Dagger Storm is almost useless in PvP or WvW anyways… I really just use that skill while I’m low to gain health with Signet of Malice. That skill doesn’t do much damage – max 4K with critics… That skill needs some, uhh, damage not CD obviously.

The only self stab application that allow you to bypass CC birds while gliding in enemy territory, that’s the real use :p

Because they are mechanically not the same entity.

portals are objects made to be interactive. They are the parents of the tech behind continuum split and mirage’s mirrors. All literal teleport ( teleport gun ) work the same way.

Traps are just a different tech entirely. So they have to rely on path finding.

This is just supposition but it might not be worth their time to convert traps into the same time of object as portals ( + changes to traits and runes that react to traps only ) or even to redo shadow trap entirely.

btw does someone knows if flesh worm’s teleport uses path finding or literal teleport ?

Edit : BobbyT’s post might be the right answer, I was not there at that time. Still changing a skill to a buggier version because it is too strong is a weird decision :/

Is Backstab even worth it anymore?

I find backstab useful in one specific case :

You burnt your initiative down and you have a target with low hp running away. he is low and on cooldown as well but you know he will heal soon ( best example is an engi with 25% hp ). The only thing you have left to burst really quick is an offensive blind powder + backstab combo.

Tricks are really something to consider with deadeye. Since the reduced cooldown patch they are fairly viable

Your character will turn around when attacking after a withdraw/ roll for initiative. The same doesn’t apply for shadowstep……

You can do fun stuff with instant skills, not only during stun phases.

Pretty much every actions with a loading bar are not interrupted by instant cast.
You can start opening a chest, shadowstep 1,200 units away and shadow step back to loot it. Same for mining / logging. Pretty fun to do and sometimes useful to avoid AOEs during mining.

- Add some mesmers for quickness & feedback protection bubbles.
- Maybe some mesmer/thief (for stealth) & spellbreaker bombers.

I agree with the choice to go for the +1 close. When your teammates are not good at rotations, you can force them to do some good choices with a thief. If the close fight is done, they would naturally go to help mid, even with half a brain.

I would consider mid in the following cases :
- There is an engi mid and you can force him into elixir. That would reduce the pressure on your teammates and create a short window of 3v2 in your favor.
- There is a ranged class that apply pressure from a relatively safe place and don’t expect a gank.
- You can steal on a necro and get double fear to disrupt the fight.
- You are condi s/d and can apply aoe poison & bleed pressure

shortbow is amazing on both !

It’s a melee shotgun in disguise. The damage on cluster bomb is quite high since every cluster has a chance to critical hit. Really useful against thieves that just went into stealth but you know are still nearby.

Btw list of SB utility :

- blast finisher on demand
- poison field = -20% heal efficiency. >6 poison stack daze on each pulse ( great for pve breakbar & rez denial )
- evade
- mobility with port

My Perspective of D.E's problem

The ammunition system wasn’t implemented to counteract the ability to spam the skills. So having to kneel which is a special ability for Deadeye to grant us better damage giving skills doesn’t make sense, at most reduce initiative cost to 1. Because when we kneel we barely have enough initiative to attack and if needed skill 4 to get out of harms way, and then go back into a kneel which will cost even more initiative. What if people don’t take the trickery trait line? 1 kneel basically take up half their initiative.

Tl;dr We either need to reduce initiative count to 1, or increase initiative regeneration

I’m pretty sure kneel already have an initiative cost of one. If not then you treated it to give you stealth, that’s a choice you made. I played deadeye without stealth and I had plenty of initiative to burst in kneeled mode.

I think we just need to get used to the kneel thing, it’s a trade I’m ready to have. But I join your opinion on most of your other points. Especially the “no fire after teleport thing” this is really annoying….

I haven’t the slightest idea where I got the high initiative cost from. I was so convinced too. I must’ve been fast cast subconsciously pressing kneel while hitting something else without thinking. And I always assumed It drained more intiative. I guess I am my own culprit. Wow. I feel dumb. Yeeshhh haha.

