In ten years of playing MMOs I’ve never found a Korean MMO worth sticking to. It always ends up in flames, one way or another. Not to mention that BnS is even older than GW2, with the only shining point of it being the combat. It’s pretty mediocre in every other aspect by today’s standards.

“It’s already enstablished in Korea” is actually a point against it. Korean standards are very different from western ones, and pretty much every single major MMO in Korea flopped in the west so far.

Black Desert is looking even worse. Spectacular graphics and character creation, and incredibly shallow gameplay.

Shinryuku didn’t quit, he’s simply taking a break with streaming, since it’s seriously straining him. He’s probably still going to stream every now and then, but without a fixed schedule and much less often.

The Warrior state probably didn’t help, though. He was kinda forced to play Tempest to stay competitive and it definitely looked like he wasn’t enjoying it as much.

It has been tested quite a bit, but the general consesus is that it just doesn’t work too well – like most of the PvP options the Warrior currently has. It does pretty good damage but not enough to fit into the current bunker meta, and it leaves you pretty squishy.

Still, some people in low-medium MMR have been able to do pretty well with it.

When are warriors going to be useful again?

I’m guessing you’re talking PvP, right?
Just play some PvE while we wait for the balance patch in february.

At the moment Warriors – more specifically Berserkers – are basically the raid gods. I’ve seen top guilds doing Raids with no less than 6 berserkers in the group simply because how incredibly effective they are. You can even go tanky and still easily manage 20k dps.

While PvP-wise Warriors are completely and utterly screwed, it’s just a temporary state. Next balance patch will change a lot of things (and probably also nerf condition warrior, so enjoy it while you can) and hopefully make it viable again.

And please don’t threaten to leave the game, it just makes you sound like a kid throwing a fit because his parents don’t buy him a toy.
Do take a break if you don’t feel like playing Warrior in its current state. The game has no subscription, and you can just come back to it in February when the balance patch hits.

Berserker is THE class in PvE (Raids to be more specific) right now, with some of the highest DPS ever seen in game.
And that will probably hurt its PvP side even more. It’s harder to balance a class that is doing amazing in one setting and awful in the other.

One thing’s for sure, we’ll see nerfs to the condi aspect of the Warrior.
Just hope that they’ll actually buff something else in return.

Basically #firstworldproblems compared to the meta history of Mesmer, Ranger and Necro.

Not even close. The game has a supported esport scene with a proleague now, and it simply cannot afford a balance where two entire professions are literally useless.

Only because Rangers and Necros had problems in the past, it doesn’t mean other classes should do as well – the game does NOT need a constant circle of imbalance, and I’m pretty sure no player outside of some salty Ranger/Necro/Mesmer players wishes that.
Not to mention that the current state of Warrior/Thief is arguably even worse than what Ranger and Necro have been through – and this comes from someone that also played Necro since launch.

History of Warrior

Warrior was a popular class pre-HoT in both pve and pvp.

Arenanet thought it would still be in a good spot post-HoT, and the fact that the Warrior playerbase was very healthy meant they could focus more on other professions that needed some attention. As a result Berserker got less development time (which is honestly blindingly obvious) and fell very much behind when so much was added to other classes via specializations. I’m sure Thief got a similar treatment because of how meta the class was pre-HoT.

That’s most probably it. There’s no big conspiracy. They got less attention because they were already popular, and suffered because of it. Hopefully things will change, come the next balance patches…eventually.

My Opinion After Today's Pro League

It’s just a shame that this meta had to be the one for the first proleague – it really threatens to completely kill the GW2 esport scene before it even starts.

Aside from the obvious balance problems – it just makes it boring to look at AND play. I find it fairly funny that tweaks to the visual noise got precedence over everything else, when what there is to see in the first place is mindnumblingly boring.

This proleague NEEDS some small balance patches during its course. Anet cannot afford to leave things as they are until next season, because by then there won’t be anyone left actually watching.

