*I am well aware that vegans cannot eat turkey, but sacrifices have to be made and turkeys are a loathesome animal feared and hated by all exept spawn of hell, and should not be out of bounds even for vegans. SOMEONE has to comprimise and it sure as hell ain’t gonna be BACONTUR.

I take down 1v1 with short bow without kiting, and quickly, just fine.

It come down to this. people who use PP haven’t spent enough time with Short Bow to know how to trait, slot and build for Short Bow. People who run Short Bow definitely don’t spend time with PP, traiting it etc.

I run BOTH. I also run D/P. And P/D. AND S/P. I practice with ALL of them, and I can say that from a purely damage outlook, PP is no better than SB 1v1. The rate at which I can spam my cluster bomb (note, I stand still leave my cursor right at their feet in melee and just slam 2,2 2,2 2,2 and it lands quick and crits a lot), regain initiative, heal and spam my cluster bomb allows me to 1v1 vets, skill challenges, and some bosses quickly, plus if I get too much heat I can bail easier.

Here’s the thing though, the difference is miniscule. P/P does just fine and has no splash damage allowing me to pull much cleaner, and focus on my bag of tricks more.

If there were a huge disparity on single target damage between the two, I could see slamming one or the other. There isn’t.

If you think their is, parse it and come back. To me, 6 seconds is 6 seconds. Pick one and enjoy it. No need to convert others. Both are equal.

Once you start doing it regularly you’ll have so much fun stealing you’ll look forward to it in every fight; you’ll alter your build around your steal, or vice versa; and you’ll wonder what you were doing before you discovered it.

The rest of your time, you’re an assassin.

In real life, stealing something every 45 seconds means you’re totally a thief! A compulsive thief! That’s a steal a minute. If I play for 4 hours, I could steal 180 things!!!! I’m the best thief in the world at even half that rate. Get right out of town.

And how many ‘thief’ classes in MMOs actually ‘steal’ stuff without killing stuff? Come on, admit you’re just a hater.

oh yeah, go tell this to a necro using his mechanic every 10 secs.
Or to a war, using his mechanic every 10 secs.
Or to a guardoam, having 3 abilities every 30-60-90 secs that awards passive bonuses if you don’t actively use them
Or to a ranger, having a permanent companion to manage, while having the chance to activate one of his abilities ( that are all on shorter CDs than steal)
or to an engeneer/ele, having a so difficult mechanic in swapping sets/attunement + 4 toolbelt skills.
Or to a mesmer, that, altough bugged and clunky , has 4 F skill + illusion summoning.

Yeah, stealing every 45 secs definitively makes you a thief.

in WoW, with my rogue, i could steal ( lol) every time i went in stealth. Surely more often than GW2 THIEF ( not rogue, THIEF).

Just say you have no clue about other classes.

He’s just mad because he’s dead wrong. If we could steal every 20 seconds, Thief would be way too over powered.

He’s trying to make the case that we should be able to steal at will because, hey, they said thief right? Right? Okay sure pal. He’s bad at playing the class and has to blame the special ability having a long cooldown… as if 45 seconds is like a 3 minute timer.

Honestly, I’m not sure what he wants. Maybe to go back to WoW? The character definitely feels like a thief to me. I don’t see his point.

Can we just say that with the range of available builds, utilities, tactics and playstyles, it’s kinda moot. Can you kill with it? Yes. Does it take a long time? No. Will it work in PvP with the right set up and tactics? Yes.

Done.

So, bottom line is…

Thief is totally viable in WvW, you don’t have to ‘only’ cluster bomb even in a siege, and we generally get to be the Pain in the Rear that the enemy hates because we’re hard to nail down.

And just to be fair, sure we’re limited in scope, aren’t melee, and can end up flatter than hammered kitten if we make even a small mistake. But that’s what walking the razor’s edge is about and that, for me, is what makes PvP fun.

Step 1: Target foe, hit F1
Step 2: Dodge backwards
Step 3: Examine shiny new toy
Step 4: Realize you’ve stolen an item that requires you to be in melee range
Step 5: Cry

If you can’t get back into close range you’re doing it wrong.

Sb + P/P thieves would have a word with you. Ah, and i would love to see you going into the zerg in WvWvW to use your class mechanic, because without any doubt “i’m doing it wrong”, since i don’t want to be in melee range.

How long does it take? I’m not suggesting STAY in there. What are you, nuts?

Against bosses, melee range for a sec means insta death.
In PvP, when i swap sets in order to support, melee range is the last thing i want to bump myself into.

I’m not saying it’s an unbearable issue, but it is an issue.

