I am thinking of getting into WVW. I played since launch and have spent maybe an hour doing WVW and that hour consisted of me running around and not knowing what was going on.

Anyway the last that I heard about WVW from a wp video is that it is broken. By broken he meant that close to no one was playing it.

So I wanna get into it but is this a good time to? Is the population up and are people competing in it?

I know that it seems I could just log in and find out but to me….WVW always seems empty. I think this is because I have no idea where to go. My point is that I think it would probably take me longer to find out on my own than it would to ask people who already know.

Maybe they are moving the raid portal out of VB so that people hanging out preparing for a raid don’t take up space in a map where players are trying to do events. I have seen several complaints since the raid was released about players waiting to raid taking up space in VB.

That’s what I was thinking, too.

That’s a good point but isn’t it kinda a bad idea to promote it on their Facebook if it’s just them moving the portal entrance?

Do you think Raids in GW2 were a bad idea?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: jweez.7214

jweez.7214

Wildstar have recently announced that they’re letting staff go and are canceling their plans to expand into the Chinese market citing Wildstar’s performance since launch.

This is interesting in relation to Guild Wars 2 because Wildstar was built around the concept of hardcore raiding as its endgame and has experienced nothing but problems because of it. Wildstar started out as a buy and sub game but quickly converted to a free to play model once its playerbase started to collapse. This is because while a vocal contingent of players insisted that hardcore raiding was the best thing ever and the game was designed around that, the reality is that not only was it not enough to carry the game, but the difficulty itself drove players away.

Considering that GW2 and Wildstar are both made by NCSoft subsidiaries it’s highly unlikely that Anet were unaware of what was happening with Wildstar but decided to not only push ahead with raids but coupled them directly into the core story arc so you either have to raid or miss out on core game story unless you really like watching Youtube videos of other people playing the game. The entire situation here just strikes me as curious.

Do you think that Anet made the right call here? Either in regards to the development of raids at all or by tying them in so closely to the core story arc? I’d like to hear your thoughts.

Making that comparison isn’t fair. Wildstar didn’t fail JUST because it had raids. it failed for an array of reasons.

1. Sub model which while was revoked but still killed off many of its original interest and later original players.
2. Bugged mid game. An unacceptable amount of mid level to max level quests were broken.
3. Complicated Grindy attunement process. Yes this has to do with raids but anet decided to not do attunement all together.
4. Run of the mill quest system.
5. Other game types were broken. pvp and such.

You are oversimplifying the situation to fit your narrative. Just because a game failed that focused on raiding doesn’t mean that raiding is now an unattractive game type in today’s gaming climate.

It’s really tiring to see so many people trying to kill off a game type that many people have been asking for since this games inception. Just because it isn’t your cup of tea doesn’t mean it isn’t worthwhile. Yes it’s true that a small proportion of players will do raids but it’s also true that anets raid team is small with 5-10 devs working on it (unless your calling anet liars which if that is the case I’m not sure how a discussion on this can be had).

There has been 3 years of what most people will call casual friendly features, game types, and content added to guild wars 2. Now that certain players get a small amount of attention certain players lose their sensibilities.

Finally, I would like to say that I am not a hardcore player before I get accused of being an elitist kitten . I’ve never been in a raid and I don’t plan to.

Class Lore?

For those of you new to MMORPGs in other games there would be lore about your classes. This would include things like class history, class related factions, notable people from history who are part of your class, a bit of information about the magic or skills of your class. Some games would have specific quests for you class also.

Also what’s up with us just becoming our elite specs? There’s no pageantry or flare to it at all. This lack of what I’m calling pageantry resonates throughout the world to systems such as legendary crafting, where I believe depth has been overly traded for convenience.

To me the lack of this type of thing makes for a shallow and unconvincing world. Which is a shame because the world is aesthetically beautiful. But because these types of things being missing the world seems soulless.

I know this probably sounds like I’m just complaining and yeah to an extent I am, but I really do want to know if It’s just me who misses this and I’m the odd man out or is this wanted by others.

