It does seem a little pricey, I’ll wait till it releases and see how much content it actually has :P.
Content has always been GW2’s problem at launch it was great, but it has had nothing new added to it in 3 years. There should be an expansion every year/18 months at max and by now we should be getting close to a new continent either Cantha or Elona, and already have a new class with this current one being the second.
The whole reason that players left and stopped playing myself included the content ran out and new stuff was never added. Which then means they lose players = less gem sales, no one recommends the game to their friends = no box sales then finally you go F2P to hopefully generate more gem sales. Problem is most people that play F2P have no money for gems which is why they are F2P in the first place.
There’s so much wrong with this post, I don’t even know where to begin. Way to generalize. lol
Edit: The fact is, once you said nothing has been added, you’ve lost any credibility you might have had. Now you might not like the stuff that was added, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there. And some of it was temporary but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.
And then believing most people feel like you do is just confirmation bias. You really don’t know how many people like it or don’t. Nor do you know how many people stayed or left. Until the expansion push, we were getting content releases and there was only minor rumbling on the forums about the pace.
Be realistic mate.
This game has remained largely unchanged in 3 years. I don’t know if you played at launch but I can tell you that this game has a fraction of the players it once had, fact.
Realistically at launch there were no fractals. There was no ascended gear. No champ bags and therefore no champ trains. There was no Edge of the Mists.
Even WvW changed when the water and krait were removed and progression was added.
There are new PvP arenas and at least 1 has been removed.
There is at least one new dungeon path, the Tequatl fight has been completely revamped, triple threat was added, mini games were added, festivals were added.
Then there was the entirety of season 1, which included the Molten Faciity, the Aetherblade Dungeon, the Nightmare Tower, and the Marionette Fight, plus Escape from Lions Arch and the Battle for Lion’s Arch.
Lion’s Arch itself was destroyed and rebuilt. Dynamic events have been added. Three zones have been added, one of which contains the Karka Queen.
You may not think the TA Aetherblade path is content, but I do.
And then there’s the entirety of the Living World Season 2, which I received for free simply by logging in.
Of course traits have changed twice, including the most recent change to core specializations.
That doesn’t included quality of life changes like being able to preview the trading post (which itself was revamped), the wardrobe, the account wallet, the removal of culling from WvW, PvP reward tracks, personal arenas, Guild Missions (you know the 3 puzzles, numerous rushes and bounties, treks and challenges).
There have also been jumping puzzles added, some of which are quite challenging not to mention long.
There has been no real content for many months now, but to say that nothing has been added to this game is not only misleading, it’s insulting. People worked kitten that content. Some of us enjoyed it.
Keep in mind you can’t transfer to a full server.

It’s been on their list of things to do for three years. I’ve never been quite sure why it’s so hard to save builds, even if you can’t load them — after all, 3rd party websites have managed this for 2.9 years.
So, I agree that they must have other priorities. What I don’t understand is why this has never been one of them.
Actually probably more like 2 years…but yeah, since an expansion was on the list…and that’s the focus, it’s how they prioritize.

I was one of the probably many people that spent $90ish dollars on the best version of guild wars 2 when it came out. I am having a hard time figuring out how it is worth spending another $50-$90 on for this new expansion just simply to get a free character slot. At the lowest option that means I am spend a total of $140 to avoid a chat restriction, economy restriction and for a character slot.
I think there should be a option to simply just upgrade my account to this new expansion. I would spend $20 to upgrade my account to the new expansion and not care if I get a character slot or not. By going free to play (even though free to play is partially limited) pretty much meant I spent $90 to get around a few limitations and for a few exclusive things which again seems like a rip off for any support of the game before the free to play came out.
I just don’t see how 1 character slot equals out to paying even more money for a game that I spent $90 in the first place that is now worthless and need to spend another $50-$90 to be on par with new players. I shouldn’t have to spend $140-$180 (depending on edition type) to have what someone could of spent $50-$90 on.
