It’ll be ok as long as “any profession” does not mean “any build”.

They spread around a lot of utility with the recent balance changes. More professions will be able to fill more roles, which is a way to make the actual professions less important. As long as the required roles are fulfilled, specific class doesn’t matter.

It’s a good way to add flexibility to party compositions while (hopefully) still requiring some thought for playstyle choices, IMO.

I agree with spoj, the announcement today had nothing bad in it. It wasn’t as much detail as we’d like to see, and a lot of the promises they made have been made before, but what was there was promising.

After years of silence, they’ve confirmed that they know what they need to do. We now know that they want this content to actually be challenging, and they recognize that they need to produce it more often if this game is going to have a good reputation.

They know what they need to do. Now it’s a matter of seeing if they follow through. But the news today was as good as I could have expected…they’ve destroyed their credibility and our trust over the last few years so of course we’re skeptical of their claims, but at least it looks like we’re on the same page about what the ideal is.

Looks like they took a good direction with raids. I’m actually hyped for them.

- Sounds like they’re serious about making it challenge the combat system
- Reusing the Dynamic Event system means they’ll be able to maintain and build them more easily
- Specifically mentioned that new Raids will be coming in future LS releases

Sounds like they got the message we’ve been yelling since forever, lol. Hopefully there’ll be more dev posts, too.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/meet-the-daredevil-thiefs-elite-specialization/

If I get HoT and specialize my thief, I will refuse to refer to it as “daredevil”. It will be my “specialized thief” :P No idea where that name came from, seems incredibly out of place for the game’s setting. But anyway….

Cliffnotes:
- 150% endurance from the first minor trait? Yes, please! Especially since they nerfed Acrobatics…
- Staff: PBAoE damage (probably underwhelming?), weakness, blindness, evasion, cripple, interesting mobility options.
- Heal increases HP and endurance.
- Fist Flurry/Palm Strike: Single target DPS attack with delayed burst.
- Bandit’s Defense: Block utility with knockback on block.
- Impairing Daggers: Single target poison, slow, immobilize
- Elite: three part single target attack: daze -> knockdown -> finisher. Unless the damage is obscene, the finisher makes this look like it’d be only effective in PvP.
- Minor traits: 150% endurance | endurance on steal | heal on evade
- Adept traits: +dmg after evade | weakness on crit | Endurance on physical attacks, reduced cooldown on physical attacks
- Master traits: +endurance for using initiative with staff, +dmg when using staff without full endurance | Remove condi on evade | delayed burst on interrupt
- Grandmaster Traits: Select a dodge mechanic (below)
- New dodge mechanics sound situationally fun. Lotus for kiting, bounding for DPS, Unhindered for…PvP? Increased distance might be handy from time to time, but otherwise not worth much.

Overall, looks like the skills are a good fit for thief and there’s a lot of nice synergy with typical thief playstyle. I’m looking forward to hearing feedback after the next BWE.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried running, say, Arah with 3x ele + 2x thief to perma-chain deep freeze level 80 dungeon bosses?

Some bosses like Melandru can’t be deep frozen, balthazar can bug in terms of incoming cc, lupi can’t be, etc…

You would be sacrificing most of the dps of both thieves to constantly strip the defiance for 3-6 straight deep freezes(around 14secs of downtime after the first 3 for cds. You lose almost all of your might uptime unless you bring a lh ele with str runes on a lava font. No banners. And spreading out the freezes requires 2 lightning storms with some players using ahem viable but less than optimal rotations during capped vuln periods.

Chaining back to back freezes has been done at bjarl and the evolved husk in coe, probably a couple other bosses with high hp/mechanics that prevent max dmg situations.

Sure, it wouldn’t be optimal DPS for sure, but it might be funny. Especially if there’s some way to get Sigil of Paralyzation to proc through the icebow bundle for lupi….not sure if that’s doable.

What happens with cc’ing balth? I’ve not seen that before.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried running, say, Arah with 3x ele + 2x thief to perma-chain deep freeze level 80 dungeon bosses?

