That’s why there are people who are still willing to play p2p ( sub fee ) games. I am one of them, as long as the sub fee is justifiable for the given game.
I agree with you. In a pay to play game where they are already receiving your money to support the continual updates that MMO are famous for then you shouldn’t be bothered with people trying to sell you stuff.
But to complain about people trying to sell you stuff in a buy to play model where the updates are contingent upon gem store purchases is just silly.
Yea it annoys me too that they try to make money from their game.
Sure why not just strip Anet of all their potential to earn money?
It’s a pretty fundamental philosophical/design difference.
WildStar has been envisioned from the beginning as being a game that was trying to feature the kind of difficulty that existed in MMOs (even the leveling game) prior to WoW’s expansions. The concept was to create a game that was, from the very beginning of it, tailored to meet the needs and desires of the most hardcore, high-skill-cap players in the MMO community — a group which often feels like its needs are overlooked in MMOs these days. So, WildStar from soup to nuts is catering to the most intense, hardcore, high skill gamer — that’s it’s own niche. I think it will be successful in that niche, but there are many other players who play MMOs these days who are moderately skilled at best and are not hardcore — they will be punished by WildStar’s design, and will not find it rewarding --> and, that’s okay because they are not WildStar’s target audience. The most hardcore, skill-cap oriented players are what they are going for.
And when they realize that this is the smallest and hardest to please niche in the MMO market, they’ll dumb down the content and make everything easier to attract the mainstream players, in much the same way that GW2 devs added ascended gear and fractal dungeons to appeal to the rush of hardcore gamers who complained that there was nothing to do when they hit the level cap after 10 days of play.
Yep.
snip…
Another thing that WS is getting right is PvP. They have MULTIPLE game modes, something that GW2 has been sorely lacking since launch. Additionally they don’t have the stupid hotjoin auto balancing or the constant 4v5 that happens here. Plus WS has GvG which was supposed to be guild wars namesake.Casuals will probably stay here, people looking for a challenge will probably migrate to WS.
They also have open world dueling and a sub fee, two reasons why I will remain playing GW2.
I don’t understand people’s qualms with open world dueling. Why does it bother you?
I like this topic alot! I hope the Moderators won’t delete it (They will).
Anyways I agree that there needs to be more hardcore content in the game. Furthermore, I think that it is coming slowly but surely.
A lot of the additions the devs have made have been to appease players who want more challenge. Fractals and MegaBosses are good examples. Though they didn’t quite hit the nail on the head they were certainly attempts at appealing to the hardcore market.
It isn’t so much that GW2 doesn’t care about challenging content. It is just that they refuse to abandon the more casual gamers. I agree with their design philosophy. Life SHOULD happen. It shouldn’t be a requirement that I live inside your game and if I don’t I am behind if I ever jump back in. At the same time if i put extra effort into the game I should be recognized.
WS will be a good game. Yet do consider that people are still in the euphoria period with it where they can’t see anything wrong with it. It’s like those first few months dating a new girl.
Also consider GW2 is an ambitious title. They are departing from many MMO safety nets (Trinity). It is likely easier to create hard content when you use the tried and tested cookie cutter for group composition.
Anyways those are my ramblings about this topic.

kitten we’re spoiled. Used to be MMOs would release maybe a months worth of content every four to six months and people would lap it up. Now people are so used to having new things to do every two weeks that withdrawal symptoms are setting in. Perspective people! Perspective!
Yep now we get content that can be completed in 5 hours every two weeks that is taken away if it is actually cool.
It’s never 5 hours only, at least for the majority of people. But for the “hardcore” players 5 hours every 2 weeks is still more than what you get from an expansion every 12 months. Those fast players finish expansions in less than 1 week (getting to max level, finishing the story etc)
I know. I am exaggerating to make the point of people like myself who think Ls updates are an inferior supplement to the traditional box xpac.

I agree they have added content but not really what a large percentage of players are looking for. I think that is apparent and proven true by how often threads like this pop up. I don’t know if those of us who want deeper content like new dungeons new weapons etc are just playing the wrong game or what.
And that’s not a threat to quit like a lot of people do. It’s just me staying that I no longer know what demographic gw2 is for.
I hate how they always make it seem like we are just children banging on the table for more food. “Be patient children”.
I started to doubt what was going on in gw2 over a year ago. And I keep telling myself to give them time…every…single…release.
Many of the problems we started with from day one are still in the game. In addition the game is stale and needs a real update.
Not to mention the most infuriating fact of it all is they haven’t even DECIDED how they will go about giving us the updates we actually want (box xpac or whatever the alternative will be called.)
