So...New Patch....

It’s likely not a single team that did all this. The wallet was likely a background team, as with the effect level of detail setting. The PvP and WvW stuff was from their respective teams, as was likely the perm finisher setup. These updates were likely finished, so they bundled them in with this release.

The LW team itself probably did the pavilion, the rewards, the Queen’s Gauntlet (with unique bosses and gambit conditions), etc. Basically, the content itself.

Just my opinion though, could be wrong.

I can't believe there is another Festival

You guys do realize this is the anniversary festival right? like 1 year of GW2? Did you really expect something different?

Heres the problem with that thought… This content it coming out on August 6th. Guild wars 2 was released August 28th. So it has nothing to do with the release of guild wars 2. Im sure the following content update will be another festival for that landmark. Im sure that festival will also we followed up with the back to school festival for all the minors…. Mini Notebooks I can’t wait….

This is likely a month long again, like Dragon Bash and Bazaar of the Four Winds, so it would have to be here and not on the 28th.

There may be another release that adds/prepares for the actual date, but it’s pretty obvious this is the backdrop for the GW2 anniversary.

It feels more like an in-game excuse for the GW2 anniversary than another festival.

I doubt they’re going to have every release be the third act of a Michael Bay movie.

edit: GO GO GADGET DATA MINING!
SPOILERS:
109813_0777 Special Access Pass! 109813_0825 Gain entry to the Royal Terrace in Divinity's Reach. * Asura Gates to All Cities * Crafting Stations * Bank and Guild Bank Access * Mystic Forge * Merchants * And more! All within easy reach, for those who enjoy the ultimate convenience.

I have to ask; what’s the point of adding all of those? Are they trying to turn DR into the LA? Everything in that spoiler seems like an unnecessary addition to me, but maybe I’m missing something.

I’ve been wondering about that as well. Doesn’t DR already have all that stuff? Are they moving them all to once point, is it not really part of DR (thus needing them), what is it for ?

From my understanding it’s everything on that list at one single location, which doesn’t exist right now. Some places are close, but not all items.

Living World - The Story So Far...

Personal preference is personal preference, honestly. I actually stopped playing several times in GW1 because large parts of that story were very boring to me, which prevented it from feeling as epic as everyone seems to say it is. I stop playing GW2 more due to burnout than I ever do from being bored with the story, so it’s pretty much the opposite for me.

Heralds, mails, talks with NPCs with the icon on above their heads, that’s how you find out what to do and most of the story/backdrop. Very little has actually been where you need to go outside the game to find out what to do (except perhaps how to accomplish certain achievements, which is not so much story).

If you came to this thread looking for an exciting narrative of the story, you’re out of luck. My point with the write-up is to be informative, to show what all happened and where that info came from in-game (or the few instances outside of it).

If you think these Living Story achievements actually requires 2 full weeks of nonstop playing, you obviously have not play enough of other mmos where constant, never-ending, luck-based grinding was the whole game.

Please do not count something as hard or will take forever until you have tried them out yourself.

It takes me two weeks…

…of playing a couple times per week, 1-1.5 hours at a time (all I can spare with life and job). I just got Lessons from the Sky, for example, and tomorrow I hope to finish the Kite and do one of the metas.

If someone had several hours at a stretch or could play every day, two weeks is plenty of time though. Easy to get it with more time available.

I think we need more difficulty-scaling-type content (like Fractals do) for those who have plenty of time, specifically where you can run it over and over again getting more and more difficult, and then keep adding more of those (maybe one every 2 months or so) to keep those with more time with something to do for them. I initially figured that’s where Ascended gear was going, where it’d be the gear those who wanted to do that content would focus on because it had stats (like agony resistance) that only mattered in there whereas those who didn’t could stay with exotic and not care.

What i don’t understand…is how do they have the story line plotted out if the election hasn’t finished yet?? I call shinnanigans, the election is rigged.

