Thief WvW gear?

OK thanks, I’m glad I asked this. Most builds I’m looking at in intothemists.com use zerker gear, but as I only have the exotic soldiers chest piece it looks like I can mix it up a bit like the build Quakeman linked to above and still be effective.

Do you buy those runes/orbs/accessories from the auction house or is there some vender that sells them? Also is there a vender that sells them for Karma or laurels? (I have about 50 gold and a fair bit or karma and laurels, but no special PVE/dungeon currencies)

I’m just getting into WvW (been doing spvp). I am trying to figure out what gear to get, its all completely new and confusing to me. My build is 10 DA (mug), 30 SA (heal/condi remove), 30 trickery (steal daze), dagger/pistol and SB..

So I go to WvW and there are some venders, one sells gold gear for BoH+gold that have a variety of stats on them. I’ve been getting the power/toughness/+vitality gear is that a good idea? My crit rate is really low (in spvp I use zerker jewel and thrill of the crime for fury to boost crit rate).

Then I still need amulets rings and runes for weapons/armor, but I don’t know where to get these.

Can anyone give me some advice on best gear stats/ jewellery etc for my set up and where to get runes etc?

Unfortunately, one straw poll of 300ish people is a very, very small amount of our active player base. It may not seem like we have many people playing because we are all spread over different servers, but our active numbers are much, much bigger than that.

Couple of points:

1) There have been at least two polls on skyhammer, both with the same result.

2) I conducted the same poll for foefire, most said they liked the map- does that mean we actually do not like foefire? Or does it just mean nothing?

3) You guys ran a series of joint community development threads. It was an awesome idea. Nowhere near 350 different posters participated and yet you claimed to be able to glean what the community wanted from it. And yet when the community tries desperately through multiple polls, counter polls, endless stream of threads from different posters, posts from both new and experienced players begging you to remove it from soloqueue- suddenly you can’t decide what the community wants.

4) Aren’t all the NA servers connected when we play a match? People here are saying the population seems small because we look at the hotjoin servers and see 100-200 people in them-not because the HoM is empty.

I hate skyhammer too. But there’s no need to AFK, just click the PvP icon and choose a new map.

He is talking about solo queue tourney. You can’t leave the map without turning off the game or afking, nor can you choose not to do the map once your queue has popped. That’s why you see so many posts/complaints about skyhammer. Like you say in hotjoin you can just choose another server to play on, so its no biggie for hotjoin.

I think these are good observations.

On the downed state feedback though, imo that is a LTP issue. As you play more you’ll see that downed state is highly strategic and there are key skills and plays for guaranteeing stomps or reviving. Especially as thief, one of the most common builds is dagger pistol, which has amazing stomp or stomp assist skills.

The zerging is a lot less in team/solo queue. In a proper match just blindly “zerging” won’t win- coordinated zergs are pretty good though.

I would say thief is one of the best spvp classes, but it has a high skill cap, and only certain builds work. Also if your team sux, or the other classes/builds don’t compliment you then you can have difficulty. A tanky/condi spam build esp. necro/warrior/engi etc, can do reasonably well in any team line up, because those builds are so forgiving.

Hotjoin is actually the best implementation of casual pvp I have ever seen, and the two other modes give us room for more serious games.

Is it workable?

I love raining fiery destruction down on group fights with a 30/30/0/0/10 berserker staff build, but it is also the most masochistic build I have played. You can turn group fights with huge aoe damage, but are pretty much dead whenever someone so much as looks at you. Very frustrating since there seems to be no concept of “peeling” in GW2.

Has anyone had much success in tpvp using a build like that (or other glass canon ele?)

As for skyhammer in solo arena, we’re kicking around some ideas (definitely not ignoring you guys, just fyi). As of right now, we have no plans to remove it. We’re not quite convinced yet that the majority of our pvp population want it gone, so we’re trying to get metrics on that before we make any changes.

You guys really are out of touch with the community, sad.

We asked for more maps. They gave another map. Now people want the map removed. Maybe let’s think about this. It is one thing to ask. It is another to be given. It is something entirely else to throw it back.

You had better put that thinking cap back on.

From launch community feedback about spvp conquest has generally advocated bigger nodes, limiting the chance to be one shot, more allowance for counter play, a more diverse option for builds.

What we got with skyhammer is the exact opposite.

I am also pretty sure that I saw no posts asking for new maps after spiritwatch, although there have been many posts ever since launch asking for new game modes.

Also note that the feedback is to remove the map from soloqueue not to remove the map.

