No offense but I hope to god they do NOT come back EVER… These should be something that people who have been around since the beginning have a priviledge of owning. They can go ahead and make new weapons but I will be EXTREMELY kittened off if they bring these back…

So only people who happened to be around and got extra lucky, or who bought them from someone who got extra lucky should be allowed to have them? Sorry, but go be kittened off in your special “none for you all for me” elitist corner. I was here for Halloween last year. I did all the events and got 100% on the achievements, but I didn’t please the RNG gods and was not willing to spend the gold to buy a skin so I couldn’t get them. So should I not get the chance again to make good on that just because you happened to be lucky? That is a big honking load of bullkitten right there.

and again… this isn’t elitism… this is working my tail off farming BLC keys in order to open TONS of chests and get the skins that we were told would be gone FOREVER after Halloween ended. To be honest I suppose I just don’t get this sense of entitlement that everyone has. Why is it that you think you should be entitled to get something that you weren’t here for a year ago? To put it into real world terms, you find a collectors item that you like or an antique. Do you A) pay a premium price to have something you want due to it no longer being made since you want it so desperately or contact the manufacturer and demand they make the item again and sell it to you at original price because it’s not fair you weren’t around when they were originally made?

To me trying to argue for option B is a bit ludicrous and the same principle is applicable here. When Halloween was winding down last year they SPECIFICALLY put onto the BL page to get the Mad King Chests now before the Halloween skins were gone FOREVER… yes, they said FOREVER…

Limited time item, does not mean “Wont ever come back”. Or do you also buy coins off late night infommericials?

Also you worked your tail off to get chests? Two things wrong with that. 1. Working to farm items in a game is a bit sad. See, most people “work” at “work” and play a game to “play”. When that line gets crossed, you need to look at a bigger picture. 2. Its all RNG man. Don’t matter how many chests. Its not like you did something your average monkey could not do. Some got lucky, some didn’t. Stop making it sound like you did something amazing lol.

Yes, yes, we know. Whether it is a 5 man group, or an open world event, this is all I hear. How many times during Golem MkII do I have to hear the same thing over and over again? “For great Justice” tops my list. Seriously, next time you are in a crowded area, count how many times you hear it. Its starts to get annoying.

Is there any possibly way we can have an option to turn off player speech? The voices are well done, just not varied enough to justify having to hear it.

I’ll have to echo the sentiment that it really does feel like it’s not going where it has the potential to go.

If they focused more on making the game fun, the rest of what they want would follow/be a result of the game entertaining more players.

As a person studying game design right now I think that they’re doing a great job at it. You say that they should focus on making the game fun, however could you give suggestions how? Is the new TA path not fun? It has very original mechanics. And then how would you decide what’s fun and what’s not when everyone has a different idea of fun? For some Scarlet invasions is pointless farming, for others it’s their idea of fun.

What exactly is the “original mechanic” about the Aether path? Kiting a boss during a fight? Done in HoTW as well as CoF p2. Traps? Done in just about every single dungeon already. Dragging “add mobs” onto certain things on the floor? Done in AC as well as underwater fractal. How is anything done on that path “very original” ? It isn’t.

Also take the fact that all the living world content that has been added so far, and realize most of it is gone now. Instead of adding to the world, you have time gated temp content.

I was excited about the LS. I was under the impression it was like an ever growing expansion. Adding things more and more. It isn’kittens an AP grind, scavenger hunt that lasts a few weeks. When its gone, you have a new back item to show for it.

If this is how the rest of GW2 is going to be, then I see GW2 the game to play until something else comes out. I hope that Anet realizes this and 1. Makes the LS add content, permanently, or 2. Releases a content packed expansion very soon.

After the 4 winds thing, I cared less and less for the LS after I realized all of it is pretty much temp content for AP and an ugly back piece.

Didn’t even bother with SAB. It might have been funny and “cute” once, but it does not fit into GW2. The Queens Gauntlet and Pavilion was “ok” the first day. Again, it passed and has had no impact on the “world” content. The new path in TA is “ok”. Finished it the day it came out in about an hour, got my ugly back item. Whoop dee doo.

