LS needs restructuring | Leave your ideas!

in Living World

Posted by: jweez.7214

jweez.7214

There are numerous problems with how the Living Story has been going. A lot of people feel like it moves to slow, it doesn’t address some of the already established lore we have, and is inconsistent from update to update.

I think we as a community need to accept that the ls IS how content will be rolled out. I know they said that a traditional boxed expansion isn’t off the table, but I am sure they are leaning towards the ls being the medium for xpacs.

So how do you guys think the living story should be structured to eliminate some of the problems with it? Below is..a perhaps half kitten …idea of how I would do it.

4 living story teams as we have right now but instead of each team working on one story line, each is working on its own.

So for example:

Team 1: Scarlet plot
Team 2: Isgaren and the Wizards Tower
Team 3: The Disappearance of the Human Gods
Team 4: Livia and the Scepter of Orr
*These are only examples !

Each team advance us little by little into each plot line maybe even creating plot lines that they can return to later. After they have had their finale update the will pick up a different piece of the lore and continue until that one had its finale. The finale doesn’t have to address all concerns of that “GW2 Mystery” it just has to solve the question that plot line wanted to address. For example Team 2 will maybe have a plot line about The wizard tower, and the current subject matter is “Who the hell is Isgaren and what is he really up to”. The teams don’t necessarily have to have their finale at the same time. Some plot lines will be shorter some could be longer.

I think this would help with a number of things.
1. Living story will “feel” like it is moving faster. (With some plot lines beginning some climaxing, and some still building in suspense it will be a very unpredictable tempo)
2. Provides more cohesion between gw2 and gw1
3. Diversity of plot line (You hate Scarlet? No worries in two weeks your favorite plot line “Wizards Tower” is coming up and your excited!)
4. Addresses attention span differences in the diverse audience.

There are some problems with this like:
1. Where do the dragons fit in?
2. How do we address cohesiveness from each plot line?
3. What about special holiday events?

So how do you think the living story should be addressed from a lore and story perspective? Got a good Idea drop it below! Please only constructive responses.

Zhaitan is alive

I think that they have pressure from the community at large to redo the fight. I also think they know that was cruddy end to the first chapter in gw2. We do know that they have said on record that if they go back to do a major revamp to a dungeon it will have to make sense to the story to go back.

So I offer that if you believe that arenanet will go back and redo the zhaitan fight because it is kittenty, then you should also believe he is alive because they will not revamp unless they can connect the changes to the story.

You will never be privy to the reasoning behind their decisions: anyone who does know is contractually obligated not to share that knowledge.

Thank you for your reply. Of course I know that no one can say with any certainty what the reason is for this except for those in the know. I just wanted to know if this COULD be a possibility or was their a fallacy in my thinking. For example, I came up with this theory and thought that maybe “Anet doesn’t actually see the profit, they just collect salary from NcSoft”. The whole point isn’t so much about what is actually going on but what the business model is and given that business model is my earlier theory an acceptable theory-and nothing more-to what is going on.

Expansion dodging

I was thinking earlier after watching WP’s latest video on if GW2 should do a typical expansion or release content that would usually be in an expansion in smaller frequent LS updates.

While thinking about this I started wondering why ArenaNet hasn’t pulled the trigger on either, and I started wondering what ArenaNet’s relationship/contract with NcSoft is like.

It seems that this could have alot to do with their decision. Maybe small frequent LS updates is ArenaNets strategy to keep Ncsoft at arms length or is financially in their best interest because of their contract with NcSoft.

I don’t know much about the gaming industry. Which is the reason I posted this. For those of you who do know about the studio publisher relationship-or better yet ArenaNet NcSoft relationship-what do you think? Is this a possible theory or does it not make sense given your insight into the situation.

Once again I am speculating with no real basis for this theory, and it may be a dumb theory but I was curious and thought I’d ask.

I have to admit I’m disappointed in you BG. You used TS to coordinate the teq fight. All the other servers are pugging it like how it was ment to be played. BG may have been the first to beat him, but having the coordination over TS is an unfair advantage over other servers who can’t get so many people in a voice chat. Beat the event with pugs like how all the other servers are playing it and how it was designed to be played and then I’d consider it the actual world first.

I will post this agian here this time sense people think they can go zerker and dps him to death

Armor sets That are needed Are:
PVT:POWER is probably the best for whatever teams are dpsing him directly. So, believe it or not, PVT is probably best for the zergs going in to fight him head on.

