^in other games, I’d agree with you, but in GW2, I don’t. This is because in other games, you can slot out skills, so you can have very situational skills.

But in GW2, you can’t, so every single skill needs some sort of a general use because otherwise you end up with skills that just clog up your bar most of the time, like now.

Then you got the case of some skills which just have zero use whatsoever.

The problem is that Anet has set up this really rigid skill system, so the full weight of balancing everything perfectly falls straight on them instead of partially on players to adjust their builds, and it gives them less wiggle room for problems. (you could argue that it backfired on them)

Nobody in PvP uses axe offhand…. its an universally undesired weapon and the nerf to dancing daggers happened more than a year ago.

Just out curiosity tho, What would be some PvE balance changes you would make?

Put dancing dagger’s coefficient to 0.75 for PvE.
Increase damage on axe #4 for PvE.
Axe no5 adds periodic vulnerability.
Dagger #3 on thief gives Fury (because honestly I don’t see anyone using this for power builds in PvP either, and Fury doesn’t affect conditions).

etc etc

So you guys know, we already split some skills. And, what’s most pertinent to the current thread, we plan to do this even more.

When we first shipped, it was awesome to have a lot of the balance be the same between PvE/WvW/PvP. But, as you guys have really started to push the game types to their limits, classes and specs that work in one areas of the game are sometimes ineffectual in others.

Due to this, we’ll have to do more splitting of skills to better balance the various areas of the game.

TL:DR – We already do this, and we’ll be using it even more in order to balance the different areas of the game effectively.

Splitting a few skills is different that actually changing the basic mechanics of the game and having a PvE-centric balance update. It will only cause issues in WvW (which is a hybrid PvE/PvP) and in PvP also.

I am mostly a PvE player, although I have recently been very happy playing WvW. I feel what is being asked will only kitten the game even more.

A PvE-centric balancing update isn’t changing entire mechanics. It would be things like ’let’s increase the skill coefficient for dancing dagger to 0.75 so people use it’. Changing game mechanics isn’t balance, it’s a system overhaul.

It would be since, UNLIKE GW1 which had a split between PvE and PvP.

If you just balance for PvE there would be a huge affect in WvW (unintended) and also in PvP.

You would be changing mechanics, because you are stressing one over the other, which is not the intent of this game – A.Net values ALL PARTS of the game equally, even if you don’t.

Just for PvE, like how CnD hits for 33% less in PvP. I believe the original nerf on DD was mostly so that thieves can’t just throw a knife and destroy rangers.

They should not be linked. They need to be separate. Let me give you an example to display why.

Confusion: it’s a mechanic which forces the target to make a decision: attack and eat damage or not attack. NPCs don’t make decisions, they aren’t alive, so this mechanic is just moot in PvE and there’s no way you can balance ur under one umbrella: it’s either going to be the strongest DoT in the game because mobs always eat the damage or one of the weakest because mibs don’t attack enough. Pick your poison.

They are linked, you cannot balance one w/o affecting the other – A.Net has said that many times. GW1 was exactly the same. If you change one you change the other. Sure you can change a skill or two for PvP/PvE difference but the basic mechanics are the same

The only way you can have them not linked is if they are on separate servers with separate characters and that will never happen.

Then how do you balance confusion for PvE then? Currently it’s useless. How do you make it not the same thing as bleed?

Well, conditions are useless in PvE currently and confusion is a condition. It is an razor’s edge type of balancing. That is what A.Net is working on.

How would it be balanced even if conditions are useful? I politely ask you to fully read my comment. You cannot balance something which doesn’t work on a mechanical level.

Shields, I would like to like shields more in this open world environment. There are so many nice shields.

Agree.

I do think changes to pvp skills should not be connected to pve skills (and iirc there are a few differences for balance purposes). But I honestly like where my characters are at in pve at the moment. (I don’t have an engi or necro though at 80)

I like where they are in the sense that they have a few weapons to choose from, but then you look at stuff like dancing dagger, you start wondering why can’t I just replace it with an utility skill. Or you look at how you can’t use half your weapons without being dead weight, then you start seeing the holes.

^ this isn’t about dungeons, it’s about PvE in general. For example, why would you ever want to use offhand warrior axe other than to tag mobs and farm (in which case I’d just switch to a LB and F1) given that warriors have full fury uptime and 4/5 are low DPS otherwise?

