this stuff has probs already been said but: pets attack and cast abilities on the move – nothing like running to a point, giving yourself a regen buff on the way-oh wait you weren’t in range of your pet cos he stopped moving a mile back to cast it…
pets can jump up and down stuff to follow you, not run around half a mile and meet up with your corpse, cos you just got caught w/o a pet as a ranger and hence died.
pets dodge when you dodge, in the direction you dodge
shared base stats, then different pets get different + stat modifiers.
I suggest same downedskills for all classes, so it is fair already. Same as i suggest same underwatercombat-skills for all, to make it fair. Just saying.
great idea, we should also have same skills for regular combat that way every scenario is totally balanced
There are various ways a ranger can stealth: Hide in Plain sight, Rune of Inflitration, Smoke combo fields, AoE stealth from another profession (maybe his buddy was stealthed and you missed him?), one of the foraged items (feathers I think)… plus culling
I think there’s also a Norn racial skill that lets you cloak, but I’m not sure about that.
remembered this thread for some reason and thought i’d add that i misspoke before; in world vs world rangers might also be able to stealth from the smoke bombs you can get from environmental weapons bought from npcs unless i’m mistaken? I seem to remember some npc sold them near the sylvari starting zone…
i haven’t tested it, only theory-crafted, but couldn’t the active of sun spirit (5 second blind) help prevent stomps on allies, and even yourself if you click it before going down.
i’ve been theorycrafting a spirit build today and was something i planned to try to use at opportune moments when i finally get around to playtesting it, i’m sure others could confirm or deny this though, can’t see why it wouldn’t work – although the long activation time would likely make it useless against quickness stomps on allies unless you kept a really close eye on health bars and activated it before an ally went down.
Some skills, if activated before you stealth, will continue to fire even when you stealth. This is because these skills are not a chain of single attacks but it is a channeling attack type that isn’t interrupted when the enemy stealthes.
Karka’s missile barrage is an example, the bird attack rangers (or Norn?) use is an example, the wind riders can hit you with their homing beam when they fired before you stealthed, etc.
Breaking target isn’t the issue here because the skill needs a target only when activated – as soon as it starts it just continues.
this is ridiculous, i made a thread the other day complaining that ranger horn attack 4 (birds) don’t work if the target breaks line of sight by running behind a wall etc – the birds attached to his face should still be able to scratch him despite the fact you can’t see him, yet somehow when he’s stealthed so neither you or the birds can see him it still works??? this skill really needs to be looked at…
I don’t play a thief, just wondering how chill effects them vs other classes as they don’t have cooldowns on weapon skills do they? so are they somewhat less effected by chill or does it slow initiative regen or something?
i was talking about regular people attacking you whilst downed, not downed vs downed – as was caffynated as far as i can tell, he gave no indication to the contrary
It was downed vs downed.
The very first line was "So I’m in downed state and kill someone while in down state ". Clearly we were both downed. He healed for 50% in downed state. They removed the healing of vapor form in the last patch, so I was defeated because I used it.
The only thing vapor form does is help you try and LoS so someone else can rez you, or you rez yourself. You can’t finish anyone off anymore. I dislike our downstate.
I recently bought a named set of gear so I can hope to heal like a boss now.
“Ranger pets heal for a pretty ridiculous amount. I’ve seen them outheal two people attacking the downed ranger.”
this is what i was responding to, not your described scenario scenario, please read all the responses in sequence…
id love to know why gw2 doesnt have a system like world of war craft were you can duel somone to see who is better?
So when you have duel between excavators and airplanes, what is the goal, dig up more land, or carry more people? Or who can bake bread quickly.
Your question is answered so many times, just read forum. Or maybe even better, play game and learn something b4 you post.
yes duels don’t actually see who is better. You’d have to be both playing the same class, same build and do a best of 10 to determine that. But that doesn’t mean duels are useless and should never be implemented.
Even right now, i doubt anyone would argue the capture the points game mode is balanced between all classes, but we still have it.
any class can devise a build to kill a bunker (assuming it’s not an ele who just runs away when low) people complain because they don’t want to have to change their build to do so, they want to be able to use the same 3-5 skill combo to insta-kill any player…
it must have been lick wounds? it’s buggy and only works sometimes. On land it can not out-heal even the lowest dps classes, it’s much weaker than revive rate of another plater, but underwater for some reason it can outheal multiple people if they have low dps.
could have been regen from a fern hound too i think? but weird that you percieved it to be a sudden “jump” in health.
thats not true even on land i still can out heal any other down state attacking me
i was talking about regular people attacking you whilst downed, not downed vs downed – as was caffynated as far as i can tell, he gave no indication to the contrary
yeah GS damage is pretty lackluster, but it is AOE and it provides some nice defense too, so it balances out
I’m aware of the mechanic, but had only gone down once previously. Thanks for the feedback, that it’s a known issue – hopefully it’s being worked on but I think because a lot of people assume that it was player error -i.e. downed multiple times – anet might too, and hence why it’s been ignored (/undiscovered in a sense) despite reports.
