Is class stacking really that bad ?
Role stacking can be a problem but class stacking ? In a normal situation class = role. But in a class stacking situation you just need to change build or re-roll.
Is it really that overbearing to not have a skin ? or to not have achievement points in an area ?
It seems like the end of the world if you can’t have those….
I would almost propose to be able to sell legendaries backpacks to the TP, but there is already so much shiny skins out there….
It’s not really a mind game but I find it really fun those days : you go for the decap of the far node using shadow step, then you decap looking at the enemy coming back and shadowstep back just next to him and go mid. After doing that 2-3 times, the guy sometimes stay far for the rest of the game ^^
I also like to decap a point that has a portal, forcing the mesmer to teleport back then temporize for the portal to disappear. And going back mid leaving the mesmer behind.
Edit: I forgot the most important of all ! Watching an Engi trying to flee in Elixir form ( that tiny little punk ) stay next to him and wait for the moment he pops out to kill him ^^ It’s all about the mind duel to anticipate his dodge out of the elixir and bursting at the right timing.

If you don’t consider the player skill, then a skillful build can only be based on combos or skill rotations. In that regard the most skillful are builds with harder combos to obtain. For example a combo field and a blast is ridiculously easy to do with a short-bow. On d/p the action to go in stealth for a long time require more mastery.
But the thief is more of a “reaction” class, you won’t have a skill rotation like an ele, an engi or a mesmer.
Being a reaction class doesn’t mean we don’t have rotations. It just means our rotations vary more depending on the situation and what the opponent is doing – i.e our rotations are reactionary.
For example, D/P dash thieves have similar rotations when fighting several classes, such as dh, necro, and warrior by bobbing in and out of melee range with dash and shadowshot. The rotation is essentially shadowshot, AA 1-2 times, then dodging headbutt, the point-blank condis from entering death shroud, etc. A rotation against an ele commonly involves waiting for them to use their earth overload before using steal.
We don’t have a skill rotation like some other classes, but there’s definitely patterns to how skilled thieves fight certain classes. These patterns can be defined as rotations.
I agree on the “how skilled thieves fight certain classes” but it is a behavioural pattern. What you describe here can be described as followed : gap closer ( with optionnal blind ) → damages → dodge incoming damages → interrupt incoming damages.
You can pretty much fit any weapon set in this :
- shortbow : infiltrator’s arrow → cluster bomb → Disabling shot → steal
- S/D : infiltrator strike → AA → flanking strike →infiltrator returns → steal
You can’t compare that with a test of faith → spear → pull → shield push from a DH or an instant 15 stacks of burn engi ( sry I don’t know the combo, I don’t have an engi )
The closer to that on a thief might be the ghost thief build or a black powder → bound → steal → backstab combo. which is quite easy to do.

I don’t know if it the build with the most dammage, but it is the less boring I made. You get large amount of boons and easy clone generation. The well is nice to pull foes for heavy spike and and shatter break bars. You will have a bit of a pain agains condis but against AI and clones its ok.
you can switch staff with sword/shield if you want.
The one with over 200 ping rate and 50 packet loss. Most unforgivable build in my opinion.
It requires the skill to see the future…and beyond
You can also stack more than 30 stacks of poison with thief guild + ambush + spider venom + poison field ( shortbow )
It’s a gimmick as well, but I was exploring those double shortbow builds
we just want 3 points.
and thats pretty much what skyhammer is now.You mean YOU just want 3 points. Because I don’t remember electing you PVP community spokesperson.
I certainly enjoy different twists to the game and am bored to tears with the “just 3 points” maps.
Ahaha, that made me laugh. but +1 on this.
That’s interesting, I might give it a try tonight. Necro is not my main but I didn’t thought about those traits/rune/sigil combinaison.
I always go for the bloodmagic trait line for a power necro, it might be because of a lingering memory from gw1….
It’s a really nice initiative. More devs should do the same.
Buy 4 computers, and 4 HoT editions. Log in with 4 characters you control and do the hp.
