Joshua Grouch Davis,

We like the game and aren’t unthankful, but the pace at which the balance team releases changes is abysmal and their impact on the metagame in PvP and PvE is none.

I really hope it’s because HoT brings new weapons and skills and whatnot and that the balance looks different there, that the team was working hard to make the meta and playing all professions fun in the expansion (with the new game mode that is coming) which was the reason for close to no balance changes over the last year. Otherwise you’re never getting even close to making a competitive game and your e-sports dreams will remain just that – unfullfilled dreams. You’re moving farther away from it with every player lost to months of stale, uninspired and, sorry to say, plain dumb management of the game balance.

PvP can be a great community-building device, but it needs to be nurtured and taken care of. What’s been done during last year is just a spit in the face of your loyal players who’d been there even longer than some of the Devs and who supported the game and promoted it through viva voce. You’d be nowhere without these people. They deserve at least some honesty on what the hell is going on and why it’s taking the team 5 months to change 36 skills. Makes me sad thinking of it.

It’s been too long.

Sincerely,
a gw2 pvp fan since beta

Greater Mobility for Necros

in Necromancer

Posted by: leman.7682

leman.7682

Kinda silly that a very nice QoL change is being made fun of because of how they worded the buff.

You realise the explanation behind the change makes sense only if Anet has metrics that majority of necros wielding warhorn get interrupted while casting this skill without already having some swiftness.

Now consider that and see, how ridiculous that dev note sounds. If the rationale was to improve fluidity of the skill, I’d have no problem with it. Just now it just looks like they’re trying to say ’we’re listening’ without actually doing anything.

Disclaimer: Obviously I’m ignoring the 0.5s faster cast time increasing the swiftness uptime equals mobility improvement argument, because at no point is it even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

January 27th Necromancer balance changes

in Necromancer

Posted by: leman.7682

leman.7682

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/preview-of-upcoming-balance-changes/

Necromancer:

  • Locust Swarm: The casting time of this skill has been reduced from 1 second to 0.5 seconds.
Dev note: This change will give necromancers a bit more mobility.
  • Corrosive Poison Cloud: The casting time of this skill has been reduced from 1 second to 0.5 seconds. The cooldown on this skill has been reduced from 40 seconds to 30 seconds.
Dev note: Because this skill has a subtle effect, we wanted to be able to cast it quickly. We also wanted to allow it to be cast more frequently so necromancers can use it for more consistent (though less damaging) area denial.
  • Signet of the Locust: The cooldown of this skill has been reduced from 60 to 40 seconds. Base healing has been increased by 4%, fixing an issue that caused the Bloodthirst trait to grant 25% bonus healing rather than the 20% intended. The bonus from healing power has been increased by 108% base, 100% when traited with Bloodthirst.
Dev note: We wanted to reduce the penalty for using the active portion of the skill and also improve the reward for having healing power.
  • Signet of Undeath: The passive life-force gain of this skill has been increased from 1% to 2%.
Dev note: While this remains a low amount, we’re looking to provide more options for support when necromancers use this signet.

Related:
Rune of the Nightmare: The duration of fear applied from the sixth piece of this rune has been reduced from 2 seconds to 1 second. Its recharge has been reduced from 90 seconds to 60 seconds.

Discuss.

EDIT:

Locust Swarm: …
Dev note: This change will give necromancers a bit more mobility.

Is this serious? How does this increase our mobility?

I don’t want to be expected to shell out a lump of money for a typical boxed expansion. I’ve contributed enough to the gem store as it is, seeing as the game was sold as B2P with a gem store for sustaining revenue.

Good for you! I hope you got a great experience from buying gems and supporting the studio understanding that being a rational economic agent with disposable income optimizing your utility you could but didn’t have to do that and that there was no promise of free future releases attached to your gem purchases.

GW2 was sold as a B2P game and I holds onto that. GW2:HoT can be whatever it wants, including free and B2P.

Cheers!

It’s not a ridiculous argument for one reason.

I played Guild Wars 1 for six years and never EVER had to upgrade my armor or weapons. That’s what this franchise was built around. Not a gear treadmill. Not upgrading gear constantly.

What’s ridiculous is thinking that because you want to upgrade all your gear, the Guild Wars playerbase is going to take that on the nose. It’s not how the game was laid out before many of us bought it, it’s not expected for the franchise, and even here on the forums today, there are posts about even raising the level cap being a deal breaker.

The reality is that this game was predicated on the idea of horizontal rather than vertical progression.

