Try Rascal. I had my Engineer wearing the Rascal coat for a while before I went for a heavy steampunk feel. The Rascal coat with the Orr Karma headgear and shoulders might be just what you are looking for. Maybe even the coat from the Temple set would work well.

So my advice is to get the full Orr karma set, and if you don’t like the coat try out Rascal or maybe even Stalwart.

Condition or power? (PvE dungeons?)

For dungeons I use P/P condition build with Elixir Gun and Elixirs. It works nicely.
I’d say that P/P is the build you want to use when you focus on condition damage. Maybe Bombs too. If you go Rifle and Grenades then you’d better go for Power.

My build has been heavily focused on condition damage for a while. I tried using nothing but P/P and go full on Elixirs, but the survivability provided by Elixir Gun made me reconsider and add it back again. My current build is 10/30/0/30/0, and I use Elixir Gun for support and for avoiding enemies, lasting a bit longer. I really love it, not for the damage it has but for the options it gives me. With a single shot I can apply weakness, with the other cripple, and give myself swiftness and then I can poison, move backwards and heal. Those options have saved me many times already.

Another nice thing is that with some simple trait changes (no need to visit the trainer) I can switch to a FT build, stacking Might like crazy and dealing with pesky waves of trash mobs. When doing TA up path I tend to use pretty much only the FT, and it serves me very nicely.

The last time I felt like an engineer was when I started using the Tool Kit, because hitting people with a wrench and using a giant gear to block attacks felt very in theme. However I never really tried to be an engineer. I always aimed for the Alchemist vibe. So, well, if you consider an alchemist an engineer, then last time was yesterday. Using all elixirs and Elixir gun over and over feels really nice for me and this is the first game in which I can be an alchemist and not feel bad for wasting lots of money on potions and being forced to craft them all to be remotely useful.

Favorite Ranger Pet

Vekthor.8914

I only PvE. Level 42 currently.

I tried really hard to use birds, such as Raven and Eagle. I tried because I loved the idea of having birds of prey attack my opponent (I basically created a Ranger for using bird pets and Hunter’s Call skill from Warhorn). However, while soloing, I’ve noticed that they are way too fragile. They are dead in mostly 3 hits. While that wouldn’t be bad if they weren’t attacked all the time, they always seem to pull aggro. So most of the time I have a dead bird on a cooldown.

This made me switch. Now I use 2 bears and boy, what a difference. Sure, their damage is really low, but they are meat walls. They can take a lot of punishing and if they eventually get to 0 hit points, I just switch. As of now I have yet to see a bear reach 0 life and have the other on cooldown.

So my favorite one:
1- Black Bear: Oh yeah tank and gives them Weakness so he tanks for even longer.
2- Polar Bear: Get them Chilled so they never get to me.
3- Arctodus: Bleeding is always good since I use Shortbow most of the time.

I’m sure I’ll value Brown Bear more as soon as I start doing Dungeons.

Beast Mastery is one of the trait lines of the Ranger and it explores the main mechanic of the class, which is pets. So yes, it’s a very viable option. You even have many melee options in the form of sword, dagger, torch, warhorn and greatsword. Axes are mod mid-range, I’d say.

How do you stack might efficiently?

in Engineer

Posted by: Vekthor.8914

Vekthor.8914

The elixirs you use depend on your focus. PvE, PvP, WoW, that all makes a difference. I myself do only PvE, so my elixirs are H (mandatory unless you go the Rune of Altruism route, at least from my opinion), B (I love that one, since it gives Might by itself), U (quickness helps stacking conditions at peak might stacks) and R (sometimes stun means death and the toss skill is awesome in dungeons). But once again, depends on your playstyle. I suggest that you try them all and see how it goes for you.

As for spamming them, I usually use B and U, with toss of H, B and U right before a fight. When they become avaible I cast them again. But I keep H and R in case of emergencies, as I do with toss R.If the fight goes smoothly, I fit these in the spam rotation for extra Might. With Alchemy at 30 and Fast Acting Elixirs, the boons last longer and cooldowns last less, so it’s not that much of an issue.