You kill the boss with 4 character you control ALONE. I think 4 p/p thieves with venom share and thief guild is the best. That’s 12 people with no scaling.
you are happy, Anet is happy (thanks to your generous donation ), everyone is happy !
" There are matches where your teammates seem to be evaporating at the slightest contact with the enemy, any resistance that you put up gets +2’d in short order because the rest of the team is ressing and they can afford to fight 3v1 on anyone who is putting up a fight, and it stopped actually being fun a hundred points ago.
If you’re not having fun, and it’s clear that there’s no chance of winning, why try to prolong your own suffering? Games are supposed to be fun, after all.
That said, it takes more than the first fight to decide that, and if you are having fun, you might as well keep going. After all, upsets happen, and if it’s not as bad as the above scenario, it might well be something you can figure out a way to turn around. The nature of the game is that a small difference in efficiency can translate into a large difference in the rate of point acquisition, so what appears to be a large difference can be countered by a change in tactics that gives you the edge to turn the snowball around.
Have you ever had that situation where you lose really badly and something happens, your team is suddently doing pretty well ? The enemy needs less than 100 points before the victory and you stagnate around 100 but you manage to end up with a 500-350 loss in the end. This is the sort of moment you can see what was wrong in your rotation and what made things change.
I feel like some people are really confident in their skills to afk because “this is lost and I’m playing for the pips anyway”. You know what ? I would be ok with afk people if they had a real discussion and analysis while doing so. Most of the time, you just have a guy giving up with no reasons or insults.
I don’t know, maybe my mindset comes from me playing a thief before the league system and during every seasons.
(edited by Wargameur.6950)
I that even a question to ask yourself ?
I really hate people that think about afk for a game. Do you seriously only play when you win ? I mean you have pve for that.
asking yourself if you should afk is absolutly not the right mindset….
I suppose, warrior might be the closest from the classes you already play…Or necro, but necro is a bit boring in pve. I don’t play warrior, but I think it is the least passive class, with no weird gameplay attached to it (sry ele and engi I just can’t come to truly love you )
Either they go into the nightmare of balancing all traits to make elite specs on par with core. Or they release more elite specs not bundled to extension packs…..
I voted no and I’m a solo queue player.
We all had game where we got wrecked, even by pug team. I don’t really see how guilds and premade are a problem. Maybe it’s because I’m only an early diamond, that’s why I would get no more than 5% of full premade….It might be a problem on legend…
This is just another “Hum…I lost, Ahahah they have a premade, this is not because of me ! pfiou I’m saved for another day….” moment.
Now, the big question is, how will you manage the group feature ? limits it to 2 people and the first two to join are the happy winners ?
Sounds like maybe it’s just me having difficulties with it then.
I don’t run meta or use d/p.
Just train with it in the pvp lobby with bots, first npcs then beasts, then go for the lord, he has a breakbar. That should put you in the same situation as a guy with 4-5 stab stacks
For fun if I could, I would make it a teleport. Thief ports to players location, grabs them and ports back. This would open up a myriad of play options in sPvP and WvW.
At the very least it should work as well as the DH pull.
pretty much that :
look at 0:43.
they have the technology to do that, they already have done it for revenant. The grab might be a problem though. But it’s not scorpion wire anymore…
next end of season, with the longer break announced between season 4 and 5. That should be before may.
That elite is fine as it is.
It’s quite easy to land if you use it in the ~5-7% heal range. Traited with pulmonary impact, you have even more chance to succeed a instant stomp or at least a downed state. The end of the chain is around the proc of pulmonary impact. YOu get two scenarios, either you down the guy with the third part of the chain and he insta die, or you get him downed with the second part → he falls in downstate → the third skill cast time bypass the invuln frame → stomp.
The removal of invulnerability on downed in pvp, made that skill even easier to land, which is a sad thing. That feeling when you bypassed invulnerability was great and made the skill special…. Sometimes I use it around 50% hp for the damages and the surprising interrupt ( nice again thieves ).
