GvG in PVE open world?

Seems paying gems for an ingame gamemode/feature is probably not gonna sit well for a lot of people.

Legitimate point of view.

However, precedent has already been set with sPvP.

Providing an idea that could potentially incent development (e.g. revenue) might garner consideration.

If not gems, then badges, gold, guild influence… pick one.

Gemstore purchase of a GvG instance with a GvG-oriented map would add revenue to ANet and not negatively impact the rest of the open world for PvE players.

Tournament: Anyone else burned out?

Or go beta test another game. Works for me and a couple of guildmates.

I’ll add: read a good book in there as well.

Agree that it’s a matter of personal preference and finding balance. as it is with everything in life.

Having said that, and not feeling personally burnt out, still feel that the tournament is a couple of weeks too long. Am looking forward to regular WvW without all the hype.

Season feels too long. Agree with those wishing to not see one again.

I’m wondering if ANet has numbers on how many people have been in WvW this week. We’ve already seen 2 threads out here with early congratulations for winners.

I’m betting there will be a continuation of some sort of on-going tournaments. It’s a gap-filler in content that draws PvE players in. And it provides incentive for transfers. ANet might be able to make more money from WvW transfers by having shorter matches more often.

Hopefully Season 3 will be much shorter.

-Wondering how this will all play out in the end

Who the heck are you calling “oldsters” at 50?

AARP cards have been going in the trash can for the last 7 years when they show up at my house.

-Not interested in legendary walker or ascended dentures.

Ascended dentures on autoattack. Sounds like a balancing problem that would bite ANet on the butt.

Dentures of the Ancient God:

250 Vicious Fangs
250 Ancient Wood Planks
50 Globs of Ectoplasm
250 Piles of Crystalline Dust

And after every 1000 aa’s, you need to polish them with another 25 piles of crystalline dust.

ROFL! You had to add the ancient wood planks….

not to say I’m old but I remember key punch operators working endlessly to build files for the 1401 or the later 360, if that don’t date me. I remember playing chess via modem on what was to become known as “the internet” back in 1975. Pong was the first video game I played and I won’t even venture to guess how many different games I have played or at least sampled since then, I stumbled upon Guild Wars in February 2005, open beta and bought the Collector’s Edition after the experience … I crunch numbers, build and test everything … between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, I collectively have 95 characters, 65 on the former and 30 on the later, I know lore and weapons, stats and various builds as well as any of the youngsters, but I think the main reason I love Guild Wars 2 is the fluidity of the game as it grows with you, and the friendly community of players that you meet along the path.

Wow…now that takes me back. Reading this I recall in a college programming class having to punch cards to submit to the computer center…so they could run my program for me.

Punchcards and papertape. Honeywell, IBM 360, DEC-20, HP3000…. I remember programming in hexadecimal using punchcards. <shudder>

Oh, and those folks working in the computer center so you run your program.. yeah.. I remember doing that in my spare time while my first official job was porting the software for the university’s entire Business Office and Registration across 3 different mainframes…all requiring programming in 3 different languages…. because 2 departments couldn’t agree to share computer time. Politics haven’t changed much, lol.

I do not miss that.

And jia, I absolutely agree about the wonderful community here.

PS: just read my post. Now I feel “old” because that was totally a “back in my day uphills in snow both ways”…. so this is how it starts, huh?

@goldenwing – I was there when a group of players kited the entire party of 6 to the rally point by dragging mobs to the party and then pulling the mobs towards the rally point. It was amazing to watch the cooperation of the players. Most definitely more epic than the actual event.
Unfortunately it didn’t work in the end as the NPC ’s refused to acknowledge they had arrived and the 7th member was nowhere to be found(presumably it had fallen through the map at some point).

Glitched/bugged events make obtaining the traits that much more frustrating.
I tried to guest but ended up in the same instance multiple times.

/wave

My guildmate and I were the ones that suggested it.. as we stood there wanting to do something (felt like old times in DAoC with the glitch) and thought it might be worth a shot…

Everybody there was awesome and pitched in, just like you said. Love the cooperation that occurs from this community!

Thank you for jumping in and being part of that impromptu team. It would have fantastic if it had worked. just to reward everyone who tried.

Guess we need to wait for a reset (hope it’s not as long as waiting for next patch), or just get luckier landing in the right megaserver.

Good luck to you and I hope you get what you need.

