Problem fixed after downloaded gpu-z and did some googling on the things mentioned there.
The problem was that when I had installed samsung magician for inspecting ssd, it had added its own power usage plan, when i switched back to “high performance” problem disappeared.
As the title says. The thing is that this only happen when guild wars 2 window is active, if i click another program on another screen, fps rises instantly.
first image is screenshot taken in game
second is taken with gyazo when some other window is active
and third is normal fullscreen
No matter what, fps does not rise over 19/20 even with vertical sync on and with any graphical settings.
Sometimes if i have drawing tablet connected and remove it while game is on, the fps “lock” seems to disappear. It was not connected during these screenshots.
It was working properly earlier this year but i can’t remember exactly when this started to happen.

Going to post my initial impressions here so whole forum is not full of these threads.
The biggest problem that i also mentioned before, as almost everyone else, is the clunky feeling of staff and evades, both animation and mechanical.
Second thing is that while i played pvp with staff, i just had all the time this “why even use staff” question in my head. Sure it has nice burst in form of vault and other small things, but eh.
Staff:
1# Damage is not terrible but not very good either, has pretty weak utility. Also god kitten that flying staff is annoying me.
2# This one is actually pretty good, it deals decent damage if you turn your camera down and shorten the distance traveled, and applies a lot of weakness which is a strong condition and comes at reasonable ini cost of 3. Problem is that it just feels bad to use this skill because of the clunkiness, you travel to the direction you are facing ingoring target, and the animation at least on asura just looks lame. (someone suggested using using “butterfly twist”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahOFZ-to8XY, that would be much much better)
3# Not much to say about this, would rather have the evade start right away instead of whacking your enemy first with your staff. But i would had really preferred to have a skill that lets me stick to the fight, not take distance to my enemy.
4# Amount of hits this skill deals seems to wary randomly. Not much to say about this either other than it is way way too slow for what it does. also has pretty painfull cost of 4 ini.
5 # This is “the” skill of staff, very high damage and travels quite a nice distance in horizontal direction. Was really hoping to also get plenty of vertical mobility but that doesn’t seem to be the case, sadly. A bit too slow at the moment.
Many of the skills aren’t bad if the usability is fixed, but it stills leaves me with the question “why”. What is staff supposed to achieve that sword/dagger already doesn’t do, as it certainly lacks some things like superior mobility and boon steal.
I’m not going to go more in depth staff nor utilities now because I’m tired.
Also, dust strike seems hits once or twice seemingly randomly when using it on unbreakable golem
I agree, it is too clunky in its current state.
That also applies to the new dodges, all of them seem to have some kind of annoying start up delay.
Looks very interesting, but i’m a bit worried about the staff.
I’m not sure if it’s going to do enough to be good in spvp, and in pve dagger is still definitely going to deal more damage (unless we get crazy damage buffs).
Also on the multi hit utility thing, imo the after hit of palm strike should be able to crit, or at least deal a lot more damage considering how easy it is to miss hits due to all kind of random things. Also lets be honest, 2k base damage is very weak if it cannot crit. On the interrupt trait it is fine because you can spam it much more and it is easier to proc.

What the hell it is with mmo players always whining about their game dying when it is completely false.
If kitten like dekaron ( very very old and outdated game ) and allods ( insane p2w bullkitten ) haven’t died yet, it is practically impossible for this game to do so.
It has nothing to do with “elitism”, people simply have done the same runs so many times that they don’t want it to take longer for no reason.
Also sometimes it is not even about the time it takes to create optimal party and finish the run, it just is much much more fun and feels great when you complete a run, say fotm 50 or 40 where everyone knows their role and does what is expected from them fast and cleanly.
Same problem for me, sometimes i manage to log in but can’t load any of the maps.
You people are still fighting over this? what in the actual kitten.
It doesn’t matter what any of you think about it, anet has definitely already decided what we get and we just have to live with it.
What the hell are you playing, if you have proper build for wvw roaming (and no, a full zerk is not that unless playing thief or so), skills and such, you can stay alive for a pretty kitten long. Also wvw is not fair and is not supposed to be, play spvp if you want fair games.
i’m not sure what is the right amount, but 20 is too low.
They are one of the rarest and most unique weapons, getting something like that should take a good chunk of time.
And for people saying they should be really cheap because prestige doesn’t matter in games or some bullkitten like that, making people work towards something, whatever is the exact reason, is one of the most common ways of keeping people playing, giving stuff for too easily would be stupid as kitten.

