Just pick whatever character you want, DS only turns your char black

But:
-Small scaled characters give you a lager field of view.
-Norn have a somewhat usefull race elite.
-To be honest the look of DS is pretty cool on any char.
-The best gear for necro’s is on Male characters
-The best looks are on human and char.

hope it helps a bit.

oh and when you created your lvl 1 character, grab the professions mask delete the char and grab the other masks too

hope it helps a bit.

Hehe, I got impatient and just went ahead with a Norn before any advice, coz I saw the Become Raven skill..
Glad there’s not much difference, but I’m also glad you liked the Norn =) Thanks

So I’m sitting about to make a Nechro’, and I was wondering how the Death Shroud appears on different races..
I want to be able to try a DS build later down the line, and I wanna pick the best class for the job, looks wise.
I’ve already ruled out Charr, because they look odd, if you ask me, as Nechro’s, and I don’t really want another Asura. Do they look different when shrouded, apart from height differences?

Tooltips suck

in Engineer

Posted by: WolfiKurisu.6894

WolfiKurisu.6894

So many of the Engi’s tooltips are either worded terribly, or, more often, are completely wrong.
Especially with things such as turrets, elixirs and even the simplest grenade explanation is incorrect for all 5 of the grenade skills.
The grenade skills all say “Throw A grenade” “A” grenade. Meaning singular. One.
All grenade skills throw two grenades when used, meaning that the tooltips only show half of what the actual skill would do.
I’ve noticed errors here and there in other professions, but it just makes an unpopular class even less popular since players can’t play when they have to spend half of their time figuring out what the skills actually do.
Quite fitting for an engineer, having to experiment to find results, but it’s stupid.
Please can we have this fixed? It would hardly take 20 minutes for someone to just go in and retype it to match what the skills do. I’d do it myself if I could, but since that’s not gonna happen, can someone just sort it?

It’s so annoying where these things are placed in Queensdale; they always interrupt the Toxic Offshoot events..They run in your way, or get attacked, and proceed to bind everything in a pretty large radius..When I’m the only one doing this event, since everyone else’s on the train, and I’m down while trying to take out a Vet Toxic mob, I don’t appreciate the Oakheart, who’s just been attacked by a Spider, taking his aggression out on me. Why are they there?

Why do you need to level a crafting discipline anyway? You can buy armor really cheaply on the TV (buy greens every 10 levels then buy exotics when you are at lv80, a full exotic set shouldn’t cost more than 8-10gold)

It’s just something which I enjoy. I know it takes 1,000,000,000 times more gold than just buying the most usable items you can, but I dunno, there’s something therapeutic about crafting your own things, if you ask me.

Are Guardians the best tanks?

in Guardian

Posted by: WolfiKurisu.6894

WolfiKurisu.6894

There are no real “tanks” in this game. You will not be taunting, facetanking the brunt of damage, etc.

What a guardian does is provide survivability, to both itself and others, where other classes/groups might perish, the guardian will endure. But you will not be standing toe to toe with a difficult boss, and just standing there, taking damage, and being okay for any significant chunk of time. You are not going to get a classic tank in this game.

If your question is “which of the two classes is more survivable”, then yes, guardian is the answer, barring the exception of that one “unkillable” WVW spec, which is only really applicable in that sphere and is useless (and very, very killable) in PVE.

Thanks =) I’ll try and keep a balance between usefulness and survivability =)

Simple, probably dumb, question. I’ve got a Warrior, and I’ve seen he’s got quite a few nice defensive traits. Does the Guardian do it better, though? I’d assume so, since that’s what Guardians excel at in most MMO’s, but I’ve heard a lot of stories about the Warrior being unnerfed, so I’m just wondering..

I know this game doesn’t really have roles, by the way, I’m on about for fun.

So, when I load up GW2, it goes to the character select screen, and starts playing a song that I’ve saved in a “City” playlist. I haven’t made anything for “MainMenu”.

But my main problem is that the song keeps playing, I assume until it’s over. I started on the character selection screen, and it started. I chose a character, spawned into D’s Reach, still playing. Tele’d to Queensdale, still playing. Tried Crafting, since I’ve a “Crafting” playlist, still playing. Tele’d to that place under Queensdale, the lvl 15-25 area, still playing.