Haha, I often feel the same way.

Its annoying even in hotjoin because all the maps default to skyhammer as a starting point which is a disincentive to start on a fresh server. It looks especially ugly after a patch reset because all the servers are skyhammer- makes me cringe inside.

This is where I nearly snorted my tea, and instead opted for the short version.
Honestly though, why would you discredit your own thread like that at the very beginning (stop trying to score pts with the devs).

Besides, a merged Skyhammer thread with nigh 500 replies and over 5000 views was not graced by a dev comment, so what makes you think it’ll be any different this time.

I try to make games in my spare time. Even trying to program a smooth third person camera is a huge challenge. The work that went into a game like this is almost unimaginably vast, and the skills needed on both a technical and artistic level to have pulled this off are so far away from my current talents as to appear godlike.

Bottom line: These devs are also people and I want them to know that the page long criticism is specific to a certain aspect of the game and is not meant to be a “bashing”. I would take the same approach to giving indepth and critical feedback to any person. Its not a matter of “scoring points”, it is just a matter of respect.

Your community is sending you a very strong message: please take skyhammer out of soloqueue.

The boring version:

I love this game. To me the skills of the people who made this seem godlike.

However, it seems to me that the feedback of a large majority of the spvp community is not understood, or fully comprehended in some areas. I want to try and make that feedback clear on one particularly thorny issue- skyhammer in solo queue.

We have had at least two polls that I am aware of about what the community thinks about having skyhammer in solo queue. Here is one of them:

337 people voted with 80% asking that it be taken out of solo queue.

However, some people claim that the poll is not representative, or that it is just the “vocal minority”. For example, the argument goes something like:

“Self-selection is biased against the status quo. If you create a poll asking “Should we get rid of Skyhammer?”, the people most motivated to respond will be those who want to get rid of Skyhammer.
Those who are happy with the status quo have no real reason to answer the poll because they already have what they want.”

So I tested this theory by making a poll yesterday asking if Foefire should be removed from solo queue. The poll used the same terminology as the poll about Skyhammer, you can find it here:

In that poll 93% of 133 people (atm) think Foefire should remain in solo queue, essentially debunking claims that people who are happy with the status quo don’t vote.

Taken together these polls show that a very large majority of the spvp community wants to have Skyhammer removed from soloqueue.

Note that this is not a case of some people hating it and some people loving it, as I believe some at ANET think, it is simply that most of your spvp players do not want to play it in solo queue.

My opinion

It may sound melodramatic, but imo unleashing Skyhammer in tournaments was like trying to drive a stake through the heart of your spvp community. It was bad enough that this map allowed a farming exploit on custom servers in hotjoin. I’m not sure the damage can be undone, but the ongoing damage can be stopped by simply taking the map out of the solo queue rotation.

Why did you do it?

One thing that baffles me is how this map actually even came to be.

In perspective:

I understand that an mmo is a huge beast and there are backlogs of issues that have to be prioritized. But not acting for months on an issue like this is hurting.

I also find it weird that you can run many different builds and classes successfully on Foefire, wouldn’t it be better if only a few builds/classes have a huge map specific advantage?

And how about the secondary objective? Don’t you think its a little too complex? I mean if you take lord too soon you can lose the game, or if you send someone into lord keep you can pull a few opposing players away from key positions giving you an advantage. It just seems too strategically deep for tpvp. Shouldn’t it be more like if you kill the Lord huge undodgable/unblockable fireballs fall out of the sky targeting all enemy players every 10 secs and oneshotting most eles?

You guys say this map is good but none of you can even express why you think that way.

Lord, I like your posts when they are critical and in depth, but this thread is one of your worst.

Let me start by saying I agree with many of your insights for example spvp needed to have multiple game modes, or that some skills are OP (although all mmos I have played share this).

However, this game is absolutely cheap for $60. It has three very fleshed out game modes, any of which you can spend hundreds or thousands of hours in. It all runs so smoothly, the graphics are awesome, the animations are fantastic, there is so much good in this game and I can have everything for $60. No paytowin gear, no endless grinding to pvp, no box+monthly sub.

To say/imply that this game is not worth $60 boggles my mind. I spent that before I could even play wow, I spent that on a basic set up for Neverwinter, I spent that on Rift before monthly subs, and same for Tera. And all of those games basically suck dogs’ balls compared to GW2 (well not Tera-but the others are kittened in comparison).

Yeah maybe the balance and pvp is better in COD or unreal tournament or lol, but those are not mmos.

