How can the community help with story? (wiki)

Okay, 70 views and nothing. Either people don’t actually care, don’t like my wall of text, or don’t even have an idea what could be done.

Let’s try a different tactic.

Take a look at the following two pages:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Secret_of_Southsun#Secret_of_Southsun
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Last_Stand_at_Southsun#Last_Stand_at_Southsun

Towards the end of LSaS we went back and added little subheaders for the various little bits of story-related stuff that happened during both releases, the idea being that you could look at each of these things, read through the dialogue, and keep up with the story.

In my head, this seemed to be a good way to record the story “progression”, as it were, but still required players to go to the different pages and read the different dialogue, putting some of it together in their head.

Another thing, that may happen soon for Southsun stuff, was what we did for Lost Shores.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Lost_Shores#Prelude
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Lost_Shores/Phase_1
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Lost_Shores/Phase_2
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Lost_Shores/Phase_3

Each of these include the various bits of lore that happened, including links to separate pages for the dialogues involved in Phases 1 and 2 (phase 3 is on the same page since it’s short enough). This laid out the story in a more contextual format, creating more of a narrative.

I’ve heard that Memorials on the Pyre doesn’t scale, unlike the other living story instances and content (Molten Facility, all of Southsun, Braham/Rox’s dungeons).

I was wondering if this was intentional or not?

burn down the dragons - achievement

in Dragon Bash

Vahkris.6847

Burn Down the Dragons is from lighting the effigies that are located out in the zones. You have to dance in front of them to burn them, apparently.

Well, it would be nice if they specify this. The patch notes just say you dance in front of them to get health increase. They say nothing about them being the same ones you burn, or even if you burn them at all.

By the way…the ones for health increase are in explorable areas leading into Lion’s Arch according to the patch notes. So, what is it? World zones…or somewhere in LA? I’m just so confused by this.

I don’t really understand the confusion. There are 26 explorable areas…zones…maps…whatever you want to call them. They’re called Gendarran Fields, Bloodtide Coast, Kessex Hills, Lornar’s Pass, etc. It says the effigies are out in those zones.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see the confusion. Maybe I’m missing something.

Dragon Ball Achievements removed from meta?

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

I thought it was pretty obvious. You needed 10 achievements for the meta. They announced only Case Closed wouldn’t count, in the patch notes. People point out that Dragon Ball achievements aren’t counting. They admit these achievements won’t count, and lower the meta requirement by two so you still don’t have to do everything if you want to get the achievement (which, if you didn’t do the fireworks, Dragon Ball, or Moa Racing, you would need to).

The idea behind not having to complete every achievement to get the meta is that they want you to be able to choose which content you want to do. They don’t want to force players to do PvP (Dragon Ball), gambling (Moa Racing), or see time-limited content (Firework Finale), so they only require enough achievements so you don’t have to do those. You CAN do those if you want, but you didn’t have to. When Dragon Ball wasn’t counting, they gave players more leeway to complete the meta.

Looking at it another way, they seem to have basically given everyone two free achievements without actually giving them the achievements.

If that’s not actually the case, then consider that maybe they weren’t able to add the Dragon Ball achievement hook (or didn’t want to) in a hotfix, but could lower the required number of achievements.

I don’t know, I’m just an onlooker here. :P

There are two things:

1. There will be effigies in the normal world that you can light, likely somewhat similar to how you can bash pinatas (although we don’t actually know the mechanics behind this yet).

2. The Effigy Lighting Ceremony itself is an instance available sometime today, the effigies you light will likely start appearing around the same time. The instance will most likely grant you a different, story achievement.

We don’t know the mechanics around the lighting of the effigies for the Burn Down The Dragons achievement.

There should be a wiki on how to use a wiki.
Rule #1 should be: Don’t trust information that doesn’t come with an official source. Sadly, the GW2 wiki isn’t really the most professional with sources.