It’s not a secret that Rev is grossly overperforming – which honestly is fairly normal, being the new class of a new MMO expansion. WoW’s Death Knight is a perfect example for that.

It will dominate for a while, and once the HoT sales slow down it will be nerfed and a good chunk of fotm rerollers will leave it for whatever class or specialization is doing best – or simply go back to their original class.

It’s perfectly fine to drop it and play something else if you don’t like being treated like the special kid – I’d suggest picking it up again once the class gets some extra development time and some much needed balance.

It’s a shame that this thread will be hijacked by snarky remarks about balance, but oh well.

For one I’m really grateful of the work they’ve been putting into spvp lately, the mode is finally getting the attention it deserved since the core game’s launch – hopefully this is just a start, as there are many other things that would need improvement or implementation.

As a Warrior player I definitely know that the current balance situation is pretty bad, but balance is a fleeting thing that will definitely eventually change – while brand new additions and overall mechanical improvements are there to stay and should definitely have priority.

Looking to pick up warrior again- questions

I’m guessing you mean what he did to that Necro?

If I’m not looking at it wrong, he used Headbutt + Outrage to break the self stun, went into berserk to activate the taunt trait, then popped axe primal burst, switched to GS and 100bladed the necro into oblivion.

From the weapon swap time, the GS #3 removing the immobilize, the condis being cleansed on weapon swap and the extra quickness it’s very clear that he was running Discipline with Warrior’s sprint, brawler’s recovery and heightened focus.

Judging by the fact that he was gaining might on block and the 2500 heal when he used Outrage, the second spec slot is most probably defense with Shield Mastery, Defy Pain and Rousing Resilience.

For Berserker he was definitely running Smash Brawler, Blood Reaction and Bloody Roar. He could’ve had Dead or Alive instead of Blood Reaction though – even if Dead or Alive isn’t really great.

Couldn’t really say too much on the gear or runes honestly.

If you plan to play mostly PvE, yes. Warriors are still pretty beastly for that.

If you plan to play PvP, absolutely not. Literally any class is better for that at the moment.

Made him a Charr, named Garron Glaiveclaws, liking it a bunch, just need a Pre-Berserker Elite Spec Build, to use until I have it 100% unlocked, any advice on that?

For Pre-zerker, Phalanx Strength GS/Axe-mace Warrior is still amazing for dungeons or general pve play (Strength/Tactics/Arms) while for PvP GS/Hammer and GS/Axe-shield (Strength/Defense/Discipline for both) should kinda maybe work. Sortof.

But really, while leveling and doing zones just go with the flow and experiment. It’ll help you understand the class better and it will be overall a lot more fun.

Get more than 3.5k viewers? Yes.
Actually engage with their community about the viability of conquest before championing it as their premier esports game mode? Yes.
Admit they’ve dun goofed? One can hope.

Still way too early to reliably say that.
3.5k viewers for a single stream when the game itself averages a thousand in total on a good day still isn’t bad – especially since it peaked 7k last week. Anything more would probably count as “exploding”. When we’ll see it dip below the numbers of a dev stream, then I’ll most definitely agree with you.

Not to mention that a lower viewership is to be expected with the current state of the balance and how the games are actually playing out.

Whether it will be worth the 400k they’re spending, it still all has to be decided – but even if it won’t, Anet should definitely be praised for investing so much into pvp and its community. With all the complaining about the balance going around, we’re kinda forgetting that they’re investing hundreds of thousands of dollars towards increasing the pvp community and (hopefully, eventually) making it better – whether it was the best choice or not, the aim is still that.

OH plzzzzz.. after 3 years… we are way ….way… way… pass that excuse. *(rolling my eyes)

3 years of what? Only relatively recently spvp started getting the attention and development it needed and slowly kicking into gear, without even talking about balance. Hell, it still doesn’t have a lot of the features that would actually complete it.

It puts Anet in a bad light for mostly ignoring it early on, but spvp definitely doesn’t have 3 years of good support behind its back. It might be a 3 year old kid, but it’s still a kid.