Will the song not change until it finishes?

Edit:
I just logged in again, and this time the music started at the character select screen. After I chose a character it went silent, and it still is..Why so many issues? Halp =(

Edit: And now I’ve made a MainMenu list, it plays that, then when I log in it plays one of my Ambient songs, and then pauses for a while, then replays then same one. Why won’t it go through the list? Or is it because it’s random and I got unlucky?

Am I understanding Burn, correctly?

in Elementalist

Posted by: WolfiKurisu.6894

WolfiKurisu.6894

One D/X ele can maintain burning permanently with drakes breath and reapply easily it removed. The duration stacks 9 times but it’s still just one stack and the magnitude of the burning is I believe counted by the last application. I.e. Ten eles focusing on burning is as good as only one, but if only one ele focuses on burning his contribution will be nullified if the non-condi spec eles burn over his burn.

So if a level 80 were to hit with a 1,000 Burn (I dunno if that’s unbelievably weak or over the top; I’m still new to this game), and then a lvl 3 strolled by and hit with a 20 Burn, all subsequent burns would result in 20 DPS until a different Burn source applied a Burn…Burn?

That’s kind of sucks, actually, especially since I wanted to use Burn for PVE..I guess I could still make use of it in Dungeons though, with a structured team.

Thanks for the info =)

Am I understanding Burn, correctly?

in Elementalist

Posted by: WolfiKurisu.6894

WolfiKurisu.6894

Burning scales with condition damage (and Might stacks as they give +35 power and condition damage): 328 + Condition Damage / 4 per second at lvl 80.

For the stacking, it is even worse: Burning only stacks in duration, even across players. Meaning that if one player is able to keep burning permanently up, all other burns are wasted. The stack-limit is only there to prevent unreasonalbe high durations of burning on one target (>1min), but dps-wise a 10s perma-burn is the same as a 1min perma-burn.

And no, high condition-damage-burns have no priority over low condition-damage burns.

Ah, so it’s not really a decent route to go =/

So each Burn attack which hits counts as a stack until that attack runs out? And all Burn stacks are invisible, but limited to 9? That sucks, but thanks =) I guess I’ll need to put more effort into playing with Fire and Earth to make the most out of the condition stats, so I’m not overly upset =)

Am I understanding Burn, correctly?

in Elementalist

Posted by: WolfiKurisu.6894

WolfiKurisu.6894

Can I just make sure I understand the Burn condition?

The Burn damage is constant, and not skill reliant, in that it doesn’t change; 3 seconds of Burn damage = 3×1 second of Burn damage.

Each player has their own stack, and on each monster/player only 9 total stacks can be applied, meaning 10 Ele’s focusing on Burning is just as useful as 9, correct?

That’s all, thanks =)

So, long range’s always been my job in games. Therefore, I’d really like to enjoy the Ranger class, but the Slot Skills seems to suck so much that I can’t..

I’m willing to get over the fact that I don’t enjoy the pet feature, and I assume I only dislike it due to it being different from other classes, and kinda forced, but the Slot Skills are..Urk!

So there’re:

Shouts: I don’t like pets.
Survival: I don’t plan to get into a situation where I need to survive; my teammates will tanks most of the damage and if the enemy’s at a point where it can attack me then we’ve probably already lost.
Spirits: I don’t think too much of the bonuses they give. All over the forums I see posts about how Hunters need buffs; I assume this is one reason why?
Traps: Once again, at long-range I don’t see how I’d incorporate these fluidly into combat. Similar to the Survival skill’s issues.
Signets: Looks like these are what I’m gonna primarily use, but Signets have always been only 1/3 slots, never the whole build’s revolvement.

I’ve looked at the traits, and they actually look pretty solid, I definitely look forward to increasing my longbow range to 1500.

But yeah, has anyone came up with an effective and fun long-range Ranger playstyle?

rangers are in a bad spot in general atm from what I hear and honestly they deserve a few buffs.

with that said I have not played a ranger so no comment on that.

