The grandmaster trait for signets doesn’t improve signet of the Hunt or Signet of renewal at all – wouldn’t it be great if for those skills, you keep the passive upon activation like elementalists can with their signets.
I think this would make ranger signets much more useful – especially signet of renewal, atm most ranger traits are literally never activated.
It’s called signet of the hunt. The passive effect of having it on your skillbar is to make you run 25% faster. This effect stops when you click it – you trade the passive for the active effect which is to give your pets next attack +150% dmg.
i use a very successful build with a frost trap without any of the associated tratis – i try to keep perma-chill on enemies so obviously it’s good for that, and i use sword so leap gives me frost armour which got a nice buff. However i do agree that they should be more viable without associated trat investment so builds could mix and match more. Trap traits especially make them exponentially more useful. Same with some signets come to think of it – stone is fairly awful without 30 in Marksmanship
my doctor advised against me playing this class because of my high-blood pressure and the rage i experience when lick wounds fails to work.
I’d love to hear what he told you about playing the Engineer class .
what? they can interrupt twice in a row when downed and self-rez multiple times with a utility skill faster than you can stomp!
vigor is the buff that gives you increased endurance regen, i think you mean endurance throughout your post. Really like the first idea.
Currently the only rewards seem to be for players who have spent a lot of time playing PvE or PvP – do you plan on introducing skill-based rewards for good players who don’t have time to play all day?
E.g. unique weapons for solo-ing svanir, chieftan, guildlord -type bosses (but tougher obviously).
Or unique titles for good kill/death ratios across matches etc etc.
i don’t think it’s a bug, this is a way to end a dodge early, if you don’t want it to happen you don’t have to swap mid-dodge.
just cos thieves can’t run with the orb doesn’t mean a change is needed – orb carrier is only one role on the new map, orb-carrier-killer is just as important and thieves are bound to be the best at this…
they despawn after some time so you never used to be able to do this, this is now possible because pets have a 1 sec CD outside of combat – rangers can now give allies some pretty useful buffs it seems.
False, this right here points at OP was the reason it got increased from a 1s CD to the full CD out of combat.
Not being funny, but which part is false? :S
sometimes people won’t answer you because they don’t speak english btw – so it might be best to just leave if you’re unsure it only takes another 15 seconds to get a new game.
If someone is a jerk you’re well within your rights to troll them a bit though – I joined one once, asked if it was a duel – no answer, a guy starts attacking me, so i killed him, then he said “leave we are dueling you idiot” XD needless to say I didn’t leave – ever
i was in a 5v5 yesterday where we were celebrating because we beat the 5 guild members on the opposite team and we were all solo-kittens.
So it does happen lol

It was 133 before patch. Compassion training didn’t effect the player heal and it was every 3 seconds pre-patch (or 1 for every 3 ticks of SoW). Haven’t tested since.
Yes it did.
I tested it about a week ago, so either natural healing wasn’t affected by compassion training or it was bugged XD
i always press play now because it tries to place you in a match with other ppl of a similar rank, but when you enter a game – check the score, the game timer and the number of players – it’s usually obvious if people are dueling – i.e. 2-4 players usually, no points capped, players standing around etc etc. If you’re not sure, don’t get involved, just watch the 1v1 and ask in general chat once it’s played out.
Personally i like dueling anyway, so often ask to join, some ppl are glad to have another test dummy.
Rudeness is never justified – i’m sorry you were on the receiving end, but come on, we all do it sometimes – they are probably nice to the first 100 guys but when they just want to test stuff and you’re the 101st guy to interrupt them they’re gonna get irate. It’s Anet’s fault.
what about afk-ers? For the first time today i was actually one of them, I alt-tabbed out of the game whilst waiting and my pc froze so i couldn’t open the game window back up – to the detriment of my guild’s team lol.
I can understand that people solo queing don’t want to join a (probably losing) game in progress, but how about if people above rank 30 pressing “play now” in hotjoins got ported in if someone is afk for more than 30 seconds??
i’d say go condition dmg so you benefit from sun spirit the most, go support so you get boon duration buffs for stone spirit.
Of course if you want to support you’ll have to have spirits unbound.
1v1 they truly aren’t viable unless you don’t get unbound and hide them around a point, maybe then it would work 1v1.
It was 133 before patch. Compassion training didn’t effect the player heal and it was every 3 seconds pre-patch (or 1 for every 3 ticks of SoW). Haven’t tested since.
i like it for thieves – block their burst, knockdown, and stun = bad day for thieves
not to mention the aoe attack you can swing around with wildly when they stealth XD
just searched to see if this topic already existed to report the bug, might as well confirm that it’s not working for me either ^
I really wouldn’t make it known on the forums that you have exploited a bug…
Keep it to yourselves if you have done it or risk getting banned :/
How do you know it’s a bug? Rangers have been crying out for a buff for a long time, maybe this is a step in that direction. I’d like to hear an official response from Arenanet on this.
