At least ask for a reasonable ratio change between damage and defense. A plain “I need +500 on that stat” just increases power creep.
What, does tag disappear when you stealth? I don’t see how being a thief would be a problem.
because the way commanders are played, they just go in the melee with cac. They serve as a rally point, aoe damages and heal target too. Do that with a thief and you are pretty much dead meat.
I suppose this play-style comes from a compromise between simplicity and effectiveness even with people not on team speak.
But nothing restrain you to use the flag system from squad to target objectives, ask for heal, etc… I’ve never seen a commander use it even once. that would be the best way to play a thief commander.
He just runs straight, the one at 4.23.
ETA: In case this was a joke: There are actually mobs who technically can dodge: GS warrior mobs, e.g.. Question is if the 3/4 timeframe was legitimately long enough to evade my CnD every time or if it was my messed up CnD. I guess the latter.
Anyway: This video was taken after it seems to have been fixed and is just to demonstrate my playstyle, because I don’t think that I have been the only one who had this.
But none of you believed me, the guy I took that video with didn’t believe me.. so I had no real intention to frustrate myself with recording more videos to prove something no one believed me anyway even if it was plain to see = I had given up. And I bet the answers will be “I play just like you and never had any problems” and would’ve been also if I had footage in which I miss every CnD. No offense but I know the players in this game ; )
Only thing I can find is that your sense of distance could be different than others or your timing gained subtle changes over time. Maybe you are used to a timing which is at the very border of the hit box, you get it right most of the time but a terrain irregularity or any other thing gets you slightly off.

Camera doesn’t matter, it’s only pve.
Then watch it when you’re at home and can’t sleep :P
Watching this video it feels like you got dodged by a risen. Nothing broken, you just turned on the left while he got on the right.
We had “get rid of 5 man premade” not so long ago. I wonder what will happen when we will get rid of duo queue. Next thread will be “Solo queue = breaks matchmaking”
I would just get rid of the passive that procs at 50% hp and do something else with the trait. In fact I would do that to all 50% hp proc. It doesn’t encourage a healthy play.
I would gladly sacrifice PI for that to happen.
In that case use targetting, map ping and drawing and hope it works
2k games for me. Around gold 1 to silver 3 on thief and alt mesmer.
I have some interesting games, some terrible. When I lack concentration on my thief I switch to my mesmer which is a non meta AOE damage build. Goal is simple, play the teamfighter role I can’t do with a thief. That’s how I came back from lose streaks.
I find this season quite acceptable, the meta has not changed much from last season. There will always be people you find are terrible on every division. But it depends of a lot of parameters : team composition, people’s understanding of rotation, etc….
Also ive seen a lot of eles that suddenly leave the teamfight and +1 close or far
STOP. DOING. THAT!
Whoever reads this: learn the role of your class before you play it….ty
True, I see a lot of them doing this as well….I don’t know where that comes from.
Funny how thief is allowed to use an elite to stomp (as well as other professions use stab, stealth, cc’s etc.) But Mesmers aren’t. (Timewarp)
This is what ANet calls ‘balance’.
What the hell are you talking about ? don’t you have distortion on demand to safe stomp ? It’s more broken than impact strike, which is a telegraphed 3 parts stomp. Impact strike can be interrupted, blinded, countered by stealth, launch, pull. Tell me how you counter a distortion stomp except fast rez ?
If it was just a big free for all arena though, what is to stop people from jumping in and trolling people’s duels?
Kindness. First step to reform pvp’s negativity ^^
That was an interesting read to page 6
Here is a few things I would like to point :
- Why jump right to nerf thread before a “How to avoid interrupt and PI proc from a thief ?” thread. An educative, community friendly thread ? Anyone out there ?
- Have you ever seen a thief vs thief duel ? It’s all about who can predict the action of the other. Yes stowing/not attacking is one of those actions. I don’t know why other classes can’t imagine doing that mind work as well.