I checked out their other Weapon Skills, and while they look great, there’re also a lot which you need to be a pet user to get the most out of. I was imagining being some kind of psuedo Thief, inflicting Poison and Blind or something from afar, but it just doesn’t feel as fun. I would make a Necro, but don’t you get basically two pets? Aww no :’(

Warrior w/ Longbow vs Ranger

in Warrior

Posted by: WolfiKurisu.6894

WolfiKurisu.6894

So, I equipped a Longbow on my Warrior for a bit in PVE, and I really got into it. I liked the supporting role I played and the freedom to not have not be relied on to tank.

So, I presumed I’d enjoy the Ranger, but I don’t enjoy the pet feature, since I like to have absolute control over the damage I’m putting out, the weapon skills suck in comparison to the Warrior’s, and by the looks of it so do their slot skills..

Apart from the extra range you get with the weaponry, I don’t see much of a reason to play a Ranger, since Warrior’s can out damage and offer better support through use of Banner and Shout skills. All the Ranger’s Shout skills seem to revolve around the pets, which I’ve mentioned I don’t like.

Any thoughts or reasons on why I shouldn’t delete him and make a ranged Warrior?

WolfiKurisu.6894

nice little asura you got there. i’m pretty sure he’s able to make alot of monsters have a bad day

i’m really sorry to say, but turrets ain’t no real turrets at this state of the game. and there seems to be no effort in ever turning them into turrets.

for example there’s the healing turret, which applies a big instant healing when deployed and should best be overcharged instantly to gain an additional area healing. when doing this you’ll apply a waterfield which should best be used by exploding that same turret right away in that small time gap of that waterfield, this causing additional healing.

what did you get? an instantly exploding turret after creation. wow.

same applies to thumper turret, which can be instantly exploded for a total of 3 blast combo finishers, which is actually pretty powerful, but nowhere near of what you think a turret would work like.

turrets in this game are like instant spells that require several clicks and the ability to press buttons in the right order. (deploy -> overcharge -> explode)
If you’re ok with that, you’ll soon accept it as it is, but that requires thinking outside the box.

Aww, well that kinda sucks =/ On the other hand, I’m only doing PVE, and I’m more of a low level monster grinder, than one to build up and prepare for one massive level’d boss, so I don’t need to be the best around =)

Thanks for the tips though, I guess I’ll need ’em when I take the fight to PVP and WVW =)

I’ve just started playing an Engy, after playing Thief for 3 weeks straight.

I really freakin’ like it…

I play an RTS game called Halo Wars, which is pretty basic, but it’s crucial in that game that you micromanage your units correctly, as this is one of the only real skilful parts which sets 2 players, using the same strategy, apart. This micromanagement seems to apply to Turret-building Engy’s too, in that you have to keep an eye on your turret’s health, almost like units, keep using their abilities when’s necessary, and make sure they’re always in the most useful spot..I’m drooling just thinking about it..

This is also the first time I’ve tried an Asura character, and they’re awesome too. I love how they bounce around for the avoidance roll, and in some way I enjoy their threatening cuteness too. Gotta say, I base my characters around my personality, which is laid back and reserved, so their up their kitten temperament’s a little off, but when I see his happy smiling face I forget all about it =)

Since I never really post anything positive, I think it’s only right I end with some kind of complaint..The first turret you can buy has an ability which claims to shoot bleeding shots. It does not, it causes vulnerability.

From my testing…
Each hit of each storm (regardless of attunement) has a coefficient of approximately 1.15.

Firestorm – 11 hits over 10 seconds, each hit strikes 5 targets within aoe circle.
Ice storm – 18 ice meteors in aoe circle, each meteor strikes 5 targets and chills.
Lightning storm – 36 lightning bolts in aoe circle, each bolt strikes 5 targets.
Sandstorm – 11 hits over 10 seconds, each hit strikes 5 targets within aoe circle and some hits bleed/blind.

I think my largest problem with the tooltips, though, is that they only list the cast+channel time of skills rounded to the nearest 1/4 second, while some of the skills have monstrous aftercasts.

