people still play dragonball “properly”?
the last time I went in it was practically AFK players / or teams taking it in turns to give wins…
I think a good boss fight should be about ~5 minutes, maybe 7.
10 is pushing it a bit.
15 ugh.
A good boss encounter is when a player doesn’t start thinking "WTF is up with the length of this boss? When is it going end?.. .. ughh were only at 50%?!! " when a player starts saying these things to him/herself – then there is definitely something truly wrong with the encounter.
For me personally, when I kept seeing the “0’s” and “Immunes” during damage, I was more conscious of the time it’s taking to down the boss, and when the boss was down… it was more a …“ughh finally” which is not a good sign.
15mins is an okay length provided the encounter mechanics are good, WoW’s raid boss fights are verging on this length but they were interesting and unique, though I think their structure in the fights is significantly better.
If the last boss in this fight had a more apparent “burn” phase before all these immune, damage reduction or condition spam things occur, it might have helped with that sense of “progression” in the fight, rather than the feeling of chipping away slowly at a brick wall – death by a 1000 cuts…. you know what I mean?.
Anyway, it’s obvious the senior developers are working on something else. Whether that is an expansion, some mind blowing (or not) new content, or a totally different game is anyone’s guess.
This team did the dungeon justice and it was probably their first big dungeon in GW2? if it is then they got it right first time, their fresh eyes on creating this content has definitely set the bar for their main dungeon team, which is a good thing.
I’d rather they set the bar with other types of content as we need that talent in the games other systems as opposed to slapping them back onto dungeons, that way they’d help develop a benchmark for their other teams to follow and to eventually surpass.
the whole game is a grind from start to end, it’s just cleverly hidden like the hearts- instead of seeing that arbitrary number for completion, they instead covered it with a progress bar.
it would be epic if you didn’t start the thread like you did! :S
I thought maybe the hologram would come to life, an anomaly happened in the system and suddenly was “aware” and we’d have to take it down at the final thing… ha!
but!! wouldn’t it be awesome if………..
I would like to see how it turned out though not entirely keen on how it now supports life, I just hope its not another forest, I would like a desert zone for just a change of pace.
Angry people stop playing gw2 because they think there is better things out there. Then they go out and experience some other mmo’s and find out how crap they are because they try to find something that is better than gw2. So eventually, everyone shamelessly walks right back to gw2 and anet gently embraces them again and forgives them for their sins and past treacheries
Other people stop playing because they got a bit burnt out and need a break.
I think it’s pretty harsh to call them angry, and your post sounds a bit biased/fanboyish.
I believe its more the game did not live up to their expectations set by the marketing and what they came to expect from playing other titles in this genre.
I don’t see the titles you’ve listed having the same success if I’m completely honest.
Matter of taste i guess – but the point is just that in 10 months GW2 had nearly 0 competitors, while something decent is coming up in next months, now.
You won’t play it? Prolly neither am i. But look at the big picture.
True it’ll be appealing to some players but I’m not convinced on their success, I see FFXIV realm reborn preforming better, even if their original was an absolute flop (and FYI I don’t see FFXIV being successful anyway given it’s history) but its all a matter of opinion.
GW2 has always had competition, may just not from “new sources”.
if anything will happen they’ll probably recycle it during a different story line, give it a different name and a different animation.
AA and Wildstar only cause they will be the next mmos on market with a decent chance to hold their ground.
I honestly don’t see either of those being able to claim a good share of the market, both of them don’t seem like their anything special, What made GW2 stand out is they marketed the product as something different, to change the genre / insert more propaganda here/ and that appealed to a lot of the audience, that with the art aesthetic made it real attractive and that allowed it to capture the audience, it was just the title wasn’t able to hold onto many of them.
I don’t see the titles you’ve listed having the same success if I’m completely honest.
In regards to that article, if it doesn’t list current active titles – such as Warcraft, Rift etc etc then how can one take it seriously? and the article list ends at 7… who does that? o.O
its also partly the lame culling system that’s to blame.
maybe a world population is high but you just can’t see all the characters.. makes you wonder just how old this technology is if it can’t handle something that is considered basic.
