The wrench kit is underwhelming in pretty much every regards. It is supposed to create the TF2 engineer style of play, but it simply fails to deliver due to high cooldown on non-scaling turrets, and because the heal is pathetic.
So why not make wrench a bit more of a utility kit? An engineer should be at his creative best with his creative tool around.
- Make the wrench lowers cooldown for each tools (including turrets, elixirs, as well as toolbelts) by x second for every single action you use (can be improved to reduce more cooldown, etc, by traits).*
Taking into account that your swing animation is still the slowest of all weapons, it still wouldn’t be overpowered by any means.
There are a lot of kinks to work out for Engies, that’s for sure.
Engineers are and forever will be a support class. Despite what ANet say about abolishing the holy trinity—Engineers are the healers. We are the only class that simply is not made to DPS.
So with or without condition damage, I don’t think our DPS output will ever rival other classes. It’s just not meant to be.
Hope they finish the workaround soon.
And while they’re at it, they might as well throw in cosmetic skins for kits too.
Sweet sweet skin.
It would be an interesting “single target melee DPS” kit for Engy, I suppose. At the very least, it looks wicked.
Also, has anyone else noticed the #1 skill and flame turrets are both incapable of aiming up/down? I used to think it was just the animation, but they actually don’t seem able to change direction vertically.
Didn’t realize that. But I know that Flame Jet (slot 1 skill) seems to be big enough that it will hit targets above you. The graphics doesn’t seem to change, but the cone itself does seem to.
Upon further reflection, I think it might have to do with our “persistence”. i.e. turrets, and long lasting buffs, and also the fact that entities in this game do not get removed when they are killed. For example, the various houses/caches are still hanging around and your turrets will still try to shoot them.
I think it is possible that the aggro never get reset on engy after some enemies die, so everything will spawn thinking “hey, that’s engy still has 10k aggro left on him since when I die last time”.
Doesn’t appear very smart to attempt to start a discussion against a build in general based on one single fight with one single mob.
I have used turrets on tough mobs. There is a bug with the trait for now, but when it was working you can place all of your turrets by target and not drop them in front of you.
I remember pics posted with turrets placed on shrubs and other unreachable locations and threads asking if that was working as intended. The devs posted and said yes, if you can get a turret there, then it belongs there. Picking your ground and placing your turrets in strategic locations can make all of the difference in the world.
If you run up and plop your rifle turret right in front of the mob, you have no real reason to complain if he destroys it. What does your comments about the thumper turret have to do with what happened to the riffle turret? Did you have some expectation that the thumper turret gets aggro by default? If you lay all your hopes into assume you can guess where a champions agro will go, you can’t hardly be upset if it turns out you made an inaccurate assumption.
So the target ground turret trait is borked? and when it wasnt, you could put turrets on rocks and stuff? thats pretty cool actually, good tips for when they fix it haha.
Go ahead and give it a try. If the place truly is “unreachable” (cannot be accessed easily via pathfinding) by a PvE target, the target becomes invincible to all your damage (that’s both YOU and your turrets) until you lose aggro. Also, they will still aggro to you. So while you can’t touch it, the enemy will still pound your face in.
Careful what you wish for.
They need a Bayonetta skin.
Maybe one that looks like a sawed-off shotgun too.
Seriously? Of all the broken skill, non-functioning traits, and abilities that are broken, this is what you guys want to attempt to push the devs to invest their time in?
I picked Engineer because I want to look cool. Let me look the part.
And like others have said—I think they can do more than one thing at a time.
Hammer would be nice. Bows..well..if they put a bit of a steampunk twist on bows, I’m all for it.
Engy just gets lots of weapons via kits, which is kinda nifty, I guess. At least they are very unique.
It would be really nice if the hitbox for medkit items (especially the status curing one) is MUCH larger. It doesn’t provide massive healing on its own, but cleverly prepping the battlefield with them can be a real boon to your team, which is really nice.
But what gets me is that the kitten thing sometimes just doesn’t hit me when it should (while sidestepping while also walking forward, for example). It would also be very nice if it hits me while I’m standing still.
Oh, and the first medkit is bugged. Trying to use it as soon as you switch to medkit will put it on a 4 seconds cooldown without dropping the thing. Fix pl0x?
ddoi.9264 is correct.
It seems that Engy just gains more aggro due to the nature of the class. Other classes deal damage. Nifty.
Engy deals LOTS of AoE damage, while also HEALING. I think AoE damage just inherently gets more aggro than single target to begin with. So combining those factors, Engies will almost always gain more aggro.