I’m comparing a major guild wars 2 tournament to another esports celebrity testing his computer…and the latter won. Regardless of how riveting it is to watch someone test his computers, these numbers are not something Arenanet should be proud of.

An esport celebrity of one of the biggest esports in the world – and a famous streamer to top that off. Still not a fair comparison. And the actual stream content matters less than you’d think – I’m pretty sure that if Lirik made a stream completely about picking his nose, he’d still get 20-30k viewers.

Guild Wars 2 never had a huge Twitch following (even if it does MUCH better than a lot of other games), it’s unreasonable to expect it to suddenly explode. Seeing how these tournaments can bring in five times the viewers the game has normally, it’s not a bad start as you might think. As I said, it will just take time and care from this point forward.

Because comparing literally the biggest esports games in the world to GW2 is definitely a fair comparison. Please.

Try looking up other competitive games numbers like fighting games, and you’ll see they’re not that far off from the viewers GW2 is currently making with proleague (if not lower), outside really big events.

GW2’s pvp is literally still in its infancy and it still has balance problems. It needs time and care to grow – if it will grow, of course.

I call it being a smart consumer. Nothing confrontational or aggressive about his post. And withholding his money won’t have any effect? In the aggregate it sure will because he’s not alone. And there’s no guarantee that spending more money on the expansion or in the gem store will result in anything he wants from the game.

You can’t buy balance, so you can’t really be a balance consumer, can you?

If someone decided to boycott the gem store because of questionable microtransaction decisions from Anet, say for example their recent trend of bundling stuff together instead of selling it separately, then I’d understand – and Anet would clearly see that too.

But this simply makes zero sense and has zero impact on the pvp situation. It’s like boycotting oranges because you don’t like carrots – yes they’re both orange, but they have literally nothing else in common.

Want to boycott PvP? Don’t play PvP. It’s as simple as that.
Anet can very clearly see the pvp numbers and will notice.

And if a guy inciting a boycott isn’t confrontational, I don’t know what is.

Charr or Norn?

It’s hard to give advice on something so subjective, but here goes.

I tend to find Norn extremely boring, as they’re basically just big humans, with the problem of armor stretching and clipping added to them. Lore-wise they’re also not that interesting. If you go Norn, might as well go human – less cosmetic problems, better cultural armor (in my opinion), less camera problems in tight spaces. And of course better background story, as GW1 was basically all about humans – even if that means absolutely nothing gameplay-wise.

Between the two, I’d definitely go Charr. They also have cosmetic problems and clipping, but at least they’re different enough – plus they look pretty amazing in heavy armor.

Keep in mind however that if you’re a fan of jumping puzzles, both Norn and Charr can be a total pain in the behind – they tend to make them way more annoying than normal.

The game browser list is hotjoin – i.e. Custom Arenas. There you’ll mostly find people trolling, testing builds, doing duels, screwing around, sometimes hosting weird tournaments and the like.

Unranked/Ranked arena is where people actually play.

It would be pretty sad to introduce pvp leagues without a balance first, at least. Wanna reach top of the ladderboard? Roll anything besides thief and warrior.

Well I’m pretty sure the original plan was to launch the balance patch two weeks before the start of proleague, to give time to the players to absorb the changes – and that didn’t really happen.

So really now it’s a 50/50 chance between us getting a big balance patch on Dec. 1st that will shake the meta and screw over the pro players, or us not getting jack kitten until the next season. Call me negative, but I kinda lean on the latter.

I doubt they made them so unviable on purpose – though it’s very evident that the most played classes (ele, warrior, thief) got the least amount of work and attention to their elite specializations – even if it seems to have worked out at least for the Ele.

They simply didn’t bother too much, especially for the Warrior. Unoriginal and obvious name, uninteresting weapon, new class mechanic that is basically exactly like the core one and no real attention to overall trait synergy or usefulness in PvP. Hell, even the Berserker trait line used a recycled image until very recently-

I’m 100% sure they thought “Hey, Warrior is doing pretty decently, let’s focus our attention on other professions that really need it, I’m sure Warriors will be fine in the end” – And we all know how that ended up.

