The new legendary seems to confirm that we will get torch with the elite spec, with its necromancy vibe. But does anyone else thing it looks like kitten? Or will you guys make it

I got the vibe and thus said imply because of the surrounding candles, especially present in the precursor. Maybe in the new elite spec we set down 5 candles around a target to apply 1 burn stack or smthn ????

This is one of the most ridiculous lines of though that I’ve read on this forum since the day it was launched. Congratulations.

Meh, these are worthless and should be removed to avoid pointless clutter.

My redesign is simple.

What is the theme of Necromancer? Weaken enemys.

What should a Necromancer bring the group? Boon remove and weaken enemys with vulnerability so the full dps classes deal more dmg. Necros got a high surviavability so the dont need the highest dps. But increase others dps with 25 stacks vulnerability fits to their playstyle and makes them a must have if the other classes get less access to vulnerability.

Necromancers 25 stacks vulnerability like ps are needed for 25 stacks might. Simple change high impact.

You realise that virtually every profession can stack vulnerability, and necro is far from being the best at that? Your idea makes no sense.

So, I can’t be dismissive but someone who’s had the luxury of playing (what you assume to be) longer than me can? I don’t care how long someone’s played, it still doesn’t make their opinion fact. Also, he stated nothing in regards to WvW he clearly stated he was talking about PvE (not the OP, talking about Rym). Unless you can tell me exactly what my knowledge on the Necro is, don’t assume it’s lower than someone else’s. That’s both arrogant and flat out elitist. Dismissing someone who’s being dismissive, yeah your reply was ‘useless’ as Rym would put it.

Utter rubbish. You’re missing the point which is that necro GS is a weapon that does poor damage and isn’t on par with condition builds, which by the way are already quite low on damage compared to that of other dps-oriented professions. Opinions like yours are the reason why it’s been so difficult to balance necro in the past – you simply lack the perspective to comprehend the intricacies of this game and you aren’t even close to realising that.

Official Skill Balance Thread: 22 February Update

Hey,

Some questions focused on Necromancer.

1) How do you feel about the necro GS after the buffs, where do you see it being used?
2) Is focus in a good spot right now? What about dagger?
3) Some Spectral skills received some attention in this patch; do you think they’re competitive now with skills like Wells or Corruption skills?

I have to agree with the PvP sentiment that others expressed – tested the GS/Shroud on golems and it feels like there are some okay skills in there (GS3 and GS4 stand out, minus the wonky animation on #3), but honestly most of it is still too situational to make it worth taking.
Not to mention that you can’t really skip staff or warhorn so that’s not enough. Other than that there’s really nothing much.

I will be testing the new dps with my friends, but there are some interesting venues worth exploring with trait/rotations for raids. Possibly even something new for PvP, but that’s yet to be determined.

It would be interesting to see what the dev behind these changes thinks of GS’s usability and position in PvP and PvE right now.

Necro nerfs incoming

in Necromancer

leman.7682

The last buff we get was the scepter AA buff.

Did you miss the power buffs?

GS aftercast
GS skill 3 60% dmg increase
Axe 3 corrupts 2 boons
Axe 1 dmg increase
Axe 2 increased dmg., lowered casting time
Dagger 3 corrupts 2 boons
Dagger 2 lowered casting time
Focus 4 lowered cooldown
Focus 5 lowered cooldown, increased dmg.

Condi Reaper suvivablity in sPvP is low due to existing amulets. Trailblazer and Dire Reapers in WvW are broken/OP. Power Reaper is fine in PvP/WvW (Marauder, Demolisher, Paladin – all viable). In PvE its damage is too low.

The GS and Axe buffs helped the weapons become obligatory in PvE and PvP, respectively. GS is the top power dps in raids, as low and non-viable as it is. Axe has become the main power weapon in PvP and is viable to the extent to which necro is viable (boundary conditions defined as having or not having a support player).