The Med Kit speed potion is stackable. You can lay down 3 of them before the first one is used up. That will give you about 30 seconds. If you keep laying down more every cooldown, you can get roughly 1 minute of Swiftness.
Using the trait that gives you Might while you have Swiftness..it’s pretty much prema Might during a PvP match. Good times.
- I really wish that the WvWvW resource nodes would have special function, giving your team’s NPC a boost, etc, reinforcement, more supplies to boost your constructions, etc. That’d be kinda fun.
- Level scaling is nifty.. but if my gear doesn’t scale, I’m screwed anyway. It’s not fun or productive to fight someone when I have 200DPS on them, and they have 600DPS on me. In old WoW BGs, lowbies contribute by running around being cannon fodders, gathering resources, or acting as intelligence units. Granted it wasn’t the best system, but it does give you a sense of contribution. In GW2…since there is none of the little subquests in WvWvW, you can’t do anything at all.
- What I would like most, is a complete tutorial of WvWvW—-OUTSIDE OF THE INSTANCE. A LOT of people end up standing around trying to get a hang of the thing and clogging up the queue instead of fighting. I do that too, honestly. And I still feel guilty to this day. (Worse yet, I haven’t even read the whole tutorial, because I know I was clogging up the queue for way too long)
I think it literally increases the chance you get for better drops—blue/green/other quality drop, instead of the normal white vendor trash. Same goes for rare® items from gathering nodes, like the gems from mineral nodes.
I see that prices fluctuate..but based on what? Does the price go up when lots of people are buying Jewel? Does that kind of “supply vs demand” even work for something with unlimited supply? How would inflation be in the future? Is there a cap? Isn’t it a double edged sword, when 3 years from now you could see that Jewel price dropped like a rock, and the 1nt3rW3BZ would start accusing GW2 of being a dead game, despite the game probably still going very strong?
I really wish I can use the harpoon gun skin for it…T-T
I think it would be great if “quick casting” while your mouse in pointing over a target would change to the mouseover target (IF your current target is not within say, 40deg arc in front of you—then you’re probably not trying to shoot it anyway).
Flamethrower is power base during the first few hits. The final hit causes a burn condition, which is improved by condition damage.
Caution: kits do not scale from power/precision/condition damage from weapon slot.
Hello, fellow Engies.
I’ve been enjoying Engy quite a bit. He’s fun, he’s full of tricks, and he has turrets.
Except realistically, I only have room for 1 turret on my skill bar. Considering that they don’t scale, I suppose most people wouldn’t put too many of them onto their bars either. So then, what is your favorite turret to use?
I have only unlocked the tier 1 turrets so far. I have been using Rifle turrets so far due to its low cooldown, but I’m thinking of changing to the meatier (plus better CC) fire turret. Also..I’m sick of having the kitten rifle turret trying to attack invisible targets, or aggroing crap from half the map away for no apparent reason.
Any suggestions + pros/cons for each turret? I’m guessing Rifle is a nobrainer, offering middle ground in power/cooldown/ease of use. But what of the other ones?
Question about the FT: How is crit calculated, and does the crits from FT proc traits/etc?
Engy Flamethrower should ignite every 2 hits & more suggestions

As far as I know, the Flamethrower makes 5 attacks over the course of 2 seconds (per activation). I’m sorry if this is inaccurate, but there doesn’t seem to be much information out there, and my latency is rather high, so it is hard to get a feel for things. But I think I have used it enough to get a good feel for it.
1. The Flamethrower should ignite every 2 or 3 hits, instead of just on the last hit. The Burn damage and period only put its damage on par with other weapons. If you somehow miss that last hit (latency, skill interrupted, dodging, etc), you lose a LOT of damage.
2. The Flamethrower should not acquire target. It’s basically an AoE cone anyway, so there is no need for the weapon to even acquire target, other than to create a hassle when you fire the 2nd weapon skill (the explosive shot).
3. The blind (Smoke Bomb) is…very lackluster. Yes, it is an AoE, but it only lasts against 1 attack. For it’s CD, I think it should last a bit more than that. I understand that it is supposed to be used mainly for when you are anticipating 1 incoming large hit, and that’s fine. But kitten #8230;that’s pretty situational.
4. Make the Napalm Wall position/direction depend on when you begin casting, not at the end of cast. Chances are you will be moving around a lot as a Pyro, and having the fire area changing makes it incredibly hard to use.
5. More skins for the FT please.
My only problem with engineer tanking..
High latency (playing from outside of the US) makes it kitten near impossible to do.
