There won’t be another gear set. Here’s why: see the image below? That’s a CMYK color wheel. ANet starts their gear out with Cyan, moves to Green? Then Yellow, Red (actually a red-orange), Magenta (ascended), and blue (which is actually blue-violet AKA Legendaries). They’ve got both the primary and secondary colors, and now there’s nothing else to add.

..Thus ends this terrible argument that there will be any kind of gear treadmill. You can see from the gap at launch, which was missing magenta, that ascended gear was planned far before launch during the initial colorizing of gearsets.

Oh yeah… and “Our focus right now is making a game type that is easy to watch and understand. That is one of the things we have accomplished so far and we want to keep that concept”.

What. They have not accomplished that, not by a long shot. You’d probably would have an easier time trying to learn ancient Cantonese than whatever the hell is going on in an sPvP fight.

It’s not about breaking down what’s going on. Do you watch NASCAR to keep tabs on who’s doing what at all times? Do you watch football to know every play and what the coach is yelling about? Do you watch Paintball to see who’s got the best gear? No. You watch them because they’re entertaining. That’s the goal of it all.

To put it bluntly, ArenaNet went with a CMYK color scale to base their tiers off of. At launch, we had Cyan, Green, Yellow, Orange, Purple. They were missing one step between orange and purple so they added Magenta tier.

It was never about stats. It was about OCD. Now that we have both the primary and secondary colors of the CMYK color wheel, we’re good. No more tiers.

Well it’s still a huge money sink hole and not worth it.
1. You need to get from 400 to 500 with T6 and their prices are on the rise right now
2. One of the ingredients is gotten by salvaging level 80 exotics and has only a rare chance to drop.
It’s just simply not worth it. I’m tired of time gate and I’m tired of RNG. Why can’t we have karma and dungeon tickets like we used to? Why can’t we get new dungeons to earn ascended items in?

I had this same complaint because I feel like the aim or horizontal progression in the game is creating this lack of content(dungeon) for rewards. I think it would be cool to have a series of missoins where we are sent back in time through FOTM to the crystal desert or the deldrimor dwarves area to receive the crafting mats. But then the WVW players would complain about being forced to do PVE.

kitten right we would! I’m fine spending 5 minutes a day crafting so that I can go back to WvW.

With the advent of WXP, Gate of Madness is seeing a much higher population turnout, and we’re looking to recruit higher AND lower tier guilds with both hardcore attitudes and the drive to build a W3 community from the ground up. I’ve layer the foundation, however it would be in GoM’s best interest to have some more experienced guilds join our ranks with the willingness to teach our PUGs, formerly PvE players, the knowledge and skill requirements to boast rankings.

We value community over all. Gate of Madness may not look it via the rankings, but when we have a commander on the map who knows how to get things done, we GOMINATE. Just know that we welcome anyone willing to come, single-person or guild, to our humble (sometimes) server.

Feel free to mail me in-game or via the forums to discuss transfer costs and building back influence.

Why is Performance Never/Rarely Addressed?

I built my gaming rig using an OC’d Intel 3770k and OC’d EVGA Superclocked GTX 660ti. It is a beast, I get very nice frame rates in Crysis 3 with all settings maxed, but GW2 brings my system to its knees.

That said, it is far easier to say the game engine isn’t very efficient than to actually streamline it. MMORPG game engines tend to be far more complex than game engines designed for FPSs. So I don’t expect much improvement coming to performance any time soon.

On the other hand, Anet actually could have used CryEngine 3 (or CryEngine2) to power their game, and it would’ve looked gorgeous, just absolutely stunning. There was an mmo called “Project D” that was being developed for Japan or Korea (i forget) that used CE3 as a game engine and it was an RPG and had fantasy art style exactly like GW2 but with more detail and richer effects.

A gamer can dream I guess.

Are you talking about Project Divine being funded and developed by Chandler Thomelson? …Because it’s being developed as an isometric Diablo-esque game in UDK.

Will you trolls ever learn to read statements all the way through rather than taking things out of context?

