Maybe I am missing something. Is glory going to be fazed out completely? In future will it just be a gold cost for everything in HoM?
Why could I buy 18 slot bags for all my toons for peanuts before, and now can only afford to buy a few before going bankrupt?
I reiterate, I like the direction of the changes to rewards, but please tell me how the current gold price of goods takes into consideration the spvp community.
I have gone from hero to zero pretty much. The only answer seems to be to grind pve, play spvp for another year (I expect 600g from 4000 games at average of 15g per game), or play the auction house? Was that what you had in mind?
The reason spvpers were asking for gold rewards was so that we could participate in the rest of the game, not be locked out of rewards in the only part of the game we play.
I like the new rewards system, however, I have only 8 gold after playing the game since launch because I play spvp nearly all the time. The gold cost of goods is just far too high. Just buying a 20 slot bag will bankrupt me.
Perhaps the gold cost is set at a rate that makes sense if I was starting from day 1 and a year from now I would have 500,00 glory and say 400g from spvping, (actually the gold cost still seems high even at that point), but what about the spvpers now? We can’t really buy anything even sitting on half a million glory.
Spent 500k glory today and made just over 350k gold before the market began to crash.
I don’t know how to do that, nor do I really want to. Can I not just play the game normally and get a fair reward?
It’s fine.
Hotjoin gives 15s for winning 10s for losing.
OK thanks for confirming that, I looked around but couldn’t find the notes on it.

Just wanted to confirm what the gold reward is for hotjoin and what reward you get after an auto balance.
I thought that hotjoin reward was 25 silver for winning, but today I got auto balanced and only got 15 silver (auto balanced to losing team), even though I had the highest “score”.
Does anyone know how this works now?
I want rewards that will help me also enjoy pvp in WvW.
In other words, a way to level in spvp, gold, and whatever else you need to gear up in WvW.
Other than that, changing the crafting in spvp to make it more rewarding (not so random, I really don’t enjoy how it is set up at the moment), and getting more access to skins and revamping titles.
On a more ambitious level, I would love to see rewards spill over into HoM, such as through player housing/islands, pets, slave girls (gladiators need slave girls/boys right?).
If it is hotjoin you are talking about, what you need to do is choose which server to play on in the browser. If you choose a server that is currently playing spirit watch or temple of the silent storm you will be right for a few games before skyhammer pops again (skyhammer comes after Capricorn in the hotjoin rotation and is followed by spirit watch).
If you are talking about solo join tournament then the map selection is just random and there is nothing you can do about it.
If you don’t know the difference between hotjoin/solo queue let me know, it might be confusing if you don’t play spvp much.
I refuse to play skyhammer map in tpvp anymore, it is just a waste of time.
I don’t care what the penalty is, even if my account got deleted- I will just quit this map whenever it pops.
Please permaban this guy for 4v5 afk – thx.
If u dont want to play the map dont play soloq simple yes. I dont like all the maps / a bunch of players/bad builds. But when i sign up i would smash my keyboard just to win. Afk is not an option.
so yea ban this guy please.
I don’t afk, I shut down the game and go and do something else.
So, a full-fledged PvE update disguised as PvP. Wait, who asked for this? Reading the blog-post, this is what I gathered:
- They removed the even playing field in PvP, as now, totally new players will not have access to the same skills as veterans.
Yeah, I didn’t quite understand that part of the blog. The best part of GW2 is that spvp is a level playing field. Is that really going to change? Surely there was some communication error there?
This is a great topic, and I would love to give feedback, but it seems you are already planning a lot of ideas that would integrate pvp more with wvw/pve in terms of rewards, and I like where you are going with it.
It feels like the goal posts have shifted because many of the suggestions I had in mind are similar to what you posted in the blog. I am intrigued by the reward system for working toward gear sets that you mentioned.
One concern is that taking away rank feels like taking levels off players in pve, will we get an advanced standing for our current rank in the new system? Another way to measure our progress for time spent playing as opposed to rewards based purely on competition (ladders)?
I don’t care that much about a total reset to “level 1” to be honest (will be fun just working up again), but I can see why some people would feel bad about it.