Forced grouping and raid group experience

Oh wow. I hate all of you. I mean it. You are the exact same people that ruined World of Wacraft. You moaned, you cried and you demanded, DEMANDED, to see everything in the game without any real challenge behind it.

Why the hell does it matter that you paid the same amount of money for the expansion as hard core raider? The fact of the matter is that what you paid for the game is irrelevant when it comes to content. It is not gated, it is not forced. None is forcing you to do it. You want to do it, you are forcing yourself to do it. Stop shifting blame and assume some responsibility. Why should you, a casual gamer who doesn’t put as much effort as hard core raider, have the same game experience? Hard core games obviously puts a lot more effort into the game, he should have extra rewards for it. Do you seriously want to be rewarded for nothing? You paid money to experience some challenges, some difficulties and you don’t want that part, you only want rewards? Get over yourself. I’m not a hard core gamer anymore and I’m perfectly happy with not being able to see raiding in HoT. I don’t have time for it, I don’t find it interesting and I don’t want to be THAT committed to the game. I play, casually, and I like when I am challenged. Legendary will take me a long time to finish and I’m quite upset about it because I, as a casual, shouldn’t have access to it at all! Jesus, if you want to pay-to-win, go play something else and leave this game to people like me, that like challenges.

Im not sure what you are opposed to here. Would you be fine with two different modes if the reward disparity between two raid modes was very large?

Or under no circumstance would you be fine with two different modes for raids.

I’m just wondering. I have no skin in this fight because I don’t raid.

Welcome to PC gaming. You’ve made a solid decision as we are kewler and better looking than our console counter parts.

Any ways like many have said already it depends on the guild. I would like to add however it also depends on the content being offered. I understand you are new but to a lot of us we have been grinding more or less the same content for years. This translates into their being not as much urgency to acquire items. In addition the familiarity and difficulty of the content is also a likely contributor. Why go through the hassle of setting up schedules and teams for content that you will get through just fine with a group of strangers? With HOT and raids coming soon it may cause guilds to become more organized.

Stop complaining about issues that aren’t there.
Either deal with it, or move on with your life and find a game that does cater your needs.
After all, you aren’t forced to play this game.

People with an attitude like you shine a bad light on the LGBT community, or any “minority” for that sake.
Everything that isn’t exactly relative to your lifestyle is seen as discriminating and oppressive in your eyes, so you expect other people to go out of their own way, away from their own lifestyle, just so you don’t feel oppressed anymore.
If anyone is oppressing other people here, its you, and you make me feel not welcome in the “gw2 universe”

Bravo!

Levels of Villains
Ok here is my take on the Big Meanies

Bad guys come in many shapes and sizes, from the grandiose, to the lowly bully. All have their place in the story and all have differing levels of interaction. Problems start to arise when the Villains exposure moves outside their interaction level. In the samples below I will try to give some in popular fantasy culture examples.

Devine – This is the Godlike villain.
Interaction: This bad guy should never have direct interaction with the player.
Why: This villain is the personification of evil, meant to shape the overall evil and strife in the world. They are way too big for the characters to have direct contact. Since they can squash the entire world with a thought the only interaction should be through stories, rumors and evil underlings.
Examples: Morgoth/Meldor, Cthulhu,
Who: GW2 Dragons

Worldly – This is the Demi-god villain.
Interaction: At this level there should be very little, if any, interaction with the player
Why: Though they cannot just destroy the world on a whim, they can spread their evil worldwide with little effort. Interaction should only be through hushed whispers for fear of drawing any sort of attention.
Examples: Lucifer, Vecna
Who: Grenth, Dhuum,