People will ease up on taking it out of context when it stops getting this kind of passionate, emotional reply. It’s very good bait to work people up and fog the issue, distract people from addressing the actual heart of the argument and only focus on details.

It’s a known, accepted, debate topic.

… Pretty sure that whole Manifesto argument was quelled when Vayne told everyone off with multiple sources to official dev interview and statements, even a blog post addressing the manifesto shortly after it was created, before the game was even out.

You don’t, in fact, grind to get to the fun stuff. Ascended gear isn’t fun. It’s a purposeful tier to bridge the gap between the necessity of ascended and legendary gear.

To make the TP flippers richer?

Give trading, so that players can actually trade & make a profit for themselves.

This wasn’t implimented solely because of the effect it has on game economies and the amount of scamming and backstabbing it infuses into the community. Do you want us to be like Runescape?

How would this be OP at all? It’s the same as swapping your stack-gaining weapon for your main weapon after you’ve gotten stacks, except much, much more expensive.

Here’s Ferrum’s Unicorn Build.

  • It’s a condition build. Give it some love and learn it’s ways, and you’ll be invincible.
  • It’s very OP considering the survivability and the massive condition stacks.
  • 20% uptime of stability, regen, aegis, protection, retaliation and vigor.
  • 100% uptime of fury, swiftness and 6-14 stacks of might.

You’re welcome!

Unicorn relevant:

I run a similar build in WvW, with Settler gear instead of Apoth, and the Ascended trinkets that are like Rabid ones, but have vitality instead of full Precision. Build is here:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIIQNAseTjkOJvNPyQMRCEkiroKOFSCVB4I94MGw0A-jEDBodCiIOJjCAgaAjEAi8AJvrIasVWFRjVJjIqWdDzYeIaG0pWIgFrBA-w

Couple of questions though…

- You say you have 20% uptime on a lot of boons, but I don’t see how. I assume you mean from the Lyssa runes on your armor, which will give you 6.5s duration on 48s cooldown. That’s only around 13.5% uptime.

- Are the Lyssa runes and Cleansing Ire your only source of condi removal? Do you feel that’s enough in most encounters? I feel like soldiers runes are almost necessary in WvW meta, or Melandru runes…but Melandru forces you to use lemongrass soup as well, losing your condition duration buff. I feel much more resilient being able to remove a few conditions more frequently than all conditions on a long cooldown. Especially when that cooldown is also attached to our main source of swiftness and boons.

Firstly, I’ve done the math for my boon duration using the formulas the wiki gives and it’s 17.9% uptime due to the engine’s inherent tendencies to round up, which I can easily round up to 20% because the extra 2% is only fractions of a second longer.

Shake it Off is also a condition removal, mind you; I haven’t had any issues in the current meta against condition opponents. You do have to adapt between burst and condition opponents in abusing Cleansing Ire, and it always removes the most important conditions to them. Lyssa runes are fantastic for removing all conditions when a Condi-burst necro thinks that they have you after they’ve wasted everything. After you use your SoR it’s child’s play to kill them.

Jorun, what’s the mindset running your build in WvW? How do you play when in the Zerg, Large Groups, small groups, and running solo. Interested to hear your playstyle in these situations.