- a decent duelist in 1v1-3 situations, condition build only
i haven’t played WvW so can’t comment, but play a lot of SPvP and i do extremely well in duels, 1v1-3 situations and i don’t use a condition build. Just Sayin.
Which is what build?
I don’t share my build, not because i think it’s some secret sauce of awesomeness, just that i hate the cookie-cutter culture, and don’t want to see loads of other ppl running it w/o even understanding why it works and putting the work in to experiment like i did. But basically it’s just power, signet, toughness. I’d be happy to duel (not saying i can beat anyone lol) and you can judge whether it’s worth it’s salt
Then stop wasting our time with ridiculous comments like my build is awesome you all have no idea what you are saying -paraphrasing your one liners.
i said, i’m NOT saying it’s some awesome secret-sauce build, just saying trap build isn’t the only viable one. If saying so is wasting your time i don’t know what you want from me? Posting my build isn’t going to prove it, take it from an avid theory-crafter: builds that look great on paper often suck. So the only way to prove it’s viable (and hence not waste your precious time) is to play against it, which i already said i’m more than happy to accommodate.
@Sol, i never finished PvE before getting sucked into sPvP so i don’t have the gear or even the traits to duel in WvW (my toon is lvl 57). I plan to some day though.
it can also be countered with stealth as it needs a target. I’ve often thought it was bugged but upon thinking further usually found an explanation -e.g. stomped by a fellow ranger w/o stability – realised it could have been shared anguish etc, there are so many classes, so many abilities that counter this that it’s impossible to know how on every occasion – many ppl won’t realise themselves with passives, but many good players intentionally activate skills to stomp, the higher the level of play the less likely it is to work.
This is false, it does NOT need a target, if you have no target it defaults to being a daze around you, i’ve hit so many thieves with this while they try to stealth stomp it’s not even funny.
And that’s to be said about just about every downed #2 skill in the game with only a few exceptions.
not saying it is always countered by stealth – but when someone stealths, you can’t know when they’re over you, you might prematurely shoot your lightning so to speak. Also i’m not sure on the aoe radius but i’m pretty sure you can stomp from enough range that an un-targeted thunderclap won’t interrupt – don’t quote me on that though. However, i do know that if two people are stomping from either direction if you target one the other can be out of range – i’ll have to remember to do an un-targeted one in future.
the only way to look for a pvp build without it being a cookie-cutter build is to experiment. if someone gives you a build then by definition it becomes a cookie-cutter build, as you just copied it – cookie-cutter means someone designs it, you copy it… hence the name.
So I just soloed my first champion, to my utter surprise. Just poking around Ebonhawke when “[Group Event] Defeat Escaped Seperatist Leader” popped up. I went to poke it, thinking more people would turn up, and I ended up soloing it.
Level 40, with staff/sword+pistol, up to date weapons/armor, traited for dodge clones and extra phantasm health.
I could never do anything like this on my ranger, which I took to about 60ish, and with that being a medium armor with a pet, I thought it would be more durable. Is this normal for Mesmer and can I expect more of the same at higher levels?
Also questions:
Is staff/sword+pistol a good weapon combo for general openworld PvE?
Which stats would be most beneficial for this?
I don’t shatter much, just drop phantasms and go for the kill, unless it’s a boss or vet and it gives time for my phantasms to come off cooldown, in which case I do shatter before I make new ones. Is this ok or am I ignoring the whole concept of Mesmer?
And does my Sylvari Mesmer ACTUALLY have superpowers? Cos I think shes’s awesome!
i play a ranger and i’ve solo’d many level-appropriate group events, it just takes some time.
it must have been lick wounds? it’s buggy and only works sometimes. On land it can not out-heal even the lowest dps classes, it’s much weaker than revive rate of another plater, but underwater for some reason it can outheal multiple people if they have low dps.

it should be included for no other reason that people want it, and do it anyway – It should just be made easier for them and put somewhere were it doesn’t interfere with regular spvp and regular spvp doesn’t interfere with it.
Borderlands/bl2 are great examples of a good, fun dueling system – and class balance is laughable in that game, doesn’t mean everyone flocks to one class.