Regional – This is a villain who spreads their evil across a worldly region or a large part of it, like Tyria, Elona or Cantha .
Interaction: This should generally be the highest level of Villain that most players should ever meet.
Why: They do not have godlike powers but any interaction with the player, group of players or army of players will most assuredly fail. This is an end of story Villain who the players will hopefully overcome in the end
Examples: Sauron, Lord Voldemort, Darth Vader, Kas the Bloody-Handed
Who: Scarlet, Palawa Joko, Shiro Tagachi

Area – This is a villain who spreads their evil across area or map section.
Interaction: Players should be fearful of interaction with these meanies. Solo interaction would normally be near instantly lethal. Group or even Zerg battles should have questionable success.
Why: They’re big, they’re bad, and you know it.
Examples: Smaug, Sith Lord
Who: Tequatl, Three Headed Wurm

Local – This is the elite villain.
Interaction: There should be fear of death for these encounters at the solo or group levels but they can be easily vanquished by large groups.
Why: These are your common big bads which players would normally encounter in standard game play.
Examples: Uruk-hai, Jabba the Hut
Who: Champions, World Bosses

Summary: So there are plenty of places to put Villains in the game. You just need to be careful how you implement and what kind of interaction you encourage. No matter how you slice it though if they don’t have a well written, believable back story the result will be… a Fail. Put your hand down Ceara

I enjoyed your post. It was really interesting though I am confused why you categorize the Elder Dragons as Devine instead of Worldly. The elder dragons do not have the power to destroy the world (or if they do possess the power they don’t possess the will to do so).

To me it seems they would fall under Worldly according to your hierarchy.

Last night I came to the realization that for the first time in my 10 years of playing MMOs. I am not excited about the potential story paths that an expansion has to offer. Upon further thinking I found out why I am uninterested; HOT (and gw2 as a whole) has IMO the worst villains ever for an MMO franchise.

The dragons don’t have anything to make them interesting and because anet won’t definitively take them out of the “dragons are a force of nature” category they remain a flat dry and boring part of the story (a rather large part at that).

Please anet at least create some cool champions of mordremoth who have a background and a cunning plot deeper than I must consume then go take a nappy nap.

So what do you guys think? Do you find the dragons to be a good villain in gw2? Why or why not? Is it not a big deal that they are boring? To me the villain is a huge amount of the story and I play mmos in a large part for the story.

The example reminds me of the Heart quests that i liked the LEAST in the open world. The ones that don’t actually use your character’s skill set, build or weapons but instead give you a gimmick for a mini-game experience.

In order to actually have a useful leaderboard stuff must be exactly equal across the board though. Otherwise a leaderboard would be completely pointless since certain classes would have advantages and so on.

That doesn’t change the fact that op, myself, and I’m sure many others hate quests where we are given bundles.

Aside from that their goal should be to make the classes more balanced. Sure there will always be a top dog but making the disparity between classes strength not as large will help ensuring the leaderboards aren’t filled with only one class.

Op. I see your concern and thought the same thing when I saw this post. But that is just one example. Hopefully there will be others that don’t require bundles.

Real money donations to Anet

No. Arenanet is a what is known as a business.

Sorry your money in the “order of thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of dollars” will have to go unused. Or maybe you can donate it to an actual charity where it can do some good?

I find your comment somewhat unfair, because despite its’ legitimacy, one could apply it endlessly to the ‘resting place’ of any amount of money, placed there by any person.

For example, a movie ticket at $15 – that money could also have been given to charity, should one have chosen to forgo the viewing experience. Would you view those who chose to see the movie with equal disdain, as you seem to be doing in your post above?

I don’t care what you do with your money. Whether you spend it on lollipops or send it to help a charity. It’s your money whatever.

It’s just your question is dumb. A business that just accepts donations and has a streamlined method to do so? Its highly irregular and weird.

And then you throw in the amount of money for no apparent reason other than to just state the amount. As if someone was going to be like “well donations of less than $999 go to this pay pal account and donations of greater than $999 go to the other pay pal. Oh and if you donate tens of thousands make sure you get the complimentary Arenanet Charity shirt. It has the cutest Quaggan on the back and signed by Colin Johanson!”