  • In zergs I try as much as possible to be a line breaker when in a ZvZ fight, going in and out of the enemy line while spreading as many conditions around as possible. I maintain 20% stability uptime so being knocked around is never a big worry.
  • When defending, I swap to bow and lay down my fire field at the door (or wherever the siege is built/in progress) and proceed to pick off lowbies while searching for the commander to snare my immobilize on. When the zerg starts to spread from my constant upkeep of combustive shot, I’ll jump down and lock the commander in place and fear him into a wall where most times he’ll go down from my bleeds. At that point I’ve been successful and go off to repair any damage taken.
  • Small arms fights is where this build really shines, due to the shout healing and fire combo field for stacking might. I swap to a less offensive roll here, however I do swap back to the offensive when the enemy begins to run, lock them down with pin down and apply some burning, leap to the next foe to apply cripple and shield bash them to let my allies take them down, and leap to the next opponent, using flurry to lock them in place. At that point I can choose to return to a support position or continue chasing.
  • When I solo roam, I really don’t worry about much. I get extremely kitteny with this build maintaining perma-swiftness with the ability to remove all conditions when I run into a zerg. It’s easy for me to take on 1v2, 1v4 and occasionally a 1v6 when there’s a lowbie or two. The choices in these fights are a lot more impacting, deciding between flurry/CS to spread and clear conditions or to save them when you get a small break to let Adrenal Health pick you back up. The longer you let a fight go the higher probability you have of surviving and ultimately winning the fight. I don’t try to immediately burst anyone down with conditions, and I rarely ever flurry due to the root, so it’s a huge game of wits when facing multiple opponents alone. Just today I faced a condition mesmer, banner warrior and a glass thief, all of which made it hugely difficult to make decisions while my enemies were being buffed, I constantly had to clear conditions and I was also getting burst down by the thief. I played it careful and took out their anchor who had little condition removal then moved onto the thief then mesmer. The fight itself lasted 2 and a half minutes.

The build is an active bunker, meaning you can’t stand there and face tank everything you see. You need to be wary of managing your cooldowns and taking opportunities. You can survive for some time behind the line of the enemy zerg, enough to down and finish one or two people, making sure not to fall victim to long immobilizes and stuns when you’re bursting to clear conditions.

Hope I helped in some way.

Fun stuff, also you’re build is near identical to mine, except I run a some Celestial trinkets in there. And I use two water, and four grove runes. Trait setup is identical. Instead of Reduce cooldowns on shouts i get shrug it off for the extra condition removal and stun break as well as another 2k heal shout. And down the crit damage line i grab inspiring shouts so Adrenaline build up is really easy and consistent, and dogged march for some minor regeneration boon and cc slow/chill/ immoblize reduction. The build is also really flexible. Sigils here can be interchanged depending on what you need. For mine I take Superior Sigil of battle so I increase my DPS as time goes on.(I can maintain 17-20+ Might stacks easy). If you need more surviablity you can always go energy sigil for more dodges. need another Dot sigil of doom can work too.

Another thing too is I can change out weapons and a single trait to going to another role. Supporty I can go warhorn. Condi conversion and swiftness+Vigor. If i need some sort of Anti-burst with a bit more CC I can always go shield. If i want more damage stick with dual sword. I have no problem killing anyone aside from FoTM Stunlock warriors. That just ends up a stalemate since no one can kill each other(regen stun and run) The build is pretty much broken in survivability while still having the ability to kill people. The fact that I have a high swiftness uptime, and a lot of immoblizes and cripples means only thieves(some of them) warriors and rangers are able to escape.

Exactly. On paper the build looks like any other run-of-the-mill mediocre build, and you don’t see the true application until you’ve played it yourself. It’s essentially the warrior equivalent to the thief Unicorn build, hence why I named it Ferrum’s Unicorn Build.

Good luck killing anyone with that build. You are practically a Buffer tank with silly damage and apart from sword #2 you have no mobility

So, practically if someone decides to run away there is nothing you can do. Especially against profs with good condition removal.

This build has:
No applied pressure or burst
No Stuns outside shield cd
Very limited mobility.

You should have at least 2 of the above.

I doubt you think condition damage is a viable option as well, since in an average sPvP fight (which doesn’t last long) I deal 44k-60k damage just in bleeds. They remove it? Apply it again. You probably think that hammer/GS zerker is the be-all-end-all as well.. My CC is moderate and fine. I’ve won competition after competition with it, and escaped plenty of zergs with sword 2 and shield 4. I have bleed bursts, which are the moments when I stack 25 stacks on and watch as your health goes down by 1/4 per second.

Yes, it’s a tank build, and it’s also been called “very OP because of the high condition pressure”. I get plenty of kills solo roaming with this build in a fairly short amount of time. It doesn’t have the “instakill” capability of going full zerker, but the survivability and higher sustained damage in conditions makes up for it.

Please, before you critique a build, L2P more than burst.