Living World I thought would be adding content, changing the world, changing the landscape, cities, new monsters, etc. etc. After some time I have realized Living World = Temp content scavenger hunts with ugly back items.

Give me an expansion please.

Is my Ranger Build Okay?

Just my input, you don’t HAVE to go either power or condition. You can do both.

I have been loving a power/crit/condition build. With a hybrid type build with no food, I can crit for a good amount, condition damage is good, and not made of glass. I have about 64% crit chance with 80% crit damage, 550ish conidition damage, 2990 power, 2711 armor, and 19k health, and a little healing at 190.

I hate switching gear, and I hate changing traits in order to do something else, so I prefer a build that can do good at it all. I also hate bandwagon builds that everyone jumps on because someone posted a video about it.

Anyway I agree with the other folks that your build is pretty squishy, but I don’t agree that you can only go one direction in the power or condition department.

Right now the best rangers builds are builds where the ranger and his compagnion cope for eachother weakness. Like a tanking pet and a dps ranger, a dps pet and a support ranger… etc.
Rangers that work with their pets usually best a way to heal or do damage while their pet will tank or do another type of damage.
For apothecary stats, pets will gain toughness (alway welcome), healing power (absolutely not welcome) and condition damage (here, you absolutely don’t want your pet to compete against you for bleed stack or poison).

So this kind of change, except for power build will just work against a symbiosis between the ranger and his companion. Not to mention that this will probably throw rangers dps builds out of balance.

A tanking pet would be still be a tanking pet, a dps would still be a dps pet, just better at it.

You are saying a Power build ranger only uses something like a Bear pet to off set his non-tankiness? A tanky build only uses dps pets to offset its damage? LOL.

Point being pets are not all that right now. You are trying to come at folks with the idea that the pet and its symbiotic relationship with the ranger already works well. It doesn’t. If it did, then maybe this idea would not work so well.

Pets don’t scale to the new weapons and the armor that is coming soon. Taking stats from the Ranger and adding them to the pet, not only makes sense, but even further gives diversity to builds. Stop trying to justify a broken mechanic, and maybe think of something better.

I noticed after the world boss upgrades. But if it is intended its very oddly placed, which leads me to believe it isn’t.

Think about this, when your pet dies to the rolling boulders in CoF, it does not go on cooldown, its health is at 0 and you can actually res it like another player. Other places with traps that kills pets, the go into downed.

There are some oddities with pets in more places, but taking damage from one thing, and not others is very spotty. It just seems like a code issue. One that benefits pets slightly, but still seems too sporadic to be intended to me.

Pet is also immune to Golem MkII’s electric field (get a melee pet on it, and it take no damage the whole fight), Lava (your pet can sit in it and hit the Megadestroyer in the middle of the lava lake), and a few others I cant think of right now.

Everything but the Honed Axes is good. Keep the 10% crit damage, and add 50% condition duration. I would be real unhappy without the crit on it.

People keep saying the Living World added a dungeon. Let me clear this up for you guys….

1. Replacing one path in an existing dungeon is not adding a dungeon to the game.
2. This content was finished for me personally in one run through, more or less in an hour.

- Trap potency and trapper expertise : why in the hell it’s in the line of preci/crit strike?
- Honed axe : it’s a weapon for conditions (2 for bleeds and 3 for chill only bounce is direct damage) and this trait gave 10% crit damage when using an axe in main hand? oO
- All the traits for pets in…the line for crit damage and preci…
etc….

There is a lot of wtf traits on ranger trees who don’t even give any interest to it. Even sadly, we are supposed to be the masters of long range combat with bows and we have only 3 traits for it…even a thief with shortbow do more damage than us with same weapon

I actually like Honed Axes, but it does need something else to it. Such as a 10%crit damage + 5% increase damage with each bounce, or 30% chance to apply posion, etc. etc.

Other than that, I agree.

Lets talk about “Living World” vs. “Expansions”.

We will take an example from EQ1, and the first expansion Ruins of Kunark. Take a quick peek at the “content”.

Yeah, new playable race, tons of new zones, new dungeons, new monsters, new epic quests, new dragons, new gear, changes to the whole games world, etc. etc.

