A sensible question regarding QA and testing

in Living World

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

The thing is, no matter how much you test something things might (and will) slip through. You can never get a test environment to be 100% identical to a live environment, and thus you always risk running into issues not present on the test one, but on the live one.

Bugs we accept. They’re inevitable, and no reasonable person is going to get worked up over bugs. But the mess they just released? That’s beyond the pale. There’s a line between “bugs happen” and “we’re not doing a good enough job”. ArenaNet, with increasing frequency, is finding themselves on the wrong side of that line.

Why rush LS content in 2 weeks?

You are making a big mistake here.
You are assuming they only work on stuff for 2 weeks and then releases it.

That is not the case. They have closer to four months for each update (due to having multiple teams working at the same time on different releases).

It’s actually two months (four teams with two weeks per update). But you are making a big mistake here. You are assuming they have more than one QA team testing the updates as they’re rolled out. That’s a baseless assumption. You shouldn’t hang your argument on baseless assumptions.

Wow, talk about a thread filled with massive entitled whiners. You guys have no idea how hard it is to program a game, let alone an MMO.

I don’t know how things work in your country, but in mine we’re not required to be experts on a given subject before we’re allowed to voice our opinions on it. And you’re kitten ed right we’re entitled. We paid for this game. That entitles us, in every literal sense of the word, to criticize the game.

Yep. We’d also have missed an opportunity for the ardent fans to blame us for ArenaNet’s shortsightedness.

Nah. It’s not shortsightedness so much as it is not saying everything at all times forever. I mean, how dare they not tell people they had future plans for how to use those Blade Shards?

The fact I can mine them off my Clockwork Generator node in my home instance suggested to me there would be a use later. And, incidentally, there was no need for me to excessively hoard.

Eh, what can I say . . . by the by, could always turn those Bloodstone Dusts and Empyreal Fragments into their upgraded parts? Save some space, level your crafting it you’re 450+ . . .

Or junk it. I mean, not much use to that many stacks.

Unsurprisingly, you’re defending the indefensible.

When a game starts losing money, thats when they change. If the current system they have is getting them money, why would you change it. Think of it from their perspective; such a small amount of people actually come to forums itself.

You’re more likely to register on a forum to complain about a game than you are to register for leaving good feedback.

Good will with your customers? Even though good will doesn’t show up on an earnings report, it IS worth something. The ArenaNet who sold me this game was passionate about making a fun game. The ArenaNet selling a chance to get 1/10th of a weapon skin through their cash shop isn’t. When Guild Wars 3 is released, I’m certainly going to take that into consideration.

Ah, the age-old “if you’re critical of the game, then why are you still playing?” card. It sure didn’t take you long to play that gem, did it?

Makes sense right? If you hate the game so much, why play it?

Looks like whatever they’re doing is working!

As long as you continue to play, nothing is going to change. It’s when people start quitting, that’s when things change. See World of Warcraft.[/quote]

No, it doesn’t. It doesn’t because you’re projecting…you’re assuming criticism equates to hate. One can enjoy something without thinking it perfect. Ergo, one can offer criticism – point out flaws and shortcomings – in hopes that which they enjoy can be made better. The world isn’t required to vote “love it or hate it”, even if you do. There are a host of option that lie between the two extremes. Stop thinking so two-dimensionally.

Then why are you still here? If you keep complaining about how bad the content is distributed, with the game being free whats your purpose for complaining? They’re not going to change their 2 week release schedule. Unless the entire community decides to go back to 1 month living story schedules, which I doubt that will happen.

If you really want to change the game, then simply quit. They will then have numbers to go off of in meetings at work to really change how the games content is distributed. But if they are getting more and more players every month and a high concurrency rate, then why change?

Having content release every 2 weeks even with game breaking bugs are worth the experience due to the fact you fix them fairly quickly.

I disagree. I’d rather have highly polished content released less often than more buggy content released more often.

It’s impossible for any QA team to catch all bugs within a short time window.

Then perhaps the release schedule is too frantic? It saddens me that “when it’s ready” became “when it’s due”.

Every 2 weeks its always exciting to see what is new in Guild Wars 2, as opposed to other games where there is a public test realm and there’s nothing exciting at all because you know whats happening.