Most of the sources for the content on the wiki is the game itself, so…kinda difficult to provide sources for that. :P

Well, yes and no.
I’m working with video games in an academic context and I know it’s quite hard to cite appropriately from them. Most standardised guidelines simply require you to reference the video game a line is taken from, which makes it very much impossible for the reader to determine whether or not that line actually is from that game. (It’s pretty much like quoting a line from a book and only referencing the book’s title and telling the reader he has to read the book in order to find the quote.)
However, since wiki’s make use of footnotes, there’d be a lot of room to elaborate where a certain information is coming from. If it’s in game you could for example state which character gave the information, in which area it can be found in game or which menu it can be read up on.

The reference is usually the page it’s on, though. It’s redundant and a waste of time/effort/reader’s attention to put a footnote saying a quote is from the NPC when that part is obvious because you’re on that NPC’s article. We don’t really feel we need to elaborate that the dialogue you get from talking to the NPC is from walking up to the NPC and talking to the them in-game. Most of this is pretty much assumed, and rightly so. Same with inventory vendors…if it’s sold by that vendor, and you’re on that vendor’s page, why do we need to elaborate that the information was gathered by walking up to the NPC and opening the vendor list and mousing over each item for the details?

(Note: I mainly do dialogue and lore stuff on the wiki, so I’m using that as the main example.)

Now, in the past, there have been a few editors/contributors who insisted that, for example, dialogue should always go on the NPC that said it. Recently, we’ve generally moved to placing such dialogue on the event/content it came from (if said in a dungeon, it goes on that dungeon’s page, etc) and the NPC’s page links to that, to preserve context and avoid swapping back and forth, so that readers can get the whole picture.

I’ve also been trying to enforce a standard where each dialogue is prefaced by a small header saying when that dialogue is encountered. See the Defending Shaemoor page, as an example. Each piece of dialogue has a small header giving a contextual hint on how you get that dialogue, such as when you approach a NPC, during an event.

Unless there’s information pulled from outside the game, I don’t really know what references we could include that the article, headers, text/pictures itself, etc don’t already accomplish.

Dragon Bash Experience achiev still possible?

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

It’s not only possible, you have to actively avoid content to not get it.

There are 5 story achievements, that leaves three that you need to get if you play all the story content. The candy achievement is incredibly easy to get (really only takes a lot of clicking), pinatas just take time over the course of the event, and once the 18th comes around you can hit up the effigies. 8 achievements, there you go.

If you have money, just bet a few times on the moa racing. I got the achievement without ever getting first place.

I honestly don’t know how the 18th got there, though. The info is readily available saying it’s the 17th and from what I can see, the person who put it there in the first place is a real stickler for details, so I can only guess it was a typo.

However (plot twist) on this page, which I’ve used for a general guide, it says 17th… but before the 11th, it said 16th.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/index.php?title=Dragon_Bash

Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhh….that was me. In my defense, that was originally put in prior to the actual release (when I was quickly dumping a lot of info onto the page in preparation for the release and posting it here for everyone), and it said 16th for only 1.5 hours. Technically it wasn’t incorrect, though…if you attended between 14th and 16th you would get it. It just went on longer than the 16th. :P

How long will last the burning effigy event ?

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

The official info for this on the wiki said to make sure you log in on Tuesday to take part in it, so I would not be expecting the effigy event to last beyond today….

That’s more because you’ll want to be there due to what happens (we’re using the wording from the releases page on guildwars2.com, they don’t want to give away what happens but still get across that you will WANT to see it). The lighting ceremony itself is an instance, and the information says it’s “starting” on the 18th, not that it’s on that date. It’s kicking off the next part of the story. I have absolutely zero information that someone wouldn’t be able to complete it after that date. You’ll notice that the fireworks, the only time-limited content I know of in this event, specifically states how long it will be available.

Until we’re told it’s being removed at a certain date, I’m going with “it’ll be an active instance until the end of the event”. Plus, based on what I know, I highly doubt it’ll only be active today.