But yes the other points still apply (:

I guess you were playing with shadow art. You went with silent scope ( which make kneel cost 4 initiative ). You would do something like mark & kneel then death’s jugment ( 6 init ). That would explain the high init cost.

I understand why people would go for the stealth sniper route, but the cost for kneel + #4 with that set up is more than black powder + HS without the utility….

Here are a few starter tips:

- Learn how to use your weapon set. Thief is the class relying the most on combo fields.
- Learn what hit hard on other classes.
- Go for the fights you are sure to win ( Don’t waste time in equal fights or outnumbered )
- swapping to shortbow during difficult situations can save your life.

As for the rest, practise and feel it with your body ^^

When I kill ranger really fast, it’s usually that I got 3-4 interrupts. The damages from PI + AA is usually enough.

Btw be careful to the weakness proc, your damages will fall greatmy if you don’t clear it !

What, a whole trait for a QoL change? Seems a bit much, considering all you have to do is steal take a step, and turn a few degrees to face the opponents back.

I’m pretty sure that you can run across someone and backstab him in the back without turning the camera. Grenth bless the lack of body blocks ^^

I know the amount of discipline required would be too much for usual WvW squads, but wouldn’t it be possible to create a full Deadeye squad ?

I heard stories about people trying small teams of deadeyes. When they all focus on the same target, its just ridiculous how fast they can pick people off. That was until the other team got wise, and started sending their flankers after them.

I joined such a team in WvW. We were 5 deadeyes without voice comm. It is really powerful. Once on position we held the rock between Redbriar and the bottom left spawn from the borderland. We could snipe every guys coming against us, even outnumbered. The problem lies in the way to deal with positioning, when one start to crumble, the entire group has trouble.

I believe that with a voice comm you can effectively reset fights as a DE group. I mean theoretically, a squad could run shadow trap and have the whole squad disengage easily^^

Open world i agree with above sw/p has been the better option for me, mob clear does get insane. For spvp i prefer sw/d you can bunker down a node by being an annoying evasion tank, with solid sustainable damage, your not as bursty as your d/p brethren but you can sit on a node happily duking it out.

You can bunker a node as easily on s/d main than d/p :p You just need shortbow #3 and dodges ^^

before staff s/p was the best set to clear groups of mobs.

If you go for a power build keep power stats on your shortbow. Cluster bomb deals insane amount of damages even on power, and choking gas is used to demolish breakbars.

The major thing about condi deadeye is that there is no pause in the application of condis & immob.

You are also using the pierce ability which mean aoe condi to an extent…

If he stuns you, or petrifies you, you got outplayed. Easy as that.

Daredevil is what his name implies. He’s a all in – go ham – thief subclass that’s all about doing damage and taking as little as possible.

Every single one of the new stolen items are trash.

Consume Ectoplasm itself trumps the entire set of new stolen items.

As I said before, they spent all their time, effort, and creativity on the classes they have favoured since GW1 and just smacked on rifle, to please the vocal minority open world PvEers, and called it a day.

Worst espec in this expansion, followed closely by Renegade (based on what we saw in the demo).

You must have never used them properly again..

Whirl, Added DPS, and projectile reflect. SUUUPER useful against rangers.
Mace Head Crack: It’s a freaking daze! It’ll stop them from harming you for a few precious seconds and it’s a free interrupt!
Steal thing from Revenant SLOOOOWS! How is that worthless when our enemy can’t can’t escape the kitten?
Throw gunk… is admitably meh if you are not built for conditions.
Healing Seed, it’s a free bit of sustain. That’s the difference of you winning a fight or not.

My favorite will always be Necromancer’s. Fear. I ALLLLLWAYS hold onto this fun little thing. Find a Zerg next to a cliff. Sneak up on them and pop that skull. Watch the kills rack up as a bunch of people go running off of the cliff to their deaths.

And I don’t know if you ever payed attention to the videos of the thief before the game released. But that steal ability is also good for letting the thief run off to some random ass mob in the middle of a fight, test his luck on what he grabs and comes back to blow someone’s head off with a rifle he stole from a moa.

FYI the combo of the stolen skill off ranger with Panic Strike and Potent Poison gives Superspeed, Immobilize and two stacks of poison.