I know the secret, all warriors hate me!
to beat a warrior using hambow you simply KILL HIM. big red fire circle – it has a duration. If warrior goes power – his condi dmg is pathetic. You can dance in it. Warrior does big swing animation – dodge it. Traited warrior can do hammer combo every 24 seconds. shouts have 1min of cooldown. IF your are doing 0 dmg out of the blue – means its 4(5)s immune to it – save cooldowns and wait. Use advantages your class has and thats the big secret.

Combustive shot has 9 sec duration on a 8-10 sec CD. Earthshaker also has an 8-10 sec CD.

Hammer animations are good, it actually used to be fun fighting against warrior because the animations are generally really well implemented.

But then I just joined teamQ like everyone else. Better rewards and no Skyhammer.

The only down-side is that you occasionally play premades during prime-time.

On the current maps, and with how the game is set up skill wise, more than 5vs5 is pretty chaotic. I don’t see how it would add to balance, although new game modes might suit more players better.

Balance isn’t that bad anyway compared to other mmos.

That may be true, but on the other hand 127% of players love it, so your argument is invalid.

On a more serious and less melodramatic note, I get why some people don’t like skyhammer.. Tbh, it’s not my favorite map either, far from it. But these claims of “overwhelming majority” and forum polls are just anecdotal evidence and as such they are completely useless.

If you read the many threads about skyhammer you will find explanations of why it is not fit for solo queue.

No other map has inspired multiple polls, threads, and people outright quitting because of it. If I started a poll “take foefire out of solo queue” its going to get no or next to no votes, because people are happy with that map.

Large community feedback is important.

Stop saying we can easily remove condition / get out of burning field, cause the field can cover a larger area than the point, and it pulse fire… so even if u remove it once, u’ll have it on u the next second; even u are out of the field, there are other attacks that inflict conditions, and they are so many that there is almost a constant reapplication. THIS is the wrong thing in this game, there is too much of everything.

1: If you dont stand in the AOE you also dont need to remove it

2: because its indeed a big AOE you do get some burning.. here’s a tip:

GET OUT! and kill him on range or wait for a few sec, is that so hard?

3: other conditions? on axe/x longbow?? like the bleeding from pin down?
Well pin down gets a nerf so you can just dodge that without any problem..
So i dont see any problem if you talk about other conditions… because axe doesnt do any condi damage and i think he used shield because else i saw some tormet damage also on your screen from offhand sword.

And last:
Longbow is a hybrid weapon, so i dont see any problem here..
Its just like main hand sword, even in berzerker gear you do some nice extra bleeding damage with that weapon.. but it issnt that much.

They could also remove the bleeding but then they have to increase its base raw damage.. because the raw damage from sword is very low compared to Axe.

even in pvp it issnt that hard to keep running in circles around and in/out of the capture point, if you see that big AOE just get out for some seconds if you cant handle it.. this works the same against allot of classes like engi can spam bombs on capture point, are you going to stay there also and eat it all? or necro with its marks etc..

And the AOE burning from longbow without condi amulet issnt doing that much damage, pulses are every 3 SEC!!! most players dont even get hit more than once by this skill..

Except if you dont dodge and just stay in this AOE..
And seeing the amount of ticks it looks like he eats them all on full duration, good job :-)

you know that if you play in the higher tier you cant afford to loose nodes that easily by just stepping outside the aoe damage…no aoe damage should be as big as a node

Actually, I take what I said earlier back, I just ran into a bow build with too much healing/mitigation (and quite good damage) for me to beat with d/p; although a more skilled player may have better luck.

Only from an spvp/tpvp point of view:

I think the stun-lock warrior is good, becomes OP with bow condition cleanse and HS, but a “stun-lock” type class/build is excellent for group play. Also most of the warrior skill animations that stun or knockdown are well telegraphed which means their is ample room for counterplay.

I don’t know how good the thief build you described is for spvp/tpvp.

MM necro seems a little too strong, hambow warrior is a decent counter- but there you have 2 OP specs so…

Ranger- I don’t know any “all condition removing ranger build”; if anything rangers have terrible condition removal: a GM trait that takes three conditions away every ten secs and transfers to pet (killing pet), a heal that periodically cleanses some conditions, and a signet on a long CD that I wouldn’t take on most builds. In the current meta you basically have to take that GM trait and healing spring and conditions still destroy you.

