What about nerfing turrets ?

I am using a Greatsword. I hit it with Whirling Wrath, then I used Symbol of Wrath, then an auto-attack chain. It lost about 10% of its HP after the 3rd hit of my autoattack chain.

Are you sure, you selected the right amulet in the PvP equipment window?
Maybe you were playing with rabid or settler^^

I tried Celestial at first, and could not damage it for more than 5% with the above mentioned chain. Then I tried Soldier’s and it did about 10% of the Turret’s HP. I think the Engineer must have Metal Plating and Autotool Installation trait equipped or something like that. The Engineer just drops the Turrets then leaves for another point.
I think I could kill the Turrets(if they dont kill me first) but it would take me over a minute of hitting them.

Yeah the thumper is really strong, you have to try and ignore it somehow. That usually means not fighting the engi on point if melee, but I guess that is balanced right?

Its not even worth using hotjoin to practice new builds, just play around against the npc/bosses in the mists for a bit then go straight to unranked. You can test your build better in the unranked environment because you usually get 5vs5’s and much more balanced games than hotjoin.

Necro in spvp

Yasha.5963

Recently I have been playing around with necro, which I haven’t played that much before, and I noticed that with a power build Lich form auto attack does about 5-6,000 damage from long range that can be traited to pierce. If you time your transformation right you can take out the whole enemy team in a large team fight.

Deathshroud is no slouch either – with a short cd fear and auto attack doing 2-5,000 ranged damage. If you aren’t getting focused it also seems to last for ages.

Has it always been like that? When I last played necro (about 18 months ago) deathshroud seemed to be consumed really quickly and I don’t recall Lich doing that much damage.

What happened with engis anyway? I remember early on playing against engi builds that had high mobility and regen but low damage, some with high burst damage but were fairly squishy, and ones with a fair amount of cc but not too much damage.

These days they have builds with great mobility high damage, high damage mitigation/regen, and lots of hard cc, or are tough as nails with turrets that seem extremely strong, or seem to be able to constantly evade, go into stealth quicker than a d/p thief, fart aoe cc.

When and how did they go from somewhat balanced to monsters?

I never said there wasnt trash talking but there was less of it. Let me explain, practice mode is you being put into a certain arena where as before you got to pick which one. Also with it use to be mostly 8 vs 8, ranked tourneys and then paid ranked tourneys the set up was very different for everyone. The builds for everyone was different, the problem became farming glory. Before you can into toxic player guess what you can pick and switch to a different server where there are lots of people and 8 vs 7 there wasnt a huge problem in score like 4 vs 3. The other points are in my original post.

Also i think the trash talking is the same as wow, if you dont think so then you probably werent into it as much as the other people cause open world dueling and the ability for you to take over towns and turn new players or players you dont like into sheep was a point of interest for many. Also game like champions online people didnt share alot of builds so you had alot of you stole my build and you suck at it type of conversations.

I think the ability for new players to join a map that they dont choose is a problem. Me and my friends tested builds all the time but now you need to buy a custom arena for it. Forcing unknowing players entering the game about pvp into negative situations.

You can still pick and switch different servers, just press the “game browser” button . If anything I notice less trash talk now than around launch, probably because there is less people.

With WoW I was only talking about BGs, I never even heard the word “newb” before I played GW2 even though I mainly played BGs in other mmos. When I went back to play Rift for a while I was shocked at how friendly everyone was in battlegrounds.

Contrary to what kdaddy claims above, there has been trash talking in spvp since day one. There tends to be less in unranked and ranked than in “practice” mode (similarly there was less in solo and team than in hotjoin before the recent spvp structure changes).

My advice is to play unranked or ranked and skip “practice” altogether. You will still get trash talk, but probably won’t be so bad. Also if you get a team together obviously you should have few problems with people mouthing off. Plus “practice” mode is broken in various ways so better to just keep out of that cesspit.

I was actually surprised like the OP at the amount of trash talk in gw2 spvp compared to games like Rift and WoW where I didn’t see anything like this. But I see the same (or worse) trash talk in moba like Smite etc.