Don’t know how to reply to individual posts (sry) but I can so relate to some of the issues here ie: jumping puzzles!! Yikes. I have a fear of heights anyway, real or virtual and some of them give me the heebie jeebies.

I absolutely empathize.

My original sig for this forum was: What does this game have against players with vertigo?

I’ve learned that repeated exposure (e.g. familiarity) to some of the jump puzzles negates the impact.

Also jumping into the water from one particularly high cliff in WvW (behind Garrison) has turned into one of my favorite pastimes because my character screams and waves her arms ALL the way down (particularly funny on an Asura). The humor overrides any impact.

New high places, and those that I have to tilt my camera up to see, still create an unpleasant reaction.

Hang in there! (hug)

Guildmate and I are 57. Been playing MMO’s for 15 years, I was playing FPS before then and both of us played PONG, Adventure back on an HP3000 Mainframe (I know, what’s that?), as well as D&D Pen and Paper after it hit its height, mid-70’s. Even did some graphical MUD development as a hobby in late 90’s, early 2000.

Been incredibly fortunate to play with my kids for over a decade or so and they have learned a lot through MMOs (marketing, economics, social issues around community, teamwork and reputation and they have developed leadership skills among others.)

Like many players I have run into over the years, some in their 60s, 70s and 80s, I hope to be able to spend time playing with my grandkids as well.

Humans learn through play.

So here’s to more fun!

Anyone done Balthazar lately? Been broken too long and a lot of folks are looking for obsidian shards. Tried to let all the NPCs for the pre die off (we kited mobs into them, which wasn’t always easy) because the game declared they needed to be rezzed when 6 out of 7 were standing there. (Convinced one of them has fallen through the map).

Not being able to actually guest elsewhere to run this for folks doesn’t make Megaserver anymore appealing.

We’ve had multiple discussions / suggestions out here for changing PPT, for adding points for defending and we’ve gotten no change and radio silence.

-Sorry, my frustration is showing. I agree there needs to be a change.

Pondering impractical 9-way server matchups (combo of 3 servers, 1 from each tier) against 2 other 3-way combos for a week, then rotate the temporary alliances for the next match up…. 3x the maps…..makes my head hurt.

I know a lot of us on Blackgate don’t like this weeks match up. Everyone on TS during reset was kinda feeling like a bully on DB and Mag. Could not give a idea on how to fix it, but I have to agree it seems really broken.

Agree. Some of us ended up leaving.

At this point, doesn’t seem there’s a reasonable way to climb out of this whole mess without a complete overhaul of the entire system and a reset/restart. Existing servers would need to be dissolved which will attrit a large number of customers.

The problem is the inherent bandwagon effect. It’s too easy to get to “winning” servers via transfer without having to start from scratch (unfortunately in this game, that’s a minor speedbump as well since leveling is so easy.) And yet transfers should have been the answer for the lower pop servers.

What we have right now is a half-baked system that punishes lower pop servers and continues to reward high pop (derp). That’s wrong and everybody knows it.

This isn’t team sports where the winning teams have last choice in draft rounds and the player roster has a cap.

I’d love to see the devs actually have a physical sit-down roundtable discussion with players from all tiers to brainstorm. Totally impractical. Not even getting feedback on suggestions posted on the forum.

Perhaps the answer is for ANet to pick a vision for what WvW ought to become (GvG, faction, some hybrid combination, throw out tournaments altogether) and deal with the attrition that results. Because the current status quo of limp along, throw a different kind of tournament structure at the players is doing more harm than good.

What is the Fascination with housing?

Ok first up..in GW2 it ain’t gonna happen..secondly..why should it???? Why should Devs spend their time creating stuff that hardly anyone will use or port too except a few Rp’ers. I just don’t understand..This ISN’’T the Sims…

Need more zones/classes/weapons/races before trivial fluff like housing.

I agree the game needs a lot more content.

The possibility for gem store sales for “unique and scarce” house items has a lot of potential revenue however. That would have to be a trade-off against investment in terms of development however. So in a game where “nothing is off the table”, who knows.

PS: and who knows, maybe a Scarlet-esque villain will come through destroying whole villages requiring more time, special-gem-store-only construction equipment…and er… bloodstone dust bricks…. to rebuild.

Guildmate of mine who has been heavily beta testing another game, managed to get the achieve in a couple of weekends.

Do the jump puzzles, and if you have laurels to spare, buy some WvW rank potions, those may help. There have been players who posted they were able to accomplish a lot in EotM.