I actually thought that doing research online was an integral part of playing an MMO. In the days of growing up on Everquest we were lucky to have online access to maps with locations and co-oridantes that we could print out. Lazy, lazy, lazy, players who never had to play in four feet of snow with a Dial Up Connection…

Same here. :P

Best we could hope way back when was EQAtlas and Allakhazam/Caster’s Realm/Lucy being accurate. I was really into doing that research. I think it’s something that all games need to encourage in some form or another, with as little pain as possible. That, and adapting to whatever the devs throw at you. :P

The Effigy Lighting Ceremony is a single player instance, according to the blog post. There is no information about it being removed before the end of the event. And yes, there’s a reason it’s in an instance instead of the open world. Complete the instance to get the achievement (yes, there’s an achievement…no, it’s not the lighting 50 effigies one).

No, it just begins on the 18th. As in, it’s not available before the 18th.

They’re waiting until the 18th to add them because the in-game Effigy Lighting Ceremony doesn’t begin until the 18th (today), so they aren’t available until then. the fireworks are the only limited time content as far as I am aware of, and is marked as such.

Wikis are like people. They are never 100% reliable. Ever.

We try and want it to be, but yeah, it’s not 100%. Unfortunately I never saw that page before, or I would have corrected it (it’s corrected now, but it doesn’t help the situation). The correct date/time range for the fireworks was listed on the main release page (linked at the top of this forum), but honestly that doesn’t matter when incorrect information is on the page the player ended up visiting through the /wiki command. It sucks, I’m sorry that those who looked at that one thought it extended to today due to the typo. I don’t really want my helms (I got it through the overflow bug), but I can’t send them to anyone or I would.

It sucks. Sorry about that. We’re trying to make the wiki as accurate as possible, but things do slip through (we are human…well, most of us). I’ve been working to keep the main Dragon Bash release page as accurate as possible, hence why I posted the link (that the mod was helpful enough to sticky), so that’s always a good place to check in the future.

Please just sell weapon tickets directly

in Living World

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

Put tickets in the chests from day 1, sell tickets on the gem store halfway through event. Chests become a bonus, “chance to get them before anyone else and show them off”, which is a pretty strong driving force, but players can always wait and get them directly/guaranteed and don’t feel like they’re being scammed. Then put the tickets into the BLC after event is over, increasing the BLC’s chance value over time.

I think that’s the best solution overall.

RNG isn't the problem, gems are

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

Gems aren’t the problem, it’s how the RNG is set up and the lack of mitigating systems to the downsides of RNG. This way is actually slightly backwards from how skins are normally gotten. In the rest of the game, for the most part, you could work towards a skin (temple skins, dungeon skins, etc) or buy it off the trading post directly. These Jade skins (and the Fused/Sclerite ones) are/were RNG only, meaning you could try extremely hard to get one and still never get it. RNG systems need some sort of mitigation factor so that you will eventually get one even if the RNG is bad for you.

If we’re all piping in on what they should change, I might as well:

1. Beginning of event, have coffers (frequent drop, as is) and rich coffers (gem store). Coffers work as current, rich coffers have much lower chance of junk (candy, fireworks), so players don’t feel like they spent gems on something that would take 2 minutes to get.

2. Put more than just 1-2 interesting items in the coffers, which a significantly (though still not guaranteed) chance of getting the non-junk/token items. Main source of those items should be the normal coffers. Instead, put the mini, the ticket, other skins and items related to the event (like Kasmeer’s armor, or some other skin), BLC keys, and even Jorbreakers (it’s a token, but it’s worth a lot of farming of the candy, so players don’t see it as huge of a waste). Even if you don’t get the ticket, you should relatively easily get SOMETHING interesting (like 1 in 4 or so) for your gems. Make those other items sellable on the trading post or something.

3. Halfway through the event, put the tickets sellable on the trading post, account-bound. Note: Tell the player base you’re doing this ahead of time. The price on these could be higher…players seem to hate the RNG far more than the price.

4. After the event, put the tickets into the BLC and the rest of the items into either the BLC or the next coffer. You want those other interesting items in the coffers. This increases the BLC’s worth over time as more weapon skins become available for the random chance.