But of course it’s us being impatient.
I think the current model can work but they just haven’t figured it out yet.
Also a lot of people who would support the game through gen store purchased won’t because they feel things are broken in the game. It’s hard for me to justify throwing money on X when I feel that the pve scene is in shambles and devs aren’t making the changes fast enough.
I know you asked for weapon ideas but If your looking for something to keep you busy ascended might be do just that. Maybe even by time you are done new legendaries will be available?
Ascended armor?
I posted this question in the mesmer forum also. Someone responded with a good answer and I wanted to post it here also.
It goes back to the original Guild Wars, and lore behind the Mesmer there. I’ll do my best to present what I remember/interpret from there.
In the original Prophecies campaign, the human gods were deeply tied to the profession’s. Lyssa is the twin Goddess of Beauty and Illusion, individually known as Lyss and Ilya. She is the patron Goddess of Mesmers and Assassins.
And it was, that a stranger came to the village of Wren seeking shelter and employment. Though young in years, her body was stooped and twisted, her flesh eaten by disease. “Ye have the mark of plague upon ye,” said the citizen named Gallrick. “Leave this place lest you sicken our people.”
“I’ve lost my family and my home,” cried the desperate woman. “Have you no heart?”
Yet each person, in turn, did look away.
Then from the crowd came a young woman, Sara. She looked upon the woman with pity. “If you need help,” said Sara, “I will give it.” And Sara did approach the gnarled, bent woman and did offer her a helping hand.
Then the sickened woman pulled from her body the robes of plague, revealing Herself to be the goddess Lyssa.
The people of Wren fell to their knees, begging Lyssa’s mercy. But lifting Sara gently, saith She, “True beauty is measured not by appearance but by actions and deeds. Many have eyes, but few have seen. Of all here, you saw the beauty behind the illusion. And you alone shall be blessed with My gifts.”
So Lyssa is twin gods, and as a follower of Lyssa, you would never know which twin would answer your prayers. So part of the reason a Mesmer wears a mask, is to keep the true identity of the Mesmer hidden, so that the enemy would never know what to expect.
Also, in the original, the Mesmer’s where presented as very “theatrical”. And in the theater, actor’s are constantly “wearing masks” to portray something other than themselves. Again, to keep the audience enthralled with the illusion/presentation, and not the actor’s real identity.
Thanks. That was really interesting!
The mask in gw2 is certainly a staple of the mesmer profession. I have been wondering what’s the deal with them lately. Are they supposed to represent something? Is there any lore attached to it? Did Mesmers wear masks in gw1? Why don’t any noteworthy mesmer npcs wear masks in the game?
I really like the concept and think its original but I keep getting the feeling that as like a lot of things in gw2 that it has no real meaning.
I think anet does a poor job of putting class lore into the game, hopefully I’m wrong and just have missed it and one of you bright souls can enlighten me.
Ps. I know there is a bit of lore about it at character creation but it only really states that Mesmers wear masks.

I hate it in pve. The lag sucks and it’s hard to get everyone on the same page. With that said anet has improved the fps and apparently it is possible to get everyone organized. I just don’t think they will ever be able to make the fps a non issue.
New weapons personally. I’d rather see a large uplift in number of weapon types for variety and that would likely be much easier to balance than adding skills for exisiting weapons. I can see that being a nightmare to track and abalnce (given the insane headache GW1 caused the dev team)
Yea the balancing would be an issue and probably a good reason they have it restricted.
Would you rather have new weapons or new skills for our current weapons. I ask because there always seems to be a skill or two that just isn’t useful on the weapon I am using.
The way new skills would work for our current weapons would be a click down with two or three choices to replace what you currently have.
Don’t you think that option kind of ruins alot of aspects of playing an mmorpg? Not trying to attack you I understand why your frustrated I just don’t know of a way to solve the problem without adverse effects other than heavy policing of it.
Wait I thought they has already introduced them?
But I don’t see the future as bright. I just see it as stagnant.
features that dont exists a year and half:
well i guess you two are blind to see the changes in these game from a year and a half.
All of the other changes tie to the game’s economy to reduce your income and to make the Gem Store more appealing.
I never understand why people get mad when a feature comes out to entice you to spend money…anet is a company and they don’t add features for kittens and giggles. They do it to drive revenue.
Humans in Tyria have grown in size since the stories of guild wars 1. So that can account for any discrepancies in scale.
Happy birthday. And I agree this is pretty awesome.
Mounts could potentially add a cosmetic reward beyond the scope of anything we have in game. There are no downsides to adding mount.
Correction. As stated the man power and dev time needed is a downside.
