friendly.
  • Margonites have been supposedly defeated with Kormir completely taking over Abaddon’s realm and eliminating opposition.
  • Dredge are generally too hostile to the rest of the races, because of their enslavement by the Iron Summit Dwarves long ago. Some are starting to come around, but it’s not significant enough numbers.
  • Twisted are mechanical creatures with no intelligence.
  • Mursaat bear mentioning, but they have been too hostile to the Shining Blade historically.
  • Naga/Krait are flat-out too hostile to all the peaceful races. They enslave quaggans and anybody close enough to their territory (including humans, sylvari, and more).
  • Giants used to rule the world in the previous cycle — Jotun and Norn were some of the giants. The Jotun fell from power and magic use, and the Norn managed to survive supposedly thanks to their religion.

“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” - Hanlon’s Razor

As most of you who read the forums know, ANet botched the pre-purchase information by providing veteran players with nothing for pre-purchasing (except a meaningless title), while new players got the core game as a bonus.

ArenaNet has now attempted to correct the problem by providing an additional character slot if you pre-purchase.

Is there really somebody at ANet’s executive level that is this incompetent at understanding how this works, or are they genuinely malicious?

Pre-purchasing is giving ArenaNet your money on a promise. Unlike pre-ordering, where one puts a small amount of money as a down payment (which can be refunded) for the full-game at release (in order to reserve a place in line), pre-purchasing is paying the full price without knowledge of the quality of the product.

As it stands, the amount of information on Heart of Thorns is disturbingly sparse for ArenaNet to ask $50 of us. We don’t even have a release date. Yet, with this recent attempt to placate the fanbase, ArenaNet execs have blurred the line from incompetence to maliciousness.

You see, the fine print of this announcement clearly states you only get the additional character slot if you pre-purchase. If you buy on the day of release or later, you lose that potential benefit, because ArenaNet wanted that money earlier.

As a gamer, I’ve been burned by pre-purchases in the past. I no longer trust pre-purchases, and reviews that are independent and thorough rarely come about before a game is released. This new “clarification” puts me in a bind. Do I risk being burned again in order to get something that should be seen as standard like it would be in any other MMO, or do I hold to my convictions and experiences and lose the benefit for peace of mind?

ArenaNet, the additional character slot should be available to anybody who is a veteran, regardless of pre-purchase or not. It is demeaning to gamers to strong-arm us like this. Please prove to me that you just didn’t think it through, or prove to me that this is malice.

many people asked for the character slot. i don’t that that is the minimum. the minimum would have been to do nothing.

Again, read the fine print. You only get the character slot if you pre-purchase.

For those of us that disagree with pre-purchasing as a practice (both ethically and practically), we still get nothing. For those who want a boxed copy, they also get nothing as boxed copies will not be available until after HoT is released.

AKA: They did the bare minimum, just to strongarm us into pre-purchase.

Pre-Purchase Community Address

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Vagrant.7206

This community can never be pleased.

It is standard MMO practice for any expansion that adds new character classes to also include at least one additional character slot by default. See: WoW, Guild Wars 1, etc.

The problem with this “clarification” is that you ONLY get this benefit if you pre-purchase.

In other words, you are expected to pre-purchase for a “bonus” that is seen as normal in almost every other comparable game out there. It’s like buying a plane ticket at the gate, and finding out the seat is not included, since you didn’t order your ticket well in advance.

Pre-purchasing as a practice is inherently anti-consumer. We are literally paying for a promise. We have no guarantee as to the quality of the product, or if we’ll even get the product (if ArenaNet goes under before release, for example). This move strongarms people into pre-purchasing if they want that slot

Yes well while at the same time they are making new players jump through one less, incredibly easy hoop, they are giving less value to their existing customers and I’d say given the reactions, insulting them and rousing quite a bit of contempt.

But as I said before, they are increasing value for new players, not lowering value for old players.

Have you ever been at a restaurant where somebody gets an extra treat because it’s their birthday? Do you begrudge the person or the restaurant because that person gets an extra bonus? Or do you celebrate that person’s birthday with them?

What really amuses me is the people standing up for ANet when it is a majority that is angry and not a minority, in the end it doesn’t really matter if people are mad because ANet is not drowning puppies, whatever the reason they are angry, if it is a majority and you are running a business (which they are obviously trying to do) you listen to said majority, or you lose your customers, your most loyal ones.

The most angry people are almost always the most vocal. There’s a reason why when you look at politics, the extremists seem to be louder than the moderates. Don’t assume you speak for the majority because your side happens to be the loudest.

And don’t assume I am defending ANet either. I’m saying save your money until you know the product is good or bad, then make your decision. Don’t get up in arms when you have incomplete information.

And that will happen here, I’m sure you and everyone else defending ANet don’t really care even though it will affect your gameplay if the population drops off, but ANet at some point will care, either to people speaking out or to people leaving.

