thanks for the response, Webba. : )) agreed. well, written in my post, i touched upon OP’s tone in his reponses. wasn’t telling him off, just pointing that out, which is one of the reasons why i feel he’s getting these type of responses here. i am on the same page, i feel his OP is being being midunderstood, or more likely, being lvl 80 themselves who “farm” starter maps feel “attacked”. and through that, the OP is feeling “attacked” as well. ://

once anyone brings labels onto the table, people will feel a need to side or pick a side they belong to. whether it be for 80’s for newbies, what have you.

No problems, Akamon. I certainly wasn’t responding to your post, or any one post in particular really. Just an observation on the reasons behind so much of the unpleasantness around here that could be avoided by a little more consideration of each others points of view. Its nice to see that in the meantime the tone of this particular thread has at least improved a lot.

RNG isn't the problem, gems are

I dont really understand why Anet doesn’t just increase the tax on purchasing gems with in game gold if that is such a dent to their income, and reduce the cost of gems for real money at the same time to encourage people to go that way. These are both things they have complete control over, the idea that they have to use RNG to keep the gem store afloat when literally every element of the economy is under their direct control seems very strange to me.

This is a sandbox game at 80! There is no starter zones outside the instance at the beginning of the game. 80s still need to farm low level mats too.

No one suggested, or even inferred that lvl 80 players should not be allowed in low level zones, mate.

A New Class

Thats definetely the way for GW2’s future I hope in regard of better horizontal character progression I’d definetly would like to see happening within the upcoming add ons, because those are mostly likely the patchs, which would be the only way to implement this kind of content, because in regard of marketing it would be the best way to do that, because sub classes would be a huge tease to buy the add ons in the end.

I dont know if it is good to codify horizontal progression quite so much as you are suggesting, effectively sub classes exist at the moment because of the vast differences in how you can trait and equip your characters. 100% agree with you that expanding existing classes is definitely the next step.

For the first expansion what I really hope to see apart from a real tightening up of the pve environment (the current tendency towards zerker builds is almost entirely caused by strange mob and boss design, rather than any problem with support or cc builds) is a new race, and new weapons, utilities and elites for all existing classes. Preferably ones that you have to go out and earn doing pve content rather than just buying with skillpoints, since everyone has a billion skill points by now.

And here we are again. Yes Mf users are more likely to die because they do not have the relevant combat stats but that doesn´t mean they will. Because skill is also needed apart from stats. A dungeon would take longer for a party of 5 MFers but there does not have to be a single death. There are harder and easier dungeons and yes, high level dredge fractal would be a pain for 5 MFers but not impossible. Skill and experience is needed as well.

There is plenty of MFers so no one would be looking too long for a party. Plus, a MFer can switch to some other gear for the tougher fights if he/she has one. Like, for the imbued shaman. And since most encounters in dungeons are trash mobs (there is a lot of people arguing “to skip or not to skip” or “play it the way it was supposed to be played”) the stats loss is not such a pain as people tend to say it is. For normal encounters you do not need all the combat stats nor skill, the problem comes with bosses. There, I agree, an unskilled MFer will drag the party down. But than again an uskilled meta zerker will be a burden as well, especially if he can´t dodge.

I agree that MF needs to be changed, I just disagree with the sharing/averaging solution. It is the same as the (un)holy trinity in this game. There is none (and that is good from my point of view). You are responsible for your own life, damage, tanking ability etc. You are unique asset to the party (world) so you should be responsible for your own MF as well.

Sharing/averaging MF is a sollution yes but sloppy one if you ask me. It is more like putting a carpet over a hole rather than filling it with…whatever you fill holes with…

In party you work together and yes, when it comes to stats MFer isn´t doing as much as others but he is stil contributing and it is not a stat only thing. MF guarian gives you aegis and protection either way, MF thief will still cloak you with shadow refuge the same way as always. MF ranger will still criple all of the mobs with his longbow and his pet will revive you when you are downed. I do not run MF but my elite banner prevented wipe many time when all 4 of my party members got downed in the same place. This is what matters too.