- Getting a good interrupt with a thief means reading the animations, learning the other class mechanics. Shouldn’t that work be rewarded ? Punishing a necro spamming AA on scepter is a side effect. d/p thief is more or less not allowed to AA in a team fight because of AOE spam and squishiness. Is it a bad design to have an inverse mirror situation for other classes ?
- Is killing an ele after 4 well timed interrupts balanced or a good design ? That’s open to discussion…
I’m not against modifying PI. But it also means thief needs other counter plays to passive invuln / pulsing stab and 4 sec blocks. I feel like boon stripping rending shade from shadow art was an attempt to do that. Unfortunately, SA traitline is not worth considering in the current state of pvp.
^ This.
I got two loss streaks on my thief that got me from gold to silver in a pretty depressing way. The fastest way to recover for me was to go chrono greatsword + gravity well and no portal play. Just burst during a x2 gravity well ( 6 sec CC ) in team fight. That’s the best brute forcing way out of silver.
Maybe they will change it in the next balance patch.
Lately, their politic on thief was to tune it bit by bit. We got pistol main-hand(AA damages ?? and CS trait) and dagger offhand (bouncing dagger). They could follow with a CnD tuning….
Or nerf PI
That’s why I suggested a free for all arena. It makes people able to do several 1v1 in the arena and allow people to watch as well. the devs don’t spend too much time on it. And people can yell at each other freely.
I believe an arena like this would be able to resolve HoTM problem: people that block each other but fights in the map chat with “You are a kitten, I could kill you 1v1 easy”. And provide a good laugh for others.
1v1 duels are fun and all, but not really worthy of having it’s own queue. It’s just a little something to do to kill time or brush up on skills. Personally I feel the methods currently available for dueling are adequate, but it would be fun to have some sort of public dueling arena in HotM.
Actually that could be easy, put a interactive statue that change your allegiance in HoTM ( just like the anomalies thing or the mursaat armor ) or just put a free for all guild hall arena in HoTM.
I have gotten lots of points in matches that I had my dead corpse carried by team players, and have lost lots of points in matches that we’ve lost despite my exceptional performance. A player’s climb or descend in the ladder doesn’t seem to be based on your performance.
Exactly. The current system is seriously kitten braindead.
I can’t believe no one at Anet realized the simple way to make this work and reward players for playing well: make loss/gain of points dependent on your own individual performance, NOT that of the team.
Otherwise, we get the kinds of experiences reported here and elsewhere. I just can’t believe Anet thought it would be a good idea to have your rating depend on a random assortment of teammates AND to not allow you to form full teams to counteract this.
It should be either full team formation capabilities and current ranking system. Or no teams and ranking dependent on individual performance only.
At this stage I don’t care about my rank because of this. I just want enough ascended glory shards to get those ascended gear. Any idea of a way to compare myself in PvP to others is irrelevant now to me.
The current system to rate personal performance is not enough to accurately rank people. Most flagrant is the +1 role. You can make decisive actions but still have no top stats. top kill being the easiest to achieve. Beeing there at the right time just gives you average score.
The window for a kill is quite small in the first team fight. Even being in a team fight is dangerous for a thief. You didn’t mention the map, but depending on the node it can be a nightmare to engage.
If I judge I can’t get a second downed / kill in the next 5 sec I go decap far. In best case that gives our team the opportunity ( delay the respawn guy + win mid ), in average case secure equal score even if our team lose. In the worst case, we are whipped and a few points behind but their team is spread out.
When I started playing thief someone told me I needed at least a thousand game to “master” the profession…Two thousand games later, I can say I’m not a beginner anymore but I’m far from mastering all the in and outs of the role.
The easy answer to thief role is “decap and +1” but the reality is very different. Playing thief is pretty much the same thing as beeing able to make your every moves / decisions worth it. And capitalize on it. Sometimes I manage to do it, sometimes not. Sometimes it’s because of the team, sometimes it’s because I made kitten decisions…
One shares his piece of information and gets bashed for it.