I know people will just be like O well what about games like World of Warcraft charging $60 for new expansions? The thing about spending $60 on a new expansion is that it doesn’t give you the entire game up to that point with the expansion. It only gives you that single expansion so your previous purchase isn’t made worthless like this is where you get the expansion and the original game.
I just feel like the way this expansion is priced and not giving a option to pay a lesser fee to previous supporters of the game to just upgrade without also paying for a second core game kind of throws us under the bus. To me a extra character slot is not worth the extra $25ish dollars compared to if I could just pay $25 to upgrade off my current core game.
The expansion would have to be much much smaller for them to only charge $20 for it. Their budget for the game would have been based on how much they could charge and how many they would sell. For $20 where the biggest bulk of their sales would be from people who bought the core would mean they would have to spend a whole lot less on development, and make it even smaller.
Nope.
Rift latest expansion was $24 at launch and is actually much much bigger then HoT. You can actually get it for free now if you’re unemployed, retired or just patient via in-game grind (gemstones equivalent mechanics). Also includes MULTIPLE new dungeons, new raids on top of the standard outdoor content. In fact, I would go as far as say HoT is about half the size without any new dungeons and only 1 raid but at 2-3 times the price. Pathetic.
Now, A-Nets budget might be dwindling dramatically, take for example 3 years of WvW neglect and the dwindling numbers of players there and the dead servers. I mean, LOL, do they expect people to pay them for that ?
Yep, I’m sure the six players still play Rift are welll aware of that. Rift is so far down the food chain, it doesn’t even belong in this conversation. They pretty much have to do whatever they can to keep the existing playerbase playing because it’s diminished so far.
Let’s not forget how long Rift charged a sub for, before they went free to play.
Did I mention I was a Rift player. Paid for an entire year and ended up playing four months. I’m sure they counted me for that entire year, even though I never logged in again.
At the time of this writing Rift has 7 North American servers all with a low population. And 6 european servers, all with a low population.
I’m pretty sure that Rift’s pricing policy has a lot more do to with no one caring about it than anything else.
Although I pre-purchased HoT and am really excited about HoT, I feel obliged to note that the new WvW map and the WvW changes, the PvP leagues and stronghold map and the fractal changes are all non-HoT features.
What I’m personally looking forward to the most is the maps, new story and some of the elite specializations (Reaper and probably Druid and Forge).
I may be splitting hairs here, but they are HoT features. They’re being introduced with HoT. They’re simply being made available to everyone who plays the game.
Because if there wasn’t an expansion, those features may have never come. There’s simply no way to know.
I guess it is a matter of definition. I consider a feature a HoT feature if it requires one to have HoT in order to play it, you consider a feature a HoT feature if it is released around the same time as HoT.
Not released “around the same time”. Released with HoT as part of the HoT package. Anet is saying this is coming with HoT not me.
It’s on their list of things to do. They’d like to do it, but they’re doing other stuff right now.
I think OP has a valid concern. Core maps have a lot of stuff you can do if you’re alone or there are few people about. The new map really needs a group to have something to do. I managed to do some events solo, but it was a slog and I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t want to test the new specialization. I worry that this, combined with the density of new, harder mobs will leave the maps deserted after they stop being new and fresh. Masteries may help populate them though.
There’s stuff to do that wasn’t in the beta, like adventures, which are all solo.
Where do people get so many AP’s? I’ve been playing since launch and have ~11K non-daily AP’s and 6k daily ones.
There aren’t really any non-daily AP’s left for me to get… maybe another 500 or so. but there are people with 12k more AP’s than me… where are they coming from? all from dailies?
Some of them were from Season 1 of the Living Story. Did you get those?

Why are games that I paid $60 for three years ago only $5 on steam sales. Because that’s what happens to games.
In the country where I live, game testers are usually paid for their work. In this game most testers like to do it not by receiving money, but by giving money (prepurchase); and whover does not like it (did not prepurchase) is forced to play with those testers. And if like this was not enough, the testers consider themselves the best when they defeat non-testers in PvP or WvW. It’s just awesome.