You make some good points but what exactly would the alternative to sharing mf be? I mean personally Id prefer it gone from the game altogether or at least hard capped at 100% or something but Im restricting myself to consider solutions that have at least a snowflakes chance in hell of Anet actually implementing. In any case I still am not convinced mf would become the required stat simply because the best way to earn money from dungeons right now is to zerk through them as fast as possible, and to a speed runner slowing down the dungeon run (which mf gear on every player would most certainly do, regardless of how good they are) is as bad as wiping.

I also agree that they need to add more underwater content, at least one world boss.

But if they do add more content underwater, they should also let us have more underwater weapon. On my ele, I can only use 1, which is a bit stupid.

And yet it gives you 20 skills, where all the other classes get only 10. More underwater weapons for everyone would be needed.

This is an about turn from their initial design philosophy.

I’m sure the math works out better for the cash shop with RNG involved, but it’s leaving a very sour taste in my mouth, considering I have been rooting for GW2 since 2010.

I’m not giving Anet another cent until I am convinced they are backing off from such opportunistic practices.

This should be a petition.

Does noone see the irony in sharing/averaging MF among the party? The OP stated that MFer are statisticaly weaker becasue they take MF for personal gain rather than taking combat suitable stats, which is true. And at the same time he (and others) stated that they don´t want to run with these people because they handicap themselves and that the entire party have to work up the loss. That creates biases against MFers. When you introduce sharing/averaging MF system the tables will turn and MF will start posting that they do not want to run with noneMFers because they lower MF for them.

The reason this is not a problem is because, essentially, parties fight together but they do not loot together. Every character stat except mf has at least some benefit to other members of the party, which is the problem that averaging it across a party would attempt to fix. The situation you envisage would be very unlikely to materialize because a)running full zerker is the meta way to do dungeons, if mf wasn’t a significant kitten of character power this would not be the case, b)mf heavy players who refuse to group up with others would be faced with either trying to solo the dungeon or grouping up with other mf heavy players and then wiping because they have compromised too much fighting ability. Both these factors should prevent the problem of mf becoming the new elite stat.

A dispiriting lack of empathy on these boards…

mind elaborating this?

Sure, no worries. I mean the way so many replies to the OPs post are so downright hostile or indignent when what he actually posted does not seem to merit that sort of response at all. It seems that the majority of people replying have not tried to, or are not capable of, imagining being in a situation that the OP describes and what that might feel like.

Accusations that the OP is rude or making demands on higher level players, when his post would imply that he has been nothing but polite in his requests in game and on the forum seem to show that people either do not understand what he wrote, or are too busy being insulted by a perceived complaint directed at them personally (no such complaint exists) to understand that this is simply another player recounting his somewhat frustrating experience.

I am one of those lvl 80 players who has been tooling around the low level zones (and you are just being a kitten if you choose to ignore the well known fact that lvl 80 gear and build gives a significant/massive advantage in the starter zones) and if a player there asked me if I could possibly go somewhere else so they could finish a heart I would be happy to do so, I have 100% map completion after all.

Thats me though, and I tend to be very naive about these things. I assume people are misunderstanding the op when in actual fact they could just be being intentionally mean to them.

So, you basically want a special skin that everyone would have?
For all the people who complain about the rarity of the item there are people that would complain just as much if everyone was running around with their rare skins.

I dont think you grasped the full meaning behind his article. GEMS PAID FOR FROM REAL $CASH for the gem chests should yeild HIGHER drop percentage since most people Pay real cash for gems right at the starte of a festival. Seriously anet, thats messed up and I COMPLETELY agree that the gem store bought chests need to have higher incentives and drop rate for rarer things such as skins and other festive things we try to get. Its BS its even come this far, how many festivals has it been now? I refuse to buy gems now because of this little fact. Theres no point, the gem store chests are such a rip off (SCAM)!!!! Seriously, dont buy them.