EDIT: Also, I never have issues with people running away. Cripple on autoattack, sword 2, shield bash, flurry for a long immobilize, and pin down make it hard for someone to get away without shortly downing from bleeding out.

- “I deal 44k-60k damage just in bleeds” – Let us see a video of you doing that.
- i don’t doubt it at all actually, condition damage is very viable but other classes can do it much better than a warrior and most importantly from a distance. (Necro/Thief/Ele/Mesmer)
- No one escapes plenty of zergs with with sword 2 and shield 4. Not unless those zergs are led by cursed shore zombies or bots. The best ways to escape zergs are being a sword/GS warrior, Dagger ele or thief/memer stealthing
- A decent GS warrior, Mesmer, Thief, Ele will be able to kite you indefinitely. You will win against someone who stays and fights inside your Longbow F1, no one else.
- You have no passive healing which is key for meta builds for tanks right now.
- You mention zergs, then sPvP then solo roaming. Condition warrior is horrible for solo roaming because people can run away. In zergs you don’t have the burst to kill someone before your team mates zerg them. In sPvP almost everyone is a bunker.

I could keep going but you get the point. If you do enjoy your build, that’s great but you would need to revise it a little bit.

Adrenal Health is my passive healing. I also have shout heals and healing sure to cleanse conditions when I need to, or charge my adrenal health for prolonged fights. I know my kittening build, and I see that you’re so set in your opinion that nothing will budge you, so I’m not going to waste time on this. Please, stop commenting if you have nothing constructive to say.

I’ll stop wasting my breath.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Guild_Wars

The game isn’t called Guild Wars because it has guilds and they fight each other…

  1. Actually that’s almost certainly why it’s called Guild Wars. Some obscure lore fact could have easily been slapped on afterwards.
  2. What does it matter what the game is called? People expect a sequel to have similar elements they liked.
  1. It’s not at all. The lore fact was the very beginning of GW1 and was a heavily prevalent scene in the tutorial as well as the entire game. You didn’t play GW1 without knowing what The Guild Wars were and how they affected the world around you. GvG was even guided by lore, as it was turned into a sport by the Xaishen who ran the Battle Isles after they saw the affect the The Guild Wars had on the warring nations of Tyria.
  2. No, it doesn’t. However, when GW2 was first announced we were told that it would be a completely different game than GW1 and may not include many elements. We were warned. We understand. You new, entitled players seem to think you have it all figured out and that you deserve GvG because it’s in the name of the game and GW1 had it. GW1 also had HA, RA, 6 PvP modes, Cantha, Elona, Henchmen, Heroes, mountains of skins, more traditional combat, a steep learning curve, and millions of viable build opportunities waiting to be discovered and shift the meta. Does GW2 have any of that? No. Either deal with it like the rest of us or quit.

The game isn’t called Guild Wars because it has guilds and they fight each other…

Yeah we all know that the name of the game is misleading. That has nothing to do with the fact that Guild Halls is a long-awaited favourite feature of many, and GvG is a close second.

Then why continue to beat this dead horse? You’ll either get Guild Halls or you won’t.

Kudzu’s footprints need to be a different shade of green. Right now it looks like a puke green instead of a grassy green.

It most definately looks like baby puke green. I always tease a guildie over the ‘trail’ he leaves.

Would that guildie happen to be named FERRUM??

~Gets that all the kitten time.

Isolationist policies usually result in the opposite, where the isolated nation is left behind by the rest of the world.

False, actually. The U.S. had an isolationist policy up until World War II when we were forced out of seclusion due to the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was the fastest progressing nation in the world both industrially and artistically. Cantha could be the same way, opened up by the rise of Bubbles who guards the Unending Ocean.

I duno about plagiarism as you are not taking credit and trying to cite a source and I doubt that they have an official copywrite on it. Now if they don’t want to share that’s fine for intellectual property and having an advantage over opponents, but if someone does like to share I am interested.

Not even sure where to start the math myself or I would try.