Now take a look what the “Living World” from GW2 has brought us…

Zerg farms, scavenger hunts, numerous back pieces, more scavenger hunts, more back pieces, scavenger hunts, oh….another back piece, and 1 path to an existing dungeon (that replaces a path that was already there), a totally out of place jumping game. Did I mention back pieces?

So personally, I would rather pay for an expansion that actually adds something solid to my game, not a 2 week scavenger hunt with another dippy back slot item that I delete after getting it.

Yeah, give me something meaningful. The living story aint doing it.

I agree. However a build not working with a certain pet (i.e. birds) due to wonky pet mechanics is NOT the fault of the Ranger, but Anet. Trying to make it sound like the pet fail is the person, not the game is a on the fanboy side. Defending a Band-Aid approach instead of the problem is exactly why issues don’t get fixed.

Now look at the new weapons. Take the nightmare weapon model, change a color or two, and up the brightness. Bang, “new” content rewards to hide behind RNG. That’s rather pathetic, if you ask me. It’s also sad because it shows they never intend to add in weapon dyes, as doing so would make the new Nightmare/Ether weapons pointless (ditto with the different colors of ascended).

ANet should be doing better than this.

Stop using cats and birds. It’s been shown time and again that you need muddy terrain or some kind of cripple for those pets (sword) to land. Why aren’t you using spiders or dogs? They land hits reliably.

Oh, so every Ranger needs to use those pets, and not ones they want to? Oh how dumb of them. Silly to think people don’t want to be forced to use a pet they don’t want to in order to have them work correctly. Hope the sarcasm came out in that.

Cant say anything about the dungeon yet, but getting really sick of the token rewards. Seems Anet likes to recycle these things over and over. Its like they can put poo in a box, but as long as they add another ugly back item, its “cool”.

As it is right now, with what we know, yes its sub par. The only saving grace is that we don’t know exactly what the “other” changes are, yet.

Minor tweaks wont fix the glaring issues with pets. The 70% hp increase will help in the most minute way….instead of a 2shot killing the pet, it will take 3. Whoop dee freekin doo.

If the unknown changes are like the ones we already know are coming (minor tweaks here and there), prepare to be in the same boat you are in now. Until they make pet mechanic useful (as it is what defines this class), little changes to weapon skills wont do diddly. I doubt Anet has the know-how and/or willingness to change the pet mechanic.

A thing besides the perma stow for pet I would LOVE to see….

A LB skill that is a charged up high dps power shot. Like a Ranger class in every single other MMO has. Something that take a while to charge, but hits like a truck.

Take out Rapid Fire, and add a sniper like power shot that adds 5 stack of vulnerability with a high base damage. 1-5 second cast with damage increasing the longer you wait to shoot.

Why this is missing from the class is beyond me.

at 1500 range there are few classes that can touch you in zerg vs zerg. Yes your pets ablitiy is important it doesn’t help if its dead.

I pick Ranger because of the pet. Giving a damage boost and perma stow will punish those who rightly pick the class (based on what it is not what it isn’t). With a perma stow option any ranger not using this option would be looked down upon.

search and destroy if you wait to help your team when they are dead its to late. Plus a player res is faster than a pets.

A perma stow would not change a thing for people that play with the pets. All it does it give back the dps your pet would be doing if it was attacking. We all know pets are great for 1v1, open world stuff, sure. We also know pets are usually dead on dungeons, WvW, and anything that AoE’s due to the pet not dodging or moving to a safe area.

What you miss out on by not having a pet out is utility from the pet skills. From tanking (somewhat), to cc, to posion, to buffs, etc. etc. Its a fair trade.

Warhammer had the best skill for this with the Squig Herder class. Using the squigs (pets) gave the Herder damage, as well as utilities (knock down, AoE, etc.). If you traited “All by meself” when your squig died or you stowed it, you would gain 15% damage increase.

All this does is balance the class. Pet up? Awesome. Pet down? No longer lose your F skills (yeah the only class that loses F skills AND dps due to AI), and maintain your dps. Win win.

Main-hand axe could use some work

MH axe is probably the most useless ranger weapon. spamming axe 1 as power will get u killed due to horrible range, and the dps is lower than spamming LB 1 from 1200-1500. MH axe is only used *effectively in condi builds.

MH axe needs more.