Congratulations, you stated something that has already been mentioned hundreds of times and contributed absolutely nothing.
So aggressive for no reason at all. This is a forum so I thought I’d add how I felt about it.
I love the idea of the soft trinity system. Note I said idea. If they ever figure it out it will be great.

This whole feature patch introduced more gold sinks and further increased the profitability of their Gem Store.
I’m sorry to say that you hit the nail on the head with your post.
Yea because companies do things for money.
No new skills, but at least we’re getting a trait overhaul in 2 weeks. Surely that counts, right?
Yeah that counts but I just hate the utility skills in this game. The lot of them are soooo situational. And that’s fine if they want us too to be swapping our skills out often but in that case they should make it friendlier to do so.
How much friendlier can you get than, “click the little triangle while out of combat”? Not like it’s hid in a deep menu or barred by an npc.
Yeah. I am just being lazy and picky about it. Thanks for the comment I’ve been getting more familiar with my utility skills so I can recognize what I need faster. I think me not being familiar with them and having to read each one when I try to switch stuff around led me to think it was more difficult than it is.

And no, they have never said that there will be no features until after a LS arc.
They have said that they will be seperated. Which basically means that week 2, 4, 6 might be LS and then week 8 Feature and 10 LS again.
That’s true.
The mega server post said that this will be the last feature of the April feature patch. The next two posts will likely talk about the implications of the megaserver. We also know that anet decided to not add any features until the end of Ls arches…so does that mean that since we didn’t get new skills- this time around we will be waiting another year for them?
If so that really sucks. I like the stuff in this round of features but I was really hoping to get new skills either slot skills or weapon skills.
While I liked this in wow I’d much rather see gw2 come out with their own distinct ideas when adding to their professions.
I hate playing thief. I think I just don’t get gw2 version of thief. Even though I hate playing them watching them is amazing easily most interesting class to watch in pvp spectator mode.
This is a cool topic though. I think I may bring it over to the Mesmer forums sometime.
I would rather them figure out this mess of a pve system they have got going. But I’m not opposed to them putting in more classes.
Anet will NEVER implement a hard trinity system. They have advertisements condemning it. The most we can hope for is to for them to salvage what is left of their system now.
Can they succeed in it?
At first I thought it was a sad theme but now that I’ve listen to it more it very nicely done the song with Scarlet talking is good the Female Vocal one is good but GW2 need more Vocal songs but Scarlet final boss theme is alright
Omg your comment just made it dawn on me why I never cared much for the music in gw2. I thought back and realized all my favorite songs from mmos had female vocals in it. This has been bothering me for awhile.
It really was done exceptionally. I don’t usually care much for the music but as soon as it turned on I immediately thought it was really good.
However with their confession that the LS was written in two days by two people locked in a room together I may just need to face the fact of the matter that yes indeed alot of what has happened wasn’t really planned. Just things they tacked on as they went.
Wait. Seriously? Do you have link to this confession?
Hi Arden the link to it is below and it begins at about 4:45
To be fair they may have meant they planned a general overview of each patch and not literally wrote the entirety of it. Nonetheless still seems rather short.

Yet throughout the living story anet didn’t tap into this facet of her character at all.
I honestly don’t even think this facet of her character even existed until the end.
I think the LW writing team had nothing for her personality. I mean, look at the short stories, then remember her words during Jubilee, Twilight Arbor, during Tower of Nightmares, and yes even the recordings in Origins of Madness/Edge of the Mists. Notice something?
In the short stories, she’s presented as this cold, calculating, evil genius that understands everything but doesn’t care about anything. In Jubilee and Twilight Assault, she’s a crazed “makes a joke and fun out of everything” and never messes up. In Tower of Nightmares, she’s presented as far more darker (via the hallucinations) and then back to her “makes a joke out of everything” attitude when we get to her. In Origins and Edge of the Mists – and yes, in Battle for Lion’s Arch too – she has suddenly become a tragic hero.
On top of this, in interviews a few things from the What Scarlet Saw short story got redacted, and it was the parts that was most hated by the playerbase (her going through all three colleges and her seeing Eternal Alchemy – got downgraded to going through special classes in all three colleges to show she can do full coursework but never doing said full coursework; and her going into a sensory deprivation tank and only thinking she saw the Eternal Alchemy). In Edge of the Mists, the latter got altered again.
Scarlet’s story really feels like it was hashed together. It feels as if the end product wasn’t even a glimmer in the writer’s mind when she was revealed. And even then, the earlier stuff feels like each writer had a different idea of what Scarlet was supposed to be – people bring up the possibility of schizophrenia between Ceara and Scarlet Briar, but I think this is just people trying to reason how messed up her character mentality is in the writing, that again it seems like the writers couldn’t decide which way to take Scarlet.