The fact of the matter is if you have more than 1 game mode, e.g. point capture and duels or capture the flag etc, you can’t balance for both, there will always be classes better at one or the other. Does this mean you’re happy in having 1 pvp mode forever? i’m not, i’m already tiring of it, i know spectators will if they ever genuinely hope to have an e-sports scene.
some great suggestions, these sort of stats would be a big incentive for actually playing well rather than getting the highest score. So many times in a team game i start capping an enemy point and 2 or more of my team run on half way through and stand there, so i just leave knowing my presence does nothing to help the team, and they have higher scores. I think there should also be more flavour text like “xxx is conquering”, as this makes the player feel appreciated, i got “xx is a combat medic” or something the other day and was chuffed because i hadn’t seen it before, it made me feel appreciated/recognized. There should be tons of these.
i’ve been playing ranger from day 1, and i advise you to experiment, there is more than 1 powerful pvp build… not many more mind you. Anyway, i think it’s funny that you wanted to pick an underdog class of sorts but people on the forums seem to be saying they are one of the strongest duelists now, so it might not be the best choice if you don’t want people to be on you for class imbalance XD I suggest rolling an engi, i dont know if they just have a high skill ceiling but i’ve played hundreds of hours of pvp and never had trouble with one
Let me be clear this isn’t an issue of how to play against a bunker or any given spec/class. My “main” and or class I’ve spent the most time with is a necro, I’m perfectly familiar with condi damage and boon stripping.
My point is the current state of PvP is pretty poor, and isn’t fun. I can’t stress it enough, this is not simply a power level issue but one of negative game play. I thought they wanted this to be an esport but who is going to want to watch a super boring battle of attrition against the multitude of tank specs.
There is no risk playing a bunker spec and no incentive to play glass DPS (the latter usually requiring the most twitch/skill in games).
more like the latter usually requiring you use a set sequence of 3-5 skills with bunkers requiring consistently good play and resource management…

yeah dagger offhand is great for the ranged cripple, because chasing ppl down with GS is no fun. If your leap is off CD they will get away, if not you might fair better but gd players can dodge before stun follow-up, then you’re back to square one assuming your target is faster. The cripple on 4 is atrocious, the combination of you having to stop in place to throw it, the activation time and the slow projectile speed means any moving target will be out of range by the time it gets to them anyway.
topic says it all. Important notes: i was playing a ranger, i had recently been revived from downed state by an ally, after moving away and continuing to fight. the death breakdown screen pops up, i close it to see i am indeed dead on the floor. Frustrating for myself and the teammate who sacrificed a lot of health to revive me, only to have me magically drop dead anyway.
I can only imagine someone was channeling a stomp and the game still thought i was in downed state for some reason??
with 25 mastery points spent in BM ive seen Jaguar do 9k dmg to a Warrior with frienzy. From my experience in BM builds i know that birds do a little more “clear” number than cats but cats i think they do more dmg overall.Birds hit hard with the F2 and autohits and i think is possibly to reach 9k numbers with some buffs. It would be like 4,5k 4,5k since it attacks twice
Yes I agree with you on cats versus birds-note that Warrior takes 50% more damage in frenzy so that would have been 4.5K damage (still a lot!).
I am wondering if anyone can clearly lay out how to acheieve this “easily doable” 9k burst though?
I mean we all know that pets can do a lot of damage, and that under some conditions can do more- but when I run a BM type build pets seem to do around 2K damage, with some hits for a bit less some for more. That is far, far away from 9K.
What am I doing wrong?
9k vs a target that takes 50% more damage means the jaguar hit for 6k, not 4.5k. Since the bird does two attacks, this same build could likely achieve a hit for 9k if used with a bird.
I wouldn’t say you were doing anything wrong, my pets do similar damage, these are one-off crits probably with gear for max crit damage, there is a trait for it, and i’d assume activating signet of wild before f2.
Yeah melee ranger can be very viable, i used to run a GS and sword signet build (lots of different off hands, most are v.good, dagger is probs best) is Spvp and would consistently win 1v1s vs warriors etc, the great thing is that they try to get you in melee range, thinking a ranger is weak there, so they do half the work lol. So yeah it’s viable, my advice is experiment with different setups. Pets will be around 30-50% of your damage.

i doubt they nerfed it to this state, because it just doesn’t seem that powerful. The damage is medicore, and while it can’t be reflected like a projectile or removed like a condition or interrupted it can still be dodged (two dodges = practically 0 damage) and you can still use invulnerability. Most importantly, as others have stated, the guardian has a similar skill that functions the same way but requires no maintained LoS, and nobody has found it to be particularly OP as far as i know.
As for speccing for power and crit so you can do 4k dmg then hide behind a wall in WvW, many classes can already do one-shot attacks that do that much damage or more, where there’s no opportunity to evade most of the damage etc….