I’ve heard that tickets for the skins will be available next season as well. Hopefully that is the case, it would make a lot of business sense to do so.

Posters will read into my post what they care to see, as they have in the past.

My concern for the state of WvW for all servers still stands, as have my previous posts analyzing the implementation of both WvW and tournament. Unfortunately many of those posts are long gone as threads are removed. I expect this thread will be as well.

Again, as far as the original post on this thread: it is up to ANet to set and enforce any rules they choose. Again, at the moment, the drama surrounding these threads reinforces ANet’s perception that tournament is working as intended and transfers will continue to be the main source of revenue from WvW. The implementation of transfers, Season 1 structure and Tournament are contributing, and have contributed to the current (broken) state of WvW. For all servers.

Which is the bigger picture focus here: longevity/impact on WvW.

I can’t speak to double standards, because other than things that have been said on this forum, I don’t know what’s gone down in the past.

I can’t speak to the character of servers, nor would I try, because I don’t view the WvW community that way.

Experience in multiple games being the low pop server, being the one that couldn’t win, being the one in the middle, hard fought wins, feeling dominated…. makes me too empathetic with the general player base.

And the mature understanding that the amount of enmity, rooted in whatever version of “truth” that’s out there, is real enough to be a cause of concern for ALL servers involved. I don’t know what the truth is, but 56, almost 57 years of living has taught me that generally nobody is totally innocent when it comes to disagreements in relationships.

My concern is with the players whose only “crime” is rolling on a server involved in 2 seasons worth of intense competition seemingly gone horribly awry. I mean that sincerely for all servers involved, in all leagues.

Nobody is winning here.

Active challenges in GW2 and in Wildstar

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Two very very different games for different audiences.

They seem to complement each other. I’ve been tooling around in the open beta (haven’t found this extra challenge yet btw) and I can see people who like GW2 would also get something out of the other. It going to be easy to switch between the two. I wonder if the publisher tried to arrange something like that.

When GW2 was in beta, the biggest response from most of the players of games like WoW and RIFT was that GW2 was a nice casual game, with no monthly subscription, which would give the hardcore raiders something to keep them busy while they waited out their raid timers.

Active challenges in GW2 and in Wildstar

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

Wildstar is designed to "coach"players through learning the combat and all of the game mechanics as they level. (Don’t forget, not everyone landing in Wildstar has played a game that has mobile combat). It is designed to ramp up and get harder the closer the player gets to endgame.

It starts out easy, and as players get past level 20, they sudden discover that they need to take a big step up to meet the game.

I am curious to see if the game actually will end up becoming more casual over a space of time, because at the moment, there exists a telling story about a beta tester saying the game was getting too hard to play and the producer responding with, “well then, don’t play”, indicating the developer would rather lose players than change the basic vision/character/structure/feel of the game. I admire that.

Now, to not upset Phadde and his original intent of the thread, I believe that ANet attempted to do something similar with Orr. The early zones in GW2 are easier, the mobs are spread out and it’s relatively easy to move around. Not the case in the original Orr zones.

At one point, 6 months or so after release, I remember threads complaining about the difficulty of Orr, and how players in GW2 had learned to modify their behavior in response to say the “gauntlet” on the way to Grenth…. just run. And how that behavior ended up becoming the norm when level 80’s wandered back down into the lower level zones and trailed mobs onto new players. Those zones ended up not getting a lot of traffic (for “endgame” zones) and eventually they were modified. And then new incentives were added to draw players back.

I agee with the posters who’ve said that it’s hard (if not impossible) to please all customers. WoW, given it’s size (both in terms of subscribers and the game world), tried to “be all things to all players” and managed somewhat successfully. They did reach a middle ground in WotLK, and many ex-players believe it was probably WoW’s peak. However, even that successful expansion failed by making heroic gear too easily available to everyone, cheapening it for those at the hard end of the challenging- content-spectrum, and creating boredom for those in the middle range.

RIFT also tried to please both ends of the spectrum and ended up attriting the customers in the middle who were neither into scheduled hardcore challenging content, nor those who were happier with a more casual approach. (Nothing wrong with either btw.) Finding that middle ground, providing enough content to keep everyone happy feels like an MMO’s developer’s holy grail.

GW2 does not seem to have the structure, from either a large world perspective, nor it’s basic gameplay foundation, nor frankly it’s business model, to be able to try and successfully support the wide diversity of playstyles demanded by today’s MMO players.