The results of the election will likely not matter until November, maybe slightly earlier. They’ll just follow other plot points until then.

Note that August will be the anniversary stuff and hopefully focusing on more Kryta content, September is still up in the air (some are speculating SAB returning, but perhaps another racial focus…Asuran could combine the two), October is Mad King month (possibly something else also, but Halloween is usually a big deal), November will be the results of the election (possibly other things, but we’re most likely getting the fractals then, maybe another racial focus?), and December is probably going to be Wintersday (also a big deal).

They can easily avoid furthering the story for Kiel/Gnashblade until November, they’ve got other characters and plot threads to work with.

Try in the Dead End instance where you first met Marjory.

I have a Journal and I have never met Marjory. I have never ran her instance. My journal doesn’t work either.

I’m not sure how that’s possible for you to have it and not have met her, maybe a bug?

AFAIK, you have to meet Marjory in Hard Boiled before you can meet her again in Every Piece Matters, and then again in No More Secrets. You get the journal after completing that one.

It could just be a glitch, or it could be that she is back in the next Living Story and they are updating her Journal to have menus and able to play multiple cut scenes?

That’s a possibility. The next piece is taking place in DR, so she could easily make an appearance.

sure there has been plot progression, but that doesn’t make it a good story. That’s what all the complaints are about. Also the fact its poorly deliver and boring doesn’t help.

that being said there are some little gems in the story which give me a spark of hope, unfortunately they extinguish it the next patch with more dribble.

Here’s the thing -

Ask around, and you’ll probably find any game you could hold up as an example of a “good story” would have detractors who would disagree. Nitpicks, technical details, or plot holes which make no sense due to various reasons . . .

We haven’t seen a game yet which really and truly tells an excellent story and at the same time is an excellent game. We’ve had games which had a good story but barely a game (Xenosaga, and there were many other issues which dragged it down), we’ve had games which were great games but really blew it on the story (Portal).

First and foremost, the question always does have to be: is the game fun to play? If the answer’s no, then you need to step back and figure out how to make it fun. If you want to tell your awesome story, write it but not as a game. Or at least do the game first, THEN figure out how to get a story in there.

But you know what the Living Story reminds me more of as it unfolds? Someone’s tabletop RPG world where a couple people who know the creator run game sessions each with their own story arc, which may or may not affect other sessions/groups.

It also reminds me of television shows with large story arcs where each episode has an immediate storyline to resolve, but also contributes to the overall arc in some way. They’re always slow at the beginning.

I’mrellying in what i’ve read on this page:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/july-23-2013/
which IS official info.
wiki is made by players.
and…
I checked once again and there are no mention to Aspect arena just southsun survival.
but I don’t agree with copy-paste argument – evon is hosting this minigames and Ellen is scheduling them
I think itis the matter of zephyrites leaves – Aspect Arena is based on their crystals so after their leaving Kiel would have minimall acces to it – and southsun is were and will be still there

I talked to the candidates in game – no one are talking about this – kiel only sends You to Arena and evon on survival.
I also read Patch notes..
and hey there are also no info that choicing will have matter to the minigames….

In-game, the candidates say this if you choose the option in their dialogue that doesn’t send you to their activity:

Gnashblade: …And lastly, I’ll sponsor a weekly rotation of Southsun Survival, Sanctum Sprint, Keg Brawl, and Crab Toss games to keep things exciting.

Kiel: …Finally, I’ll establish a weekly rotation of Southsun Survival, Sanctum Sprint, Keg Brawl, and Crab Toss.

And what is put on the wiki is the information that we get from the official sources and dev quotes. Just because it’s player made doesn’t mean it isn’t accurate. Popular info has a lot more eyes on it to catch mistakes.