Scarlet in What Scarlet Saw? Completely different from Scarlet in Clockwork Chaos. Which is completely different from Scarlet in Tower of Nightmares, and in turn is completely different from Scarlet in the last four updates. The only consistency I see is between Clockwork Chaos and Twilight Assault – and the cinematic of Scarlet’s monologue during The Nightmare Incarnate which felt like an attempt to merge the Tower of Nightmares’ writing with the Twilight Assault writing – and in turn, an attempt to “fix” the players’ view on Scarlet.
And I would bet that if there wasn’t such negativity on Scarlet that she would have been kept around as long as possible.
Deep down I feel that yeah they were just winging it. At the same time I really just hope that isn’t the case.
However with their confession that the LS was written in two days by two people locked in a room together I may just need to face the fact of the matter that yes indeed alot of what has happened wasn’t really planned. Just things they tacked on as they went.
My Thoughts on Scarlet and the Living Story
in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath
Posted by: jweez.7214
Yep I agree. Especially the identity part.
Lol seems like most people are just kinda over the whole thing. I definitely can see why.
Scarlet’s story line actually has a beautiful poetic justice thing going on with it. Since her birth the only thing she really wanted was to discover the world on her own accord and be free of everyone’s plan for her. That is actually a very brave thing to do especially as a Sylvari. Yet in the end that desire left her completely willed by the motivations of another. Terribly tragic.
Yet throughout the living story anet didn’t tap into this facet of her character at all. All along it seemed as if she was just doing things randomly when she actually had a depth to her character that could have pulled people in. You could have left hints along the way that she was conflicted by her actions and/or unhappy about what she has become. Maybe even made her character model look more and more corrupted as the story goes along.
Now I am no writer but I have paid attention to this story line in depth and sense the story is written for me the player character, I thought that It would be good to at least offer anet the opportunity to see what I think could have made her a better villain.
What do you guys think? Do you think anet should have explored this part of who Scarlet is more?
I think ANet meant to explain Scarlet’s motivation through the cutscene after you killed her – specifically what lies at the end of it.
Still doesn’t explain a lot of things, such as:
- Why did seeing the eternal alchemy expose her to the dragon’s control?
- If dragons are connected to the Eternal Alchemy somehow, wouldn’t all of them had a chance to control her?
- So then, why this dragon? Why not one of the others? Or all of them?
- Why did she act like a mindless pawn in the last scene despite appearing completely independent and acting on her own volition up until now?
- Why was the dragon never mentioned or foreshadowed in “What Scarlet Saw”? Being “mind controlled” pretty much contradicts everything they established for her backstory.
- If dragons feed on magic, and the ley line was feeding this dragon a constant stream of magic, and Scarlet’s motivation was to disrupt the flow of magic feeding the dragon, wouldn’t that actually HARM the dragon instead of giving it what it wants? Why would the dragon manipulate her over a year-long period with the aim of interrupting its food source? Why would it want to harm itself?
MAKES. NO. SENSE.I could go on and on. I don’t care that there’s suddenly a dragon, it does nothing to redeem this storyline or make sense of Scarlet’s motives.
We don’t KNOW the answers to these questions but, the explanations that are floating about are.
1. We do not know if the eternal alchemy is what she saw. Only thing we know is she thought she saw it. What ever it it was she saw broke her mind and unleashed something that was already their but perhaps walled off.
2&3. It is strongly hinted at that Sylvari have some connection to the elder dragon Mordremoth. It is speculated that the Sylvari are not aware because of Ventari’s Tablet and/or the Pale Tree (likely deception on her behalf) has sealed that connection away from the Sylvari. When Scarlet entered the “Eternal Alchemy” it broke that seal and reconnected her to Mordremoth (only Mordremoth because they innately have a connection to them).
3. Not sure why. As of now I agree with your notion that that part makes no sense.
4. My personal speculation is she wasn’t being mind controlled anywhere in the written story. It was just a testament to who she was before Ceara became Scarlet. According to her journal that is in the game it took awhile before the dragon fully took over her mind as she fought it for awhile.
5. I have no clue.
(edited by jweez.7214)
They are a bit to soft for me. My friends are bad kitten like rytlock or caithe.
I think the “aren’t you curious why I did this line” was just a teaser. Anet knows how kittened people were that we didn’t know what scarlet was up to, and to have braham ruin it for us right when we get to know her endgame was probably put there to make players facepalm but get excited again when we find out moments later.