The two problems are:
1) No viable power build exists in PvE. That’s a major kitten-up, as damage is currently all that necro offers in PvE, and the only team support option we have – Vampric Presence – is not even close to making up for the huge damage loss with respect to other professions.
2) Dagger and focus being power weapons have no meaningful identity whatsoever. In no game mode, nor type of content, are these two viable. Bringing their usefulness up to provide either more reliable, meaningful sustain in PvP (dagger) or damage in PvE (focus), along with some good traits increasing necro’s support capabilities, would go a long way towards making the profession more viable.

i hope power necro gets 50k dps already

Acknowledging this user’s agenda…

Power necro needs a qualitative buff, because the condi build, as fun as it is in PvP, is boring, bad and situational in PvE, and I need that raw dps for the adrenal rush, Anet mate. I don’t want to continue spamming scepter autos in some symmetrical, Mozartean rythm. I need Beethoven or Nightwish gameplay to blow me away! No more minuets; it’s scherzo time. Or at least make it into the heroic Wagner since necro is supposed to be an attrition class…

I started making Astralaria, so give me a reason not to stop. Maybe start with the auto rework so it’s not useless and doesn’t look like Nadal vs Federer (or badminton for girl characters).
No hope though; the changes will probably look like they were influenced by a bacchian touch.

Btw, focus still sucks after over 4 years. I have a free pro-tip: if no one uses it even with the few changes in the past, that means a complete rework is in order.

I don’t know about you guys, but my queues are all below 1 minute, but I moved on to a certain shooter, so that may be the reason.

Anyways, the sole idea of being ‘stuck’ in the bleakest, most daunting, disheartening and dreadful map ArenaNet ever designed, a shameful title that has fallen upon Heart of the Mists to hold, for so long is a terrible testament to how horrible GW2’s PvP currently is.

Anyone who tried playing it in the past weeks knows well the overwhelming sense of impending doom that permeates PvP today. It’s basically as bad as it was during off-season unranked times, but worse, with less people willing to play, tired of the never-changing, stagnant environment of the broken e-sports dreams.

I guess what I’m trying to say, Grim, is that this money, no matter how big or small we consider the budget to be (I think it amounts to quite a lot for a company like Anet, especially taking all the alternatives into account), there is no way to objectively consider this spending ‘good’. Sure, it managed to keep some current players ‘engaged’, but the drop from season 1 to season 2 was noticable (and that’s a kind understatement). Now a lot of top players have lost their interest, some others moved before that. I mean, just watch weekly stream chats, it’s obvious the majority of people aren’t there for the gameplay, and that’s surely not what a healthily engaged community looks like.

And nothing can convince me that spending money in this way is acceptable. At least it wouldn’t be at my company (Fortune20).

Cheers.

Some conversations are substantive. In others, some times one side decides to unilaterally pull out of the convention of using arguments as the main tool of the conversation and starts picking on technicalities and attacking other people instead of their positions. That’s what you just did, while conviniently skipping my whole message.

Furious with how Anet advertises? Not even slightly. Just midly amused with how short-sighted or straight-up uninforemed some people are. If you’re not willing to defend your point of view, then why do you even bother writing here? And my post isn’t aggressive, it just happens to tear your point of view to shreds by showing you that what you wrote doesn’t provide any substance to the matter, it literally doesn’t support anything. We are trying to debate whether PL is worth it as a marketing tool and all you do is divert the discussion into a worthless note that other companies spend more. I’m telling you how I never read anything about ProLeague, how GW2 is never mentioned in terms of e-sports (or competitive PvP for that matter), and you’re talking about Coca Cola. You provide no substance, and all I do is ridicule that.

This thread has reinvigorated my interest in marketing, I’m going to dust off my Kotler and read some HBR to see where the marketing theory showcased in this thread comes from.

Grimkram missing the point by thinking in absolute values. At first, I wanted to respond and explain to you how things work in this world (I’m a financial analyst), but I can’t bother anymore. Some people just lack perspective too much. Still, the most basic purpose of marketing is to increase the engagement with your product by people. And by this most basic measure, PL has failed completely. Don’t try to defend it if you lack in understanding. And the argument that Anet needs 200k to keep people playing their game is just proving my point and disproving yours. You could hire two decent programmers for this money and make them work a year on improving the game.

If anything, the only logically-sound and convincing argument is by someone who said that thanks to ProLeague Anet can use ‘e-sports’, ‘rewards’ and all that in their ads. In itself, it is highly improbable that PL is a profitable endeavour.

Oh and before someone pulls another ‘Coca Cola vs Anet’, or ‘10 men that spend more’ argument – comparing the marketing budget of a top FMCG company in the world to the one of a medium-size video game studio

But keep thinking what makes you happy, guys. That’s what you have left anyways.

Haha ha, ha ha, aha. This thread is hilarious.