Cliff notes version of the living story?

in Living World

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

Funny enough I’ve been reading a few books recently where the plot does in fact jump around from one area/arc to another with only small connections to each other, before coming together more cohesively. The jumping around is used a lot in the early parts of tons of fiction books to establish characters, areas, and plot points for later. One of the much higher-quality takes on this is the Song of Ice and Fire series (eg Game of Thrones), which I only bring up because it’s a well known story from a skilled author that does in fact jump around while presenting its plot (even to another continent).

Maybe the disjointed feeling people mention (I’ve never experienced it because I read a lot of books that do it early on in the plot) comes from those players having an expectation that everything from one arc must flow into the next arc like a simplistic quest chain. In other games, all the plot points would be experienced without even thinking about it because players would have a quest line that would lead them around and show them each NPC’s lines and narrative text, each relevant plot point only appearing to them when it was time to show them. No exploring needed or encouraged, no actually finding a journal describing a plot point, you have the story told at you.

Of course, not even that method is fool-proof, since I’ve seen countless times on other games’ forums where players reach the end of the arc through hundreds of quests, including times where a quest line was specifically marked “Hallmark” which always refers to the main plot even from launch, and then wonder where all the plot was when they’ve ignored it the entire time, even unintentionally. “You can lead a horse to water”, perhaps?

I do think ArenaNet can definitely improve on providing more story and better ways to present it, but perhaps the problem also lies in that players expect the story to be told to them (or at them, if you prefer), instead of how ArenaNet is presenting it. No method is going to present the information best to everyone, as players will always have the ability to skip and ignore the story.

I just think perhaps players are acting like we’re on book 4 or 5 of the story arc when really we’re more on chapter 4 or 5, and the beginnings and introductions are still taking place so we’re still moving around. It’s just happening 2-4 weeks at a time, so many are losing perspective.

Southsun survival bigger, permanent content

in Cutthroat Politics

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

It would be amazing if you could make Southsun Survival better by:
-Adding it as a permanent feature in GW2 (as in some of the news recently you did say there will be more permanent content in the future).

Southsun Survival is one of the minigames specifically mentioned to become a permanent addition to the game after this election. Both Kiel and Gnashblade promise to put in a rotating schedule of activities, and this is one of them alongside Sanctum Sprint, Crab Toss, and Keg Brawl.

So yes, it will be permanent as far as we know, although we don’t know if it will be available all the time and just rotating emphasis with the others or if it’ll actually go away and come back when it’s turn is up.

The things required to make the Thaumanova reactor tick -are- already in the game and we haven’t been given any information to believe the reactor fractal will involve the creation of new assets (in both cases I am omitting a potential fractal boss specific to them as they would obviously be new in either case).

To be fair, though, we haven’t been given much information at all regarding the specific content of the fractals from the devs. All we really know is that the Fall of Abaddon fractal is the event that took place before GW1, that the Thaumanova Reactor is the explosion event that took place just prior to the start of GW2, and that these two fractals were the best two of the options the Living World team came up with when brainstorming possible fractals to make.

Everything else is based on other information, from lore or what other NPCs are saying in-game, and from player’s fantasies and suppositions. Some may end up being accurate, but nothing else is confirmed as far as the specific content of the fractals (not the event) AFAIK.

Where is the story going?

in Living World

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

Go to the second link in my post above. I put links to the wiki where each bit of information came from as I could, where it shows the dialogue and info. The vast majority of it is told in-game through character interactions, NPC dialogue, object text, missions, events, and mail, with only a few bits of background info coming from the blogs.

I haven’t seen an issue with the story not being in-game. The main issue I’ve seen is that ArenaNet isn’t constantly blasting the story at players faces through quest text and long, non-interactive cutscenes, so it requires players to speak and interact with living story content in-game to get it all (what I call “open world lore”). I don’t believe players have been taught enough to do this, so players are missing a lot of info.

