Obsidian Sanctum for achievement, really? [merged]

The monocle comes from the Aetherblade Retreat dungeon boss chest. Caching Out actually does not have a material reward for completing it. Only the meta achievement does and that’s for the mini Horrik. You only need 12 of the 20 achievements to get the meta, so you can skip this one if that’s all you care about.

Try these. I honestly have no idea if they work, but could help out. Apparently it gives you 5 minutes of invisibility, but I cannot confirm right now.

Spent 3 hours on last boss. Still never got it down. It is seriously a luck fest because there will be times I don’t get a single cannon shot at me, not one. like I can just stand there for 20 seconds and be 400 yards away from danger. should remove artificial difficulty and just make a kitten pattern

It’s going to be annoying if he fires a static field at you and since you’re 400 yards away from danger you can’t help the fight with it. :P

Boss Mechanics Quick guide

Vahkris.6847

Stage 1: laser at ground height.

You can outpace this one, or you can all just stand on the boxes and fire at the golems with ranged weapons.

/snip

Cannoneer & Duelist phase: the Duelist starts with 10 stacks of shield. Each stack reduces damage, like the Crazed Karka Queen. You remove these stacks by having her stand in the blue aoe pool (it looks like a blue-filtered Necromancer well). If you kill the Cannoneer, she gets all 10 stacks back and uses an AoE wave (remember F&F boss?). You can start doing damage to her once she isn’t at 10 stacks, but you’ll do more damage when most of the stacks are gone.

1. You can actually jump over this wall if you time it right.

2. It’s 10% damage reduction per stack.

Spirit weapons should absolutely have a cool down. They’d become extremely unbalanced if they didn’t have that. Every other class (and skill type) has to deal with cool downs. Why should we get special treatment and not have to worry about them? Part of using spirit weapons effectively is taking the cool down into account.

He means their uptime duration, not their cooldown after being destroyed/commanded.

And if you meant that, then I should point you towards the necromancers whose minions don’t have this and are pretty much what OP is talking about.

I agree, I don’t see the purpose in making them temporary now since they aren’t invulnerable anymore. I only run a spirit weapon underwater because my underwater build sucks, the skills I want to use aren’t available, and I don’t know what else to put there.

What happened with phase 2 of dungeons?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

Correct! I think some of you are making assumptions that living world means the stuff we’ve done the last few months and that’s all you’re going to see.

I’m going to go out on a limb here, but that’s probably because that’s most of what we HAVE seen. I mean, it’s nice to talk about what’s going to happen and all, such as previous living story content making it into fractals or guild bounties, etc. It’s definitely nice to know where things are going and it’s nice to hear you and others talk about it instead of silence and assume nothing’s going to happen. However, until anything actually makes it into the game…it’s just that: Talk.

A lot of the assumptions and grumbling are because, well, we haven’t actually seen the results of that talk. We haven’t seen anything from previous content make it into game permanently yet, except referenced in other temporary content. We haven’t seen the game significantly grow, despite the large number and frequency of updates.

We want the game to actually grow and get bigger, not expand and contract as it has been (with all good intentions), and while other MMOs have a slower update speed…those updates usually stay around and add to the game and give more things to do in the long term. Unfortunately, in the eyes of a very large number of players…that’s a preferable method.

Temporary content in other MMOs have mostly been a prelude to the more tangible permanent chunks of content that was incoming. They’ve been prelude and lead-in events to a new expansion or major release. They really haven’t been known to be the actual content, so I think that’s jarring for many of the player-base.

If a piece or two of content from previous Living Stories actually showed up permanently, perhaps the grumbling will die down a bit. Hopefully that might be sooner rather than later.

Edited to add: We also plan to do a lot of reward work across the board, including on our dungeons, but we’ll go into more specific detail on that in July as a comprehensive summary.

Considering the amount of hype you’ve been doing for this July summary of stuff, I’m not sure anything you could put in there could satisfy. :P But again, we need actual results, not just more talk of what you (the team) want to do. That’s what will get players more excited and less grumbly.

I do have concerns about it being in WvW, but on the other hand there’s not actually any physical rewards for Caching Out, just the achievement. You can easily get the meta without these two achievements, so the downside is just not getting those two achievements. Poor consolation for a completionist, but there it is.

As far as I know, the Aetherblade Caches are indeed temporary. Only the Sea of Sorrows Scavenger Hunt and the jumping puzzle will be permanent.

Shame it seems so few people had the opportunity to experience the games of yore… back when all you got was “There is a small mailbox here.”

Imagine having a gamer think for themselves….

Actually I want them to do that for at least some content, but specifically point out that it’s harder content that doesn’t have in-your-face instructions on what to do, a challenge to the player base to complete. Make it extra stuff, not the main course.