At the moment, GW2 feels somewhat fractured, with a little bit of everything it does somewhat well, instead of focusing on those things it can do exceptionally well and then sticking to them. That requires commitment and discipline. And a willingness to lose customers, in order to retain those that will be happiest.

I am willing to admit, that I might be one they just need to let go for the overall health of the game, even though personally, I am looking for more content from GW2.

At the moment, across multiple servers, there are innocent players (WvW and PvE) who are being affected by the choices being made by some to ‘take judgment on and condemn other servers’.

At least ANet has the authority to do so.

-Old DAoC player who stands firmly behind 2v1 being a legitimate situational tactic/strategy on the battlefield and equally believes that abusing that to trade wins violates its original intent from the game from which it was borrowed.

PS: If you’re going to accuse me of QQ’ing, please nail me for being upset that the reputation of the original RvR game (DAoC) is being cheapened by the poorly thought out implementation in this game.

Phadde:

I was taught over 40+ years ago to look at both sides when analyzing / comparing for both pro and con.

I’ve done that.

And I’ve included my customer experience. Something that ANet tends to ignore which is rather perplexing in a genre that is basically in the entertainment field.

ANet is very good at looking a technical details. Usually for their own internal purposes. Losing sight of their customers’ emotional reactions to their game and the changes they create does not make sense in a world where almost all of the decisions that the human race makes are in the end, emotional.

There are things that GW2 does exceptionally well. Lack of trinity, lack of gear-centric endgame, and the beautiful artwork.

There are things missing: explorable and replayable permanent additions of content.

And challenging PvE content.

And not limited to just those two.

You opened the thread up yourself making the comparison. If you wanted to only provide feedback to ANet (which most of us have been doing since before release on multiple forums), then it might have been wiser to have a generic discussion without inviting a comparison to a specific competing game.

Been in Wildstar beta for a while, have 2 deluxe copies pre-purchased. My guild has also bought copies and have been in beta as well.

We’ve exhausted content in GW2, I don’t know how long ago. We are PvX players (originally from DAoC), so at the moment the draw here is WvW. Unfortunately, other than Wexp (April 15th patch) and EotM (which most WvWer’s do not consider a real WvW map), have been the only updates in basically 2 years. We’ve done explorables ad nauseam with 4 of us. Ditto fractals. Have 2 characters in ascended, 2 more halfway outfitted in ascended, 26 level 80s in a minimum of exotic. And yes, done with personal stories through Zhaitan on several characters, although once through that was enough.

Having said all that, here’s is a snippet of a post I left on a thread out here regarding Wildstar, Housing and GW2:

Don’t like Wildstar’s graphics. Don’t like Wildstar’s overwhelming use of quests as rewards for quests. The combat is fantastic. The lack of weapon choice not so much. It’s like a hyped up world on super-sugared koolaid.

Love the humor.

The housing is just over the top… each character, not account mind you, each character can have their own house. Complete with bonus buffs.

I’m looking forward to playing Wildstar for PvE (in small doses) and staying with GW2 for WvW. If WvW goes downhill after Tournament…

….well, perhaps I’ll just need to permanently change worlds and invest in real estate. I hear Koolaid is an acquired taste. (shudder)

So there you have it.

I will play GW2 for WvW until it decays from lack of attention or ANet makes another ill-conceived ’intuitive" change to the system, leaving it worse off. OR until CU releases.

I will play Wildstar for the PvE challenge. And happily pay subscription for 2 accounts. It’s the business model I prefer.

I’d rather remain with GW2 for all of my play, but the game (which I do not consider an MMO), and the developer’s decisions / implementations over the last 2 years have clearly demonstrated I am not a customer they care to delight.

Someone literally making a death-threat online steps over the line of simple reporting to support/devs. This needs to be reported to the police as well.

While I am not a lawyer, I believe, if the person was really making a threat, it can be taken as a serious crime depending on the laws in the state that has jurisdiction.

Chapter VII. Crimes Against Public Peace and Welfare

I. BREACH OF THE PEACE AND RELATED OFFENSES

F. Criminal Threats.

Under [California Penal Code Section] 422(a), it is a crime to wilfully threaten to commit a crime that will result in death or great bodily injury to another person, with the specific intent that the statement is to be taken as a threat, even if the speaker does not intend to actually carry it out. The statement may be made verbally, in writing, or by means of an electronic communication device. (See infra, §25.) To be a violation of P.C. 422, the statement must be, “on its face and under the circumstances in which it is made, so unequivocal, unconditional, immediate, and specific as to convey to the person threatened a gravity of purpose and an immediate prospect of execution of the threat.” (See infra, §§26, 27.) The statement must cause the person “reasonably to be in sustained fear” for his or her own safety or that of his or her immediate family. (See infra, §28.) P.C.<<* p.651>> 422(b) and 422( c ) define “immediate family,” “electronic communication device,” and “electronic communication.”