I don’t know what you play in WvW, if you complain about stab it should be in blobs, then you should only use it on downed people. They can’t have stab on them, and it’s a quick way to stomp. You can even do chain 1 & 2 on the rezzing guy and stomp on the downed with retargetting. Or you can just use your head, watch the enemy toolbar and look at the stab amount. headshot spam and/or distracting dagger should be enough to get rid of the stab. else there is signet of nullification or signet of Absorption.
Anyway signet of nulification + bountiful theft is should rip 4 boons. isn’t that enough ? Let’s go further, if you trait rending shade + backstab + nulification + bountiful theft it’s 6 boons removed. That should be enough now…
Probably the biggest change to pvp this patch yet I haven’t seen a talk about it….
no invulns mean really fast kill on downed people. I don’t know if I like it or not. Sure rez bots ( hello rangers and engi o/ ) are not really a problem anymore. But we lose a bit of gameplay around downed. I think we still need an invuln frame even if it’s 1sec.
On a side note, I play thief and to time impact strike third chain skill is really easy now. It feels less rewarding.
The only thing I want fixed on thieves is the fact they can finish people in stealth. Its my bane as a warrior, since hamemr-throw requires targeting. If I play as a guardian, the interrupt is a pulse
You can basically activate action cam and throw your hammer without a target. it’s a bit random if you don’t know where the thief is located but you are more advantaged than a necro which need an actual target.
Can we come up with a reliable p/d pvp build now ?
I don’t really complain about the changes, venoms were on too high cooldowns to be considered.
the ability won’t land because I moved.
This is a problem with a lot of abilities with slow projectile speeds and I wish it would be fixed across the board.
Edit: Also give every character the line “Get over here!” when they use it.
The skill stolen from rev is actually pretty slow and quite easy to land.
One I just encountered today that I was not aware of. I am not sure how it can be applied to give an advantage in game but it was sort of neat.
I had set a shadowtrap some distance away from where I later got into a fight. I had a warrior with rifle pew pewing me from range so used Daggerstorm to reflect. As I was doing that he switched to melee and charged. Meanwhile someone tripped my shadowtrap so I clicked the pursuit. I had thought it would interrupt my daggerstrom but I poofed to my trap and when I reappeared I was still in my daggerstorm with 15 might stacks.
To do a shadow step, no matter which one you use, never breaks your current action.
There is no artefacts either ! nodes to cap as well ! How can we learn how to cap if there is no nodes to train with ?
I have 4 months playing guild wars 2 and I think I can make an opinion of it.
I’ll be honest, I never had an experience in MMO like Guild Wars 2 (PVE Content – Living World), is just beautiful.
But there are other things that upset me a lot, including WvW & PVP. I will not talk about it, everyone knows whats poppin.
All I want to talk here is about the Specializations. In this game you’re forced to use 1 meta build in different modes, YOU don’t have the freedom to create your own BUILD, They’re gonna scold you if you don’t have that " Bored Meta Build " unlike the Guild Wars (Original & others MMO’s) you could run soooo many crazy build’s and be successful but in Guild Wars 2 you have (1 class = 1 build) and then a massive amount of useless traits and skills.
You can have 3 specializations available in your build and then only 5 skills on your bar, really? is that enough for you?.. is just boring to use the same 3 traitlines on a class and the same weapon for 4+ MONTHS. You can’t customize your primary weapon skills with your secondary, or vice versa. You can’t edit your traits and skills as you want. Everything is like in “automatic” just click here & click there, there you got, done.
I’m sorry, but I think this game is very simple to me.
I’m curious about what you tested so far…..what class ? in which game mode ?
I only ever played GW1 and GW2 and I can tell that I’m trying builds and changing them as much in GW2 as in GW1.
In GW1 the build diversity was plain visible, in GW2 the build diversity is much more subtle. But it is real, maybe it has less range in term of number of skills but it has much depth in term of tuning.