Since most of their updates are about PvE, I think it’s time to strengthen the core game on PvE as well.

But if you want maximal DPS, anything more than 1 warrior is a waste.

Before everyone jumps with ‘no one cares about PvE because it’s faceroll’ or something, let me explain myself.

At least in PvP/WvW, all weapons and skills have some sort of an use. In PvE, half the weapons available to classes, and often a lot of skills on the viable weapons are useless. For example, when was the last time anyone in PvE used offhand axe on warriors apart from to look cool, or used Churning Earth on eles in combat?

Also, there’s been a lot of changes for PvP and WvW which dragged PvE into the crossfire just because they were universal, and in the process doing a lot if damage to build diversity and usefulness of skills. E.g. The whooping 50% nerf to dancing dagger which made DD utterly useless in PvE.

So, can we have a PvE-focused balancing update for once?

The reason you use Focus instead of Dagger for Dungeons is a bit hard to explain, but it really entails going through both sets and realizing that, at the end of the day, other than being slightly more damaging and mobile, OH Dagger doesn’t really offer that much compared to Focus. Given, in PvP where players have far less health and mobility is key, OH Dagger can be of great use. However, an extra 10k Firegrab and the damage from Ring of Fire is really about it in terms of more damage. Churning Earth is a straight up DPS loss because of the long channel. Focus also has faster and more reliable blast finishers thanks to Earth 4 and Water 5, so in terms of Might Stacking, it’s better.

An invulnerability on Obsidian Flesh is really strong, just because of the nature of the encounters the game has. PvE enemies hit slow and predictably and rarely do mass, unavoidable damage. When they DO hit a lot, it’s generally for a short burst of time. So timing an Obsidian Flesh because you know that you’re about to encounter what would be a lot of damage, and then just switching back to Air for more damage generally ends up being quite useful.

In general, MH Dagger builds take advantage of Fresh Air so they can swap attunements, so you can still use the defensive skills of the Focus in Water (a daze), Air (projectile block and a very long KD), and Earth (Cleanse and an Invuln), all while still being able to DPS with the autoattack of Lightning Whip, since that’s your main source of damage.

Also, Scepter has terrible sustained damage and it breaks my heart when I see someone use it in dungeons without ever using a conjure. It’s really low. Like super, super, super low compared to the damage of Lightning Whip, Lightning Hammer, or Lava Font spamming. However, because Scepter has two low CD blast finishers as opposed to MH Dagger’s one blast finisher, it’s better to use it for Might Stacking, then dropping down Lightning Hammer and attacking with that. However, to be honest, for most people’s play, I strongly feel that a Dagger/Focus build is the best thing to play with casual groups.

I don’t know. If I knew what was coming, it’s not a problem. I can dodge it easily with a dodge or a evade skill easily. When I get killed, its ddwn to basically 2 things:

1. Did not see an attack coming, boom dead. I probably won’t have time to OF for that lol.
2. Heavy pressure by a ton of mobs, in which I don’t think 4 seconds will make much of a difference.

OF does seem like a very good skill for resing just-downed allies though.

Churning earth blasts at the end. Dagger has a bit more damage but no defensive utility, using churning earth in the middle of battle is quite dangerous as well and it’s very likely you’ll have to interrupt the channel. If you want more damage and don’t care about utility you’re better off with a s/f or s/d conjure build.
I suppose d/d is ‘good enough’ just as you say, it’s just that for every purpose in pve there is a better weapon set than d/d.

Going /f is not really about min-maxing and more about staying alive when pugging/soloing high lvl content. If somebody kittens up I can take care of myself, you don’t have that when you’re running a different weapon set.

I’m just looking at focus and thinking, apart from Swirling Winds, I don’t really see anything I can save my kitten with.

I mean, Obsidian Flesh looks nice but it looks like a ‘oh crap’ button instead of a rotational mitigation, and going ‘oh crap’, switching to earth, then hitting OF means I’d likely be dead.

Is there any reason why conjures work better with a scepter?