I practice in unranked, “practice” mode seems broken in many ways whenever I play it making it virtually impossible to test new builds/ideas.

Technically, it’s working as intended. Teams are able to join this unranked mode and test their team composition, against others who may also have a strong team composition.

If you’re wanting to test new build and ideas, I recommend hotjoin and dueling.

Well thanks for the advice, but like I said hotjoin (aka “practice”) is broken and duelling is fun but doesn’t teach you how to play a build in a game, and not all builds are set up for duelling.

In my opinion “unranked” is the new hotjoin. It is infinitely better to practice in because you mostly get 5vs5s and randomized teams. “Practice” is filled with spectator cheaters, team stacking, and constant quitting and uneven team numbers. There is no point in playing that mode.

The PvE is what makes this game.
PvP (apart from WvW) almost seems like an afterthought of the devs, there’s not even a dedicated 1v1 system – just 5v5 on the same 4 maps.

The only reason most of us bought GW2 was for its pvp, and if you have played other mmos it would be obvious that this game was built from the ground up for pvp; in fact most of the criticism I read about GW2 in other game forums is from pvers complaining about a lack of “roles” and everyone being “dps”.

GW2 is a pvp game with pve tacked on.

A friend of mine found Turret Engineer to be very annoying so he decided to make one to test them out and see how to counter/beat them. He simply used Tomes/Crafting from lv2 to lv80. He copied a build online, obviously very new to the class and hopped into queue with me for a few matches to try the class. He didn’t even know what half the skills did but managed to bunker home pretty effectively in 2vs2, 2vs1 or 1vs1 situations. That just shows how low the skill floor it is for that build. Obviously there are always counters to every build but when a player with no prior knowledge on the class goes straight into battle and manage to come out on top, shows something is clearly wrong.

Why did he need to use tombs crafting to get to level 80? He could have just jumped straight into pvp at level 2.

Taking beast at beginning in Ranked

in PvP

Posted by: Yasha.5963

Yasha.5963

I’m no pro but I usually try to get 1 home, 2 beast->mid, 2 mid at start. That:

a. prevents the other team from stealing usually.
b. allows your team to not let mid get capped.
c. allows your team to get the small stat buff.
d. allows me as an engi to hold mid with my multiple invulns until backup arrives and
e. if time allows, sneak over to their creature, magnet it, and pry bar for the steal.

I usually solo queue and this seems to work decently. Again though, I’m bad so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt.

That works because you play engineer which is usually worth 2 or 3 other players in solo queue, so in practice you have 4 or 5 players at mid and 2 on beast.

However, if there is someone with the magical anti-engi build on the other team at mid, you guys will lose mid, then the other two/three players arriving from home/beast will be outnumbered at mid and die, likely setting your team up for a staggered respawn with players blindly rushing out in ones and twos into outnumbered fights.

Turret Engies = are OVERPOWERED

in PvP

Posted by: Yasha.5963

Yasha.5963

a t s e. They are NOT overpowered. They never have been. They never will be. Because they only fulfill ONE roll. Area denial. They secure a single point. And thats all they do. Thats all they ever do. Thats all the build CAN do.

People say L2P when people die to turret engineers because Turret engis are countered by the simplest thing a person can possibly do….There countered by being ignored.

If a turret eng is on mid go home and far. As long as your team is compotenet youl win the 4v4 on far and then just kill the enemy as they trickle in. That leaves one person that can sit halfway between home and mid and watch the engi. If the engi leaves run in and decap. If the engi goes to home they can engage before the engi gets there. KIll them AND take the mid point. Otherwise they can sit there until someone on the other team trys to steal home and then defend home in that case while there team now wins the 4v3 on far.

There are two possibilities. Either A: Your team is less skilled than the other team and you lose the 4v4 on far. or B: Your team is more skilled than the other team and you win the 4v4 on far.

What this means is that turret engineers are strong in low/mid tier pvp because the people in that area of pvp just aren’t capable of realising that they dont have to have that point to win. Or there not experienced enough to find it out yet.