Here was a nice topic about that but was deleted just few minutes ago. I dont understand why.
Yeah, it was removed for “inappropriate formatting”. The thread had good feedback from the devs, and when I last looked about an hour ago there was no flaming or anything like that. There was a great discussion going on in fact.
Did a moderator accidently press the wrong button?
I’ll post in this one since it appears to be the official discussion thread on it.
First, let me start by saying that this blog post was great. I have posted many threads over the past year stating what I think should happen to PvP and almost all of them has been done now or has been stated as planned. Obviously, that means I’m happy. I do want to break down how I feel about each one:
Gold and Experience in PvP
- This one is huge. I’ve played PvP since head start. I leveled my thief to 80 via crafting, and I had to buy gems to do it. Otherwise, I’m made almost no money.
- The same issue is with character progression. I acquired skill in PvP and I had no way to immediately carry that over to WvW because I was at a major level disadvantage. Like I said, these 2 changes alone make my day. I also love they are coming on the 10th.
Removing PvP and PvE gear difference
- Again, this is something I totally agree with. See the above bullet points for gold/experience. After 1,000+ hours in PvP, I shouldn’t walk into Lions Arch looking like a trial account. Love it.
Achievements
- This is one of my few concerns. Although, I really love this addition, I don’t like the timing. The reason I say that is the MMR issue. Currently, MMR is too high for new players. They are pooled by default in with the veterans. What this change does is guarantees that you are going to have an influx of new people in PvP. Where are those new people going? Straight for ranked tournaments, the place they least belong. I’ll reserve full judgment here, but I am mildly concerned.
Setting goals for gear
- Although they didn’t give a lot of details, I’m pretty sure I understand what they mean. I think they mean where you identify a piece of gear you wish to obtain and then through a journey of sorts, you obtain it. This is what has been missing in PvP. Currently, it’s just a random mess of gear being dropped all at once, then nothing to work toward after. I love the idea of putting in a lot of hours to achieve a specific item.
Glory being retired as a currency
- This one really has me puzzled. Not that glory is being retired, this is also something I’ve suggested. The weird thing is that it’s being replaced with gold. Who has the most gold? PvE players. Who has the least gold? PvP players. So, what prevents a PvE hero from coming in here and dropping all of their gold on everything day one? Your aesthetics should be a sign of your skill level. The other part of this, and possibly the most concerning, is the fact that gold can be bought with gems. If you have the best rewards tied to gold, and gold bought with gems, doesn’t that mean you can purchase the best rewards in PvP? I’ll have to hear more on this and just hope for the best for now.
Removing Rank
- I personally love this. I think rank in this game was a really bad initially implementation. Rank was gained by glory gained, not winning. The fastest way to gain glory? Farming hotjoins with builds that weren’t conducive to team play. I think the whole rank system is a farce and I’m glad to see it die.
Ladders
- Yes please! This is the true progression. More than gear or anything else, a ladder creates the progression that is the most meaningful…skill progression. You travel through each tier as you get better by playing with people in your same skill range. The top tier people should get the best rewards and when you see someone that has those rewards, you should immediately know that he/she is a beast.
Unknown
So, there are 2 things that I was really hoping to hear in addition to all the other goodies.
- I have hundreds of chests. Should I wait to open them?
- I have a bunch of glory boosters, hundreds of each of the tokens, etc. Is there any plan on finding some way to convert those items to gold or glory? It seems like all of those rank tokens would be completely wasted if there is no way to convert them to a usable currency.
In summary, thanks for the blog. I am hopeful for the things to come. I’m mildly nervous for the time frame (next few months) only because of what that has meant in the past. Hopefully the devs will understand our skepticism with that.
This is a great post, well said.
I think what most people on this thread are saying is that they want a system that rewards time played in spvp as well as a purely competitive based reward system like ladders.
I’m hoping that the new reward system incorporates this, and actually that was the impression I got from the blog, that the rank system will be replaced with a more robust reward system for time played, but we don’t yet know exactly what that system will look like.
Another thing is that simply taking rank away is like taking levels away from players in pve. So hopefully we will get compensation/advanced standing for our current rank in the new system?