BERSERKER/VALK/ASSASSINS: If you’re defending the turrets I’d bring much more, assassins/valk/zerk. KILL ANY THING ATTACKING TURRET USERS as fast as possible considering how we can’t crit Tequatl fighting him head on in this is suicidal.

SHAMANS/GIVERS/SENTINELS: If you’re rezing or are on a turret helping the melee attacks and removing scale buffs. Givers helps boost the length of buffs and the tougness will make you more resistant to dps Vitality gear also give you some protection against condition draining your health.

This is the problem. He has good information with no real way to disseminate it or make sure people are being mindful of it. A few people will see it in the threads but there are still going to be a large amount of people the next time he does the event that have no clue.

I can walk into a group with full zerker have no idea what I am doing and die, and the group will still have to battle the cripple I put on them from the upscale.

Is Tequatl's defeat dependent on gear?

in Tequatl Rising

jweez.7214

I wouldn’t say gear so much. There just is not a good way to be tactical about the fight because of the nature of an open world event.

I see alot of good people giving others direction during and before the fight. But lets get serious half the people aren’t going to listen, a bunch will be lagging so hard that even if they wanted to listen they couldn’t, and the rest try their hardest but they just cant account for the amount of upscale that the people lagging and people who wont listen bring.

It is just an inherently flawed design. Sure you MIGHT get a server to finish it before the nerf bat smacks Tequatl. But that will be some strange combination of luck and serious coordination the likes that most servers just are not going to be able to arrange.

Furthermore, lets assume that anet doesn’t nerf it and it is possible as it is just super hard and requires a great deal of leadership. After a week or so no one will bother to try to put together 80 people to take down this boss. You said yourself anet that assembling 5+ people is just a headache.

My prediction is they will nerf Tequatl because of the design flaws I have mentioned earlier. Which at that point it will just be a zerg once again and gw2 would have made no progress.

It is sad because this could have been a really cool instanced encounter. It would have provided the necessary shield from lag, and the vehicle for serious team work and coordination i.e. the guild would have become a huge asset to a player and all you awesome selfless commanders trying to create organization out of chaos would have a way to do so that doesn’t give you a migraine and bad drinking problem.

I do not like these world bosses being anets “answer to the raid”. A raid in my humble opinion should be a large pre and post meditated, effort to take down content that is not beatable by the equivalent amount of players who have little to no information about the fight. To put it more simply your group has to be greater than the sum of your numbers.

With that said this is the direction anet has decided to go so my question is how do we accomplish this given the intrinsic flaws with how they choose to deliver their “answer”?

The problems that I see with this are the following.

Pre Meditation
A. The typical vehicle for content such as this are guilds. The typical guild isn’t large enough to complete this content. So how are we supposed to organize if at arrival we have no idea who we are working with?

Execution
The average player is going to lag throughout these things because they are so large. If you are assigned the task of putting down a shield before a big attack comes you are going to have some difficulty due to lag.

Post Meditation
C. It could be accomplished by failing, then learning and reorganize your efforts. But how when there it is likely the team composition will be entirely different by the time of the next encounter?

Now lets discuss. I want this to succeed in a big way and would like your opinions on how to organize in whatever depth you’d like.

please post you system specs if you’re having issues. I build my PC 4 yeasrs ago and other than upgrading the GPU 2 years ago and dropping in an SSD last year, I haven’t upgraded anything since Ibuilt it. I’m running great except the super zergs where I drop to about 25 fps on high settings. Once we figure out where your system is lacking you’ll know where to spend your money to get it running smoothly. If all else fails drop your graphcs settings for the zerg events and pop ’em back up after.

I would post my specs but this isn’t really supposed to be a “help me improve my performance post”. Sorry sometimes I do write unclear. I appreciate your willingness to help though! What I wanted this thread to be about was a discussion on the-what I believe to be-disconnect between what they are putting out as content (large zerg raids), and the performance of the average gw2 players pc. What are your thoughts? Do you think there is a disconnect? If so do you think it we should just come to expect that as mmorpg players? Do you think that most people can run these events even on low settings and get a decent experience? I want to know what you guys think.

1) They have done a lot to fix performance issues with changes on graphical effects and culling.

3) I get 16 fps standing alone in an empty field, on minimum graphics settings, and 3 fps in zerged events. I don’t complain. I still have fun. Try playing on my computer, then go back to yours and see that you are really making this more of an issue than it is. I’d love to have a minimum of 10-15 fps like you do. Quit complaining!