That’s your opinion, and you’re entitled to it. But there are those of us who disagree with your opinion. And we’re not wrong to do so.

I’ve spent over $1000 in gem purchases alone, so keep up the good work.

Does not affect me at all(maybe I should have mentioned that in my post) but I would imagine it affects Anet’s bottom line. If more players use this method I’m sure some adjustments will be made. If not, somewhere down the line it will affect me because Anet will make less money. That’s not something I want to happen.

Perhaps ArenaNet would sell more if they didn’t resort to shameful tactics for weapon skin scraps?

So yeah, this is not a complaint or anything but this community has reached a new low by making low level characters and speed running the first personal story to completion to get black lion keys. Delete character and rinse repeat.

Either these players are extremely bored or they are so poor that they can’t spend a few bucks to buy the gems from the cash shop.

You are aware that weapon skin tickets from Black Lion Chests are randomly awarded, right? You are aware that it costs significantly mroe than “a few bucks” to get these weapon skins, right? Evidently you aren’t. But you wouldn’t be the first person around here to say something foolish in a rush to chastise those with whom you disagree.

Please don’t delete them!

You can hold on to your extra blade shards, as the team will be adding something later which will allow you to convert the shards to something of value. Dev will be announcing more on that later. Thanks!

Seriously? How about an earlier notice than this?? Abotu an hour ago I cleaned out out 15 stacks of shards and about 10 of the belongings as I had finished my Dynamic Back piece, and now you say they are worth something? Can I open a ticket to have them restored?

You have no one but to blame but yourself for tossing a currency/item that is still used in the current LS.

The lengths to which some of you guys go to to defend Arenanet’s gaffs amazes me. Inventory space is a premium. That ArenaNet sells bank tabs and back slots for real money proves as much. If someone discards an item for which they have no use only to regret it two weeks later when another use is added that’s on the developers, not the players.

I think we’d just need to petition for NCsoft to give the devs a bit more breathing room. This 2-week schedule simply isn’t enough. And I can imagine that the dev teams involved in LS creation are worked to the bone.

Honestly, the tight schedule introduces unnecessary bugs, breeds complaints and the people trying to give us something exciting only get spite for their work, for the most part. While I’m also amazed by the amount of gamebreaking bugs, in most of the LS updates, I feel sorry for the people having to create this and then fix it, only to have people getting angry at them for the lack of polish, which I’m convinced isn’t their incompetence but a lack of time.

So please, make the biweekly schedule a monthly or bimonthly one, or a ‘when it’s done’. This rushed out chunks just don’t cut it in the long run.
And give the dev teams more breathing room.

That tight release schedule also keep players logging in every other week. I’m sure you’ve noticed that every Tuesday new items are added to the cash shop. That’s ultimately the purpose of the LS, to keep players logging in so they’ll purchase those new, temporarily-available items. And that means quality will always take a backseat to money where the LS is concerned.

I have to say that next to southsun, this is the absolutely worst update they have ever done.

At least at southsun, we got some nice backpiece for achievements (LS) and exotic loot + exotic trinket +20 slot bag for being there at the opening event.

Back in the days we were at least rewarded for being part of the bug fest…

That’s the wrong mindset for this thread. This thread is about content quality, not loot quality. Well implemented content with no rewards should be preferable to poorly implemented content with good rewards by everyone.

I have two things to say on this subject.

First, when you tell players you’re taking two weeks to ensure your finale is as polished as possible, then you release a finale as bugged and as big a mess as this, you just look bad. Shooting straight with your customers is almost always the best way to go. I don’t think any reasonable person would have begrudged you guys a thing if you’d simply said “we’ve been working hard, so we’re going to take a two week break around the holidays to rest and spend time with our families. We’ll be back to work after the new year.” But saying what you said, then releasing this mess? That’s just egg on your face.

Second, and more importantly, I think this finale illustrates what I and many others have been saying about the Living Story all along: two weeks simply isn’t enough time to ensure the quality of your release is where it should be. There’s not enough time to get the quality up to the level of the quality in the game at release, and there’s not enough time for the QA time to find and the developers to fix bugs. This release underscores exactly that. We’re three full days into content that will only be available for 14, and we’re still faced with serious bugs and design issues. You should be striving for better than this. You guys need to abandon “when it’s due” and go back to “when it’s ready”.