Of course this would require a lawyer to actually look at the situation and make a call.

-Not trying to raise a ruckus, but these things need be taken seriously.

PS: Thank you Artanis, you and I share the same concern. (We posted at the same time.)

An End to the Queensdale Train

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

[…]

You also see players that are new and haven’t left Queensdale yet.

ANet should be able to see a few of those in their metrics.

And you don’t need a sempiternal train of player in ther doing the same things over and over to give help to new players. You could just have some sort of bounties and the Behemoth to keep players coming back to those areas.

And where’s the help in the other 4 starting areas? Because the train is only in 1, and there’s 5 races (as of now).

If there was a bounty system in place, in which you talk to a Scout, they give you some daily bounties with a weekly reward for doing them all, you do them then go to another area, these helping guys would be spread, helping more people.

Sounds like a great idea!

If ANet wants high level players spread throughout the lower zones, then they need to incent players to head there. When the daily requirement is in Shiverpeaks, you’ll find a lot of players in Wayfairer (Norn starting zone.) Ditto with Ascalonian in the areas around Black Citadel. Maguuma tends to get spread between the Sylvari and Asura starting areas. Kyrtan requirements seem to pop up in the daily more frequently, followed by Shiverpeaks.

I agree, you don’t need higher level players sitting in an eternal loop in order to provide help to new players; however the fact that it is an easily accomplished constant loop makes it easier in many ways to chat.

I agree, incenting the players into zones is the way to go. Right now, given the ease of QD (and other factors I have listed above), that zone is getting the most traffic, even in the face of repeated loot nerfs. The other factors obviously are equal to, or outweigh the specific loot rewards.

Would love to see new content added.

Reporting ppl who use hacks!

The only way to report hacks in PvP / WvW is via an email to support with supporting screenshots/video.

The report feature in-game does not support this kind of reporting.

This has been an on-going issue in WvW, with many requests to provide an easier way to report.

Good luck and thank you for reporting hacks; that helps all of us.

An End to the Queensdale Train

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I am openly against the train in Queensdale (QD). Not about trains in and of themselves, just the one currently in QD. I have admittedly started many disagreements in map chat about why the QD train is not healthy and have received nothing but ill thought out arguments that i wish to address here and hopefully raise awareness of the issue with Anet.

Firstly, my main argument for why the QD Train is a bad thing is because it is in a starting area. An area where players who are just starting out should be able to freely roam around and learn to play the game without a rampaging horde of higher level characters running around zerging everything in sight. Starter zones should be able to teach players how to control their character with their weapon abilities, utility skills and how to keep moving and dodging in order to survive.
Instead, what players get upon first arriving in QD is a massive blob of players who have grouped up for easy experience and non-challenging gameplay.

A majority of the arguments that i receive, is that i should not tell people how to play the game. This argument swings both ways as i have on numerous occasions when spawning the Champion Cave Troll by Vale WP and request assistance, that i should stop being a troll and wait for others in the train to come and kill it. This in itself is an example of people trying to tell me how to play the game which they seem very against when i say that the train should be stopped. A friend of mine once got so much offensive and unneeded harassment for killing a champion on the path of the QD train through Map chat and Whispers, that they did not log on for a few days. I can only imagine what this would be like to a player who logged on their first day and received this sort of abuse.

I’ve said this before and I’ll post it, I hope, one last time:

The QD champ train offers a great place for new players to get information, help, advice and even invites to guilds. I’ve seen this countless times.

In fact, I’ve seen that occur more often than I’ve seen abusive chat. That’s my experience. And I’m out there every single day, literally. Often on two accounts.

I’ve seen new players thankful that “veterans” were around to help them out.

Yes, there are folks out there in chat that don’t display mature behavior. You can find that in every zone in every game. Some of the worst I’ve heard was during LS events, particularly the marionette encounter.