The achievements will skew results

in Cutthroat Politics

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

It’s only unbalanced/skewed if you assume each player gets a single vote, or perhaps only a set number of votes. That’s not the case here. Players vote multiple times based on how many Support Tokens they farm and how much they play during this time, and cast these votes based on what they want from the election (the rewards from whichever result are specifically listed). If some players want the achievements for the other party, another “reward”, then obviously they’ll put some votes in for that party in order to get those achievements.

However, in the long run, these extra votes can be considered minor, and can generally be assumed to be performed on both sides fairly equally since we can’t make the argument that achievement hunters would largely favor one candidate or the other. Considering that the achievements themselves are mirrored, they essentially cancel each other out.

Living 'world/story', the Good and the Bad

Vahkris.6847

Check this article, it has a quote from Mike Zadorojny.

“The game had been out for a couple months so we said we want to look at the game at a more macro level to have a story that’s changing, and adding more permanent content to player interaction and things that are happening. We started this experiment at the beginning of the year with the Flaming Frost team… It gradually got bigger, and now we have four full teams actually working on this. They get up to four months at a time to build one whole month’s worth of content that’s constantly changing.”

There’s another article here

That strategy involves four teams, each given four months to produce two updates that will deploy across their given month.

Each team does two updates in their month, and has 3-4 months to work on the next update after the other three teams do theirs.

All of this is after their change to 2 week updates, because they didn’t announce 4 teams prior to that. Before the announcement, we only knew they had a main team and a secondary team.

And yes, theoretically they could include random changes all over the world in response to each event. I think they’re still in the ramp-up process though (F*F was done by a single team, IIRC, so doing the math I don’t think every team has yet to present their releases), so perhaps that’ll happen more. This is still pretty new to MMOs, so it’s not surprising that they’re focusing more on the actual content than ancillary details.

Given the system, it doesn’t seem like the Support Tokens would be easily tracked, but completion of the achievements would…

You put the token into a virtual box that says Kiel or one that says Gnashblade. I’m failing to see how that would be hard to track.

Depends on how it’s set up, baka. They’d need to track how many times a specific action is performed, when such an act is not tracked in anywhere else in the game. Can be done, or they could be using a pre-existing method to do it…

Given how ArenaNet has a tendency to cut corners when they don’t need to be precise, which do you think?

‘Sides, unlike reality, there’s no box to retrieve tokens from. It’s just an NPC dialogue, and everywhere else in the game, those things reset in no more than 10 minutes.

Trust me, pretty much every action is logged already. Checking how many times people have interacted (successfully) with each of the boxes is trivial. It’s no more difficult than checking how many people have completed different achievements.
And even if it weren’t logged already, it would be no more difficult than adding a trigger when you successfully interact with it that says something like this:
add_vote_ellen(multiplier)
where the multiplier is 1 by default, and 2 if you have the buff to double it. It’s not a lot of work.

Besides, they’d have to track the votes, considering that’s the stated metric by which a winner is decided, not how many of the achievements are completed. So the whole argument is moot.

Besides, incrementing a variable and logging an action are probably two of the first things programmers learn how to do, outside of Print “Hello World”. It’s used everywhere in GW2. Not sure why the question of whether they can track votes even comes up.

Here’s some more info:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Living_World_Summary

If you want a more detailed storyline of the events with references, I also wrote up one here on the forums: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/lwd/Living-World-The-Story-So-Far/first

It’s the little bits of info that really matter here. In F&F, the Flame Legion and dredge were actually convinced to join up by a so-far unknown person, using their potential combined power as incentive. That person has yet to be revealed, as well as their goals. Canach escaped during Lost Shores during the confusion at the end. We don’t see it and it’s not detailed how…I don’t think it matters, they only really had him under a couple guards. Subdirector Noll, also involved, sent some assassins after him but failed. The Aetherblades did arrive out of nowhere, but there has been a couple news posts detailing their (behind the scenes) origin as well as an excerpt from a report by Kiel. Mai revealed that someone named Scarlet was directing her (and the Aetherblades), but like the person behind the Molten Alliance we don’t know who it is and it could very well be the same person.

