Go close to kill them so ur necro can rotate to mid and win the mid fight instead, the druid full caps far by the time u killed close and he prolly goes mid so u can decap straight after. Then go mid and outnumber cus respawn prolly goes their close and fullcaps

Just with the classes, I would make the same choice as you did. I go mid, then you have two scenarios :

- You can either burst the engi to force elixir proc, and you get your team in a confortable 3v1 situation for 4-5 sec. This is a bit tricky to pull off, basically you have to burst him very quickly in a short window.

- You can pressure the necro just interrupting him without entering the fight and size the good opportunity.

I suppose you could also start the mid fight with poison field and blast to apply weakness and limit the enemy ability to make damages.

The thing is, you need to consider the health of your allies and how long they have been in a fight. It gives you clues on the state of the fights.

For example you know that if your dh has been full health for a long time, his blocks and invuln are probably down leaving him vulnerable.

Basically, the bottom line of what you’re saying is: “Your team doesn’t matter. You should be able to individually win a game.” It’s complete BS, no team gets carried to a victory. Everyone has to contribute, unless you’re paired with a pro-level duo.

I agree with Fay, especially on thief.

See it that way : when you play with a thief, your team is basically fighting in a losing situation, a 4v5, but there is a bazooka running around the map. That bazooka is you, you have the ability to transform an honourable sword duel into a one sided slaughter. Your team’s ability is greatly enhanced by using the bazooka since the strain of a duel becomes a walk in a park.

As a thief you really have that possibility to carry, but even a +1 that is more than 10 sec is a mistake.

I started like you at gold 1. I got your kind of loss streak 2-3 times during the season. I did a break and climbed back up each time.

I suppose it’s too bad you learned the rule today : Never insist to at least win a game in a lose streak, have a break before the 4th loss ^^

Thief is one of those classes that can easily become useless if you are not concentrated enough. And it’s really easy to go downhill with it.

I placed gold 1 at the beginning of the season and got to the bottom of silver 2 three or four times. I got back to gold using a custom mesmer build with AOE damages. The ability to carry with high dps and aoe in low leagues is just better than playing thief.

That said you clearly are not a regular pvper…I would say average pvpers are at least regulars. I asked a while ago how much games does it takes for players to reach their minimal deviation ( equivalent to accurate rating ), Evan answered that it was around 43 games ( -/+ 10 ).

I’m gold 2 and I played 213 games so far with a win rate above 50%…I thought I would be playing at least 50 more but I had exams. I suppose that’s a profile that fits average a bit more than yours.

You should play at least play 100 games and see if there is a difference during the next season…Your current level of dedication to pvp belongs indeed to bronze level.

I don’t know what is the tone of my post, but it’s not supposed to be offensive in any way. Except maybe that your screenshot taken in AB and not HoTM makes you even less of a regular pvper

Need help with build for WvW

I’m playing full zerk with marauder amulet rings and earings I’m around ~13k hp and I’m doing fine. I like that setup because it forces me to play with a small margin for error.

I’m extra vigilant of my surroundings. Lot of people in WvW are not. I’m a pvp player that started enjoying wvw not too long ago but have a lot of fun. Main roles I do are duels and snipping people around big fights.

the stream got a spike at 2k views and an average of ~1k7-1k8 person watching on Helseth’s channel.

It was advertised on the forum, on reddit and in HoTM. So it wouldn’t be wrong to assume we have at least 2k regular pvp players.

Percentages don’t add up.

I couldn’t find it on the wiki but I suppose you put skill modifiers on top of rune modifiers. If your weapon has a power of 100 you would have :

eagle
100 + 6% = 106 damages
Executioner
106 + 20% = 127.6 damages

but also at the builds they are using
you can have a big difference in your mmr depending on which kind of build you are using on one class

That’s just impossible to do in practice…How do you know which player is good with which build ? And against which composition.

I’m sure I do pretty well against a team of 2 DH with a p/p thief. But p/p is not viable against most compositions….

If you track every single build ( traits / sigils / weapons / runes / amulet ) with MMR, it’s not manageable….

So….regarding matchmaking/teams… There’s multiple people posting threads on pvp teams in ranked.. yet you guys address everything but that. Can you at least acknowledge that a lot of your player base is upset about this?!?!

It has been addressed already. They recognized there was some flaws in matchmaking and they would change some things during s6.

Evan, I think you said our rating would reflect our skill around ~200 games ( If it’s wrong tell me ). Do you know when the majority of the population reached that threshold ? I mean, in a perfect world, everyone would place themselves in the first quarter of the season then enjoy the game at their level of skill for the rest of the season.