I’m glad I could help. Letme know if you want any other opinion

How do you stack might efficiently?

in Engineer

Posted by: Vekthor.8914

Vekthor.8914

You aren’t doing anything wrong, actually. However, stacking might is more efficient with a flamethrower build, because with Juggernaut trait you get 7 might stacks just by keeping FT out. With the elixirs (don’t forget to toss them!) you can get a greater amount of stacks.

If you want to take this strategy to the max, you can use 3 of the runes that grant +20% might duration each when you have two of them. This gives +60% might duration in total. With food that also increases duration you can get 25 stacks by yourself.

Now, if you want to offer might for the group, I’ve once read that Rune of Altruism is very good with Medikit. It used to trigger whenever you equiped the kit (baring cooldown). It might be worth a look.

@Vekthor:
I recommend you select the option so when you click an AoE skill, it auto does it where your mouse is

I’m aware. I mentioned it in my post

I tried Grenades and while I can’t deny their Vulnerability stacking is pretty solid, I just can’t get used to being forced to click for each and every attack, everytime, for maximum efficieny. Even with fast AoE targetting option enabled.

Still, every attack requires you to click, even #1. So while it isn’t two clicks, it’s still at least one click and cursor positioning. After a while playing like that I (and my fingers) just got tired.

If I could have a FT P/P build, that would be cool. I have a build set myself, but I am willing to change
(my build: http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mMMM9cz0oLoGMmlCvM0xGG0VkqmRmk8khk7khA7070c7kIQ70V7owY )

The build is good. However, I consider HGH to be essential. Without it you won’t get enough Might stacks.

This is the build I use when I go for Flamethrower: http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mMMzz9Mz0MLovMMlovMax0x0VVRqmkq8khk7khA7070c7kIQ70V7owY

You can take out Elixir R and add Elixir S if you prefer. I just like Elixir R’s toolbelt a lot in Dungeons. Keep in mind that changing some traits makes this build also very viable for P/P. Just switch Juggernaut for Coated Bullets, Fireforged Trigger for Hair Trigger, Precise Sights for Rifled Barrels (or not) and Deadly Mixture for Potent Elixir. And switch the Flamethrower skill for Elixir U (I really like with pistols). That might sound like a lot but it really isn’t. You can do it between fights with no trouble, if you think pistols will do better (such as, say, you need to stay far from the boss).

Engineer Help...

Vekthor.8914

Well, keep in mind you can reset your traits at any time for little silver, so it’s not like your build is set in stone. Your equipment sets are only really relevant when you are level 80.

I used Grenades to level from 70 to 80, and it went smoothly. However, having to click at each attack got tiresome fast. In dungeons, grenades are probably the best you can do for the group in what concerns bosses, because with Grenadier throwing 3 grenades and Steel-Packed Powder (25 points in explosives) together with Precise Sights (Trait V in Firearms) you can get 25 stacks of Vulnerability on bosses, and that makes them go down pretty fast.

Flamethrower is more of a trash cleaning build because of it’s cone AoE, and it can easily be switched for an Elixir Pistols build or Elixir Gun build mid fights, since the points pretty much go in the same place. With HGH and Juggernaut, together with food and runes that increase Might duration (if you want to invest heavily on that), and toss elixirs, you can get some rather impressive stacks of Might by yourself if you keep the flamethrower up. This build also likes very much that Sigils work on kits, since you’ll have 2 of them (because pistols).

I’m currently using a P/P build because I have invested heavily in Condition Damage and Precision in my gear, and this is the build that makes the most out of those two stats for Engineer and fits my playstyle best. Also, switching a few traits for using Flamethrower and burning people to death behind the walls of a keep is a lot of fun when you get bored of PvE.