There are still people who think that 2,000 viewers is much.
There are still people who think ProLeague is good marketing.
There are people who will use any opportunity to bash the game’s terrible matchmaking (I shiver with joy uncontrollably when someone mentions the ‘50/50’ argument).
There are people who will bash Overwatch for being a clone of TF2 completely disregarding its merits. 2016 newsflash – this argument doesn’t work on people with intelligence over 50, which I would hope is the majority of GW2 community (as much as some posters try to prove me wrong). Another note: no one cares what the game is if it’s fun and playable.
I’m pretty amazed with the marketing-for-living guy who said PL is cheap marketing. You are assuming that info about PL reaches potential clients – it doesn’t. It only reaches a handful of dedicated players who like to torture themselves with the weekly streams of well-known quality (or lack thereof). GW2 PvP is complete niche and the money isn’t marketing because it does not create any additional demand.

How do I know? No one knows about GW2 PvP outside of GW2. No one talks about it, and so, by extension, no one cares about its $200,000 reward pool, especially when contrasted with the top e-sport titles, their immense popularity and huge budgets. I mean, when was the last time you stumbled upon any info related to GW2 PvP? I don’t know if I ever did. I’m sure there are news about it, but they don’t reach the gaming ‘mainstream’.

Can’t wait to see sponsor reaction to the news that they’re paying money to be watched by up to 2,000 of mostly harcore player demographic (who tend to have all the gaming gear they need), because the game’s PvP isn’t friendly to the masses. Cheap/good marketing my kitten .

But hey, let’s be positive! Solide Werbung, meine Damen und Herren! Worth every penny.
A joyful evening with the GW2 PvP forum.

Did anyone lose respect for Argi?

in PvP

leman.7682

I’m dropping my diplomatic attitude for a while. Let me tell you that from a perspective of someone who interacts with real-life professionals, nothing, nothing in GW2 is professional. ESL are like kids in a playground – no direction, horrible organisation, abhorrent conduct, thoughtlessly designed ProLeague rules, no balls for taking quick and real action, no proper communication, and absolutely disgusting music on breaks during ProLeague.
Anet? Same – no direction for the game, no balance, no communication, no substantial action taken to fix the state of affairs.
Players? Money-hungry kids using dirty tricks to have their shot at earning their first money in life. Hiding behind stupid rules and terrible design.

Since most people seem not to realise that – people in real life get fired for such behaviour, because the moment things go wrong and customers start complaining, the real professionals at the top start cleaning the mess up. That’s what GW2 is – a total mess, and there are no professionals to clean it up.
I never thought I’d say that but the only ones who deserve recognition are the duo of EU shoutcasters (I don’t watch NA, so no opinion there) who work in this rough environment and somehow manage to keep their kitten together.

I took a 5-month-something break from active playing and I wanted to come back for good for S3. I log in, no one’s online, see people logging in every few days just to chat and bash the game. That’s a major waste of time. As Henry put it – shambles.

Most of the intelligent human beings already quit because there’s just so much rubbish you can take before you notice that it’s going nowhere and the remains of faith for Anet that still linger are not enough to counterbalance the top releases at the end of May. We can always come back since the game will surely live on and there’s no barriers, but one has got to be delusional to think that new games designed bottom-up for PvP releasing in the coming years won’t challenge GW2 to the point of being obsolete. No fun left.

Ohh, and I saw a guy with Chaos Gloves and a sloth on his back spamming quaggans wearing aviator caps and flying attached to balloons. What is this kitten art direction? Your game used to look like a painting, and then you decided to add wings.

Ohh-encore, and writing here is also a waste of time because let’s face it, no one with real power reads it, making it just an echo chamber, and a fight club.

It’s so funny to read it now, because at the time one could think things couldn’t worsen, and yet… looks like the balance went in a completely opposite direction.

Why am I writing this? To emphasize that everything has already been said many times and years ago. Arriving at a conclusion I leave to the reader.

Ravenmoon, what is this? Are you really accusing a generation of young people currently entering their adult life of their lack of professionalism? It makes no sense whatsoever.

It’s not Millennials, it’s GW2 players and its competitive PvP community that have been acting unprofessionally. It’s just that, not some generational problem (although I would agree that it has come for Millennials to live and grow up in tough times, and they have their issues).

I won’t juggle names but the fact is that there have been just a few completely professional GW2 players. I am not trying to hurt anyone, but that’s how it is, and it’s coming from someone who has been around long enough to see that. Whoever played this PvP in high MMR and got to know this community, knows that it has never been ‘pretty’. Is it worse than in other games? It’s hard to say, but alting, using DDoS attacks, throwing accusations and variour other forms of nastiness have been around ever since real money came into play.