Meaning turret engineers are only a strong part of a comp when there opponents are either bad or new.

Turrets are strong in 1v1s on a point becuase there meant to be. There designed to be strong in that specific situation. Its the entire purpose of turrets. Hell its the purpose of turrets in any game I have ever seen a turret used. Even in FPS. They also dedicate there entire builds to that one role. That one position. Meaning they cant do ANYTHING ELSE even remotely as effectively as other classes.

So you are saying that a turret engi guarantees the team one node, so the engi’s team only has to win one other node (or keep two decaped) while the other team has to win two nodes.

Very amusing to see how you try to rationalize that.

2-3 votes min. for map selection

in PvP

Posted by: Yasha.5963

Yasha.5963

I am not sure how the probabilities are calculated, but at the moment it seems like there is an equal weighting for votes, so if 9 people vote for one map there is a 90% chance that the majority will win.

I would prefer if the probability was increasingly skewed toward the majority vote. For example in a 9 to 1 vote there should be less than 1% chance of the single vote winning. A 9 to 2 vote might give a 10% chance for the two vote winning etc. I don’t have an exact formula for it but I think you can understand my drift.

The reason is that 9 people voting for the same map is an overwhelming majority, and while it is nice that the minority has a voice, its just not right imo for one person to be able to override the such a strong consensus, at least not at the relatively high frequency I see atm.

Spirit Ranger vs Turret Engineer

in PvP

Yasha.5963

Its probably not such an issue if you are playing with your own team, but for pugs its quite difficult to deal with. If you are ranged you can avoid the thumper (but usually not some of the other turrets), but if melee (especially squishy melee) there is really no counter play.

You can’t blind/cc the turrets or quickly destroy them (at least the thumper seems virtually indestructible, and the other turrets can be placed in hard to focus down spots). With spirits, for one they can be killed /focused, and secondly you can blind/cc the ranger (effectively disabling most spirit passive effects), and third you can cc the spirit of nature to stop a rez: ie there is clear counter play.

Medi Guard vs Hambow/Shoutbow

My frand Nimrud you can’t really compare the two! Medi Guardians fulfill the role that Thieves do but not as well! It’s a fragile burst build that gets melted by conditions! Meanwhile both hambow and celestial shout Warriors are extremely tanky and can contest the point, stomp downed baddies, revive teammates, and do other things that beefy builds do! If you try to do any of those things as a Meditations Guardian you will asplode! So pick a role! Do you want to be a boring beefcheeser on point, or do you want burst people down with the awesome fiery might of a Medi Guard!

Wahoo! Bye frands!

Very good summary, that’s exactly how I see it.

From time to time I play other mmos and some of them are quite good, but none of them have the focus on skill-based pvp that GW2 does. They are all mainly pve games with pvp tacked on or open world pvp games that require you to spend most of your time grinding to level/gear up (or a combination of that).

Also even from a camera/UI perspective few mmos are as well designed as GW2. After playing many mmos I have huge admiration for the way the GW2 is laid out, apart from a few things (like Asura), it is a very well thought out pvp focused game.

The only game I have seen that comes close to what you are looking for (a spvp replacement) is Gigantic- and that is still being developed. It may not even be that good for all we know. There is a game called Forge (on steam) which is sort of like GW2 spvp, but I thought it was crap (compared to GW2). There are a few other indi games like that around that I tried, but they are all clunky or empty.

Is Turret Engi the "go-to" build?

in PvP

Posted by: Yasha.5963

Yasha.5963

The pros are saying that turret is only OP vs noobs because an experienced player won’t attack a turret engi unless they are playing a counter spec. But when you are playing without a team turret engi (and some other builds) becomes exponentially stronger since 1) you are not guaranteed that your team will even have a counter, 2) even if your team has a counter build there is no guarantee that the player knows what they are doing, 3) the rotation for the team with turret engi is simplified, which means a lot when you don’t have a team.

Basically if you are not playing a direct counter build (is there one?) you can’t engage 1vs1 on a point, and unlike against a bunker guard you can’t hold a point against them.