How to fix PvP

I understand where you’re coming from, but that sounds like a pretty bad idea. That would make conquest basically like deathmatch or arena mode. Courtyard was exactly that, and was hated by almost everyone. Not to mention it would make maps barely different between each other.

Extra elements in a pvp game is what makes the game more engaging and deep. Look at the top competitive games out there and you’ll notice that none of them are straight up player vs player with no side objectives.

If you’re requesting a completely extra mode for pure combat or duels however, then that might work – I was thinking that the Guild Hall arenas could be used for something more official – but changing Conquest in that way is a big no-no for me.

Nerf Warriors, Thieves and Guardians

Doesn’t matter if a profession isn’t good enough to be in the “meta”, the pro players are going to use the classes that are the best because they are playing for money. If that means that everyone would have to be playing one overpowered spec to compete then they would do so because they are playing to win.

Without 8 homogenous classes with simply different skins, there will always be classes that are better than others. Game won’t be perfectly balanced so why would you balance around 0.0001% of players who are going to use the best classes anyway no matter if it’s warrior, thief, guard, etc. kind of like how you see a bunch of rangers and necs now.

Uh, because that’s how a competitive game works.
If there are “best” classes and “worthless” classes, that means the game is simply broken.
Obviously the meta is going to favor a certain playstyle and certain builds at different times, but each class should be at least viable. And it’s pretty evident that Warrior and Thief are nowhere close to that.

The aim of any player should be to get better, not to just passively play the same way without ever learning anything. It’s completely pointless to balance things around the skill of beginners or casual pvpers, when the game itself is pushing you to become better than that by supporting the pro scene and hosting tournaments.

Nerf Warriors, Thieves and Guardians

Who cares what classes were used in pro leagues. What population of the player base is “pro”? 0.0001%?

Apparently Arenanet, or they wouldn’t have hosted a $400k pro tournament.

You balance things around people that can use them at full potential, not around people that barely know what the dodge button is. And when the competitive scene COMPLETELY ignores one profession because of how unviable it is (in the case of the Warrior) and barely plays another because it ends up being a burden (in the case of the Thief) it doesn’t take much to realize that something is a bit off.

I’d probably have less problems with it and just dismiss it as a “temporary imbalance” if there wasn’t a proleague going on and spvp wasn’t being currently pushed as esports.

EU Pro League Meta

Uh, yes it is? You said that you find more alarming the fact that they’ve been meta for so long and that Anet didn’t give them different roles or playstyles. Which means you’re more worried about them having an almost mandatory albeit limited place in the meta, than them not having a place at all (like it currently is).

Ok? So you don’t feel good about it, but you’d be more bothered if previous non-meta professions were in the current place of War/Thief, because they already had problems in the past. Meaning you do feel better about those previous non-meta professions not being in the place of War/Thief.

No, clases don’t deserve to be benched or unplayable but I didn’t see many thieves shedding a tear when almost every mesmer main in high tier switched to thief 2 years ago and stayed like that till spec patch.

No profession player ever shed a tear for the trouble another profession is in – at best they acknowledged it. And to be honest, I don’t really see how this is relevant anyway.
It just seems like you have some sort of small grudge against Warriors and Thieves because they already had a really good place in the meta previously.

If I’m just interpreting what you’re saying in a bad way then I’m sorry, I’m honestly not doing that on purpose. They’re just the ideas your post seems to imply.

That said we both agree on the fact that they can’t stay in this state for long – but the problem is that HoT has already been out for a month now, and many of these problems were identified in the feedback of the beta, if not even before that. That feedback was ignored, and the devs have been silent. And with proleague shining a bright light on how dire the War/Thief situation is and the state of spvp because of it, an outcry is the least you can expect. This isn’t just a War/Thief problem, but about the credibility of a supposedly competitive tournament as well.