The statement 1 class = 1 build is false. Each weapon set has a niche and finding that niche is what you need to do. Even so, there are some people that can just make things work no matter how exotic their build is. Not too long ago, I saw a video from Helseth or Sindrener talking about a p/p thief that was so good with it they had hard time killing him.
I’m starting to think, that it is the approach of diversity that is important. You can have the same build, but play it completely differently and you won’t have the feeling to play the same thing. Even more in GW2. if you take a D/P thief relying on stealth or a D/P thief relying on interrupts and blind, the same build ends up beeing two different things. Even runes to an extent, can provide drastic changes or provide confort of life.
You can’t look at diversity only from one class perspective. You have 9 professions, with different gameplays. I don’t think you tested everything in 4 month…
That comes from a guy that had a pvp character in GW1 named “Morve au nez” ( pretty much “snotty nose” ) so that I could swap from a life leeching necro to an air ele or a healing ritualist right away. There was not a single day I wouldn’t do that. So I know what build diversity means…
Can’t believe they’re addressing this before addressing the sad fact that it even costs more to get a single meta build than most casual players have ever had.
Top tier content for everyone my kitten .
It is entirely possible to get full ascended as a casual player. And even if you are too lazy for ascended armor, exotic armor is good enough for raids. Ascended weapons and trinkets give the best boost.
True, I have always been too lazy to craft daily mats. I got all my berserker ascended gear with 2 years of pvp and mystic forge stat swap.
So you basically want a competitive Hunt…
scorpion wire is a CaC pull with a misleading tooltip :p
I play it in pvp as well. At least people doesn’t expect it. I play greatsword, staff or greatsword S/Shield.
now you only need to try doing raid in gold stuff. It’s cheap you should be able to buy them by recycling your current stuff.
Or you can raid like a madman until the halloween patch. Take holidays forget about sleep and everything will be fine.
good luck and cheers !
Mess rorations? Most use this rotation #3 #3 #3 dodge #3 #3 #3. What’s hard about that?
I was talking about rotations on the map (PvP). When I change build I tend to forget the basics.
Adding distracting/impairing can help break that cycle of 3 3 3 3 which when neutralized can severely compromise the build.
As this appears to be Pvp you might also be made aware that the race can make a difference here. I note you were looking at caltrops, and that can be good for area denial i suppose , but I found in WvW Radiation field can be superior. It longer lasting and acts as a field for poisons.
If the Caltrops was intended as area denial I can see using them for that lower cooldown but whirling through a radiation field with your DBS and it being able to hit 6*2 times for poison and weakness can really pile on the conditions and especially in a poison build using DA. It also addes weakness.
Now i do not PvP but in WvW in the thief kit dropping caltrops and THEN a radiation field , followed by death blossoms through it is the most devastating Area denial i can think of and is all AOE meaning it can kill not only kill or force people off siege quickly, but kill that siege.
In any case if going this route try and look for ways to use fields of some type as the Whirl off DB can really be leveraged this way.
I underestimate the use of whirlfinisher, I will try to combine choking gas and death blossom. I don’t know how well I will manage the initiative.
(edited by Wargameur.6950)
If you not too keen on losing your interrupt consider Pressure strike. Trait up distracting daggers in addition. Use this carefully to interrupt enemy attacks and apply torment.
I would tend to favor imparing daggers over caltrops. Caltrops is a bit too visible and usually people leave when caltrops cast and you really do NOT want them to leave when you are doing a DB.
Needle trap a great choice simply because of the Immob. This allows you to DB spam overtop.
You can also consider RFI in the build., This a stun break, immob brak and will garner you a few more DBS.
Thrill of the crime not a good choice at all in a DB build. Uncatchable is better as your dodges will drop more bleeds. Fury and might just do not do anything for the build and you got enough swiftness off Dash.