As one poster put it in some other thread – most of those competing are adolescents (not always physically, but very often emotionally) for whom this amount of money justifies the means. No matter how you look at it, we don’t have professional players of the caliber of Kripparrian, or Trump, or some League or Dota pros.

Maybe it would be easier to maintain a community that isn’t memorable only for all the dirt if the game were more successful, so that players could gain some income from streaming. As it is now, I presume some of them were banking large portions of their lives on their performance in GW2. With stakes so high and no immediate alternative in form of other games or streaming revenue, it’s not surprising the scene has been witnessing situations that are considered unacceptable in the ‘real world’ and would lead to total alienation at a workplace, or in a relationship.

Saddening, really, and it can even impact some people who try to distance themselves; after all, if you want to be a part of this community, you have to play by its rules. Sometimes, I would personally fall for it and act like a total kittenbag and then spread that onto other players who didn’t deserve it. That magical word ‘drama’ comes to mind. Shameful, when I think about it. Felt really bad, man.

Bottom line is, that’s hell of a weird community. It’s not necessarily different from other big ‘e-sport’ communities (>implying that this is an e-sport), but it’s also much smaller and hence everything bad is much more pronounced.

First of all, let me agree with Leeto on his points. +1 The second post especially is of particular beauty and touches my soul.

Now, hasn’t this game’s PvP gone in a hilariously wrong direction? I mean, come on, this couldn’t have developed into anything else given Anet’s track record of messing up. This is not simply a problem of someone cheating, of a DDoS or alting so to speak, but is rooted deeply in how bad the game was being handled for years now.

In the first season, we had bunker wars which killed interest for many, but what happened in this season so far is particularly hysterical. We had postponed matches in week 1 because servers wouldn’t work. We had a DDoS that cost one of the front-running teams their chance for qualifying to the LAN event. We saw players abandoning their teams and joining their opponents for better chances of winning money. We had forbidden subbing and a disqualification that let yet another team go. And then there are teams like Super Smash, Guns N Roses and Purple Noise that, with all due respect, get destroyed 500-0 by the two or three top teams and thus are considered free wins.

That’s Guild Wars 2 Pro League (and competitive PvP in general, for that matter). It has become a joke. The few people who watch weekly streams don’t do that for the atrociously boring games but to make fun of ArenaNet and the game in Twitch chat… You thought a chat spamming ResidentSleepers during 0-0 matches in season 1 was hilarious? You should check out people talking about >name_redacted< (a certain shooter) in the chat nowadays. To put it bluntly, barely anyone cares about GW2 PvP and the few people that do, do it only to laugh at how bad it is.

It must suck to be Mike O’Brien now. As the head of ArenaNet and the Game Director, he will ultimately have to make the decision about the future of GW2 competitive PvP. From the outside, it looks like anything short of completely burying it makes little sense from the business perspective, because paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to be a laughing stock is a poor deal by anyone’s standards.

Who’s at fault? Mostly the balance devs because the majority of issues discussed here and elsewhere, now and before, stem from poor skill balancing. It was that balancing that pushed many players out of the game, many viewers away from watching streams, and prevented the few existing teams from being fully competitive.

Let me emphasise with the utmost sincerity that this post is not aimed at attacking anyone, be it devs or players, but rather to add to the discussion about the direction in which this game’s PvP has been led.

Hi, everyone.

I used to play GW2 and write quite a lot here on the forums until I took a break from GW2 at the end of 2015. During that time, I was following PvP streams quite a lot but mostly out of habit and for the people, rather than strictly for the game for which, at the time, I completely lost interest.
Fast forward few months and I’m thinking about coming back. I have no idea what PvP and necro looked like last season and would appreciate people sharing their experiences.

In particular, I’m interested to find out:

  1. What necro build was dominant last season?
  2. How did it fare in different matchup (against mesmers, eles, druids, and so on)?
  3. With recent changes to mesmers and the upcoming removal of Mercenary amulet how do you see necro’s viability? What builds do you expect to be played?
  4. Can we talk about any, even slight, build diversity or is there still most likely going to be just one competitive build?

Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Sincere apologies if a topic like this was already posted lately – I haven’t had time to read through the forums just yet.

Your MMR is still volatile since you haven’t played many matches. The more you play, the better matchmaking will become for you. Also remember that ranked and unranked have separate MMRs so if you decide to jump into Ranked when you hit 20, you will have a similar experience until you adjust for that new pool of players.

Hey, I encountered couple of full premade/4-man queues vs solos/duos lately. Possible reason for such change? It wasn’t like that a few weeks ago and right now if you solo queue it is extremely disheartening.