Kinda spoilers below

The Zephyrites have been revealed to be the descendants of an organization called the Brotherhood of the Dragon, who safeguarded Glint’s secrets (Gling was a crystalline dragon in GW1, and for GW2 we learned she was one of the Elder Dragon’s champions before the Forgotten managed to free her). It used to be a group of dwarves back in GW1, but the mantle got passed to humans when it was determined that the time of the dwarves was ending. They later renamed themselves the Zephyrites and at some point they discovered the Aspects, basically the power of sun, wind, and lightning. They recovered Glint’s corpse and built a flying sanctuary, known as the Zephyr Sanctum. They occasionally trade with land-dwellers to restock supplies they cannot make on the sanctum, and right now they’re trading in the Bazaar of the Four Winds.

Where is the story going?

in Living World

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

Not to sound rude, but almost nothing of your plot summarise is actually correct. Of course that by itself might just imply that the story is too stretched for the masses to follow.

And that is the main problem. We need something to tie it all into a nice pretty bow as it unfolds. Some sort of summary in game. Something perhaps next to the Personal story in the hero tab. Something that we can read or watch or play (likely read as it is easiest.). So that it brings the dis-jointed parts together so we can see the big hole.

I heard ArenaNet is aware of this problem. I sure hope a solution is coming this year.

As for the current living story I see it tieing dragon bash,Atherblades to this but I don’t see how Rox or Braham(he is still off chasing his girlfriend) comes into play.

I was hoping that the wiki at least could have this as this is how I got caught up on GW1 lore….. However the wiki is so disjointed on the matter too. I don’t even think the editors of the wiki can see most of how they tie together.

Oh we can. You’re talking about a group of people who pay a lot more attention to the little details than most.

If you want a more detailed storyline of the events with references, I also wrote up one here on the forums: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/lwd/Living-World-The-Story-So-Far/first

(There hasn’t been a decision that I know of yet on whether we want to have the summary page with the level of detail it has or if we should go higher detail on the same level that I wrote, so that’s why they’re separate right now)

They’re connected, even if only “event A creates situation that leads into event B”

Overlapping updates

in Living World

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

We don’t know (yet) whether all releases are going to be set up like this, but it seems pretty logical that they would be considering the structure. I created a thread here for those who want a central place to locate the deadlines, though.

We know there are 4 Living World teams. Each team is responsible for a full month’s content. There are releases every 2 weeks, which means each team will be responsible for 2 releases. One of the reasons they went to a release every two weeks was because player activity dropped off after about 2 weeks once a release had been launched.

It seems likely what they’ve done is create monthly releases in a two-act structure. Act I is released near the beginning of the month and provides the setup and first part of the content for that story arc, whereas Act II is released two weeks later and adds the remaining content, story, and rewards.

It’s possible that a team could have two relatively unrelated releases…but considering they’re doing this to also tell a story, I think having that “Act I” to set up the scenario and then “Act II” have the meaty content (while Act I content and achievements persist like it has for every month so far after F&F) is a very likely template for future releases.

What the Fractal?

Just to keep in perspective, we have zero information about what actual gameplay will be in these fractals…just the setting.

It’s entirely possible to have a cool setting with poorly received gameplay, and vice versa.

How is Anet going to play off this?

I think they do have both results already created, so they’ll just use whichever is elected. The temporary benefit and the rotating mini-games do not require the NPCs to actually be present, so they have time to create content using the results.

Not to mention that there could always be content involving an NPC like Kiel that can be developed and put in regardless of whether she’s on the council or not (just different voice/text/model put in). For example, I don’t know whether Magnus would strip the airship away from her if she lost, so that may be used in a later storyline anyway.

Thanks to Vahkris for doing this.