Rewrite their entire engine from scratch??? No like stated by someone else on this thread the Next Gen of consoles are using PC like Hardware so porting it would only require a few modifications to the engine like UI, Controller Support and handling the consoles OS that is it. I bet Anet could pull this off withought even making this game Consolized just by modifying the GW2 UI for the consoles seperately.
No they would definitely have to implement a new engine if they want to compete on the next gen console cycle, the current games engine doesn’t even support subdivided surfaces (if it is, it isn’t shown), the geometry is faceted which indicates that everything is pretty much has a low poly count, textures don’t trim off correctly, like from brickwork then a sudden sharp line to wooden planks – they have great texture painters for both the RGBA and displacement maps, foliage among other things are clearly on cards, sometimes you feel that the engine isn’t even fully optimised for the PC, they wouldn’t even be maximising the potential of the next gen consoles, plus all those fees that they would have to pay Microsoft and Sony for patches.
The game would not be profitable if released on the next gen consoles.
If they were released on the current cycle of consoles – then that’s a different story would probably agree with you on what you’ve said, but for next gen, definitely not.
Looking at the games systems I don’t think this title would survive on the console market, the environment there is alot harsher than the pc market both in the community and getting content out there, I last I heard microsoft charges a ridiculous amount for any content patches publishers apply and sony will prob have a similiar system, it is probably why Diablo 3 is a more or “closed” off to prevent the mass amount of patches that would be added.
It wouldn’t seem profitable and this game’s engine is far too old to be able to compete with modern game titles.
it’s still a gold sink at 50s a pop with RNG (we know how the devs love those 3 letters!) , at 20% chance to win..
they probably just rebranded the Dragon Coffer to the Rich Dragon Coffer to get us suckers to go for it…. it worked… again top notch marketing… lol
with the rich coffer marketing, I would have thought the RNG would have cool downed a bit.. clearly I wasn’t thinking right and against my better judgement I went for it.. totally regret it, totally a scam.
75 rich coffers and no ticket.
edit: added the rich in there.

Only way I’ll “Raid” in GW2 is if it’s FoW/UW/DoA. And no gear prereqs to do it. Make it like it was in GW and have it unlocked per server thru HoH.
I’d rather they just bring back the HoH, man that was some awesome fun back in the day! crushing those pesky IWAY teams…
I don’t think its cause they left, I think its cause they wanted to try something different and didn’t have to deal with the constant balancing all the time, it probably felt exhausting for them maybe and wanted to break away, I would have liked a little of that to remain though.
What I miss the most from GW1 and ever since they removed it was the Hall of Heroes, it was an awesome pvp experience!
Edit:
Oh and an “international district” I want to play with my US buddies
Playing 1 day a week for 10 hours and playing 5 days a week for 2 hours should yield the same reward.
No, it shouldn’t. And it doesn’t in any MMO I know of.
Yes, it should, and it does in most good games. If other mmos don’t do it it just means that they’re also wrong.
I agree with this to an extent, WoW / Blizzard did it right an example is with the LFR vs Scheduled raids, though gear progression is different in terms of stat amount, players can progress once a week casually or hardcore it through the week and be rewarded with similar items.
I’m not comparing GW2 to WoW before you start to jump me, I’m just saying that there are systems there in other titles that are doing things successfully, and the devs here aren’t really at least to me aren’t looking at this stuff and saying, yeah this works, how can we reimagine this and make this work for us?
I do agree with the OP with all his points, this game is sending out mixed and confusing messages, I swear at one point I saw an ANET video saying they don’t want people grinding and how it wasn’t fun, reading blocks of quest text etc etc, it seems with every update they ignored this completely.
Who knows! At this rate we might start adding back the trinity system……..
Make up your minds on a direction and follow it through….!