I like the Renown Heart NPCs as a way to highlight areas of interest while making the world feel alive. With Dynamic Events, there’s usually no “why” to them. And even if there is a “why”, we’re usually too busy tagging mobs to care. There’s no time to stop and smell the roses. I don’t get that same attachment to the world as I did talking to Edna.

I also feel that Renown Hearts are a good way to attract players to areas where interesting Dynamic Events run. Without something to keep players in an area, they’re just as likely to speed through between DEs as they are to catch them. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Dynamic Events too. But I do hope new zones include Renown Hearts NPCs (as well as the vistas, points of interest, etc.) in the same vein the original zones have.

I couldn’t possibly disagree more.

My character didn’t speak a single line during the LS (spoken or otherwise). My character didn’t make a single choice during the LS. My character stood by, silently, while OTHER characters made all the decisions and spoke all the dialogue. All I did was the grunt-work…the kind of contribution they could have got out of any number of nameless Lionguard. That’s what my character was during this entire LS…a nameless background character. There was no growth, there was no development, and there was little contribution of the heroic variety.

Just as the LS didn’t develop my character, it didn’t progress my character. I’m no stronger after completing the LS than I was before. I didn’t progress at all. I have the same skills, the same stats, I’m the same level, and I even have the same gear (minus some backpieces and the occasional helmet) I had before I began this quest.

The Living Story offered no character development (story) and no character progression (game). To argue otherwise is foolish. So given those two facts, I fail to see how anyone could argue the Living Story did anything to foster the RPG of this MMORPG.

PS – I could have also gone into the complete lack of new zones to explore, but that’s not necessarily required for the LS to enhance the RPG elements of this game. I hate that it didn’t add new zones, but I’ll save that bullet for another gunfight.

three much-needed cooking ingredients

in Crafting

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

With the inevitable cap raise, I can think of three ingredients that could provide a TON of dishes to get us from 400 to 500.

Honey
Harvested from trees the same way cinnamon and walnuts are, honey would allow us to make everything from glazed meat dishes to honey covered pastries.

Slabs of Pork
Dropped from boars, pinapals, simioths, etc, this would let us make pork dishes, sandwiches, and bacon-wrapped [insert just about anything here].

Fish & Shellfish
Ideally introduced via fishing, fish and shellfish would let use make all sorts of seafood dishes, and we could finally put all that seaweed to use and start making sushi.

Personally, I’d rather raise cooking from 400 to 500 making ham sandwiches, bacon-wrapped steak, honey glazed poultry dishes, steamed crab legs, tuna sushi rolls, and honey cakes than grinding out more Bloodstone Bricks and Dragonite Ore (or whatever the cooking equivalent is going to be).

Specific Game Mode
PVE

Proposal Overview
Restore Hunter’s Shot to what it was. In PvE, opening a fight with 10 stacks of Vulnerability allows some decent burst damage (when used with pets like Jaguars). In PvE, Stealth is useless on the longbow.

Goal of Proposal
I’m sure PvP and WvW rangers love the Stealth provided by Hunter’s Shot, but it’s nothing but a dead space on the weapon skill bar of a PvE Ranger. With a longbow, we’ve got long range, a pet, a knockback, and utility snares/roots to keep my enemies away. By changing Hunter’s Shot, you not only lowered my dps, you also gave me a skill that I have will never use in PvE.

Associated Risks
WvW and PvP Rangers would lose the Stealth, but as far as I know you guys still intend to add new skills to the game. Perhaps adding a Utility Skill that provides the Stealth would be the better way to handle it. They’d get their Stealth, and PvE players wouldn’t be saddled with a useless weapon skill.

I really don’t think they’re going to double up on any class themes. One divine magic user, one dark magic user, etc. is all you’re gong to get. This means there won’t be a heavy armor class that uses dark magic, elemental magic, or arcane magic. The only hope I think you guys have is a class using spirit magic (akin to the Ritualist).