It’s a good idea, I need to give it a try. I don’t know if pressure strike will be worth compared to trikster though. But the off season is here to try things
blame the translator but i guess u catch my drift. restricting this to pvp only 1 is beautiful fast range aoe dmg. besides the condi/dmg from each skills they each serve good functions like blasts, instant evades, healing reduction and the superior form of movement: teleportation. the shortbow is no weapon to make the 1v1 but is gives u everything to survive and interfere.
your idea for death blossom reminds me of fist flurry. but if u really think one dubdagger would survive without an evade skill in pvp i guess u never rly tried one before.
Ok I get the highly functioning weapon with alot of uses, but really in pvp and pve (Don’t know about WvW don’t really interest me) how many time have you switch from your main weapon set to your SB cuz you needed that Cluster Bomb (for the healing reduction) mostly (for me at least) you stick with your main weapon Staff or D/P or W.E and rarely you switch to the shortbow. I think that a weapon should stand on it’s own and you as a player would wanna switch to the shortbow cuz it has a good and different play style and not for 1 or 2 ability in that needed situation.
And I agree on the D/D ability that I offered, on second thought it really don’t fit. But I still think it needs to receive a change. What do you think, do it need change or is it just me?
Shortbow is actually the only set that allows me to kill downed people in team fight, the choking gas + cluster bomb is perfect. AOE pressure, condi pressure to tone down the awfully fast rez this season and cluster crit > letting the bomb explode on the ground. ( yea, try harding AA and HS on downed + steal on the rezzing guy is also doable but, It’s annoying )
The blast finisher is also really nice as a combo with the stolen skill from rangers.
I would say that short bow is a really good support weapon and that it adapts to both power and condi builds
Hey thieves !
I started getting into d/d condi because this is off season. I start to really like it, after hammering into my head than it’s not because I play condi that I have to mess my rotations and +1 differently.
this is my build :
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQNAoY1k0MxmngpTsQVUzXf3X+d9UAcAeXQKUCA-TJRAABZt/AAPAAyKDE9JAAA
Since rune of the adventurer is an energy refill on heal and I have plenty of evades for condi clear, what should I pick ?
Needle trap seems to be my best choice, but I don’t really know…
Since I have Dash, should I keep caltrop ? or is Thrill of crime a better option ?
I know that Bewildering ambush is 5 stack of confusion. But I can’t live without an interrupt…..
I find it more easy to go very quickly to close on red on nifhelm with my thief. There are less dumb obstacles on the way for shortbow shadowstep.
When you’re losing a lot, it really isn’t any fun at all, so I can understand why some players might prefer WvW roaming.
Anyway, how are you guys getting extra info like “longest streak” for the season?
On the league pannel you get the number of win streak or loss streak, depending on which you currently are.
Yo anet, if you read this and decide to fix auto targeting (to how it has been) – please note that in the patchnotes.
Honestly, what currently baffles me is why there’s so little emphasis on combat in this game.
ETA: Daggerstorm is about a third worse without auto target. So if we’re talking about what should be balanced we now need to say which game mode and which targeting mode we use so that others get where we’re coming from… …. ….
Or I need to decide: “I’m going to do some solo roaming, so auto target off – waaah a blob fight, I need my auto target LET ME OC SO THAT I CAN SWITCH.”
I don’t understand how daggerStorm is worse without auto targetting…..
Come on ? no perfectly horrible ratio to show off ?
I wonder where those horrible forum stories come from….
They’re not posting here for fear of toxic members of the community pointing and laughing. Seriously, if you lost 75% of your games and couldn’t get out of emerald, would you show it off in a thread full of legends?
The purpose was to get a sample of different people. I guess some people are showing off. But I don’t mind people still in low divisions. That’s what is interesting, see different profiles of people playing sPvP. There are not that much legend people in the lobby.
-It’s challenging on thief, and I got to a level where I can manage things without being wreaked.
-It’s the only game mode, I can play around builds without caring about money.
-I only played GW as CORPG/MMO so I’m used to it and still liking it.
-I spent most of my time playing pvp in GW1, AvA was the most fun I had. This is the game mode that is the closest to that.
Come on ? no perfectly horrible ratio to show off ?
I wonder where those horrible forum stories come from….