Don’t want to sound too sarcastic, that’s not my point at all, but to get 2000-3000 gold is quite an accomplishment, isn’kitten I hate farming, I do totally have utmost respect to those who crafted their legendaries, but I was doing a lot in order to overcome my hatred towards farming in order to collect 3000 gold for my legendary. More than farming I hate crafting, so I hope you do understand me.

I stand corrected, making your own legendaries is much more fun and less grind than straight up farming for 2000-3000 gold. You get to explore the world maps, kill tons of people in wvw for badges. Beside people rather rmt 3000g than farm for gold nowaday.

They are reminding players that you can convert cash into gold legitimately in order to combat the spike in gold sellers.

Sorry, do not agree. Anyone who is going to buy gold illegitimately is going to do so to save money, and will not change their actions based on ads from ANet. I’ve played this game since launch and I can see the path to gold get more and more narrow every single patch. Granted, this is a B2P game, and they are relying on the gem shop sales to fund future stuff. Fine. But let’s call it as it is shall we?

I am calling it like it is. The correlation is between gold seller activity and ANet announcements.

Gold sources versus sinks is a separate issue that has been very well balanced so far. It seems like it hurts a bit right now since they just removed a passive (i.e. bad) source of gold generation (champ bags) and the prices haven’t adjusted downwards yet to reflect the reduction in gold supply.

Uuuuhhh isn’t buying gems to convert to gold another form of passive gold generation which will not help adjust prices downward?

Well, we don’t know. There’s the other side of it, converting gold to gems which might balance itself out.

But they sound really desperate with that tagline at every notice…

Anet should use a f2p/b2p subscription model similar to swtor. They can make revenue with gem store items, but they won’t have to rely on strictly the gem store due to a strong dedicated base of players paying $15 a month. Subscribers should get discounts at the gem store and other perks. With Anet securing a consistent flow of income they should be able to afford the additions and modifications to GW2 that we have been asking for.

I specifically left SWTOR because their changed subscription system made the F2P people second class citizens who couldn’t play the game. I would still be playing it had they correctly implemented the F2P model like GW2 did.

I would prefer a sub model like TSW’s more. SWTOR pretty much still runs on a P2P model because if you;re a F2P player, there’s so many restrictions it ends up like a single player game for you.

OH Axe for Warrior is completely useless in PvE… so… I guess OH Dagger is better if you compare it to Warrior’s OH Axe ;3

Offhand Dagger has some mobility and a CC, as well as some decent burst and another fire field. It’s certainly not a completely terrible choice. I just think that in many cases you’ll find the invulnerability and projectile block on Focus to be more relevant in harder content.

Also, the mobility of OH Dagger is better in open world PvE. I’d really only take focus if I was in a dungeon or getting ready for a hard fight.

In 90% of the dungeons you would do normally, it consists of stack stack stack>FGS>instakill. So… I guess we don’t need that reflect lol.

Offhand axe does…occasionally have its uses. Sort of. Like for tagging mobs.

With the condition build I used to run I’d use 3-4 death blossoms and some other skills to stack 20+ stacks of bleeding easily and reliably for a pretty good duration.
All that you said is true about death blossom but its base bleed duration and the thing that they are 3 bleeds and not single target makes it quite nice for stacking bleeds.

That’s the problem. It’s great for a condi build but utterly useless for a power build, and hybrid setups still isn’t a thing. So whatever you do, you’ll get useless skills on your bar.

Ah I see, Well I’m running a hybrid celestial build right now with D/D, I use Dagger-3 sometimes but the auto-attack is better and I’d rather save my initiative for other more usefull skills while running hybrid. Like no.2 for the extra damage which you’ll need if y’r running hybrid sustain and dagger no. 5 since stealth isn’t the absolute core of my hybrid build… Dagger no. 4 is pretty useless too in my opinion.

Dagger no 4 WAS very powerful when there’s exactly 2 targets (I think it had a coefficient of 1, so two people would mean you effectively full heartseeker both of them), but was nerfed to the ground a year ago with a (lol) 50% nerf that the forum that most players though ridiculous but was never changed.

But tanks and healers won’t ever be in this game as a requirement. You can bring one, we had an ele water healer on a FotM run once, made things a lot smoother in a PuG actually, but you dont need one.

I don’t really why all the hate in the replies here. Stacking in a corner and facerolling should never be the best tactic for a boss fight, ever. Stacking can be a tactic, but it should involve actively keeping mobs trapped in the stack and NPCs should have ways to counter it.