Lol, you obviously didn’t read all of my post because YOU are exactly who I am talking about. I stated that if my rig is a pretty good setup people who have lesser computers must be having a really hard time. This post isn’t about me. It is about the average gamer and how a focus on large zerg content will effect them.

There seems to be a serious disconnect between the content that Arenanet is releasing and the capabilities of the machines the average player is using to play GuildWars 2.

First of all, Gw2 is already a pretty demanding game. I have upgraded a few times and I still am only getting above average results while playing solo (35-60 fps). During large world events my computer sloooooows waaaaaay dooooown (10-15 fps). So if my computer is struggling I know this must be a pretty big problem for other people.

So this brings me to my big question…why on earth does anet keep releasing content that they know the average computer is going to struggle, sputter, and fumble through? So far there has been the zergs in the queens gauntlet, the zone raids of scarlett, and now the 80 man raid on Tequatl.

Is this supposed to be Anets answer to the raid? Because if it is I am rather uninterested. I may sound like a downer right now, but I am legitimately happy with them reworking this fight. But its not so much THIS fight that I have a problem with as much as the pattern as of late. It seems like Anet is making these zergy laggy world events the main bulk of content to experience and I am not that type of gamer. What do you guys think?

Endless treadmill of gear.

To add insult to injury, the next release on the release page appears to be super adventure box…

Actually this is great news. They should keep the box in, add to it slowly as it’s easy to develop new content for. They can use this time to refocus their efforts on the game they promised in the manifesto. I am by no means saying this should be the only content added, but from a living story standpoint they need more time to develop than what they are doing now.

Although I personally don’t like SAB I enjoy that the community pretty unanimously loves it and once again I respect it because it seems like thought and passion went into. I pretty much get along with most content even if it is not for me as long as it doesn’t seem like it was poorly put together.

Back when anet first announced their 2 week initiative a lot of people were angry saying that content was going to suffer and we were going to get fluff for story because of time constraints. I took to anets defense creating several topics outlining why I thought it was a marvelous idea and stating that Anet will not do anything that would allow the content to suffer. Well I was wrong…

I’ve tried to be patient with everything but this last patch quickly dissipated the faith I had in them to create a good story and move it along at a decent pace. Or even create a plot that was so lacking in creativity that a third grader could draw it up. I am sorry but who really didn’t see the queen getting kidnapped and the watchknights turning on us coming? The only thing that was interesting or even worth attention was when the asura tells you that Scarlet is something of a prodigy. Speaking of Scarlet….

I have never been so excited about a character during one patch then two weeks later completely loathe that same character. The whole “I want to watch the world burn” villain is one of my favorite archetypes, but seriously there has to be some depth to a character other than that. Lines like “Die. Die. Die. Die. Die.” and “They work for me because they want to live” seriously plays her out quickly and honestly makes her alot less menacing because you just grow to expect it from her everytime she speaks.

In closing I would like to say people can tell when something is slopped together and they can also tell when time and energy is put into something. For example, the steam creatures that she creates are by all measures fantastic. The sounds they make, their overall design, and their death animations are fantastic. Kudos. However, this story really just feels like your shooting from the hip.

I agree with you and more…

My dreams are far more detailed than most of the dialog in this game and I am sorry to say that I could write better stuff sitting around just joking and goofing with my husband.

There are two kinds of people in any creative endeavor that has to do with computers – story people and concept people – programmers aren’t writing the dialog and if they ARE, THAT is where your priorities are messed up beyond thought.

Writers who are creative and who can constantly pull “Tonight Show” quality monologues and dialog (Johnny Carson-quality) aren’t paid what some of these guys are.

So Washington-state-company-that-wants-more-of-our-money, how about either allowing your USERS, some of whom are AMAZING WRITERS, to do some dialog and reward them for it, or stop the dialog that repeats AD NAUSEUM and just stop pretending…

I don’t just grouse, I SUGGEST a fix for what is obviously a very important part of the game that isn’t being given the “attention” that it needs.

When are you going to start implementing GOOD ideas from GOOD players????

I hope that programmers aren’t writting the dialogue. And if they are that would explain alot. Your post makes me wonder about the structure of their living story department. Is their a writer on every Ls team? A group of writers that explains their vision for the story?

Elder Dragons do at least have emotions

So for the longest amount of time I’ve been under the impression the Elder Dragons didn’t have personality. I’ve heard several times that the Elder Dragons are like a force of nature with no real agenda other than to feed. As of recently I am feeling completely opposite about that because of this…

The dragon awoke in 1320 AE in Grothmar Wardowns within the Blood Legion Homelands, where it was once believed to be a mountain; then flew south over the charr territory of Ascalon, with the goal of hunting down its traitorous champion, Glint.