If you want to solve the issue of higher level characters in a low level zone, then suggest a zone for those higher level players that:

1) provides a pleasant ambiance and is easy to navigate without creating lag

2) provides karma (yes, players are STILL farming karma)

3) provides a way to complete several daily / monthly achieves simultaneously

4) provides a relaxing, easily accomplished set of quick goals in a community-setting that’s full of camaraderie because the zone is pleasant, easy to navigate, and goals are easily accomplished. It allows players a chance to be social because of all of the above.

The WvW "community"

in WvW

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

And there are also posters on the forum, from all different servers, including “enemy” servers, who can and have posted in mature, sportsmanslike manner.

Those are the conversations worth reading on the forums.. an exchange of ideas, and real discussion.

As I’ve said before, part of what I enjoy about WvW is:

The joy of knowing, win or lose, the WvW community as a whole has the love of this style of play in common. And that without each other, especially “enemies”, we would have no enjoyment at all. It’s the foundation for a common ground of mutual respect.

The player base will always be a mixed bag of those with an experienced perspective, those passionately vocal about their loyalties, those that push the limits of extreme competition, and those that get swept up in the game, lose sight of the fact that a fellow player/human being is sitting on the other side of the computer screen.

Happens all to often in real life as well, as history and current news continually proves.

Unpleasant. Cringe-worthy sometimes. Part and parcel of life.

People defending beliefs and values with strong emotions and determination.

It’s a sign they care, no matter how (poorly/vehemently/excitedly/pick an adjective) expressed.

The developers should be aware of this. After all, they care passionately about their game as well, according to their statements.

The community versus developer communication is another topic that’s been addressed on another thread. My response is here:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Our-Community-1/page/2#post3935041

As far as other players and communication. If you have a balanced perception of the game and adhere to the value of respect / sportsmanship for fellow players, then continue to set an example and continue to post that way.

As for me, I will continue to be authentic and post with my server community in my sig, because that is where I play and that helps inform my perspective of the game. It does not totally define my perspective nor does it totally define me. I hope I am mature enough to objectively post with the understanding that all players out here have the love of WvW playstyle in common, and without each other, enemies et al, we would have no game to enjoy.

They could put temporary WvW objectives out in the open world, staging battles in different zones each month, for different rewards which disappear at the end of the month. Then after a year, we could all have an epic battle in Lion’s Arch, totally, utterly destroying every structure there permanently with siege!

if only there was a competing product that offered a similar, if not more advanced version of gw2 wvw….

the devs really need to wake up.

TESO is already out. One of the devs from DAoC (the original 3-way RvR concept that GW2 borrowed) was involved.

CU (Camelot Unchained) being developed by the other dev responsible for DAoC is due out in the 2015/early 2016 time frame. Complete with an ugraded version of DF (Darkness Falls dungeon which incorporates 3-way battle). There are lot of players waiting to see what that game will bring and if can recapture some of the original magic of RvR.

Not sure the former mentioned made a difference. Not sure the latter will either.

ANet will continue to (determinedly) go its own way.

This is not an endorsement of any of the above, including GW2.

Players bumping into each other [suggestion]

in WvW

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

Player collision would lend itself to some interesting tactics in a couple of keeps/towers where players could blockade. I believe this has been suggested before.

I agree, atm the server can barely handle the current combat.

Games with player collision often promote griefing, particularly in PvE situations and I can’t see ANet spending the time/money retooling to put this in.

…but.. but… glory is fleeting! Quick, CC it!

Let’s see, WvW and all it’s glory… /ponder…./ponder….. /sun sets…./sun rises…. /sun sets…. /still pondering…

Tournament has been a bit too long, it’s already cut into beta testing for another game multiple weekends, and open beta this week and now looks like it’s gonna run right up to headstart. ANet stacked the weeks! <innocent look>

Ok, seriously, I don’t want to feel pushed into another game because WvW has needed attention for a long time. August is rapidly approaching, and with it the 2-year anniversary of release. Not a lot of communication (I’m being generous), nor fixes/upgrades specific to WvW (other than EotM /Wexp) in that time frame. Captain Obvious says, “this is a recording”. :p

Concern about WvW’s future is probably something all of us can agree on.

Not much to say that hasn’t already been said before on theads long gone.

At the moment, based on the all the drama, and the constant server transfers, ANet could perceive this season is working as intended and that WvW is successful and therefore nothing needs to be done.

If they are considering changes, given their standard MO, they will continue to remain quiet while gathering/analyzing information. Then move slowly with implementation.