Never fully tested it, so apparently not infinite buffs huh? 2 minutes is still nice though! i presume you could use the cat (jungle stalker?) to get 25 stacks of might too – might be better than fury for most bunkers, though wouldn’t last as long.
their skill have cooldown when u swap in,no longer the auto reset when swap in like old version
it only appears to be on cooldown, pressing f2 will still cause them to cast the skill
Title says it all, when not in combat pet swap is on a 1 sec cooldown, so get a red moa and a fern hound, cast, swap, cast, swap again – rinse and repeat.
This is likely an unintended consequence so may not be around for long, but maybe it’s intended?
Either way this is probably most useful for bunkers who just sit on points with a lot of time in between engagements – blue moa protection can be stacked too, but takes a very long time, so probably not worth it.
That’s 60% according to the wiki, i know boon duration runes are always being nerfed so maybe it is 50% and the wiki isn’t updated yet. Regardless this does sound like a bug, and a sucky one at that.
I have done quite a bit of testing, but not enough. However my preliminary impression is that builds that rely on pet dmg get hit extremely hard – it only takes one cripple, chill or immobilize and your pet does 0 damage for the duration.
Furthermore, pets are less survivable, so it nerfs the number of builds available to ranger, as you either have to invest full BM to get them to last or forget it altogether, in which case you might as well role another class and do double the damage.
hmmm i wouldn’t risk that, as absurd as the filter is, intentionally circumventing it can’t be good for ya
trait IX in BM has bad synergy with wolf imho as it means feared enemies don’t move as far – so you’ll have a harder time getting people off points etc to cap. But don’t know which canine you’re planning to use.
On your runes 90% of the time i’d say it’s best to go with a full set rather than mixing. In this case i think you’d bennefit more from +100 condition damage than you would from + 15% bleed duration (especially since often conditions don’t tick for their full time before being cleansed) so i’d suggest 5 of the first set and 1 of the second.
Might be worth taking offhand training for the extra swiftness uptime if you wanna be a roamer.
if survivability is your goal – this guy could probably last longer than any other :
2 × 6 second invulnerability
30 health per second from runes
320 health per second from spirit
~220 "" from regen
~62 "" from sig of wild
weakness shout from bear = less damage received
condition removal from spring, bear shout and spirit
protection on dodge, which comes often with 2 sigils of energy
23k health and perma -30% dmg when you’re 5.5k and under
my… heart…. don’t scare me like that! troll thread? what is going on here? can we have vid of it not working?
The only time that SB objectively beats LB is when you spec for Rampager, Carrion, Rabid, Apothecary etc. but then, you can’t complain about a Power weapon being beaten by a Hybrid.
Or if you build for condition damage instead of power/crit
this ^ why would anyone try to draw meaningful comparisons between a condition weapon and a power weapon whilst gearing both with power stats?
5 points in BM is probably always gonna be worth it – especially since you don’t seem to need 30 for signet active effects – unless you use wild active?
do the devs think ranger players just happen to be more prone to complaining than other players?
Just read the patch threads on ele and guard forums, they are the strongest classes, everyone there is happy with the changes. Meanwhile, everyone on ranger forum is p’d off – do the devs think it’s us? Do they think we’re the difference??
i literally got excited reading the patch notes in order – i thought if they buffed guardian spirits which are already viable, they must have done for rangers.
Rangers literally got the least attention of all professions, and i know someone has to, but rangers need the most work imho!
@Wanderer
If you can’t keep the engineer out of their rez circle.
Hide behind your pet to quickness stomp.
Engineer Hook shot will hit the pet, and you will stomp.
It’s a thing every ranger should know when fighting an engineer. Our downed state sucks.
Nice tip, thanks! This is the difference between L2P trolls and peope who actually know how to play ^
I still think the healthbar should increase to reflect the rezzing though, for the sake of other classes lol
omg, still arguing about it ?
HASTE STOMP.
/thread
Sigh – learn to read. Quickness stomping is not an option – using it immediately you get interrupted by the wire. By the time you recover from wire pull, he rezzes before you can execute a quickness stomp. Test it for yourself.
1) Don’t listen to the ranger forums, they’re filled with idiots that despite the sudden surge of people thinking trap ranger is “OP” the class is still utter kitten… Just save yourself the headache and stay far away from there.
2) Do you have points in your BM tree? If so that cat should’ve shredded through his healthbar fast enough that he couldn’t rez, but seeing as how the cat didn’t you probably only have the 5pts in there for the QZ on swap, which makes your pet just a cannonless glass cannon.