I disagree. I don’t die often. Hitting a group of enemies with Axe1 does more damage than spamming a single target with a LB, especially if you are sped’d into Axe. The chill on 3, is also good with a decent recharge. Split Axe is nice for tagging lots of targets as well as doing decent damage with decent condition damage.

I am not saying Axe MH is where it should be. It could use some love like the OP suggested. Then again saying its useless, is pretty close minded.

I use Axe 90% of the time. Having high power, high crit chance and damage, and decent Condition makes the Axe great.

The leap should not be in an auto attack chain period, imo of course.

I use sword rarely due to the silly animation (Norn Gymnastics looks dumb), and the fact that even with auto attack off, you don’t have much control to dodge, or activate evades. Now, add to the fact I have leaped off cliffs, leaped into water, or just strait past an enemy, it makes it even worse for me.

I do the like the cripple, and the pet might, but it does not offset the clunky attack of the #1 chain. You have a cripple in #2 sword skill as well. That is also rather clunky to use. And don’t get me started on Sword #3…. missing anything not standing still, or again such a long and wide attack that you fall off an area that is not flat.

If you like that auto attack of the sword, good for you, but I cant see how. Take a look at warriors, and the thief auto #1 sword skills. Those are actually good.

There isnt any code to generate a random number that will determine if it hits or misses.
So it doesnt count as a RNG (Random Number Generator).
It misses and bugs because of other factors, often environmental.
I cant believe this has to be explained.

I like the Ricochet and Winter’s Bite is alright. Its Splitblade that feels way out of place. Personally I would like to see that skill replaced. Even if the bleeds was removed making it a purely power weapon like skill 1 and 3 it would still be a melee attack unlike skill 1 and 3.
This game has enough spread shot attacks, and tbh they all suck.
I think theres only one attack thats like the Warrior’s Impale. Where they throw the weapon and it sticks in the target. Maybe have Axe skill 2 do that.
Something like;
Nature’s Embrace, Throw an enchanted axe at the target, once it hits them vines grow from it and squeeze the target. Applying constant damage, or you can press the skill again to have the axe erupt in an aoe.

I really like that suggestion. I agree.

I mainly use Axe/Axe and GS. Increasing the bounces of the auto would be nice, but adding a condition would be even better IMO.

That’s not rng. That’s called L2P and use cripple and immob.

Riiiight. My bad. Path or Scars hitting a target standing still always hits coming back, and always pulls. It never bugs with a slight elevation, or anything like that. Sarcasm

There is not one mention about Spirit Rangers. For the record, I never ran a spirit build. Also, where are you getting the whole get better or adapt crap from?

I am asking for actual developer feedback regarding the main class I enjoy playing in GW2. There is no whine, or plead to buff this or that in my OP.

Maybe you need to learn to read instead of trying to bash….

I did TA with a 5 man Ranger group. Was a blast. Sadly I was the only one I believe that played Ranger as my main though.

So the Ranger will be seeing some changes to the spirit build. We’re being very mindful to carefully shave it so that:

We don’t hurt other areas of the game where the build may not be a problem, as it is in PvP, and
We’ve already seen counters to this build showing up (there’s a thread talking about the Warrior countering this build, and to what degree) in the meta.

So, we will be “shaving” the build a little (we don’t want to over-correct the issue) and seeing how the meta adapts.

“Bad for the player, but good for the game”. Alright. Story time. The game dev community is a pretty small place, and a lot of devs know one another. We are lucky enough to have game nights with guys from WOTC (they make Magic:TG) and I got into a great conversation with one of their devs. I was talking about balancing an MMO vs a CCG, and we were swapping lessons/ideas back and forth on the things we’ve learned. I asked him about the mana system, mulligans, and how much I hated them as a player. I hate winning because my opponent mulligans, and I hate losing because of them. I asked him what he thought about that. His answer, in a word, was amazing. He said (paraphrasing), “Ya, that random sucks. Mulligans, mana floods (getting too much mana, but not enough “action” cards) and mana screws (not getting enough mana) all suck. But they add this element where anyone has a shot in any game. Basically, those things are bad for the player, but they’re good for the game.” I thought it was a great way of summing up what happens when we, as devs, have to balance various classes in an MMO. It may suck to have YOUR build and YOUR class slightly brought down in power, but, here’s the thing, it’s good for the game at large. So don’t think that we hate X class. We love all the classes. But sometimes we need to adjust a few things in order to protect the health of the overall game.