As soon as Anet announced a swiss format and 6 servers in a series of 6 server setups and that there would be individual rewards tied to server position it was obvious what the outcome would be. Some servers got an influx of transfers even somehow when they were full and we are where we are. Blame Anet for the shambles we are in.

As Shiren says, giving player rewards tied to server position was so flawed. All the fairweather and achievement hunters types just flocked to the obvious choices and numbers and coverage trumps all in wvw. Personally I could not give two hoots for a stupid skin if it means wvw is broken like this.

We were having some great T1 NA match ups leading up to season 2, some really close fights but its all gone pearshaped.

Kudos to BG though, I might not like your forum persona but I see plenty of your core out there fighting hard. /Salute

As far as I can see its just your “newer” recruits who seem to be creating these endless threads.

Back atcha. /salute

The combination of transfers, ANet’s implementation of a swiss style system, and rewards just fubar’d WvW altogether. I’m sure this was another attempt to get more players into WvW to boost revenue; it just continues an on-going pattern since release of not red team testing concepts, nor understanding how players will react that leads to what could have been avoidable problems.

Of course all the drama, the threads, the slinging back and forth will only encourage ANet to believe that the season is an exciting one.

The play is reward enough for those of us who truly love it.

The finishers are an extra goody, but not necessary, and the skins are just ugly and will probably be seen in abundance more within the PvE population than elsewhere.

ANet might have been better off financially putting them directly onto the gem store.

-As ever, looking down the road and concerned about WvW in the future

As far as I can tell, morale on BG is still ok.

If folks new to BG this particular season end up leaving after the season we will wish them good luck as they go on their way. Cough.

All those players already there that decide to stay, along with the rest of us “oldies” that have been around through slogs before, will continue to enjoy a tight-knit community.

Be part of the zerg or just die...

in WvW

Posted by: goldenwing.8473

goldenwing.8473

WvW isn’t just zerg or die. It’s a dance. Timing, judgment, awareness all play into that. And knowing when to move in, and when to move away. The map is your dance floor. Know it. Use it.

Small groups (4-5) can be very effective against 10-12 other players, with the right combo of builds, gear, skill and working together. Depends on the players you are up against. Our guild group (swat team, not havoc) has had skirmishes with 4 of us up against 15 and come out ok.

We’ve had skirmishes with a tight-knit havoc group that had 2 Mesmers, a Thief and Guardian and failed. Horribly. They were better dancers.

The four of us have gone up against a group of 20-25 in what felt like a marathon dance-off and held on just long enough for our zerg to sweep in as the last 2 of us were going down on a sliver.

That’s what makes WvW fun. The constant dancing.

We’ve been part of a 10-15 group multiple times, defending a keep against a zerg or two. A good commander who not only uses TS, but types in /s, players that pay attention, look and listen, using siege, engaging, falling back, re-engaging, and knowing when to do those, can defend against multiple zergs for hours, while getting in some good fights. It’s a fun dance.

All of it is a judgment in the moment, mostly based on pattern recognition and previous experience. Sometimes it goes horribly wrong. Then you need to add that fumble to your cumulative experience and hope the dance goes better next time.

Like dancing, if you want to get better, practice, practice, practice. Understand where you are on the dance floor, pick yourself up when you stumble or fall down, analyze, learn, correct, refine, and enjoy the music.

SpellOfIniquity and Phlogus left really good posts.

Hang in there, and good luck. Dying is part of WvW. It will happen. It’s what you do with it that matters.

Coverage is what makes a server win but that is not what makes a server good at wvw. Morale, voice chat, wvw guilds, and attitude toward militia. These are some of the key things that make a server good/enjoyable in wvw.

I find myself in total agreement with a fellow Elementalist, a fellow WvW player who happens to be on an “enemy” server.

I’d amend the “good at WvW” to be just “good” (e.g. community / teamwork).

I know there’s a lot of good servers out there.

Ninja Guilds- Who is the best?

Won’t claim to know any “bests” because “best” is fleeting.

However, that is the play my 4-man guild enjoys. Walking in and taking a keep (Bay/Hills/Gari) or a tower with just 4 of us and only secs left before the timer and zerg incoming.

Had some good times even today / tonight doing that.

The word we’ve always used through multiple games is “Swat-Team”, because we help where we can, whether that’s just a keep/tower ninja, or opening up walls/doors for the zerg,

Hope we never see the maps changed in a way that stops us from having our fun that way.