We’re never going to get this type of content en masse, though, until they can train players to look beyond the “shiny star above NPC heads” with instructions plainly pointed out on a UI tracker and via achievements. It’s very possible to do, it’s just training them to look for certain things. They already trained them to head towards the orange circles. We can be trained…it just takes effort.

The Mad King Memories scavenger hunt was very much like this. No achievements to track, just using clues to figure out the next thing to do. I want more of this. It brings the community together as we figure out where to go.

Then throw a huge monkey wrench in the searching by randomizing certain steps to split up where players are going so everyone’s not crowding the same NPC.

Hell, I’ll design one and give it away for free. :P

Remember you logged the arcane sample from Vorrk? Basically Mai’s initial excuse is that she was touching the charr, who had been part of adding the ingredients that caused the explosion. Each of the representatives added individual ingredients, but the culprit would have been the only one to handle them all (theoretically).

Now that Marjory had samples from each of them (you had to log Vorrk’s because he was dead, the others could arrive and provide it then), she could fine-tune it to only look for those specific samples instead of just general arcane residue. She states that she recalibrated the box to look for the combination of ingredients. The representatives would have been cleared because they only handled their own, but Mai was revealed because the box detected them all.

Yes, yes, I remember. Now I don’t know the exact dialoque anymore when Majory talked about the Tassi Box. And it is not (yet) in the Wiki. Did she say she got it directly from Tassi? Or from someone else(then it might be someone else from the Priory and it might be the E that she talked about “This isn’t the first time he’s provided what I needed before I even knew I needed it.”)

I haven’t been able to go through the instance myself (hence why it’s not in there, I’m working off of videos and screenshots at the moment), but I’ve heard it referenced that she “got it” from her. Possibly bought it, but I can’t be sure yet.

Who is E?

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

On second thought… yes. You might be right. We don’t know if they assume everyone played the previous Living Story content – then they would not have let the mail start with “you may not know me” if it was Ellen Kiel(they would know each other).

Also Ellen Kiel directly might have intervened and done something to stop the ceremony if she already knew before – and she might have acted different when you talked to her.

But I don’t think the name ends with E? I don’t have the different mails saved anymore… but according to Wiki:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dragon_Bash_mail#Effigy_Ceremony

The sender’s name was E. Not ____E. The thing where they show something like ___E is – at least according to the Wiki more like —--E and the same with Majory —--Majory… maybe only to indicating that they are signing the mail there. Also it is a capital E.

Edit: Also I think it might be someone who is currently in Lion’s Arch – because he knows stuff from there. Or he he has connection to someone there… via Order of Whispers… that might make sense. But wouldn’t they investigate themselves instead of needing a private investigator?

Edit2: So I don’t think it is someone of the Order of Whispers. Reading the dialogue again (at Wiki: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hard_Boiled she says "Is that so? I shouldn’t be surprised. This isn’t the first time he’s provided what I needed before I even knew I needed it. " ) Also later they are talking about some “Tassi Box” – that investigation kit. Tassi that guy from the Priory?

There is 1 guy from the Priory with name starting with E in Lion’s Arch at the moment:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Magister_Elwin_Huntsley

And he is human.

1. The “–E” is indeed the signature for mail. All normal mail (at least for the Living Story) that has a signature does this, it’s built into our template even.

2. The Tassi Box is in reference to Magister Tassi who was the start NPC for the scavenger hunt in the Halloween content. She gave you a Candy Powered Matter Meter to help find ghosts for the hunt. The box is an altered form of that device.

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

Yes, yes and yes.
It would actually be that easy! And it’s quite a puzzle to me why this isn’t done since most of those directions are in the patch notes anyway, so the only work that would have to be done is implementing them into the game.

I said simple, not easy. If the code behind that section doesn’t support it, they’d have to add it, which may or may not be easy depending on how that code is set up and how it works with everything else, as well as resource allocation. It’s definitely the simplest though, because it doesn’t require new NPC dialogue, mail, animation, or voice acting, and probably the best solution…at least for linear plots.

Why does Dragon Ball not count?

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

Forcing PvP onto PvE is why it doesn’t count.

That said I agree that making it ‘any 8 of the 10’ would be better.
AND I agree that this doesn’t belong on the wiki, but on the in-game tooltip.

It should be marked in-game, I agree, put a star on the ones that count or something. Full communication on what counts for the achievments is best. It should be on the wiki also, since it documents the game.

However, I don’t agree that it shouldn’t be part of the meta. The whole idea of only requiring a subset of the total achievements for the meta was in line with their idea that players should be able to do the content they want and get rewarded (you can avoid PvP and moa racing and still get it, just like you didn’t have to get the Sample from Southsun at the end of the jumping puzzle). These really should have been included, but obviously not required to get the meta (similarly to how Crab Toss counted for that meta).

As far as why they don’t, we don’t know other than they don’t. Speculation ranges from “they hate PvPers” to “something prevented it from counting, so they just left it out”.

More bad communication (spoilers inside).