3) Seeing as how you are listening to the ranger forums you likely are using a shortbow which means you have immediate access to a large amount of poison, as such you should be using that + going behind the engi for the bleeds and just spamming away, if you’re using Axe + torch you should drop bonefire + shotgunning splitblades into him, followed by the chill (to make sure his 3 doesn’t come up anytime soon) and dps him down that way. If you’re using a Sword + w/e you have another immediate access to poison and could continue to DPS him down that way, if you have an off hand dagger, OH LOOK!! more poison!!
You have endless possibilities to apply poison as a ranger and then proceed to just curb stomp the poor little engies teeth into the back of his throat. And Idk about you, but i personally LOVE the longbow in PvP because dat 4 is really good at getting people off of my points, not to mention 10 vuln, barrage, and rapid fire are all really nice for supporting my pets blood lust.
Where to start..
1. There is some great advice on the ranger forums along with all the rest.
2. Wrong, i have 15 points in BM my cat does the same dps as ppl with 20 points because of 5% dmg buff from 25 NM.
3.Wrong, i’m not using a shortbow.
4. whether you like longbow or not is irrelevant – carrying it should not be a requirement.
As for the new suggestions others have made – quickness – tried that, didn’t work. The wire has no delay before cast, he rezzes before getting it off after being pulled down.
But thanks for the poison tip will try that. So basically i have to make sure i have poison off cooldown when he’s low health – fair enough, though that’s usually when i use it in case he heals back up.
As for knowing when the rez is being used, as i said his health bar wasn’t increasing. Can you see the circle of this rez area? Ppl are talking as if you can, but i was under the impression that only offensive enemy spell area circles were visible. I will however listen for the sound effect in future.
So yeah admittedly somewhat a L2P issue, but i also think his healthbar should increase 20% every tic to reflect the fact that he’s being rezzed that much, not have him suddenly get up from near-death with no visual indication, only a sound effect – i like to listen to podcasts when i play darn it! So also a BUG that needs fixing, i just need to learn to work around the bug, yippee i didn’t do enough of that already playing a ranger.
Some people are telling me to l2p (this happens on every thread so I’m not taking it personally) but I’m getting conflicting info
- Im being told to stomp him with stealth or stability
- I’m being told don’t stomp just dps him
- I’m being told knock him out of the field
First of all I was on my ranger so I don’t have stealth, to have stability I’d pretty much need to choose a certain elite skill on the off chance that I’ll come across an engi – that’s not much of a solution.
As a ranger I was constantly dps-ing him anyway whilst stomping with a cat pet – so v.high dps vs stationary target and that didn’t work. His health wasn’t increasing! he just got up after a few seconds. I never got a stomp off either so this didn’t cause him to res. So either the skill was bugged or his visible downed healthbar was bugged. Either way, not a L2P issue!
As a ranger I have no skills to move a downed player, except possibly longbow 4, and if you ever read the ranger forums you’d know longbow is practically useless in pvp, and even if it wasn’t – again I have to carry a specific weapon now in case I meet an engi?? Not a solution.
So of the 3 pieces of advice, 2 conflict. 1 I did. 1 is likely literally impossible for my class, may be possible with LB but at least not possible in practice. And 1 would work but requires me to choose and use an elite skill for the sole purpose of stomping engis?
I totally agree that engineers need a buff, but that is a separate issue. This gimmick is broken – so stop defending it.
Ok so i’m playing a tournament, 1v1-ing an engi on point which i’m trying to neutralize, i kill him, try to stomp, he pulls me down, i start it up again, he self-rezes.
This was the first time i’d seen this skill so it was a bit of a surprise, but i thought hey, rangers have this skill too, assuming they cast it perfectly a few seconds before they go down, and use up an elite slot to do so.
So i whittle him down again, he goes down, i try a quickness stomp – apparently the pull wire is instantly available so it makes no difference, i’m interrupted then low and behold he gets back up again!!!
This is a 1v1 fight! Is it fair that he’s playing mario and has 3 lives?? that he has 2 do-overs in case he makes mistakes? This is absurd, it must have been like mario for him but i felt like i was playing whack-a-mole! Fix please.
(old man voice) in my day you couldn’t use elite spirits underwater (grumbles)
i really need to find out where patch notes are posted lol
(edited by Wanderer.5471)
If you want to use it whilst running away from a zerg, either turn around (yes you do lose a second, but more than make it back) or if you have a sword there’s a great trick you can use:
Sword 2 – if you have your pursuers targeted, which presumably you do, or can do easily enough, the skill will instantly propel you away from them (180 degree turn is much faster than manually doing so before casting). BUT – after the first roll back of the sword2, hit lightning reflexes, you will now be facing the right direction so will roll even further away from your enemies even faster, then turn around manually and use the leap portion of sword 2! it’s amazing, even ride-the-lightning eles will have trouble catching you doing this!
of course this is situational – i.e. only works if using sword.
btw CD on lightning reflexes can be significantly shortened with the trait, if your build has at least 10 in that tree, it’s probably the best option if you want to run with lightning reflexes.