Also, as far as diversity goes, league has about 130 or so champs and realistically only <40 are played. Top and jungle are more or less the same thing every game (you’re either a tank or you’re fiora in the top lane and the jungle is either lee sin, Elise, reksai, or khazix). Mid lane has a slightly better pool now that azir is dead and ADC (as weak as the role is) always had the most diversity because all of the champs did more or less the same thing with a slightly different twist.

Overwatch isnt much better either. On release, you have McRee flash fanning tanks from 100-0, Genji with his instant kill animation cancel combo, hero stacking double Winstons and lucios. One of the best widowmakers in the world complaining about 40m queue timers and the devs eventually finding out over half of the players in that widow’s region have the player on their avoid list because they got their kitten kicked and would not like to experience that again. Now? We have the triple tank meta, God76 eradicating any fool dumb enough to challenge him from outside of a Reinhardt shield and the entire defense class is STILL horrible past plat+.

As far as I can tell, the issue with GW2 is the fact that combat is incredibly unfriendly to watch. Too many passive procs and traits interacting with traits interacting with traits that all happen under the hood in the middle of a combo that is done in a split second. Theres no way to cast any kind of play by play that the viewers will enjoy or even understand that way. Every hero has a minimum of 10 weapon skills and 5 other healing, utility, and elite skills. Theres no way for a person without an extensive knowledge of the game could even begin to digest what the hell is happening in a team fight.

Take, for example, league. Most champs have 4 abilities and 2 summoner spells. Anything else they use will be an item active. All these champions also have keystone masteries. I’d mention runes as well, but they’re just stats and pros usually run whatever it is they want to run in an effort to accomplish their role so its usually easier to ignore them and watch the people play. Ultimates have longer cooldowns and do tons of crazy things. You can generally tell how dangerous something is based off of the animation alone and you’ll usuay be right. Did that Medusa looking woman (Cassiopeia) turn someone into stone after not doing so for a while? Must be an ultimate and we’re about to see a big play. Did the tiny, annoying as all hell midget just unleash a giant golden hammer knocking half the enemy team away? Must be an ultimate. Did the blind monk just dash to you like he’s BEEN doing for the last 15 minutes? Normal ability.

I find LoL as horrible to watch as GW2, understanding a teamfight in LoL without the pause button is kitten hard. If you look at the groucharoo tourney, the commentary were focused on rotations and where to +1 and assist teammates. That was great and the perspective was one step higher than how he used skill #1 then skill #2. Of course it’s great to see mechanical play. But it’s not what conquest is about

Afaik if you reflect something with AA #3 AND if the reflected projectile it you will go back to AA #1 and Staff #3 doesn’t reset the AA chain only if it doesn’t hit.

The main point of creating distance between you and your target is to entice him to use ranged skills : a rifle warrior will rifle #5 or headbut you if you stay at melee but he is more likely to just gunflame or volley you if you stay “away”.

You are wrong on skill #3 I just tested it on golems in HoTM. Only the jumped version of skill #3 reset the AA chain on hit.

Some classes works better on core than others.

I think necro and guard have the most viable non HoT builds. I suppose you can use that mantra greatsword mesmer as well. Engi and War I don’t know….Ele has fresh air but it’s not great. As for thief, it’s pretty much mendatory except for condi d/d.

I used to use such micromanagement on Ranger’s Greatsword autoattack all the time for an extension to the evade frames. X) Figured Thief’s reflection could be used the same way, but have not made good use of it just yet. :P

It’s hard right ? only thing I could think of was AA #part 1 → AA part #2 → dodge → AA part #3 ( without touching anything ) → AA part #3 on the enemy and repeat.

I don"t get the balance yet between this chain and skill #3. I don’t know if we could do something like :

AA #part 1 → AA part #2 → skill #3 (without jump) → AA part #3 ( without touching anything ) → dodge in → AA part #3 on the enemy and repeat

The Irony of GW2 PvP Toxicity

If you’ve ever had both the fortune and misfortune of reading this forum, reddit, map chat, or any other venue where players occasionally express their views on the collective actions of other players, you’ve probably seen some complaints. Those attempting to capture the amount of malice some players can express toward others summarize the GW2 player community as a toxic community, and they’re actually onto something. However, this complaint itself is also incredibly ironic.