Why is this a problem?

A single zerker GS warrior can do 10k+ DPS under perfect conditions, on a heavy target. That’s 600k+ over a minute, putting your necro in the dust, and warriors aren’t even the top power DPS class.

Until whatever is being fought drops you to the dirt because you’re in melee range bringing your damage down to “nonexistent”. Even if a condi necro gets downed, they’re still dealing damage.

Now then, take your zerker garbage back to the class forums so we can bring the thread back to the discussion of how the game is crippling a perfectly viable playstyle because of arbitrary limits based on “processing” limits.

You aren’t. Your bleeds will wear off and then you stop doing damage.

Now if you can stop using insults as the basis of your arguments for a second, what do you plan to do then? Just leave conditions as it is and basically remove half the combat mechanics from high-end PvE?

The cap is so nibble to death by cats (thank you Londo) isn’t a viable way to defeat a boss.

Why is that a problem anyway!?

Given the hp and other things a boss has, even a full berserker build will have to “nibble it to death”. How often a berserker build can one- two- or three-shot a boss to death?

You do understand the capacity for damage that Condi builds are able to achieve, right? When geared correctly at “endgame”, a necro that is able to consistantly, and solo, maintain a 25 stacks of bleeding on a target will inflict over 280,000 damage over a single minute. And that’s just from bleeds alone. Combined with Parasitic Contagion (Close to Death does kitten-all for Condi Damage), that’s self-healing of 14,000 without touching a heal skill. Adding in direct damage and other incidental conditions, you’re looking at minimum of 50,000 damage.

And that’s one necro. Imagine 5-10 of them if conditions were not affected by a duration/stack cap.

Edit: Lulz. I forgot about the disgusting damage spread caused by epidemic.

Why is this a problem?

A single zerker GS warrior can do 10k+ DPS under perfect conditions, on a heavy target. That’s 600k+ over a minute, putting your necro in the dust, and warriors aren’t even the top power DPS class.

It’s useless!

If you heard something it was me rolling my eyes.

You can reposition yourself just as fast and more reliably by moving.
Whirl finishers are one of the most common finishers out there and is next to useless on anything but a light field in PvE.
The 3 hits sum in physical power to about the same thing as a single first-chain autoattack.

warrior is clearly not the easiest class in this game.
Rangers are.
i’m not sure if we play the same game.

LOL.

We’re definitely not playing the same game.

Unless you’re referring to killing trash mobs in PvE? That I’ll give to you. Otherwise, you’re way off the mark.

I don’t see how adrenaline is poorly implemented. Getting a free 15% crit chance and 15% damage modifier is pretty nice, which can then be expended into a powerful skill (GS aside), no? Maybe GS needs a change, but killshot is certainly viable. It’s called blowing your opponent’s negation and then bursting them when they have none left. This is a strategy that is employed by many other classes, often necessary to actually kill the warrior.

I’ve played everything to 80 in ascended except engi and necro, and so far I can safely say it’s been the easiest class to roll in both PvP and PvE.

It’s fine in PvP, but in PvE, where everything basically more or less comes down to ‘does this increase my DPS?’ or ‘is this worth losing x% DPS over?’ for the current content, when the answer is no almost always to both questions, you got a problem.

Seeing alot of other MMO elements here, for that matter I am gonna reccomend looking at black desert character creation. I am not advertising this in any way just sharing a link for fellow players to see; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TP4L1vHfpk

That game looked amazing until they said it’ll have a RNG-based enchanting process that can end in your items going poof. Killed for me completely.

The hidden truth about the "Chaos of Lyssa"

in Festival of the Four Winds

The reason why ANet won’t do anything about flippers hijacking markets is because it benefits them greatly to see these higher prices. Remember that gold as a currency is tied to gems which can be purchased for real money. They hope to drive new players into purchasing gold in order to catch up which is exactly why they keep on nerfing popular farm spots.

Unfortunately this short-sighted greed is having an extremely negative effect on the game as a whole. Short of getting extraordinarily lucky a new player will have no way to ever compete on the market. They’re strangling their own game trying to squeeze a few more dollars out of it.