I’m not certain whether the timings/cooldowns would work out, but the three eles could alternate deep freeze and ice storm, and the thieves could take turns headshotting. It’d be interesting to see if that rotation would be maintainable to trivialize the higher level dungeons like the low level ones, and it’d need to be tested before breakerbar appears.

Have it reward us more (and less than it does now for super-speedy runs) for runs that take longer (with a timer that keeps progress of when we actually “do” stuff). Standardize all dungeons to have approximately the same reward / time, no matter how meta or un-meta the teams are.

Soo… people who put more effort into dungeons should get less reward for it?

People often say that taking longer to kill a boss makes the berseker player work harder, due to needing to manage the sometimes lenthgy active defenses cooldowns they have. Killing a boss fast removes this from the equation. Killing a boss not so fast, well, based on some arguments I have read on these forums, is “harder” for berserker players. I’ll find an example of someone saying this when I have more time, currently working

So yeah, based SOLELY on some of the stuff I have read on the forums posted by some top tier dungeon enthusiasts, he just may be on to something.

There’s a definite problem, but this is a terrible solution. It literally punishes people for learning to play well, and rewards people for playing poorly, or AFKing.

Do you really want every dungeon run to end with the party standing around, waiting for a timer to run out so that they can maximize their reward? Does that sound fun?

The problem is that it’s not only possible, but incredibly simple to shut down and blow up bosses before they can even attack once, particularly in low level dungeons. Fixing the mechanics that allow this is what’s needed, not penalizing players who are able to beat content quickly.

Hopefully the breakerbar will improve the situation on that front.

At least the wait is almost over and we’ll soon get some actual information about what this nebulous “challenging group content” will be this weekend.

Hope it lives up to the 9 months of waiting in the dark and will be satisfying after over 2 years of lackluster content releases.

Ugh. I hate speculating on this game’s future. There’s not been much reason to hope for anything good, so any speculation just turns negative quickly. I really hope they find a way turn that ship around with HoT…

I very much expect just a Lupi with a ton more health and attacks that can’t be reflected. Maybe mix in some of the Glint’s Lair type environmental mechanics.

I think any of the better players in this community should expect Engaging, not Challenging content

That’s a good point. The LS2 encounters were more engaging (albeit dumbed down to near faceroll difficulty). I’d be happy with engaging. I’d be happy with “new and not sucky”. I’d be thrilled with “new, not sucked, supported, and maintained.”

I’d put money on it being farm status within a week for the top tier dungeon guilds.

Yep.

Exclusive rewards are actually pretty bad, especially if you can’t sell them. My favourites are things like getting uber loot you can’t use.

I’m all for better rewards for harder content but exclusive? That needs some careful consideration. What happens when you get ALL the exclusive content from something? Do you stop doing that something and complain it’s worth your time to do that hard content because of exclusive loot you don’t need? No, I think that’s a bad route to take.

I agree. At least let me do something with rewards other than wear it. Salvage it, exchange it for tokens or a non-trivial amount of gold, something…Otherwise the new “AMAZING AWESOME REWARDS” will just be the next version of ascended ring drops. Yay, 5s. Woot?

It’s like those account bound exotics that drop in fractals for some moronic reason. At least they can be salvaged, but it just makes no sense.

I have a feeling Nike is going to be very disappointed with Saturday’s announcement. Do you think they’re really going to put content that requires BiS + coordination + team comp + DPS/sustain balance into GW2?

These are going to be the GW2 version of raids. Odds are it’ll be doable by any comp in exotics of any stat combo. At best, I expect an Arah-style instance with improved mechanics/AI, not something that will “force” players into certain playstyles/gear/coordinated parties. I just don’t see it happening in this “everyone’s a winner \o/ here have a shiney!!!!!” game :-/

And FWIW, I’d be fine with that. I personally never really wanted “hardcore” raids — just new generations of dungeons with ever-improving mechanics and AI. Nothing against them, and I’d be happy to see them added, but I’d really be happy with just “more dungeons”, lol.

I don’t know why I bother with these conversations. Nothing but children going on about how they purposely spite people who want to play differently than them. Why anet doesn’t ban these trolls is beyond me.