Complaints do have value but not all complaints. What separates a good complaint from a bad one is whether the complaint offers a better alternative to the idea it’s tearing down. For example, telling a player he or she is bad because they’re leaving nodes to outnumber fights on a bunker build does little or nothing. Telling a player why it’s generally unhelpful to outnumber as a bunker, on the other hand, has potential to be helpful. What makes GW2 toxic are the complaints without substance – the complaints which don’t also offer what the person receiving the complaint can interpret as an agreeable suggestion.

The irony of GW2 is our complaints about toxicity are also failing to include substance. When we complain about elitism, people being sheep to the meta builds, or the abusive tone of how players typically express their frustration, we’re being just as bad as the people we’re criticizing. We’re being just as bad because we’re making the same mistaken when also failing to offer better alternatives. Ironically, we’re contributing to the toxicity of GW2 with how we often respond to the toxicity of GW2.

So. What’s the alternative?

Simply put, provide criticism with a suggestion that you believe will lead to improvements. Additionally, attempt to make this suggestion in a way that conveys not just what you believe but also communicates it in a way the person receiving it will be more inclined to take seriously.

What does that look like in practice? Unfortunately, this isn’t inherently simple – it depends on the person. How this process can start, however, is simple. Rather than call someone out, start be asking, “Hey [player name], are you curious about something you can do to win more often?” We might still be toxic. This toxicity may also be ironically contributed to by some of those criticize it through how they criticize it. Nevertheless, you can standout amidst all this nonsense through demonstrating some simple respect.

You know what ? most of the time people just vent their anger and then blocks you so you can’t even answer…

Micro-managing AA is honestly one of your best skills to have against ranged classes. It’s also good for learning how to stick and keep pressure on kiting foes; As you AA, you may need to dodge quickly in an emergency, but you can still continue raw sustained dps after dodging if you know how to manage it.

I’m working on staff after looking at some video because I feel I have overlooked the weapon for a very long time.

I knew some people use the staff AA part #3 as a timed projectile reflect so I made some tests.

- You have a bit more than 2 dodges of times between AA part.
- During that time you can dodge without resetting the AA chain.
- Any skill that land reset the AA chain.
- For some reason Debilitating arc don’t reset the AA chain. It means you can make a combo like that. AA part #1 -> AA part #2 -> debilitating arc -> AA part #3.
- Even more strange, the jumped version of Debilitating arc reset the AA chain. I suppose it’s because there is no more dodge animation associated with the skill even if the evade frame is here.
- Any AA part that doesn’t touch a target can be executed twice before the AA chain reset.

- You can queue up to one skill during vault

S/P is also intriguing especially in light of the changes in PvP. While I do not PvP I hope to see those translate over into WvW.

Your build in essence a hybrid and s/p has some distinct advantages. Pistol whip hits hard and is a series of attacks that can apply all your venoms at once along with an interrupt. This should be saferr then the AA chain as you get an evade and stun.

The 1.5 second Immob can be useful here ensuring the enemy has to break that Immob in order to dodge out. You give up poison but get higher weakness uptime with the two sources and a cripple.

You have the advantage of a long port in much like d/p , with the bonus of a port out of danger without switiching to SB much like p/d has with this also cleansing a condition.

So you could load up venoms and port in via infiltrators, use PW and port back out and still have that steal there. While hard to give up BT if pressure strike taken here you could also apply torment via the PW and or headshot interrupts.

With panic strike, infiltrators immob and that off the daggers you are sure to be able to get some of those PWs off for a combo of power damage and rapid condition stacking.

I tried an hybrid s/p condi build too with impact disruption, immob venom and spider venom. It’s fun but I feel d/p offers more for a +1 role.

I am just curious as to why this the case?

5 and 6 obviously the same. S/d with changes has a superior port as it goes in and out with cleanse. PW is a stun and evade along with one of the highest damage sources we have and in addition to that immob it is a source of weakness which I am a fond of if you can source it multiple times.

If I look at 2 through 5 , with changes I see it as a wash if not an edge to s/p.

Is it simply the AA and backstab chains?

I would say the reactivity of d/p and the fact that you are allowed to do offensive defense with #3, if that makes sense. And pistol whip is tricky, it feels less smooth to use than even CnD or sword #3 from mesmer. You see I prefer a highly reactive build than respond to urgent need than rooted high damages.

the combo would be venom -> steal -> AA until no venom left -> weapon swap to shortbow -> disabling shot ( venom apply ) -> chocking gas

I think something like this might be possible but I suppose there is better suggestion out there.