In the end, it’s more a matter of what you adapt better with. I tried Grenades and while I can’t deny their Vulnerability stacking is pretty solid, I just can’t get used to being forced to click for each and every attack, everytime, for maximum efficieny. Even with fast AoE targetting option enabled. I prefer to drink elixirs like crazy back and forth and shoot a lot of small things at the same time with my Coated Bullets.

If I were forced to shoehorn those two builds, forgetting about playstyle, adaptability and everything, I’d say that the two builds you are in doubt are both good for PvE, but they work better as:
Flamethrower: Farming Events for Karma and Gold, cleaning trash in dungeons.
Grenades: Fighting bosses in dungeons and open world.

This is a generalisation, of course, but serves for showing what these builds excel at.

I hope it helps. If you want any sample build, let us know. I myself would be more apt to help in Flamethrower and P/P builds, but making a Grenade one wouldn’t be that hard either.

Does anyone use pistols?

in Engineer

Posted by: Vekthor.8914

Vekthor.8914

Currently using P/P with full Elixirs and HGH.

It’s not bad, really. With Fast-Acting Elixirs, Elixir U can be used more often and I can dish out some good damage with conditions. Using all Elixirs (H, U, B and R), together with Toss Elixirs I can get some good stacks of Might. I’m using it for PvE, and I can switch easily to a flamethrower build just by switching a few traits between battles.

My old build used Elixir Gun for healing but I have dished it. Now I’m stil debating if it’s worth of a skill slot for the survivability of Acid Bomb. Coated Bullets is godly for killing many enemies (such as in DEs), but that doesn’t mean a trait equivalent to Rifle Mod for the pistol wouldn’t make me a happy panda.

The feeling I get is that we mostly detroy small groups of enemies but don’t have that advantage against single opponents (such as bosses). It could be argued that this is coutnerbalanced by the efficiency of conditions over time, though. So we either pierce all the trash with our pistol bullets, or we get an advantage out of our conditions over time against mobs.

Either way, I’m not having such a bad time. I’m getting downed more usually than I was when I had Elixir Gun, but having Elixir U makes a great difference in DPS. I suggest this build for farming events, too, because hey, you’ll just get loot from pretty much every mob that spawns in the DEs, thanks to Coated Bullets and the Flamethrower if you are into that.

- Apply weapon stats to our kits.

I do believe that applying the weapon stats to our kits without any nerf for “balance” would actually be enough to make the engineer viable as a DPS, ending most of the complaints that the class gets.

Hmm, I have heard this one as well, at least the ‘Apply Weapon stats to our kits.’ part. I’m interested to see how this would change our damage output. Is there any data regarding how MUCH it would increase or decrease the damage of each kits auto-attack?
(I feel the special abilities can be tweaked to bring them in-line if they are too powerful/not powerful enough)

I admit I have no math to back up my claims, just good old intuition.
However, having someone do the math on that would be very helpfull indeed.

an FT build you can WvW and PvE in

in Engineer

Posted by: Vekthor.8914

Vekthor.8914

If I were to focus on a FT build, my main goal would be Might stacking.

So, in other words, Speedy Kits is not great, because you want to stay in FT most of the time. Since you are going heavy in Alchemy, going for HGH is a must. With Juggernaut and HGH, you can get a hell lot of Might stacks. Just use FT kit and 2 other elixirs (I recommend B and R or S), together with Elixir H, and all the toss elixirs from your toolbelt.

I don’t know how usefull it is to go the Tools tree in the Traits, but hey, your call. I’d probably go to Explosives for the Incendiary Powder (V), but maybe you can make better use of Static Discharge if you get up and close with your FT and spam your toss elixirs on the ground next to your enemy. Get Might stacks and discharge bolts of lightning in their face. But I’d suggest you test it first in the Mists.