That is an extremely good point, it is likely confusing to players new to spvp. Even I instinctually go for the second tab for hotjoin for some reason. And I have seen several players who have said they didn’t mean to join up to solo queue.
My initial reaction about the rewards is “fantastic, now the rest of the game is opened up to me!” Of course a lot will depend on the conversion rate for glory/gold and tomes of xp.
I’m not so keen about ranks going, but it doesn’t matter that much I guess. I can’t understand from the blog how the ladder system is going to pan out exactly so wait-and-see.
I don’t care that some people exploited to get lots of glory. I would prefer those people had their illicit gains rolled back of course, but the important thing is that now the hundreds of hours in spvp I have played will have meaning across the whole game, awesome.
OMG why does the same thread appear before every balance patch?
The big changes are going to be when new game modes are introduced and when spvp is tied into the rest of the game in a meaningful way. If this patch introduces these aspects and does it well then yes it will be a miraculous and game changing event. Oh-removing skyhammer from tourney play would be a big positive as well.
If it just tones down warrior and condition/AI spam etc. then it will be just a run of the mill event.
A positive sign is the great energy we have seen by the devs on the spvp forums of late and the work on fixing the leaderboards. Every dev post I have read, sometimes inexplicably posted in obscure threads, points to a drastic change for the better, if not in this patch then in the near future.
Skyhammer is a troll map filled with cheesey one shot mechanics. The direct opposite of what the pvp crowd wants. The only thing that is missing is a big troll face in the middle of your + your victims screen after you stealth + tripwire someone to its death.
I think that troll face is a great idea, hope it is included in upcoming patch.
I know getting rid of skyhammer permanently from soloQ is out of the question (since the devs want to keep it in), but please at least during this reset period?
Just take it out of solo queue permanently. How many polls, community feedback, people boycotting the map in solo queue, forum posts, players leaving the game are needed before this map gets taken out of tourney play?
Hotjoin is a great innovation, but the choice to make 8vs8 the default option for hotjoin and pretty much hide 5vs5 hotjoin was a very bad decision.
who says yo ucan’t create topics on things you’ve discussed already?
- Read the forum before asking a question. There’s a good chance your question has already been answered.
- Use the search function before posting. This will focus the discussion and facilitate a response.
- Avoid frivolous and duplicate postings.
- Do not spam. This includes bumping threads or making posts that lack content.
Probably not going to get a moderator on you, but it is preferred.
Use the search function?
Is there a trick to using the search function? No matter what I do, even copy pasting the thread title and searching the proper forum – there’s no way to get any search results.
Yes it makes it difficult to search once a thread moves off the first few pages.
BTW-I agree that cheesehammer should not be in soloqueue; but an even better feature would be a “ready” prompt 20 secs or so before any solo queue game pops so players can decline (after seeing what map has popped). I believe that is pretty standard fare in competitive games like dota.
(edited by Yasha.5963)
Both good ideas! I believe we normalized player models in Super Adventure Box if I’m not mistaken, so it’s probably something we can look at applying to PvP. As far as rewards, gold would be amazing. We’re currently on making rewards in PvP amazing (“Incredible!”), and I’m sure everyone will love it
They will roll out in steps, though. So when you see one patch, don’t think that it’s the only thing we have planned.
It is absolutely great to hear that you have been thinking about both these issues. Normalized character models would make balance so much better and reduce the asura cheese. Rewards including gold for spvp would again be a fantastic addition.
What I don’t understand however, is how you just casually/randomly throw out forward guidance on two huge issues in spvp that the community has been virtually begging for since launch.
I am so happy to hear this stuff, but I must say it seems so weird that you chose to put such an important revelation in a thread with an ambiguous title from a poster that has made 3 posts in the spvp forum and is saying exactly what so many others have said (and just as or more clearly) since launch.