The worst thing about Steal is the CD , which makes it a forgettable skill, unless you’ve traited it heavily. In PvP it became good only after they made the items freaking OP.

Fact is that Steal is an horribly designed mechanic.

I just don’t agree with that at all.

First, in a boss fight I’m not alone. If I leave before the red circle gets activated I’m fine. Jump in, pop the effect from steal, and I’m out.

In PvP, who said anything about swapping sets? Pick a central target, bop in with steal, drop it and get out. I do it all the time.

Again, do I get nabbed from time to time? Yup. But if you ain’t dyin you ain’t tryin. And most times I’m the LAST person they’re looking at because I’m NOT THERE until I hit steal.

The mechanic is… Hit steal, go to target and get a prize. How is that broken? You mean you don’t LIKE the mechanic because it’s not what you want to do.

Short-bow is bad and it should feel bad. All short bow does is some aoe damage.

what are you talking about, Shortbow does more dmg then unload overall, on PP u just spam unload, with Shortbow its poison cloud from which all party benefit + cluster bomb detonates multiple times on same mob

I’m with you. I do way more damage with SB, and I am a fan of P/P, but only when I need single target damage at range.

I’m not saying that the Thief is “bad” at WvW. The class is great at lots of stuff. Unfortunately, it’s severely lacking when it comes to Keep attack/defense. All I find myself doing is spamming cluster shot because my basic attack can’t even reach the enemies down below (or up above). Every other class has a basic attack that reaches out to 1200. It’s frustrating and somewhat boring to be stuck using the same slow-moving skill over and over again.

The problem is that LoS still doesn’t really work as it should in this game. Ever shot a mob from 15 meters away and got the obstructed message when all there was between you and the mob was air? I have, and so have my guildies. And It’s a hair pulling situation. That same invisible pixel(or whatever it is) also blocks infiltrator’s arrow. I have noticed this happening more often in Orr than anywhere else(though iron marches and blazeridge steppes also have their frustrating spots).

However I do think that shadow step is fine as a straight line LoS teleport. Shouldn’t have up/down/over gaps functionality(and really neither should engineer or any other class, as it allows for cheesing of jumping puzzles/vistas and getting into areas much easier than you should by avoiding packs of mobs)

I think when the LoS issues get fixed, infiltrator’s arrow will as well.

I have yet to see this, but I’m sure I will sooner or later. I’ve heard people talk about it, but thought it was rare. Guess not.

I use PP occasionally. I guess the main problem is the only useful skill it has you can get many other ways and still keep AoE, Stealth and DPS. Unload doesn’t do much more than straight auto attack over the same amount of time with Short Bow.

Lowest damage, no utility, no AoE no shadow step, no stealth, one blind.

That’s why.

And trust me, I love the look so much I keep a pair in my backpack for easy stuff like underleveled areas, but it’s just not very flexible.

Not buying it. Not even once.

Never had a problem with it. Follow line of sight rules like table top games use. It’s not a teleport, people.

I wade into large groups via shadowstep/stealth, drop my cluster and poison, shadowstep/stealth out, drop smoke, roll roll steal step in, usestealskill shadowstep out smoke roll roll hide.

Causes chaos.

Yeah, I get bagged sometimes doing it, but the folks say watching it from above is hillarious because they scatter like ants, regroup and chase, then have to reaquire me all over again… like a flock of birds drifting back and forth.

But seriously, no one here gets help from their allies? Thief is 3x hella deadly when there’s others who know how to save your skin and hit the combos.

Steal gives me initiative plus a special. I use it whenever it’s up and the Big I runs low.

Plus, I need to display my name for certain screenshots. This has to be an oversight.

There will always be roles. Many classeses can fill different rolls in different ways.

That does NOT MEAN you don’t need a TANK. That just means your tank could be almost anybody with skill from almost any class.

Notice the group in the OP wasn’t waiting for a Guardian, but a TANK.

Now, ANet made a huge mistake in how they described what they created. It’s not the end of the Trinity, IT’S A CLASSLESS TRINITY.

Trying to portray it as “Any group can get together, all just DPS away and you’ll solve every dungeon with ease!” might have been going a bit too far. It’s more like, “If your group sits down and thinks about it, gears up, makes a plan, sticks with the plan and adapts to the situation, you might be able to do almost any dungeon without having to drag another character out.”

I could have sworn there was an option during Beta to show my own name plate. It may sound silly, but I like to see my own name above my character.

I know this has been asked before, but has anyone found a way to do this, or does ANet have any plans to make this possible?