I do very well on my latest ranger build in sPvP, i am often the top player in the game, rarely die, win 95% of 1v1s no joke (now and again i’m burst down if not paying attention etc). Afterwards i’ve had multiple instances of people whispering me saying “omg you’re a good ranger, what is your build?” etc – usually from eles and guardians etc who don’t expect to lose to a lowly ranger i guess XD
i think the trait that increases longbow range should do the same for ranged pets, as if i find a good spot to snipe someone at 1200 range i believe it is? spiders and devourers just sit there adding nothing to my dps… huge design flaw considering my own dps is lowered because the devs expect the pet to be contributing…
I really think you should be able to stow your pet and get stat increases to bring you in-line with a solo class… it could be on a long cd to prevent people using it to burst (maybe even unchangeable in combat come to think of it).
the only smoke combo fields ranger can create are underwater though. he could at most be stealthing every 20 seconds, on his own, and that’s assuming he’s lucky as it’s not a sure thing (2/3 chance) that he gets a stealth item from forage too. But in a fight it could be much more with the rune and hide in plain sight, but i think both are on a long cd so if he stealthed more than 5 times in a row he must be cheating. as for the multiple knockdowns, it can’t happen. i can interrupt 4 times on a good day: lightning, switch to wolf which leaps, wolf fear, lightning is off cd, but as you can see that is only one knockdown…
Good on you for beating them even once when they were cheating, they should be embarrassed.
ok so i call down some bids to peck an enemy to death, he runs behind a wall and “obstructed”… This is ridiculous, the wall is coming between myself and the enemy, not the enemy’s face and the talons of the birds, it should have no effect.
I understand logic isn’t the only relevant factor is such games, but it’s not like it would be somehow overpowered, it’s no different from throwing torch skill 4 at the enemy, if they run around a corner are the flames “obstructed”? obviously not. In short why does it behave like a projectile rather than a condition? either this should be changed or the animation should be. Perhaps it could have you throwing birds at the enemy…
i play a ranger and wanted to use axe mh, axe oh but i realised you can’t use two of the same axe in spvp unless you keep one in your bag.
Therefore, i think for dual wield-able weapons like axes and daggers you should be able to deposit two in the pvp locker.
yeah i noticed this earlier, so glad to have found this thread. i switched them in and out, but i might have forgotten after a few matches, or maybe they just switch off randomly, but i lost in a 1v1 battle which almost never happens :P and i noticed in the last few seconds that my signet wasn’t ticking! I have literally had to stop playing the ranger signet build i use, and that’s the only class i play atm, so for me this is game-breaking.
I can see your point Redfeather about stealth in this game, being pretty unskilled and not stealth at all, perhaps such skills should be split into stealth and invisibility, with stealth being something you can keep up for much longer but which you have to use intelligently (and can’t just pop in the middle of battle) being mindful of positioning and movement etc, as NinjaEd suggests
i find this, as well as dodging, finishing people is almost impossible, you just end up slashing them on the ground for ages which at best looks like you’re being a jerk or at worst makes it so you can’t finish before more enemies arrive etc. I didn’t know you could pres escape to stop the animation though, i’ll have to try that.
the trail idea thing is great, the skill could be a channeled skill so you can see the thief trail whilst channeling but have to stop to attack/swipe where you saw the trail end a second ago. The trail could be revealed to your pet too, so it could attack as you channel, but allies can’t shouldn’t be able to see it, as i think that would be OP, and would require rangers in groups to have this skill.
been using the jaguar skill in pvp recently, i find it to be quite powerful, of course it would be even better if you gained stealth too though. However i liked the idea of being able to stay stationary and stealthed for a long time. But i totally disagree that every profession has enough skills, especially since some have far more than others already, and some are fairly useless etc.
Did search suggestions for a similar topic, found nothing. I’ve only leveled my character to 40 but am really enjoying ranger in PvE and PvP, I almost always choose nature-based classes in such games. The only complaint i have is that that thematically speaking i think rangers are missing a key element of what makes their archetype cool – a stealth skill (the one available through traits skill can only be used defensively and so doesn’t fit the silent stalker theme).
Obviously it should have a different flavour to currently available stealth skills for other classes. I think there was such a ranger stealth skill in the beta if memory servers, i seem to remember it was removed for balance issues.
Anyway one specific idea i had is “signet of the stalker”- passive = you and your pet gain stealth when you drop below 20% health [defensive similar to trait]. But also active = you gain 3 seconds of stealth, but timer only ticks down whilst moving, whilst stationary you can remain stealthed indefinitely, attacking breaks stealth. [more offensive use in-keeping with patient hunter motif].
I think the beta skill allowed stationary stealth to be indefinite and if ti was judged to be OP, maybe some revision is needed – e.g. it lasts 30 seconds whilst still or 3 seconds of movement? or cannot use if another ranger is stealthed within a range of 1200? [justification = not enough cover available] to stop group stealth ganking? Because of the cover thing, you could also have it so that activating the skill within 1200 of an enemy stealthed ranger would oust him from stealth instead of stealthing yourself [justification – awkward moment as you accidentally uncover them whilst looking for a good hiding spot XD].
Wow that turned out long, any thoughts, comments, suggestions?