Further to your build specifically, I am not sure on your rune choice. While understanding you have some bleeds coming off the SB (and swap to the same)you will not use them a lot so are not getting a lot from that added duration. There no consistent bleed app so bleed durations do not help a lot.

I would go for runes that add to generic durations , such as Nightmare/trapper or that target poison such as thorns. Adventurer mght be another option as this would assure you get full endurance at every heal as well as add to both power and condition.

Compared to current choice I think this beats 15 percent poison duration.

I will test that I’m not really good with rune choice ^^ that’s why I post on the forum.

1. I’m on thief, my fun is in getting timings of dodges & interrupts right and getting a good understanding of the rotation.

2. I’m playing to see my ranking compared to my guild mates and people I know. I don’t care about legendary backpack. Ascended stuff is a nice cherry on the cake.

3. I can’t tell about that, I ’m good enough to stay in gold.

5. Is non-meta mesmer allowed ? As long as you know your niche and limitation non meta can be fine. You are not forced to stick with one build/class forever. Some builds can fit a comp better than meta.

Is that only me or the matches are much better now that the season is about to end ?

I had the same feeling during the previous seasons but not as strong as that.
I started gold 1 and had a lot of ups and downs ( always between silver 1 and gold 1 ). IMO I belong to gold 3 ( ~ 10 wins away ) so not a big ego here.

I’m playing thief and I feel like I can do my job smoothly. All of a sudden, people have innate rotations and communications skill. They don’t rage when we lose and even more amazing, we manage to cool our head and regroup when we are losing.

It’s a bit sad that it doesn’t happen earlier in the season. Matches were definitely more interesting this past few days.

What is the difference between 4 and 5 ? 4 is basically a 1v1 on all node and someone rotating to kill.

I don’t mean to be rude but your proposition reminds me of people that say " My team sucks, I’m better than all, wanna 1v1 ? ".

I don’t see how it will affect match making, you will get 3 bad players instead of 1 ? That means you have less chance to have a good player balance a moron in a team ^^ We already got solo/duo queue, following your logic in a few year gw2 pvp will be a RPG.

If you are interested in GW history, Alliance vs Alliance battles were the ancestors of conquest. It was a 12 vs 12 battle to 500 points with 7 caps . Conquest is already the exact application of what you propose, which is reducing the number of people on that game mode.

Those games crushing kurzicks and their " 12 – 0 – 0 " strategy are one of the best memory I have from GW1 ^^

I would say practise, breather and knowledge are the 3 things you need to get better.

- Practise, because you will understand better some situations as you encounter them. It allows you to identify your weakness and where you are doing good. First hand experience also gives you a sense of timing, you will get used to the timing of vulnerability of your enemy.

- Breather : Playing always the same class and mechanics in pvp can be stressful, even more when you don’t do very well. As a main thief (dagger/pistol) I’m sometimes tired of looking out for +1, be extra careful during team fight and no condi access. I play my mesmer during those moments (aoe, nice survavibility,etc.). It allows you to see another perspective of the game that is useful once you get back to your main.

- Knowledge : I would say join an official class forum guild. In my case joining [Teef] was really nice, I got to know a lot of thieves that were better than me and always ready to give pointers. You can easily find people to train with, explain you why this sigil is better than this one and so on. I didn’t stay long in [OMFG] but the official mesmer forum guild have nice people, you should give it a try.

Claiming that top players can beat Maygi with x build is a moot argument. I agree that there are builds that can stall d/d condi evade but beating it when played properly? Nada.

I can twist it around and tell you to 1v1 Kronos on a node when he’s using d/d condi evade. You’ll never win regardless what you use.

Killing them is not about build, it’s about getting a daze / stun / grab / pull at the end of dodges. But as stated before you are better doing something else than fighting a d/d thief

How do we kill condi mesmers?

If you need to heal, use your signet of agility to get full endurance if not already the case, and you get a condi clear on top of that, to get full heal.

Can you explain this a bit? Are you saying the signet provides heal through some trait or something? Because I know of no such ability, so I must have either misunderstood or you may have meant something else. Only thing I can think of is that you meant to say to use the heal skill after condi cleanse to then get “full heal”, right?

And thanks for the advice… I generally find mesmers not a problem whatsoever as thief (mainly D/P) but it’s a good reminder to run Improvisation more often for that crazy stolen item that I love to get from mes. So juicy.

The point is that channeled vigor gives you back endurance instead of health if it’s not full. Using the signet means your endurance is full, providing the extra heal from channeled vigor. wiki

“Decent spot” may not be the most accessible spot.