I do agree, since ascended is the tier to aim for, the game is punishing you if you wish to change builds, essentially having to downgrade back to exotics if you require a new stat distribution. Time gate progression is too harsh, the problem is not the time gated progression (even if its a bit OTT), it’s the needlessly over complication of stats and combos which makes purchases and changes too expensive both in currency and in time.
Virtual high five to the artist (If it wasn’t you Anthony) that reworked the animation, must have been under a bit of time pressure to get it out, looks much cooler than the classic harvesting animation.
Thanks.
It’s a great place for farming if you need those mats to upgrade ascended items, other than that I agree, some of it is fun though, I do like the final boss in this place with the oil drop mechanic.
The community will praise just as hard as it will criticise as proven by some of the more recent releases, what you will always get is the pitchforks if the users feel the developers are trying to pull a fast one, the most recent is the unlimited use sickle.
yeah the sprinkle animation is late, it’s probably due to the timing change instigated by the switch to the correct sickle animation, one problem after another aye?
" It’s just a WoW re brand job "
Well; Don’t need read anything
Yep, I read up until that point too and stopped.
That point completely invalidates his entire thread if he really truly believes that.
$$$$ signs win over ethics, just ask those bankers!!
But I completely agree with the majority of replies in this thread, but what bothers me the most is that there isn’t an attempt to control this, and for the absolute youngest players, this is a dangerous thing as gambling on those boxes can easily become an addiction… and could potentially have an profound affect on their futures… but hey… as I said.. $$$ over Ethics!
There’s really no other good explanation for it.
$$ Profit Deal. $$
@ Niyo
If it’s a movie you want to see , I highly doubt you’ll be an hour late and if one were, one would wait for the next screening- why? so you don’t fall into that exact position you’re describing.
@Lordkrall.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t work, just blocks of text is an outdated delivery method, and is often nowadays used to support or expand the story rather than being the main course for it’s delivery, I’m saying that if a different method was used, prehaps voice driven or some alternative that is more “modern” it would be much more engaging for the players.
edit:
agreeing exactly with what catofnine said.
(edited by dronzer.8392)
people who truly wanted to follow the story could search it up. There are detailed accounts of what happens in the Lost Shore online.
Thats where the problem lies, the story elements is not entirely nor completely obvious, in RPG games the story is usually the driving factor for new content and that delivery of that is quite important, it should always be absolutely clear, which for alot of people it isn’t.
No one should have to search online or read up on the internet to understand, the game should be able to give you clear view of what is going on, that’s like going to a movie and not really understanding anything that is going on, then someone tells you to follow it up on the internet..
Were a different audience than we were in the past and for alot, reading blocks of text is something is acceptable in the past but in modern gaming this is becoming far less common practice and players now a days tend to skip or skim past it, yes you can say lay blame on the user for not reading the content and to a degree that is correct but it also partly to also look at the developers and ask, why aren’t they embracing more modern techniques such as voice driven acting or cut scenes to drive story content?
I created a topic during F&F to discuss the merits/flaws of ending primarily solo content with a 5 man dungeon. It turned out to be a pretty contentious topic.
Whether this new ending structure to Southsun was a response to that or planned all along I think it is a great format.
Single player instance that tops off the story for those who cannot fathom entering a 5 man dungeon and an explorable mode on the side for those who do. Thats perfect imo.
Thanks Anet. Jus’ throwin’ it out there that I love that direction!
well I disagree, I play this MMO to do these things in groups, not solo my way through all the content.
I like to be social. I do not like this direction at all. I don’t want all dungeons from now on to be solo dungeons.
Eh? The point was this content caters to both needs – group and solo.
if they don’t have the resources to do it right, they should just stick to one path and make that the best they can, it does kinda feel like part of their “living story” series was done with a much smaller crew and prehaps they were spreading themselves out too much for this release… though this is speculation so I could be wrong…
wait there was a story?! o.O
this whole series didn’t make any sense- suddenly you ended up on southsun and then you end up fighting canach and sub directior null… who I honestly have no idea who they are and their role in all of this.
nothing really felt engaging at all.
only strength I can credit is that their marketing is top notch though
There is a different between challenging and grinding… this game is much more of the latter, but we grind to make our characters feel powerful… a progression trait that is absent in this game.