Stolen skill on necro is 5 stacks of bleed as well

Deadeye- pvp perspective

1. Using rifle skill on enemy behind character’s back is not atacking target (pistol is). Forces a lot of camera movement, annoying.

This is really annoying especially if you use shadowstep for a hit and run tactic while kneeling.

The initiative cost of rifle is too high.
If deadeye would offer a kind of faster initiative regen, this would shake up meta alot.

The costs are fine and in line with any other set if not cheaper for the effecs achieved.

since there are so many blocks and reflects and on top of that, gap closers literally everywhere, even costs of 0 wouldn’t help, since deadeye doesn’t have the possibility for unblocking attacks.

This a learn to play issue. I play p/p as well and manage to get around all of those blocks and reflcts without spending 0 ini on an attack.

Blocks by the way work just as well against DrD . The DRD spec does not make any attacks unblockable and there little in any weaponset that is unblockable.

1: The people you quoted are specifically talking about rifle.

2: Shadow Shot says hi.

I wanted to make a thread about that skill ^^

I would like it to be an aoe reveal on landing. It fits the theme and it would provide the first enemy reveal for thief…

It would also gives Deadeye a counter to DrD.

A “new field” which had as one of its abilities an AOE reveal on a leap would be interesting but there so many reveals I am not sure it will help the thief a lot in the long run unless that field type remained very exclusve to thief.

I ‘m not talking about reveal field, just plain and simple reveal. I just didn’t want to create a separate thread for the same utility

Changing the face of war? How about 5 guys spending half an hour to hunt down a perma invis deadeye in SM. He could interrupt us while ressing without getting spotted, be could just yolo everywhere and get away with it. When you finally caught him and got him to low hp he would simply blink/dodge away in stealth and come out full hp again. The sad thing is that after 30 minutes we did not catch him, we just gave up and went somewhere else…

A thief can do that even without deadeye ^^

Try to play it with tricks (withdraw & roll for initiative) and shadow flare + shadow step.

Now use the utilities as if you where playing on sword. You can stay on kneel mode since the utilities are used to move around.

General impression
I was not really hyped with Deadeye to begin with. My first impression was that nothing really worked. After a while and a visit to WvW I found a hit and run build. Now I really like the difference in gameplay it offers compared to DrD.

Visual & Sound
As usual the visual on thief is a tricky part, you can’t have too flashy things but here I think it works.Honourable mention to death’s retreat. As for the sound I’m fine with it, but some people I talked to found it annoying ( maybe tune down the duration of the “dwiiiing” thing )

Weapon
I think the initiative cost is well balanced for this weapon set. I found myself using it without the mandatory Trickery traitline, it opens more build perspectives

  • The pierce skill is good and allow to deal with minion masters & mesmer
  • The leap finisher is nice on death retreat, it made me consider using smoke screen for defense. Don’t make it instant since all weapons retreat have a cast time.
  • At first I thought the kneel mechanic was clunky, now I’m used to it. It’s a nice trade off for the power it offers. My proposition here is to cancel the stance after a dodge . In most case you don’t want to be static after a dodge.

Mark & Malice
The Deadeye mark is somewhat a let-down adding a cast time removes all the utility steal offers….It also add time to the set up before doing damage. Kneeling before a fight is ok, kneeling + death mark break the flow.

I never really profited from the malice mechanic, it stacks up very slowly . In fact I found myself killing people or disengaging before it reached half the stacks on rifle.

Utilities

  • Malicious restoration : I never used that skill, the cooldown and the required malice stacks (given the load of condis applied quickly ) don’t match with the current state of the game
  • Shadow gust : I don’t know what to do with that skill, same role as blind power. Seems balanced but I won’t be using it. Maybe fit in a D/D power build.
  • Mercy : Really strong skill in certain builds
  • Shadow Flare : Right know shadow flare is too close to shadowstep. Adding an aoe reveal on landing of this skill would make it truly unique !
  • Shadow Meld : OK elite

Traits

  • Peripheral vision : This skill would make more sense if boons where applied around the marked target. This would offer group support on rifle in all game mode. As it is the trait don’t match with the range of the rifle.
  • Perfectionist : Malice stacks too slow, you don’t profit from that skill…
    The rest is ok

EDIT: I would really my shadow flare proposition to make it, it both fit the theme and provide interesting counter plays against other thieves.