I still don’t see specific “We know Rangers are in a bad place right now”. Am I missing something out of context?

I don’t see a real use for that, personally.

I still think the best idea so far is, if your pet is on cooldown you get a 10% damage increase. That goes away with a pet swap, or natural revive. It compensates for the dps loss of your dead pet, as well as makes up for losing your “f” abilities.

ANet doesn’t read any forum but sPvP and, only recently, WvW. If you want change, your only hope is to post there. While they may pretend they read the class forums, it’s hard to believe when issues go unchanged for months on end without even a hint okittennowledgement to the problem.

That’s why everyone laughed at the other poster who said they had a 1 on 1 with ANet devs about the state of the Ranger class. If they’re aware of the issues and it legitimately is taking more than a year to resolve them, what hope do we have?

It could be worse. You could be an ele/mesmer and have the devs tell you they think where your class is at is perfect, once they bring the rest of the game in balance. I mean, at least they acknowledge that rangers aren’t in a good place haha. That counts for something.

Can you link where they acknowledged Rangers aren’t in a good place? Like I said, in my op I cant seem to find any dev feedback specifically on the Ranger class.

Don’t worry, us elementalists are in the same boat. Also the elementalist forums seem almost dead, 10 posts a day, usually QQ or new players. Anything not QQ is answered with Ele is dead.

Looking over other class forums there are plenty of Dev posts answering concerns about said class. Looking over the Ranger section, you can go pretty far back with not one comment from Anet on any Ranger concerns.

Why?

Is there a class lead? Is there a specific Ranger class lead? Why no feedback, ever on the direction of this class?

More currency grinding, more Hello Kitty-like side games, more gear grinding, more mindless zerg content….. that’s all I have seen with the past few updates.

I would pay $10 for a new zone and dungeon, or a more in depth personal quest series, I will not pay $10 for a pink, or glowy back item, or another disconnected item like “How to Dance”.

The people praising all the “content” I assume are limited in MMO gaming. As much as people bash other MMO’s at least “real” content that you paid for (i.e. expansions) brought things to the game such as Zones, Dungeons, Races, Classes, Skills, and Gear. And not “RNG hope you get lucky, no skill needed”, gear such as everything in GW2.

Not to be a downer but the fact that I have not been playing since launch like a lot of people (only some months now), and I am getting annoyed with the “No Grinding” turning into utter BS from Anet. I started playing GW2 to get away from that crap. And now its pretty much going the direction of “Guild Wars2, the fluff content and gear grind MMO”.

Not sure how much more I want to progress.

1. Its personal choice, but Norn looks ways better than a Sylvari, IMO. The whole plant thing looks silly to me.

2. Norn Warriors always look cool.

3. Norn racials are horrible. Period. I don’t think any other races are as bad. Norns shapeshift into somewhat useless animals.

4. No idea. Up to you.

Agree on everything but:

Norn elites are just AWESOME! Ever entered Bear form in WvW and chased a thief over 2000 yards, kicking him down, stunning him with your GS #4 afterwards and eating them alive? BRILLIANT!!
Or escape a boss fight using the snow leopard stealth and afterwards picking up the entire party while your bear holds the boss in combat? also: Brilliant!

The long cooldown + short duration + better options (Entangle, Rampage as one, or even the Elite Spirit) makes me never use the Norn ones. I have only used them when I am just “messing around”.

I see RaO and Entagle better in WvW. And I see Spirit of Nature very useful in a boss fight for getting allies back up.

All in all its just my opinion. If it works for you that’s great. I just cant seem to find a reason to give up a slot for any of the forms.

More Ascended gear vs. Pets

I think a more interesting question is; with ascended weapons being put into the game, will the higher damage output from foes in PvP, cause the pet to have an even harder time surviving AoE damage?

I really wish a race changer was available. If I has known the wonky camera (especially during some JP’s), and awkward movement by the Norn, I would have picked another race.

Back on topic, I am pretty sure everything will be in rotation for the sale.