My advice for all the players is to do like I do: stop playing during beta weekends! You are spending your time and your resources to provide feedback, while receiving nothing in return, but frustration. During beta weekends I only join the game to receive my daily login reward.
For some people, the ability to provide feedback is a valuable thing indeed. Because if you don’t provide feedback and something is wrong with the game launches, then that problem has to be fixed after the fact.
Game communties often want to have a say in the process of a game moving forward. I personally find it difficult to believe why most people wouldn’t want that.
It seems as though many people have answered honestly, but some have also misunderstood what I mean by copy-paste-feste.
Copy-Paste-Feste is the same Hylek every ten feet. This IS the essence of Guild Wars 2 creature encounters. Instead of having variation it’s Hylek… Hylek… and oh look! … Hylek.
Every regurgitates its models. You have to and there is rarely reason not to in any case. The issue with Guild Wars 2, especially with Heart of Thorns is that most creatures are static. They just stand there until you must walk by them and produce agro. That’s encounter sufficiently enough of an ‘encounter’ for this game. In reality, it’s boring, lazy, and bothersome.
Teleporting Rock-dogs are interesting, but get clumped into the copy-paste-feste because that’s all they are. They’re just another rock (static creature) plopped into the middle of where we must walk through. If they intend to up creature difficulty they ought to go back to the group-encounter and group-exploration model. The model where a single character encountering a single mob should make the player pause and test whether or not they can kill it. Veterans, Champs, and that sort of thing could then be understood as ‘for certain’ difficult encounters.
Further, the placement of creatures is entirely predictable. It’s the distance of one to three maximum camera distances. Usually spaced out just enough for a player to not encounter more than 2 at a time and never as a camp. That means never truly a stand-and-fight group encounter.
In summery, this design just wastes huge swaths of HoT because it all becomes a samey-same experience. Kill this, move on, kill that, move on, kill this other thing, move on. You never stop to smell the roses. Or… in this case, take anything in.
Why waste all of that effort to make an expansion just to rush and make people feel rushed through it? It’s bad design. There’s no reason to do it. They should make more creatures, assemble them as barriers in different ways and in different combinations to form a world that feels more than Hylek copy-pasting and creatures, encounter scenarios, and long-stays in particular locations that are more fitting to an epic story. If I wanted to ride the tram to the end I’d just ask to be allowed to pay for mastery points with RL money and avoid the trouble of doing HoT repeat-a-feste-experience.
Except that the hylek are different. It’s like saying everyone has a dog. But there are different breeds of dogs. Furthermore, you’re judging an expansion by a very small area. We know for a fact three are two different types of hylek in the expansion, one of which is more like a bull frog, one of which is more like a tree frog and they’re tempermentally different. They have different lore you can train up. Having different look and lore, means they’re different creatures. Saying they’re the same is a bit disingenuous.
I’m thinking that you see a hylek and you think, well all hylek are the same. That’s like saying all sylvari are the same, and saying nightmare court are just sylvari. Or Soundless. They’re different…if you’re paying attention.
And in the case of the hylek there are two new races, of which we’ve seen only one. Why judge the entire expansion on part of one zone?
The early masteries go quite fast. Almost anyone can unlock them, even people who don’t play all that much. The later masteries, those will take much longer to get. Which is necessary for people like me who play every single day.
In Guild Wars 1, tanks used to body block, but you can’t do that here. Unless you make the shield repulse and let people use it more often.
If Anet didn’t do this, you’d be beta testing at launch and not calling it a beta test.
You can go mine quartz in Dry Top to get more. There’s a rich quartz node there that opens when you fight the Skritt Queen.
You can also get a quartz mode for your home instance or make friends with someone who has one and mine theirs.
Updrafts are strategically places to get you to content you couldn’t before access. They’re not just for flying around willy nilly. This is a small portion of the map and it has two updrafts in it. Over the four(?) zones in the expansion there’ll be a lot more. In fact, we don’t even know how much they’ll be in this section, since certain areas are off limits in the beta.