@Deified.7520
I think that’s kind of the point. Engies, unlike other classes, are more traditional sort of hybrid. You can tailor your skills/equips/traits to be extremely proficient at one thing at a time. Other classes has a bit of everything rolled into each build, but all of their builds ultimately do the same. Guardians may spec for more DPS, but their ultimate purpose will still be defensive, etc. Engy, however, can tank, or be a ranged DPS, or be a CCer. Just not all things at the same time.
When playing Engy, keep in mind that he IS a Team Fortress 2 character, not Guildwars 2 character.
To be successful with the Flamethrower Kit, you must first lose your gender identity. Possibly carry a purse too.
Then you have to learn to laugh like a maniac. If you have a programmable keyboard or something, be sure to bind a “mmfff ffff phhh mmmphh” on it.
Next, you have to learn about terrain. Flamethrower has a good bit of utility, but it does have pretty low damage.. unless the enemy stays in the flame wall for the duration—then it’s outright the highest damage kit.
Here’s a trick that I picked up from Ragnarok Online—vertical wall. Cast the wall to your side (take into account that the wall will still be set perpendicular from you at the time of your cast finishing, not when you start casting, so take your movement into account). This will create a long line that the opponent must run through to get to you.
Once they do that, blow them out ONTO the flame (you can pick the direction to blow the enemy). If you’re a good TF2 player, do consider a PUFF AND STING, using the technique outlined by XelNigma above. Then blind them the next time they’re up in your face. Rinse, repeat.
Feel free to use your toolbelt/turrets/kits for more CC.
Lastly, pray that ANet will eventually release a Pyrovision Goggle for you. Or any gas mask will suffice, really.
Dear ANet. Since you’re so hell bent on making Engy the all-TF2-roster class… we need a kit for The Heavy.
And a Scout bat would be nice too, but I can make do with Rifle + quick running trait.
Annnddd maybe Demoknight..but that’s not a real class anyway.
Oh, and please make Pyrovision goggle while you’re at it.
I see a good amount of all classes on my server (Eredon Terrace). Thieves seems to be the rarest there (at least in Queensdale) but not by a lot. Engies have been thinning out a whole lot now..I think people just realized that they’re purely support class and left for greener pasture.
Why are people so afraid of lfg tools anyway? Why can’t you just talk to people once you’re already grouped up? I find that spamming “LFG/LFM + [required spec]” can hardly be called social activity.
Engy has been the most fun so far for me, but I did not get far with my other characters. The unique kits that they have are just awesome.
The problem…Engy kinda looks crappy. T-T
I don’t think it’s about anything in particular—that’s just the nature of the game.
Sure, there is a pretty decent PvE game thrown in, but GW at heart is a PvP game. It’s almost like asking why Counter Strike is so focused on PvP when you can also play bots. Well…the game is just made that way. It’s quite arbitrary, really.
…I know Guardians are kind of like Paladins, and I usually like the “holy warrior” theme..
but man, I stopped playing Guardians because my special move is called “Virtues”…
seriously, man…
Ah, clones..the reason I gave up my Mesmer.
I wanted so badly to play DWsword Mesmer. But man oh man, that is a horrible build. Hit like wet noodle, lack of good heal, and you don’t even get clones to help you (until like OP said, spec for it).
Sometimes it really annoy me. I guess I should’ve realized that Engineer is modeled quite a bit after the TF2 Engy (less the hard hat..I WANT MY HARD HAT ANET!), which is basically camp an area, and hold the position. That’s kinda nifty. I like being the support player, but it’s a real pain in the rear when I have to solo sometimes.
This is pure speculation, but I think it is a bug that of things not dropping combat properly. Or maybe healing has aggro, who knows?
One thing I notice though, is that after clearing a group of mob, the respawn WILL charge me from across the map. I had a couple of people already who was quite surprised to see mobs aggroing on me (even quest mobs) for no apparent reason. The bear quest in Queensdale, for example. I was sitting there, minding my own business when the bear spawned, and proceeded to ignore 5 other people in the area and went for me…5 times in a row. And I wasn’t even sitting that close to the spawn point. (I was trying to chat to a friend, but the kitten bear kept coming for me every time it spawned!)
First, I play from Asia. And hellll, engy is a real killer when there is high latency.
I see a good amount of Asians in the game. Close to 10% of people who plays during peak time (considering GMT+7) are Asians on my server. And considering that there is no real organized forums, I don’t think that is in any way coordinated—the population is likely to be very evenly spread.
I spent a bit of time with my warrior, and that is all good. It can be hard to dodge things or timing a combo, but I can at least take some hits.