I have been hunting around with the team names as keywords to try and find random posts on the internet and dig through them :p

After some searching, I’ve found this:

http://phiaerith.blogspot.com/2012/09/so-you-are-level-80-but-arent-sure.html?m=1

He doesn’t delve into the optimal chance, but he does however explain how stat optimization works. From there you can utilize the math on the wiki under “Critical Hit” to find your build’s stat optimization. I’ve also found under several Team Paradigm posts that they also utilize the static 42% formula. As I’ve said before, though: 41.9 (42)% is not the be-all-end-all, and you should only utilize it as a goal when trying to achieve a balanced build that utilizes all stats, not just 3, which any min-max build will do.

Since the form is locked and you can’t link us, can you take a screenshot at least and show an idea of what you are getting at?

Or go out of your way to transcribe it to another spreadsheet :p

That would be plagiarism. It’s Team Legacy copywrite, and as I’m no longer a member of Team Legacy I no longer have access to the google docs. I know how it sounds, but I assure you that I’m not bullkittenting you. I’ll see what I can do. Possibly one of the still current (and few) TL members have access to the docs. Shortly after TL left GW2 the council had a fallig out. Anyone who was friends with the council who all left was banned by association, because Freelancer is an ego-driven megalomaniac (ask any former TL member. Despite all that he was still a kitten good leader when he wasn’t gloating). Perhaps I can find the doc in a public format. I know that TL had a habit of sharing their documentation with other hardcore guilds.

Maybe we should look at ascended trinkets and how them being unique affects us… There’s multiple different items with the exact same stats. Them being unique doesn’t mean we have to accomodate different stat combinations what makes you think it’ll be different when the weapons are released?

Well, I don’t think they’ll be unique considering all legendaries will be recieving an offensive infusion slot and many people dual world the same legendaries.

Sorry, some off topic question here …

Where does this 41.9% crit chance optimization point come from? I see nothing particularly interesting about the math that determines resulting damage as a function of crit chance and damage for this value of crit chance.

Back in old Team Legacy days we did a lot of universal stat optimizations. The google docs are security locked so I’m unable to send you a link to the exact math behind it, but it’s a trigonometric function that shows optimal stat distributions. The crit chance line is the most defined point where the “benefits” you get from it become linear after 41.9% when seeking a balanced approach. Mind you, everything in those docs is purely mathematically perfect, not realistically perfect. If you want 70% crit chance, be my guest. At that point though, your build won’t be mathematically “perfect”, or balanced, so to speak.

That’s all a bit cryptic to me.. What I know is that there isn’t an optimal point in the function that relates damage increase to crit chance or damage (the function on GW2Wiki). That’s a very simply increasing function.

I guess when you speak of universal stat optimization, you are talking about a method that determines the best targets for various stats based on the constraints of gear slots and values to achieve a maximum output of something …. damage I assume?

Regardless, are you certain the game mechanics that determine this optimal point for crit chance are still relevant in the game now?

You’re correct in your assumption that the math seeks a “universal” balance between damage and survivability. The math behind it hasn’t changed according to the wiki, and I don’t think they changed anything regarding the stats themselves, only conditions like weakness and how they deal with critical hits. Like I said earlier, the math isn’t your “go-to” for every build. If you’re seeking THE absolute balanced build I suggest you do the math yourself to understand why things work and what best substitutes for what else. Team Legacy and later The Vengeful Blades both used 41.9% as a guideline target for crit chance, because its graph line compared to the others had the most definite drop in benefits at that point. The rest becomes pretty easy to allocate depending on your goal when you have 42% and are seeking a balanced build. If you’re minmaxing, please by all means go all out, because that’s what your build is about. Balanced builds seek to not let anything go to waste, maintaining DPS without sacrificing survivability.

I love how people still run P/D. Try something new, like S/P with runes of perplexity built for high mobility. Stack 25 stacks of confusion within a short duration, letting them waste their CD’s to get out of your multiple stuns, let them chase you. They’ll have to use a movement skill to catch you. At that point, the confusion’s taken 1/4-1/2 of their health and you use Shadow Return to finish the fight, just to let them think they ever had an edge.

It’s always great letting them think they control the fight.