The paid for chests do have a higher drop rate. Its just not much higher and since its still completely RNG its entirely possible to get very unlucky, and very kitten ed off, with them. Clearly it is making money for Anet though, or they wouldn’t have kept doing it after Halloween. I have not, nor would I ever, spend a cent of real money on something like that and honestly dont understand why anybody would.

My idea (which I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned, as I have not read through the entire thread) is basically:

1: If you are in a party, add up everyone’s magic find %.
2: Divide by the number of people in the party.
3. Disregard current personal magic find stats for the party members.
4: The new total from the group magic find is now applied to everyone in the party, until they leave party, upon which they regain their personal magic find stat.

Problem solved, and balanced so you don’t get obscene numbers.

Yeah, more than a few of us have suggested this. Its a good idea.

Yes, but what I would like to see the possibility to spare “all” (some) mobs, at least the humanoid one’s. I am not saying I don’t want to kill anyone in the game, but I don’t like the feeling of killing every single mob in the game. Makes me feel like mass murderer, and not a hero.

Or that they randomly (pretty often) yield and become immune to damage just as with the skill challenger duels.

Or run away and leave a loot bag.

For example:

Let’s say my quest objective is to “defeat” 10 centaurs or whatever.

I would like to have the choice to spare them/only hurting them instead of killing them, or at least that some of them give up and become passified or something.

Get it?

We understand man, we’re just saying the mechanic already exists in the game so it wouldn’t be that hard for Anet to implement. Understand?

That may work for guild groups, Webba, but for random groups, I don’t think so. And for people playing in the world with full MF gear, it would actually have the opposite effect – it would discourage them even more of grouping. Why would they accept to lower their magic find for total stranger?
As I said, I’ve been playing those games for a long time. If the average MMORPG player was willing to “share” something, reducing his own efficiency, without anything to gain for him, it would be known.
I see your point, your intention is definitely good and praise worthy (and the OP’s intention too, by the way), but I seriously doubt it will achieve the goal you want it to :-)

You may well be right, reading your post I think its likely that it would not encourage pugs, at least not pugs between hardcore farmers and casual players. Honestly, I think there is very very little you can do to encourage significantly different players to play together though. It would at least change how people view mf in dungeons though.

edit – It does make me think though. What about simply providing minor buffs to things like movement speed or mf for being in a party? Maybe each class could bring a different passive bonus to a party to encourage diversity as well.

Average mf* of all party members = sum of party members mf / number of party members. Would encourage grouping and solve the question of mf in dungeons in one go.

*magic find

I don’t think it would solve anything. It would actually make some “leech” other’s magic find and reduce the overall magic find of the whole group. Do you really think people using magic find gear would accept theirs to be reduced to an “average” because some people don’t have any?

If they wanted to help their friends, sure they would. Also it wouldnt reduce the overall magic find, it would spread it out over the group. If you want you could add a 10% bonus to it for grouping as well. eg sum of player mf / number of players + 10% if you must have some benefit. You miss the point also that people who use mf while in groups are essentially leeching character power from the other group members, you dont think its fair that the other group members should leech their mf? Leeching is a biased word though, call it sharing and it sounds much nicer.

I guess my point is that as far as mf is concerned at the moment there is actually a disincentive to party up because some are getting more benefit than others depending on each invidivuals mf. If the mf is averaged over the whole group than the whole group benefits according to their overal mf / power compromise.

Webba’s Daily Suggestion
This occurred to me while playing the Crab Toss recently and concerns the reflecting crystals that players have to pick up and throw back during the final boss fight. This particular fight is pretty mechanically simple and straightforward once players are familiar with it and it could do with some new things to make it, not necessarily harder or easier, but a bit more interesting and involved.