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

They should take their “Special Event” box that they’ve had for every event so far and use that to point out what they should be doing next when it’s a linear setup like this, similar to the Personal Story, changing each step. It’s the simplest answer to these concerns, IMO.

1. Read your mail
2. Find Marjory Delaqua.
3. Speak to Inspector Kiel to enter the scene of the crime.
4. Investigate suspects with Marjory at the scene of the crime.
5. Return to Lion’s Arch to continue your investigation.
6. Read your mail.
7. Search for Vorrk, Marraloo, and Kasparak.
8. Inspector Kiel and Marjory are confirming reports on the remaining suspects and will notify you when they are located.

Wiki screwed me out of the helmet and achiev!

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

The reference is usually the page it’s on, though. It’s redundant and a waste of time/effort/reader’s attention to put a footnote saying a quote is from the NPC when that part is obvious because you’re on that NPC’s article. We don’t really feel we need to elaborate that the dialogue you get from talking to the NPC is from walking up to the NPC and talking to the them in-game. Most of this is pretty much assumed, and rightly so. Same with inventory vendors…if it’s sold by that vendor, and you’re on that vendor’s page, why do we need to elaborate that the information was gathered by walking up to the NPC and opening the vendor list and mousing over each item for the details?

(Note: I mainly do dialogue and lore stuff on the wiki, so I’m using that as the main example.)

Now, in the past, there have been a few editors/contributors who insisted that, for example, dialogue should always go on the NPC that said it. Recently, we’ve generally moved to placing such dialogue on the event/content it came from (if said in a dungeon, it goes on that dungeon’s page, etc) and the NPC’s page links to that, to preserve context and avoid swapping back and forth, so that readers can get the whole picture.

I’ve also been trying to enforce a standard where each dialogue is prefaced by a small header saying when that dialogue is encountered. See the Defending Shaemoor page, as an example. Each piece of dialogue has a small header giving a contextual hint on how you get that dialogue, such as when you approach a NPC, during an event.

Unless there’s information pulled from outside the game, I don’t really know what references we could include that the article, headers, text/pictures itself, etc don’t already accomplish.

I think we’re talking about two different things here.
I am with you that some things (like vendor’s items) do not need to be referenced because they are self evident.
With lore I think it’s a different thing. Let me give you an example I’ve run across in the past days (because I like looking up lore on your wiki):
So in the past days, for obvious reasons, I’ve been looking up the Captain’s Council of Lion Arch on wiki to see who they are and how they work. I found two articles dealing with the council, the one about Lion’s Arch and the standalone article about the captains council and they both contained conflicting information about the appointment of Council members.

From the Lion’s Arch Article:
If they are seen as a leader in the city, then they may purchase one of the seats on the Captain’s Council – when one becomes available

From the Captain’s Council Article:
It consists of privateer captains who are elected into office.

Unfortunately none of these informations came with a source reference, and this time around, I’m afraid it is not so self-evident where I might have to look if I wanted to know which one is accurate and which one isn’t, which is unfortunate because now I feel I’m not a lot smarter than before I looked at the wiki.

Hmmm, good point. Yeah, I see what you mean, you’re referring to more lore-based stuff. I know where the first one comes from, not sure where the second one comes. Ironically, this example may actually be both being true…since it’s purchased…but there may be some sort of election.

The problem here is that due to the size of the city, many random named NPCs have yet to be documented, so most of the information just gets put onto the city’s page if it’s relevant. The first one in particular, though, is indeed documented (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Advisor_Evellana).

How can the community help with story? (wiki)

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Vahkris.6847

Vahkris.6847

By the time you keep track of the story on Wiki the events almost over with, so unless they re-run the exact same story later on it’s of no use. You need guides & tips which are “real time”, something like dulfy.net. Plus, do the players care about the story or just the goodies?

The wiki is two-fold. It lays out guides and where things are for the existing content, but also documents the game for historical reasons, including dialogue and missions. This goes beyond what guides and tips do with Dulfy and includes grabbing as much information as possible, listing events, maps, documenting NPCs, dialogues, personal story, professions, skills…as much as we can, so players can look the information up both during and after the content.

Not players care about the story (I’ll put you down for “don’t care”), but many want to look back on the lore that happened because they either missed it the first time while playing or they played the pieces so far apart that it’s harder to piece it together. I want to make sure the information is in a readable and understandable format, but what I consider such may not be what others do.

Hence the thread.

The actual quote, in the Notes section of http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Giganticus_Lupicus:

“The creature depicted in Guild Wars 2 is much smaller, indicating either the skeletons are in fact of a different race, full grown adults and the undead Giganticus Lupicus is a juvenile, or simply that a retcon has taken place to make the Great Giants smaller than previously established. "

It’s listing different possibilities for why the Giganticus Lupicus in-game is smaller than the previously known skeletons. i.e., it’s speculation. AFAIK there’s no actual confirmation.