To be honest man. I’m super annoyed at what Zalavaaris.5329 say, but he’s kind of right. He completly lack respect for the group that specifically ask for meta, but one guy in soldier or cleric if he do his job decently, won’t affect much the dungeon. People that run meta don’t have that high dps anyway. In pugs they don’t run food, utility, they rarely have perma 25 of vulnerability, they leave the icebow on the ground, don’t deep freeze properly, have poor rotation, leave the warrior alone so one banner is left behind, etc. Just by all that, the dps of the group will vary more than one guy using soldier. So in the end people don’t notice.

If i’m in a guild group and one of use is in soldier, now that will show. Or if one guy is in soldier and the 4 other guys are bad or have bad build, then it will show. But for the vast majority, it won’t make a difference. That’s why I never bother with asking zerker or meta.

Again, that’s a complete lack of respect for other players on his part, but he’s right that he doesn’t make his group suffer. They just never notice it.

I run zerk with guild groups, I run soldier or valk in pugs to prove a point. A lot of times the groups will say hey good run, or good time and at the end of the run. Then I’ll say oh hey I’ve been in soldiers the entire time. You know how people usually react? Wow…. a necro in soldier gear doing that well? What ever we will invite you to future groups anyway. Know what I do then? Run zerker

Thanks for understanding my point

It’s still spiteful and trolling. Basic manners, dude…

Ice bow questions

1) Thieves have (had?) an Improvisation trait that gives them a damage boost with bundles. I never bother with it on my thief, but as far as I know that’s the only distinction between classes wrt ice bow dps. Love to hear more from the theorycrafters on this though.

2) As long as the ele doesn’t say not to touch it, it’s fair game in my book. I doubt anything will out-DPS IB 4 + 3, but I’m not certain.

3) If we’re lacking vuln, I try to pop 2 while I get in a good position for 4. After 4 is done, run/steal/shadowstep to the foe and pop 3 in melee range before dropping. It packs quite a punch. I wouldn’t camp, with rare exceptions like AC burrows.

Yep, people play for different reasons, and that’s fine.

Newer people tend to go for “anything goes” fun runs, older folks tend to go for fast, efficient runs.

Tryhards need to realize that there are people out there who just want to group up and run dungeons with the sole purpose of having fun, not caring about time or efficiency.

One the other hand, these new players need to realize that we’ve been playing the same content for three years. It was fun to “just run” dungeons at one point — but the novelty wore off at least two years ago. Now most just want to get through them, get the gold, and get out. There’s nothing interesting left at this point for a lot of players, which is why so many have left…

tl;dr Read LFG descriptions, find likeminded players, join a guild, be clear about how you want your runs, and just get along.

I would like to fully support dlonie (tbh since maha has disappeared I couldn’t find anyone I enjoyed so much to read each time) about how the dungeon community behaves sometimes.

Aww, thanks. I wasn’t sure if I’d end up getting flamed out of existence for my posts over the last few days, but it sounds like there are a lot of us who were sick of the treatment ‘outsiders’ would get here.

The rest of your post made some good points. It’s usually the same…maybe 10 (?) of us that actually ever post in here, and it’s pretty easy to feel like no one else is reading it. I’d like to see more lurkers start contributing to discussions, though it’s not always easy to jump into conversations here, especially if you don’t have a thick skin or follow the herd.

EU Player here and I’d understand said emoticon exactly as you would. But there’s one thing to keep in mind- it might be valid to say “we in the US”, but EU =/= EU. There are more or less big cultural differences between european countries, so I won’t claim to speak for every EU player. E. g. someone from portugal might interpret one of your sentences differently than someone from finland.

TBH, it’s not really fair for me to do the same about the US. Having lived in the rural south and the progressive northeast…let’s just say there are some very stark cultural differences between the two. I love New York

As we can see, some people just get annoyed or mad quite quickly. Is this something bad? Not necessary, it is in their personality. Add to this the fact that they are aware of this and apologizing and this is why I have faith in Us as a community.

And honestly, most of us have tolerated this sort of behavior for a long, long time. I don’t know if we’ll ever change it, though I’d love to see this subforum earn a friendly reputation. But I can’t completely blame the people who get hostile — most of us have been watching that stuff happen for years without stepping in and trying to bring any reason.