Meditation guard has much better condition removal on short CDs, engi has automated response GM that makes them immune to conditions at 25% health, thief cleanses in stealth and on some other skills, warrior LB has on demand 1-3 condi cleanse every 8 secs that also does huge aoe damage, and a condition immunity trait. They all trump the ranger in condi-removal imo.

I found d/p thief to be a great counter to warrior. The secret is to have blind on them all the time and kite away if they use zerker stance.

Its not a guaranteed win because usually they do so much damage that if you slip up you are dead or close to dead, but you will come to love facing the typical hambow warrior once you get the hang of it (steal, blindfield, HS to stealth backstab, use your stolen twirl through the blind field for huge damage and aoe blinds, drop another blind field backstab and auto attack, use shadow shot to blind and close gaps, then steal again and repeat until dead).

Its an awesome feeling when you can do that and kill the warrior without having taken any damage, although the good warriors won’t make it so easy on you.

Likewise dps (meditation) guard is good because you have blinds on a few abilities, but it is easier to lose than when playing d/p thief.

The ICD is too long- every 5 secs or less would be better, also it would be good if it cleansed conditions in some way because ranger has limited condition cleanse options atm.

Most likely the banner war will be on far. You will fair far better in a team fight dropping clusterbombs, poison fields, and ganking low targets or even assisting home if the enemy is trying to push than solo-pushing far. Remember, if the warrior is sitting afk on his home, that means you can usually create a numbers advantage at mid if your team isn’t completely terrible. At the very least, you will not put your team one man out (trying to cap a node that has already been capped) if you choose to not fight the banner warrior. If you can get another teammate to join your to push far, however, this is a different story.

I am glad you chimed in Jack. I have only played against this build a few times (in tpvp), each time at mid. One time my team was quite coordinated so it was always three vs one at mid- even so the warrior took so much to take down it was amazing.

Another time I foolishly went in alone, because I have become confident of taking on warriors with d/p- which is such an awesome anti-warrior weapon set- and when he just stood in my blind field I thought “thank you!” (its the kindest thing a warrior can do), but with my fourth backstab hardly moving his health bar I was like “wtf!”.

Against guardian bunkers there is room to interrupt key abilities and apply extreme pressure, but I can’t see any obvious way to outplay a build that can just stand there doing nothing and be barely affected by attacks that would have killed most other builds three times over if the player had just stood still doing nothing in my blind field.

That’s why I asked about it.

To be honest I am dubious about shortbow being effective, because I used that strategy with d/d thief against non-tank warriors and it didn’t work. My auto attack has poison on the third strike for free and hits faster and pretty much as hard as shortbow, plus I basically can’t be hit when using d/p (because of blind). It seems illogical to swap to shortbow but I’ll still give it a try since it was suggested.

Can a d/p thief kill a tanky banner warrior in spvp?

Most of the time I can kill warriors in spvp with d/p (thanks to blinds), but I am having troubles with very tanky banner warriors.

They don’t even seem to do anything- I had one fight where a warrior just stood in my blind field taking backstabs, auto attacks, and basically just laughed at me (he was typing while standing stationary in my blindfield and didn’t block or use any ability).

I am using a typical glass d/p thief build.

I don’t get to play against such builds often, but it really surprised me because most warriors, while they can take a lot of damage, eventually start to melt. I have also met a few with banners+longbow, not quite as tanky but the condition damage was too strong for me to fight them on a point for long.

Any thoughts?

Why the Ranger?

In general anything other than highly defensive Ranger builds are pretty easy to take down as a thief.

Its easy to target and stay on a glass ranger, you go down quick, are easy to stomp if thief has offhand pistol (because blind neutralizes your interrupt and a swap to wolf for fear, or any thief that has shadowstep off CD).

However, if you build defensively-and you don’t need to go spirit ranger btw, and take something like hydromancy sigil for weapon swap, and can stay out of blind fields you can kill most thieves- especially the glass canon ones.

I remember doing some random BGs on my mage one day. I had no teammates online at that moment and wow doesnt have soloqueues so i have to settle with whatever pvp is available. So i did some random BGs. A few minutes in a random guildie whispers me: “why are you doing random BGs, arent you fully geared allready?”

but the gear progression also meant it was fun to play the “hotjoin” pvp with ridiculously good gear,
i used to do it to feel godly, it was hellishly fun having a 100k health Blood DK during wotlk while everyone else in the BG was sitting around 50k (with 70k being the most i’d ever see on anyone else) hp,
topping damage meters while being unkillable and running the flags, godly fun. >:-3

This is exactly why I love spvp in GW2.