Could you imagine if Blizzard dropped in a jump puzzle such as the Mad Kings Tower?
I agree, infact the whole idea of a jump puzzles in an mmorpg… and especially in the Guild Wars franchise, given how non existed in the first game is mind boggling, It’s like someone putting in jump puzzles in a Call of Duty game……..
Today is the new world order whereas people want it now. No effort, no wait.
Yep, gamings playerbase in this genre has evolved and it was I’d say influenced by Blizzard’s doing, though it seems ANET is not really taking the note of the successes of what has worked well and what hasn’t based on the experiences of other franchises, in some ways it feels like they’re living in the past as opposed to using that valuable information to forward plan their moves… examples such as the dungeon systems, the token systems… the upgrade systems.. even the crafting… if you’re a launch GW2 player and you sit down and really think about it, it is way more complex than it needed to be and should be simplified.
GW2 is still a good game. Not perfect. But don’t be ignorant and say there isn’t anything to do. There is plenty to do and some of it is difficult. Fractals was a good start and I’m sure it will be refined even though I dislike the agony design.
I think it’s average, it’s neither good nor bad… it needs more polishing…. much more.
@Himei
I think you’ve missed the point, were talking more about it’s behaviour, i doubt there would be much less fuss if it had sickle animation instead of mining animation.
I’m willing to wager that they are working as intended and if testing anything…..they are testing how far they can get with minimal investment. Yes I know, that’s very skeptical of me, but I have already been fooled once by them and I’ll try my best to not let that happen again.
Hopefully if enough players speak up they will change it, but I highly doubt they will by their own volition.
I kind agree with this – seeing what they can get away with, but as lordkrall said earlier It would very well be a mistake.
For 10 bucks…this is kitten poor. Please don’t buy gems to support this kind of behavior. Buying it will only ensure things like this (and probably worse) will happen again.
Lets wait until we get actual confirmation from ArenaNet that this is working as intended shall we?
They have after all always posted about new stuff added to the gem store before, but in this case they haven’t. So it is likely that it got added to the store earlier than intended, just like the Custom Arena-things a couple of months ago.Wouldn’t that imply basically zero testing?
Or someone uploaded the wrong file, or misunderstood something. That doesn’t necessarily mean zero testing. Stuff like this happens all the time.
The more people involved in the creation of something, the more room for crossed wires and miscommunication.
Doubtful, with the hierarchy they cannot be that careless and it doesn’t matter how many people are involved, there is always the lead artists that oversee this and they usually have to approve the work before it gets passed down the department, this is just a quick dirty fast money making thing.
Shame, the actual design of the skin though isn’t bad…
I think it’s more what players are use to, this genre has evolved so much and players today are far less forgiving as they were in the past, when the expectations of things common, like in this example an advance release on patch notes aren’t done in the same timely manner as one is come to expect from titles of similiar genres one tends to think why? and their answer was something like things can change until the last minute? that to me is just saying the content isn’t in a readily released state, it’s not really a good way to work in my opinion though.
They should finalise the release, send out the notes and spend the remaining time polishing.
Yeah the molten mining pick was beautiful in alot of ways, but this… it looks like they saw the success of it and thought… how can we gain the same amount of profit with minimal work? , careless things like this anet is like inviting the mobs with pitchforks to your house……
yeah the sickle is a bit disapointing, looks like they could have put a little more care into the product
If that particular gear is destroying diversity – then yes, that’s what I said. Except for the warrior part.
When there is an optimal gear setup there will be no diversity among people who know how to play and want to extract the maximum of their class’ potential. There will always be an optimal gear setup.
See where I’m going here? Your attempts to ‘diversify’ gear are futile.
.