What has always been the case, and still seems to be, is that there’s a large gap between god-like and trash tier. Average/decent, is rarely to be found.

Hum…I think you are wrong on this one. If you only consider a game, I agree with you, the thief job is either well done or butchered / rendered useless there is no middle ground. But you still find thieves on all level. There are matches you are able to make +1 work, others not.

I don’t know how you can clear all conditions and kill all clones =) Just can’t imagine. Only possible way to kill me as a thief is: one “disable” attack with some autoattacks, i use F4, then run away, wait, use venom and attack me again. Or pray to a.net gods for lucky critical hits. In another way staff thieves are more hopeless, because they can’t reduce the distance fast enough.

I don’t know which game mode you play but in pvp you basically play on a point and your clones are quite packed. It’s really easy to kill them with one or two vaults.

When I play staff I use dash, I don’t think you can out run a dash thief on mesmer no matter your game mode. phase retreat + blink is basically the same range as dash + shadow step.

With d/p to avoid hitting the mesmer shield is really important, he can’t cast it again which mean 1 or 2 phantasms less and an important skill on a long cooldown. You need to watch for both signets and interrupt them if you can ( at least dodge the moa )

I’ve already stated why I think this is false. To repeat, someone using an optimal build will have an easier time learning the basics without having to worry that their failures are due to their build (which is often the case if you aren’t experienced enough to use non meta setups). If you succeed at using non meta, then that’s awesome, but don’t think that you succeeded due to your build. You succeeded because you used it proficiently.

I’m halfway ok with what you say. It’s true having the meta build to learn the basics is great and efficient but people need to try playing other builds. It helps constructing your play style faster.

I will give you an example with thief:

you start learning with the meta build and you get used to burst your target on +1 with steal. The damages are good enough to not really worry on the timing to engage at a beginner level. If you practise at the same time a set like s/d, you will learn to be more of a bruiser. s/d is all about going in and out of fights at the right time and observe the opponent. In the end the s/d experience is good for d/p thief because you acquired that knowledge to wait for the good opportunity to engage at higher level.

I suppose it’s easier to describe situations you try to create because you are comfortable with handling them.

I’m far from a pro player but I know +1 on a DH are confortable. They are pretty vulnerable once they get 50% hp and I just need to watch out for their leap heal. Aside from that they fall pretty fast and allow me to go somewhere else pretty quickly.

I suppose there are such situation for all classes and build

ranked is based on seasons :

- We are in season 6 and we got access to in game leaderboard and solo/duo queue only.
- Your first 10 ranked games are placement games that determine your level (+ your results from previous seasons)
- There is a ranked reward track that gives you shards of glory + pvp currency ( I don’t remember the name ), with those you can buy ascended armors & weapons ( 4-5 pieces with the whole reward track ).
- You can go for a legendary backpiece. You need 4 sets of wings ( traded with league tickets ) and a bunch of gifts.

Pvp is still a part of the game where you have independent stats and fixed level. So you just need to get a build a rune and an amulet ( the helmet at the top of your screen ).

Sometimes it’s just impossible to do your intended role as a thief, because of your teammates.

Few games ago I was going +1 on close to make it 2v1. Our mesmer starts screaming at me to go decap far. I finish the +1 at close (in our favour and we get close back). Decide to make a run for far – but wait, mesmer decided to go contest far, and dies to druid and DH. Enemy Druid decides to camp at far – I see this and ignore far for now. Mesmer goes far again, dies almost instantly- he probably didn’t anticipate DH just left him some trap bombs under the druid.
Our team asks him why he is dying at far again – he replies – COZ IM DOING THIEF JOB. THIEF GO PVE FARM MUSSELS OR SOMETHING.

Because the pigeon-holed view of thief in some players minds are so obscured, they think when the thief is not on far – he isn’t doing his job – and then they decide they should be doing it. Sometimes there is good reason not to be on far – and while the mesmer above decides to go and try to cap a point with an enemy on it (and dies in the process) – our team is missing out on the great pressure he (condi mesmer) could have applied in team fights. Players like him make our ‘thief jobs’ so much more difficult.

Ahahah I get those sometimes. Once I was on skyhammer, at the beginning I went for close. A thief and a rev went for me. Of course I couldn’t hold a close point 1v2 so I rushed far to decap it. My team obviously won the mid fight 4v2 and then yelled at me “WTF is our thief doing fighting in the middle of the map”….sigh

I think those comments come from people that don’t have any map awareness unless they have nothing else to do. They have no idea what the situation is but still think they are in the right.