This creates a setup where the coffers become the only source of the tickets for a couple weeks, meaning players have a chance of getting them before anyone else (a driving force for buying the rich coffers). If you hate RNG, though, you have to delay gratification to get them…but you WILL get them, so you don’t hate the coffers as much. The regular coffers provide access to the various materials and tokens for the event, but will still award the interesting items over time, and they drop like…well, candy, so they’re useful.

I really think something like that is the best setup that provides an incentive to buy the boxes, but doesn’t feel like they’re restricting players from getting something nice if they’re unlucky.

How can the community help with story? (wiki)

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

One of the things I frequently heard during the last month’s content (Secret of Southsun/Last Stand at Southsun) was that many players didn’t know what was going on, that the story wasn’t clear, or there wasn’t any story at all as far as they could see.

Setting aside comments whether ArenaNet should do more or make the story in-your-face and inescapably clear what is going on or enforcing some sort of linear, structured story setup (whether we like it or not), I’m more curious on what we as a community can do to help guide players and make them aware of the story, from those of us who go in-depth and learn every little piece.

This first week of Dragon Bash has been basically a setup for the upcoming story. You have the event active, all the Captain’s Council present, festivalgoers and protesters present as well, and Kiel herself is guarding the stage for the Effigy Lighting Ceremony becoming active tomorrow (where I believe the story will really be kicking off). The stage is set for the remainder of the event and the next one.

No spoilers from those who have already begun digging into the DAT file (I know you’re out there), but considering the effigy ceremony is an instance (Memories on the Pyre, public blog post link above) and we have another release coming mid-way through the Dragon Bash, it’s obvious there’s story incoming.

Even the most optimistic fan knows that there will be players who don’t know where to go, what to do, or may miss stuff, without it necessarily being their fault. This is where I believe the wiki comes into play, since we try to document everything (items, events, books, instances, NPCs, dialogue, etc). What can we do to help provide information? Can we provide “points of interest” of sorts, pointing out the major story pieces/NPCs that players should talk to in order to get the story? Is there something else that can be documented to help?

What can we do to help average players keep track of the story and not feel like they missed something?

Please, leave personal opinions of the gem store, money grabbing, ArenaNet dropping the ball, etc out of this thread. This is about what the community can do to help itself.

I know what you’re talking about, let me do some searching.

Edit: Okay, not quite your wording, I think it might be what Ravious was referring to. Here you go, a panel from 2008 celebrating 3 years of Guild Wars:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGJvedNjZI0&feature=player_detailpage#t=423s

He’s answering a question: If you could rewrite lore, is there anything you would change?

Answer: I would have redeemed Abaddon. That was one of the things when we were originally doing the story for Nightfall, we were talking about, you know, would Abaddon be ultimately destroyed? Or would we find a way to redeem him and to bring him back? And we examined it, we turned it over and saw how it would go over in gameplay and came back to it again and again and we decided in the end that we had to kill him.

But if given another chance and a different set of resources, I think I would have gone for redemption.

…and I’m not Eld…I just have a good memory. :P

Let me explain how this works.

The firework event cycle (them happening every two hours) was started at 9:00 AM PDT. The event itself is tied to the ingame time and will happen at dawn (ingame). So your fireworks might not have happened yet, as it is not dawn ingame.

Apologies for us not communicating this more clearly. But the fireworks will happen every two hours over the course of the weekend, so plenty of time to marvel at them and get the achievement.

Isn’t two hours the day cycle?

So basically every dawn after 9am PDT today will have fireworks. Yeah, that particular piece of information wasn’t communicated.

I guess it’s a tradeoff for having a day cycle instead of the time-locked situation in GW1, but that’s…a bit annoying. It’s much easier timing it on real life time.

Edit: Or…maybe we can get the servers day cycle synced!

I’ll look into having some of our wiki gurus expand the functionality, since this is one of the first event timetables for the GW2 wiki, and one of the first (if not the first) that lasts more than a day.

Green means it hasn’t occured yet, grey means it has or is currently running. This is just for Friday, I’ll see if we can get the entire weekend soon.