Warrior 20K Gun flame hit, really??

Talk about sticking fingers in your ears and ignoring facts. Just go to a custom arena and do a gunflame with the zerker build (i.e. using all signets and +damage bonuses) against a celestial ele with protection up. You’re gonna hit for 16ish k.

It’s 100% reproducable so YOU GUYS stop sticking fingers in your ears.

Hello? We know it’s possible to hit 20k. It has already been proven on this thread – even if just against golems in absolute perfect conditions (which are way less probable in an actual pvp match) and only after multiple tries.

What has also been proven and what you seem to wishfully ignore is that to do that THE WARRIOR NEEDS TO USE HIS HEAL, ALL UTILITIES AND ELITE, AND HAS TO HOPE HE’S GOING TO HIT AND CRIT, ALL WHILE BEING GLASSY WITH NO DEFENSE. Everything for a SINGLE. SHOT. And then be useless.

It’s an AWFUL gimmick build that sacrifices everything to build might on yourself and vulnerability on the enemy – and that boon and condition are the MAIN reasons why it can hit that hard. You could build the same amount of might and vulnerability and use some other skill instead of gunflame and reach very similar numbers – which has also been proven in this thread.

Please stop embarassing yourself.

I just don’t care tbh either way. Don’t you find it alarming that for nearly 3 years straight thief was mandatory on nearly all top tier teams? I’m a lot more alarmed at that and the way ANet have allowed that to happen and introduced 0 other roles or playstyles for thieves.

So you’d rather have a class with close to zero roles instead of a single important one?

sure would love to see all classes represented equally but I’m just not bothered by classes that have spent years solidly in meta in one way or another suddenly not being meta for what will be 2-3 months(?) till the next big balance patch. Sure if these classes hadn’t been top picks for every team for so long I’d feel different but they have for a very very long time.

Sorry, but if you feel better about Warrs and Thieves being outside the meta simply because they’ve been popular classes in the past, that’s just Schadenfreude.
Players shouldn’t be punished for the previous balance that was created by the devs.
And who says they’ll be in this state for only 2-3 months? Many of their problems aren’t superficial and could need a sizeable rework to make them viable again.

Lets not forget the years of rangers and necros not being meta at all or that mesmer had to have a whole team built around it and even then spent more time running for their lives from one class than being able to play for over a year too.

I think I can speak for everyone (being a longtime Necro player as well) that those situations shouldn’t repeat themselves simply because Ranger and Necro had big problems in the past. Precedents don’t make this ok, for any profession.

Sorry didn’t mean completely unwarranted, but when almost every thread on here is about how kittened warriors are…..

That’s the worst part, they’re annoying but technically right.

Warrior could be deleted from the game tomorrow, and the current competitive esports scene would not be affected in the slightest. That’s how kittened warriors are.

But it’s just aggravating seeing a thousand threads repeating the same things over and over and over. If Anet posted a thread saying “OK WE GET IT, WE’RE AWARE, STOP REPEATING YOURSELVES”, then maybe we would see less complaining threads – but probably not.

Because I have a guard, I enjoy both and both offer different experiences, I’m not saying wars aren’t underpowered compared to other classes, but the amount of complaining ive been seeing isn’t warranted imo. As far as utility, not every class has the level of utility that guards have.

Oh, the complaining is definitely warranted. It’s just annoying.

Not every class might have the utility a Guardian has, but most other classes have the utility the Warrior has, and much more. There are close to no roles Warriors can fill in the current meta, and absolutely none of them are something other classes can’t fill better and with less drawbacks.

The real problem is that the vast majority of Warrior players (me included when I sometimes get frustrated, I’m not pointing fingers) would rather cry and demand buffs on the forums instead of proposing constructive criticism and feedback to Anet, which is the reason why the outcry is so big and so ignored by the devs.