This is like the biggest news I have heard since “new game mode”!
hurrr durrr i play hotjoin 8 vs 8 only so i no experience 4 vs 5.
well mostly, sometimes when a new map starts i.e. raid of the capricorn not many players from previous round remains so the games starts off as 4 vs 5 but thank goodness for hotjoin’s drop in and drop out technology it quickly became 7 vs 8 or even full game 8 vs 8 and everyone had fun killing each other again. yay.
some people enjoying capping though.
i enjoy running back and forth the cannon balls, shooting cannons at the blop of people fighting on the cap. sometimes they use reflection and i eat my own cannons. duh!
Pretty sure the OP is talking about solo-queue tourney.
And you are nerfing warrior damage. And conditions already do nothing to this lame build. Always running fast, dodging, healing like a boss. And immune to all condis. With blocks. And knockbacks. So you cant even bunker vs them. Even with a guardian.
Engi (bunker) is the ultimate NO SKILL lame class in this game. They close their eyes all game and push far and cause huge problems. Dealing with them is a nightmare. I feel helpless vs them at times. It sucks. And its so lame.
Please nerf healing turret and make that trait with immunity worse by making it 90% decrease in condi duration
I agree, way too much easily applied damage and cc for the extreme survivability on such builds.
This map pops so often it makes me think Anet wants to drive away their players. Whenever I play hotjoin I end up leaving the game if this map pops and if it pops on a soloQ I log off and play another game.
Lol, that is exactly what I do!
“6) Justin conducted a poll on whether players preferred 8vs8 or 5vs5, and when I looked at it, the overwhelming majority wanted just 5vs5.”
that is just referring to the “Play Now” button and not as a whole.“but maybe you guys can just hide it cleverly like you did with 5vs5?”
as long as i can find the official anet 8 vs 8 hotjoin servers with the custom filter then it should be fine. at least those who wanna play in 8 vs 8 still can do so.
Yes you are right, it was about “play now”, but note that the overwhelming majority- and I am not exaggerating when I say “overwhelming”- was for “play now” to direct players ONLY to 5vs5 games.
I agree 8vs8 should still be an option, but if it is hidden as well as 5vs5 was you will be in for some lonely games.
I think your description of a team spamming aoe conditions on downed is a bigger problem than SON.
Couple of points.
1) As Justin said, more players are pushed into 8vs8 when they press “play now” due to some kind of bug.
2) The 8vs8 servers are at the top of the list, so people are more inclined to play them.
3) The 8vs8 servers are more likely to have free spots with a decent number of players in a game because of the above two points and due to the larger number of players.
4) The game’s UI has always favoured pushing players into 8vs8 in hotjoin; 5vs5 servers were even more inaccessible in the past.
5) When players from other areas of the game who are not familiar with the somewhat clumsy spvp UI server, let alone know that the game is balanced around 5vs5, come they will take the path of least resistance- leading them to 8vs8.
6) Justin conducted a poll on whether players preferred 8vs8 or 5vs5, and when I looked at it, the overwhelming majority wanted just 5vs5.
If we reversed all the, imo, regrettable design decisions that have pushed players into 8vs8 since launch I have no doubt that 5vs5 would be the most played game type.
Probably taking 8vs8 out altogether would be one of the easiest ways to boost the quality of this part of the game, but maybe you guys can just hide it cleverly like you did with 5vs5?
I thought the CDI on game modes was well done, it had a good balance of mod-interaction and you ended the discussion at an appropriate time imo.
I like the polls that have been popping up in a few dev/community manager threads to gauge player sentiment on various aspects of the game.
I would like to see a follow up on what decisions had been made by the devs based on the a particular CDI. I don’t really know what the devs have in mind based on the game mode CDI. For example you could set a timeline after the CDI had concluded to brief the community on the definite direction you will be taking based on that CDI. It is important for the community to see concrete results of the process.
I agree that focused topics are essential to make the process work. As mentioned above the time to post for gamemode CDI was good- too long and you lose momentum.
The next discussion should be on rewards in spvp.
PVE gear (for WvW) should be attainable through spvp, but definitely not in the way you are suggesting. As others have pointed out most of your suggestions would encourage bad gameplay.
The only “fair” way to reward such items is by points accumulated or perhaps matches won or current spvp titles/ranks unlocked. Sure there is an element of grind to that, but pve is also basically about grind and rewarding players for long participation in the game is not a bad thing.