I’m glad to see this sort of thing happens rarely. I was worried it happened in almost every dungeon. After witnessing bad treatment of a newbie in my party by a veteran player I felt compelled to create this topic.
It seems like the most important point to take from all your comments is to read LFG message carefully and perhaps try to avoid exp runs. I’m going to avoid exp runs from now on too. I don’t want to witness another scene were a veteran player raging at newbie. Thanks guys/gals
You can also join a casual guild and run with like minded people or make your own LFG ads that say casual/all welcome or whatever you want them to say.
The most competitive end of any community is going to be worse than the casual end, because time is money to some people. That’s their problem. Don’t make it yours.
In your chat log, enable system messages and you’ll see when your friends log in and out.
Like Vayne said.
I’ve had those messages since day (-3).
Glad neither one of you bothered to read before replaying! Thanks for missing the point completely!
But hey! It wouldn’t be the Guild Wars two forms if people actually read what people wrote before replaying.
Thanks for your sarcasm. Some of us read forums late at night, read fast and miss stuff. I know you probably have never had that happen, but I was literally trying to be helpful and answer a question before bed.
I hope that you don’t judge everyone in your life by a single sentence in any context.
people seem to forget, how many extreme ways exist in this game to increase significantly your Exp gains …
You seem to forget that kills offer literally the lowest exp amount that you can possibly get in game. Ressing a dead NPC gives more xp than killing a mob that just respawned, mining a mithril node gives more xp, discovering a new recipe in crafting, finding a POI, viewing a vista, all of these give more xp than killing mobs.
So sure, you can get bonus xp, but it is on the lowest source of xp in the game.
I thought the new XP boosters give you XP bonus from all sources.
I don’t like trinity because it looks ridiculous.
One guy keeps 20 lizard soldiers on him while 3 other guys slash them/shoot them/bomb them safely and one guy keep healing to keep that one guy alive.
It looks stupid visually. One of the lizard soldiers should probably attack the dps/healer to end the battle faster.
I agree it does look stupid and when you simplify it like that playing it is stupid.
Problem is, we’ve done the other option (no trinity) and for some people, it’s just as bad only in the other direction.
So what to do?
You leave it. Because there are dozens of trinity games, and one without it. Let’s not ruin this one game for those of us who don’t like the trinity (and from forum threads about it, we know there are plenty out there).
Love? My love is snuggled next to me laughing right now.
The inevitability of events isn’t something one necessarily loves.
Anet, why don’t you simply admit the Trinity is an essential part of gaming beyond the zergs we’ve had for three long years?
This incremental move toward roles, clearly demonstrated in the current and previous beta events, is tiresome.
they did in a POI but it was a PR control version of it. So they admitted its needed, but without admitting they were wrong.
They didn’t say anything different in that POI than they did before launch. Your love for the trinity has blinded you to that fact.
You are going to be deeply disappointed.

Accusing Anet of keeping the tax without any evidence is just offensive. Pretty sure this thread will end up closed.
I’ll respond as I did on reddit:
If I never saw another game again with the trinity, it would be too soon. Just imagine how much fun Lord of the Rings would have been if all foes only attacked Boromir, while Gandalf stayed back and healed him and the hobbits, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli all dealt damage in relative safety.
You may believe, truly believe, that the trinity makes for a good game. But it’s contrived to the point where it removes everything that makes role-playing games great.
The thing is, Zenith, I don’t have an issue with dynamic events in and of themselves. They can be really fun content, and they can provide a lot of rewards to players.
My issue is when those events are being relied upon as the ONLY engaging content in the zone. It wouldn’t matter if Anet had 1,000 top-tier devs working on content for that zone…if all they are adding is more DE’s, the zone will still end up feeling repetitive and grindy, with no sense of progression or accomplishment because the event sequence resets every hour or two.
You’re not seeing the entire content of the zone. Adventures, for example, aren’t enabled in this BWE. You’re only seeing what Anet wants to test.