You are mis-perceiving ANet’s attempts to add new players and make them feel welcome as a personal attack against you. Try to see this issue from ANet’s perspective — they always want more players, and there are certain ways of doing this. The issue is that they don’t seem to have everything thought out yet, and so most of the information is incomplete.

Either way stop complaining about people complaining, as unseemly as it is? This is how things change and are set right all over the world.

I’m not asking people to stop complaining. I’m asking them to have some perspective.

The fact you think this is all about ‘price’ pretty much suggests you didn’t read anything just skimmed over the topic titles and decided to make a topic.

Well done.

Then why don’t you explain what this is REALLY about?

Why don’t you go take the time and read before creating a new topic? Seems more of a constructive thing to do than me wasting my personal time in order to bring you up to speed? Pick any of the topic and actually read the points being made, pretty sure you don’t need me to hold your hand for that?

The points being made most often pertain to the perceived value of the good being sold. Sure, there are complaints about longstanding issues, but the vast majority of complaints are about perceived value of the game (expectations vs. reality). I am attempting to address this by pointing out that perceived value =/= real value, and the only way to know real value is to wait until HoT launches and the reviews come in.

the fact that upgrading your account literally gives you less than starting a new HoT-upgraded account, despite costing the same.

The official explanation is to lower barrier of entry into the game. This is a legitimate point to be made — the more expansions that are tacked onto a game, the less likely a game is to attract new players as the price rises. An obvious example is Steam’s Rail Simulator, which, when all the DLC is added up, comes to a value of more than $2000.

http://kotaku.com/to-buy-all-of-this-games-dlc-youll-need-over-2-000-1412153921
http://store.steampowered.com/app/24010/

An elevated price tag (along with the extra hoops of installation and patching and then repeating for the expansion) reduces the amount of new players coming into Guild Wars. While your perceived value is lowered because you aren’t receiving a new account, the value of HoT has not actually changed. The value of the expansion has merely increased for new players, not decreased for you.

the fact that the HoT FAQ – and frequent sales – have been causing people to buy the base game for the past few months, causing players to think they would have to buy the base game separately, and then offering the base game free – meaning that many of those who bought the game since HoT was released have been mislead.

This is a legitimate concern. I do agree with your point here. This is why I suggest to people to not do anything until they have more concrete information, which ANet hasn’t been very forthcoming about.

the fact that Anet has been altering these FAQs in order to cover this up.

Hanlon’s Razor applies here:

“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”

I suspect that ArenaNet is making things up as they go along, instead of pre-planning, and the result is several botches. They should get their act together, or they may face actual legal challenges.

the fact that they claim the standard addition is HoT with a free copy of GW2, not a bundle, but they give you one code which works as a bundle, rather than one code for HoT and one “free” code for GW2.

Again, this is about lowering barrier to entry to new players, making new players jump through fewer hoops. Wait for more information about the possibility of an “upgrade.”

The fact you think this is all about ‘price’ pretty much suggests you didn’t read anything just skimmed over the topic titles and decided to make a topic.

Well done.

Then why don’t you explain what this is REALLY about?

HoT Price Feedback + Base game included [merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Vagrant.7206

Vagrant.7206

Just browsing over this forum, everybody is talking about HoT costing $50 to pre-order.

Arguments against the price are:

  • The preorder includes the base game, which is at least a $10 value, yet veterans aren’t given a discount for already owning the base game.
  • The preorder does not include character expansion slots (at least none mentioned)
  • This is an “expansion” which only seems to add 3 maps and a few features.

Arguments for the price are:

  • We don’t pay a subscription fee, so ANet needs to recoup money it would have had with a subscription. Additionally, ANet has added new content to the game for free (Living Stories 1 and 2).
  • We have no idea how complex/intricate the new maps and features are, as our knowledge regarding the material is limited.

Here’s why it doesn’t matter what the price is:

  • Pre-order sales are a bad business practice to support. Any person who has played games for long enough should know better at this point. Since this is a game that is digitally delivered, there aren’t limited numbers of copies. Don’t support pre-ordering, as it is an inherently anti-consumer practice.
  • Veterans and newcomers alike should wait for the reviews to HoT like they would for any new game. Since the current pricing suggests it is a new game, treat it like one. Reviews from multiple sources provide valuable insight to the true value of the game. We don’t have the knowledge necessary to make an informed opinion yet, so don’t leap before you look.
  • Demand more information before you cast your opinion. ANet has been incredibly tight-lipped about a lot of the practicality of release of HoT. We don’t know if extra character slots are included, what bonuses are available to veteran players, or what the practical effects of any of the new content (especially the revenant) will have on the overall gameplay. Some of these questions can be answered by ANet (but they choose not to or don’t know yet), and others cannot be answered until HoT launches. Wait to buy the game.
  • Ultimately, if the price bothers you, wait for a sale. Some features of HoT are being added to the base game without actually having HoT. It also seems likely that at some future point ANet will include an “upgrade” package.