This community is really toxic.nice way to distort the situation boi
guy boasts reaching a meaningless rank with a meaningless build, is explained that build is still bad and that rank can be achieved with pretty much any build whatsoever
“gee gee toxic community”
Actually, there is two ways to see this. You can stay humble ( and nice ? ) and recognize that for each person their level and don’t kitten on everyone.A comment like “Glad for you, I’m in division **** and I don’t think p/d will be efficient upper gold 3, keep going and see for yourself” for example. Or you can just be a kitten and answer like people did.
(edited by Wargameur.6950)
It’s nice to now people can have fun with other builds on thief
I’m having fun with p/p at the moment. It’s nice to have a breather from current d/p build. It makes you look at part of game mechanics you overlooked before because the playstyle is similar (thief role I mean) and yet different.
I’m on an azerty keyboard:
a → strafe left
z → forward
e → strafe right
1,2,3,4,5 → as usual
mouse wheel, utility #1
mouse extra button 1 → utility #2
mouse extra button 2 → utility #3
F → heal skill
R → elite skill
C → dodge
V → stow
Tab → select next enemy
I find shift uncomfortable so I use alt + 1,2,3,4 for f1,f2,f3,f4 and alt+x for f5 ( Kitten mesmer’s shatters…)
Urgh….kitten you kitten forum, I had made a great answer and now it’s all gone….
If you are using Chrome, look into Lazarus. Saved many a post for me.
No way I will believe in a Mursaat named browser extention !
Hahah yeah, Mesmer with proper portal use has great map control and can turn games around quickly. I was going to suggest that to
It’s even more simple than that, my build on mesmer is no brain ( or at least it has become for me ), it is played a bit like a thief in a way that you should avoid taking damages.
- advantages :
1) The AOE burst is insane and can wipe an entire team or at least waste all their stun break.
The combo is : gravity well -> continuum split ( on gravity well aftercast ) -> well of pain -> greatsword #2 – 3 – 4 -> shatter #1 -> dodge -> shatter #2
and do it again, if both gravity wells get in it’s 6 sec of CC ! It works well on necro in the first team fight.
2) Great against DH to disable their trap with clones
3) On demand stability and blind, extremely useful if you count the number of people that don’t secure stomps….
- drawbacks : weak to condi and a small frame of vulnerability
Urgh….kitten you kitten forum, I had made a great answer and now it’s all gone….
In short, thief is a class of momentum, the “+1 and decap” role is just the upper layer of our true role which is to create a virtual 5v4 situation with two things :
- always having someone in the other team dead
- pinning down a enemy at their home by constant decap
With those two things, you build up momentum for your team. If you fail to do it, your team is in the 4v5 situation. Of course every class can do this thing, but this is the default role ( and only one ) for a thief. So playing this class implicitly means you are able to create this momentum.
With two thieves, the only thing you can do is to make sure your roles don’t overlaps, so one d/p and one staff is better ( or p/p if no ele, engi around )
Ahaha I got a phase like this as well on my thief, those 9 defeat in a row are terrible….The only thing to do is stop playing for a while or change classes. Thief is that hellish class that brings you to the bottom if you are not focused on your role and only this….
My solution was to get my mesmer and play a build I was confident would crush team fights. I’m almost back to my original position. Since I want to play thief again, I’m started not considering leaderboard, just enjoyed playing my thief. I played 4 games on him and won 4 of them tonight
I don’t understand, I have seen countless posts on here about how PvP does not get good enough rewards. How the rest of the game gets better gold and rewards, and how PvP players can’t afford and can’t get the materials they need to even make ascended armor.
So during seasons, they offer a chance at almost a full set of Ascended armor. I am lost as to why people would not be happy that finally PvP rewards are getting looked at.
Thank Goodness for Ascended rewards! They are NOT over the top they are appropriate.
I have around ~2k games in PvP. In PvE I’m mostly doing the story and most difficult PvE content would be HoT metas, never raided, my fractal level is around 25, and I got into WvW last september. So I would say I’m a pvp player.