If Anet tries to add vertical progression, whether you think I’m reasonable or not, there’s going to be a war on these forums.

Even the addition of ascended gear caused an outcry that went far beyond what some would consider reasonable, but it happened for a reason.

It was a tear in the fabric from which the Guild Wars games were woven.

You didn’t Read my post correctly.

First of all, you need some sensibility – me writing that I would like some additional progression doesn’t mean I assume whole community would like that. On the contrary, I am showing you the opposite side of the coin.

Secondly, you saying that there are people who dislike traditional gear treadmill is funny because everybody knows that. It’s also a common knowledge that there are people who like grinding (although I presume they are a miniscule part of gw2 community, if even there) and some moderate people, like me, who enjoy improving their characters’ power levels (those surely exist in the community, I know many).

Then, you move on to saying that an introduction of some additional progression would start a war on the forums. Well, I thought of all people you’d understand that forums represent just a small part of the game’s community and cannot stay in the way of improving the game overall.

Another problem is you thinking inside the box when talking about progression. If there was an expansion providing amazing repeatable gameplay in all game modes making it possible to progress through some additional gear system multiple times or on multiple characters at once it could work and I think less people would be against that.

Finally, you didn’t understand the message I tried to send with my post. I tried to gently say that you made 23 characters, grinded them to max gear and now will block anything that works against your perfect world. Well, let me bring it to you -this is life, the more you have the more you have to pay attention to it. And please, telling that gw2 was built on ‘no vertical progression’ marketing is just not true. It was built on ‘no grind’ principal, which arguably wasn’t preserved anyways.

Not trying to start a flame war, but hypocrisy is strong in this one.

You’re getting fresh, free stuff every 2-4 weeks and complaining you are getting a stagnate game… so yeah, your demands are pretty ridiculous.

What is ridiculous is your attitude. First you assume Living Story is working for the majority and is the ‘way of the future’. Then you deny a fellow player the right to have it the other way with one of the stupidest arguments on these forums (the game’s not for you).
Your problem is, you don’t understand the issue here and are too fixated on defending the Living World concept to see that.

I’m less concerned about it being an expansion and more concerned about what an expansion might bring to the table.

Let’s say that the level cap goes up. That may or may not be a problem for me, depending on how it’s handled. But I have 23 80s, all in max level gear.

If I have to gear them all up again, that’s not going to be fun.

Even if gearing them up again is the case, I can’t see a reason why anyone like you would have to gear 23 characters immediately. I mean, come on, you have to realize yourself how ridiculous this argument is. It’s not like you’ll have to play all of them at once or something.

You are an alt-savy person with a lot of time to put into this game, make 23 characters for some reason and then expect to be done for life? I mean a person who struggles to exp and gear one character may be afraid of future progress if it lands with an expansion, not a person with an army of finished toons.

Also, additional progression would be a blast for me because I only play two characters, max them out and that’s how the story goes.

how can you guys stand it?

leman.7682

There is not a top necro player in EU I know of that hasn’t taken brakes from the game.

There’s a point where you’ve mastered and tried everything and it’s literally impossible to enjoy the game anymore. That’s on top of realising that you’re subpar to other professions in most situations imaginable.

In PvP after thousands of necro games, I find myself rotating mechanically, I don’t think much, I just go where I know I should. I duel and teamfight using tried and working rotations, I know where to expect most things, I keep track on everything happening, mechanically.

In PvE, I do the Living World releases despising the dagger autoattack spam I’ve been forced to commit to for the past 2 years, but I keep doing it, mechanically, without fun, without challenge. I hate the fact that I’m slow and can’t run as fast to objectives as other professions.

Coming back to what I’ve been saying since launch (yes, literally since launch and I have posts to prove that), necro is designed to be tedious. This tedious design hasn’t been changed since the release, not to mention expanding the gameplay.

So how can I stand it? By just not giving a kitten about the game anymore. Taking it as some clicking contest with no reward is a good approximation of how I’ve been feeling about it for some time. Does ArenaNet have people that could fix that? I believe they do (Jonathan Sharp, who was influential in making necro what it is, left Anet), but looking at their track record I have doubts it can happen.

If ArenaNet truly are what they say, I am sure necro will be revisited one day. Until then, enjoy the boredom.

Nothing new. I advice you to stay away from this game for now but come back on the 13th of January to see if PvE gets anything interesting with the Season 2 finale. I’m playing Diablo 3 at the moment and it’s greatly refreshing – compared to GW2 it is actually fun.

Cheers!