Last but not least, runes! I’d focus on runes that increase Might duration. You can go 2 Runes of Hoelbrak, 2 Runes of Strenght and 2 Runes of Fire. That’ll give you +60% Might duration. With HGH and Juggernaut, if you spam all your elixirs, you’ll get some really good Might stacks.

Try it out in the Mists for seeing how many stacks you can get and test it in some golems to see how much of a difference that makes.

Hope it helps!

As mentioned, Elementalists are also a solid option.
Bunker Elementalists are quite decent, and you can also focus on full dps and be very efficient too.
The Attunement swapping is the closest thing to kits that I can think about (they are 4 and you can use them all during combat, even though they have a cooldown, different from the kits), and since Elementalist is also ranged (or more focused on close-quarters if you want, with D/D), I think it’d be the closest thing to the Engineer.

Mantra Build: Help and Opinions

in Mesmer

Posted by: Vekthor.8914

Vekthor.8914

Hello everyone. I’m fairly new to the Mesmer class, but I’ve been browsing this forum for some hours searching for decent Mantra builds and uses. From what I’ve found, many consider these builds to be really hard to use and not really worth it, but I want to give them a try.

The plan here is to focus on PvE. I think I should make this clear before anything else. I don’t like PvP, even though I sometimes like to mess with WvW. However, the focus here is killing mobs and doing dungeons.

What I’ve gathered and that got me interested in this kind of build is that you can use your readied mantras while you are casting other ones, and while you are doing pretty much anything else. So my idea is to use the following build, and focus on the strategy I’ll explain after the link:

http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mzmmMc0zMooRLmoogRmxx9Mazcqoaqc

Ok, so my ideal plan is to:
1) Start the battle with all my mantras ready and out of cooldown
2) Quickly cast Mirror Images followed by a Dodge, which will give me 3 Illusions.
3) Compounding Power means I have 9% damage right there. With my 3 ready Mantras and Empowering Mantras, that’s a total of +21% damage.
(Empowered Illusions gives the Illusions themselves +15% damage, but I don’t know if this adds up with the +21% bonus I already have, or if it’s calculated based on that. Anyway, that’s a nice increase.)
5) While my Illusions damage the opponent, unload my Mantra of Pain (3 stacks)
6) Shatter my Illusions with Mind Wrack (
20% besides all other bonuses thanks to Mental Torment) while I recast Mantra of Pain.
7) Rinse and Repeat.

If the situation arrises, make use of Mantra of Resolve, or if I know the fight won’t have much conditions, use Mantra of Distraction while I recast my Mantra of Pain (again).

If things don’t go according to plan, Chaos Storm, then start recasting Mantras. Phase Retreat out of the mess while still casting Mantras, getting the Leap finish from Chaos Storm combo field, with Chaos Armor ready to be cast if needed too. Follow up by Phantasmal Warlock.

Also, my Healing is based on Mantra of Recovery, so I have 3 stacks of healing, which can be recast with the support of Chaos Storm + Phase Retreat, Distortion or Chaos Armor.

If things get too dangerous and I need to recast my Mantras even faster, Time Warp is there to help. if not, drop it for DPS increase for the whole group.

If all scape plans fail, Protected Mantras give me increased armor while I recast my Mantras, which will be happening most of the time anyway.

So basically the idea is to use Mantras but not sit around doing nothing while you cast them. The plan is to use my Illusions as shields while they provide me bonus damage, all the while I move, dodge and use Staff skills to remain as untouched as possible.

Well, that’s it. What I want to know is what more experienced Mesmer players think of this whole strategy/build, if it’s a good plan, if it can be improved and so on. Even if it’s not viable, I’m fine with that, as long as it’s shown to me why, since I think this is a way to make Mantras work well, at least in theory. I know from what I’ve read that this is one very hard build to use, but I’m willing to train with it until I muster it as well as I can.

Sorry for the wall of text and thanks a lot for the attention!

Edit: I don’t know why the post decided to underline a certain part of it, but I couldn’t remove it. Sorry for any inconvenience, was not my intention.