In fact this is the only game where my dedication to the game from launch and many hundreds of hours playing (spvp) rewards me with virtually nothing in game. That is one of the biggest issues with the spvp part of the game, in addition to lack of game modes. The issue is compounded because WvW is the other pvp part of the game, but dedication to pvp (in spvp) does not give any heads up into that part of the game.
Basically, playing spvp is just a mini game totally cut off from the rest of GW2 and you actually handicap yourself by playing it for extended periods.
I have always thought spvp was a lot of fun, it just gets boring doing conquest all the time.
In terms of making it an “esport”; I think it was a fairly ambitious to try and make conquest into an esport as opposed to taking an existing popular esport game type, like MOBA, and making a GW version of it.
Conquest doesn’t seem to have captured players’ imagination in terms of an esport and I’m not sure that any balance changes or new maps will alter that.
Can they come up with a new game mode that will catch on as an esport? Or is it better to just make some fun new game modes and not worry too much about the esports part?
Congrats, you are the most skilled player in GW2.
I’m doing this from now on. If anyone sticks up for this map it’s because you run the full bs build on either a necro or engi.
Well, there is no choice really- you either play the cheese map for 10-15 mins or log out and take a break for that time. For me logging out is much more enjoyable.
I know what you are saying Never, but for example I have a guardian build that has condition removal/reversal on all utilities and heal, but I still get overwhelmed with conditions.
Sometimes its not just the conditions themselves but the way they are applied- aoe on places you have to step on, difficult or impossible to dodge etc.
Then as mentioned above, many (most/all?) condition builds are also tanky, dishing out big aoe damage through conditions.
Lol.
(1) You lose 80% of games and only fall from rank 30 to rank 115????- I have won 8 games in a row and only advanced from 82% to 86%.
(2) Unlucky? People rushing home? How about three people capping home together at the start of games?
(3) As far as I can tell that leaderboard rank is an even worse indicator of skill than normal rank. I have had games at around rank 80-90% (where I seem to be stuck at) with two full teams of rank 40-50+ players and everyone playing very well. Then I see some pve dude at like rank 50 on the leaderboards with 12 games or something played.
(4) Now you know what everyone has been complaining about on the forums!
What’s your point?
Four points can’t u read?
After the MMR shuffle was released, my team members in solo Q seem to be lacking common sense, some constantly rush far only to get repeatedly killed over and over by the enemy ranger that is just STANDING on the point. Very low priority is taken into the defence of home-point. Some players just rush far when we need them for the teamfight.
Some even rush for orbs when the enemy has 3 points capped. I only seem to get ONE reasonable player in my team per match. Last game, players were so shuffled around in the map, that a we almost lost a 4v5.
Could this be a bug? Or is the lack of players for Solo Arena so bad and am just unlucky with what I get grouped with. I’ve been loosing ~80% of my games, and dropped from position 30 to ~115 on the LBs.
Lol.

The people that hate skyhammer refuse to adapt their build . Bring CC and stability , I know you give up on some stuff but knocking people off the cliff is fun . Skyhammer is my favourite map and I don’t want it to be removed it from the game . I always win on skyhammer , 75% W\L ratio on that map , it’s where my build shines , a full CC warrior
what if my class doesn’t have stability…. nor really good CCs?
For thief its good to steal fear off necros, then shadow step into a group while stealthed and trigger the fear. I have knocked 3 people off the map like that.
However, knowing the cheesy moves just reconfirms how silly it is to have that map in a ranked game (ie. solo queue). I can avoid it in normal hotjoin very easily, but have to leave my team short when it pops in SQ.
I feel for you Michael, and what you say about rank is very true.
It is kind of “cool” these days to say “rank means nothing”, but your take on it is 100% correct. Nearly everyone that has played to rank 40+ is decent at least, they have played 100s of hours of spvp and probably across many classes.
Meanwhile, there are some very talented players under rank 20, but most are still just learning the ropes (unless they played a lot of WvW in which case they could be good at their class).