Not to diminish Vahkris’ efforts though, but…

I just think he/she shouldn’t have had to. Someone at Anet must know when specific pieces of content are going away. They can’t just be adding content by the seat of their pants every 2 weeks and then ending it randomly. Surely there is a timeline somewhere.

Strongly agree.

Echo of the above. Thanks Vahkris, and hope ANet rewards you for picking up their slack!

As I posted before when I look for GW2 related info I look at the GW2 forums and/or wiki first. Dulfy second. Reddit? NEVER. It is infuriating that that’s where the ANet employees decide to post first.

In all fairness, it was Kuraine, who is actually a music and sound dev, not a CM or anything like that, so it may not have been intended to be “the official response”. He may not actually have known that no one’s stated the deadlines and just saw a chance to help out.

The LS achievements should happen naturally

Vahkris.6847

So achievements aren’t something you should have to work hard enough to even consider using a guide for?

I mean, you get enough of them as it is just by playing the Living World story, but those hardly feel like they’re any sort of achievement except a comprehension check. It’s probably good that there are achievements that take enough effort that players might need direction to where some of them are.

The fractal will (likely) not be made for the losing option, but that doesn’t mean they can’t provide any information through some other means about the events. they haven’t developed it, but obviously they’ve done from prep work to come to a decision to use these two, so they probably have what happened written down somewhere. We’ll likely see it, but probably not through a fractal.

Honestly, I’m surprised they don’t keep a rolling selection of options for future player choices. Like, the losing option here gets rolled into the next choice between fractals or something. It doesn’t cancel the meaning behind this vote, but it does allow them to keep it a possibility for future content.

They’re of Canthan and Elonian descent, according to the Priory’s records.

It is confirmed that their origins is the Brotherhood of the Dragon.

LOR is based on fallible records of the Durmand Priory, is stated to be a belief, and says most not all.

“Brotherhood of the Dragon” is an organization, not a race. It doesn’t mean anything regarding where the members themselves came from.

Remove Living Story after 4 weeks, not 2

in Living World

Vahkris.6847

BotFW achievements will not be removed tomorrow, so you can continue to earn them. They’ll expire at the end of CP.

Each month has a different team running the show. The way it seems to be going, they do an initial release which has the more long-term achievements in it, and then a mid-month release that seems to have more short-term achievements in it. The mid-month release has yet to actually remove the initial release achievements (unless previously noted).

CP is the mid-month release, so you have two more weeks before both release achievements go away.

Evon…

You track down the aetherblades, slaughter an entire base of them — almost dying in the process. And what does Kiel do? Nothing. Nothing but steal the credit for doing so. Well I say to The Mists with that! Save a kitten; vote Evon.

Except she was the one who tracked down the aetherblades and organized the offensive, and deputized you to help take care of them. That’s how leadership works.

Labyrinthine Cliffs: Who ARE these people

Based on how I understood the introduction text, the Bazaar of the Four Winds is a possibly annual event that seems to happen at random locations, and possibly random times, in order to keep law enforcement from being able to control the trade that occurs there. So I would say it is possible that all of the construction at the Bazaar is most likely very quickly fabricated, and may have been designed by the Zephyrites because they decided to show up this year, which text seems to indicate they do not always do. As for the Zephyrites, there is some text pointing to them being of Canthan or Elonian origin, but this most likely comes from the fact that no one in Tyria (continent) knows how they came to exist so they assume they must not be from here. But from the written text standpoint along with the lore that the Zephyrites themselves feel like revealing they are definitely from either Tyrian or Elonian decent because of their relation to the dragon, Glint. I personally hope that ArenaNet keeps their exact origins a mystical secret and this becomes a little enigma within the game that we never fully understand.

They’re of Canthan and Elonian descent, according to the Priory’s records.

Yup. I’ve updated the OP to reflect the new information. I put everything ending on the 6th except the Council election, since we already knew the end date for that.

As always, please let me know if the information isn’t clear or needs to be worded differently.

Thanks!