A simple change could be to give players the ability to throw their crystal to a teammate (in the same way you could throw the crab to someone in crab toss). Players can often end up out of range of a crystal when they get targeted and to the current options of either dodging or rezzing quickly could be added the ability for quick thinking players to throw a crystal their way and get rewarded with an extra chance to dmg the boss. If more than one crystal is thrown to a person the excess ones could just appear on the ground near them. This could also be used as a way to move the crystals to a safe area for later use.

Might make the fight a bit more fun.

Everyone please add your own suggestions for how to make the Jade Maw fight more interesting or involving for players.

If it was made so that each individual in the party got an mf bonus equal to the sum of all party members mf / number of party members then it would be a fair way to balance out a single person running mf gear (since their own mf% would decrease while their party members rose). This would avoid the obviously exploitable situation where everyone runs mf gear in an easy dungeon for 800% mf bonus or something equally ridiculous.

I agree with the OP. I didn’t bother to read the thread because I just know there are a bunch of people telling the OP that he’s wrong and this game is actually too easy. But what it comes down to is personal experience and mine is the same as the OP.

I haven’t played the game in about 6 weeks. At the end of Flame & Frost I was very discouraged that I couldn’t see the end of the event because I didn’t want to deal with soloing the instances. I did the one instance to rescue the girl with 2 friends who are both very good players. It was still very difficult. They had already done the other instance.

Add to that the difficulty of the personal story and the environmental stuff as in the OP and I just am not motivated to login. Its really a shame, because I think this game has a lot of potential.

If you dont have the common courtesy to read our opinions why should we give two kittens about yours? Most posts in the thread have been helpfully offering advice, which you would have realized if you weren’t downright rude.

I also have tremendous difficulty staying interested in the game. There’s just a lot of little things that add up as I play. I haven’t gotten far with any class, my furthest is a level 32 necromancer, but I have tried every class and can tell pretty fast if they’ll be enjoyable.
In my experience mesmers kill brutally slow, just takes forever, and you’d think having all those clones would make it easy but it is brutally slow.
I have found elementalists to be extremely enjoyable because of the MASSIVE weapon skill selection, I run a dagger focus ele and enjoy her very much. Think I was like level 15 before I unlocked every weapon skill. Swapping back and forth through attunements is great and you can conjure even more skills with elemental weapons.
I really enjoyed warrior too because they are very powerful in PvE but their armor is so ugly it is unbearable. Just draped in chainmail for at least the first 20 levels it sucks.
I wouldn’t recommend necromancer because by level 30 you have every single skill you’ll ever use and there’s no real need to weapon swap. They’re just kind of boring.
I got to like level 22 on an engineer and wouldn’t recommend them either. Weapon swapping is a waste though the kits are interesting if not largely useless. They’re a conflicted class where there most powerful skills like the wrench big bomb and grenade field require being too close to enemies while their too weak to withstand much punishment.
I really don’t understand how anyone gets a character to 80 since by 30 you have every skill you’ll ever use. How does that not bore you?

Your only motivation for lvling up is to unlock new skills? How about refining your build and learning how to properly use the ones you have? Or teamwork with guildmates? Or achievement collection? Or just playing content?

PS Your experience with mesmers is way, way off base because they only really get good at PVE after lvl 30 which you didn’t bother going past.

PPS The skills and weapons I used at 30, and the way I used them, are completely different from the ones I use at 80. The environment is different, the tactics are different and the relative effectiveness of various things changes a lot. Just because you’ve unlocked everything doesn’t mean you have finished a class.

Im a casual player and my suggestion to all other casual players who are finding parts of the game too hard is that next time you have 1 hour to play use 30 minutes of that time to read up on your class forum. The hardcore players have done all the work for us and found out how to make our classes work well. 30 minutes research, adjust your build and then see how much easier the game is. You do not have to play thousands of hours to be very good at GW2.

Feel free to contact me in game as well if you want. I pretty regularly run dungeons with a group of friends and we often have room for 1 or 2 to fill the party. If you want to learn how to enjoy dungeons we enjoy teaching new people who listen to advice.