Fireworks Thread - Overflow and Achievement issues

Hopefully someone who knows how to do it will add something to the wiki like the GW1 wiki has for all the event finales – a box with the times in PDT and UTC that automatically marks off which ones have happened and which are still upcoming.

Let me look into this.

We've all had enough...

This has actually come pretty full circle now.

First of all the events have been pretty drastically different. Yes you can pick out the similarities (pumpkins == pinatas == snowmen, spirit doors == holograms), but at the same time its not fair to ignore the differences. Halloween had the scavenger hunt, Mad kings realm, Tower and boss fight. Wintersday had the Floating toy factory, Choir game, Wonderland JP. Super Adventure Box was just bat kitten nuts. Flame and Frost had a temporary dungeon. Snowball fights were nothing like Dragonball. The list can go on and on and on.

Even the way they dispensed their special skins has been different. Drops, titles, cash shop direct, temporary reskins, rng boxes, crafting.

What I personally have “had enough of” is players trying to tear down events with posts like this. The RNG boxes aren’t going anywhere. Look at the number of posts about it. They echo every event. Anet has never responded to them. Do you think they just haven’t noticed? Of course they have. But people are still buying them in troves apparently. So make a statement with your dollars instead of forum posts.

This is pretty similar to Halloween so far, to be honest, not in the same order though. We’ve even gotten an early spoiler that there’s going to be some sort of scavenger hunt.

Holograms need more hp

Seems they got their “Buff”. We shall just see how much they were buffed…

more hp???? Really wtf!? how is this relevant? So let me understand this everyone wants them to be harder? Why? Apparently they never saw Winter’s Day mobs, those were near godlike dmg and hp. And everyone wants more of it. Being a low level it was IMPOSSIBLE to farm those things and you guys want more of that crap? Some people farm them solo you know and not in groups, what about them? Sad day indeed in GW2. This is ridiculous >.>

They can die in low level zones in less than a second. i.e. lots of people couldn’t tag them to get the coffers even if they try. Raising their health so they’ll survive long enough for the tag is natural.

There’s a difference between raising their health so people can tag them and raising them to “godlike hp”. Just ask the guardians how much health they’ve added to their spirit weapons and how godlike that made them.

Bad design decisions IMO: The hologram boxes

The new patch today supposedly raised the health of the minions. They might live longer now.

Dragon’s Jade Wep Skins Not Super Exclusive

The weapon vendors will go away, and clearly you did not play guild wars 1 or you would know that these HOLIDAYS repeat every year.

“exclusive items” will be very rare.

How do you know? GW1 is a different game.

Dragon Bash is simply the Dragon Festival from GW1, aside from the dragon festival having more fun stuff to do, they’re pretty much the same.

You know, I went back and checked what the first year of Dragon Festival had.

  • 7 missions that only appeared at certain times for limited duration
  • 4 quests
  • Dragon Arena
  • Whack-a-Wurm
  • Nine Rings and Rings of Fortune (buy tickets and stand in a ring a while to get rewards)
  • candy, fireworks consumables
  • a finale event where you gathered items spread around the outpost while being chased by enemies, and if the players got more points everyone got a hat.

So far we have in Dragon Bash after 3 days

  • Holographic minions spread through several zones
  • Dragon Ball
  • pinatas, fireworks, candy
  • later will have effigies
  • 6 storyline achievements
  • new miniatures and a new weapon set out of coffers that are extremely plentiful
  • fireworks finale where you get a hat (more may be happening here too, we don’t know enough details right now…something about moving golems and various references, and apparently we really don’t want to miss it)

And we still have more incoming. Honestly I kinda found the GW1 Dragon Festival a little boring. The games weren’t really all that interesting…and two of the things to do required just standing somewhere. It wasn’t until the following year that they added the rollerbeetle racing, and that was pretty much it. They didn’t add much of anything beyond that…even the hat stayed the same.

Too many repetitive tasks

RNG is naturally streaky…I wouldn’t open a ton of boxes in one go, you could easily hit a streak. RNG becomes even chances over time.