There are bingo threads, and then there are decent people trying to get answers or find help. I honestly don’t mind seeing bingo threads blow up — especially when the OPs initiate the hostility or are refusing to discuss things maturely. Gloves are off at that point!

But we do often to react to any non-meta post as a bingo thread, and that’s a piece of the problem that would be easy for us to fix. I have tried to step in and defend a poster when I see this happen, but a lot of times it just feels futile. The trick is to do it without trying to shame anyone who might have been lighting fuses, and just point out that an OP hadn’t really done anything wrong and might have just needed a bit of guidance. Otherwise it’s just throwing fuel on the fire (which I fully admit to doing at points in the healing guard thread… :P I’m not above anyone!).

scientifikittenerature.

Best kitten ever :P

During the course of change, I find a lot of topics have become quite disagreeable to me, but I’m not going miles to wage wars and fight for my own justice. However, if there are posts which respectfully deserve attention yet buried in tons of ill-willed, snarky, raging, trolling, passive-aggressive replies, I’ll come to their defense and empower them – for Lilith’s share, too.

Last but not least, I am far from a part of this dungeon and fractal community. I’m happy as an outlier, I speak for myself and for my casual friends who never ever post here and I wholeheartedly support people who come to learn.

I think just a handful of people doing this can help turn things around. It’s worth a shot, anyway. +1

Back in university, my prof would often include emoticons in his replies to my text/emails and sticky notes.

Similarly, I got in the habit of over-using smilies when I was an online tutor during undergrad. Having to constantly tell people over chat that they’re doing something wrong….one learns to do everything they can to soften the blow, else you end up wasting a lot of time waiting for them to fix up their pride and start paying attention again. Apparently I’d just be kittening people off by doing that if they were from elsewhere in the world, lol.

I live in Norway, and the fact that you experience emoticons in a complete other way does make sense to me. I’ve heard from several Americans living in Norway how unwelcoming and unsocial we can seem. Prime example is people sitting on the bus, people will go out of their way to not have to sit with a complete stranger and having to engage in a conversation.

I honestly think it might derive from the law of jante which is still situated in Norway after quite a long time.

The law of jante for those unaware.

Good stuff! This kind of information is always interesting. I’d not heard of the law of Jante before, and it sounds quite soul-crushing, tbh. The tone of the wikipedia article made it sound like most Norwegians dislike the concept, and it reminds me of some of the harsher socialist ideologies. I can see how that would tint a culture’s interpretations of social interactions compared to a more individualistic community.

As for sitting on the bus, I dislike social interactions with strangers in general, though there are people over here who feel the need to make small talk with everyone they meet. There’s a mix over here of outgoing people who want to talk to everyone, and the rest of us who wish they’d just leave us alone, heh.

I’m german, I’m not gonna claim generalizations about my people. What I will say is that we/I generally enjoy more direct and blunt forms of communication, and as such, to give my take on the topic we all keep talking about, an in my eyes (read this) passive aggressive sentence full with falsehood and ending in a wink might be considered a taunt.
I answered in bluntness, which may likely have been unappropriate, but that’s how we roll, you know.

Reminds me of a german chemist I knew. He told me a story about going through a checkout line at a store in the US and being a little freaked out by the cashier asking “How are you today?”. While we brush these off as meaningless small talk (we just say “fine” and that’s the end of it — you never actually give a real answer in these situations) he felt it was intrusive for a stranger to ask about something personal like that. Unexpected things happen when cultures collide

For the love of Melandru, I really need to stop with these walls of text >.<

It’s probably a cultural issue, I’m also used to winking implying sarcastic superiority. In general I despise the emoticons being used at all because they are extremely ambiguous to the situation.

Interesting. It means the exact opposite here, and in this case I (in the US) took it more as “what I just said could be taken harshly with the wrong tone, but I mean it kindly, friend.”

Mind if I ask where you’re at? I think you’re EU, are winks considered snarky to most of Europe? These sorts of differences fascinate me….and they’re really, really useful to understand!

Wow, dlonie, you are so brave! Hats off to you, but again please let the matter rest.