I don’t agree. The best result for the game and therefor the best result for ArenaNet is for the markets to work as efficiently as possible (usually). Fortunately, the nature of the trading post provides a lot of natural force for markets to work efficiently. While nothing is 100% perfect, the large majority of every part of the game’s economy runs incredibly efficiently and we put a lot of effort into making sure that they remain that way.

Do you consider the precursor and Chaos of Lyssa market working “efficiently”?
I guess quite efficient for the flippers.

Add T6 mats in there too. Their prices are hilarious.

The problem is, what do you want them to do? Manually control the prices of everything through supply?

Do you want to play the game and buy things knowing that at a whim, and t a constant whim at that, Anet will send shockwaves throughout the economy? I sure don’t.

As much I’d love to put Evon Gnashblade on a leash, it would look awfully silly.

Does ANet even read this forum?

I do think someone at ANet reads it on occasion. But nothing really comes of it.

And to be fair, I think we’ve sort of reached a point where people are complaining about all classes equally.

I.e. the imbalances now aren’t really within the different classes but rather within individual mechanics (like boon-spam, condition-spam etc.). And getting precise feedback on stuff like that is difficult because players tend to focus very much on a 1v1 experience in PvP.

At this point, I don’t think its really that much about class balancing between classes anymore. It’s more about balancing and adjusting within a class’s set of skills.

For example, in PvE in any competitive non-EA build, warriors will never use their class mechanic: that really shouldn’t happen. Looking at thieves, no one ever uses p/p, that needs to be sorted out.

I think we all want to see a bit more build diversity. I think we all want to be able to customise our skill bars.

But I don’t think that’s going to be possible because it’ll be a ton of work for ANet. So, why don’t we take the next best thing?

(This is pretty much ripped straight off ESO, because of all the stuff they screwed up on, this feature was actually very good)

What’s going to happen is that, all your weapon skills are still going to be locked in place, but you’ll be able to select some of their attributes to better fit your build/playstyle.

For example, on Death Blossom, you can either have it either:

1. Lose the bleed damage and do more direct damage (to use as power-based AoE).
2. Lose its direct damage and pile on more bleeds (for condi builds)
3. Make it lose its bleed but extend the dodge to 3/4 seconds (to use as an evasive skill)

or of course, just leave it as it is.

  • General lack of QoL content changes/ additions that the playerbase usually expects from MMOs (attention, this does not makes GW2 a “different” game, just emptier on the eyes of many). Example: Dueling, Housing, etc;
    .

Dueling ? Then don’t forget other QoL stuff like
-the holy trinity
-Open world PvP
-mounts
-raids with new gear tier every 2 months
-new level cap every year

However i would call that WiP (why i play) stuff instead QoL. Minus the housing, thats the only thing i also want.

The trinity, open world PvP, raids and level cap are not QoL stuff…. they are core design philosophies.

But dueling is Qol ? Yeah maybe because it destroys the quality of others live .. lol .. but that would do open PvP also.

And even housing is not QoL .. its just another design thing to keep players busy.

So no .. nothing of that all is Qol … thats also why i wrote it fat. That are all just the same requests some people post again each week for various reasons.

If there’s open world PvP, I can get ganked as soon as I step out of DR. That’s forcefully changing my gameplay. Not QoL.

If there was dueling, I can refuse to duel. Doesn’t forcefully change my game play. QoL.

I’ve already bought them and I can foresee a nerf coming for sure… ^^ :-[
As to where the nerfs are going to hit, it’s definitely the might duration and the bonus might be changed to 5% instead of 7%.

Didn’t Anet just buff the damage from 5 to 7%? It would seem silly (‘we don’t do whack-a-mole balancing’) to just change it straight back.

Also, it’s far from overpowered in PvE, so I don’t see why the heck they would change it there as well. But then again, Anet seems adamant on balancing the game on PvP but make most of the updates in PvE.

Uh, it was more than just 5%-> 7%. AFAIK this rune used to be bugged so the 5% doesn’t even trigger if you have a might stack. It also used to give less power, less might duration, and less % to trigger might upon getting hit.

The rune pretty much got an exponential increase in terms of usefulness. It went from never used to always used.

It’s far from always used for PvE. For a start, if you can hold 90%+ HP enough and you’re in an organised speedrun which holds 25 might, Scholar’s better.