But since the Living Story model has failed to deliver new skills*, new zones*, or new playable races – all of which are easier to implement than new classes – I wouldn’t worry about it.

People won’t care about this for a very simple reason: Its not enough quality of life. They want an expansion. New continents/multiple new permanent areas/new dungeons/new dungeon skins/new weapon skills/new utility skills/new elites/new weapon sets/new spvp modes AND maps/new WvW battleground maps (that actually affect server status, which edge of the mists, while a GREAT map, does not)

You seem to be using “quality of life” as a term referring to content. Quality of life usually refers to things like the LFG tool, the currency wallet, and other things that remove tedium from the game or otherwise make it easier to enjoy content.

An RPG is about personal choice, in this LS we had none, other than to participate or not. There were no dialogue choices with consequences or any roleplay choices at all. Our character doesn’t even talk with the other characters in the story (as in voiced dialogue). There is story but it is linear and occurs regardless of us as a player. That is by definition removing rpg from mmo, the only role we are playing in the living story is the mechanical role of our class build.

While I prefer RPGs that allow me some control over my character, I’m going to have to disagree with you on your opening statement. Choice isn’t a necessary element in RPGs (where video games are concerned). Some of my favorite RPGs have offer no choice at all (Final Fantasy IV, for example).

That said, the rest of the elements that go into an RPG (story, character development, character progression, exploration), FAR too many of those elements were painfully absent from the Living Story. None more so than my character’s voice. I don’t think my character said a single line, spoken or otherwise, during the entirety of the Living Story. I was basically relegated bystander. That, coupled with the lack of polish and lower standard of quality, makes me hope they abandon the Living Story model and never look back.

When I defeated Promathia, I got an incredible Rajas Ring. When I defeated Shiro, I got an Amulet of the Mists. When I defeated Scarlet…I got some greens, a yellow, and some Dragonite Ore? Yeah, there’s a mask skin, too. For this being the end of what’s supposed to be “an expansions’ worth of content”, the reward feels completely underwhelming. Rather than handing me a Black Lion Ticket, letting me choose one of those spiffy new weapon skins you just threw in an rng-box on your cash shop, you gave me the same loot I could have gathered on my own in 15 or so minutes of farming…and a rather bland mask skin.

But my thoughts on the reward you gave me isn’t why I’m making this post. It’s the reward you didn’t give me that has me making this thread. To make a Legendary weapon I have to commit to crafting, farming, exploration, PvE, WvW, Dungeons…I have to put forth effort into every aspect of the game except story (personal, living, or otherwise). You could have ended this Living Story with a token that could have been used to craft (or straight-up trade for) a precursor. Or you could have had a meta of metas (X LS meta achievements of Y gets a token). You could have finally tied your lore and your story to the Legendary-crafting process. But you didn’t. That, in my opinion, is a missed opportunity.

In theory, yes. In practice, not so much. This usually means those who want to but haven’t completed the event have trouble finding enough competent people to get things done.

For a game whose end-game is supposed to be all about collecting cosmetic items, I find it distasteful that most new cosmetic items are added to the cash shop. End-game is supposed to be about earning rewards, not plopping down a credit card.

Perhaps there’s nothing major to look forward to in 2014?

doubtful, there are the at least the so far elusive big projects referenced here:

from the long lost past of june 2013
http://www.guildwars2hub.com/features/interviews/colin-johanson-interview-looking-ahead

“we have some longer term projects some teams are working on the background, that we’re not going into detail about yet, we want people to know that new regions and dragons are all things we plan to do but its not something we’ll be releasing this year. "

and reiterated about here in the more recent january 2014:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-01-14-you-thought-that-was-it-for-guild-wars-2

“also as some of the really big projects we’re working on in the background come to fruition, we’re going to see a spike again in users.”

What makes you so sure that “big project” isn’t just the release of the game in China? What makes you think that “big project” isn’t just lip service given to keep players hanging around? What makes you so sure you put stock in what they say when they’ve already established a track record of saying one thing and doing another?

so what happens to PS when LA goes down?