Experts: What class carries solos best?

Yasha.5963

Necro is a good class, but it is too easy to counter 1vs1. A half decent thief should be able to 1vs1 most necros and 2 players should definitely kill it pretty quickly.

If the Necro knows how to play, he can 1v1 anything with almost no problem. 1v2 noobs is a piece of cake as well. Theif should never attack a necro 1v1….you get rekt. IF the necro has zero life force, then the theif has a shot; but there’s no way to tell, so you don’t do it (2 LB’s = dead theif). I can’t tell you how many solo Q’s I go into as necro and take out 1v3 and cap the point. Newbs be newbs and they won’t stand a chance on a class that can put out a ton of damage fast.

I guess I haven’t met a necro that knows how to play since the dhumfire nerf then because necro is pretty much the only class I feel confident to kill or at least close to kill on my thief in a 1vs1. Other classes depends on their build. I have never seen a necro take out 1vs3 and cap a point. Maybe you were mistaking Mesmer clones for actual players?

Celestial != turret engi. Turret engi was “op” before the whole celestial meta. And to be honest, it isn’t that “OP” in the first place. Just range turrets and then take down the engi. If you want to play smart, let him have one node and be afk while your team outnumber the rest of the map. Also, as someone mentioned, necros or any class capable of stacking conditions are hard counter to engineers. If you keep in mind that and some of the important cds (wrench, supply crate, etc) you shouldn’t have problems.

Idk, all this sounds a lot to all the QQ about rangers when september patch went out.

Pretty hard to outrange rifle and rocket turrets; those turrets also have a pretty decent rate of fire for something that never misses, can’t be cc’d, and just does its thing automatically. Also I am not so sure about the conditions stacking being a counter since engis seem to have pretty good condition removal options depending on build.

The only counter I saw mentioned above was boon stripping and I don’t know of any class that can boon strip faster than an engi can reapply.

Necro is a good class, but it is too easy to counter 1vs1. A half decent thief should be able to 1vs1 most necros and 2 players should definitely kill it pretty quickly.

The common tanky, aoe farting engi and ele builds on the other hand can 1vsX for a long time. I have also noticed some mesmers going far with a trollish build, again they can 1vsX for quite some time especially against newer players, but its harder for them to hold a point. That shout warrior build seems pretty good as well for carrying.

Really sick of Eles and Engis

in PvP

So what is the trick to beating engis?

A lot of their builds seem to do massive aoe damage and be extremely durable. I find them quite different to say a tanky guardian who are very hard to kill but don’t do much damage and don’t have that much aoe, at least not really strong aoe or seemingly perpetual uptime on swiftness and other boons.

If a team has two decent engis, it feels very strong, because everything near them is taking a lot of damage and getting cc’d, and from what I have seen they can kill almost anything 1vs1 and sometimes 1vs2 (or at least force a retreat, or enough time to get backup). Is there some specific counter build that makes mincemeat of them?

I just bought a friend an account (with the $20 special offer recently). He loves it. However, I am not sure how he would have fared if I hadn’t been there to teach him the basics, in some ways spvp is fairly complex.

I don’t think hotjoin should be removed, we went there for a few practice rounds and he seems to like it because he can just mess around fighting and having fun (after he plays for a while he will probably hate the unbalanced teams and start to queue unranked more though).

One problem is that it is actually pretty difficult to get the hang of rotations – which is the key to winning games. Even if you know how to rotate, if the rest of your team is doing something else you get crushed. That is also the biggest “problem” I see in unranked now- its difficult to anticipate where team members are going, because they are often doing unexpected things.

3) Your scenario of 2 engis holding one point with a guardian and 2 other players taking the other points is rad

Try playing PvP w/ rare equipment only, and see what difference it makes. Trust me, it does.

Why would ANYONE shortchange THEIR teammates by bringing ANYTHING less than a max level toon to PvP? Why would ANYONE play PvP w/o every single attack and ability slot ready to bring it? Why would ANYONE bring a toon to PvP w/o the ability to test every combination of attacks and builds, to be able to find the one that best fits your playstyle?