TL ; DR : Preorder price doesn’t matter because you shouldn’t preorder.

The Strangest Accusation of Cheating

in PvP

Posted by: Vagrant.7206

Vagrant.7206

Preface: I have a cheap motherboard, which sometimes causes the internet on my computer to cut out randomly for a short period before long periods of normality. It’s infinitely frustrating, because it usually happens at the worst possible moments.

I believe, that as a result of my motherboard cutting out during a match today, I lost a match I may have possibly won, or come close to winning. I let my team know that I was struggling with the issue during the match, and was transparent about it.

The strange thing that happened, however, was when I finished the match, I was accused of helping the other team somehow. That I had a habit of assisting them in their wins and that I was in on it, ignoring that I never knew the guys, or was in their guild, or any sign that I knew them, they accused me of working with them.

On top of that, part of their cited “evidence” was that I called out times when buffs would arrive (11:30, 8:30, 5:30) but didn’t go to the buffs all the times I called it (even though I did once, and the other time I was in combat). I’m not sure how that even counts as evidence.

This is all ignoring the fact that one can’t intentionally get a setup like that when nobody on the other team is in a premade and I can’t force getting into the same match as them.

Regardless, the person didn’t want to listen and claimed that “everybody” reported me, even though there is also no report for that sort of thing, nor any way to prove it.

What are some absurd accusations you’ve gotten?

WvW no longer required for world completion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vagrant.7206

Vagrant.7206

The problem with WvW being part of map completion is multifold:

1) It’s in the Mists. This is established lore. Thus, it is not Tyria and should not count to Tyrian map completion, in the same way that Heart of the Mists and sPvP maps do not count. It’s a little mind-boggling why ANet considered it part of Tyria in the first place.

2) For some reason until this point, WvW was required map completion, but dungeons have never been. This is counterintuitive.

3) Getting WvW map completion for people who do not enjoy playing WvW is not a challenge, but a time sink — wait a week for the rotation to change, and pray that certain points are open when the rotation occurs. If not, wait another week. Not every player enjoys WvW, and should not be expected to. My fiancee and I both despise WvW, so we have both employed the “Wait a week” strategy.

4) Prior to the current setup, when server changes were free and instantaneous, you could complete WvW map completion in a very short time period (maybe an hour) by swapping rapidly between servers. This benefited older players and punished new players who can’t take advantage of rapid server changes.

5) For everybody getting kitten about this reducing the amount of players entering WvW — this has never hurt sPvP. Both have been around long enough that curious people will investigate, as they are talked about frequently in guilds and map chat.

Cautiously optimistic, considering previous “improvements” to Fractals have ended in poor results.

3. Fractal Weapon Boxes are now a very rare drop from completing Fractal Level 40 – 50.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Fractal_Gear_Box

Anet messed up big time….shoulda made it 41+

I might be behind the times because i wasnt around when fractured came out, but according to wiki and ppl who have i guess datamined this exitsts, and it should allow people to pick skins but hasn’t been implemented yet. Maybe there is hope yet altho it will still be rng, but less painful rng

When Fractured! came out they announced these boxes as one of the amazing new features. Then a few days/weeks later when no one had received one, they were like “JK GUYZ THEY ONLY DROP FROM 51 PLUS WHICH YOU CAN’T ACCESS YET LELELELELEL”

Talk about punishing players for no particular reason. This is the only dungeon with a gear grind and we still get treated in this way.

PuG Fotm 50s

I thought hammer guard was useful in guards. Is it just because of all the light fields? I was just beginning to do FotM with guard, and uh, if I shouldn’t be running hammer, it would always help to know : )

It’s mostly the light fields yeah. It’s less DPS and never really needed. If someone’s gonna down, they’re gonna down. Protection or not.

But I will say, I’d way way rather have a hammer guard than a staff guard obviously xD

I’m not sure what you expect out of your pug. Maybe your expectation is a bit too high for pug, just like the OP.

It’s not like I even see elementalist or engineer that much in fotm50. So I’m quite surprised people have a problem with hammer guardian in a fotm50 pug.

And I dont’ really see other class bother with fire field/blast that much.

That being said, I cant’ remember the last time an elemantalist actually blasted might during a fight with boomalang. Usually they just stay max distance and dont’ really balst during fight.

The only engineer I ever see on 50 is me

Same for me as well.

I don’t really mind that fractal skins are very rare “RNG” drops, but what I do mind is that even the skin you get is completely random.

The hardest part about that is that I’ve heard horror stories of people receiving the same skin 5 or more times.