Hello, I am new to thief (to GW2 in general, this is my first post on the forums
) and I am looking for advice. So far, I have mostly played sPvP and PvE (mostly open world).
PvE:
I have seen on guides that the preferred build is D/D, and honestly not sure how. So far I had most success with S/D. D/P seems to perform better as well. Not sure what I am missing.
Dagger has overall better dps, and d/d if preferred over d/p because you can autoattack chain -> cloak and dagger -> backstab -> auto chain -> cloak and dagger and so on, the reveleaded debuff disappears just before the second cnd lands. and heartseeker spam deals crazy damage when boss is at low hp.
Though optimally you would swap between d/p and d/d depending on situation.
sPvP:
First, nothing but D/P is working. I already scanned through the thief forums and it seems that it is not just me. S/P can’t hit and has no survivability. D/D requires so much emphasis on being in melee range and one missed cloak and dagger and you are toast. SB is usually alt weapon, but just for mobility and some aoe. Does anything else work?
You got it pretty right here, sadly we don’t really have any other good builds than d/p for pvp at this moment. Some builds like s/d and d/d can work but it is always an uphill battle.
What do you do against heavy condition builds? Again, from all classes I played thief has the worst condition removal paired lowest hp pool and blinds do not perform very well against condition builds.
Another reason why d/p is the most common build, our main condi removal is Shadow’s Embrace which can be found from shadow arts line. Shadow step it also good emergency condi removal. Then you have some more situational things like healing spring that you can steal from ranger
What stats should I use for D/P build? I am currently using Mara amulet and eagle runes.
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Thief_-_Dagger/Pistol
Also, for utilities I am using Signet of Shadows, Blinding Powder and Shadow Refuge, plus Basilisk Venom for elite. I want to remove blinding powder in particular, but I cant find any other utility that is more useful in sPvP.
The most common utility bar you see it withdraw-blinding powder-shadow refuge- shadow step.
You should ditch the signet of shadows and use shadow step instead, which is probably one of the best utility skills in the game, and if you want, you can use infli signet instead of blinding powder.
For pve you can just go crit signet, power signet and haste.
Also a side note, blinding powder is a blast finisher, so if you use it in smoke field you get even more stealth.
For game play in sPvP, so far I have been largely successful, 20 wins in 30 games. I try to avoid crowds and attack the least populated areas. In large battles, again low hp pool, between aoe and conditions I get burnt down easily. Not sure that I am doing something wrong, but playing on the fringes so far has been much more profitable.
The role of thief is to move around the map quickly, capping empty points, bursting low hp targets and ganking enemies, making fights 2v1. You can 1v1 other classes ( as long as they are not heavy condi builds) but it is usually not worth the time.
If you have problems in large fights, take a look at the map, if there are empty points you should probably go cap them.
Finally (this not tied to a specific game mode), I find it unreasonable that thief has about 25% less hp than medium hp pool and 45% less hp than heavy hp pool. I was one shotted so many times in PvE and in sPvP, if I am not super careful not to get in the thick of things, I can die so easy. Forget using berzerker in sPvP. Is it just my lack of experience or is it a class issue? Granted, high hp pool does not mean great survivability, but it can help avoid burst damage, especially when it is not avoidable or really hard to avoid.
Surviving with thief just requires quite a bit more skill than with many other classes, positioning especially is very important. Also zerker amulet in pvp isn’t really used, it is too squishy for even experienced players. Also don’t forget to abuse stealth in pvp.