Its probably more accurate to say that “solo leaderboard rank means nothing” than “rank means nothing” at the moment at least. So I understand the frustration you are feeling having to play with low ranked players- these days normal 5vs5 hotjoin feels a lot more skill based than solo queue if you get a run on a good server.
Ok guys… I feel sorry for you so I’m gonna spoon feed you with the most atrociously effective Skyhammer build I’ve seen yet.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUlIqicn1SfF87IyoHdmotZgekX+1IKqQ+B-TkAA1CnIqRVjrGTNyas1M+A
If you can run this and use it effectively, you can get at least 8 kills from using the glass and sides per match.
You seem to have misunderstood. Most people who play pvp a lot know and likely use cheese builds for the cheese map.
What you have posted is actually a reason why I will not play this map in tpvp.
Ranger’s Signet skills:
When entering to Spvp room (already started/ hot join), the signets do not provide their passive effects. Even I am in combat, died and res.I don’t want to change my skills then change it back to get my passive.
I use Signet Mastery and Signet of the Beastmaster Traits.See also:
Ranger-Pet-Fern-Hound-and-Canines-F2
Bug-Ranger-s-Signets-in-SPvP
I have never noticed this. What should I be noticing from your screen shot other than you have three signets equipped?
This was a good poll, thanks. I hope you use the info to make relevant changes.

It has nothing to do with it. I have a full-cc warrior as well. Still hate the cheesy map.
Your comment shows that you have not listened whatsoever to the concerns raised by other players about this map.
No can do. No map is so bad that I’d feel okay about causing a 4v5.
I don’t suggest anyone else does it, I just want to communicate that the map is so bad for tpvp that I would rather not play GW2 at all than be forced to play it. Many other players have said a similar thing, but maybe the message hasn’t gotten through.
I refuse to play skyhammer map in tpvp anymore, it is just a waste of time.
I would like it if there was a way to decline a game that I have queued for once I see that skyhammer has popped in solo queue so that someone else could be chosen in my place.
I don’t care what the penalty is, even if my account got deleted- I will just quit this map whenever it pops.
For reasons see the numerous complaint threads about this map.
My 30/30/10 zerk ranger: http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-Fg-o;1sEkx-d2JEV-0;9F5E;1TT9;007909B2;6U-k0;2G3G3G3G35Bn
I used to run almost exactly that build at launch (except I used short bow instead of GS). I thought it was quite strong if I was left alone, but certain death once focused. I would love to see how you play it.
Nah man. I guess I’m on a “top” team and I often run a 30/30/10 zerker build.
What role do you play in your team Eurantien? I am assuming it is not HP bunker with that build?
To OP- I think rangers are great; what build do you run to hold HP with?
…………..Engineers. Really I am sad they intend to buff engi healing which is almost impossible to counter and so skilless and lame. Let us think about the lamo engi bunker builds:
1, Healing turret gives alot of healing for a short CD
2, The cast time on healing turret is too short not allowing any pros to counter play it
3, Multiple engis can blast into each others water fields and ruin everyones day
4, Engis just have to spec into a passive/no skill trait and then they cant be killed by condis
5, Engis has so many lame knock backs, blinds and other bs.
6, Bunker engi is just a no-skill spam build. It isnt fun to play against at all. At least a bunker guardian you can actually hit and kill eventually. These are the facts as far as I see them.
Please don’t nerf warrior dps, necro dps, and other damage and leave this engi heal the same or improve it. It is just lame.
Discuss.
Yes, well said. I don’t understand how people consider engi a skill-based class (at least the bunker types-builds).
I think these type of tanky builds with seemingly near spammable aoe condition damage are quite OP. Take your example of guardian- very hard to kill a bunker guardian, but I rarely feel pressured by them-that is balanced imo. Bunker engis on the other hand can kick your butt and take on 2 players-ie unbalanced.
OK good to know; ty!
The boons applied by my pets do not seem to increase at all when I use this trait (concentration training). Also my +% boon bonus from the nature magic tree does not seem to be applied.
Is this a bug?
They will roll out in steps, though. So when you see one patch, don’t think that it’s the only thing we have planned.