But when I’m playing Engie, I need to drop turrets, switch kits, and kite. The nasty part is the extra second tagged on for every action I do. Grenades becomes impossible to use on dry ground, and my favorite healing (medkit) takes close to 8 seconds to use everything. By the time I drop all the items, my first medkit is usually recharged—that’s how bad it is.
I know there is no subscription in this game, hence no incentive to create new server. But hey—we Asians are well known lovers of microtransaction (and unfortunately, bots). Giving us good experience means we will probably end up buying a ton of stuff too, instead of just leaving the game!
I’d say you’re area control, very much like TF2 Engy.
Engies can create zones where you team are highly advantageous. As long as your team is willing to take a queue from you (they don’t), they could gain some real advantage.
For example, I could easily lay out 10 medkits in an area, and as long as we are fighting there—hoowee.
I’m pretty low level (20-ish) and I’m rocking twin turrets, medkit, and flamethrower kit. The flamethrower is just there for the looks..I only use rifles.
Hope this doesn’t hit a taboo topic..but why not just code it in?
I know GW isn’t a AAA-A budget game like WoW, but that game had completely redid its UI 3 times now?
Maybe they can make the appearance option a micro-transaction thing. I wouldn’t mind that. But if they do go that route, I hope that there would be MANY options to choose from.
I want my TF2 medic looks, and my 00 Riser look as well. Yum.
Someone told me before that they DO get boosted by power. Just..not out of weapons. (Or did I get that confused with kits? If I do then sorry) It seems that only power from other slots (helm, gloves, etc) will boost your the direct damage portion?
As far as I know, none of the kits seems to scale. So I’m wondering, how do they fair late game?
For that matter, what exactly in an engineer’s arsenal can scale? (Apart from equipped weapons, which I think you shouldn’t be using anyway) Only turrets?
I have asked around (and tested somewhat) the medkit toolbelt, and it seems to offer very low heal, and have absolutely no scaling. It also take a long time to heal yourself, because you need to switch weapons over and over to reap the full benefit of the item.
It felt very underpowered.
Then I pondered it a bit more. And I realized…maybe THIS is the healing option with best throughput for Engies? Those of you with lots of experience, please feel free to drop some advice. I could use all the help I can get.
Firstly, the kitten thing doesn’t scale. It seems to heal about 1500HP at level 80 (from going randomly into PvP). So you can screw trying to get +heal item. You might as well focus elsewhere.
Secondly, it has really low cooldown, and you can drop a crap ton of them before they expire. Now don’t you think THAT is interesting?
So I tried it out for a bit, and lo and behold—as long as you’re a fidgety, micro-freak, the medkit has absolutely insane healing throughput. I tried dropping the medkits before a fight begins, then switch to it every few seconds to drop more and more. I can have piles of these babies lying around everywhere. It’s like I’m in a regen field—everywhere I kite, I’m getting healed. Everywhere my teammate goes, they get healed. It’s awesome! Sure, each heal is rather small. But with good positioning and timing, it can be used at the right time to save your life. I can even roll over 3 or 4 packs at once for a large burst of healing. Good times.
I’m going to play around with it a bit more.
Grenades hit really hard. And yes, I believe it is the only actual offensive option that Engies have.
My only problem with it is weapon switching all the time can be freakishly annoying. Oh, and the clickety-click is annoying too.
I was going to make a medium-sized rant, but I decided against it.
Anyway, is the server down? Or is it actually about the firewall this time?
I have to ask because every time I got the “you’re behind a firewall and the game cannot connect” problem, the server is down. Can we like, change the message or something so that I can actually fix my firewall if it is ever really the problem?

I do get confirmation email nearly instantaneously (I play off peak), but it is still annoying as heck.
I take it this function is here to stay, and it is the only thing that ANet could do to prevent hacking? Yowzer…
As with all class based games—you’re going to get some classes that are good/bad against another class. But beyond anything, you’re going to run into some kind of support class. If you’re one of those, stick close to someone else, and watch as the world crumbles beneath your collective paws.

I’m glad that Anet is trying to keep my account safe.
I’m not glad that I have to jump through hoops every time I want to even log in.
Is this thing going to stay forever? Or is the dev eventually going to plug up their loop holes so I can play normally?
Gack…so the healing kit will become useless in a few levels? I’ll spec out of it soon then, I guess. That’s too bad..it looks pretty awesome.
I see, thank you.
Actually, I was using the safebox. But I’m supposing those do not show up either. Which bags do show up, so I can buy them?