The first thing that comes to mind is to let us have some playstyle that doesn’t absolutely need stealth. Old s/d was something like that but got nerfed.
Also the profession mechanic could be a bit different, it is strong currently, but not because of the actual thing you steal, but for the crap load of other things that you get from it while traited. Though i don’t have any specific ideas how it should be changed.
(edited by Zaerah.1630)
The changes you suggest are too dramatic and change the overall feel of the class too much. A lot of people would be unhappy with these changes, me included.
And obv the numbers you are suggesting would be horribly overpowered.
Not easy, just somewhat viable against competent people without having to combo it with more expensive skills.
I’m not talking about a large one like 900, but something around 400-300 would make it a bit easier to land as in my opinion the biggest problem with the skill is the unreliability when compared to bp->hs for example.
Yes, people get kicked for using some builds or classes, but usually that is because they don’t read the lfg or are just stubborn.
I personally kick people very very rarely because i only do fracts 40 and 50 and at that point people know what to do without you having to tell them(usually). I don’t even mind some occasional rangers or necros, assuming the first point still stands.
Of course that only goes to some extend, while it may not be horrible to have one person with uncommon build or class who knows what to do, the reduced speed really starts to show up when you have more than that.
I agree, but i think that all damage should be reduced by 50% in spvp to promote build variety and you would have to chain cc properly to get enemies off the point to cap it.
Also thief and mesmer need to be fixed, there is literally no counterplay.
Stop feeding the kittening trolls.
To do well in wvw you need to run sa+acro+trickery… You can’t take damage trait lines…
Well that is pure bullkitten.
It is pretty amusing that stealth is probably the most hated mechanic in the game, but anet made it even better than before and now every thief can run full SA where previously you had to sacrifice damage for it.
And at the same time they nerfed the non stealth builds. Go figure.
Yeah, i have been trying to make it work during the past days but can’t, it just feels weak.
Acro is pretty kittenty at the moment, especially against all the condi spam. Guarded initiation looks like a good trait on first glance, but you are never above the 90% hp when you actually need to get rid of them.
So then you pretty much have to go shadow arts, and i hate cloak’n’dagger. Against idiots it works well but is painful to use against good players. At least with d/p you don’t have to rely on your enemies actions and you can enter stealth when you want to.
I don’t think acro is that bad, we did lose a lot of survivability but gained a bit more offensive power from it.
But I do think that the real problem is to make the new acro work with some build, i feel like it alone isn’t enough for defense, especially against all the condi spam flying around now.
If that means we don’t have to spend gold on them anymore, thank kitten.
Current trait system is imo by far the worst thing that has happened to this game
I think people are way over reacting to this…
It would be easier to explain if you linked the video.
The most basic combo is black powder to heart seeker which gives you stealth, if you point your camera straight to ground, the heart seeker has shorter range and is easier to stack multiple times on one field.
About the combo, it may be that he used black powder, then used heart seeker from the field to hit enemy while gaining stealth, starting the backstab animation and using traited steal before the attack hits.
Also if you are stealthed and use shadow shot, you can chain it instantly with backstab if you start the bs animation before the shadowshot lands.
All the skills can be used with steal too, if you have low hp enemy running away, you can use heartseeker and just before the the attack hits, you use steal to get next to your enemy and land the hit.
4 ini cost on steal would be just stupid, i agree that it would be nice to not have all eggs in one basket, but ini cost is a completely wrong way to fix that “problem”

Person who made the song made reddit thread for it, i reposted it here because i think it is great .

It is not very convincing to start with " i have been leveling up x class" and then start telling how the class should be changed…
Shortbow is absolutely fine as it is, it has crazy good utility pve and pvp wise and good damage unless you are trying to use clusterbomb from max distance. There is a reason why you see every thief using it in every gamemode.
I don’t think the stealth reliance is a problem either, a lot of people really like that way of play and there are surely ways to make class interesting even if anet have to always balance it around stealth. And then there are builds like s/d which is still really good, and less common builds like d/d condi which is also better than many expect it to be, that use stealth very little.
Getting full exotics is not even grind.
í have the same feeling with my ele, sometimes it feels like my only underwater elite is the only skill which deals damage, actually so much that it’s just stupid
This maybe has been reported already, but anyway.
When i move camera too close to the ground (doesn’t happen with wall), all the terrain close to me turns transparent.

This bug appeared right after i downloaded the latest drivers for my gpu (nvidia GTX 670, driver version 306.23)
I would like to see fast fix to this, it’s sometimes annoying as hell when you try to get to vistas or when in a limited space.

i’m seriosly getting enough of this kitten whine all over the forums, if you don’t like the game, quit it, most of the players give a zero kitten if you don’t like something,.
and if you actually have some ideas to make game better instead of whining, there is a place for that :|
e: lol this censoring
I think elementalist is just fine, sure you can’t do as much raw damage than warrior for example, but you have a lot of other tricks.
And if you want to solo mobs easier, build toughness or something.
I leveled up with crit based ele which i didn’t really like because of the squishiness ( and no, you can’t dodge everything) and maxium of mobs i could solo alone was something like 2 (70-79, with full lvl 70 yellow gear)
But now when i have max lvl ele with full yellow cleric set ( power, toughness, healing power) and i can easily solo 4 or more mobs, depending of the type.
E: and imo also more usefull in dungeons, with staff my 3 and 5 heal something like 7-8k combined