The very suggestion seems rather limited and shortsighted, IMHO.

Yasha.5963

Again, you don’t need to level up to 22 for PvP or 18 for WvW.

From the announcement: “For experienced players, most systems are still available as they are today; we will simply introduce these systems more gradually to new players and allow them to learn our game at a reasonable pace. For example, WvW and PvP will be messaged to players via the level-up notification system at levels 18 and 22, and the buttons in the top left will be hidden until then, but experienced users can use the portals in Lion’s Arch or use hot keys to access those game modes immediately. Once the buttons are unlocked for one character on your account, they’ll be visible to all future characters as well.”

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/a-fresh-start-the-new-player-experience-in-guild-wars-2/

The why and how of this has been discussed too many times to count since it’s announcement back in August.

But back on topic. You are not required to level up at all. Just use the portal in LA, or press the hot key to gain access to WvW. (“B” I believe). If you don’t have LA opened yet, you can use B to go to WvW, go through the LA portal, then into the heart of the mists portal. Plus once you unlock the quick access on a character, it becomes unlocked on every character on that account.

Cool, I was just looking at my friends computer, like you say I can take my characters straight into spvp even if they are below level 22 with the normal UI icons.

Good to know it becomes unlockable for the account once you unlock it on one character, my mate will be stoked when I tell him.

I don’t get these changes. It is vitally important to be able to easily swap between classes to improve at pvp, and yet we are forced to go through 22 levels of pve before we can even touch spvp? You know how boring doing those 22 starter levels is going to be for every class? Crazy.

Every class feels pretty weak compared to ele and engis.

I think the main thing you are suffering from is post-OP syndrome™. You got used to playing necros when they were totally OP and now need to readjust. You started thinking that is was your amazing skill that was carrying teams to victory and not your OP class (no offense intended, you may well be extremely skilled).

Necros are still strong, its still a tough/close fight. You don’t need to “cheat” by prestacking deathshroud before a match, its a class mechanic that is meant to build in combat. Adjust your playstyle a bit and you should do just fine.

Just 2 things I would suggest:

1) Play a mesmer before complaining. It’s much easier to beat them after understanding what they do and what they can’t do.

2) Mesmer > thief doesn’t make any sense because thiefs have even more stealth (unless you play against S/D thiefs 24/7).

Besides that stealth = enemy can cap the point.

I refuse to waste a character slot on a class that I consider cheat heavy and in need of revision. I have a eng, a necro, a warrior, a ele, and a ranger. I only PvP right now w/ the first three, still getting my ranger tactics down.

But the main point here, that everyone seems to be avoiding, is that I am requesting the DEVS to PROVE ME WRONG. By creating a “killed in pvp” tracker and publishing the results. By showing with hard numbers and inarguable proof that, for instance, mesmers die 1/2 as often as warriors.

This can be simply done by tracking each class, recording how many times they die in a given series or set of matches, or by sheer numbers, and then calculating the average amount of deaths.

example: say that 1,000,000 people play warriors on a given day. Say that all of those warriors die 3,000,000 times on that day. So that’s an average death rate of 3 per player. Now say 500,00 people play mesmers in a day. Say that only 500.000 mesmers die that day. That’s an average of ONE death per player.

And that is important. Deaths (stomps) equal points. If a class is getting killed significantly LESS than other classes, then teams utilizing that class have a small but real advantage.

To extend my example from above, if one team had 5 warriors and that team faced off against 5 mesmers (ick!), then the second team would likely have a 50 point advantage in kills alone. Not to mention the fact that since the warriors are dying MORE frequently, the warrior team is likely to be losing point control, if for no other reason than they are respawning.

I have the feeling that ONCE this tracker is created and published, we will finally see what I have been saying for over six months now. That mesmers are harder to kill in PvP than almost any other class, guardians possibly excepted.

cheers

You won’t even take the effort to play a class yourself and yet you demand that the devs undertake a study to “prove” that your anecdotal theory is incorrect?