I don’t see endure pain/zerk stance as comparable to AR. Those skills have a time limit and a longish CD. They are also (mostly) activated abilities so there is a degree of player skill involved.

Its not like the sustain of warriors due to healing signet is already crazy like kitten. Remember that Berserker stance also blocks blinds, thus it is 20x harder to kite a warrior, which can kill for example an engenieer (w/o AR) in a pindown+ stun chain. The Warrior can make couple of mistakes and will still win, not to mention what happens if you face a skilled warrior.
And engis still have a decent chance against warriors…just look at mesmers – From a whole shatter a warrior drops maybe 20-25% while 1 hit with the hammer or shortbow puts the mesmer in serious danger. So please dont refer to warrior when it comes to skill…this class has no high risk high rewards.

However this thread is about Automated response…which is is a free ticket against condi classes. I know that it is still possible to kill the engi but it becomes substantially more difficult when this trait is used.

Warriors are extremely strong for various reasons, but zerker stance and endure pain are activated skills that can be powerful if used at the correct time, wasted if used at the wrong moment, and have counter plays. That is how every powerful skill should be.

AR is permanent zerker stance while under 25% HP that is passively applied. Its far more powerful and requires zero skill to use. That is the kind of skill I would prefer not to see in game.

Perhaps it could be brought in line with bark skin (ranger trait) by reducing duration by 50%.

Warrior longbow is not bugged. Cleansing ire clears conditions when adrenaline is used. The F1 skill on longbow uses adrenaline regards of whether it hits or not. This is also in keeping with the general mechanics in game where ele and thief healing options also heal on use, not on hit and guardian meditations also heal use, regardless if they hit anyone or not.

Cleansing ire +longbowF1 is better at cleansing conditions than a dps guard build with three active condition cleansers (smite, contemplation purity, signet resolve). Not to mention that it also does great damage. Its partly because warrior is also naturally more resilient against conditions due to the high health pool. The awesome synergy between the trait, skills, and natural class features makes it almost too good to be true.

As someone who is currently outside the top 1000 on the leaderboards I agree that the devs are doing a good job. Its also important for keen players to voice their concerns about aspects of the game in a reasonable fashion.

Some say that the devs don’t listen to the player base, but the player base in itself is composed of various opinions; basically whatever they do or don’t do someone is going to criticize them.

like fixing profession mechanics bugs known to them for over half a year or longer..
yeah.. leave the dev’s alone.

Are there really any gamebreaking profession bugs?

When I play, everything goes fairly smoothly, sometimes things don’t work exactly right, like a signet passive might not work for a while, or a skill won’t trigger for some reason, or there is some lag; but overall the game is extremely polished and over the course of a session I never feel like there was some profession bug which stopped me from becoming a pvp god.

So I feel that this smooth, enjoyable experience, which I’ve spent 100s of hours wasting my life- er -enjoying myself with, is thanks to the hard work of the amazing dev team.

Sometimes I or others say “hey don’t you think warrior is OP because of such and such”, or “isn’t braindead condition spam a bit over the top?” etc, because we notice things that seem off and want to give that feedback; but just saying “the devs suck” really doesn’t help in any way, and makes me think you haven’t played many mmos before because most that I have played are worse in every way in terms of balance, dev feedback, bugs etc.

yes, this is my fav game.

is there better mmo pvp currently? haven’t found any.

I have searched long and hard to find another mmo with pvp that is this good and accessible but there is nothing out there atm. All the rest have worse balance issues, less communication from devs, and are gear-based not skill-based.

There are a couple of mmos with perhaps a better combat system but they have gear-grinds or take too long to even get to the spvp part; ie are limited in other more important ways.

The main thing the game is lacking is a variety of pvp game modes, and that is supposedly going to be addressed.

Well done on becoming #1, incredible that you haven’t lost since November 2013!

I agree with warrior sustain being too high and ranger needing some better condition removal- you have some good ideas for that btw. However, I don’t really agree with many of your other points and I see greater issues in other areas, like the strength of aoe.

In particular, I don’t understand your problem with ranger shortbow and the elite- if the bow is doing a lot of damage the ranger is glass, if the ranger is tanky the bow does low damage and relies on condition damage from flanking or sun spirit procs.

If condition damage is high the ranger either has low hp or low toughness, if the condition damage is not high I am not sure that it does enough damage on a tanky/heal build to even out-damage healing signet.

In addition the shortbow has already been severely nerfed since launch. Its strong against some classes/builds and weak against others. Certainly not something that merits the second place on your list of nerfs, considering what else is in the game.