Yeah don’t worry, once you’ll learn you need a full set with good stats roll in D3 for T6 you’ll lose some interest. If not, you’ll grind to it for hours on end, only to reach the build where T6 becomes such a faceroll you’ll play it while watching movies. Then, you notice a pattern – you’re literally grinding for 0.1% stats increases. Coming from D3 after 1.5k hours with all classes/all genders (yes, that’s 12 chars) at max level to this game trust me, D3 offers a fraction of content this game does. You’ll be bored out of your mind soon enough.

EDIT: Before you mention greater rifts – they’re based primarily and mostly on LUCK (RNG), then heavily on gear (and gear translates literally into the number of hours you’ve played).

Well, I won’t argue D3 is all exp, gear, faceroll, quit. At the same time, for me at least, it is much more fun to come back to, do some Rifts with friends for a week or two and then leave. D3 has been improved much more since its launch than GW2, much more.

Rock on with your vamp signet bro. Don’t listen to the haters

Ohh man, I was talking more in general. My post about the vamp signet build wasn’t completely serious. I mean – the only possible way to figure out whether certain utilities/builds work in Courtyard is to test them numerous times against skilled, organised opponents, which I haven’t faced much during my 60 matches so far. But I am an above average player and the friends I play with are above average themselves so it is just hard to measure. It surely was fun trying to coordinate spikes.

Moving onto the main topic, the discussion about necro at this point in my opinion is a complete waste of time for two reasons.
Firstly, ArenaNet has shown over two years (I’ve been on these forums since they launched before BWE1) that they do not care much about the game’s balance. There is no feedback from the Devs, we never get any rationale for certain changes that happen (DS weapon swapping) and some things are straight neglected for months (downed state hp, Blood Magic traits). I could go on. The bottom line is – everything feels extremely one-sided.
Secondly, the community is pretty much dead from a discussion standpoint. No one is testing anything new, just because there haven’t been many significant changes for months and months. Just as an example axe is still bad in any possible game mode, off-hand dagger and staff still feel necassary in PvP. Things are stale and there is nothing exciting to talk about.

This track record tells me, that either ArenaNet are making new skills, weapons and traits or maybe even new progression systems, where things are going to look better or that they just simply settled with the system they have and don’t need more at this point. In either case, they do not deserve my input and my time and I encourage everyone who values their time to think about it. I’m pretty sure they can come up to a similar conclusion.

Cheers.

Mmm, a variance of the standard. I like variance.

My biggest gripes:

  • Untraited warhorn – mehhy meh
  • Vital Persistence – what for? Path of Midnight, better. Hell, with your utility choice even Spectral Mastery works better.
  • Well of Power really feels underwhelming for reasons provided by Moakkington.
  • GL surviving long fights without Sigils of Energy . Bursting feels waaay out of place., especially in staff. Could accept in a Dhuumfire+Terror build… maybe.
  • Nightmare runes Kappa. I prefere Traveler’s and without them I feel like a Flesh Wurm.

In other words, it is a deviation of the standard build with some changes across the board, but these changes don’t make it feel ‘fuller’ and I’d argue they even make it feel less complete. I also see application issues vs decent opponents.

No waypoints is glorious!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I stand by my initial thought – if the map design is good (like in the case of Silverwastes), then only the least skilled players will be angry about the lack of Waypoints, because they die most often and cannot adapt.

The rest will get used to it. It takes me approximately two minutes to run from one end to the other on necro, which lacks any burst mobility. People who complain about the map design in this case seem to be just the typical forum malcontents.

Not only does the design help to make the game more immersive (I’m not the immersion guy, but that’s how it is), it also makes people play better and care about dying. It makes them cooperate more to succeed. It roots out the negative event waypointing that strips the game of it’s gameplay of fully participating in events while being there on site, instead pushing people into ‘wp, dps, collect reward’ playstyle.

If we ever get bigger maps in PvE, I’d like them to be as well designed as Silverwastes, which as I’ve read on the forums are a tremendous success for ArenaNet. One could think at the time Dry Top was released, that it was the new refreshing type of map design and it was… at that time. After seeing Silverwastes, the expectations are going to be much higher.

If ArenaNet wants the players to care about open-world, they should continue on the way they embarked on with Silverwastes. And naysayers need to either learn to play better or find some real arguments supporting their cause.

on mounts
I can agree that well implemented mounts could work. They could be made into another cosmetic horizontal progression system (like minis, finishers, etc.) and balance the mobility in PvE across classes. The mounts I’m thinking about are land only providing the same mobility as a normal running player (with jumps, maybe dodge, included) with additional significant speed buff.