Well, I’m not trying to revive the old issue, I’m just getting tired of seeing the hostile gut-reaction towards non-meta players in this forum and wanted to say something about it (friendly wink :P). Since one of the points of this thread was about improving this community’s reputation, it seemed a good place to start the discussion.

I really think we should put down the torches a little bit and even if we are provoked, we should fully try at least, to ignore. Ignoring is the best weapon IMO.

Nicely put I’d add that a good way to defuse these sorts of situations (on the forums and in real life) is to stop when you feel offended, and look at what really happened and if the offense is justified. In this case, it seems some cultural differences played a role, along with a mob mentality about 3 posts being “too many”. But stepping back and re-evaluating things from a neutral standpoint to see the other side’s real message…well, there’s really not much to get offended by. As Jerus pointed out (correctly, from my interpretations of Skady’s comments), some of the things that were causing offense were intended as complements, but at that point, she’d already been cast as an attention-seeking baddy here to grief us. What I got out of those statements was “you’re an awesome player if you can trio FotM 50 in full zerk.”

Perhaps the problematic part is “attacking other people”

Lots of people don’t have a thick skin. They aren’t looking forward to “getting attacked”, no matter how justified it is. They won’t bother staying to defend themselves. They just leave and we are left with a small community which doesn’t get dungeon updates for 2 years.

Very, very true.

Maybe it’s person bias, but I’d love to see more discussion on helping new players and groups get into this content. “here is a way to make it easy” “here is a way that’s not optimal, but will make it possible to have a smooth consistent easy run”. Instead we berate that type of play.

I find it completely illogical when I see claims of taking offense to quotes of “it takes an elite group of Sesshi level players to run zerk more efficiently” in a negative way. That’s literally a compliment if you can run full zerk more efficiently. There’s no reason to combat such a statement, “well my group can do it” deserves nothing but a /bow in acknowledgement of your success as a player. There’s nothing negative there.

There’s a lot in your post that was worth pointing out, but I’ve really got nothing to add. Just wanted to give you some kudos Very well put, you wonderful drunk kitten. We need to run again sometime, if I ever log in xD

I can hang in a zerk group, I’ll see many (including members of this community) eat a death before I do.

…and thanks for not calling me out by name :P

I guess i’ll apologize if I’ve hurt anyone’s feelings in my (partially drunk) rant.
And I also want to apologize to Skady for possibly misinterpretating her good intentions and talking down on her for it

It takes a lot of balls to come out and say something like this. You’ve earned quite a bit of respect with that. Kudos.

Again getting a bit ranty (nothing special there! <3 whiskey!) but I don’t see why we rebel against such things. I understand a gut reaction of revulsion. We’ve been trained to have such reaction, we see “support build” and instantly think about those staff guardians running soldier. But this is actually an intelligent use of the full capacity we’re given. I think that’s something we should embrace as an option for those incapable of consistently running the optimal. That’s it in a nutshell. If you’re capable of running full zerk in comparable or faster times, that’s awesome, but I don’t see the point in bashing it. Maybe it’s just a misunderstanding but I really hope we can all use this as an example of how non meta has power but is just non optimal given that the skill factor isn’t considered.

Jerus Best Rants NA All Time Number 1 A-OK. I enjoyed that one

Anyway I’m a believer that it’s impossible to maintain mature discussion in any public forum. It’s inevitable for hive-minds to form and bury any form of real debate. This forum probably isn’t any better or worse than most other forums/sub-forums in regards to that; it’s just how things work.

Heh. Sad but true.

Ok, finished my tea, wall of text complete, now time for …. work. Sigh. kittening adulthood. I never asked for this. :P

bladex, maybe it’s a cultural issue then? When I’m from, a wink emoticon means “I’m joking, don’t take this too seriously” or, “I’m exaggerating here, but I hope you get my meaning.” I’ve not heard of winking implying sarcastic superiority, but I learn new things every day and cultural differences can be surprising!

Nike, might want to make a new thread or PM those numbers to her. Hard to argue with numbers, and I’m not sure she’d see it here (or bother coming back to this forum after losing 2 threads and dealing with a ton of hostility…). To answer your question — IIRC, she tried cele, didn’t personally like it over clerics, and stuck with what she was comfortable with.