I wonder, if you guys would like to have site/blog with all the stuff about competitive side of GW2? With all the builds, replays and everything in one place?

To be honest, I’m surprised that with all this “esports” talk a site like that doesn’t exist already.

Warrior is still perfectly viable against low-to-medium skill opponents and teams that are not premade. In fact I would almost say they’re good in those circumstances.

In a competitive environment, they have literally zero use, as anything else in the game is a direct upgrade.

I’m happy that some people enjoy the class (as I do too) but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re competitively garbage at the moment. Look at the EU proleague matches: not even a single Warrior represented. And it’s been that way since HoT hit for any remotely competitive tournament.

Edit: Of course, this is just about PvP. In PvE Berserker is actually pretty good, though what really makes them worthwhile are the banners and not much else.

They let the meta go for a year and a half without a single Ranger team winning any tournament of note, good luck to you.

Winning is one thing – being played at all is another.

Warriors and Thieves are so absurdly far behind that no one even bothers.

Apparently this is the balance an esports game deserves.

I wouldn’t really call the meta “balanced” when 2 classes out of 9 are completely out of it.

But yes, there are definitely heavy hints of power creep in this meta, and the fact that it’s also not equally distributed between the professions makes it even worse.

What really worries me is how Anet decided to not make any change whatsoever before the start of proleague.

Which leads me to think they believe the class is balanced as it is.

And if that’s the case, Warrior will be a dead class for a long, long time.

Thief is in a bad spot right now against high skilled enemies or in a competitive environment, but it’s absolutely fine for new players.

Conquest is very straightforward: hold points to gather score, and win the game. Each map has a different gimmick to it that gives you other ways to get score, but focusing on the points should always be your top priority. Prioritize that at the start and you’ll learn the maps while really helping out your team.

Stronghold is a bit more complicated, but simply sticking to your lane and using the supply you get to spawn doorbreakers is perfectly ok for a beginner.

If you mean not knowing what to do with your class, no worries. I’d suggest checking out metabattle.com for a thief build and practicing it on AI opponents inside the Heart of the Mists: they are slightly to the north from where you enter. Eventually you’ll want to modify your gear and build to suit your needs, but it’s perfectly fine to start out with an enstablished build.

You do realize how many buttons the gun flame warrior has to press right?

f2 then f1? LOL.

The Warrior has to burn all his utilities, heal and elite to have the CHANCE to hit that gunflame crit. And then be useless for the rest of the fight.

If you see an enemy Warrior running this build in spvp, shake his hand and thank him, because he just gave your team a massive advantage.

I hope you realize that this entire thread is a massive whine about gimmick builds.
And people actually wonder why everyone derided the OP.

Devs don’t step foot in this subforum because they know some people would just angrily jump at them for the state the warrior is in at the moment. So I honestly don’t blame them for just ignoring this subforum until the next balance patch comes out.

If there were more people giving useful feedback and calmly explaining what they think is wrong with the profession, they would probably consider responding.
Unfortunately this subforum is instead full of threads about people complaining, crying and begging for buffs, making it a pretty undesirable place for devs.

There were no actual balance changes in this patch, only tooltip and visual fixes.

The balance patch will probably come shortly before proleague starts guys, no need to go in a panic (yet).

The fact that flame gun can do 20K crit damage would have nothing to do with my class and or stats. The most important thing would have been what flame gun build was being used. The image is cropped to not include the other player’s name. As I said I’m happy for Anet to look into this, because this looks broken to me. Why it is doing so much damage, I have no absolutely no idea, but maybe a warr who knows this build could tell you.

I’m sorry, but the fact that you did not reply to a single one of my questions makes me even more suspicious. There are tons of ways to easily fabricate a similar result outside of a normal pvp match – especially if you take into consideration things like might and vulnerability. And the fact that similar numbers are basically unheard of at the moment in normal pvp matches just makes it look like a fabricated result even more.

Hopefully I’m wrong and I’m sorry if that’s the case. I guess it will be up to Anet to check.