Is there anything I can call that attitude that won’t get me banned from the forums?

Skyhammer never gets 5 or more votes

I’m actually fairly pleased with the new system.

However:

i had a nice one last night, 7 votes for skyhammer, 2 for khylo, 1 for temple…. RNG chooser went with khylo.

GG anet, not even your own RNG function likes Skyhammer.

9 for kyhlo 1 for skyham, got skyham…

Shouldn’t happen… IMO if 80% of the votes are for 1 map, it should realistically ALWAYS be that map. Because odds are 4/5 players from each team voted for that one map and the other 2 are newbies, or trolling, AND EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT and legitimately like or want that map! The entire game shouldn’t have to suffer for the last 2 players 10-20% vote, to appease the one or two builds voting for a map they have a clear (and arguably unfair) advantage on.

The worst case scenario for the team getting the short end of the stick on a 80% vote would mean 3 players from the team still voted for the popular map. So I really believe 8/10 votes is the proper cut off point for a guaranteed map roll.

omg i had that soo many times is it a bug? I had once too skyhammer got 1-2 votes and roulette spinned and skyhammer won…i closed the game…sorry team..this happens with other maps..people vote and even tho one map has most voted the roulette picks another one…like whats the point of voting then if the system pick its own?

Its frustrating when there is one vote for skyhammer and it gets selected, but look on the bright side- the more votes a map gets the more chance there is that it will be selected, at the same time there is still a chance for the minority vote to win. That is a huge, huge improvement over what we had before and it is also quite fair.

I have had far less skyhammer matches with the new system than in the past, and I also have some insight into which map is likely to be picked. That makes me feel much better about playing- I actually pretty much stopped playing solo queue because of skyhammer- and even if a map pops that I don’t like (skyhammer), I don’t really feel that bad about playing it any more.

To answer your last question, I think the point of the roulette wheel is to give everyone a chance to get what they want even if they aren’t a majority, and that is a nice touch imo.

Mixed Queues are NOT good.

Not having premades fight against pugs was one of the great attractions of GW2 pvp, something that really set it apart from other mmos where pug stomping is the norm. The move to an unranked queue and many of the other recent changes seem great but I am confused why premades can fight against pugs in unranked.

Surely ranked is the place for teams and unranked for pugs or maybe small two person groups? There is still a large difference between the old ranked solo queue and unranked even if teams cannot play in it.

Pre-mades in unranked is bad

Title says it all. Its great to have unranked, but facing teams of pre-mades solo is not fun.

Am I crazy?

Yes.

First time I played I lost 0-500, next time I won 500-0, but since then I have had a lot of scores inbetween. But putting aside the scores, I just love how you can take a completely different approach to conquest on the map. You can flank, mass stealth and surprise, get in and out of battles, there seems to be a “front” to manipulate etc.

This happens in conquest too. Watch some EU matches of the go4gw2 cup. However, conquest favors not zerg balling like you have in courtyard.

Well I accept that I may be crazy, but I rarely see the kind of flow of play in conquest that I do in courtyard, unless people are just messing around off point.

what do you think if the respawn time is removed? would it help with spawn camping?

As I said I like courtyard so I don’t think it needs to be changed. I never get spawn camped -there are three exits after all.

Double capping? You mean two people standing on a point to cap it? If so that is bad because you only need one person to cap and the other player can be helping in another fight.

There was a great video/guide on the forum recently about how to rotate, have a look for that to help you with rotation questions. Basically, though, the idea is to always outnumber the enemy or have even numbers at fights where your class/builds have the advantage.

Ele’s are still monstrous so if you know how to play one its a good choice. Warriors are much stronger than they were 18 months ago, engineers are very strong, thief has been nerfed quite a bit.

Most teams just seem to want to stick in a group and zerg, but you can often just get behind them and pick off some softies or disrupt their lines. Strong rez and stomp skills become even more important because killing is the sole way to gain points.

Seems to not go for long enough any more though. You just start getting into the swing of things and its over.