In the last 2 years I got a full ascended armor thanks to ascended boxes from bags of pvp reward track. Yes it was rare and I’m not against unlocking ascended stuff in pvp. But I think there is a problem when I can get 3 ascended armor pieces or trinket in less than a week.
The problem is that 3-4 ascended pieces now have less worth than a mini lavish Llama of the wings of ascension. It got me more time to get those two items in previous seasons than to 4 ascended pieces. Don’t you think that ascended armor would have meaning if you would get them through the season instead of right at the beginning ?
absolutely not we finally have good pvp rewards you still make more in pve… but our rewards now make pvers uncomfortable..
I’m fine about the gold amount / transmutation charges and tickets but ascended gear is a bit too easy to get at the moment…
Maybe it’s intentional to have fast reward tracks as the true reward is the leaderboard for pvpers.
As a pvp player I’m quite happy to get ascended gear, since the only ascended gear I got was from rares pvp boxes ( I got my main full ascended armor like this in 2 years of time ). But I have to agree that the league reward track is too fast paced. I mean, we are 1 week after the beginning and most people should be at the byzantine chest already….I got at least 3 ascended pieces in a week ( 68 games so far ).
I would be ok with it if we had 3-4 élite specialization. This would be the spec you switch from time to time to get a refreshing experience.
Maybe it would have a place in raids since the large HP pool of bosses allows the frequency of the buffs to be steady.
just use the new converter to make loot bags. It seems you have too much to lack them when unlocking ascended gear. Or you can use them in stronghold hero skins ! I think they where introduced as a glory shard sink
You have a new backpack from the Wintersday reward track, which is pvp only, you can equip it only in pvp and there is no stat selection on it.
That answer is a bit of a troll but there really is a backpack like that :p
Maybe one day we will have a UI option to display the grid for pathing, who knows….
Imagine if shield stance or endure pain didn’t activate cuz: “game says so”.
Ahahah that made my day ^^
Did anyone tried the new runes with P/D and was successful ?
I tried p/d deadshot in unranked but didn’t in ranked. I’m not enough confident with the build. I had interesting duels with warriors and thieves.
Secondary note : I just discovered recently that you could jump + #3 to apply tourment without beeing teleported back. It’s much more easy to land torment with that trick ! I got up to 12-13 stacks.
I think it’s ok now, yes the traps are punishing as they should be but the removal of daze allow a split second of reaction to avoid them which is pretty nice !
Out of 7 matches so far, 4 of them had double thief on my team but none on enemy’s. What gives, Anet? You refuse to bring thief on same level as other classes because thief is roamer but stack thieves 24/7 on same team.
I think we tend to remark thief stacking more because :
1°) We play the same class
2°) Thief stacking hurts more than stacking from other classes
In my case: On 4 ranked games played 3 had 2-4 thieves in the game ( me included ) today. I won’t draw a conclusion. But I suppose I didn’t played enough games to draw a conclusion.
I can understand your point number 2 and 3. But could you explain your point number 1 ?
How is that hurting you for them to have those 42 AP points ? What if some of those people are point completist and have, through sweat and hardship, got into the top 250 ? Do you have the right to remove those points for them just because they have better skills than you do ?
The ingame leaderboard is really nice as well ! seeing top players ratings is motivating !
I just don’t understand the difference between the 2nd and 3rd % of the stats. The thing about team and team vs enemy.
I’m hype to see what people will find to blame the system and tell themselves that they are better than the rank written on the screen ^^
I suppose all thieves are used to condis by now……
Let’s be happy, now that MMR is displayed people will be able to vent their anger and justify it with a number ^^
I never had so much extreme insults…most I had is “I’m the dumbest thief ever” or “plz uninstal the game” I suppose it’s because all my answers to them was game oriented and more or less on point regarding the game we had…But I suppose people all react differently to insults. I don’t really care as they insults you based on 15min of which you barely talk with them.
As for the backstabs guys you just ned to tell them " I know right ? did you see how it wreaked you ? it’s so OP" and they feel like you agree with them…or they just block you !