This is one of the reasons I abhor the Living Story. The bi-monthly release schedule simply doesn’t leave enough time to ensure quality is up to par. The level of polish and attention to details for the Living Story hasn’t been anywhere near the bar set by the game at release.

The problem with events like these is they’re designed to keep the loot-locusts playing. Ergo, they give lucrative rewards. This leads to inflation, which hurts those who cannot play as much as the loot-locusts. And so gold sinks are added to the game in an effort to keep inflation in check. This, of course, is a double-edged sword. The gold sinks are designed to remove money from those who have it. This means those who don’t – those who don’t play as much as the loot-locusts – are again getting hurt. Those with limited play time get hurt coming and going.

soft wood plank recipe: this it?

Is the recipe for soft wood planks ever going to be reverted to three (currently four)? I’m not entirely sure why it should take 4 saplings to make 3 planks when everything else takes two or less. Compared to, say, iron ore – which comes in “rich” varieties and can be found places saplings cannot…in caves, underwater – it just seems a bit odd that the higher cost would remain now that we’ve got a proper sink with the addition of Ascended weapons.

Gw2 expansion

relax i am 100% confident we will get one

Aside from misguided optimism, what makes you so confident we’ll get an expansion when every signal we’ve been given indicates the exact opposite.

its barely been a year

It’s been a year and a half, actually. 18 months is as close to two years as it is one.

ad we already have rumors about the tengu

Rumors are rumors. There’s no more information today than existed when the game released a year and a half ago that indicates playable tengu (or any other race) will soon be playable.

In summation, anyone who thinks an expansion (or expansion-level content, like new races and new classes) is on the docket just isn’t paying attention. That, or they’re willfully and blissfully ignoring the track record.

$12.50 Charge for Convenience of Lions Arch

Person A
“I always took Highway X to get to work. Then one day the city decided to change Highway X to Tollway X. Now I have to pay for the same convenience I used to get for free. Sure, there are other alternative routes to get me to work, but these are far less convenient. I’m not happy with this change.”

Person B
“This isn’t a big deal because I don’t think it’s a big deal. It’s not like you have to take the highway to get to work. Besides, you should be happy to pay the tolls; that money goes to support your local government.”

You don’t, therefore no one should. That about right?

Fishing in guild wars 2

But… I don’t think fishing would really work, the primary point, I think, for fish and catchables to be introduced, would be as “Food” to “Heal” which this game doesn’t do.

Why would fish be used for food that heals? Why wouldn’t it be used to create food that works in the same manner as all the other food in this game?

For role playing it may seem cool but tbh all it adds is not enjoyment but work playing a video game.

Is fishing any more work than gathering ore or lumber from harvest nodes? Or salvaging leather and cloth from scraps? Or farming champions? Or crafting? Or doing the Personal Story? Or exploring Points of Interest and Vistas for map completion? Or leveling? Or Daily Achievements? What makes fishing work? Is it the fact that you don’t like it? Or was there an objective reason you don’t want fishing added to the game?

Wow, really?

Other cities were so much more convenient than LA for crafting/bank/BLT proximity. Last I checked those cities still exist. This is really a non-issue. The only thing missing right now is having crafting and the mystic toilet together in one spot. Big deal. There is literally no reason to buy the pass unless you absolutely want it, not to mention that passes drop all the time. Not to mention that all 5 of the other cities have everything LA had minus the mystic toilet, dungeon crafters.

And its war time. I kinda like the idea that we lose this one central hub for a while.

That’s mighty pompous of you to assume you get to decide for others what is and isn’t a big deal.

God i hope they delete this post… people are so lazy these days

OP if you want a quick and free mystic forge, go to WvW lol., its free and right next to WP…
you want craft/bank/TP, go to any major city lol. They got everything.

Some people just never want to learn and adapt….everyone wants everything for free and served to them on a silver platter… g

So your proposed solution is for him to go to WvW just to craft and use MF? I’m sure those stuck in queue who actually want to participate in WvW will thank you for such a “brilliant” idea.

Congrats for going against every single concept of loot in every MMO in history. You’re such a genius….

Working together with other players towards a common goal goes against every single concept of loot in every MMO in history? You might want to educate yourself before you post such nonsense.