I’m enjoying the beta. I like the verticality of the zones. I like gliding trying to get to new places. I love the jumping mushrooms. The story, what little of it I’ve experienced, feels good to me.
I think HoT is worth it in major changes to game systems. The content I’ve played so far is fun, but the mastery system and the elite specialization system is enough for me, not to mention guild halls and, if you like challenging content, raids. I’m even looking forward to the Pact Commander mastery line.
So what you’re saying is you can get the top level of a mastery in a beta weekend? lol
Probably not grindy enough. This is supposed to be end game progression. It’s a time gate.
However, we don’t have all the sources of experience yet in the beta. You did it with the limited experience available.
My guess is if you try to get every mastery right away, it’ll feel like a grind, in the same way that if you try to level to 80 as fast as you possibly can it’ll feel like a grind.
I’ve unlocked a few masteries, and I’m not feeling it, because I’m unlocking them by playing relatively normally.
Every game is pay to win, since you need either a console or a computer, both of which cost money. If you don’t have a device, you can’t play a game.
/thread
Using /thread is always a bid weak. You show that you think you know everything and nobody needs to say everything after your statement what is Hilarius..
But even worse when the statement is as bad as this one.
In the past at least you did try to come with arguments (while usually things as “you can never proof that for sure”) but this..? What happened?
He talked about the game, not the hardware.. But if I would really want to go into that.. he could play for free on a friends PC’s… Of course he still needs to eat to stay alive to be able to play the game.. So yeah your right, every game is P2W :S
If this game is pay to win, then WoW is pay to win. Guild Wars 1 is pay to win, everything is pay to win. It’s a ridiculous statement.
I can’t name an MMO that came out with an expansion that didn’t increase power somehow, somewhere in the game.
In Guild Wars 1, you had classes you could only get if you bought those expansions. You had PvE skills in every game they released. In WoW, every expansion raises the level cap.
I’m joking, because if this isn’t a troll post, it’s not well thought out enough to warrant a serious answer. Any thread that calls an expansion pay to win is trying to change the definition of what pay to win means.
Pay to win refers to cash shop items that give power. That’s all it’s ever referred to. Possibly the only item in the cash shop that was ever remotely pay to win was the clockwork mining pick. That’s it.
Expansions are pay to keep playing. That’s what expansions are.
I know in Guild Wars 1 I was a whole lot more powerful after each expansion.
Two years isn’t way down the line, in a game that’s coming out with an expansion. Two years is pretty much nothing. Way down the line means not a priority, we’re not working on it now, and you won’t see it any time soon. Five years is more like down the line.
It’s super annoying.
What, exactly, is annoying about it. You don’t play on a load screen. You can’t check your inventory. It’s a static picture you’ve probably seen hundreds of times before, if not thousands. I don’t think most people pay any attention to all to loads screens. This is some mental issue people have with advertising, on a screen they’ve stopped looking at months ago.
(edited by Moderator)
It’s still one of the most popular classes in the game.
Prove it.
I’d say you’re making up numbers, because you don’t know the top 20% and can’t prove it’s 20%.
And while you’re at it, provide context that details total hours spent on the character as the amount of newbies rolling a ranger vs the amount of people still playing said ranger 300+ hours later are two very different sets of data.
Ah so eager to try to prove me wrong. I’m not the one using numbers, someone else is. I’m not saying I know, I’m saying the person I’m responding to doesn’t.
If someone comes up to me and says 4 out of 5 people like chrewing gum, I’d say they had no way of knowing that, and I’d be right. I’d ask for evidence. If none is forthcoming I’d say that they were making it up.
I don’t need to provide data to refute someone else’s lack of data. I just have to point it out and let reasonable minds decide if what that person is saying is true.
The top 20% PvE tournaments? lol okay then.
Are you saying that the top 20% of the playerbase appear in those tournaments. Maybe you’re talking about the top 2-3%?