Try this build:
You play it just like d/p but with condi. I find it extremely fun to play and drop people like flies because they don’t expect a condi burst so big..
I’m happy to see that build here ^^ I made a similar build and had a lot of fun with it I would just say that you sigil and venom can draw attention that something is wrong about you.
I don’t mind that you think it’s bad ^^
I don’t know if players get unkillable or if it removes the ability to tank with those changes? I got two opinions with Buran and OriOri but without exemples….
I think a build that down you in 1-2 sec is a bad design and shouldn’t be possible.
@Emdrix : I’m more or less against perma boons….I would go for a 1 or 2 sec of super speed but with the range of the dodge reduced. That should be a good compromise.
RNGesus comeith.
It’s a big reduction of damages but still invite people to pay attention to what is going on on both sides. It’s different than full invulnerability in a huge way : it forces the blocking guy to not go gung ho but still provide a relative safety.
Edit : It also reduce self reliance and promote support builds
(edited by Wargameur.6950)
I recommand you to make a guild with the purpose of creating team based matches. Create your community around it, try to maintain it with at least 250 regulars player.
Then show Anet that the player base is here and that you can make regular matches happen. Then maybe team based queue will be a developer focus again.
There are only advantages to this solution :
- you get to know people that share the same mindset as you
- you are able to play team based matches
- you have the nice feeling to have accomplished something
Hey guys,
I just wanted to make a nerf list thatcrossed my mind but will most likely never happen .
General nerf:
- Tone down all damages by 10 % ( power and condi )
- All invulnerabilities are replaced by a 75% chance to evade an attack
- All blocks with a duration of more than 2s have a 75% chance to block an attack
- All traits that procs at 25% hp are removed from all traitlines
Professions nerf:
Thief :
- Remove swiftness on unhindered combatant
- Add a 0.25 sec cooldown on head shots
- remove a dodge to daredevil
Warrior:
- Stances can only be activated one at a time
Engi:
- Kits skills are disabled for 0.25 sec when equipped
Mesmer:
- Disable all shatters for 0.25 once a shatter has been used
Necro:
- Shrink the shroud pool by 10%
Guardian:
- Remove the 20% cooldown reduction on traps from piercing light
Ranger Rev & Ele:
- No great idea for those guys
If you have your own over the top general nerf list go for it ! The only rule is to nerf your main class first !
Why do I feel like, after playing just a few months, I have seen almost everything about the Thief at least PvP wise? D/P has been meta for quite a while some time now. That’s all I see to be honest, from time to times, I see staff Thieves (Min Scherzo style) coming, but that’s about it… oh yeah and ebola thieves.
I definitely don’t master the profession, but the monotony is starting to kill me. I wonder if others agree with me. I m gonna force myself to learn S/D for the sake of changing things around, but something is truly missing here, and I cannot point it out.
It’s pretty much true for all professions in ranked. I don’t find it monotone since my focus on thief is more on map awareness, trying to make the good rotation decisions and focussing the good target.
I’m far to be as good at it as I want to be….Changing classes from times to times is fine as well.
On a complete random note : I just learned that you could jump + debilitating arc to keep the evade frame without rolling backward. Isn’t it awesome ? if you are not amazed, I can’t do much for you….
Well, I suppose you are going for power D/D, which explain your need to relearn kitting and attack. D/D is pretty much a condi set applying loads of bleed ( I know you power d/d believers are out there in the shadow :p ). Anyway, for leveling just try every sets, play around with one, try power and condi variants then switch weapons. You will meet different playstyles and find the one you like the most.
As for harder HP best way to do them is to get someone to do them together. It doesn’t matter who activate the HP, even one attack when the boos is at 1% hp is enough to get the point.
Actually, wanting to craft Incinerator is what got me into WvW seriously.
I wanted to profit from the occasion to get memories of battle through reward track. So I joined a guild got into TS. I got the memories, more or less put incinerator on stand by. But I’m having a lot of fun with my guild.