One serious complain is that vanilla classes look very bland in comparison to the revenant and I’m afraid Anet will have to start reworking the base classes in order to put the original specializations, weapons and skills in line with what revenants provide.

I haven’t tried the Reaper yet, but I played against reapers during the beta and I think they are in a good, balanced spot.

Playing against them in 1v1’s was challenging, especially as a ranger, but they were more manageable in team fights. I talked to a friend who plays necro very well and tested the reaper a lot and she said it gains some and loses some with respect to the vanilla class, which is exactly how it should be (ceteris paribus).

During the beta, celestial eles, revenants and chronomancers were much more threatening and more impactful on the outcomes of games I played and that’s where I think the concern should be placed.

Reaper is fine, people just have to adjust their attitudes towards necros and stop thinking of them in terms of free kills.

Arrogant? I’m just being realistic.
Some facts from the EU high-end sPvP/MMR (mostly soloQ):

  • standardisation – it is definitely a thing. Some of the rune sets/sigils are unavailable in PvP. Buffs/food definitely throw the metagame more into imbalance.
  • areas in PvP are smaller and force a requirement of better positioning/LoS and basically a faster gameplay (beautifuly shown by the OP with his slow reaction time).
  • I’d say there are some good WvW players, even some amazing ones (like Sindrener who started in WvW, but transferred to PvP and is seeing a great success; disclaimer: when he first came to PvP, he was slightly above average IIRC).
  • It’s difficult to generalize, but fact is WvW environment does not perpetuate a long-term skill increase directly because of the extremely uneven playing field and relatively low skill-ceiling (the most hardcore/fast/skilled players play PvP) which then skew the perception of WvW players (Dunning–Kruger effect).

Bonus:
My experience on necro a year ago (after Dhuumfire nerfs and before recent buffs, which I consider to be the worst time for necros since the release) was that I was able to kill fully stacked/buffed roamers in T1 matchups on EU without distibuting my points, eating any food and without using my utilities and heal. Obviously, I have never played WvW religously (because of the very reasons I outlined in this post and because it is just too easy for me), but my experience has always been just straight up faceroll against anything and everything). Moreover, my buddy who’s one of the top PvP thieves on EU was dueling a ‘pro’ WvW roamer thief and was able to kill him using only sword or only shortbow. The skill gap is that huge.

I was not attacking anyone, but since you were quite aggressive with your reply, I felt obliged to give a more thorough answer. I’d say backed on my experience that skill-level distribution is just skewed to the left in case of WvW players (attachment) because of the reasons I gave.

I will wait for your reply and some counter arguments backed by experience.

No disrespect, but…

Choose one.

The gameplay is slow, the opponents are average at best and it is all in the WvW environment. Wish there were VODs of the actual good rangers playing PvP like some you see in SoloQ on EU and NA. That would give people some perspective.
I enjoyed the video nonetheless.

Ranger is actually currently one of the highest DPS classes in the game. You might just be using the wrong build.

GW2Guru Lawl. Surprised it still exists.

From the outside it literally looks like there are just a few guys of average intelligence and experience who don’t even play their game. They introduce changes after months of ‘work’ which contrary to their philosophy of careful balancing end up overbuffing the usual suspects (thieves, eles, warriors, recently mesmers), that are then left untouched for months. They have also sorely failed at fixing the ‘bad’ professions (ranger, necro) for 3 years now, despite having the best community and feedback, both of which are much more than they ever deserved, mind you. Sorry, but that’s how it looks like from the outside.

Ohh, forgot to mention that their communication is straight-up garbage. It is so bad that most companies in traditional markets would be pushed out of business if they adopted a similar policy. They fail completely at selling ideas behind changes they make.

Since what they’ve tried so far is obviously not working, maybe it’s time to fund a PTR with constant community-dev interaction on special forums and run test days or something akin to what, you know, all respectable developers do.

OP is the definition of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

This, totally and thus I recommend everyone not engaging in the discussion.

I say the ratio is 5:1 with people loving strong hold being the 5.

Did you pull the number from your hat or your kitten , chap?

Legit question.

Stronghold Feedback [merged]

I dislike it. I haven’t even tried more than one match and it may sound ridiculous to form one’s opinion based on one match, but I can’t get interested in it because of how boring it feels and looks (and I watched many Stronghold matches).

It may become successful, but it’s highly unlikely. Thinking that it took Anet almost 2 years to come up with this game mode is straight up unbelivable.