Would you feel more comfortable asking the hundreds of competitive players in the dungeon forums about this? Let’s count the guilds that run rangers for competition? DnT? SC? KING?
This conversation is over. You’ve never heard of what I’m talking about in any of the 3 formats.
So let’s say hundreds of people talk in the dungeon forums and there are a hunded thousand rangers playing the game.
What percentage do you calculate that as. Your issues may be real, but making up numbers isn’t going to help your cause.

Don’t buy or preorder the expansion…it’s not going to change. The six guys that don’t will be replaced by the thousands that do. So this isn’t much of a threat.
Actually starting an MMO late is much harder than being there early on. You not only miss content but you have to deal with inflation without having had the time to build resources.
I don’t know about you but I’ve got a ton of stuff new players never get. By removing barriers to entry, new players come into the game which is actually good for veteran players.
Anet made the right call. If you won’t buy the expansion because of it, the only one who loses out is you.

Some people think they’re entitled to dueling. Just saying.
I’d say you’re making up numbers, because you don’t know the top 20% and can’t prove it’s 20%. And I still maintain there are professions that have as much right to complain that aren’t being played as often as ranger. Why is that less meaningful?
Oh joyousness, I can actually prove it. That’s what this all about. There are regular PvE and PvP tournaments officially held by Arena Net. Do you want me to pull the ranger numbers for the past 12 months? Cuz you will be severely disappointed.
The top 20% PvE tournaments? lol okay then.
Are you saying that the top 20% of the playerbase appear in those tournaments. Maybe you’re talking about the top 2-3%?
Just the daily log in rewards alone is worth the difference in price. How do you expect free accounts to get laurels?
it matters to me
it if count I will grind
If you’re that worried, you should grind it just in case. Because you’re not going to get an answer from a Dev till after the weekend is over most likely.
Agreed. Fluffball is only looking for like-minded individuals. Not a discussion.
How would you contribute an answer to the fact that rangers aren’t used in the top 20% of any given game mode? Keep in mind the original question of “Is this a newbie class that vets are expected to move on from?”
If you can answer that I am very open minded.
I’d say you’re making up numbers, because you don’t know the top 20% and can’t prove it’s 20%. And I still maintain there are professions that have as much right to complain that aren’t being played as often as ranger. Why is that less meaningful?
what event?
any link?
It is a reasonable request.
Why?
Ranger was used in a WTS. It’s viable, but there just isn’t any reason to play on a team atm.
By whom? Oh wait you.
Eura is the officially highest ranked ranger we’ve ever had. I’m here to tell ya’ll it doesn’t work for PvE speed runs and it doesnt get asked to participate in high end WvW.
High end WvW? lol. What exactly is that? Bigger zerg?
Rangers work fine as roamers, and lots of people use them.
As far as I can tell, they didn’t update the bank. The stuff you have in your bank was copied over last time, not this time.
I have about 400 gold more in my main account than I do in my beta account.
@ vayne: yet still you don’t understand that this is not about popularity but about viability in high end gameplay. an ambitious pvp player doesn’t care if 10 billion scrubs like kitten ing around in the open world with their bearbows.
engineer is probably the least popular profession in the game yet i’d rather have one engineer than two rangers on my team.
I understand that I’ve done all the content in this game on a ranger. That’s what I understand.
Given the fact the the ranger is one of the most popular professions I’m not really sure how this matters. That is to say, at least four professions, probably five, are less popular than the ranger.
Did you read the OP? I think Anet views ranger as a newbie class. It has been overwhelmingly and unobjectively rejected by the competitive community in every single game mode. Only in open world PvE does it flourish.
I’m sure all six of you are very sad. It’s still one of the most popular classes in the game. You may see it as a beginner class, but I don’t consider myself a beginner and a ranger is my main. It’s not relevant to me that a small percentage of the playerbase feels it’s not worth it. Anet would better spend their time making less appealing professions more appealing. Far fewer engineers out there than rangers. And necros have a pretty legit reason for grievance as well, particularly in PvE.