I used your info, and my testing matched too. I think it’s strange how they’ve got so much right about the game, yet it’s little things like this they slip up on. I guess it could be largely down to rebalancing of skills and stuff, and they just haven’t updated the skill’s descriptions as much as they should.

The point of crafting?

in Crafting

Posted by: WolfiKurisu.6894

WolfiKurisu.6894

1. Create certain equipment for lower level characters, such as leather bags.
Though, equipment you create is normally related to that character’s level, so many weapons and armour aren’t viable to pass down.

2. It gets you experience points in a way other than combat/exploration.

3. It’s fun. Biased, sure, but I do enjoy it. It’s got a kind of therapeutic in some weird way.

4. Extends the game and adds a lot of items strictly made for crafting.

5. Saves money (?)

6. Once you’re high enough to make certain stuff, it becomes cheaper to make it then to buy it, so there’s a long-term investment advantage.

Edit: 7. Brings new weapons into the game, such as legendaries, which would otherwise be very, very rare.

However, when you notice that most of the equipment you make quickly becomes redundant since you gain levels through regular play, also you gain levels through crafting which doesn’t help the longevity of your equipment, it doesn’t seem too worth it. Though I will add my level 30 crafted armour carried me all the way past the level 35, 40 and 45 stock items from merchants, there were still perfect alternatives which required less investment on the BLTP.

I’ve got past lvl 200 in Leatherworker and Huntsman, and now I’m just staring at my cash pile wondering how much damage I’m gonna have to do to reach the next, next tier =/

That’s where I originally complained, but to summarise, there’re lots of problems with the description of skills. At first, I thought it was just inconsistency of text, i.e. Bleed damage being displayed as both (10)s as well as 10 seconds.

Then, I noticed some information was missing. As an example, Burning Retreat, an ability for those wielding a Fire Axe, creates a Fire Field, though it doesn’t mention it in the description at all.

Finally, I noticed plain wrong information, such as the Screenshot shows; the Boon supposedly damages enemies..it does not.

It looks unprofessional, unpolished and looks more like what a game in beta would be expected to be like, as opposed to one of the biggest MMO’s available.

It wouldn’t take long, it’d just be nice to have consistency, accuracy, and validity in the text, especially since skills are such a big part of the game, and it shouldn’t be a guessing game as to what they do..

I’ve played 2 classes so far, and in both I’ve found inconsistencies with the “tooltip” information. This isn’t about me wanting to understand everything about the viable skills, it’s about the game looking proper, and less like an unpolished demo after however many years it’s been out.

Glyph of storms is like that because Sandstorm is a swirling thing on the ground so they have to note how often it does damage. Firestorm rains fire from the sky…the animation is obvious that you will know how often it does damage.

I need to disagree with that. Firestorm’s animation shows a lot more than just 11 fireballs coming from the sky. Sure, the larger one’s might be 11 in number, might be, but it’s not illogical to believe the smaller ones could cause damage too.

Also, the Flame Axe’s Burning Retreat ability creates a Fire Field, though no information is given about that in the skill’s description.

So, as an Elementalist you get an Elemental Storm skill. Both the Fire and Earth versions work similarly, in that they pulse 11 times for 10 seconds, and both hit a certain amount of targets.

Only the Earth gives the information that it pulses though, I had to ask around and test for myself how the Fire skill actually worked..

And now, I just unlocked an Earth ability called Rock Barrier which apparently increases my Armour..But of course, it doesn’t say by how much, it’s just vague.

Also, when I’ve activated the Rock Barrier ability, I gain a Boon which tells me that enemies around me will take damage, and I have 5 Rock charges..Enemies do not take damage around me, ArenaNet, and unless other skills make use of these Rock charges, why do you tell me I have them? They’re all shot away as soon as I activate them, so it’s not like I need to know I have 5, since I can tell clearly whether I have 5 or 0.

I really enjoy this game, I only started playing around 3 weeks ago, but when it comes to the skills’ descriptions, they’re very, very unpolished.

I’ve also noticed inconsistencies with my Thief. Some skills say “Bleed (5s) 40 Damage”, and others would present it as “Bleed 40 Damage over 5 seconds”.