-gw2 wiki in reference to the awakening of Kralkatorrik

That proves it. Revenge is an advanced human like emotion there is no way around it. He actually awoke and went out of his way to settle a score with someone. In addition we know that this wasn’t something unexpected of him or just some coincidence. Glint was fearful that Kralkatorrik would come after her and hid because of it. That is emotion plain and simple. The missing factor in all of this is a detailed look at how the elder dragons view the races of Tyria.

I know most of you lore hounds have long ago pieced this together so if this is nothing new to you I apologize. But maybe it will help a few people from thinking for a whole year that the elder dragons are mindless like I did for a little less than a year.

You immediately see the problem with a statement like the one above in a game like gw2. It’s completely relative to myself and the audience. Depending on my level will determine how under or overwhelming that is.

So my suggestion is to add the option to display critical strikes as percentages of the mobs health as opposed to health points.

If I say I backstabbed for a 50% crit. You know immediately if that is good or not. Furthermore, when I am down leveled I can the numbers actually mean something no matter where I am in the world.

Not a big change or anything but it would be something I would enjoy. What do you guys think?

Ants….that’s how a dragon see’s us. No more no less. We are beneath them even using one brain sell on us….until we killed Zhaitan that is. Now who knows whats gonna happen!?

Wow, interesting. I hope they go with something like this.

The Elder Dragons are not mindless. While the races of Tyria perceive them to be like forces of nature, this is just because the races don’t know of the Elder Dragons’ true nature – they’re that mysterious, distant, and powerful. ArenaNet tends to explain them in that fashion as well because they want to emphasize this mysteriousness to the Elder Dragons so they explain them in the perspective of the races in most cases.

There is no waiting out the Elder Dragons – they rise, they devour until they can devour no more, and they go into hibernation. There are hints to show that they don’t naturally go into hibernation, but do so when they’re starved and weakened but not defeated (or are defeated but not killed). The only way to wait the Elder Dragons out would be to eliminate or contain all magic in the world and go into hiding so that they cannot be found – just like what the races did during the previous rise since they couldn’t defeat the Elder Dragons due to being solely reliant on magic.

I sure hope what you say about them not being mindless is true. With that whole “they are similar to a natural disaster” is like anet saying lets completely gut the personality of our main villains.

Highly doubt changing loot for champions is what they were talking about when they had something similar to raids in the works…

I hope not but I was just making sure. Thnx for the reply

Anet went on record and said that GW2 answer to the raid very well may be in the works. Are the recent changes to the drops on the champion mobs the answer to this? If anyone has any insight I would be so appreciative that I may come over and wash your car.

Impressed…not so much. Do I stop and gawk for a little bit yeah. And people dont have to be rich or have no life to have a legendary all it takes is a consistency, and good planning. Now when the game was 2 months old and people were running around with them thats a different story. But a years time is more than enough time to attain a legendary.

Don’t get me wrong. I am very excited about those changes. The only thing that takes steam off of that excitement was a complete neglect of their aforementioned “answer to the raid”. It was beyond disheartening to see that just washed aside when I am sure that many people were just as excited about it as I WAS. All in all, I love GW2. But it is EARLY in its life so devs are still trying to figure things out. What I relate it to is a scene in the Social Network where Zuckerburg’s CFO was trying to capitalize on the success of what was then referred to as “The Facebook”. Zuckerberg-at least in the movie-said “We don’t even know what it is yet. We don’t know what it is.” That is kind of where the devs are. They have this product in a fiercely competitive and dynamic market that has worked by some mixture of luck, talent, and timing. Right now they are searching for a unique identity and niche for it and they wish to ultimately discover how far they can take it. There is nothing wrong with that. And in that spirit of experimentation I would say Anet has done nothing wrong thus far (aside from the final Zhaitan fight that was just good awful, lol.)

So fanboys will say “if they have done nothing wrong then what’s the problem? Why are you making posts like this”? Well, as an invested fan of GW2 it is my responsibility to steer the devs in the right direction. Silent or overly empathetic mouths do NOTHING for the future of a game that has the potential to be remarkably great.

It doesn’t matter if its a “festival” or not, and it’s beside the point to even argue about semantics. That wasn’t the core issue the OP was having.

Yeah your right. What’s your opinion? Are you sick of the content Anet is releasing or are you happy with it?