(edited by Wargameur.6950)
Bump. I just bought the expansion yesterday. This is ALREADY something I do not like at all. I found multiple hero points where a champion has to be defeated. Sorry, but I’m a casual player. I CAN’T beat a Champion by myself – not even close. In my case there was even another person standing there watching me die. HOW, exactly, is a new player supposed to beat those when no one is around to help out (especially in the first zone, since that zone is considered “old” now)?
I am sorry, but since when casual players are immune to grouping with other players or asking for help in map chat? Today I fully unlocked my elite spec from start to finish for few hours roaming around VB and AB. If there wasn’t people around to help for the hardest HPs I simply asked in map chat for help, if no one showed I switched maps and repeated the process. Eventually you will find people to help out. I dont understand why so many people are opose to group with others in MMO game? Why? This is the very essence of multiplayer games… to seek other players and overcome challenges together. I will never understand why somone comes here and posts into such topics instead of spending some time to actually try and learn the ways of the maps, the mechanics those champions uses and how to most effectively deal with them. Why do you expect to get everything, without putting atleast a sliver of effort in the process?
I don’t have a thumb, so can’t use dodge key, so I need HP without dodging. (trolling answer )
I have noticed something… We thieves, we are so kittening good at running away! It’s amazing how we can zoom across half the map in a matter of seconds and leave our opponents, who are already thirsty for our blood, thirsting for a bit longer.I actually love it!
Dying? NOT ME! I’ve got WINGS OF FLIGHT! (but not fight)…
well you said you where new?
To make a successful thief you need to know the mechanics of other professions.
take a day and just roll other professions, this will tell you what to dodge and when.Well, new to PvP, not the classes, or the mechanics of the game. I know every class as I’ve played them all in PvE, but PvP is a whole different adventure.
He was talking about the mechanisms in a pvp context. playing a DH in pve and fighting one on a node with a thief is a whole different matter. Vulnerability frames are not the same in pve and pvp.
I don t think fair matchmaking is having just a 50% winrate when all games end like 500-100 either way. I had many games in the highest division in this game in pvp , where i met ppl who had absolutely no clue what to do. Afk on a node for a whole game, attacking while backpaddeling. This were things i found in hotjoin back in the days nowadays it is ranked legend devision.
I agree, but it seems that was their aim this season. I think it’s a pretty hard problem to solve. I would do win = 1 pip, loss = 1 pip, you can lose pips at every tiers and no safe net ( tiers and league treshold ) and law of nature instead of MMR. And replace people in according league (like now ) when a season end. This might be a bad idea though.
but the range between score could be a good indicator.
Anyway it’s nice to see your results guys
yo look at me im better than you! i have more wins, im good and you all just newbs. and mine’s longer.
That’s not what it is about, I was curious to see how people in the forum did. There are so much threads about forced 50% winrates, or this season match making sucks. So I wanted to see, how people really did.
I suppose, it is biaised since most of the forum players are vets. But were can you get the stats somewhere else than here ?
Maybe you can toggle action cam on, select someone, and then toggle it off. The targeting with action cam is smooth and you don’t need to be really precise with it.
I do that sometimes on p/p.
I never saw you play, but It might be one of the most epic thing to see :p I’m joking here, but still curious.
Now that I read the wall of text of the OP, I just don’t like the asuras of today, they are soft, try to be cute, and above else are annoying without that pride characterizing geniuses ( remember Oola, Gadd, Vekk, anyone ? ) I don’t think half of you know the word bookah as well.
Yes, asuras are supposed to be hateful little thing that only care about their inventions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMGr-avzxaU
sigh… I miss Gadd instead of asura with the moto " I stand for Asura kind".
Why is that thread in the pvp section ?
You can’t treat all Chinese as if they all agree with Mao.
You can’t treat all American as if they all agree with Donald Trump.
You can’t treat all Asuran as if they all agree with their council.
You can’t treat all ANet devs as if they all agree with the balance team.
AHAH I liked that !