I agree, diversification of gear works great in concept but not in practice – optimal gearing for content is always been the way forward and once a basis has been estabilished anything less is always considered futile.
the inspect feature should be implimented, its a staple of mmorpgs regardless of the game clasification/audience, it seems many of those staples aren’t present in GW2.
Inspection is actually used in the game today, though at higher level fractal PUGS, you’re always asked to link your AR gear to verify your qualification, seeing chat spammed with this is a pain and on some occassions i see some players kicked for the stats theyve chosen in the AR gear they’ve linked if they can’t adequately explained their reasons for those choices.
This will always be an inherent problem, and the more difficult- team based content that is added, the more apparent this type of thing becomes- mainly because players do not want to waste their time or carry others regardless of their reasons.
(edited by dronzer.8392)
Optimal gearing requires research, I would expect the majority of dungeon goers to have a somewhat viable spec with appropriate gearing, I’m talking dungeon explorable mode and fractals @ level 80, story progression doesn’t matter that much as you’re still learning the ropes.
With the most respect to the developers, imo dungeons are broken in this game, they’re a mess from the drops, progression to the token system if I’m honest and the only ones that comes to mind being very successful was the molten facility and super adventure box.
Your next gear path from exotics is ascended, yet in the dungeon it was created for, you can only obtain 3 types of items (one of them excessively grindy) out of the 6 available, having to do other things non related to that dungeon to even progress (guild missions and daily).
As someone said above, gw2lfg is the resource to use, you’ll prob be unlikely to be able to forge a dungeon group quicky by shouting in map chat unless its the most popular runs like CoF or Fractals 10,20 etc, even then gw2lfg is still a better option
I just hope the dungeon doesn’t take hours to complete, to me 30mins is a good number, less is more and quality over quantity.
They need to hide the achievements and make the old stories just that – stories. Making unobtainable things noticeable is a bad move for completionist.
One day, they’ll probably have some way to replay old stories, though open world changes will most likely be lost forever. At the current rate, they’ll be deleting an expansion’s worth of content every year, rather than giving new players that much more things to do.
I agree with you that the previous/ any unobtainable achievements need to be hidden as its very unclear at times what is still achievable and what is not.
Deleting previous content is probably a good way to keep the world clean and moving forward, there are numerous games out there on the market that had tons of expansion content that never gets visited, even by new players once newer content is out and just sits there wasting valuable server space, as time progresses players tend to take the fastest/simpliest route to get to the latest content and bypass all the previous “old” content, occassionally revisiting when time permits or there is nothing else to do but this affects a much small minority, where as the masses tend to stay with the latest and greatest.
As long as it doesn’t include another NEW currency!
they need to find a way to simplify the current system (an example is done well is that “other game’s” Justice for old content and Valor for new content).
Yeah I agree with you, the letter you recieve was helpful and it directed you to the outpost but sometimes it still feels very unclear on how to progress, where to go and what exactly to do, especially after you get the sample gun thingy…..
Guildies mostly pointed out the activities but in the end I waited for Dulfy to release a guide and I followed that, their stuff is always very clear and helps makes sense of whats going on.
I think what would have made it clear is a “scout” or something that you commonly see in the other zones once you reach the outpost that explains to you what exactly you can do and how exactly you can help as alot of people tend to skim through text dialogues.
this is a pretty broad haystack and will be near impossible for others to help you as it’ll just be guesses, the easiest way to find out is go to the map and hover over the zone name itself, it’ll show you the percentage of that zone with what has been and hasn’t been completed, this’ll help you narrow down your search.
at a guess though, 2 of them might be the guild puzzle waypoints.
aww man still down? I hope this gets sorted before the daily reset, im one event away from finishing….
haha mystic toilet!
they need to start reducing the variety rather than adding more or at least come up with a better way , theres too many variations and a vast majority aren’t even considered useful in a build, it adds confusion to already somewhat confusing and overcomplicated item & item upgrade system.
you as everyone else has said don’t even need to do this to get the achieve done.
and god forbid something difficult in a game miraculously showed up.
it’s more fustrating than difficult i’d say.