It’s funny how different we make builds

I’m playing DE rifle like S/D with DA/TR/DE
TR : bottom,mid,mid
DE : all middle traits
DA: all middle
utilities : withdraw, roll for initiative, shadow flare, shadow step

This is quite fun to use and make a good chunk of damage. As usual it relies on not getting hit using shadow flare/shadowstep aggressively to position yourself and spam 3 round burst.
Nice 1v1 potential so far and ok mobility.

Hey,

Sometimes I get stuck with deadeye and I would like to know if people have that bug as well.

It seems to happen when you are on kneel position then get disabled and shadowstep. If I use a skill like double tap my character will stay in the same direction without moving. This is a problem because often you are not facing the opponent after a shadowstep and the skill just don’t work….

deadeye works without trickery just fine. What gets me killed is that I have to get out of kneel by pressing the skill 5. I Naturally want to move out of harms way, but end up forgetting that I have to press 5 then I can move. If I could just kneel and break kneel with normal movement that would be great. If the breaking kneel with skill 5 could do something like return some initiative and break kneel or something I would be down with that.

Weapon stow works to break kneel.

Hah, alright, that’s cool.

Might try it later. Kinda bypasses the issue of the target moving out of range as the damage keeps tickin’ either way.

Even better, the target doesn’t leave range :p

hey there,

I’ve been playing around with a condi deadeye build ( since I didn’t really know how to be impactful with power ) for pvp. Here is the link :

The missing things :
- weapon : Rifle
- utility : Mercy
-traits : one in the chamber + Peripherical vision+ Be quick or be killed

How to play :

kneel -> use mark -> spam 2 -> use mercy -> use mark again -> spam 2

Your target will get perma imob + 10 stacks of confusion + ~12-15 stacks of poison.
Viper can be swapped with carrion on small maps when kiting is difficult

I never understood that mystic coin farm need….

I have 277 mystic clovers from 3 years of pvp. I didn’t even know I had that much until I looked at how to craft incinerator XD

Hum….so how do you consider blocks + retaliation ? or shield of arcane from ele ? or the focus shield from guard.

Trick I learned in pvp on thief : never gank a mid fight on the target. It’s often the center of aoe. Instead focus a guy that is hitting from a safe distance.

This will decrease the pressure on your team and you will most likely fatally damage your target.

Ping or Instant Reflexes on someone running Acro which is now being played a ton given the buffs to sword. The evade frames on baseline dodge are otherwise identical lol.

Really ? I always thought the tooltip “3/4 sec” dodge indicated a shorter dodge frame….Or it might be because the dodges are longer than the core ones^^ As I was saying before, it’s just an impression. I’m not in the conspirational train here.

Well sometimes I’m pretty sure I should get damages at the end of dodge but I’m evading it perfectly fine. It might be my imagination since 3/4 of a second or 1 sec are not that differents…

It was not clear but next weekend we can preview the specs that said.

Cursed bullet . Fire a cursed bullet that tracks your target and converts its boons into conditions. Deals increased damage while kneeling.

Tracks its target MIGHT mean it can get someone in stealth. Just a guess

If it is a chaneled skill ( as short as the channel can be ) the bullet will follow in stealth like unload or rapid fire.

The meta thief is along those lines :

you have max : 5 teleports on that build ( 2 from shadowstep, 1 from steal, 2 more on lucky improvisation for shadowstep ), usually just 3.

you have on demand stealth : blinding powder, d/p black powder + heartseeker ( heavy initiative drain ).

The funny part is the general rotation : there is none, a good thief will mostly react to what you do. In general you will have a steal followed by a burst and if it failed the thief will kite with either shortbow of stealth.

btw you should make a DrD in pvp and play a few game with it ( the template build is the meta one ). You will quickly see what is possible and what is not.