Underwater Spirits
Casting a spirit underwater and then exiting to land while that spirit is still alive will allow you to keep your ground utility off cooldown.Basically if you casted the protection spirit for example underwater and then exited to land, your utility would be considered unused as long as it isn’t the same spirit linked to that key. This is extremely useful and even works for elites. You can end up having the benefits of the Spirit of renewal and RaO if you stay near the water.
I haven’t tested the reverse situation of casting a spirit on land and then going into water.
For small maps like Raid of Capricorn, this is a pretty good tip.
Great tip about the spirit slots, but the elite spirit can’t be cast underwater can it??
just tested after reading through some of these responses and path of scars applies a bleed on the first hit and the return hit on every target in it’s path and only consumes 1 of the 5 bleeds doing so.
The time between when the random object drops off and when you can use the skill to retrieve it again is 5 to 10 seconds. With the F2 skill cool down reduced due to being traited it’s about 5 seconds. So yes. The time u can have the object is almost infinite. This is all done outside of combat of course.
So you can have it for 15 seconds out of 20 and that’s almost always to you?? and 1/3 of the time you won’t get a stealth item at all so that’s 30/60 seconds that you’ll have a stealth item – literally 50% of the time, definitely nowhere near indefinitely!
Not to mention the fact you have to stop, wait a second for your pig to also stop, cast f2, go over and pick up an object every 20 seconds out of combat on the off chance that you’ll run across someone – fun!
If you’re a lone roamer in wvw the Siamoth is great. On demand stealth is amazing.
No one expects a ranger to stealth, so when one does, it completely throws the other person off their game giving you the advantage.
You can carry the Siamoths random object while running around. So if you spot a lone enemy running towards you, you can run straight at them, use the stealth, and they’ll be completely lost and confused when suddenly you appear already destroying them.
The pig i would only use for the on demand stealth ability. I would switch to my wolf or drakehound whenever actually attacking.
it despawns from your hand after about 20 seconds, so you can’t just carry it around in case you get into an engagement as you describe.
yeah i came across this constant evade thing too – and to the person saying just swim away – what if they’re on a point? they just auto-cap it? there’s a reason invulnerability means you can’t keep a point capped, permanent evade is even more powerful cos they’re doing damage at the same time, It’s absurd.
Pigs are awful in spvp because the enemy can pick up your weapon. The enemy knows you have to go over and pick it up so can drop big aoe skills on top of the item, plus you’re losing seconds of dps or evading by picking it up.
You can’t activate unless the pig is standing still which wont happen often. the two stealth things are too short in duration to be useful defensively, offensively ranger has no high damage attack that would really benefit from a guaranteed crit.
Some of the other buffs are really nice, but since it’s random you often can’t use them to be consistently good. Furthermore, the pigs themselves are quite weak, their only redeeming feature is the knockdown.
Changes they need to be useful:
1. fix bug where they don’t forage on the move
2. item appears in your hand, not on ground
3. cycles through items so you can plan around abilities
4. improve stealth duration by 1 second on siamoth stuff
I think sick em will benefit you more, as you have good investment in BM line, so you get +40% damage on a higher base damage = profit. Sharpening stones is really only for condition builds, judging by traits and weapons i’d assume you’re not into that, though can’t be sure without knowing your gear.
I think Durzlla gave good advice, especially on the knock-back (hadn’t thought of that) but i did a little research and i’d say compassion training isn’t worth it just for the carnivorous appetite synergy as it works out as only an extra 35 health on every crit – so not worth replacing rending attacks imho.
edit: this is just going by the formulas on the wiki, if in practice it works differently, it wouldn’t be the first time
Only reason i suggested the synergy is because he’s using a jaguar who has a high crit chance and his F2 gives him 100% crit chance for ~6 seconds, which can GREATLY increase his staying power seeing as how there’s no CD on Carnivorous Appetite (at least last i checked).
oh i know it would crit a lot, and carnivorous appetite is good, but the scaling you’d get with 350 healing power (compassion training) is an extra 35 health on hit.
i have little experience playing as a trap ranger, but playing against them – for classes with on-demand condition removal, freeze not that big of a deal, whereas it’s harder to remove the multiple conditions – bleeds, cripples, immobilizes etc of spike trap, and if they do, it will have done more damage, whereas a removed frost trap is almost like nothing happened.

As well as golems you can hit, i think it would be cool to have an arrow-shooting machine you can stand in front of to receive damage, and you can program it with additional effects, e.g. burning, bleeding etc, as well as it’s ROF and DMG so you can test defensive as well as offensive abilities.
